The Orpheus Myth is Sapphic
Of course Portriat of a Lady on Fire is an explicitly sapphic retelling of the myth
And Hadestown is sapphic because I too, would travel to hell and back for Eva Noblezada

2015 - 20x20cm
painting by the artist that worked on portrait of a lady on fire. this painting was made before the film’s release but I always thought it was amazingly similar to likeness of Oliver and Elio.

The other day, we watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire with a friend who can speak French.
Today I'm watching Lilo and Stitch: The Series with my wife, who has seen so much Lilo and Stitch that she's translating the things Stitch says, having learned from context and repeated phrases.
Everyone around me is smarter than me. Send help.

The POALOF vs Ammonite discourse is incredibly stupid. Hey two period pieces about lesbians can exist.
Me personally I am excited for Ammonite. I loved POALOF. And you know what I am going to let myself be excited to watch Saoirse Ronan kiss Kate Winslet.
Also what stuff are you seeing, because on the audience level I am just seeing a bunch of queer women getting excited for more period lesbians.
And of course it’s marketed similarly, it’s called targeting your audience.
#also in terms of awards#POALAF was a non-English film#that by its nature gives it a higher bar just in temrs of accessibility#indon’t know why does this have to be a thing

I hate that there are so many fetishization of lesbian relationships in film that are mainly made my men, through a very male gaze. Blue is the warmest color is one of them and I do not get why he made these 2 actresses engage in a 10 minute sex scene when it doesn’t propel the plot forward at all? And you can totally tell the difference between a film that prioritizes representation and female gaze, not trying to fall into a male gaze, such as portrait of a lady on fire. Lol and the fact that film critics rated BITWC so much higher and praised it bc of the “passion” meanwhile POALOF was called “boring” and “not sexy enough” is so infuriating. POALOF had nude scenes but they were carefully constructed so it doesn’t fall into what the first film did and it didn’t get the recognition it deserved at all. I guess another thing is also i’ve been hugely mad that a lot of straight people were saying that Bly Manor didn’t have deep character development & bad romance (?) which lol like.. ok we get it just bc it doesn’t revolve around straight people doesn’t mean u get to degrade a wholeass lesbian centric series that carefully brought in a lesbian writer so there is good representation. Man, there’s so many things wrong with the film industry.
Wait that’s so surprising to me that there were complaints about POALAF not being sexy enough cuz i thought the lack of male-gaze-y explicit fucking made it a million times hotter than straight up sex would have been?!?! Like all the LONGING GAZES and LINGERING TOUCHES i was losing my mind when I watched that movie!! I’ve never seen blue is the warmest color and am likely to keep it that way LMAO but yes agree with u completely

“A moment like that doesn’t exist because when I decide something, I’m already doing it.”
-Adèle Haenel
This is Adele’s response when asked by a director during an audition, “Try to remember a moment in your life where you made a radical decision.”
It’s such a simple but poignant response. It blurs the separation between decision and action. That is to say, fear and doubts are set aside in favour of doing exactly what you want, what you already know you want to do. We spend so much time contemplating our decisions and for what? Delay things in fear of repercussions, in fear of making the wrong choice. Repress yourself because it seems easier. All that does is delay progress, delay growth. Life can only take so much setbacks before it runs out of time.
