Looking out the door for something to see

I like to feel the life seep back into me

The moon, the moss, the trees

The tires that are lost in the sea

of woods surrounding the house

I like to keep an eye out for even a wild mouse

I love when the deer and the hawks let themselves be shown

I love when I see the smallest pine cones

When the leaves start to change their color,

when the deer frolic with their mother

Living in the middle of trees

was something that was definitely meant for me.

I'm tempted to say that I'm not a poetry fan, but that wouldn't be entirely true. What I'm not a fan of is SERIOUS poetry. Adult poetry. Ponderous poetry. What I loooove is what poetry becomes in the hands of some with a silly sensibility, a way with words, and an audience of kids. Alice Schertle's "Button Up!: Wrinkled Rhymes" (2009) is a lesser-known but wonderful example of this. 👟👟👟 A book of clever, funny poems about clothing, written from the clothes' point of view, and illustrated in charming detail by Petra Mathers, this is a fun exploration of familiar objects from new perspectives. I love poetry for short storytimes and for prompting conversation with young kids.
