“A moment like that doesn’t exist because when I decide something, I’m already doing it.”
-Adèle Haenel
This is Adele’s response when asked by a director during an audition, “Try to remember a moment in your life where you made a radical decision.”
It’s such a simple but poignant response. It blurs the separation between decision and action. That is to say, fear and doubts are set aside in favour of doing exactly what you want, what you already know you want to do. We spend so much time contemplating our decisions and for what? Delay things in fear of repercussions, in fear of making the wrong choice. Repress yourself because it seems easier. All that does is delay progress, delay growth. Life can only take so much setbacks before it runs out of time.

The spectral figure of Heloise in a wedding dress foreshadows the end of their time together.

Marianne’s memory of their love is haunted by the last time their eyes met.
“If you look at me, who do i look at?”
“Turn around”
The ghosts in our memories remind us that they have passed.

What is your method when working?
Adele: I read a lot to learn. Right now, I'm reading a book on prehistory. I am continuing my reading of Proust. I took a long time to dare, then I got into it.For me, it is an indescribable revelation and enrichment in the way of understanding my characters. The descriptions of emotions are fine and sharp, we move away from lazy storytelling we’ve been used to seeing. Literature allows the dissection of emotions and the preparation of roles. In the body, there are joints that are no longer used and they rust. It's a bit the same with acting. If we have got into the habit of reacting in a certain way in front of a situation, we always reproduce this same method of acting due to ease. Reading, for an actor, is like going to the physiotherapist to strengthen the areas that have not been utilized for a long time, opening up to all possibilities.

Interview with Adèle Haenel
Tumblr media
Here’s my translation:
Celine Sciamma’s film offers three possibilities. Either you don’t accept the world you were born into and you jump off a cliff like what my sister in the film did. Or you endure it, like the painter, you dry out(harden). Or you live your life with what you’re given - which is what my character did. I build my freedom the same way i build a character and i don’t reveal anything about me. No one would ever know who I am, and for me, this decision is an ACT OF RESISTANCE.
