Pokemon Card of the Day #3270: Energy Spinner (Unbroken Bonds)
Tumblr media
Energy Spinner was an Item that, on most turns, worked like the old Energy Search by letting you search your deck for a basic Energy card to put into your hand. If you went second and it was still your first turn, however, you got to search for up to 3 basic Energy cards instead. This was actually quite useful for some decks, including the likes of Zacian V which could use this and some discarding to accelerate early with Metal Saucer. It was also rather good in decks running multiple types of basic Energy, and sometimes it would just get put into a deck that just wanted an extra way to draw into an Energy card of the only type they had. It wasn't a must-run in most decks, but saw a good bit of play since its floor was access to an Energy and that meant it was rarely a bad card.

Been experimenting with creating different types of hats out of cards for a while now. The idea for this one came from a little brainstorming with another artist at a con I had a table at. Still not 100% happy with how the top turned out.

The turtle! I love the rainbow border ❤️ Stellar Crown is definitely my favorite set of 2024 so far.

idk how the full pokemon tcg is, but now that i've got three consistent decks going on pocket i can say that the types here really don't feel like they have much identity. it's not fair to compare it to magic the gathering because the actual flow of combat is fundamentally quite different, being 1-on-1 and all, but playing metal feels the same as playing fighting feels the same as playing lightning, and the ai themed decks feel super similar too.

Pokemon Card of the Day #3256: Energy Restore (Expedition)
Tumblr media
Energy Restore was a Trainer that needed some luck, as you had to flip 3 coins. Each heads had you put a Basic Energy card from your discard pile into your hand. You only had a 50% chance of being as good as Energy Retrieval, a card still available in Neo-On, but you also didn't need to discard a card to use this. In formats without Energy Retrieval it was a little more in the clear. It was used a bit in decks that tended to discard Energy a lot and sometimes really needed one back, though the luck factor meant you were getting just 1 Energy often enough that most players went for more reliable cards.
