In P4, Kanji talks about his "animal crackers", which in Japanese was a real snack called Ototo.

When Persona 4 Golden was re-released on Steam in 2020, Atlus/Sega had seemingly lost the rights or partnership to call Ototo by its actual name.

When Kanji catches Yosuke eating his Ototo, Yosuke now calls it, "Suisui Snack", and the line is also unvoiced as they just removed the audio instead of having the voice actors re-record. Since the Ototo snacks are supposed to be sea and marine-themed (ototo is like... a childish way of saying fish, yeah let's go with that), I assume the "don't sue us" name, Suisui, is from 水 which can be read sui or mizu and means water.

Unrelatedly but also relatedly, another name that had to be changed as a result is Potelong as that was also a real snack. It was localized as Tater Longs. The "don't sue us" name for that one in the 2020 Steam release was Furaimo Potato. Since Potelong look like french fries, I assume that's a combo of fried foods (furai) and the JP word for potato (imo), plus just the eng word potato lol. Fried potato potato.

The localization for these didn't change, so they're still animal crackers and Tater Longs in the 2020+ English game.

Meanwhile, other real products like Ribbon Citron and Ribbon Napolin (Eng: TaP Soda and Orange Smash) and Homerun Bars (Eng: Topsicles) still keep their real names in the 2020+ versions of the game, and you can even see their manufacturers (Pokka and Kyodo Milk) in the credits still.

thoughts on yosunao / shiromura shipping?

I actually rather like the ship! It's one of my favourite ships in p4 tbh- I feel like it's got so much potential. Yosuke and Naoto are probably the brightest members of the Investigation Team up with Yu, and I think they might disagree with each other at first but would come to a comprehensive understanding of the other.

Plus, Naoto's more strong-willed and high-strung, while Yosuke is very laid back and easygoing (on the surface). They'd balance each other out. Naoto would probably be able to appreciate Yosuke's intelligence, while also probably making fun of his grades (while helping him study). Yosuke would probably also tease Naoto back, while being aware of when to back off (later on... I think that it would take a few incidents of Naoto secretly getting offended before Yosuke realized he needed to read Naoto's cues a bit better).

And they both have the prince title! And wind spells! It'd be hilarious in canon for Yosuke to start dating Naoto- one of the most popular people at Yasogami dating the one of the most hated. The Investigation Team would definitely ask what Naoto sees in him.

I also love Souyo and Kannao and Naorise, but Shiromura is such a rare pairing and I can't get enough of it. I'm actually writing a fake dating fic for them rn- if anyone wants to ask about it ;D

While I could have gone without all the mocking jeers from the audience, I honestly really loved the dresses that the boys wore during the cross-dressing competition in Persona 4 Golden (minus Yosuke’s, but that’s just because the homophobic jackass sucks at EVERYTHING).

Kanji really rocks the white dress and makeup (plus the way he nonchalantly says, “‘Sup,” legitimately made me chuckle), Teddie looks exactly like Alice from Alice in Wonderland (as soon as I saw Teddie’s dress I immediately quoted the White Rabbit’s iconic line: “I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date!”), and Yu’s dress has a neat Victorian goth aesthetic to it! Plus you get to keep them as alternate costumes!

yosuke has his cringefail jerk sad pathetic sopping wet cardboard box moments but he's a competent witch!! but sometimes he feels like yu could find someone so much more better than a witch who's a much bigger pushover than he'd like to admit

or hey, maybe yu can even become a witch himself. hell, he's already chummy with the townsfolk, his brewing is immaculate and kids don't run away thinking he's gonna eat them or turn them into frogs.

but then yu is just like nahhh i really like being a shapeshifter. plus don't put yourself down i love you just the way you are. also i'll have a Talk with the parents of the town, they do not have a right to use you as something to scare their kids into behaving.

most of the time yu really likes being a cat. or a bird, because y'know flying is actually really fun and useful for gathering ingredience (🤤) for his witch boyfriend/husband. sometimes he's a dog or a lizard. maybe a little fish. he has his own big tank filled with a lot of things a fish would ever want. a fish bed maybe.

one time he asked yosuke if he would still love him if he was a worm and promptly changed into one right after yosuke said yes. he got a worm bed right after that i think.

Hell maybe like one day on yu's birthday yosuke manages to brew up a shapeshifting potion and yu is just like !!! and then they spend the entire day as animals. they cross their tails as cats and form a heart. At night yu shifts into a human while yosuke shifts into something cute and furry for yu to cuddle as repayment for all the times yu has cuddled him as something very snuggable.

It's one of Yu's best birthdays ever.

soejima describing yosuke as 'having a limited imagination' took me out too lmao, i like to think thats the description of yosuke being introduced. after his shadow/by his interactions with the investigation team he starts to think more outside the box. 'limited imagination' but hes soujis voice of reason... 'limited imagination' but he can keep up with naotos theories... 'limited imagination' but hes good at artistic endeavors like guitar, getting everyone to agree with him for the group cafe, dancing, etc. really the only thing he doesnt do is draw lol

I suppose it also kind of checks out with Yosuke's self perception as not being an imaginative person when he said he wasn't good at arts/humanities subjects but did well in STEM subjects? But his dancing?? And his music?? His interest in fashion?? :') I do love the idea of him branching out more after the IT though, like just being exposed to more perspectives beyond his own.

Plus, when he says at the end of p4au that he just wants to see more of the world and experience new things? Perfect actually!!

New au idea: persona 4 but Inaba is quite literally, basically Night Vale with all it's oddities

instead of a radio station Inaba has a TV Station (the only other channel is the midnight channel).

Yu is sent to Inaba after his mom could find literally no one else to take him in for the year. so she called up her brother and sent yu to her hometown hoping desperately that the year there would not turn him weird.

He took the the weirdness of the town like a fish to water.

Yosuke becomes friends with Yu because he knows about the outside world and also takes the title of new guy from him. (He has been here for over a year(? Time is weird in Inaba)) Sometimes he gets possessed by the Junes to work there in the night.

Chie became friends with Yu cause she was part of the Summer reading program in the last year, and is determined to protect "the new guy" from the Librarians. Plus she's already friends with Yosuke and he's friends with Yu. So might as well.

The amagi inn is open though they are only taking ghost customers at this time. miss Yamano is too busy enjoying the inn's hot springs to answer Dojima's question on if she was murdered or just really desperate to get a reservation at the inn.

Kanji's dolls may or may not be alive. we know they are there and they move when we aren't looking. but they also don't breathe and that seems very important to life

Teddie, does not legally exist. Cause everyone knows that there is no such thing as bears.

Rise, as a native to Inaba, is naturally weird. Even before her idol career, she was quite famous for being the first person in Inaba to open their 5th eye. Which comes with the side effect of occasionally floating in the air and giving hyper-specific prophecies to random people. It's much more dramatic in Inaba than elsewhere.

(Also this is an au where Yu is romantic partners with both Yosuke and Rise. Polyamory ftw)

Naoto is not having too much of a fun time in Inaba. She came in to investigate some murders, and he came out with a realization of his funky gender, friends, government mandated eldritch entity (which is probably a persona), and a broken worldview of what she had previously thought was possible.

Dojima is part of the Sheriff's Known Police. And by part of I mean one of two members (the other is Adachi). the Sheriff's known police are also the only ones (not including the IT) that are investigating the murders/ kidnappings. And not because people are dying, but because the killer/kidnapper didn't submit the proper paperwork.

Nanako still gets letters from her mom even if she still can't really meet her. Not because Nanako's mom is dead. No, it's because Nanako's Mom is an Angel, which of course don't exist. (Though Dojima is looking for concrete evidence to submit to the city council that they do)

Everyone knows about izanami's presence. she isn't a threat. however he is a notorious pronoun thief and citizens will often wake up and find that she has stolen [REDACTED] pronouns in the night. they'll give them back the next night by taping the pronouns to the victim's door. someone else can steal the pronouns at that point though. Izanami is a menace.

Igor, or as he's better known, the weird old guy who lives in the blue door we all know is there even if we can't see it, is wanted by the Sheriff's secret police for illegal entity dealing. the sheriff's secret police are only thwarted by the fact that they cannot see the door and thus cannot find the knob to open it.

Junes is basically Strexcorp. either buying or running out local competition. Junes is also the final boss of p4 in this au, as again Izanami is simply a menace.

Yu and Marie both take over the role of TV presenter by the end of the year. They switch out depending upon if one of them's busy. This allows Yu to leave Inaba if he wants to. The previous presenter most likely died during Junes' temporary take over of Inaba.

Also the TV station has a cat. About 9 of it actually. 9 of the exact same cat. Yu and Rise take one of the copies with them when they have to leave as all the versions of the station cat are connected and part of a hivemind and a very effective method of communication into Inaba.

Persona 3, 4, & 5 Protag sexuality headcanons

Disclaimer: I am not going to include the first three Persona games as I have no way to play and figure them out, but maybe I'll find a way.

Another disclaimer: I sadly won't include the FeMC, as I haven't played P3 Portable. But I got it recently, and I shall repost once I finish!

Makoto Yuki:

HeteroAce. I know it seems like a cop-out, but I think it fits him well. He probably never thought about romance and didn't think he would ever fall in love. Then he meets the girl of his dreams (me and my fiancé say Fuuka) and he finally understands.

Another idea is AroAce, it's more an idea.

Yu Narukami:

Polysexual and possibly Polyamorus. Persona protags are lady killers, but it doesn't mean that they can't also be different. Narukami is no exception. He gives off Polysexual vibes. You have many female options, so there's one. Yosuke was supposed to be a romance option (we were robbed!!), so already makes sense. And I headcanon Naoto being Non-binary or Genderfluid, so check on that! As for the Polyamory, depending on who you romance, you could be a throuple (We imagine Narukami, Naoto, and Kanji. It would be sweet).

Akira Kurusu:

Pansexual. I know we have many female options, but four of them are adults. And I know Japan is different, but its still strange. But that's a rant for later! And let me say we all know that if we had male options, people would have Ryuji and Yusuke as their partner. Plus, Akira seems like he doesn't discriminate (like I said, he dates adults), and he values their emotions and love.

These are just headcanons, so if you don't agree, that's perfectly fine! Everyone has an opinion, and they can be beautiful (not all and you know who you are 🫵😡)

The investigation team's sexualities (plus a bonus)

Woot woot, I think this completes the set! Now, every persona game (except for 1, I know nothing of that game lol) has a collection of what I think their sexualities are. Which, are they strict? Not really, they’re just for fun, and easy for me to do to scratch the urge to write without blowing all my energy before the upcoming kinktober! So, just enjoy, and if you’ve got any questions, pls just be respectful when asking. These are all just based on vibes I get from the anime mostly, and the animes aren’t the besssst for thorough canonicity.

Yu Narukami

While Yu is not my personal favorite persona protagonist, meaning I don’t chew on him like I do Tatsuya, or even Akira. So, his vibes are a bit hard for me to choose. On one hand, he vibes pretty strongly as evenly bisexual. Men and women equally could get it. But, on the other hand, I also get the vibe that he’s potentially under the asexual or maybe aromantic umbrella? Bisexual aromantic maybe? I have no really strong opinions on which fits more lol.

Yukiko Amagi

Yukiko gives me pretty strong lesbian energy, or female-leaning bisexual maybe? Bi-curious at a minimum. Sadly though, I don’t have a strong enough opinion to really know for surebetween those. I just know that she undeniably likes women to some extent.

Chie Satonaka

Unlike Yukiko, I don’t need to think much more on what Chie’s into. She vibes verystrongly as a lesbian. Maybe somewhat unaware at the start, but also somewhat aware at the same time. Like, maybe she just doesn’t want to admit that she knows it isn’t super duper straight to want her female friends attention and to be relied on and seen as her knight. She’s just a bit too embarrassed to really act upon that knowledge.

Kanji Tatsumi

The clear answer would to say Kanji’s simply gay. That’s sort of what the running joke is in the game, and it is hard to argue that he’s heterosexual. However, I don’t think he’s just. Gay. I think Kanji’s bi or pansexual. Women, men, neither, it doesn’t super matter to Kanji, it all confuses him on his feelings of things. Which, sadly, only makes the questioning worse and lengthens the time it’ll take for him to really pinpoint what he is and come to grips with that.

Naoto Shirogane

We are going to avoid the whole controversy around Naoto. I’ll just say that I doubt they’re heterosexual, but I can’t really say what they might be. Which, I feel is pretty fitting for Naoto. They’ve got too much going on with gender identity issues and questions to really focus on what they like in someone else. If they like you, they like you. If they don’t, they don’t.

Yosuke Hanamura

I could joke and say Yosuke’s an in-denial homosexual, but I could also take Bisexual too, since he was into Saki Konishi at the start, and I think he’s just, very very gay for Narukami. Some part of me thinks he’s so strongly into Yu, that he’s almost comphet, and his homophobic quips are some form of denial. But if I’m just looking at the vibes alone, no jokes, I think Yosuke’s bisexual and just has an unacknowledged preference for men. Specifically men named Yu Narukami.

Sho Minazuki

Gender does not matter to this man. If you can fight him and give him a fun fight in the process, you can get it. Homie is violence-sexual lol. Simple as that.

Teddie

Teddie’s a slightly weird one. Not only because he’s not human, but because he’s just. Kind of giving me weird vibes in terms of sexuality. He seems to simply mimic what others do, and since he’s roomed with Yosuke, he’s taken on a perverted act to try and fit in. He just seems more into fitting in with his friends and clinging to any form of identity he can find than any form of actual sex. So, if I had to guess what sexuality Teddie might be, I’d say he’s asexual with some biromantic or panromantic on the side. But, uh. He needs some therapy before anything.

Rise Kujikawa

Rise gives me such strong heterosexual vibes. Like, she vibes like she’s a straight girl, but she enjoys when girls crush on her, and likes to poke at any form of crush a girl might have on her. Like, she’d kiss a girl in spin the bottle, or to teach a girl to kiss, but she wouldn’t actually sleep with a girl. Maybe she’s just questioning a bit of her own sexuality, or maybe she’s more fluid than she lets on, but I personally think she’s heterosexual.
