Fanfiction: Pokémon: Pinnacle Platinum by WindsweptCity
Summary by the author: I've been playing Pokémon for most of my life, and I have gotten a bit bored of how easy the games were. In a world where Pokémon are real however, I'm only marginally better than a total rookie. But that just means I get to experience the magic again: the highs and lows, the victories and failures, and everything in between on my journey to reach the top.
So, obviously, it is a pokemon fanfic. Protag is a modern SI character who was reborn into the pokemon world as Luna and has started her journey in Sinnoh with her starter Glaceon. She is joined by Lucas, an assistant to Professor Rowan who is researching evolutions and later on by Ursula, a coordinator.
Ash and his gang are having their journey as well, and they met once, but they are doing their own thing. Still, this is mostly the anime world and the anime plot is happening, and Luna only occasionally brushes up against it.
That should be all the relevant information. I honestly do not have much to say about it, other than that it updates weekly on Saturdays, and I am having a great time reading this story. It is a fun exploration of the pokemon world, I quite like the dynamics between pokemon and trainers, I like the characters and Luna in particular is a very good protagonist. Even the anime elements of the setting, story and characters have been incorporated rather well, and with our main trio, we delve into the aspects of poke-battling, research into the nature of pokemon and the coordinator competitions. So there is a lot going on.
So yeah, if anyone is in the mood for a pokemon journey fic that updates regularly, try this. Well-worth the read. Story is on Ao3.

Pokemon Black! Already Worked up!
20th June
Ok it is decided! I got excited about playing these games so I chose Black over Platinum for now. I loved Black when it came out and in my opinion this genration is the best in the series. So much thought was put into it! It really was the pinnacle of the DS era. It is also probably one of Pokemon's toughest era. Fortunately with 150 new pokemon to use plus the old ones in Black and White 2 im not so worried about my losses!
So here goes nothing!
My starter choice is Tepig this game. A strong Fire Fighting type which was my brother favourite in the past. I have never been a fan but a strong and guaranteed fighting type for the famous run killer Lenora will be useful. I name him El Piggo he has a -Speed nature which I am already feeling but Emboar wasn't horrendously fast anyway.
Honestly, I breeze through the opening. Tepig is a great start and blasts through all opponants. I feel bad because there are so many cool touches at the beginning. The little scene with Bianca is literally 7 lines long but is very well written. The battles at the start walking onto route 1 together and Ghestsis' speech are really engaging. With that I battle N. His purrloin ain't much to my level 7 tepig at this point. I actually get my girlfriend to fight him. A rare video gaming occurance.
With that I head to route two and get a Patrat I name Alvin. Honestly He is just fodder again in preparation for Lenora especially with the worse ability but we shall see. Last but not least I head to the dream yeard for Pansage as it really is the only answer to the upcoming Panpour and honestly when else am I going to use one.
This is going to be tiny on mobiles but these are the three. The new format sucks for this unfortunately.
With that I handily beat cheren with Pansage and Tepig before heading into the gym... OK a bit of a power increase. I ahve to grind on patrats and lillipups for bloody ages to get to level 14. The xp just doesnt go up! I'm glad I do though because the battle against Cress does not go as planned.
So yeah, When I said this is when pokemon starts to actually get hard. I wasn't kidding! I send in Tepig against Lillipup because thats what you are meant to do and I start tackling. Unfortunately it can only do chip damage about 25% he is doing 20% with his bite and didnt use work up. So, I'm happy I'm chill. He gets down to about 50% and then pulls off a critical hit bite! Which Flinches me! activates my berry! Which he then steals at the end of the turn and ALSO HEALS!!!! WHAT! I blame Cheren for this! Since when did pickup do that! I am astonished. Whats worse is I have another pokemon in the back with another Oran berry! I sneak in a few more tackles before I am forced to switch into Patrat! Who I did not train. So I spend the time using leer, I eventually go for tackle fearing a work up that could wipe the team. But it doesnt hit the range and procs a potion. Patrat goes down but I bring in Pansage and finish it off with a vine whip. Which fortunately does finish it off. Enough monkey business! Pansage basically can't be beaten now. As water gun deals practically nothing and vine whip is dominating the panpour!
That insane combination can't have been a high chance but I'm fuming. I was mere inches from losing my starter there and would have been furious! I can't believe how lucky I had to get there! Never again!
Gym badges won: 65
Pokemon Used: 140
Pokemon Defeated: 31 (didn't like Patrat much anyway)

Lmao you really encouraging people to seek out a 150 dollar game specifically because Pokémon sucks …
#also once again say it with me… pokemon has sucked for a decade#for one#and for two#Pokémon has always been a shoddily made poorly coded mess#I don’t particularly excuse gen 1 for anything either when the us carts were twice the size of the Japan red and green carts 🤔#GS were four times the size of the red green carts 🤔 and they still had to get Iwata to bail them out#btw people are so confused about what iwata actually did#gen 3 is legitimately pretty goddamn ugly compared to many other gba games.. golden sun and minish cap in particular#gen 4 … rip. diamond pearl sucks platinum is fun and hgss well we know how I feel on that one#gen 5 is probably the closest they ever got to ever making a stellar game#and people fucking despised it when it came out#B2W2 weren’t the worst selling games for no reason#people swear up and down g5 is the pinnacle of the series now but then?#people hated the new mons they hated the linear map they hated the story they hated no old mons in the main campaign etc etc#never mind the fact that B2W2 ‘fixes’ this stuff … not that it needed to be fixed imo#plus if you’re looking for a new game in a different series. you’d be starting with all new mons ANYWAY#xy were garbage oras were garbage etc etc#the only truly interesting Pokémon games are the spin-offs#but at this point I’m sick of people championing explorers because they’re Not that good#the story is fine except for the fact you’re surrounded by the most annoying cast imaginable#I really hate the guild. so much:#anyway mystery dungeon is fine except it’s an isekai#PLA is garbage btw don’t even bring that one up#xd and colosseum are so good but they’re not for everyone.. I don’t give a fuck about stadium#the ranger games were really good too..#anyway back to poorly coded#there’s always been glitches you can perform out the gate in these games and yeah usually not game breaking#except in xy 😇#but it was straight up proven in sunmoon that gamefreak made a new instance of every model of the characters every time they showed up ?#sun and moon? the games that lag a 3ds so bad in battle? I have to laugh

“Pokémon is too easy”
It’s a relatively common complaint that the Pokémon games are just too easy for the majority of gamers. Particularly with some of the newer ones. And while I don’t agree in all cases, the complaint is rampant enough that hey, maybe there’s some worth in it. So here’s some ideas for if you think Pokemans are too easy but you still want to play them.
1. Challenge Runs
Pokémon is a series that people tend to replay over and over, and I think this is partially why people think they’re so easy- they know what’s coming because they’ve played the game a dozen times before. If you’re looking for a challenge where you can still apply that knowledge, however, consider a form of self-imposed challenge- you can combine that familiarity with the innovation required in a restrictive ruleset to great effect.
Of course, the most popular version of this is the Nuzlocke challenge. And to be fair it’s like that for a reason- adding an actual fail-state to the game, heavily limiting the available options, and nullifying many cheese strategies does make the game a lot more engaging. I’d also recommend prohibiting overlevelling in some way, since grinding isn’t fun and neither is breezing through bosses effortlessly.
But, of course, other types of challenges exist. Monotype runs are pretty interesting, tightly constricting your team’s variety and making certain boss fights that you’re weak to much tougher than they’d normally be. It is worth noting, however, that these can vary wildly depending on types- a mono-water run is going to be a lot easier than, say, a mono-ice or ghost, with those being nigh-impossible in most games simply because you can’t get anything of those types early on and the games never have very many of them.
Other common challenge runs include solo runs, where you only use one Pokémon the whole time- these aren’t actually that hard from what I’ve seen, though, since you just end up massively overlevelled. There’s a huge variety of challenge runs available, especially when it comes to Nuzlocke variants, so I’m sure you can find something that suits your fancy for the next playthrough.
2. Competitive
Competitive Pokémon is almost alien to the main series games, but it’s easier to get into than it ever has been, and the depth of the strategy is frankly astonishing. If you’ve played much of the main games, you’ll be aware that Double Battles are substantially more complex than single battles, and it’s for that reason that the games’ main official competitive format, VGC, is exclusively doubles based.
Sword and Shield have made it profoundly easy to get into competitive battling compared to previous generations. The plentiful resources and good Pokemon available from the Raid Dens, as well as QOL features in the postgame and DLCs, make grinding up a team so much easier, and the Battle Tower is actually decent challenge now. Playing on the online ladder rewards you with relevant items and BP even if you barely participate. But more than anything else, the game now allows teams to be uploaded online and rented for use on ladder and in the Tower, meaning one of the biggest barriers to entry is null if you want it to be. Of course, this doesn’t work for IRL tournaments, but half the world isn’t getting those right now anyway, so.
Of course, if you don’t have Sword/Shield (or Switch Online, which tbh valid), then Smogon’s Pokémon Showdown is as good as it has ever been. There isn’t really a better way to practice and play such a wide variety of formats, including the competitive scene from every single generation each with its own still-developing meta and community. If you’re someone who used to play but fell off, that old OU is still available to pick back up again (man bring me back to Gen 7 monotype though). And of course, Random Battles are just a blast. It’s a truly impressive program- and I’m shocked it’s still running after all these years.
3. Romhacks
Apparently, romhackers are well and truly in the belief that Pokémon is too easy- and to be fair, the mean age and Pokémon familiarity of a Romhack’s audience is higher than the main series. With that in mind, a huge number of the romhacks that exist do so with the intent of making a more difficult experience. One of the classic examples of this is Drayano’s romhacks- he’s done a set for HGSS, FRLG, BW, BW2, and Platinum off the top of my head, each of which was for a time the pinnacle of polished difficulty in Pokémon- Renegade Platinum is inarguably still the best Platinum hack around, and arguments could be made for Volt White/Blaze Black and its sequels.
I do intend to talk in more detail about the newer generation of Romhacking, but the tools available at this point to gen III hackers allow for the addition of all the features from modern games- Megas, Z-Moves, Dynamax , etc.- and with that comes a whole set of difficult hacks that dwarf old classics like Fire Red Omega or Yet Another Fire Red Hack. Radical Red is perhaps the most infamous of these- the best way to describe it is as a romhack where every boss fight is supposed to be like a competitive game, and you’re going to have to actually train/breed competitively to cleanly succeed. I’m actually of the opinion that hacks like this and Emerald Kaizo are too tough to the point of being unfun, but I have limited experience with them.
Regardless, between these options and more, there are plenty of ways to make Pokémon not too easy. So don’t fucking complain about it again, kthnx

im gonna say it
gen 4/platinum is overrated.
heartgold and soul silver are good, but still holds nearly ALL the problems johto had. the level/exp curve, the fact all the wild pokemon in kanto are so low leveled, along with other issues i cant remember atm.
platinum is good, yeah, but its still slow. too many hms are needed to the point they were basically eliminated the next generation. still barely any fire types. and honestly black/white had a better story than platinum did. platinum had good music and sprites, yeah, but like… it rly isnt the pinnacle of pokemon.
hot take: gen 5 is objectively better and if it started with access to past gen pokemon instead of a soft reset in terms of the dex, people ABSOLUTELY would like it better than gen 4. the only reason gen 5 got its bad rap was bc of no past gen pokemon in black/white till the post game.
#mod talks#pokemon#gen 5 is loved now but literally if it had the previous gen pokemon to begin with#it would totally be more loved than gen 4.

if you still haven’t checked out JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure(ongoing since 1987, by Hirohiko Araki, with an anime adaptation by David Productions), here’s the very basic pitch:
1.) it’s actually eight different parts(five have been animated as of early 2020), each one being a pretty much self contained story about a different guy named jojo going on a different bizarre adventure. If one part doesn’t catch your interest, feel free to skip to another one. There’s a slice of life part, a gothic vampire hunting part, an italian mafia drug war, a road trip with some bros, and an indiana jones-ish globetrotting adventure. It’s probably /better/ if you start at the beginning and go through in chronological order, but a lot of folks jumped on at part 3, which is where “Stands“ show up and things get really bananas
2.) it’s all about baddie-of-the-week action. if you’re not a fan of violence, jjba is not the show for you. That said, it’s not mindless punching and yelling. It’s almost closer to a game manga like hikaru no go or no game no life. There’s layers of mind games and feints and weird indirect strategies. Many of the battles are more like puzzles, with the whole conflict being an effort to figure out just what the enemy is up to, let alone how to stop it.
2.) the absolutely incomprehensible stuff that gets memed is usually related to Stands. They’re basically like Pokemon, but instead of wild animals that you befriend, they’re unique manifestations of a person’s soul with unique powers that reflect their inner nature. They range from fairly simple, to extremely niche and bizarre.
For example:
Jotaro Kujo and his Stand Star Platinum. Star Platinum is basically just a ghost that can punch things real hard, the simplest stand there is.
There’s standard-ish superpower ones like magnetism, stopping time, healing people, or being really good at fencing, and then there’s weird ones like Bruno Bucciarati’s Stand, Sticky Fingers. it can create zippers on stuff. This is actually way cooler and more useful than it sounds.
4.) The other draw is the weird unique vibe. I think the best way to put it is that Araki is just a huge fan of men, like, as a concept. Not necessarily in a gay way, but this story goes out of its way to feature all sorts of different men, with all sorts of different concepts of masculinity, just being themselves and living their lives. it is, on occasion, honest and even nuanced with the ways the men related to their gender. With the above Stand powers being based on each characters internal psyche, we actually get both literal explorations of their psychology(i,e’ backstory, philosophical rants, etc), as well as metaphorical ones. Like, what does it mean that the truest expression of a guy’s soul is “he can put zippers on stuff”? Well, as it turns out, it means Bruno is quick to make friends and connections, but also easily able to break them off and separate if need be. It means he can easily connect two people or things together but can also just zip his way right through whatever is in his way. He’s clean and efficient, if a little simple, and he literally and metaphorically holds his team together. I am literally willing to bet five actual dollars that if you are into dudes, and you get into JJBA, you will get a crush on at least one of them. There’s something for everybody.
5.) however, fair warning, the flip side of the focus on men is that the women characters are not remotely as well written. They are at the very best, underdeveloped placeholders. I would say that at least none of them are particularly offensive stereotypes, but I think that’s mostly because they don’t usually have enough character traits to qualify as any particular stereotype. The,“silver lining” to this is that the story regularly goes for long stretches where it entirely forgets women exist, so at least you don’t have suffer through these feeble attempts /too often/, but as far as silver linings go, that may be the feeblest one I have /ever/ seen. There is, however, no skeevy fanservice or “anime girl” weirdness. I think it’s best described as totally uninterested in women, for good or ill.
SUMMARY.) If you're looking for a ridiculous shonen battle of the week series that’s all about all sorts of manly men, you HAVE to check it out. It is, within that genre, hands down the pinnacle of the form. If you can overlook or suffer through it’s total disregard for women, I wholeheartedly recommend it, but that’s obviously a HUGE if.
ONLY MANLIEST OF MEN/10

On god, i was getting major league depressed again like summer of last year and I cleaned up around my room on a whim and found my old DS Lite with Pokemon Platinum in it and like it didn't save my life or anything but by the nine, it really helped. I had something to actually do, and then I bought Heartgold, my first and favorite pkm game, which had been Action Replayed previously by the former owner. Literally a gift from the divines, cause I have 30 master balls (mostly in case I get like. Shinies or smth) and a bunch of other items. Even if it wasn't AR'ed and full of cheated items, Pokerus Pokemon, and Legends I didn't have yet, HG would still have been worth it because it's the pinnacle of perfection tbh. I am a fierce Heartgold Stan (Soulsilver's good too, but Ho-Oh says Gay Pride(I actually named a Ho-Oh Gay Pride cause its the Rainbow Pokemkn and prepubescent me thought it was funny and adult me thinks its just a Big Mood tbh))
Replaying through Pokemon games cleared my skin and watered my crops, especially when it came to filling the dex. I'm a few nosehairs away from a fully completed dex (minus some legends/mythicals, obv) and its been my dream since 2011 to finish the dex so I'm gonna like. Cry when I do it lol. In addition, I've realized that my love of Pokemon is enormous and I'm going to start doing competitive battling when Gen 8 hits. I already have some Pokemon ready to train for it.
I'm also deadass 100% gonna get a Ho-Oh tattoo someday, already got the design worked out. I will forever Stan Pokemon and I'm sorry I fell out with you for ~4 years, it won't happen again.
No offence but Pokemon has been nothing but a positive force in my life and I will love Pokemon forever
#like Gods i love pokemon#one of my fave things is going through all my pokemon and seeing their names#cause i can still remember almost crystal clear who was in my party when i beat Red im hg for the first time#the star of that show was a severely underleveled donphan named mrs jumbo who i caught and raised specifically to kill the pikachu#and like gods Im gonestly crying about how much i love mrs jumbo she was only l63 going up against a l80 pikachu w iron tail and she won#not to mention like all my starters or iconic pokemon like a level 75 ampharos named L33T SP33K but she was such a god amphy#and dont even get me started on my black/white dream team cause thats the first time i fought friends so i had a whole fireteam ready#bobo the emboar fox mccloud the zoroark rexy (aka sexy rexy) the tyranitar beans the garchomp valkrin the salamence and last but not least#axel the haxorus who i specifically ev trained to absolutely destroy my friends palikia. like he had. insane atk and speed and knew outrage#so i won like every match versus that friend after i installed haxorus into my party#hinestly pokemon arent real but i refer to them as my friends becaus on god weve been through some serious shit together#they'll forever be in my heart <3#jobean rambles

My personal ranking of Pokemon regions, because why not. Subject to change as time goes on, surely, but as of right now, here’s how I feel about the seven main series regions.
1. Sinnoh, to the surprise of no one. You’re probably saying this is solely based on nostalgic bias, and that is a huge part of it, I’ll admit that. Pokémon Diamond was what brought me back into Pokémon, and it and Platinum were the first times I started to really consume all the data I could about the games, which set the trend going forward. Sinnoh’s the reason I’m playing Pokémon today, so it will always have a very special place in my heart. Of course, there is more to love about Sinnoh: personally I very much like the general design aesthetic of Gen IV Pokémon, I adore that the region is steeped in legend and myth, Cynthia, and how could you not enjoy the Underground? I know Sinnoh has faults, but it’s very special to me, and I dearly hope the eventual remake is on a system I own.
2. Alola. Probably not surprising either. It’s a beautiful and extremely unique region, and it introduces many new twists on the Pokémon formula without rendering it unrecognizable. Many things I liked about other games/generations/regions were present in Alola, and while they weren’t all handled perfectly, I do think they were handled well, and it helps give them region a more “complete” feel. The plot and mythology are both engaging, though I do wish they’d intertwined a bit more. The Pokédex features favorites from every generation, and as for the new Pokémon…well, I’m a bit 50/50 when it comes to Gen VII’s design aesthetic, but that doesn’t weigh it down too much. And Alola forms are inspired (even if I can’t seem to get behind any that end up Dark-type). There are a few miscellaneous things from ORAS that I wish had stuck around, but Sun and Moon are improvements over X and Y in every conceivable way, and that helps me just really love this region.
3. Johto. Kind of bumpy getting here, but…nostalgia played a big part again. Gold version was the first Pokémon game that was really mine and I didn’t have to share, so it’s the focal point of nostalgia as far as I’m concerned. Yeah, some of my memories of Gold are hazy, I don’t feel like I excelled when I played HeartGold, and now I’m just baffled by some of the Pokémon distribution choices, but the feel of the region is something that just works. Difficult to explain, but this is all subjectivity anyway. And there’s something interesting about this graphical style, something notably old but still in vibrant color, that helps it retain this feeling of being a refreshing update to Gen I. There are some great Pokémon here too, though it can be difficult to find some of them—Typhlosion will always be a favorite, and darn it, I love Unown, I know they’re utterly useless in a battle but I’m too fascinated by their concept to feel anything but love towards these letters with eyes.
4. Hoenn. Before ORAS, if you heard me mentioning Hoenn, it was only to disparage it. I lost interest in Pokémon during Gen III, a large part of which I still blame on not being able to send Pokémon from Gen II up to the new Generation, and even now a large number of the Pokémon designs introduced here just feel a bit odd to me. Again, this hatred was all before ORAS. ORAS, when they came out, were the utmost pinnacle of Pokémon games on a mechanical level, and are still pretty darn close. They took a great deal of the good things in X and Y and really drove them home, capitalized on everything people already liked about the region (except for trumpets), and introduced plenty of new things that all worked very well. I utterly adore soaring, I can’t speak too highly about that feature. Hoenn’s personality also shone really well in those games, and it’s helped me find a much greater respect for the region. Though, since nearly all I like about it is strictly from ORAS, Hoenn itself falls smack dab in the middle.
5. Unova. Really, I’ve always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Unova, largely stemming from the fact that during Gen V I was unfortunately going through a bit of a genwunner phase. (Thank God that’s over.) Make no mistake, I still stand by some of my criticism: Black and White try far too hard to distance themselves from the other games, worst of all by expressly forbidding us from catching any Pokémon from the first four Generations until we beat their main story, and that issue is exacerbated tremendously by the general design aesthetic of Gen V Pokémon, which I find to be, well…pretty terrible. (With notable exceptions—Chandelure, Gigalith, and Zekrom are some of my all-time favorites.) But there’s also a lot that Gen V does right. It was an enormous step forward in story and characterization—the Gym Leaders never felt more like an actual ensemble of people, to say nothing of Team Plasma, and it’s always impressed me that the plot actually interrupts your initial League challenge. There’s also a wealth of post-game areas to explore, and we’ve still only covered Black and White. Black 2 and White 2 (as opposed to the expected Pokémon Gray) were a unique choice in and of themselves, and retained the best of their predecessors while strengthening the mechanics, adding loads more content, and no longer restricting you to Unovan-original Pokémon, thank God. (Though now that I think about it, I did only use Gen V mons when I played B2 and W2…huh…) Taking a fairer look at Unova, it really is a wonderful place, and as that teenage inclination towards arbitrary bad decisions abates it might actually move up this list. Still…Gen V Pokémon designs…I haven’t gotten over most of you.
6. Kanto. Kanto is just, well…basic. And I mean, it’s the first Gen, it kind of has to be since it’s the template. But still, I just kind of…I don’t know, I guess I’ve used up all the nostalgia I had for it and feel like there isn’t really much else going for it? I’ve trekked through this region probably more than any other, but I don’t know that I really have anything in particular to say about it. The last two slots on this list were hard to decide between, and part of why Kanto’s here and not the bottom might just be extra slack for getting the franchise off the ground. Again, I don’t know that I really have anything to say.
7. Kalos. And like, I like Kalos. I do. But X and Y left me wanting more from it in the worst possible way, and while I was going to give it the benefit of the doubt when I was expecting them to do a third version or a second pair to fix that, they dropped this region like it was hot and moved right along to Gen VII. So ultimately, Kalos feels like a half-baked trial run for the rest of the 3DS titles and even GameFreak doesn’t really care about it all that much. And that sucks. Because there are a lot of things I like about Kalos: the Gen VI Pokémon design aesthetic is marvelous, its Pokédex being a collection of favorites across all Gens was a wonderful decision that thankfully seems to be the new norm, and I love Mega Evolution and have honestly docked points from Sun and Moon for being so quick to discard it. It’s controversial, but I’m very glad for the changes made to experience—I’m in my 20s, I don’t have the time or patience to grind and now I don’t have to. But for everything Kalos did well, there’s a lot that is just so sloppy. Characterization is a huge step back from Gen V. Plot is about as bare as Gen I. Can’t say there’s much of a post-game. X and Y, in hindsight, just feel like they could have been so much more, and while we can forgive that at the start of a generation, not following up with a correction just makes it look so much worse. Because now X and Y are all we have to judge Kalos with, and it doesn’t look good. Again, there’s a lot that I like about X and Y and Kalos—I enjoyed playing these games. I just wish I could have had an even better Kalos game after that. Sun and Moon feel like far more complete games, and remembering how abrupt the transition from Gen VI to Gen VII felt at the time, that’s somewhat strange to me. So I guess my relationship with Kalos now is a bit like what I once had with Unova, and maybe as time goes on I’ll be less bitter about the lack of a third game and I’ll feel better about this region. Chances are there will in the distant future come a day when X and Y are remade, and I dearly hope those take better advantage of Kalos.
So, there you have it. Who’s offended? :P

Top 5 videogames
HELLO FIRST OF ALL This is going to be a wall of text because videogames are arguably my favorite thing on this hell hole of a planet. Here are my top 5 games in no particular order
1.) BAITEN KAITOS ORIGINS
Baiten kaitos is a short series that consist of like… two whole games. The story is set place in this fantasy world where people have wings baised on their spirits and can get around using them its quite the party. My favorite of the two games however is origins for its amazing soundtrack (the battle music is always a bop for me), Amazing combat system which felt SO satisfying once you finally mastered it, and underrated voice acting (even as a kid i recognized how well bein’s voice acting was). Overall the writing in origins is much better and makes for some very lovable characters you get attached to throughout your adventure. This is one of my childhood classics and it has tons of replay value for me due to the fun combat system and insanely difficult boss fights. (I actually just… recently beat the full game because I couldn’t for the life of me do it as a kid) Its for game cube and if anyone can get their hands on at least origins I highly recommend it.
Another reason this game is my favorite is guillo, just.. everything about them they’re great.
2.) PHANTASY STAR EPISODE I&II PLUS
Ironically, I never enjoyed this game to its full potential since by the time I started playing it the “online” part was no longer an option as they disconnected the servers. But this game was still an insanely big part of my childhood and I easily sunk at least 500 hours into it. Phantasy star is a dungeon-crawler esque game about some humans attempting to colonize a foreign planet. Something goes wrong with the first ship they sent down to explore so of course they send you in to investigate, WHAT CAN POSSIBLY GO WRONG!?!? The game progresses and you get deeper and deeper into the chaotic wildlife of this planet and discover there’s more to disappearance of the original colony than previously thought! Once you beat the original story a hard mode is unlocked, which allows you to fight tougher enemies and get better weapons, scaling all the way from hard, very hard, to ultimate, which is where all the enemies completely change and the chance of getting legendary weapons skyrockets. This was a very fun co-op game again with a ton of replay value (replay value means a lot to me in a game cause WE WERE VERY POOR KIDS)
Even looking at this opening sequence for the game is giving me major nostalgia, I might crack it open again after this actually.
3.) POKEMON
tHESE FUCKERS WERE BOUND TO BE ON MY LIST EVENTUALLY
Pokemon has been such a vast influence on my gaming life and if I could pick them all to be in my list I would. I’m going to have to pick one specific pokemon to be on this list though…
POKEMOOOOOOOOOON PUZZLE LEAAAAAAAGUE
no but really my favorite is pokemon platinum
Pokemon platinum was the pinnacle of the series for me because it improved on the classic that was gen 4. Gen 4 is my favorite gen for many reasons, namely adding tons of great evolutions to previously forgotten pokemon (I love you roserade and mamoswine) Also paired with the absolute jamz that were the elite 4 battle music and Cynthia’s theme, it was absolutely amazing. Plus Dahlia is probably one of my favorite pokemon characters ever and she came in for platinum!
4.) The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
NOW I'M GOING TO SPEW TONS OF BIAS HERE SO BEAR WITH ME
Majora’s mask is probably one of the most hauntingly beautiful games nintendo has made in their entire history as a company. Really painting with broad strokes here I know. What really sells this game to me is the intricacy of the little details scattered throughout the game. The way an ever-present threat is not constantly thrown in your face but is ever looming, the way the game handles serious and harrowing topics like death in a macabre yet beautiful manner, the interesting events that happen in the game that are not necessary to the story but add to the lore. All of this adds just a level of polish to a game that was originally considered a scrap project of Ocarina of Time. I suppose in this last point I should also give credit to Ocarina of Time, but these two games also prompted my fascination with music. Both games loaded with amazing songs throughout their soundtrack Really improve the immersion experience of the player and add more substance to an already beautiful story.
5.) The World Ends With You
I really racked my brain around about what to include in this final spot, but none of the games I was thinking of honestly had quite the impact on me the way this game has. The World Ends With You is a jrpg from the perspective of this mopey guy named Neku who hates the world and everyone around him woe-is-me boo who. Neku DIES (Get shit on Neku) and winds up being trapped in something called the reaper games. The reaper games give you another shot at humanity if you win, but to enter you must offer up your most valuable possession. (If you win you could also become a reaper, the opponents of players in the game but thats uh, thats a whole nother thing)
This game had a completely unique fighting style where you had to control two different characters to fight enemies simultaneously on the DS’s dual screens. It was insanely difficult to master but once you could the game becomes incredibly addictive and fun. Throughout the entire game and Neku’s quest for humanity you discover what people really love and what it truly means to be human. Even the villains in the game offer amazing insight and philosophies on life that just kinda… stick with you? (I still remember that bullshit ass boss ho screamed ENJOY THE MOMENT every time you died) I guess it taught me to not take everything so seriously and just enjoy your life while uh, you’re, you know… alive. All while packaged into a neat fun game of course!
WOW THIS WAS A JOURNEY If you’re still reading this bud thanks, this was a joy to write!
#Gira Talks#Thanks for asking!#I got lazy towards the end that description doesnt to TWEWY justice#but its an amazing game with amazing characters#It was surprisingly hard to narrow down 5 games! I put more effort into this than I do with my homework#I need a nap after that

2: Favorite Pokémon type
God... I always feel so torn on this. I like pretty much all of them for different reasons and it’s hard to compare. I like using most types a lot and the way they can come together differently to form a well balanced team! Today I’ll say poison.
3: Favorite main series game
Platinum was the pinnacle of the series and I will kill for remakes
