are there any pokemon that can learn sign language?
there are some pokemon that can replicate or mimic the motions of human sign language, but no pokemon we know of can actually "speak" sign language. it's more like those buttons you sometimes see people teaching their pokemon to use- the pokemon just use them indiscriminately because they know "when i do this, i get something i want sometimes." it's about the same level as a pokemon knowing that certain words mean to use certain moves.
even among pokemon that can mimic signs, a lot of them dont have the manual dexterity for the finger movements some signs require. i think the most accurate use of signs ive seen were from a zoroark using illusions to mimic its deaf trainer, but even then the zoroark didnt actually know the language. it was just copying set phrases it had been taught.

I am SO pleased with how this turned out!! I commissioned @jmars-art to bring my vision to life of a personal headcanon of the professor being an avid journaler - and will be a future fic scene! JMars was professional and responsive as well as added great insight and recommendations to enhance my idea further - there's something really special when you can fine-tune ideas with other passionate artists and let creativity lead the way. The quality speaks for itself, and is truly stunning.
This will be a future scene for my current multi-ch fic, Cognitive Dissonance, which takes place post-canon during Arven's final year at Uva and is my story of writing Arven's journey towards closure that feels raw and real to me, while he navigates a new relationship that is jeopardized after the press finds out about the professor's fate.
After what feels like hitting rock-bottom and being forced into isolation in his dorm room, Clavell stops by and hands over to Arven all Turo's journals he was able to discreetly retrieve from Area Zero. Arven is quick to realize that many of the journals are not all research-focused and are personal diaries spanning years, even from before he was born. He gets a first-hand look at the inner thoughts of his father and insight and clarity over what happened to him over the years and the relationship with his absent mother.

This is part of an ongoing project I am doing by commissioning artists in the community/fandom to draw a scene from a select chapter. I am an advocate and supporter of the arts as a creative myself and wanted to try something that involves and supports other artists 😊 and also to keep myself motivated to keep writing 😅

I watched Pokemon 4Ever for the first time today, and you can really tell that I haven't watched anything Pokemon related in 10+ years because I didn't realize that, yeah, Brock's voice is beat for beat the exact same as Kaiba's (minus any maniacal laughter). This has made any flirting Brock does with women hilarious to me in retrospect lol

(I’m trying to practice drawing in general, with different poses, angles, body language, expressions… Also learning what exactly my pens look like on paper! So here’s a dump of the stuff I’ve made so far today, and of course, my brain wouldn’t rest until I colored it all 😔🥲 Oh well.)

Cognitive Conductors Ch.4 (END)
A Bonus Scene
(AN: Just a short little scene! So I'll post the full thing here instead of doing the usual preview.) Here's the AO3 link if you need it
Summary: If Joker was in the right place at the right time.
(If Joker was in the right place at the right time, he could have witnessed something…)
▲▽
Dashing into Mementos on his own, Joker arrives at a warped station platform where he sees the distinct figure of a man in black, standing alone with his feet just behind the safety line. The man stares at the tunnel wall, back turned towards the thief, either not noticing his presence or not acknowledging it.
Joker takes a step forward, about to call out to the man when a train suddenly arrives at the station, speeding in through the tunnels. The rushing wind causes the man’s black coat to flap and flutter. The vehicle moves so fast, the red light of the windows blurring together, and it seems like it will pass the station completely.
…But somehow, it does slow down to a stop. The wind dies down and the area is steeped in silence until the doors of the train slide open with a sharp hiss. More red light spills out of the open doorway onto the station floor, but not onto the man in black. Instead, a shadow casts onto the man, the source of which is an individual who looks much like him.
His lookalike. His counterpart. A man in white.
For a moment, both identical men just stand there in the middle of the doorway. The one in black looking in and the one in white looking out.
Then, the man in white offers his hand, palm up, to his counterpart on the other side of the train door.
The man in black takes it, gripping the offered hand tightly.
He’s yanked into the vehicle, a black coat disappearing into red light as the doors slide shut behind him with finality.
And off the train goes, departing from the station and disappearing into twisted tunnels. Full speed ahead.
Amongst the rushing wind and the rumbling rails of the leaving train, Joker can vaguely hear the echoes of boisterous laughter and he smiles to himself.

AN: A reunion cutscene for the twins since we didn’t get to see it happen! It could possibly be a special cutscene that’s triggered under certain requirements.
I hope you enjoyed this self-indulgent exploration of mine! :D

Have you heard the studies about Koko the Slaking? I grew up thinking they could teach a Pokemon how to talk, but recently I saw in Mewtuve a video explaining that it was just anthropomorphism and pattern recognition. What are your thoughts???
koko had a very...complicated situation. the short answer is no, koko the slaking did not learn how to speak in sign language.
almost all pokemon have, to some extent, an ability to make word associations. it's what allows us to battle alongside them successfully. some pokemon are better wired to understand human language than others. for example, ninetales' inherent psychic abilities allow it to better process human speech (studies have shown that they can understand a greater complexity of modifiers than most pokemon), and a captive chatot was able to combine words together into phrases with a very rudimentary "grammar."
slaking is unfortunately not one of those pokemon. typically, the pokemon that tend to respond best to human language experiments are the ones that have complex social structures that slaking really just lack. the only time you'll really see them together in the wild is when they're tolerating each other's presence in the fruit season. they aren't cognitively wired for complex communication because it's not particularly helpful to them.
in koko's case, i don't doubt that she was able to replicate some signs and understand some basic word associations. but it also seems that she used sign language in a fairly arbitrary way, with no indication that she understood how to construct a meaningful sentence. there's also the issue that, because slaking's movements are so slow, her interpretors would sometimes read into movements because they were anticipating certain responses.
honestly, koko's situation was tragic in a lot of ways, and unfortunately misinformation about her has done a lot ot damage to the public understanding of how pokemon communicate.

I’m fairly new to the aa fandom and as much as I agree that phoenix and edgeworth have an absurd amount of repressed gay sexual tension, I had so much cognitive dissonance realizing people make smut of them. what do you mean they’re getting naked. to me their silly little suits are part of their bodies like pokemon
