Gonna be a hater for a second but whyyy do people say phoenix and edgeworth have been in love since they were 9. Who the fuck falls in love at 9 years old. Also does iris mean nothing to you. Yeah they’ve been pining since forever but can’t that be since aa1 or something instead of just, since they were children because I guess that’s when they met. If the reasoning is “but why would phoenix become a lawyer for edgeworth if he wasn’t in love !!!” I don’t wanna hear it I hate “no one would do that for a friend” reasoning
#we all make gay jokes about becoming a lawyer for him me included#and like. yes#but also what it shows most importantly is their connection#and how important being there for people is for phoenix#phoenix didn’t literally Only become a lawyer to chase edgeworth#he says himself he was inspired by edgeworth to stand up for others#and that he wanted to be the person who’s there for people who have no one on their side#like edgeworth was for him#he genuinely finds a calling to law !#mia probably inspired him too#point is. there’s a lot to say about phoenix choosing to become a lawyer#and like yes it definitely shows how strong his bond and connection are with edgeworth#but idk. to me it feels like it’s really simplifying it to say “so that’s why they’re in love 👍 and so they must’ve been in love as kids”#but also I’ll say it again. who the fuck falls in love at 9#also sorry it’s the iris enjoyer in me but why must we act like she meant nothing to phoenix#she clearly did when he was feenie#and even in aa3. it was visible#literally in the credits when they’re visiting her in prison he had his eyes glued on her#and he always believed in her#this post isn’t saying boooo narumitsu yay feenris not at all#i agree phoenix and edgeworth are in love how could I not#but sometimes I get annoyed by popular… notions ? tropes ?#that I feel ignore the actual characterisation and writing to make it gayer#you don’t need to make it gayer ! it’s already gay as shit !#like there’s lots of content there man you don’t need to flanderise them#and to run over female characters cough iris#i wrote this very spontaneously hopefully it’s not nonsense#but I’m not tagging this I don’t want to bother ppl with my hatering#general my post tag

DadWorth AU: Part 3 (Justice For All)
Justice for All has to be one of the angstier parts of this AU, right up there with some ideas I have for Apollo Justice. Especially considering the whole Miles “chooses death” thing. So, let’s dive into it!
< Part 2 | Part 4 >
Reunion, and Turnabout
Things fast forward a couple of months after the end of Rise from the Ashes. Gumshoe’s been taking care of Kay since Miles kind of fucked off. He’s been doing his best, and so are Sebastian and Klavier -- who have been trying to cheer up their third musketeer ever since they found out what happened. But Kay is miserable.
So, now summer break is here for her, Gumshoe decides to take her out to the mountains for the day to get out in nature and hopefully get her mind off of things. Even if it is for a little while.
However, that plan is totally ruined when he gets a call about a murder nearby. He’s the only detective in the area, so they have to go down to Kurain Village to check it out. And that’s where they run into Phoenix for the first time since the end of Rise. Both he and Kay are not doing well in the aftermath of that case, and neither are really sure what to do around each other. Needless to say, the whole interaction is awkward.
Gumshoe does not pick up on this. He asks Phoenix if he could keep an eye on Kay while he takes care of the investigation. After some hesitation and deliberation, Phoenix agrees. So Kay becomes his partner button and Phoenix finally get to interact one-on-one with each other during the investigation for Reunion.
This is the first time they get to do this, since they were either with Maya or Ema on previous cases. It’s still a bit awkward, but when Phoenix finds out that she’s studying to be a defense attorney, things get a little bit easier as they find common ground.
Phoenix unknowingly starting to settle into a mentor role? Yes.
Kay is super turned off by Morgan Fey (getting chills up her spine and a faint memory of Dahlia Hawthorne -- she saw the Fawles trial. Phoenix also gets the same vibes from her.) And is surprisingly good with Pearl.
Her reaction to learning that Franziska is the prosecutor for this case catches Phoenix’s attention. Kay hasn’t heard from Franziska outside of a few text messages to check in on her over the past few months, so the fact that she’s in the country and Kay’s only finding out about it now makes her wonder what’s going on.
Kay goes to meet with Maya at the detention center with Phoenix, and kind of gets overly excited when she sees that Maya is channeling Mia because if you remember, she looked up Mia. Mia was an idol for her. So getting to meet her -- even if it is through spirit channeling -- is the highlight of her week.
And then we get to the trial. Phoenix asks Kay if she wants to stand co-counsel and Kay immediately jumps at the chance to say yes. So this is technically her first trial (she’s excited for it, but a little bit sad that Miles isn’t there to see her). Franziska, on the other hand, is surprised that Kay is standing at the defense’s bench with Phoenix Wright, leading to a lot of things including seeing Kay as a traitor (reason why will be explained later.)
So, Kay stands in for Pearl as co-counsel. As a result, her spirit channeling abilities are not revealed until much later. In the second trial day, she’s not present due to Gumshoe’s intervention and keeping her busy (something which Pearl agrees to so long as Kay and Phoenix get Maya a Not Guilty).
The investigation moments are full of small bonding moments between Phoenix and Kay as they get to know each other a bit better.
So, Team Wright-Faraday get a Not Guilty verdict as promised. Kay’s super proud of herself for managing to do this and it puts her on cloud nine. Franziska only believes that Phoenix won because he had a semi-competent co-counsel with him (Aunt Fran starting to show that she’s proud of Kay a little bit, but is still incredibly pissed that she lost.) Overall, she isn’t sure how to feel about Kay in that moment, and it all comes down to one simple reason:
This is the first time Kay has smiled in months. Everyone who knows her is relieved to see it back.
After the case is closed, Maya does thank Kay for helping and Kay in return does try to cheer her up after the whole “morgan stabbed maya in the back” thing starts to settle in. Am I saying Maya and Kay friendship? Maya and Kay friendship. It starts here.
So, things are starting to look a little bit better for Kay.
The Lost Turnabout
It’s not... Kay’s not involved in this one. Teenage shenanigans happen here as the new school year at Themis starts up.
The first day of school is always pretty easy, but it gets pretty depressing for Kay when one of her professors decides a good idea to break the ice by talking about some of the more ridiculous things that have happened in court cases. It gets the class laughing, and isn’t a bad idea...
Unfortunately for Kay, though, the professor also brings up a certain defense attorney cross-examining a parrot. The memory of that trial brings up a whole lot of feelings for Kay and she just kind of falls quiet for the rest of the day.
But luckily, Klavier and Sebastian have known Kay for a year now, and they realize something’s wrong. So they (primarily Klavier, since he instigates the whole thing) decide to do something about it and distract her. Here is where teenage shenanigans come about.
Just wholesome fun with what is slowly becoming a favorite chaotic trio that ends with everyone collapsed on a couch with an old movie playing in the background. ...and possibly a few appearances from other characters. Who knows?
Kay only finds out about Phoenix’s trial after the fact from Maya, and she’s not sure whether to be impressed that Phoenix managed to do all that with amnesia or laugh about it. She decides to do both.
Turnabout Big Top
It all starts with Phoenix going from ace attorney to ace babysitter as he’s in charge of four teenagers and one small child. Over the past few months, he’s gotten acquainted with Klavier and Sebastian as well, especially after the trio used the Wright & Co. Law Offices as their own personal hangout spot to get homework done and hide out when needed (thank you Kay).
The only reason Kay is brought on as co-counsel for this case is because a: its winter break so she doesn’t have school to worry about and b: the time frame is the same as when Miles was arrested the year prior. If Phoenix is having a rough time, then so is Kay. Especially since this will also be her first birthday since the whole incident. She’s also at Wright & Co. for the same reason when Maya calls up with the case.
This case is not the best distraction for Kay, but at least its something. Lesson learned: as a lawyer, you gotta take the good with the frustrating. Things get worse with Franziska prosecuting again. Kay still doesn’t get what’s up with her and why she’s still getting called a traitor.
The boys are also in on this case because why not, though they don’t stand as co-counsel but rather just help with the investigation. Because we all know that Kristoph and Blaise wouldn’t agree to them standing on the defense’s side, one more than the other.
Kay openly admitting to getting a headache while trying to figure out what the heck is actually going on during the first trial day. She grew up with the Master of Logic himself, so trying to make sense of this without all the information is making her head run in circles. But she’s not going to give up.
It’s revealed when Franziska confronts Phoenix & Co. outside of the lodging house later that day that the reason Franziska calls Kay a traitor is that she deliberately is siding with the man responsible for Miles’s “death”, something that she never thought Kay would do.
Kay never blames Phoenix for what happened to Miles. She mostly blames Gant (and von Karma somewhat) for it. They were the ones who pushed him, not Phoenix. So, when Franziska openly blames Phoenix for what happened, Kay gets pretty pissed.
When Phoenix and Maya continue their investigation, Kay goes to confront Franziska on that matter and just goes off. Months of bottled up emotions just kind of explode outward, and Franziska is the unfortunate target of it all. This blow-up is also the first time that Kay refers to Miles as her dad. Which hits pretty hard. Franziska starts regretting a few choices she’s made today. Klavier and Sebastian pull her away as she starts to break down.
So they just... let her cry it out in the circus’s cafeteria. They end up being the ones who find out about the incident with the lion (once Kay’s calmed down) rather that Phoenix and Maya. The story has them racing over to them, catching the duo just as they’re about to enter Acro’s room and things go about pretty much the same way they do canonically from there.
The next day is a bit hard, and its easy to pick up on the tension between Kay and Franziska here. Taking a page out of the anime, Kay, Klavier, a reluctant Sebastian and Maya recreating the crime for the entire court. She does feel bad about having to indict Acro, though, due to the circumstances surrounding everything.
Kay does a pretty good job, something which Gumshoe relays as a message to her, at the end of the trial, much to her surprise. Who else would be proud of her is something that she wants to know.
Meanwhile, Miles Edgeworth wonders how he’s going to tell his daughter that he’s still alive upon his return to the country. (and yes, he was the one who told gumshoe to tell kay that he was proud of her)
Farewell, My Turnabout
So, Kay at this point still doesn’t know that Miles is alive. He wants to get everything settled before he makes any grand reveals to anyone. He’s also still trying to figure out how to do it since that wasn’t supposed to happen. Kay wasn’t supposed to think he was dead. He told her that he was leaving, sure, but Kay was also half-asleep when he did. So, misunderstandings~
Meanwhile, Phoenix takes the girls (Maya, Pearl and Kay) to the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix. Kay’s gotten decently close to the members of Wright & Co. over the past few months, that much is clear by now.
Kay gets upset about Corrida’s murder because ya know. Jammin’ Ninja fan. She hopes that Engrade gets locked away for doing it. Maya thinks she just doesn’t like the Nickel Samurai, which isn’t that far off. Kay just doesn’t like Engarde thanks to reading Klavier’s tabloid magazines. She never gets to explain the contents of those magazines, though. Phoenix finds out about them later.
Things take a sharp turn when Maya is called to the front desk to answer her “call”. Kay goes with Maya because ya know. Buddy system. (”girls don’t let each other go anywhere alone, nick!” “*sigh* i will never understand teenagers...”) i think. you know. where this about to go--
So, yeah. Kay gets kidnapped alongside Maya. She puts up a pretty decent fight against de Killer (look at the people she was around growing up, Kay probably does know a little self-defense), but in the end, she still gets ‘napped. And so, Phoenix has to defend Engarde or the two girls will “disappear”.
Things are made worse, as Phoenix is accosted by two teenage boys who can’t get in touch with their third musketeer who didn’t show up for school that day. He’s just trying to do his job, but Klavier and Sebastian are really stubborn and will not leave him alone.
And everything gets worse when Miles makes his grand revival. And then is made the prosecutor for this case. So, Phoenix is not having a very good week at all.
Phoenix and Gumshoe are doing the best to keep the fact that the girls are being held hostage from Edgeworth and the boys. Emphasis on try. All three know that there’s something going on, but they can’t figure out what.
Meanwhile, Kay and Maya are in a wine cellar. Kay has tried several times to break down the door, but it hasn’t worked. de Killer took their phones, so they have no way of contacting the outside. They’re screwed unless they can escape.
Maya realizes that they do have a way to contact the outside and uses her spirit channeling powers to contact Mia, and with Kay’s help manages to explain what’s going on and giving a message to Mia to give to Phoenix.
So, Pearl finally reveals her spirit channeling powers. It freaks Phoenix out at first, but he gets over it quickly because at this point, he’s kind of used to Fey Family Weirdness.
The first part of the trial goes on as pretty much the same as it did before. Afterwards, Phoenix does his best to keep the fact that the girls are kidnapped from Miles because he’s gonna flip the fuck out. And he fails. And Miles kind of does flip out.
So, de Killer and Engarde (more so de Killer because he did his research, he knows the connection with Kay that Edgeworth has) have two pawns to work with and dangle over both the prosecution and defense. And now Edgeworth has two assistants on his side: Sebastian and Klavier, who don’t want to see Kay hurt. However, as future prosecutors, they can’t do much to help Phoenix. So, they help out with the investigation (and using the excuse as this being extra credit for anyone who asks why there are two teenagers here.)
On the other side, Maya and Kay break out of the room they were locked in thanks to a card Maya finds. Things go about as well as they do canonically, but with more struggle. Kay makes a fucking mess trying to defend herself and Maya from de Killer, which will later show the police that something definitely went down here (and concerning the heck out of a good handful of people in the process).
Kay may not know the truth about the Yatagarasu yet, but she sure is acting like the Yatagarasu.
The investigation goes about as well as you expect it to. Klavier and Sebastian are doing their best, but they can’t do much since they’re still only students. And Miles is worried as hell for Kay and ends up wanting to tear Engarde apart. Klavier is right to not like Engarde, as was Kay earlier.
When the trial starts up again, you have both the prosecution, the defense and a few members of the gallery nervous as hell. Gumshoe is doing his best to find the girls, but Miles and Phoenix still need to stall for time.
They do their best, but things are going about as well as they do canonically with Edgeworth being more on edge due to Kay being in danger. And the last time he saw her was when he left. So, he wants to be able to reconcile with her.
Things go on much like they do in canon. The note, Gumshoe’s accident, etc. Mia’s with Kay, doing her best to help, but she’s not sure what more she can do because the girls are weak and tired from being held captive for so long.
More worry on both parts.
When de Killer threatens to kill Maya and Kay when Edgeworth and Phoenix press him and try to get more time, Miles is also there to beg him to leave them alone. This is also the first time that Miles openly refers to Kay as his daughter.
Not much is different there out. They manage to expose Engarde as the asshole that he is, the girls are released and Engarde is declared guilty.
The scene with Franziska at the airport and Phoenix giving Miles the whip takes place a bit earlier, as that’s where Miles goes first before going to meet with Kay. Because he’s still trying to figure out how he’s going to talk to Kay again.
Phoenix and the others meet Maya and Kay at the hospital (Kay and Maya were held captive without much food or water for about three days, and Kay has a few minor injuries from de Killer, so they do need medical attention). Maya has a tearful reunion with Mia (as channeled by Pearl), and Kay gets tackled by her friends on both sides.
And then Miles Edgeworth walks into the room a short while later and Kay does not know what to say. She thought that he was dead for over a year, and a lot of things start bubbling to the surface. She starts tearing up because she thought she would never see Miles again, and he with her.
As soon as he gets close enough, Kay hugs him and calls him stupid in a couple different ways. Miles accepts it and apologizes for making her worry. He promises not to vanish like that again, and returns the promise that Kay made in part 2: to not keep secrets from her again.
So, what they didn’t get at the end of part 2, Miles and Kay finally get at the end of JfA: a chance to actually rebuild and reconcile their relationship without anything getting in the way.
So Justice for All ends on a pretty good note.
That may be the end of Justice for All, but it’s not the end of the story. There are still more ripples to come and fun shenanigans.

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Live special #3, August 9th 2016.
✯📆Kaoru starts by trying to remember when the last live special was, getting it wrong by saying it was at the start of year (It was actually in Dec). Kaoru comments on how the amount of staff in the studio is different from usual when they go live. They also have half-price off food from the supermarket to keep them going for 2 hours.
✵🐎They then welcome Hiranabe and Tasai to join them for the show. Hiranabe worries whether he'll still have a job in the morning after doing this show. He doesnt want to lose his job, as he just also lost a ton of money on the horse racing.
Kaoru then suggest they might get a visit from Kami at some point, and they will try to have a phone call with Dobashi, who is currenly in Brazil 🇧🇷.
He then gets started with the top 5 stories of the first half of 2016. Counting down from...
●5. North Korean satellite lauch/ America and Japan suspect an intercontinental ballistic missile launch - Hiranabe thinks American satellites are so advanced that America will know exactly what N.Korea is doing. Joe thinks the wording/phrasing in such news articles makes a big difference as to how the story is percieved.
Kami tells them he is ok to appear on the show tonight, as he managed to catch the last train home after work. He's now enjoying taking part with a beer.
●4. A boom in adultery - Celebrity Becky's affair (plus apology to her sponsers at a press conference) at the start of the year has set off a string of public revelations about the adulterous affairs of other celebrities, all of whom have also immediately held press conferences to apologize. Before this year, celebrities tended to use their personal blogs etc to address the accusations. Joe brings up something he heard from Nuclear Safety Chief Madarame Haruki when interviewing him about the 3.11 disaster. Madarame said that it has long been Japan's culture to never badmouth a samurai who has commited seppuku. Badmouthing such a person makes you worse than whatever they did. In this way, if celebs appear at a press conference with tears in their eyes and full of apology, they can avoid any future dragging about their past mistakes.
✵🏘️At this point Kaoru takes a break from the countdown to read out an email from a listener. The email is from someone who currently lives in their hometown, but is thinking of moving to Tokyo, so they want to know Kaoru's advice for moving to Tokyo for the first time as a single person. Kaoru says he moved to Tokyo 19 years ago, and lived in Nerima ward at first, specifically the neighborhood Fujimidai. This was to be near to where Dir's manager lived. The rent was ¥120,000 a month for a 2LDK apartment, which he shared with Kyo. Kami gives out advice to not be picky about specific locations when searching for a cheap place. Hiranabe brings up the website 'Oshima teru', where you can check to see which apartments have previously been the sites of murders/deaths. The rent for such apartments is often abnormally cheap.
✵🤭🤭🤭 Next Kaoru moves onto some news which interested Hiranabe a lot, the story being very typical of him....'Admission of squirting'. (Lots of laughs from the others, and Joe wants to know more 😆). The story relates to the model Darenogare Akemi. She appeared on a radio show and was denying the rumour that she was the type to lie still during sex, she claimed that she moves around and vocalises a lot during sex. The host of the show asked her, 'Yeh, but I bet you don't squirt?'. She replied on air, 'I do, I did for the first time a year and a half ago'. Hiranabe decided to dedicate a whole page in Tokyo Sports to this story.
Hiranabe was also fond of the Beat Takeshi 'Comǎneci pose' story, invovling actresses Ayase Haruka, Nagasawa Masami, and Hirose Suzu. This story was talked about previously on Ep 25.
✵☎️Next, they try having a direct phone convo with a listener. The caller brings up the news of the 2016 World Happiness Report, in which Japan ranked at #53. Joe explains these results are obtained by surveying local populations, but each nation has different standards of what happiness is. Kaoru thinks happiness is not something that should be ranked in this way. The caller then asks Hiranabe why he never learns to not spend so much money on women. He answers 'Because Im an idiot'. Joe asks the caller what she thinks Hiranabe looks like. She says 'a face which can't be broadcast'. (Laughs all round).
✵🎶Next they listen to a few of the new jingle entries. They like the second entry, which apparently contains phrases influened by a couple of Dir songs. They also like the fifth entry and ask Kami to do the voice-over on it, which they all find hilarious. Kaoru says he might use some of these entries on the show in future.
📞✵🇧🇷Next they connect via the phone to Dobashi, who is in Brazil covering the 2016 Olympics for Tokyo Sports. He is calling from the table tennis venue, as he is covering a match there. He says he has seen a few Japanese athletes win gold medals in other events, and encourages listeners to buy Tokyo Sports to read his reports.
They ask Dobashi various questions about security, and the local food etc, then Hiranabe asks him if he has any of the commemorative Olympic condoms, and whether or not he has used them. Dobashi says he has some, but hasn't used them. He opened one to check it out, and it was so thick, obviously not made in Japan (his words). Hiranabe asks him to bring some back as souvenirs 🤭😆
✵Before moving onto # 3 in the countdown, Kaoru reads out an email. This is from a listener who is a fan of Dobashi and wants to know what kind of woman he likes. Hiranabe knows his type..he likes kinda crazy women. Another email from 'radio name: 0.3mm' asks for some Olympic condoms. The last email asks them whether they like watching movies on regular screens, or on 3D/4D screenings. Kaoru prefers regular screens, otherwise he finds it difficult to concentrate. He recently watched the movie 'Shin Godzilla' (in 2D), and was anxious seeing familiar Tokyo landmarks getting trashed.
Continuing the countdown...
●3. Muhammed Ali's death. This was discussed in ep 39, about how Ali was very outspoken in regards to segregation. Despite Obama becoming the first black president, Joe questions how much discrimination against black people by white people in the US has actually improved. Hiranabe agrees with Joe, in that based on the news, race relations are not improving at all. Joe says we must be careful not to focus too much on the big headline of Obama as President. That doesn't suddenly mean everything is ok now.
Hiranabe then talks for a bit about his memories of prowrestler Antonio Inoki, who fought with Ali once.
●2. The eventual resignation of (former) Tokyo Governor Masuzoe Yōichi. Masuzoe had held onto his position as long as possible, claiming he was innocent. He's used specific techniques during press conferences to avoid getting cornered. Hiranabe was impressed with the words of new candidate Torigoe Shuntaro, who used the phrase, 'Everyone please get distracted', instead of the usual 'Don't get distracted', which candidates usually finish their speeches with. Joe draws comparisons with the 3.11 response. A third party investigation committee was set up in both the 3.11 case and Masuzoe's case, but if the guilty parties are choosing which lawyers make up the committee, its not very impartial in the end. Use of the word 'third-party' is another trick politicians use to try to look innocent.
✵☎️Next they take another phone call from a listener. This caller's first fave news of the year is the announcement of new Dir en grey tours. His second is about Pokemon Go. He asks if Kaoru plays. Kaoru says he's already given up, after getting to level 12. Joe interrupts to say Kami looks as if he's about to fall asleep.
Reaching the end of the countdown..
●1. Mystery Phoenix appears in sun. This is a story from Tokyo Sports back in May. Shapes resembling a phoenix have been spotted in various photos of the sun which were released by NASA. Tokyo Sports offered the suggestion of whether this might actually be real. Tasai hands a copy of Tokyo Sports out to everyone to show them the image, but Kaoru is more interested in another story on the same page: 'Discovery in Arizona of trunk from 20cm tall elephant with fish gills'. Joe then reads out some similarly crazy headlines from the newspaper in his hands. The question arises of whether this story merits being at #1.
✵To finish a quick suggestion of another live special at the end of the year, as long as everyone still has their job, and are not in Atami...., and Kaoru plugs his upcoming tours. In the last min, they all agree that Kami voicing the jingle was the funniest bit of the show. Kaoru wishes the listeners good luck at work tomorrow after staying up late to listen to the show.

逆転裁判 逆転姉妹 Part 5 (開廷 1)
This part goes from April May giving her first testimony to the end of the trial. Here’s the first part of the trial, and here’s the first part of the entire case.
Sorry if this post is a little longer than others, but I managed to find very interesting things :D
1) Small difference. If you keep pressing April on her first statement Edgeworth will eventually come in and say to Phoenix “Mr. Wright! I will not have you badgering my witness!”. In Japanese he’s more insulting, saying “Defense! I want you to stop this despicable/cowardly conduct!” (“弁護人!卑劣な行為はやめてもらいたい!”)
2) I vaguely referenced it in previous posts, but now I can confirm: April is more “kawaii desu ne” in the Japanese version (for example she talks in third person, elongates vowels at the end, and sometimes uses childish words), and only slightly sexual, while in the English version it’s flipped and she’s much more sexually charged - a small example is how they replaced stars ★ with *wink*. It makes sense considering the different values in the two cultures - in Japan cuteness more appealing than sexiness, and it’s the other way around in the West. The English version put a lot more jokes regarding her, for example her being called “a big far liar” and taking offense only to being called “fat”.
3) Instead of asking “which hand do I hold my knife with”, April asks which hand does she hold chopsticks in. Of course :P
4) Another small difference that I liked. In English, Phoenix says, in response to the Judge asking him to withdraw his question, “But questions are all I have!”, while in Japanese he says “This method is my weapon!”. I like both versions, the English one flows better while the Japanese one highlights how asking questions is Phoenix’s most important asset in the courtroom.
5) If you mistakenly say that April couldn’t have heard the clock from the hotel, in English Edgeworth says “Without [proof], you have nothing. You ARE nothing.” In Japanese he doesn’t insult Phoenix at all, besides calling him rookie. (I guess it’s to compensate for calling him despicable earlier)
6) When Phoenix reveals Maya’s cellphone in court, and Edgeworth gets furious and mutters that he will cut Gumshoe’s salary for his incompetence, Phoenix thinks to himself “My heart goes out to you, Edgeworth. Not.” In Japanese, he simply says “Oh dear, poor thing” (“おやおや、かわいそうに...”), which might be about Gumshoe himself? It’s another case of the English version taking an ambiguous like and translating it to paint Phoenix as more antagonistic towards Edgeworth.
7) This has just been bothering me: the last time April snaps on the stand, she says “Shut up, all of you! What gives you the right to talk to ME like that! You... you LAWYER!”. In Japanese, at the end she says “このタコがぁ!” and... for the life of me I can’t understand the meaning. Does タコ here stand for “octopus”? “Kite”? “Callus”? What slang am I missing??
8) This one threw me for a loop. The GBA version of the game lacks a lot of dialogue compared to the DS port - and therefore the English version - after you ask April if she is the killer or why did she use the wiretap.
if you choose the first option, as soon as Phoenix asks if she did it, April says that at the time of the incident she was getting room service and they can try asking the bellboy, the Judge asks for Phoenix’s next course of action, and then you have to choose whether you want to call the bellboy or keep cross-examining April.
if you choose the second option, the dialogue immediately jumps from the Judge saying “While this court does not condone the defense's tone of speech, he has a point. Well, Miss May? Do you have an explanation for the court?” to April explaining her alibi like above.
In the DS version, there are extra tidbits like April insulting Phoenix, her accidentally revealing she used the wiretap, her guessing what Phoenix was thinking about her and swearing she can prove her innocence, or her saying that she asked for iced coffee and then explaining what it is (plus a bit of a joke where Phoenix repeats in hiragana the English nouns April says in katanaka, because I guess in Japan back in 2001 iced coffee wasn’t well know yet).
This surprised me because up to this point, there haven’t been significant differences in structure! Especially not between GBA and DS! I wonder why they felt the need to do this, and how much they re-wrote the script for the DS port.
8) The infamous “Objection! That was... objectionable!” is in Japanese “Objection! I raise an objection right away!”, with the Judge replying “Objection overruled right away”. とりあえず can mean “right away”, “for the time being”, “first of all” or “at once”, and every one of these options make Edgeworth sound delightfully awkward
9) At the very end of the trial, Edgeworth, instead of saying “T-these accusations are... ludicrous!” (because Phoenix just rubbed in his face how he manipulated the bellboy’s testimony), says “I cannot believe this”, which can either mean “I cannot believe these accusations” or, as I think, “I cannot believe I’ve been upstaged by this amateur”, which would mean that at least my boy is honest with his dishonesty. He also stops calling Phoenix キミ and uses キサマ, because he hasn’t been rude enough apparently.
Enjoy you boob-bouncing nightmares.

Witches, Chapter 21: post-trial wrap-up. No, seriously, finally, it’s over. It’s been....3000 years....
[Seelie of Kurain Chapter Masterlist] [ao3]
[Witches Chapter Masterlist] [ao3]
----
It’s all there, on the record, to end the case, to make the next trial go smoother: the victim, Jack Shipley, slipped and fell and Rimes couldn’t pull him back to safety; Orla and Sasha did nothing wrong, and neither did Ora, a year ago. Azura Summers’ death was a heart attack. Two accidental deaths, and Rimes trying to get revenge on the wrong orca for something that never needed to be avenged. All this pain and agony, all because the victim wanted to keep it a secret that there were two orcas.
It never needed to happen this way.
Sometimes Phoenix thinks it’s easier to deal with cases where one of the parties involved was actively a malicious murderer. Because it hurts, god does it hurt, if the victim or killer is someone that they knew, loved, trusted, and Phoenix has both been the one in pain and the one trying to console his clients, but at least there’s a feeling that justice was served. Someone got what they deserved, in the end.
No one deserved this nightmare.
The court officers don’t escort Rimes out right away; Sasha, out of the defendant’s chair, out of suspicion, hurries forward to speak with him. He doesn’t even seem to notice her approaching. He might not have blinked since Phoenix told him about Azura’s heart condition, since Rimes himself realized that everything he did just hurt innocent people, and demanded to know why Phoenix couldn’t just let him be called a murderer and punished as such. Yeah, he’s criminally liable for a lot, and everyone here knows it, the judge has even said it, but - he did not want to kill Jack Shipley, and that still means something. Rimes doesn’t deserve a death penalty like Rimes seems to think he deserves.
“Hey, Marlon,” Sasha says. He jumps, slamming his shin into the witness stand. He really didn’t notice her. “When this is all done, y’know - served out your sentence and rehabilitation - you’d better come back to the aquarium, you hear?”
“But…” He doesn’t even say anything else. He lets everything that’s happened in the past half an hour stand for itself.
“We’re pirates, remember? Cap’n Orla’s Swashbucklers! A pirate crew’s not gonna care about criminal records in hiring!” She seems to be deliberately missing the point. Rimes doesn’t say anything else. “Hey. Marlon. That whole, um, hulking out thing - you didn’t - that wasn’t some kind of catastrophic deal, right? You - you okay?”
And of course he isn’t, not in the broad scheme of things, and of course Sasha isn’t okay in that sense either, but she only means one thing and that’s the thing that Phoenix has been wondering, and Blackquill has already been escorted out of the courtroom but Taka is perched just off to the side, listening in too. What did he bargain away, thinking he’d gained something useful?
Rimes slumps until his forehead hits the witness stand. “Had’ta give up being a vegetarian,” he mumbles.
“Wait,” Athena says, “do you mean you had to give up meat or you had to—”
“I was a vegetarian.” Rimes doesn’t lift his head. The way he’s doubled over hurts Phoenix’s back and neck by proxy. “But I have to eat meat now.”
Whether he was a vegetarian for personal or religious reasons, or health reasons, or something as simple as he thought raw meat was gross to look at and hated cooking with it and had to functionally become a vegetarian (like Phoenix his first year having a kitchen except takeout sushi isn’t vegetarian and ramen and pizza aren’t a healthy vegetarian diet) - whatever it was, going back to meat in the diet is some sort of sacrifice. And that so often is the cornerstone of a deal: a sacrifice. Giving something up. A name, a soul, a skill, a principle, some cash for an all-you-can-eat buffet—
And it could’ve been so, so much worse for Rimes. He’s lucky.
“I made the deal for strength,” he adds, still hunched over, like his spine has been wrenched out of him and replaced with jelly. “I thought - I thought I could be strong enough then to help. But I wasn’t strong enough to hang onto the captain, and all the rest - physical strength didn’t matter. Didn’t help me at all.”
Which, Phoenix wouldn’t be surprised if whichever fae gave him the magatama knew that it wouldn’t. It’s a human thing - and a fae thing, it’s a people thing, to not know what would actually help. What they really need, versus what they think they need.
Sasha steps around the witness stand and pulls Rimes around into a hug, his head slumped down onto her shoulder instead of the stand now. Phoenix hears, and thinks he isn’t supposed to, Rimes’ ragged repeated “I’m sorry”s and “It’s my fault”s.
“Yeah and you’re still my friend, y’know that,” Sasha says.
The magatama slips from Rimes’ hand and hits the floor, shattering with a sound like it’s made of glass. Rimes shudders and trembles and his whole body shrinks, back down to the man he was before.
-
“You never cease to surprise me.”
Down the hall, at the top of the stairs, Athena is excitedly introducing Sasha to Trucy, and re-introducing Sasha and Apollo. Taka is long gone. And Edgeworth stands next to Phoenix, arms folded, drumming his fingers, and Phoenix can’t tell if he’s angry or begrudgingly impressed or wholeheartedly impressed. “So when Blackquill came to you to tell you that he was going to prosecute an orca, did you regret lengthening his leash at that point?”
Edgeworth shakes his head. “Prosecutor Blackquill was with me at the time. We were discussing - a case.” If it was Blackquill’s case specifically, Phoenix thinks he would have said that, but this just sounds like there’s even more, other cases, behind the scenes, above the security clearance of absolutely anyone. “And then I have a call from Detective Fulbright that he has a case that may be able to go to trial, and Prosecutor Blackquill is of course interested in that.” He shakes his head a second time. “If you think Blackquill is a thorn in your side in court, believe me, he is just as much of one to be outside of it.”
“That sounds consistent with what I’ve seen.” Phoenix glances around again to be sure that the hawk isn’t anywhere around. “Wait, you met with him - at your office? One-on-one? Without Fulbright around?”
“Yes, I have. Several armed officers on the other side of the door, of course - Detective Gumshoe stringently insists—”
“Good,” Phoenix interrupts. He should buy Gumshoe dinner for that. Someone has to keep Edgeworth’s dumb ass in one piece. “And Blackquill knows he’d still be rotting only in prison if not for you, right? And that if he—”
Edgeworth’s pale eyes flicker sideways at Phoenix. “Your concern is appreciated and entirely unwarranted and unnecessary. Prosecutor Blackquill, assuredly, has nothing against me, unlike certain others who you spent significant one-on-one time with.”
Oh. There it is. That gulf always between them, sometimes near closed and then it yawns, and they are here and here is further apart. “Good,” Phoenix repeats, more faintly than before. “Is there anything new you can tell me about him that would help?”
“Unfortunately not. He’s very stubborn in regards to his own murder case - as I said, a thorn in my side.”
“And maybe an ache in your head and a pain in your ass, too?”
Even if Edgeworth is, maybe not mad at him, but frustrated enough with him to bring up Kristoph, Phoenix is pleased to know that he can still make him snort in amusement. “I’m in particular agreement with His Honor about your need to watch your language.”
“Just in court though, right?”
“No.” Edgeworth turns his head to fully affix a glare on him, and Phoenix wilts. “In general. I can only imagine that good things would come of you choosing to fully speak and act like the lawyer that you are.”
The lawyer that he hasn’t been for eight years. The lawyer that Edgeworth pushed him to be, again. “All else aside,” Edgeworth adds, “such as and especially the orca, and that you are an utterly ridiculous man lacking a modicum of good sense and decorum—”
“That’s a lot to throw aside.”
Edgeworth ignores him. “—I am happy to see you standing in court again. You deserve this.”
“I—?” Are you sure? Do I really? After everything I’ve done? Everything that you know I am?
“You do,” Edgeworth says. “And I look forward to seeing what you do next, so long as you do not decide that you will - try and outdo yourself in finding a more outlandish defendant.”
“Hey, if they show up at my office, who am I to turn away clients? It’s not like I’ve ever had enough work to really be choosy with it. You’d said that yourself plenty of times.”
“Though I can’t say I expected an orca to be the logical conclusion of your manner of conducting business.”
They’re an Anything Agency. This was the place they were going to end up. “Would you think better or worse of me if I tell you I didn’t know the client was an orca at first, until we got to the aquarium and Ms Buckler introduced us to said orca?”
“You went all the way out to meet the client without having asked such basic information as name or species - yes, that does sound exactly like you.” He doesn’t answer whether that’s better or worse, just makes it clear that he knows Phoenix well enough to not be surprised. The more Phoenix thinks about it, the more he’s surprised that he didn’t ever get himself into a situation like this before. Maybe it could be said that there’s a lesson here, but he thinks he’s going to deliberately not learn it. “And the fact that from that, you pulled two victories, and cleared up the truth of a guilty man who was nevertheless not guilty of murder - also, very much like you.”
“You don’t need to flatter me,” Phoenix says. “I’m already on board to help you out with whatever, remember?”
He knows it isn’t flattery - or if it is, it isn’t hollow, because Edgeworth doesn’t say anything he doesn’t mean - but he’s still locked into deflect, deflect. Edgeworth knows how much Phoenix feels he doesn’t belong here. He’s not going to address it straight-out - that’s not his style, that’s not their styles, but he knows, and he still thinks that this is exactly where Phoenix does belong.
The one word he wants to say, thanks, sticks his throat shut, but he hopes Edgeworth knows anyway.
“Hey, Boss! Hi, Mr Edgeworth!” Athena waves them over. “Boss, Sasha wants us to come back to the aquarium one last time so Orla can thank us in person, too! And we should probably pick up Pearly, right?”
Not that Pearl is limited in her movements in a way that necessitates them picking her up in a car, but if she’s still hanging around the aquarium, she’d probably be happy to see them and come back to the office with them. “Sounds like a plan,” he says. “Catch up with you later, Edgeworth.” He gives his friend a solid thwack on the shoulder.
“I can give Trucy and Mr Justice a lift back to your office, then,” Edgeworth says. Trucy beams; Apollo, terror-stricken, glances between Edgeworth and Trucy and seems to resign himself to whatever this fate is. Phoenix would like for Apollo to get to know Edgeworth better, but can’t blame him for the fear. Edgeworth’s scary even before he got the title Chief Prosecutor to cement it.
“Oh, Prosecutor Edgeworth,” Athena says. “There’s something I wanted to ask you - can I email you later?”
“Ah - of course.” Edgeworth still glances at Phoenix, raising an eyebrow, doubtlessly wondering what question she has that she isn’t going to the nearest adult in her life, the one right next to her. Probably something about cars or Europe or any of the other gaps in Phoenix’s life experience, something that she figures he’s too much of a mess to have an answer to. Maybe it’s something about Phoenix’s badge, the losing of it, that she wants to know without tipping Phoenix to the fact that she’s digging into his ugly past like this. Or maybe it’s the what the hell about Blackquill she wants to know. There are lots of questions it could be.
Phoenix shrugs back at Edgeworth. It’s sort of like they’re co-parenting another daughter. No real way around that now, and Phoenix follows her out of the courthouse as she hurtles herself down the stairs.
-
They arrive back in the orca pool room in time to catch the middle-end of a lecture Dr Crab is giving Sasha about taking her health seriously and taking it easy until her condition is fully, properly managed. She sits at the edge of the pool, patting Orla’s nose, her hair soaking wet, like she just jumped straight into the pool upon her return. “I was thinking Orla and I would put on a mini show for you when you got here,” Sasha says to Athena, “but that’s obviously not happening.”
“I’m inclined to agree with the doctor,” Phoenix says.
“He’s a vet, not a people-doctor!” Sasha protests. Jokingly? It sounds like a joke.
“And you, Miss Selkie, are as much seal as you are human.”
“Not at the same time!” She stands up, careful with her footing, no doubt thinking about the victim slipping and falling to his death. “But, really. Phoenix, Athena, I cannot ever thank you enough, and your office, and Pearl, too.” Sasha waves at Pearl, who is sitting with Rifle and the penguin chick, Sniper, over by the wall. “All of you! Thank you, thank you, for what you did for me, and Orla, and the aquarium, for everyone. You found us the truth, you got us closure - made me realize this guy isn’t so bad after all!” She elbows Dr Crab.
“Not sure I’m happy about that one.” Crab steps away from her second nudge.
“You really helped us out a ton, Pearls,” Phoenix says. “Definitely couldn’t have done this all without you.”
“Oh, it was nothing!” She starts to cover her face with her hands and decides to duck behind Rifle instead. “I’m sure you could have won without me, Mr Nick!”
He could have, yes - but not to this same end. He couldn’t have proven Rimes was trying to save Shipley in the end; he wouldn’t have had the time or patience to plaster fingerprinting powder over everything. But he’s not one to look a gift debt-forgiveness in the mouth, either, so he doesn’t point that out. Dr Crab’s eyes narrow, wondering, no doubt, how Phoenix got such a tricky, powerful faery to like him so much that she writes off all this investigation and assistance as nothing. What he had to lose to gain that. Phoenix shrugs back at him, and they watch Sasha and Athena head over to Pearl, Sasha animatedly explaining something to Athena and half holding her back from charging down Rifle.
“And thanks for spilling almost all of the aquarium’s secrets like that,” Dr Crab adds dryly.
“I’m only a little sorry,” Phoenix says. Better to be honest.
Dr Crab waves dismissively. “You said you would, and I was prepared for that. I’m almost glad I’ve got less to hide now. That writer lady, now that she’s not crusading after Orla anymore, said to me that she thinks that the aquarium’s in the right with the TORPEDO, and the law’s wrong, and she’d take up our case to advocate for its legality.” He grins, just slightly. “So we might be able to wiggle free of any serious consequences.”
“That’s—” Phoenix pauses to think over what he was about to say. “Speaking as a lawyer, I shouldn’t say that’s good, but I’m glad to hear that anyway.”
“I’m pretty good at keeping secrets, so don’t worry, I won’t go blabbing on you.” Phoenix laughs awkwardly, while Dr Crab’s face doesn’t twitch. He seems very serious. “Though, speaking of secrets, buddy, if you can keep your mouth shut when you don’t have a case hinging on it, I’ve got to tell you, there’s one thing you didn’t get quite right, back in that courtroom, and I wasn’t about to go correcting you on it.”
There’s a tanuki standing in front of Apollo, saying very similar words, and the blood left both Apollo and Athena’s faces, and if Apollo had vomited right in Filch’s face it wouldn’t have been much of a surprise. But Phoenix - Phoenix doesn’t know what he feels. Not this time. Dr Crab, unlike Filch, didn’t perjure himself willy-nilly all through this trial. If he held something back—
“Go on,” Phoenix says. His voice is strangled even to his own ears. Crab gives him a curious and suspicious once-over.
“The calendar with the meeting with Jack, seven am at the orca pool - that’s mine, yeah, and I did go to that meeting to wait for him, yeah. But.” His silence might be dramatic, or a last assessment of whether Phoenix is trustworthy, and he adds, “That meant the orca pool at Supermarine Aquarium, not here.”
“The Supermarine Aquarium?” Phoenix repeats. “That’s the dolphin therapy place, right?” Athena explained animal-assisted therapy, and that aquarium across town in particular, sometime last evening, while they compiled their last investigatory information, but Phoenix checked out mentally in the middle of it. And something about an open-ocean marine sanctuary too, for whales that had been rescued from bad conditions at other institutions but couldn’t live fully on their own in the wild. He has no idea what relevance Athena thought that had. She just likes to talk about whales. “I didn’t even know they had an orca.”
“They don’t,” Dr Crab says. “They’re just harboring her for us.” It doesn’t click right away. Crab goes on. “When I told you about how I’d fake Orla’s death if I had to - I have full confidence I’d be able to, because Jack and I already did it once. Ora’s been living there the last year - we tried to send her into the wild, but she didn’t want to leave Orla, and Orla didn’t want to leave us, and we couldn’t exactly just have an orca hanging out around in the harbor for everyone to keep running into.”
“And that’s why you and the owner were making those mysterious payments,” Phoenix says faintly. DePlume had some wild ideas about conspiracy involving that, but she couldn’t dream this up.
“Yep. Couldn’t exactly force that on the Supermarine’s budget, since she’s our orca, so we’ve been paying them for all her food and care. And orcas eat a lot.”
“I’d believe it,” Phoenix says, still thinking of someone else, someone who eats a lot and puts a serious strain on his wallet when she does.
“Since you’ve proven now that Ora was innocent all along, I figure we’ll bring her back here sooner rather than later,” Dr Crab says. “Not that I know how to budget and run an aquarium, and Sasha doesn’t, either. It’ll be a hell of a learning curve with Jack gone, but I don’t plan on going anywhere - but for now, I think it’d be better if you didn’t go saying anything about what I just told you.”
“Don’t worry,” Phoenix says. “I’ve been told I’m very good at keeping secrets.”
The bitter bend to the words would be hard to miss, but Dr Crab doesn’t move a muscle in his face. “Good. Hey, Sasha,” he calls over to her. “I’ve got my rounds to make and check in on the rest of the animals. Don’t do anything crazy as soon as I turn my back.” To Phoenix, he adds, “You seem to garner some sort of respect among young women in their early twenties, apparently, so I’m tasking you with making sure Sasha doesn’t start trying to show off.”
The average age is more like late teens, and the amount of actual “respect” he gets is up for strenuous debate. “Guess you have to be some sort of a crazy show-off to go get a job working with orcas when you’re a selkie.”
Dr Crab huffs. “Azura wasn’t like that. And I think your one in yellow is contributing to the feedback loop.”
“Athena’s got a - competitive spirit, yeah.”
“I don’t suppose I’ll be lucky enough that this is the last I see of you,” Dr Crab says. “Sasha’s keen on giving all your crew lifetime tickets, if we don’t run our place into the ground figuring out the management side.”
“I learned to run a law office on the fly,” Phoenix says. “Not really the same, but best of luck to you. And thanks for all your help, Dr Crab. I appreciate you being mostly honest.”
Dr Crab snorts, casting one glance back at Sasha and Orla, and he leaves.
Hell of a fortuitous thing, the doctor’s name. Herman Crab, marine veterinarian, weirdly cool with sea witches and selkies and fae. Phoenix doesn’t think names as given determine a trajectory in life, but the fae pick them deliberately. Courtney comes to mind. Or humans who escape the Twilight Realm and aren’t sure how they’re supposed to call themselves other than after what they are or what they do. Eldoon’s father comes to mind. (He wonders how Thalassa got her name.)
But like hell he’d ever ask. Azura‘s story was something Sasha asked, something relevant to all their questions. Case closed. Phoenix isn’t going to cast around trying to find someone with a more fucked-up story than his own. No one wins in that kind of game.
“Hey, Boss!” Athena calls. “Come feed Orla with us!” She and Pearl and Sasha take turns grabbing a fish from a bucket and tossing it to the orca. Phoenix watches her snap her jaws, full of bright white sharp teeth she doesn’t need to use because she just swallows these little fish whole. Thinks of someone else with a mouth full of teeth, not taking the time to chew. Wants to say no thanks. He could tell his girls it’s time to leave and head back to the office.
“All right, fine,” he says, and Sasha springs up with a fish ready to drop in his hands. “What do I do?”
-
Trucy is very quiet after Prosecutor Edgeworth leaves them back at the office. Apollo asks her if she’s okay and when she says “yeah” she doesn’t even manage to infuse it with her usual mask of cheer, and her fingers twitch red when she says it, her hand flitting up toward her diamond brooch and stopping. It would be easy to call her on it and she knows it, but there’s an unspoken social contract that has slowly coalesced between them all to let little things slide. Athena going quiet and staring off into space or furiously dragging legal textbooks off the shelves and paging through them; Trucy staring at the portrait of her father above the piano or at Phoenix’s desk and the bottom drawer there; Phoenix poking his head into whatever room the rest of them are gathered in if there’s a sudden silence like he’s afraid something happened, or several moments Apollo watched him studying for the Bar where he’d put his head in his hands and dig his hands through his hair about to pull it out. Apollo doesn’t know what makes Athena tick but the others he knows too well, and they let each other have breathing room.
Close to an hour later - it’s past five but Apollo doesn’t want to leave until Trucy has some company - she comes back and hops up onto Phoenix’s desk. “This is the first time Daddy’s been a lawyer since he’s been my daddy,” she says. “It’s his first trial that I’ve ever seen.” She unclips her cape from around her shoulders and tosses it into what looks like empty air, but it falls draped solidly over a wisp. “I was there for his - his last one, but he wasn’t my daddy then, and I was only paying attention to my other daddy to make a diversion for him to escape if he needed it.”
Apollo nods, silently.
“You know something, now, Apollo? I’ve been here half my life now. I’ve been Trucy Wright just a bit longer than I was Trucy Enigmar, and I’m gonna be Trucy Wright for the rest of my life and it’s only gonna be longer and longer now. And I love Daddy and I don’t want to be anywhere else but it’s…”
“Still weird?” Apollo asks. She nods. “I get that.” When he was sixteen it would’ve been about half his life away from Khura’in, except he didn’t have another loving father to ease the sting. Trucy was luckier.
“Did you ever have somewhere you stayed enough to miss it?” she asks. And then hastily she adds, “Never mind, you don’t have to talk if you don’t wanna.” He must have shown panic on his face, panic or pain, but those don’t narrow the answer to her question down. Panic and pain are responses that fit either meaning, that he spent his whole life never setting roots down to have a home, or he’ll spend the rest of his life aching for somewhere long gone. “You’re welcome to stay here forever, you know! You’re like family now!”
It’s a weird sentiment, all considered, that Apollo knows all about the Gramaryes and absolutely does not want to be a part of that, and he also knows that Phoenix is a mess masquerading as a person, and - and yet. It’s not about Apollo, and what he thinks, so much as it is something for Trucy, figuring out how to build a new family out of the ashes her old one left. The Gramaryes brought Apollo to this law office in some roundabout way, like they sent Trucy to Phoenix. Like Apollo can sometimes manage to think that if Dhurke hadn’t sent him away, he wouldn’t have been there for Clay. Or Trucy. Or anyone else.
“Um, thanks,” he says, and she beams, and though it had already been slipping away, he pushes further aside, for some other far future time, the thought of finding another law office to work at. This one case is not enough to expect he’s being pushed aside. And it would break Trucy’s heart and he doesn’t have enough friends that he can afford to do that.
“Here, come look at this,” she says, waving him over conspiratorially, the moment passed. “Daddy left this picture out on his desk. He must’ve been thinking about old times, too.”
Apollo joins her at Phoenix’s desk. “What am I looking at?”
“Uncle Larry argues a lot with Daddy and Uncle Miles about whether they look any older than they did back then,” Trucy says, holding out to him a photograph that she brought in earlier. “You can be the impartial judge!”
The three of them still wear the same colors, whenever this photo was taken. Larry shoved off behind the other two - did Apollo know that Phoenix’s flighty artist friend knew Edgeworth? - wearing an orange suit jacket thrown over what might be a t-shirt. Edgeworth, smiling, and Phoenix, with a golden badge tiny on his lapel. At least eight years ago. Then there’s a taller man in a dark green overcoat off to the right, and to the left, in front of Phoenix and Larry, a girl with long black hair and big, dark eyes, wearing robes almost identical to Pearl’s. “Who’s this?” Apollo asks.
“That’s Detective Gumshoe,” Trucy says. “He’s one of Uncle Miles’ best friends. They’ve worked together since ever. And that’s Maya, one of Daddy’s friends.”
“Is she—?”
“Yeah.” It’s easy to know the question. “I didn’t know that for a while about her, though. He didn’t say. And she didn’t come around enough for me to notice. Not like Pearly visits us.”
“No?”
Trucy shakes her head. “I met her the day I came to live with him and maybe one or two other times and then - Uncle Miles says she used to be here at the office all the time, helping Daddy with his cases and stuff.”
A fae mentor and why not a fae co-counsel too. “Maybe she got bored after he was disbarred,” Apollo suggests. That sounds fickle enough to be fae rationale.
“Pearly said they had a huge fight about him being disbarred and stopped talking so much to each other. About how he was handling it or something. I don’t know. I think Pearly said that Maya wanted to help.”
“I don’t think I’d be brave enough to give one of the - the Fair Folk, the silent treatment,” Apollo says. But he’s not sure he could brace himself well enough for the repercussions of accepting their help either, and thinking about all of those leaves him to trip and land on a euphemism for their name instead. Only some days is he brave enough to call them what they are.
“I’m not sure I would either,” Trucy admits. “But Uncle Miles talks like he and Maya got along well enough and he liked her well enough and he never sounds like he’s afraid of her when he’s always very weird about magic stuff and all of Daddy’s… everything.”
Apollo looks back down at the picture, into the face of the fae girl, her smile that looks like a human smile. “Do you think she still looks this age?” he asks. “Do the fae age like people do?” Or is their development slow the way humans growing up in their realm are?
Trucy shrugs. “Pearly seems to age the same as me, but I don’t know if she does that because she has me as a model for how people grow up, or if she actually would like that.”
There in the photo, behind the fae girl, Phoenix isn’t quite as gaunt and hollow in the face, and next to him Edgeworth isn’t wearing glasses, but though Edgeworth is smiling they both look exhausted, like they haven’t slept well in days, like they’ve been ground down to ashes. “I don’t think they look that much older,” Apollo says, tapping the picture, bringing them back to Trucy’s original question. “I mean, they look really tired there, and that’s about the same.”
“Is that what being old means?” she asks, eyes downcast, twisting her fingers together. “Perpetual tiredness?”
“Oh yeah. Once you turn twenty it’s over. It’s just wanting to constantly go back to bed.” Trucy whimpers. “Enjoy the next four years because that’s all you’ve got.”
“Nooo.”
“Oi! Apollo!” He didn’t hear the door open but there’s Athena appearing in the doorway, hollering at him. “Are you being mean to Trucy?”
“She’s always being mean to me!”
Trucy exaggerates her pout even further, fishing for sympathy, but when Phoenix follows Athena in he bursts out laughing. “Mr Nick!” Pearl scolds, and Phoenix jumps, literally jumps, away from her, avoiding her smack on the arm and knocking Athena into her desk. “You can’t be so mean to your own daughter!”
Trucy breaks into a fit of giggles. “Hey, so, Trucy, Apollo,” Athena says, hoisting herself up on her desk and dropping down behind it out of the way of Phoenix and Apollo. “Guess who’s got free lifetime admission to the shipshape aquarium now, and for friends, too!”
“Ooh, I know who you should invite.” Trucy kicks Apollo in the shin. He knows exactly the answer she has in mind.
“Vera,” he says.
“Oh you know I bet that would be fun,” Trucy says. “That’s not what I was going to say, also.”
“I know you weren’t.” He can’t really leverage himself to kick her back, so he knocks his shoulder into hers. Phoenix is giving them a weird look - not like he’s mad that Apollo is beating up on Trucy in turn. There’s nothing angry at all. Just kind of fond and kind of sad, and when he notices Apollo’s puzzled expression, his face immediately snaps back to lazy-eyed and closed off, a look Apollo’s seen less and less of in the past few months, but it’s always still there, the poker face underneath everything.
“So the answer is you and Mr Wright,” Apollo says to Athena, “because you’re the ones who defended her, right?”
“Ugh, nein, non, no, no,” Athena says. “I wouldn’t be bragging about it if you weren’t included! Sasha says everyone at the agency, and Pearly too! And whatever friends you want to bring, because I also specifically asked that too!”
Trucy kicks Apollo again. Apollo shakes his head.
“We’ll all go together sometime!” Athena says brightly. “And I was thinking, y’know, Mr Wright, I’m really glad you let me come on board here. I love working with all of you!”
“I - uh, yeah, of course.” Phoenix definitely was not prepared for that. There’s another weird look on his face, hesitation, and again he smooths it away with a bit of deliberate effort. “Glad to have you.”
“Good not to be the new kid anymore,” Apollo says with a grin, and Athena sticks her tongue out at him. “And Trucy’s probably glad to have two new kids to heckle.”
Trucy kicks him again.
-
“Really, anyone? Just - whenever I want to come back, I can bring anyone with me?”
“Of course! I don’t know when the Swashbuckler Spectacular will come back, with my health, or anything like that, but you all will be the first ones to know! And your whole office is welcome and anyone you want to bring along, I’ll hold the front row just for you! Because any friend of yours is a friend of mine, Athena.”
“I - yeah, of course. But - thanks. When this is all sorted out, for you guys here and me with - and everything, there’s someone who I always wanted to visit with and never got a chance.”
“Then c’mon! I’ll look forward to meeting them.”
“Y-yeah, heh, I - yeah.”

I’m realizing a lot of people followed me without playing AA, something I hadn’t considered when I first started this blog so heres some info for those who want to read up on Maya Fey.
But I also compiled ALOT of my HCs so if you haven’t been following me for a year there’s a lot about how I characterize Maya.
But if you have been following me for like a year or even 6 months I can’t imagine there’s a lot of new info here lol
Note: Im really ADHD and organizing my thoughts in a cohesive way is really hard for me so IDK if this is at all comprehensible. I did my best
Recap
[ important info for those who have not played AA ]
Information about her Family, Village and Traditions
The fey family has been blessed with the power to channel spirits. A power said to have been given to them due to how their ancestors were servants to the gods. The Main Families oldest daughter is the one that will head the family as the Kurain Master and lead their village. The younger siblings will become subservient to the Kurain master, a position that causes a lot of resentment. This means assassinations and uprisings aren’t entirely unheard of in their family.
In fact, most of the village is shown to be pretty uncaring towards Maya. When shes being dragged away for murder, they either watch on in disinterest or gossip among themselves. No one seems to be even a little bit upset or worried.
The only one who seems to show any kind of concern or faith in Mayas innocence is her Aunt Morgan, who raised her like a mother. This is ironic because Morgan is the one who set her up for murder. Something both Maya and Mia take as something very shocking
The Kurain Master holds quite a bit of political power as politicians all wish to have favor with her in order to gain access to her powers. In fact, even when in hiding, the previous Kurain master, Mayas mother, was kept under heavy surveillance, and files were kept on where she was and what she was doing.
The kurain village is a matriarchy, one where men are not allowed to live. Even in mariage, husbands must live separate from their wives. Because of this its stated in canon that this leads to many unhappy marriage that all end in divorce. Also, because of this rule, the men who visit for business purposes are given quite a mixed treatment. Because of the lack of men in their village, some see it as one of their few opportunities to make an impression and finally get married. Others see men and immediately assume them to be scum.
Traditionally the Kurain Master is never allowed to leave the mountain, and many of the women in the village are very sheltered. Pearly, Mayas younger cousin was raised to believe that there wasn’t even a world outside their village, and that the forest bordering it stretched on forever. Maya had to be told by her older sister about the ocean. Throughout the games there are proven to be extremely unknowledgable about very basic things. Pearly doesn’t know what a watch is. In the games Maya has no idea how to turn on a computer and in the anime she doesn’t know what the internet is.
Family History and Meeting Phoenix
Mayas mother, Misty, was tasked by the police in channeling a victim of a high profile case. In the end, the channeled victim gave the police a false lead to protect someone, which caused Misty to be branded a fake. This information was leaked to the public and soon Mayas family became a laughing stock.
Her Aunt Morgan raised Maya after her Mom disappeared and Mia left. Though this was with the ultimate goal of one day killing Maya, in order to make her own daughter the next Master.
Mia, Mayas older sister became obsessed with finding out who leaked this info and passed down the burden of Kurain Master to Maya. Years later Mia is a successful lawyer and even had an apprentice named Phoenix Wright. Then, on the day Maya and Phoenix were supposed to meet up with Mia, Mia was murdered. Maya arrived first on the scene followed by Phoenix. She was promptly accused of her murder which Phoenix got her acquitted for.
Other cases about Maya Fey
Maya is also kidnapped by an assassin in order to prompt Phoenix to defend a a killer. During this time she is starved over a period of three days to prompt Phoenix to close the case as fast as possible
When her mom finally reappears its because she has found out that there is a murder plot created by Mayas Aunt, and handed down to one of her cousins. Wanting to have the chance to save her daughter but not wanting to reveal her identity, she appears before Maya as a popular childrens author instead. In the end her mother is stabbed right before Mayas eyes, after which Maya had to hide from her killers on an isolated part of a snowy mountain.
Important Info
[ information important to how I characterize Maya ]
Her sister and how she affected her
During her sisters time in LA, due to her quick rise as a prominent lawyer, her ability to think outside of the box and her likable personality, Mia became a well known name between lawyers and police alike . Even among the police who are known to be hate defense attorneys, she was beloved.
Once she passed away, Phoenix mostly keeps Maya around due to her ability to bring back her sister.
Maya hears time and time again from those around her just how amazing her sister was. Because of this Maya feels a lot of pressure to replace her sister, feeling guilt that she could’ve easily been the one killed that day, leaving her sister to live in her place. She works tirelessly to be useful to the ones Mia left behind, most specifically Phoenix who’s debut case was defending Maya in court. She views him as a little brother who she needs to take care of.
During the final case of the first game, Maya has spent a lot of time with Phoenix and hasn’t been meditating enough. Because of this her powers start to leave her. This comes as a big hit to her. Maya has felt that she, herself, is useless and that her only real use is the fact that she can channel her sister. She goes to many lengths to try and be useful to Phoenix. At one point when Phoenix lets slip to a murderer that he has incriminating evidence, the murderer attempts to taser Phoenix, at which point Maya leaps in front of him and takes the hit. In the end Phoenix still gets tasered anyway. When she wakes up she begins to cry, stating how shes useless for being unable to protect him and even saying she wishes she never woke up. Maya has a lot of self hatred for being unable to reach the standards she feels her sister set.
Maya takes very active roles in getting Phoenix cases, to the point that there is not a single case in the trilogy that has not been sought out by Maya (not including the ones that Phoenix had a personal stake in and even some of those maya forced him into)
Morgan and how she affected her
I portray Morgan as someone who was kind of strict but someone very important to Maya. Morgan is someone who was the eldest sister but due to Misty’s, (her younger sister and Mayas mother) abundance of power, the title of Master went to her instead. This caused a lot of anger and resentment towards Misty and by extension Maya. But as she raised Maya, it wasn’t all bad. There were softer moments. Small shows of kindness that Maya latched onto as proof that her Aunt loved her. I also hc that some of the most intimate moments Maya had with her Aunt is when Morgan was teaching Maya about their history and what it meant to be Master. Maya felt bad for her Aunt because she could see how passionate Morgan was about being Master, and this got passed down to Maya. Even after her Aunt tries to get her killed, that passion still remains all the way to when she’s an adult. In fact, she still loves her Aunt desperately and tries to make excuses for her and her actions.
Also because Morgan had no plans to allow Maya to live very long she did not properly educate or prepare her for being Kurain Master. Because of this I hc that after the trilogy Maya makes a point to get an education in order to properly lead her village and also make changes to the traditions in place that have bred so much hatred and murderous intent.
I think something that people really miss about Maya is that she is actually VERY serious about her position as Kurain Master and is very much willing to concentrate and put in hard work when necessary. For goodness sake the girl spends how many hours meditating. In fact she excitedly signs up to sit on a block of ice to meditate.
I also hc that Maya was supposed to learn how to use the sword because one of the family heirlooms passed down was a sword and a statue of her ancestor is also seen with a sword. So I like to think she tries to pick this up later.
De Killer and what this case says about her
When Maya is kidnapped by the assassin Maya is able to create a way to communicate with Phoenix and give him information that allows him to find her. When the assassin moves her, she figures out a way to leave behind evidence in a way that her kidnapper wouldn’t notice but she knows her friends will. She also leaves behind a letter, comforting Phoenix and her younger cousin, and even actively encouraging him to throw his case. Ensuring him that this is what she wants and that ‘she wouldn’t forgive him’ if he saved her because she knows Phoenix wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he went against his morals as a lawyer.
This speaks heights to how self sacrificing Maya is. She is an eighteen year old girl, slowly being starved to death by an assassin and yet her first thoughts are to comfort the adult trying to save her. Yet she isn’t trying to be a martyr either. She actively tries to get herself saved too if she can. But she lets Phoenix know that if he has to choose, choose his client. Because she knows how it would effect him. In spite of everything that happens she’s still trying to take care of Phoenix.
Trust and Loyalty
During the last case of the third game, there’s a character called Godot who was in a relationship with her sister Mia. He was in a coma for several years and when he awakes he finds out Mia was killed. He blames himself for not being there to save her, so when he finds out about a murder plot against Maya he takes this as an opportunity for redemption. In the end Mayas mother is possessed by a spirit that wants to kill Maya and Godot is forced to kill Mayas mother right in front of her. Godot admits to Maya later that he honestly didn’t care much about protecting her and was acting only out of selfish need for a feeling of redemption. That if he truly wanted to protect her he would’ve just told her from the start that someone wanted to kill her instead of creating an equally secret plot to protect her. To which Maya vehemently protests against. Sayig she believed in Godot and that he is a good person who wanted to save her too. That he should give himself more credit. This is just a long set up to explain that once Maya trusts someone she is EXTREMELY loyal to them. Maya even lies in court to protect Godot.
Which goes into another point which is that, Maya is ABSOLUTELY willing to break rules, the law and lie in court. She is only a certain amount of law abiding because the two closest people to her are lawyers.
(i felt like this was a lot of explaining so you can read the explanation below or skip it and watch this video of the cut scene im describing and then get to my thoughts )
PL vs AA is a game in which, during trials, the defendants are in an iron maiden suspended several feet in the air above a pit of fire. If found guilty there are sentenced to death and are immediately plunged into it.
One of her friends, Espella, is about to be subject to a guilty sentence, and after declaring “this just isnt right” she makes a leap onto the iron maiden, gets it open and orders her to jump onto a nearby chandelier. Meanwhile guards are desperately trying to come in and recapture espella. During this confusion Maya is accidentally caught and shoved into the iron maiden and plunged into the fire.
Phoenix believes Maya has been killed for a good part of the game and Maya wakes up in a strange land unaware of how to find Phoenix again
I talk about this scene a lot but I feel like it really highlights just how brave Maya is. Because for a lot of the game you see Maya pushing Phoenix into the line of fire. If there’s a show of danger, for example when El Tigre seems like he’s about to go on a violent rampage Maya hides behind Nick.
But when it really counts Maya is more than willing to put her life on the line to save other people. Not even for just her friends, but if it just means saving the life of someone innocent.
Vulnerability in front of others
During PL vs AA, there is of course, a reunited scene between Maya and Phoenix later in the game that many fans found lackluster. Once they see each other, Maya belts out a YOOOOOOO NIIIICK before carrying on as usual. Ive seen countless people redo the scene as something more emotional- more crying more hugging. But honestly I think this was just more in character for Maya.
Maya’s always been the type to put up a strong front if she can. And later on you do get a brief scene of Maya tearing up and saying “I thought I’d never see you again” before she quickly moves on. She’s just not the type to run crying into phoenixes arms and try to bottle up those ‘sappy’ emotions unless she cant do it anymore. She’ll laugh off serious moments if physically possible.
In other scenes you can see her being very sensitive with other people and their feelings, such as when adrien andrews begins hyperventilating and shes the first one at her side telling ‘take a deep breath and just breath. it’s going to be ok’

The Great Ace Attorney Replay: Dual Destinies, Case 3, Final Part
Athena’s breakdown here get my heart everytime. It’s such a complete panic attack tinged with PTSD and the way she struggles to calm herself and how Apollo is kinda shocked and not sure what to do really gets me in the relatable feels.
Athena: (Don't tell me I've failed once again -- failed to save someone near and dear to me... I've worked so hard to become a lawyer, and even studied psychology. Has it all been for naught? Am I just doomed to relive that all over again?!) Unnghh...! A... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Apollo: A-Athena! Wh-What's wrong?!
Athena: Breathe in... Breathe out... Breathe in... (Relax, Athena, breathe...!)
(It's not working... Everything's going... dark. After all I've done, is this how it bends? Forgive me, Junie. I couldn't protect you like I said I would.)
Which makes the moment when Robin and everyone else Athena helped come to reassure her all the more uplifting. I know it’s cliche but I absolutely eat up this cheesy shit and love it to death.
Robin: YOU LEAVE ATHENA ALONE, MAAAAAAN! SHE'S THE ONE WHO SAVED MEEEEEE! It was because of Athena that I could stop hiding and start living my life as a girl again. And she saved the friendship between Hugh, Juniper, and I! I think you're an awesome lawyer, Athena. One of the best!
Gender fuckery aside, Robin is so over-the-top ridiculous and protective and has such a good heart, so I really like her. She puts 100% of her emotions into everything she does and you know characters like that are my jam. Which is why I had to grasp for a trans headcanon to fix said fuckery. NOW THAT I HAVE, her declaration here is much more meaningful.
Of course, Athena’s girlfriend is there to motivate her and believe in her too
Juniper: It's not over yet, Thena. Even now at this very moment, I still believe in you!
Athena: J-Junie...
Juniper: I know you better than most people, Thena. And I know you'd never surrender to the dark age of the law like the professor did!
Hugh, Simon and Apollo join in and Athena pulls herself together.. I just love pay it forward moments where the people someone saved come to save them and always will.
Anyway Athena TURNS THE CASE UPSIDE DOWN with her ridiculous theory and decides the best way to prove it is to imitate a statue of Phoenix Wright and make Apollo tie a tarp to her i love her.
So I’ve been doing all the wrong answers before I do the right ones and I am sure GLAD I DID BECAUSE;
Athena: Tie both my hands in an objection pose!
Apollo: You sure? What about the spiky hair on the back of his head?
Athena: Oooh! I know! The boss is right there! Go pull some out and you can glue it on!
Apollo: Okay! I’M ON IT!
Phoenix: OBJECTION! OUCH!! APOLLO, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?
Apollo: S-sorry Athena I-I...I couldn’t do it!
Athena: Tsk, don’t be such a wimp!
Judge: Awww, how unfortunate. And I was so looking forward to seeing where that was headed.
Athena: It’s all Apollo’s fault!
Can you believe that Athena not only had the idea to TEAR PHOENIX’S HAIR OUT but Apollo automatically went and tried to do it? Like he seriously went up to Phoenix in the gallery and started trying to pull out chunks of his hair. enthusiastically.
And the Judge was enraptured.
Apollo has both punched Phoenix in the face and pulled his hair at this point and that says a lot about their relationship i feel.
Also if you choose to make Apollo tie your hands behind your back, he again asks “what about the spikes”
Athena: I DON’T HAVE THIS MASSIVELY LONG HAIR FOR NOTHING! Just use some superglue to bond it in place!
Simon: SILENCE! Fool, you shall RUIN YOUR HAIR. ...lucky for you, there was no such glue residue found of the victim.
Athena: Oh...huh! When you’re right, you’re right!
Judge: Whew, you had me worried for nothing.
The fact that Athena declared the ultimate and best purpose for her years of growing her hair superlong was the abilty to superglue it into weird shapes is amazing.
Meanwhile, the fact that Simon’s protectiveness of Athena apparently extends to her hair is adorable. The fact the judge was genuinely worried for Athena’s hair- also adorable.
The fact Athena takes the “I don’t think about anything that comes out of my mouth when i’m spitballing a theory i just blurt out whatever the fuck” to an even higher level than Phoenix does is another reason to love her. example
Athena: Oh, right! There was an arrow sticking out of her side! Okay, Apollo, take that and plunge it into my side!
Apollo: Wh-What, are you crazy?!
JUST FUCKING STAB ME, APOLLO, YOU COWARD, I NEED TO SHOW THEM I’M RIGHT!
Athena: Fine, then go get some duct tape! Rapido, schnell!
Apollo: All right, all right! I don't need to know other languages to know "bossy" when I hear it.
LOOK SHE WOULDN’T NEED TO ORDER YOU AROUND IF YOU’D JUST STABBED HER AS REQUESTED.
And so Athena saves the day.
God Junies “crush” on Apollo has absolutely zero basis and is so unnecessary and is so clearly just compulsory heterosexuality fucking her up and she’s transferring her feelings for Athena onto him and placing hjim on a pedestal as a result. Literally everything she says about him applies way more to her her relationship with Athena. BUT SHE’LL GET OVER IT WITH TIME AND REALIZE HER TRUE LOVE, NO MATTER WHAT BULLSHIT THIS GAME IS TRYING TO SELL ME.
Athena closes out the case by sadly reminding us Apollo turned into an angst bucket and we have to deal with that now. This case had many problems, but I overall enjoy it, not least because my girl gets to shine and it’s just really fun. Way better to her than her case in SoJ. I mean, for one, she actually gets to fuckin’ investigate.

Okay, so the three major players in Turnabout Trump.
Apollo Justice: Actual title character who is of the least importance in this episode, sucks to be you Apollo. We learn bits and pieces of Apollo Trivia: his Chords of Steel (or rather, he is new at this whole lawyering thing and desperate to appear as confident as he wants to feel), he mentored under Kristoph – WHICH SHOULD BE A THING FOR HIS CHARACTER IN FUTURE GAMES, REMEMBER THAT TIME HE QUOTED AND PHYSICALLY IMITATED HIS EVIL MENTOR, WHY WAS THAT NEVER BROUGHT UP AGAIN - he has own Special Defence Attorney Magical Trick.
We can also gather that he had a streak of hero-worshipping towards Phoenix (“Phoenix Wright would never lie, and it’s up to me to prove it!”) which actually speaks volumes about how legendary Phoenix’s reputation must be – it’s been seven years since he lost his badge, and rookie lawyers are still looking up to him. We also learn that Apollo at least partially loses some of that respect and awe when Phoenix GIVES HIM FALSIFIED EVIDENCE – but honestly, good for the kid, I would have punched Phoenix for that as well. Nick is a good dude and I don’t doubt for a second that he was so confident in his play that he didn’t think it was that much of a risk for Apollo, but it was still a shitty thing to do. So Apollo? Not afraid to call people out on their shit.
Which goes along with how quickly he turns against his own mentor, when he realises that evidence against Kristoph is piling up real fucking fast. He clearly feels at least a little conflicted about it, but Apollo’s a lawyer after Miles’s truth-loving heart and if the truth is against Kristoph? So be it.
(which turns my thoughts into an AU where Apollo learned under Miles’ guidance. HE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPIER).
Kristoph Gavin: THE WAY THIS ASSHOLE TRIES SO FUCKING HARD TO KEEP HIS COMPOSURE, LOOK AT HIS SLIPPING TWISTED LITTLE SMILE.
I mean, who the fuck even is Kristoph Gavin? Apparent new best friend of Phoenix Wright? Goes on regular lunch and dinner dates with him? Someone Phoenix apparently trusted so much that he was the first person that he called when he needed help? And they’re close enough that they can take very deliberate and personal jabs at each other?
WHO ARE YOU, KRISTOPH. HOW ARE YOU THE FIRST PERSON PHOENIX CALLED INSTEAD OF MILES.
I honestly can’t remember how Kristoph and Phoenix meet – from what I remember, it’s against Klavier that Phoenix loses his badge, so they’re clearly in the same circles at that point. I’ll talk about it more below, but Phoenix very clearly disconnected from the lawyer world after that incident, but he kept up his relationship with Kristoph, of all people?
SO MANY QUESTIONS AND CAPCOM WILL NEVER ANSWER THEM FOR ME.
Also, let us never forget that Kristoph’s inner rage and anger is so fucking violent that he can develop temporary telekinesis:
Truly amazing.
And finally Phoenix Wright: Where the fuck do I even begin.
So we learn in the first episode that a) Phoenix lost his badge in case that went terribly wrong seven years ago b) Phoenix has ‘put the past behind on him’ and is a professional poker player c) has a daughter d) is real fucking chummy with Kristoph and e) is apparently completely comfortable with giving his defence attorney false evidence and putting their career at risk.
THAT’S A LOT TO ABSORB.
I’ve already gone over Phoenix’ apparent friendship with Kristoph, and I won’t get too much into the losing of his badge, as the game goes more into that later.
I’m still conflicted on Phoenix’s play re: the bloodied Ace card because it does seem just a tad too much of a dick and jaded move for his character.
It’s just that little bit much of a stretch of his character so the story can go SEE LOOK HOW CYNICAL HE’S BECOME IN THESE SEVEN YEARS, THIS ISN’T THE PHOENIX YOU KNOW (even though he…goes back to being The Phoenix We Know in the next fucking game and the AJ edge to him because Capcom hates this game, and pretends it doesn’t exist), and I’ll never be 100% sold on it. And Apollo was right to punch him for it.
And like I said above, I think you can argue that he was so confident in this particular play that he didn’t think he was really risking Apollo’s career, but still. I’m not saying he’s not capable of it, but just that little over the Asshole Line for me to sold on it.
The other thing that really gets me is how alone Phoenix is now. Phoenix is on trial for murder, and Miles and Maya are absolutely fucking nowhere to be seen or heard. I’ve ranted on this before so I won’t get too into it, but there’s basically two ways I see this:
a) Phoenix was so sure that everything was going to be fine that he told Miles and Maya that all is well, don’t worry about it, he’ll be done with the court case in the time it takes Miles to iron his cravat.
b) When Phoenix talks about ‘leaving his past behind’, he meant it, and Miles and Maya are part of his old life, and not part of his new life.
And I tend to lean towards B because a) I admit it, I love me some angst and b) there really is nothing from his old life that Phoenix has brought into his new. His iconic outfit is gone, his friends are gone, his career is gone. This absolutely YMMV territory and if you think that Nick’s relationship with Maya and Miles is fine and dandy and they’re just off doing something else – all good, there’s nothing in canon that’s going to contradict either of us.
But. You can maybe talk me into Maya really not being able to leave her temple for training, but her keeping up email/letter correspondence with Nick and him choosing to leave out the shitty parts of his life to her, but at this stage I am fully convinced that Phoenix and Miles have broken up and are not on speaking terms, and Phoenix made a deliberate choice to keep the man he loves out of his life.
(“Because no one wants to see the Chief Prosecutor dating a lowly professional poker player, right Miles?”)

(The following letter responses are from the Co-Mod.)
(Previous Letter)
Dear Infinity Sparks,
It’s been fixed, and you can feel free to tell either of us about any errors you spot. Whichever one of us sees it first can fix them.
That might become a possibility somewhere down the road (and I’d sure love for it to work out that way), but for now, we’re taking turns answering letters individually.
And as far as I know, the only real purpose for the tags is to clarify if a letter is meant for a moderator rather than a character, so it really doesn’t matter which one(s) you choose. You can just use the “to mod” tag for letters to all three of us, if you prefer.
Dear supercykes,
Yes, but only for sprites in the courtroom and in her waitress outfit. If others exist, we haven’t found them, so we’ll have to stick to the Mod’s gifs for when she’s speaking directly to the player.
(Previous Letter)
Dear Annoying Anon,
Technically, Phoenix already saw her in the outfit, so it’s not entirely private. Besides, who ever heard of privacy on the internet?
(Previous Letter)
Dear Roadhog360,
I put the translation in a tag for that letter -- that’s what it was, not a comment I was making. Sorry if that was confusing.
Dear C Ranked Gouken,
Thanks for your concern, but I’m not too worried. We have some good lawyers here if we ever need them.
Dear John,
I glanced through the inbox, but I didn’t run into any of your letters. It could be that the Mod removed them, that we just haven’t reached them yet, or that Tumblr botched them up (the latter being the most likely). You can try resending them if you still want them to be answered.
Also, while I’m at it, I apologize for Mod letters taking so long to be answered. We’ll try to answer them at least once a week if it’s possible, in keeping with the Mod’s methods.
Dear naitomeruu,
I haven’t read any Ace Attorney fanfics, so you’ll have to fill me in there. In any case, we’ll most likely keep our identities a secret for the time being, but I will say this much -- one of us is from the U.S. and the other is from Canada. How cool is that?
The Modthorne has gone by that nickname since I’ve known her (referring to her favorite Ace Attorney character), and I sort of came up with my nickname on the spot. Sorry if they weren’t what you expected, but that’s life.
(Previous Letter)
Dear Inferno,
Thanks! I can’t take all the credit for it, though. The submitter practically asked for Dhurke’s catchphrase in the way they wrote the letter. In fact, I don’t think I would’ve seen the joke there if I hadn’t recently read a similar letter while scrolling through the inbox. Thank goodness great minds think alike.
Dear FernandoLemon,
Heh heh! Thanks! I’m a big fan of double meanings, and I thought that was a pretty cool movie too. I’m super glad that our writing styles are working to make the characters “sound” the way they should, and I’m also glad they’re hard to tell apart. Here’s one thing you can know for sure – I won’t be answering my own letters. I mean, that would just be weird.
And yeah, we have our disagreements about some of the characters (Dahlia especially), but we’re both big fans of the series, which is all that matters to me.
As of right now, there are 17 letters in the queue (and I’m about to add some more), but the inbox has a total of 2,421 unanswered letters. It’s both daunting and exciting to see such a high number in the inbox.
Dear SC,
(Yay, I’m doing good!)
Thank you for the feedback. I actually hadn’t ranked the games before, so it was mostly off the top of my head. I graded each one mainly by how much it affected or impressed me. While they all contain meaningful stories and fun gameplay, there are only a few that really immersed me in the plot and made me feel like it was really happening. (Dual Destinies even made me drop my jaw at one point!) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Apollo Justice were enjoyable, but they didn’t quite “grab” me in the same way. Not to mention, the first game contained a lot more foul language and innuendo, which just aren’t my thing.
The most underrated characters in my opinion would be Maggey Byrde, Adrian Andrews, Iris, Rhoda Teneiro, Lauren Paups, and Apollo Justice. Sure, they’re not always the best people, but you can’t fault them for not caring, can you?
And I’m going to guess you were joking about Iris, but in case you weren’t, I was referring to her sister. Iris is awesome.

Title: Stars Aligned. Words: 1407 Summary: Whenever they were finally happy, someone would have to swoop in and play the hero. Years of back and forth. Years of waiting, and missing, and wanting. But never letting it happen. Warnings: Spoilers for the first game. Also spoilers for the second game. Also mentions of death and suicidal ideals, but nothing very graphic, if you squint it’s there. Let me know if I missed anything. Notes: And my gift for @tevinterwench for the @aalgbtgiftexchange is done!! The prompt was a little vague so I hope this was okay, I tried to make it like, resolved in the end. Anyways, I hope you have a good holiday!! Also on AO3!
They’ve wanted to be together for years but the timing was never right. Whenever they were finally happy, someone would have to swoop in and play the hero. Years of back and forth. Years of waiting, and missing, and wanting. But never letting it happen. —
There was the class trial. Miles Edgeworth swooping in to save the day. Phoenix could feel the anxiety creeping in as the pointing went on. The way they laughed at him. Patronizing him. Blaming him for the things he didn’t do. Then finally, the safety. The sense of belonging. The belief that he wasn’t alone. Miles Edgeworth. Phoenix could feel it. The lingering thoughts, the way they weren’t alone anymore. Warmth and comfort as their arms wrapped around each other. The way he felt safe, and the way he wanted to be there, forever. Endless nights spent as their sleepovers shifted from Steel Samurai marathons to heartfelt conversations. Who they wanted to be, their aspirations in life, the way Miles Edgeworth wanted to be just like his father. He always thought it was amazing how sure of himself Miles always was. They felt safe, and warm, and nothing could change that. The longer they spent together, the closer they grew. The people around them watched, noticing how the “you’re my best friend” shifted into “I love you.” Watching as the hugs turned into kisses and the sleepovers turned into dates. Miles Edgeworth was Phoenix Wright’s kindergarten boyfriend, the love of his life. Then he was gone. — There were the letters. Miles’s mailbox overflowing from the words of support. Wondering if he was safe, and happy. Worried if he’s been eating. Worried about the nightmares. Upset with the way he didn’t even get to say goodbye. “Dear Miles, I have a girlfriend. She doesn’t kiss as well as you do, but she’s kind and beautiful. And she makes me feel loved. She gave me a necklace and now she wants it back. I love her almost as much as I miss you. Please tell me you’re okay. I haven’t seen you around, but I know you’re working on becoming a lawyer. I know that’s a lot of work. I’m proud of you. P.W.” “Dear Miles, My girlfriend tried to kill me. She legitimately and honestly wanted to poison me. When did love become so violent? I miss you. P.W.” “Dear Miles, I’m completely and utterly alone. I’m scared. Please, come back. I don’t know what to do. “Wright.” But he never responded. — There were the endless years of law school. He was interning with Mia Fey. Sure, there was the constant stress, but he didn’t mind always scrubbing the toilets. Plus there were the stories about her time in law school, the way her and her roommate dated for a while before she ran off to become the chief prosecutor and never saw her again. Funny how alike they were. She mentioned her sister a lot too, he wondered if he would ever get to meet her. If she would like him. He graduated law school and his first trial came and went, Larry Butz was declared innocent. Then he saw him, Miles Edgeworth in the distance, winning another trial. Phoenix Wright ran, he chased him down. His kindergarten boyfriend, the love of his life. But then he was gone. And so was she. — There was the trial for Mia Fey’s murder. The thoughts never ended. His mentor was dead, his only friend in this world, and now he was here. It felt like a dream, a very surreal dream and he was going to wake up soon. But he never did. He finally met Mia’s sister, it was in a cold, dark office, and the scent of blood lingered. But he was going to save her, he had to, for the sake of Mia. He saved her, but had to turn around and save himself. Miles Edgeworth wasn’t going to swoop in and save him this time. He was living this. He had to do this on his own. He was face to face in court with Miles Edgeworth. And he won. Then Miles Edgeworth was gone again. — Then there was the charges for the murder on Christmas Eve. “Miles Edgeworth charged for murder.” The news headline shook him to the core every single time. It wasn’t the way Phoenix Wright wanted to spend his Christmas. Watching as Miles Edgeworth avoided eye contact and stayed silent. The cold air lingering awkwardly between the two, Maya glaring at Nick, as if a cue for him to say something, anything, to the convicted prosecutor. “Why have you come?” Miles asks, his voice cold, back to the man he had once loved back in their childhood. Phoenix offered to be Mile’s attorney, it was his turn to play the hero. Miles laughed, his eyes shifting down from Phoenix’s eyes to the ground and back. Miles Edgeworth wanted Phoenix Wright to leave, never come back. Never show his face to him again. “You know if I don’t defend you no one will.” He said it simply, thinking back to Detective Gumshoe’s words. “Get out.” So Phoenix did. — Then there was the trial itself. Finger pointing, the blame. So much blame. The flashbacks to that night, gunshots filling the air, earthquakes. Him. The images flashing of him dying over and over again. The blame. No matter how hard he tried, he could never turn the blame away from himself. His father’s death was his fault, and this trial was his punishment. The nightmares couldn’t change what he’d done, that night in the elevator was his fault. The gun flying through the air, the sound ringing out, echoing in the emptiness over and over again. The scream. The scream that shook him to his very core for as long as he could remember, waking him up time and time again as the nights shifted from peaceful slumber to panic attacks that he had to stay quiet to control in the dark, cold loneliness of the night. Even if he wasn’t guilty of this murder on the lake, this is what he deserved. His punishment for what he’d done so long ago. Not if Phoenix Wright could help it. He’d never lost a single trial, all three of them ended up with a not guilty verdict, When the odds are against him, he ended up rising from the ashes and bluffing his way to victory. That’s because all of his clients were innocent – and despite Edgeworth's’ protests, he was innocent too. Even if Miles Edgeworth wanted to play the martyr Phoenix wouldn’t let him It was his turn to play the hero, just like Edgeworth did back in the class trial. Manfred von Karma was proven guilty of murder. Miles Edgeworth chooses death. Then he was gone again. — There was the loneliness. The endless phone calls to his office. The sound of the voicemail recording echoing the empty office over and over again, leaving the rotting feeling that caused Phoenix’s heart to sink into his stomach. As soon as they had the chance to reunite, he was gone again. Just like he did when they were kids. — There was Edgeworth’s recovery. He always thought he saw him in passing, silvery hair reflecting off gourd lake, or his red suit flashing through the subway windows, but it was never him. No matter how hard he hoped it was. Then he was there, almost miraculously. Just when Phoenix had given up hope, he was back. His first guilty verdict, a convicted actor, the comfort of Miles Edgeworth in his arms again. And this time he wasn’t letting him go. — There was the loss of his badge. The fake diary page, the way the betrayal still stung weeks later. Sometimes when magicians vanish, they leave something behind. But Trucy, happy, smiling, was the light in that darkness. Even when he was lost and alone, she was his guiding force. And when Edgeworth finally swooped in and got to play the hero this time, paying bills, watering Charley, showing him he wasn’t alone. Edgeworth kept the office up and running, kept Phoenix alive, and even if Phoenix denied it, he was thankful for the help. The support. Even if they weren’t alone together as a family, they weren’t alone.
The stars had aligned, neither of them were leaving again.
Even if Edgeworth had to play the hero over and over again.

The Latest: Russian on IOC disagrees with spirit of ruling
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea /February 9, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — The Latest on the Pyeongchang Olympics (all times local):
5:05 p.m.
A Russian member of the International Olympic Committee concedes the Court of Arbitration for Sport was legally correct in excluding 45 Russian athletes, but he disagrees with the spirit of the ruling.
Shamil Tarpishchev says that since the Russian team was formally banned, the court was correct that the IOC had the right to choose which Russians to invite to the games.
He says the IOC could have simply not invited anyone at all.
Tarpishchev was the tennis coach of Russian President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s. He sees Russian athletes as unjustly targeted over doping cases and says, “We are fighting for the truth.”
He declined to comment when asked if Russia planned to take the cases to civil courts.

4:50 p.m.
Russian officials have criticized a last-minute ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that will prevent 45 excluded Russian athletes and two coaches from competing in the Pyeongchang Olympics.
The athletes had appealed after the International Olympic Committee didn’t invite them because of doping concerns. There is a 168-person delegation from Russia, but they must compete in neutral uniforms. If they win medals, the Olympic flag will be raised and the Olympic anthem played.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko tells the Interfax news agency that Moscow was not surprised by the ruling, saying that “it was hard for the CAS to deliver a ruling with all of that pressure.”
Mutko says the IOC’s practices for deciding who goes to the games lack transparency.
“You get a feeling that it’s someone’s private party, and there are lots of criteria for admissions.”
Russian Sports Minister Pavel Kolobkov described the CAS ruling as “unfair” and says Russian lawyers are going to look into it.

Olympic halfpipe champion Iouri Podladtchikov looks like he’s going to get a shot at defending the title he captured in Sochi four years ago.
The Russian native who competes for Switzerland posted pictures on Instagram on Friday of him practicing on the halfpipe at Phoenix Snow Park.
Less than two weeks earlier, he was involved in a scary crash at the Winter X Games that left him with a broken nose.
Podladtchikov’s face slammed hard into the halfpipe during the finals in Aspen, Colorado, on Jan. 28 as he was landing a trick.
He was led away on a stretcher. He was admitted to the hospital, but scans for brain and neck injuries came back negative.
Halfpipe training started Friday. The qualifying round is set for next Tuesday.

Team USA says 19-year-old American ski jumper Casey Larson has become the 100,000th man to compete at the Olympics.
Historian Bill Mallon calculated that Larson reached the milestone by being the 16th starter in Thursday’s qualifying at the Pyeongchang Olympics.
Larson called the milestone “pretty cool.” He says he can add it to his Olympic checklist.
Larson was one of four athletes from the United States to qualify for Saturday’s normal hill final. Kevin Bickner, Michael Glasder and Will Rhoads also qualified.
Mallon conducted extensive research into who would become the 100,000th male athlete to compete since the modern games began in Athens in 1896.

Count on the Dutch Olympic short-track speedskating team being on the ice for some last-day training while the glories of opening ceremonies are ongoing.
The team spokesman says the coach gave them a choice and they all decided to train.
Athletes who compete the day after the long opening ceremony mostly sidestep it to avoid interrupting their preparation.
In this case, all of the Dutch short trackers, staff included, stuck together and decided to focus on training.

3 p.m.
The sister of the North Korean leader has arrived in South Korea for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
Kim Yo Jong is the first member of her family to visit South Korea since the 1950-53 Korean War. She’s part of a high-level delegation attending the opening ceremony.
She smiled brightly as she was greeted by South Korean officials led by Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon at a meeting room at Incheon International Airport.
She was joined by other members of North Korea’s delegation, including Kim Yong Nam, the country’s 90-year-old nominal head of state; Choe Hwi, chairman of the country’s National Sports Guidance Committee; and Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the North’s agency that deals with inter-Korean affairs.
Analysts say the North’s decision to send Kim Yo Jong to the Olympics shows an ambition to break out from diplomatic isolation and pressure by improving relations with the South, which it could use as a bridge for approaching the United States.

2:40 p.m.
Christof Innerhofer of Italy has led the second downhill training session on a windy day and on a shortened course.
Innerhofer was a silver medalist in the downhill at the Sochi Games. On Friday, he finished in a time of 1 minute, 18.97 seconds after race officials delayed the start about 30 minutes because of the conditions.
Kjetil Jansrud of Norway was runner-up for a second straight training day, just 0.01 seconds behind Innerhofer. Beat Feuz of Switzerland had the third-fastest time.
Innerhofer says the wind gusts were so strong that he felt like they blew him down the hill. Jansrud says it’s hard to read much into this training session given the strong wind.
The men’s Olympic downhill is scheduled for Sunday, when more strong wind is in the forecast.

Despite holding a lead heading into the final round of curling’s mixed doubles match, the U.S. lost to reigning world champion Switzerland after the Swiss managed something exceedingly unusual: a perfect score known as a six-ender.
How rare is a six-ender?
Think of it as a perfect game in baseball.
Although Switzerland was behind by one point entering the final round, Jenny Perret and Martin Rios had an advantage: the right to throw the final stone of the game. They managed to get their first five stones into the house. They then promptly knocked the Americans’ lone rock out of the house.
According to the World Curling Federation, no curling team has ever managed a perfect score at the Olympics.

2 p.m.
The chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee says there will be no American bid for the 2026 Winter Games but that the committee will keep its options open for 2030.
Larry Probst says the financial logistics of hosting the Winter Olympics two years before Los Angeles hosts the Summer Games in 2028 are too complex.
There is a possibility the IOC could award 2026 and 2030 together. Probst says the USOC is prepared to be part of the process if so.
Earlier this week, Salt Lake City said it would try to become the American candidate for a 2030 bid. Denver is also considering a bid.

1:45 p.m.
Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford made up for teammate Patrick Chan’s shaky short program to give Team Canada the lead after the opening day of figure skating’s team competition.
The U.S. team was second, followed closely by Japan and the Olympic Athletes of Russia.
Duhamel and Radford scored 76.57 points in their program to finish behind Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, whose season-best 80.92 points dazzled a crowd full of Russian fans. But not even that big number could make up for teammate Mikhail Kolyada’s poor short program.
Nathan Chen was wobbly for the Americans, but the pairs team of Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim bailed him out with a dazzling performance set to music from “Moulin Rouge!”
The team competition resumes Sunday with the ice dance and ladies short programs.
___
1:40 p.m.
Russian athletes at the Pyeongchang Olympics must wear neutral uniforms and compete under the Olympic flag, but their fans are making no secret of what country they’re from.
A large contingent is holding up signs saying “Russia In My Heart” in Russian during the figure skating team event. The same message is spelled out in their shirts in English.
Russian skater Mikhail Kolyada struggled in the men’s team short program, falling twice on quad jumps as he finished eighth.
The International Olympic Committee invited 168 athletes to compete, but they’re being called “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” If they win events, the Olympic flag will fly and the Olympic anthem will be played.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that another 45 athletes and two coaches excluded over doping concerns can’t compete.
___
1:10 p.m.
IOC president Thomas Bach has run his leg of the torch relay, receiving the Olympic flame from a local teenager who he invited to the opening ceremony later in the day.
Dressed in the official uniform and a thick winter coat, Bach tried to keep warm as he took selfies and exchanged pins with visitors as waited for the flame near the official IOC hotel.
After running in a short distance in light snow, he handed the flame to the President of the U.N. General Assembly Miroslav Lacjak. Bach says “It’s a great emotion. I have carried the flame seven times but it is always like the first time. This is a great emotion because the torch is a symbol of peace and tolerance.”
Bach predicted an “excellent Olympic Games,” saying “I wish these Games to be remembered as a great festival on a human scale.”
___
1 p.m.
The lawyer for Russian doping whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov has renewed a call for IOC president Thomas Bach to resign.
After the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected appeals from 45 excluded Russian athletes seeking to compete in Pyeongchang, Rodchenkov’s lawyer Jim Walden says “for the sake of the Olympic ideal, (Bach) needs to resign.”
Walden has accused the IOC and CAS of being “complicit in enabling Russian doping” for not implementing strong punishments for Russian athletes, including a blanket ban.
Friday’s verdict, he says, is “a small semblance of justice for clean athletes.”
Despite the 45 appeals being rejected, 168 Russians are due to compete in Pyeongchang as IOC-approved “Olympic Athletes from Russia” in neutral uniforms under the Olympic flag.
___
11:50 a.m.
One U.S. athlete says she’s pleased to hear 45 Russians who were excluded from the Pyeongchang Olympics over doping concerns won’t be allowed to compete. Others say the drama has been a distraction.
U.S. skeleton veteran John Daly calls the saga that has dogged the Olympic movement for the past four years “absolutely ridiculous.” He says the Russians should not be allowed in and that what’s going on now is like something out of a movie.
U.S. women’s skeleton athlete Katie Uhlaender finished fourth in the Sochi Olympics, one spot behind bronze medalist Elena Nikitina of Russia, who was one of the 45 appealing to get into Pyeongchang. She says it’s great news that the Russians lost their appeals.
Nikitina, who was confident of winning her appeal, now will not race in Pyeongchang and possibly never again in an Olympics.
___
11:40 a.m.
Shoma Uno skated a near-flawless short program, the only stumble coming on his opening jump, and scored 103.25 points to give Japan the lead in figure skating’s team competition.
Alexei Bychenko put together a clean program to place Israel in a surprising second place, while the rest of the big hitters in the men’s competition kept hitting the ice.
Patrick Chan of gold medal-favorite Canada fell on both of his quads but rallied in the back half of his program to take third. Nathan Chen of the U.S. was fourth after doubling a triple toeloop and quad toeloop and falling on his troublesome triple axel.
The event continues later Friday with the pairs short program.
___
11:30 a.m.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that 45 Russian athletes who were excluded from the Pyeongchang Olympics over doping concerns can’t compete.
They and two coaches wanted the court to overturn the International Olympic Committee’s decision not to invite them to the games, which open Friday.
The games will still include 168 Russians who have been invited as “Olympic Athletes from Russia,” competing in neutral uniforms under the Olympic flag.
___
10:45 a.m.
Figure skating at the Pyeongchang Olympics is underway with the team competition, where 10 nations will send out men’s and pairs short programs at Gangneung Ice Arena.
Canada and the Olympic Athletes from Russia are considered the favorites for gold, with the U.S. a strong contender to land on the podium. Nathan Chen and his array of quads will skate the short program for the Americans while Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim tackle the pairs program.
Teams are awarded points based on their finish in each discipline. The dance and ladies short programs are Sunday, when the field is trimmed to five nations. Each will then field a free skate program for each discipline, with medals decided Monday.
___
10:40 a.m.
The highly politicized Pyeongchang Olympics are officially opening, but not without some last-minute drama as the Court of Arbitration for Sport is set to announce whether 45 excluded Russian athletes can compete.
The Russians had not received invites to the games from the International Olympic Committee, which said it couldn’t be sure they weren’t involved in Russian doping scandals.
Another 168 Russians have been invited as “Olympic Athletes from Russia,” competing in neutral uniforms under the Olympic flag.
The opening ceremony is Friday night, and figure skating training and qualifying competition in events including women’s moguls were underway in the morning.

The Appointment Ends. Now the Patient Is Listening.
Paula Span, NY Times, Aug. 18, 2017
The next time you see your cardiologist or internist, what would happen if you took out your smartphone or a digital recorder and said you’d like to record your appointment?
The doctor might be startled, might bridle, might have visions of a supposedly confidential discussion showing up on YouTube--or in a malpractice lawyer’s files.
Or the doctor might think more like Dr. James Ryan, a family practitioner in Ludington, Mich.
With his patients’ approval, Dr. Ryan routinely records appointments, then uploads the audio to a secure web platform so that patients can listen whenever they need to recall what they discussed with him. They can give family members access to the recordings as well.
Sheri Piper, who has seen Dr. Ryan almost monthly for a host of medical problems--gout, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, anxiety and depression--has come to rely on this system.
“As aging continues, it’s harder to not be overwhelmed by what you hear in a doctor’s office,” said Ms. Piper, 63, a retired administrative assistant.
An extended round of hospitalizations and operations in 2013 affected her memory, she said, so “you can tell me something today and I won’t remember tomorrow.”
Thus, last month, straining to recall what Dr. Ryan had said about how often to take allopurinol for gout, she turned to the recording (annotated so that patients can easily locate specific topics of conversation) for clarification.
When she changed blood pressure meds, she asked her daughter, who lives nearby, to listen to Dr. Ryan describe side effects to watch for.
“At some point, it will become a normal thing, recording these encounters,” Dr. Ryan said--though given physician resistance, he thinks that might take 20 years.
But it’s not a crazy idea, especially for older patients. Like Ms. Piper, they typically contend with several health conditions, so they visit more doctors more often and take more drugs.
They may also have hearing loss, and research shows that they struggle more than younger patients to recall information from doctors’ visits.
“There’s more to remember and difficult words to decipher and interpret,” said Dr. Glyn Elwyn, a researcher at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and lead author of a recent JAMA editorial on patient recordings.
Often, when older patients want to tell a faraway relative what a doctor said, “they struggle and fail because complex language was used and they don’t have a record,” Dr. Elwyn added.
But in most states, the editorial points out, they could have one. Under wiretapping or eavesdropping laws, 11 states require that all parties consent.
In those states (California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington), you’d need the physician’s O.K. to hit “record.”
But in 39 states and the District of Columbia, the law requires just one party’s consent. Nor does the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the federal law protecting health information privacy, forbid recording by patients, who are not “covered entities.”
In these jurisdictions, physicians who are uneasy about recording can either swallow hard and agree, or terminate your visit (some legal experts argue that they can’t do that, either). But if you’re the patient, you can legally proceed.
And you might find that useful. A review of 33 studies of recorded visits concluded that most patients listened to their recordings, shared them with caregivers and reported being better able to retain and understand information.
You could record sneakily, as already happens now that recorders--a.k.a. cellphones--sit in so many pockets and purses. In a survey of 128 patients in Britain, Dr. Elwyn and other researchers found that 15 percent acknowledged surreptitiously recording a visit.
But he doesn’t like the idea. “It fundamentally disturbs the relationship,” he said, undermining trust between doctor and patient.
Better, he thinks, to make recording an open practice, while cautioning patients to be thoughtful about how they use the results (and pointing out that they can hit “pause” at any point, should there be issues they don’t care to share with anyone).
Physicians’ fears about recordings finding their way into lawsuits aren’t completely unfounded. In Britain, Dr. Elwyn said, some recordings have been admitted as evidence in court cases. Here, “it’s untested,” he said.
But in 2015, a Virginia jury ordered an anesthesiologist and her practice to pay $500,000 to a patient who sued after he inadvertently recorded the medical team’s insults while he was sedated and undergoing a colonoscopy.
Still, several practices and institutions already record patient visits--the Dartmouth institute is studying their approaches and results--and report few problems.
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston buys recorders and batteries in bulk, offering them to patients at cancer clinics. About 300 new cancer patients a year agree to use them, said Dr. Meredith Masel, director of the Oliver Center for Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare, which started the program in 2009 and will soon expand it to internal medicine and geriatrics.
At the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Dr. Randall Porter, a neurosurgeon, prefers video. He uses plastic models of the brain and spine during office visits and shows patients (half of them over age 60, he estimates) their M.R.I. scans.
With their consent, he records the session on an iPad, then offers them the video to watch later on a web platform he founded called Medical Memory. They can choose to make the video accessible to family or friends, as well.
Without recordings, “patients forget 80 percent of what we say by the time they hit the parking lot,” Dr. Porter said. He understands why that might be: He’s often talking about cutting open their skulls, an emotionally laden subject.
Far from heightening litigation risks, Dr. Porter said, use of the system has actually cut the institute’s malpractice insurance costs in half. Since 2015, more than 400 doctors have signed on to use Medical Memory, recording 28,000 visits.
When patients agree--or bring a recorder and initiate the process themselves--”it’s not because they’re trying to catch us,” Dr. Porter said. “It’s because they’re desperate to remember everything we tell them.”

Young Tuesday at 7:38 AM / Originally published on North American Fisherman NAF Editor Gayne C. Young former Texas Ranger All Star Pitcher Jim Kern about baseball, fishing, and hunting! How did your baseball career start? I was from Michigan. Played high school baseball. Signed after high school when I was 18. I never was drafted or got a college offer for a scholarship. I could throw the ball through a cement block wall, I just couldnt hit it with any consistency. Back then I got credit for a no-hitter when I didnt hit anyone! Spent seven years in the minor leagues scaring the hell out of hitters while learning how to hit the wall kinda sort of consistently Give us the highlights of your career. I was in the playoffs with the Chicago White Sox in 1982 (you might want to leave this off as I game fishing tips destroyed my elbow the 2nd game of the season and did not play at all that yr.) I played in the major leagues from 1974-1986 for six teams including Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies. In 1977 and 1978 with Cleveland I was selected to the American League All Star Team as well as 1979 when I was with the Rangers I won the Rolaids Award as the best relief pitcher in the American league going 13 & 5 with 29 saves, sporting a 1.57 ERA and striking out 139 in 71 appearances. So, you were a great pitcher. How were you at bat? I couldnt hit a pig in the ass with a canoe paddle! I was so bad that in 1982 while playing at Cincinnati, I fouled a ball back to the screen behind home plate and MY team mates including Johnnie Bench, Tom Seaver, Caesar Cedeno and Davey Conception walked to the top of the steps of the dugout and gave me a standing ovation! Baseball cards, action figures, any of that? They put 18 baseball cards out during my 13 years in the bigs. Got my Huckleberry Finn card and several others that will scare the cockroaches out of the closet. Back in that time frame I had hair on my shoulders and three, four inches of beard. Intimidation was the name of the game as a relief pitcher. I could throw the ball in the upper 90s consistently. I was inherently wild & was given the nickname of the Amazing Emu (the worlds largest non-flying bird) by my teammates in 1976. At at 65 and 185 lbs I looked like Icobod Crane standing on the mound yelling at yourself to get the ball over the plate I looked the part. My idea was that the talent in the major leagues was so close that having the best 800 baseball players in the world on a given year, confidence played a big part in ones success on the field. And if you could erode somebodys confidence just a little, it gave you a huge edge. The beard, the hair, the acting crazy was the modus operani and being a one trip pony with a 98 mph fastball and inherent lack of control making 3 All Star Game appearances.I would say it worked! So did you always enjoy fishing? My earliest memory, when I was 3 my mom tells me, is my dad putting me on his shoulders and carrying me out one of these artificial piers in Lake Michigan and tying me to the pier with a rope around my waist and then around one of the bulkheads on the pier and fishing all day and then him carrying me back in the evening. From the time I was nine, if he went hunting or fishing, dad asked me if I wanted to go. It was a huge part of my life, always has been, always will be! So when you were in baseball, did you ever think, after this I want to go into fishing? My wife has always said I played baseball simply to finance my hunting and fishing. But when I was playing baseball I really never had considered being an outfitter. I had been on a number of guided hunts. Liked the concept, liked the idea. I destroyed an elbow in 1983 & modeled uniforms (I didnt get many people out after 1983), I didnt really retire in 1986, I simply ran out of teams. So what did you do after that in 1986? In 1986, I didnt do much. In 1987, I started an outfitting business named The Emu Outfitting Co, running Texas hunting leases. I did a little bit of booking for Rainbow Bay Resort in Alaska as well. How did that lead you to the Amazon? I took Bobby Witt and Roger Pavlick, Texas Ranger pitchers down to Peacock Bass fish in Brazils Amazon with Amazon Tours in 1997 and then managed the American office for Amazon Tours from 1998 2003. From there I managed a fishing and hunting lodge on Lake Iliamna in southwest Alaska for 4 years while still running Emu Outfitting . Then in 2010 I was hired by the Brazilian Peacock Bass fishing company Captain Peacock to created and run an American booking office for them. I did this until the end of 2013 when I had a difference of opinion on how the business should be run and I quit and went back and managed the lodge in Alaska for 2 year during an ownership change. Then in 2015 River Plate Outfitters in Brazils Amazon offered me the opportunity to design an upscale floating camp for them and market and handle all the bookings for it. This really interested me as with the huge interest we had developed in Peacock Bass fishing since 1997, the fishing pressure created by an onslaught of mother boats on the main Rio Negro River had gotten intense.

And for a few precious weeks each season, they run Idaho rivers and give anglers the chance to catch the fish of a lifetime or go crazy trying. For Meridian fisherman Cody Ard, salmon fishing is more than a hobby, or even an obsession its a way of life. He grew up in a household where the annual calendar revolved around Chinook fishing. Its hard, and you lose a lot of fish, Ard said. Its that love-hate relationship, but once you finally catch one, its over. Its a lifelong addiction. Depending on the time of year, Chinook can be found in the Snake, Salmon and Clearwater river systems. They are stocked occasionally in the Boise River. No matter where you fish for them, Chinook are tough customers. They will hit a variety of baits and lures, but since they arent interested in feeding, the key is to trigger an aggression strike. The Bonneville Dam near Portland is the last blockage of the Columbia River before it reaches the Pacific Ocean. Every year, salmon make their way through the dam's fish ladders en route to Idaho, where they spawn.
