hey fam, welcome to the April 2024 roundup of the best hannigram fics i've read this past month! i read over 100 fics total, and these were the cream of the crop.

as a reminder: the ingredients for a five star rating typically (but not always!!) include some combination of a.) believable characterizations of both Hannibal and Will, b.) compelling plot and/or character arcs, and c.) high quality smut.

that being said, my judgment of the aforementioned ingredients is powered almost exclusively by vibes and as such, is incredibly subjective.

Word Count: 84,596 Summary: When things don’t go according to plan, Hannibal makes a wish. He finds himself a year-and-a-half in the past and seemingly given another chance with Will. His feelings about the situation only get more complicated when he realizes he may not have completely lost access to his old timeline after all. A Digestivo canon divergence.

If you follow me, you probably saw me already raving about this fic. This was so fucking good, holy fucking shit. And also heartbreaking. Made me think a lot about the nature of reality and what does it mean for something to be "real." Plus, I really love fics that explore their shared mind palace because I genuinely think that is one of the more underexplored aspects of their relationship. Definitely heavy on the angst, but there is a happy ending!

Word Count: 82,427 Summary: Hannibal solves the mystery of time travel and he and Will decide to go into the past and take opportunities previously missed along with rewriting the regrets they each hold. Changing the past does not effect the future and they have free reign to play as the please.

GIVE ME MORE THAN FIVE STARS PLEASE. I am obsessed with this fic. I've mostly stayed clear of time travel fics (aside from, you know, the one right above this) because the execution can be hit or miss, but let me fucking tell you. This was a god damn home run. There's a little bit of angst, but then there's also a chapter where Will challenges Hannibal that he wouldn't have been able to seduce him while Will was still working in Louisiana fixing boat motors. And obviously Hannibal decides to take that challenge.

Railroad Romance by OneWhoSitsWithTurtles

Word Count: 12,400 Summary: Hannibal is still Hannibal, and Will is still Will. Except Will is not part of the FBI and they meet on a two day train trip from New Orleans to Baltimore.

Dirty. Talk. In. FRENCH. Holy shit. Okay this was excellent. EXCELLENT. Perfect characterizations, and wonderful dialogue. Wow. Also, I love trains. Who doesn't love trains?

Word Count: 130,185 Summary: If Will and Hannibal hadn't gone into their respective careers, they would have become porn stars.

I had my doubts about a pornstar AU, but I've really enjoyed everything else by this author and it was over 100k, so I gave it a shot! And WOW. The characterizations of both Will and Hannibal were spot on and believable. A good mix of fluff and angst, and the author clearly put a lot of thought into the porn scenes. Tbh I'm probably going to reread this shortly.

Word Count: 33,369 Summary: It’s not like Hannibal didn’t know that Will was hiding something. It was after the third body drop a week ago that it became clear that Will had a secret that somehow involved the case, one he wasn’t willing to share yet, not even with Hannibal. At 6:43 AM, Will had texted Hannibal that a fourth body had been found and that he was on his way to the scene with Jack. At 8:06 PM, Will had stepped into Hannibal’s office, thirty-six minutes past his appointment time, and practically shouted “I used to be a stripper!” as loudly as his hoarse voice would allow him to. Hannibal Lecter, though not phased by much in life, has never been entirely able to predict Will Graham, but this is just… getting out of control. Alternatively, the FBI is hunting a serial killer targeting male strippers, and Will decides to throw himself into the fray. Hannibal is beyond pleased.

An AU where Will was a stripper in college and now he's working a case where he can be live bait as a stripper? Shut the fuck up. Mostly told from Hannibal's perspective, and it's just *chefs kiss*. Who knew Will giving Hannibal a lap dance would be so HOT. (I could have guessed.)

Lessons In Submission by wyldefire

Word Count: 5,173 Summary: Hannibal was stubborn, independent, and Will had always loved that about him, but there were times, times like these, in the midst of heat, in the midst of such a thorough breeding, when lessons in submission were necessary.

My only thought at the end of this was, "Shut the whole fuck up" in the best way possible. Smut. Just all smut.

I LOVE a good season 1 AU and this was checking all of the boxes for me! There's a secret relationship, Hannibal actually gets Will treated for his encephalitis, Will finds out about Hannibal, etc. Very much loved the plot, and the characterizations were spot on.

You want dark!Will mixed in with some incredibly jealous and possessive Hannigram? Hooo boy do I have a fic for you! The ending was a little abrupt, but it was the perfect mix of gut-wrenching angst and toxicity + smoking hot smut. I genuinely had to stop and focus on my breathing more than once.

This was such a fun read – I love the implication that hannigram fanfiction exists and it's all there for Will to accidentally discover. I adore this author and just thoroughly enjoyed how Will learned a thing or two about himself by reading smutty fics (same dude).

I adored this fic and I loved how both Will and Hannibal were characterized and the plot and the smut (oh my god, the smut) and the ending? Phew. Go read this.

THIS WAS TENDER. Fluffy, angsty, smutty, I loved it. Molly showed up with Will's dogs and decided she wasn't going to turn them in, which was a little weird, but I really loved this fic. Just them learning how to be with each other. Also EXCELLENT marathon smut scenes. Like yesssss, of course they can each cum like three times in a row.

Word Count: 25,466 Summary: When Will Graham storms into Hannibal's house muttering about kissing Alana Bloom, the good doctor makes Will an offer: Pretend to date Hannibal in order to prove to Alana that Will is not only stable but capable of being in a relationship. Welp, I wasn't going to post today...but then I realized that the final chapter of Heart in the Well will go up before Sunday, and that'll render the excerpt I carefully picked out obsolete by then. So I scrambled to pick bits from my other stories just so I could post this one excerpt. Go me!

The good news about Heart being done? I've got a new WIP plotted out that I'm super excited about, but I wouldn't let myself write anything until one of my WIPs finished. So next week or the week after, you should see the first words from that fic, a very very angsty Watford era canon divergence.

I shake my head now, thinking about it. I’ll just have to keep close to Simon, or at least, as close as he’ll allow me. At least my vampire anatomy gives me an advantage there; I can listen to what’s happening with Simon from three rooms away (I won’t, unless it’s a matter of his safety. It’s a gross invasion of his privacy otherwise) (fortunately, I had to learn to tune out the chatter of my peers by my 2nd year at Watford, or I would have gone mad). 

From the Heart in the Well

He looks back at me and then frowns. “Well, come on then,” he says, impatiently. 

“Come on, what?” I say, exasperated. The water’s up to my breastbone now, and I’m starting to feel a little panicky, so my voice comes out higher pitched than I’d like. 

Now, he rolls his eyes. “I need your tie,” he says as if it were obvious. It was not obvious. “Take it off, please.” At that, I shiver a little. I never thought there’d be a day where Simon Snow would be telling me to take off my clothes.

That’s my fault, of course. It could have been different, all those years ago, when we first met at Watford Uni. I was excited, back then, to meet my roommate. Excited, and nervous. I freely admit I’ve had a privileged upbringing, and this would be the first time I’d ever shared a room. 

My childhood was mostly lonely, so I didn’t mind the idea. I’d thought it’d be nice to always have someone nearby to talk to.

Liam's meets Pez's at a party at the brownstone, and he almost can't believe it when Pez makes a move on him. An eccentric philanthropist with deep pockets and a shy IT guy still hung up on Austin – can it possibly work? This canon divergence wasn't even on my radar, but I was hooked from the get-go! Honestly, the idea of them together just made so much sense in my head as I read the author's notes, and then reading these two stories – chef's kiss. Like so good!! 😙👌

Liam's thoughtfulness and Pez's surprising moments of quietness shine through in both fics, brimming with feelings, hilarity, and a whole lot of smut (it's Pez, what did you expect?) – just iconic. And just for reference, their ship name is 'Southern Philanthropy' - don't you forget. 🤠💑🏳️‍🌈

1) This is quite inventive considering that Reiner's (and Ymir's?) initial plan for CoT to kidnap Historia anyway. But this leaves her in a compromised position as prisoner of war in Marley where she could be easily executed (I prefer Zeke to be like this lol). Plus at that point, Historia has never had her government arc — at that point in the story she's feeling like an empty shell (killing her dad has quite reformed her). Also, i don't think there would be any chance for Zeke and Historia to hit it off since Historia obvi hates Zeke and to him she's just a brat who got tagged along because Reiner has a crush on her — [my irl thought process about to ensue] — but then again, Zeke is vaguely aware that Historia ~might~ be valuable since she appears to have connections to some Reiss family (I believe at that time Zeke could only learn that Reiss were a noble house crucial to the government but nothing more). Most likely that Zeke would be more concerned about finding Eren of whose existence he learned from Reibert, and mostly ignore Historia during the first weeks the warriors spent preparing for RTS.

I haven't read the royal uprising arc in quite a while but Historia's presence wasn't really crucial to the overthrowing of the government - Erwin just did it on his own volition and additionally found out that the Reisses are the real ruling family of Paradis. At this point I'm not sure if they would make Rod the King since his presence in politics was always prominent throughout but let's assume he will so naturally the question of an heir would arise. Since Historia was carries away before she had a chance to reveal her true identity, the Survey Corps would have no idea of her royal heritage unless Rod tells them. But, admittedly, it would be hard to make the missing girl the official heir so I guess they would just leave it there. (god, i'll hope Rod would die soon to create a power vaccum for Historia to fill)

I don't want to think how Zeke found out about Historia's royal blood. He wouldn't be interested to build connections with someone who is not somehow an extension of himself (like Eren is). But maybe the matter of Historia's identity was pressed soon enough since Marleyans weren't pleased with keeping a low-rank scout instead of simply getting rid of her. Maybe it was Ymir who relayed the info about Historia to Zeke in an attempt to make her life seem valuable and thus protected, or maybe Zeke found this out by himself by raiding the nearby villages and learning of the recent coronation of some Reiss and connecting the dots. Only then would Zeke feel the tendency to guard Historia from the Marleyans, but not out of deep attachment to someone of his bloodline, but because she suddenly became an important political bargaining tool in his eyes.

Eren was still something more important than anything else to Zeke yet he lacked power or influence in Paradis to arrange a meeting with him. And it seemed that Historia would be his key to Eren (much like Sansa in asoiaf). At this point Zeke would force Historia into a position of no choice but to accept his plan. In the Marleyan camp, Zeke is the only one to stand between her and the execution so she's highly reliant on him to live, and it's not that Marleyans would be willing to let her go, not after she came to learn some intel on Marley - he has her life in his hands.

In exchange for her help establishing contact with Eren and sending a note to him, Zeke would help Historia escape the ship and thus give Paradis its Queen. Additionally, Zeke's anti-Marleyan volunteers would provide communications between the Island and the outside world should Paradis ever want to lift the iron curtain. To seal the deal — but mostly to give himself some sort of power as an outsider — they marry. (much to Reiner's chagrin, most possibly) (Atp I'm not sure if Zeke would be psycho enough to make her consume his spinal fluid to always have that leash of influence over Historia, idk)

The warriors would still lose in RTS, but that wouldn't faze Zeke too much since he's already dug his claws in the probability of future contact with Paradis idk idk

...

I quite like this canon divergence but it leaves Historia a submissive husk of a person character that is constantly compromised (at least in my rendition) since the royal uprising arc is where she gets a massive growth that is not present in this case. So the Jikuhisu dynamic is suffering greatly cuz Historia isn't able to give any pushback on Zeke's delulu.

And also there's the matter of their canonical ages which is *eugh*

2) That is something that originally came to my mind, yes. I guess it involves less dark stuff because Historia can fight for herself in this scenario. But also, in this case, the whole reason behind the marriage happening would be Zeke scheming too much and driving himself into a matrimony neither of them wanted. This way, it's more hilarious and makes the blonde man suffer more from the consequences of his own actions. They would spend the days trying to outwit each other into oblivion, with Zeke trying to see Eren and Historia reining him in yet simultaneously demanding a more high quality help from anti-marleyan volunteers in terms of modernizing Paradise or something like that — fruitless months, just like how Zeke spent them in the canon, but instead of a forest he's in a royal quarters and instead of Levi chaperoning him it's the Queen.

Yet additionally, the lack of things to do and the prior knowledge of their blood relation might compel Zeke to deign to inquire more about Historia, with initial intent to get into her head and find out the best way to sway her. But I guess their similar upbringing and trauma made Zeke realize that she has a lot of common with him. As I posited somewhere before, Zeke tends to like people who resemble him the most and this discovery must've positively predisposed him to Historia (let's be fucked up together vibes).

I'm not sure about their dynamic from Historia's side, though. From what I understand, the Queenship weighed heavily on her. Despite the opportunities her position offered, she lamented her inability to keep her promise to Ymir. Her marriage to Zeke for the sake of Paradis was yet another nail in the coffin of her hope for personal freedom, making her grieve her fate even more. Thus the initial hostility that Historia might have showcased, lying through her teeth to get Paradis better perks. But, as they came to get to know each other more, the more Historia recognized her past self in Zeke. Considering the similarities in their upbringing, with them desperately striving for their parents' love, they both got the "dead inside". Only Historia managed to find her self-worth (plus Frieda was a huge pillar of emotional support) whereas Zeke was still stuck in his self-destructive curve. [something something using chapter 66 as a flimsy shield of an excuse] Mayhaps Historia would do something about it (I don't expect her saviour complex to kick in, she's not someone who may be able to cure his 20+ year-old trauma)

Come to think of it, both of their characters are defined by the promises they made to their loved ones (Zeke's being fulfilling the euthanasia plan and Historia's being living she wouldn't regret). However, the former is being miserable through adhering to his promise, whereas the latter suffers all the same by not keeping her promise. [idk idk it's just very interesting to point out]

I like this version more since it has the ability to get more dark and yet more hilarious simultaneosly. Plus, this scenario gives both of them a similar size agenda to hold whereas with the first one it's the Zeke who holds more power in their dynamic.

I'm not very good when it comes to canon divergences. I don't believe I can do better than Yams in terms of thinking thru the politics these major changes should bring so there's that. I tend to live off of vibes, mostly, and the vibes these two give off are simply scrumptious

3) that's why I've been delulu about quasi medieval/fantasy au with those two. It's not much but It's about Zeke "taking a castle and holding his host there", with Historia being the lady of the castle who's obviously not chuffed with being occupied by an enemy army. That's it, that's the vibes

A random headcanon: his full name is Baker Baker. Also because we have no information on what happened after his parents died I'm choosing to believe he just raised himself from when he was a baby. I'd seriously like a genuine explanation of what happened there by the way because we do know his mother died and father left when he was a really small child and i don't think he would've been able to take care of himself. Who raised him? Does he have step parents? A somewhat sweet explanation for this I'd like to believe in is the witch realized he wouldn't survive on his own so she put a spell on him that keeps him alive until he's old enough to take care of himself. Maybe. We can never know.

General Opinion over said character: he is everything to me you do NOT understand. He along with Marvin are the definition of the word blorbo and poor little meow meow in my mind. Everything about him. His daddy issues. The green green hat. The fact that he can't find the cheese cloth. The way he drank the respect women juice while in the woods. The fact that he actually felt bad for Jack after his wife tricked him. His little dance when he got the money. No more. "Maybe i just wasn't meant to have children" while surrounded by children he just accidentally adopted. The fact that he's canonically left handed in the original thank you Chip Zien for being born with the same dominant hand as me. I'm talking too much about this man.

Gender Headcanon: she's also trans for the same reasons as her husband it just makes the whole story funnier. Plus you can't argue with it using logic because like. "How did she get pregnant if she's trans?" idk how did Cinderella get a dress from a tree. This is why i love Into the woods. I can make up whatever bullshit and it works because logic just doesn't exist here.

A ship I have with said character: on one hand with her husband definitely them forever but on the other hand, trivender (Trina from falsettos and Lavender aka the baker's wife we'll get to where the name came from) is so close to my heart.

A random headcanon: okay here we go, the major one: Lavender. Lavender Baker my beloved. The headcanon itself came from an early trivender fanfiction which wasn't good and i was trying to build up something bigger than I have the motivation for, my bad, it doesn't matter. The one thing I'm glad I did was coming up with Trina naming her Lavender because she didn't have a chosen name yet. Considering lavenders are already my favorite flower and that lavender is considered the gayest color (lmao) she's just Lavender to me now. I'm obsessed

General Opinion over said character: if i were to summarize her in short it'd be "girlboss with a darkside". Because that's what she is. I still can't believe she died.

Oooh, I primarily write AUs so there's a lot for me to choose from, hehe. But if I'm looking primarily at complete works, probably "straight/edge" — just because it pushed me to pull from a deeply personal space. Also, I ended up really liking how I wrote the dynamic between Eren and Mikasa in that one: they were young in age, yet I felt like I infused their relationship and love for one another with a maturity that I think most people don't believe young people are capable of possessing. Plus (light spoiler), their story ended a bit tragically, and I am a sucker for unhappy endings and a lot of angst. 💔

[28] Does anyone read your fics before you post them? If so, who?

Yes! I share this all the time over on Twitter, but my husband reads every single fic/chapter before I post it. I consider him one of my "ideal readers" because he doesn't actually read much, lol. So if he's able to understand what I'm trying to convey with each chapter or story, I feel like it's in a good place to be consumed more widely.

[37] Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

Ahhh, okay - I'm gonna cheat a bit because this is my own ask box, and I'm gonna share two that I really like and don't think it got enough love.

The first is "chance with you": it's the sequel one-shot to straight/edge. I can understand why people didn't gravitate toward it because (1) it really twists the knife that I lodged into people's hearts with the main longfic, lol and (2) there's no smut (and I think people gravitate toward my smut, which is understandable). I just liked how I handled the tragedy and sexual tension in that one. I knew it would be a hard pill for people to swallow that this deep love between two people wouldn't come to fruition, but it was the story I wanted to tell, and I am proud of telling that story.

The second is a canon-divergent JJK fic, "splinters." I wrote it for two extremely rare pairs (megumi x tsumiki and sukuna x yorozu), but it was a really complicated dual-consciousness, demon-possession smut fic that I went through mental gymnastics to figure out how to tell the story succinctly, lol. But ultimately I was really happy with how it turned out.

it's weird that people try to make vegeta a good/better person by demonizing other characters (turning yamcha into a jerk, portraying goku as a horrible dad, etc.) when like. vegeta is a good character BECAUSE he's such a massive jackass. he gets better, he gets character development. it's kinda detrimental to his character to try and pretend he was always morally pale gray when that's both a very recent development and something early vegeta would probably have killed you for.

it's also kinda ridiculous. goku's grandpa might have died when he was young, but he still had him for a while, plus several other supportive adult figures. vegeta... didn't. the vast majority of his life was spent in the frieza force, including about half of his formative years. and before that he lived in a society that sent babies off to commit genocide.

portraying vegeta as a good dad isn't just non-canon, it's borderline impossible. he has no earth-approved social skills, he doesn't know how to interact with other people on an equal playing field, he has pretty much no ability to process his feelings in anything resembling a remotely healthy manner.

vegeta figures out future trunks is his son when piccolo says his name, and while he was hostile to him before that (bc, y'know, he's vegeta), it gets markedly worse after the fact. now i don't personally believe present vegeta had any obligations to future trunks to act as his father (bc he technically wasn't; that was an alternate version of him as the timelines had already diverged at that point, but also bc i don't expect any parent of an infant to know how to handle a time traveling teenage version of a literal baby), but he definitely had no right to be as needlessly nasty to him as he was.

but that's sort of the point– vegeta's only real experience with fathers has been his own (and. frieza? if you count nekomajin as canon, which. eh), and he knew the guy for like four or five years before getting sent off to frieza. vegeta doesn't know what to do with a kid, he barely even knows what to do with himself.

even after realizing he cares about trunks and sticking around post goku dying, he doesn't really seem to know what to do with trunks. all he can do is spar, and frankly i don't think he's very good at fighting opponents without trying to kill them. he has no clue what he's doing

vegeta hugging trunks wouldn't be nearly as important a scene as it was if vegeta was at all a competent parent. what ultimately cements vegeta as an official permanent resident of team good guy in z is the chain of events starting with hugging trunks before heading off to try to take buu out with him. when he comes back, it's fully with the expectation of dying again (this time for realsies) and ultimately what convinces him to fuse with goku is the realization that buu absorbed trunks.

this is huge for him– setting aside his pride and working with goku to save earth is major. but it wouldn't be if he'd always been like that. he knowingly and willingly risks his very existence just to buy goku time to power up, he's the one who sets up the final wishes, and he's the one who realizes earth needs to save itself. none of that would've been possible if he hadn't grown as a person, and almost all of that is due to his love for trunks.

vegeta being a shit parent is unironically one of the most important parts of his character arc

For one thing, everyone's paired up: Bill and Tara, Missy and Yvonne, even Mom's got her friend Christine over with her son Thomas (who is lovely by the way - he gets along great with Adam) - the point is, I could use company. I know you're working on a case, but can't it wait until after Christmas? Plus, everyone's asking after my "handsome partner" - don't let that get to your head though. 

We were telling ghost stories last night, and I think I scared everyone quite a bit with the story of how I found you on the Queen Anne… I don't expect you'd remember much from it, seeing as you were passed out in the middle of the Atlantic, but the wind roared, the skies shook and the waves raged oh so furiously that night - it was a fun story to tell! I was tempted to talk about the time we were trapped in that haunted house, especially since it was Christmas and all that, but I wanted to save it for when you were there. One, because I haven't the slightest idea what was happening to you while we were separated; two because I do feel like that one is our story to tell, you know what I mean?

Anyway, I've got to go now - Mom needs help in the kitchen and Bill is busy with the baby, so it's up to me to chop the vegetables...

Dear Fox,

You did say in your letter that I should call you that outside work, so I'm trying it out. It's definitely odd, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Fox Fox Fox Fox Fox Fox Fox. See, I'm practicing. 

I don't know if I ever told you, but I've always liked foxes, even when I was a child. We used to have plenty in the woods near the house. Missy and Bill were always scared of them, but I loved to watch them from a tree or from behind a bush (only because mom and dad wouldn't let me get any closer) - watch the way their fur shined under the sun; the way they prowled around, weaving expertly around the trees; the way their ears would perk up, bodies go still, and the way the world around them would fade away when they sensed their prey. In a way, I guess they're like you with the paranormal - the whole world and everyone in it fades away when there's strange lights in the sky, doesn't it? 

Thank you for the photos you sent back, by the way. I showed Adam the goofy one with you and the massive teddy bear - now he wants to meet you too.

As for the one from your window, you're right, the city does look wonderful this time of year. All the snow, and the lights…

Speaking of lights, have you got a Christmas tree, Fox? I know you don't believe in God and Christmas but you do believe in Yuletide cheer, don't you? If you won't come over here, you should at least meet up with Frohike, Byers and Langly; have fun, laugh, drink. In fact, I'm having some Chardonnay right now, and I know you don't usually go in for white wines, but this one is delicious and I have it to blame for my sloppy handwriting that seems to be getting sloppier as I progress down the page. If you were here, I'd let you have a sip from my glass, even though the last time I let you have some of my pinot noir, you drained it...!

I looked over the files you sent me, and as far as I can tell, there's nothing wrong with the vegetation. It is quite verdant for winter, I'll give you that, but some species of plants shed constantly all year round instead of at one go in winter - evergreens for example. They're not uncommon. You might just be reading into it too much if you think it has anything to do with the case. This is the point where I usually tell you you're off your rocker, you say I'm too closed-minded, and we have our little back and forth dance… too bad I'm not there for it. How are you coping without me? No one to shoot down your fantastical ideas, no one to stop you from chasing after a suspect in the woods at night, no one to keep you trapped within the "confines of science"... you must be having a ball. Don't get too used to it though - I'll be back before you know it to fill our basement with plenty of (gasp) logic and reason. And some tinsel. Our office could really use some tinsel, don't you think?

I actually do know about the time you dressed up as Spock. We were down at your place, and I saw a picture collecting dust, of you in a blue shirt and pointed ears. Fox Mulder was adorable back then, what happened to him? And was that gray box you were pointing at the camera supposed to be a phaser? Point is, the Spock you were was no realer than the Spock Mr. Jenson saw on the alien ship, and I know you don’t take Scott Jenson seriously either, but I’m just saying.

Okay, I think I've had too much wine. Nothing too bad, but I've come over all giggly and I don't think I can write for much longer without saying ridiculous things - probably wisest to stop now. Don't forget to keep me updated on your case.

Are you really coming here? God, I didn’t expect you to take me up on my offer! Everyone’s delighted of course, this’ll be the first time you’re properly joining us for Christmas… but yes, that means you will have to hold hands around the table, say grace and play nice. It’s a shame that your lead didn’t pan out, but I for one am glad Skinner’s forcing you to get out of the building unless you have a case. Knowing you, you searched every nook and cranny for anything you could find, but since you’re coming here, I’m assuming you came up empty. 

I know you wouldn’t, but Mom asked me to tell you not to bring too many bags. The house is jam-packed, what with babies and kids and pets on top of everyone’s Christmas presents… we’re going to have to share a room, too, because every guest room is taken up. Mom would probably make you share with Bill normally (which I’m sure both of you would have been very happy with) but he’s got to be with Tara because of the baby - so I guess we’re roomies, partner. Just make sure you don’t kick, because I swear to you I will kick back, no mercy.

You really didn’t have to buy presents, you know that?  It’s my mom’s house, not Buckingham Palace; you don’t have to “say thank you.” Anyhow, the gesture is appreciated, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you got me this year. You’ll be pleased to know that I have your present with me - I brought it along just in case you did come, and I guess it was worth it. 

I mentioned the bags, I mentioned the rooms, am I forgetting anything? Wait. Right. Bring some nice clothes please Fox, none of those holey jumpers with chocolate stains on them - you know about my family's Christmas dance tradition, decorate the hall, dance by the tree, take about four dozen pictures - you know the drill, I've complained to you about it a hundred times, at least. Point is, you do not want to be photographed with holes in your clothes, because those photos will go into Mom's album, and they'll stay there forever like an FBI evidence file of how Fox Mulder danced to White Christmas wearing swiss cheese instead of a jumper, and this particular evidence file will be viewed repeatedly, every single year. So again - bring some nice clothes. Oh, and if you bring that ratty blue hoodie of yours, you're not getting within 10 feet of me, forget about a dance.

I started writing this, and then realized that by the time this gets to you, you'll already be here - so this one is just for me, to keep in my journal. 

God I miss you, even more now that I know you're only a few hours away. I've missed you this whole time. Being with my family is nice, but I miss our banter; our jokes; the way you drive me crazy with your theories but always manage to make me laugh in the end. I miss your smile and your green eyes and your sunflower seeds, I miss your warmth and your comfort and your pine cologne that always makes me feel safe. 

I miss you, Fox.

The house looks lovely right now - I've always thought it looks dreary and miserable except at Christmastime - when there's candles and holly wreaths and pinecones and baubles absolutely everywhere… that's when it really comes alive. But the place has really changed for good this time - you'll see it when you're here. I'll be on the porch, waiting for you, but I'm all you'll be able to recognize. Mom ended up painting the place, adding lights, replanting the garden, the whole nine yards. It could be a different house!

Nico falls into Tartarus. Jason follows shortly thereafter. The Heroes of Olympus deal with the consequence.

North is a rewrite of The House of Hades and The Blood of Olympus, although it's actually starting at the end of Mark of Athena-- when Percy and Annabeth are about to fall into Tartarus... except in this version, it's Nico who falls in their stead, and, shortly thereafter, Jason. The thing is, it turns out Jason and Nico have a shared past, and being forced to rely on each other until they reach the Doors of Death, they will find themselves unpacking memories...

This fic has everything I love: slow burn, pining, hurt/comfort, the "Jason and Nico knew each other and were friends before Jason was abducted by Hera" headcanon, and most importantly, it develops all of the characters' relationships in addition of Jason and Nico's. I might be getting a little too passionate, but I fully believe it's a literary masterpiece... like! the LAYERS it contains......and the writing is beautiful. all the parallels and literary devices the author used live in my head rent free.........truly, I cannot recommend it enough

II. Post-Blood of Olympus fics

(aka, works that ignore Trials of Apollo (because it's a lying bitch who lies) and develop stories from the crumbs of Jasico we got in Heroes of Olympus. written by happy people :))

- Homebound, by Escopeta

[90 chapters, 800k words]

homebound [HOHM·bound] English (adj.) moving or traveling homeward

Reyna told him that they had two homes. But in all honesty? Nico didn’t fully believe her. He's still the creepy Death Boy to most, and people continue to actively avoid him if possible. He doesn’t belong at Camp Half-Blood; everyone knows it. He’s giving it a shot anyway if only to find a place he can truly call home. But if there's anything he learned from those few years of grade school, it's that the word "home" is a noun: a person, place, or thing. And to his surprise, Nico will find that "home" is defined not by darkness, solitude, and cold, but by sunshine, company, and warmth.

It's not a "where" or a "what", but a "who".

Post-canon fix-it. Slow build. Slice of life. Friends to lovers. Mutual pining. Natural character aging. ⚠️ Rated M for an almost-smut scene plus other scenes at the very end, but the rest is T.

So, Homebound... Whew. It took me five whole days to finish this fic and. It was a Lot (in a positive sense)....There are so many things I loved about it and I am definitely going to re-read it entierely someday :') It explores in length the theme of home (recurrent in Jasico fics since it's also linked to their relationship in canon) and I am amazed at how it managed to remain canon-compliant with Heroes of Olympus while developing an actual romance that works and makes me go aaah....poetic cinema. I mean, we all know the basis for their friendship growing into romance was already there, but I will never stop realizing it over and over again when reading fics, how, yes, Jasico could've been a thing in canon and it wouldn't have felt off. Truly lives in my head rent free.

Oh! Just a thing: Homebound features temporary Solangelo, but it's a very different Solangelo than from the iterations you can find in "classic" Solangelo fics. But I really liked how Escopeta wrote Will-- this Will is far from perfect, often harsh, and has caused hurt, but he felt so... fleshed out? in comparison to other depictions I've read of him. I ended up really appreciating his character and the evolution the author made him go through :)

- Home is Enough, by seofim

Our Dictionary was so, so sweet and a pure joy to read. It’s the kind of fic that I’d love to get a physical copy of — this one would be a little hardback book, filled with little sticky notes bookmarks on my favorite words.

It's been a few years since anything notable happened in their lives. Nico was mostly growing accustomed to the calm of it all, after spending so long trying and failing to fix one of the worst things that had ever happened to him. Until he catches a glimpse of someone in a reflection. He's really trying to not hope for anything.

Years we lost is a fix-it of sorts, taking a loose approach to canon after the events of The Burning Maze. In this fic, years have passed since Jason's death, and as Nico -- who had first gotten lost in grief -- was finally properly mourning his friend and making peace with himself, Jason reappears out of nowhere, with no memories. Angst and pining ensue.

A couple of things I loved especially in this fic are the Valdangelo roommate situation / friendship, and the role played by minor goddesses in the story!! I won't tell more about it, but I can guarantee you that this work is the Good Shit. and written with so much love...

Reading a story about grief also helped me put words on it-- it's not a feeling I am familiar with nor I am great at dealing with, and... I am glad I found it :')

I had a headcanon session with some anons a few years ago about how the Strix plot in TO would've been such a cool plot to bring Caroline in with. It's an idea I got because we were complaining about how we wished the TVD Augustine plot would've been Caroline's instead of Elena's. It was a society basically that tied back to idk if both her parents or just her dad, but basically he knew about vampire's and what not??

Now Bill when he found out Caroline was a vampire, legitimately believed he could get her to stop feeding on blood completely??? I can't remember if he said he'd seen it be done but he did for sure think it was possible and seemed to know how to go about it. Also he knew how to resist compulsion! The Strix, was a elitist vamp society basically that Elijah founded and who the first vampire he sired was in charge of when we meet him. And theeeey had a guy in there who only fed on the blood of enemies he beat in a fight??? And they said it'd been decades since he fed by that point. Plus, Tristan also knew how to resist compulsion. SO we created a little headcanon plot nugget of if the Srix are where Bill learned that from and wouldn't it have been neat if they knew who Caroline was.

So I've always wanted to write that canon divergence of TO with an addition of Klaroline ofc. But I would need to rewatch TO to do and it eughhhh, I don't wannaaaaaa lmao. I'd love to try and write it one day though!

🍑 what kind of fanfiction do you think people would write about your work? Would you read it?

There could be really cool opportunities for what ifs/canon divergence. I like to put my characters through moral dilemmas at least once per book (lol), so I think making them choose the other option or having another OC choose would be super fun as a fanfic writer. There's also the whole 'what if this thing hadn't happened to this character but to this one'.

Also modern AUs. With fantasy and sci-fi there are always modern AUs.

BUT I wouldn't read the fanfictions. Personally, I feel like authors 'intruding' fandom spaces can ruin the general experience. Imagine writing hardcore smut knowing the original writer will read it. Plus, I just genuinely believe an author shouldn't cross some boundaries, even if social medias make it very easy, especially because many can't handle the consequences.

              Vamp!Verse: 10/10 -- Gin is a total fucking baddie, his flirting game has GOT to be the strongest here out of any other verse. Not to mention Rangiku is actively KILLING HIS KIND and she's supposed to want him dead, but like ..... have you seen him??? Have you looked into his weird inhuman and utterly captivating eyes?? Rangiku wants to be destroyed by vamp!Gin in the kinkiest of ways sorry not sorry. I think this verse is the only exception to the rule I'm establishing with this list ( aka Rangiku finds Gin most attractive when they have a solid foundation and she knows she can trust him )

              Redemption!Verse: 9/10 -- by the time the winter war is over and Gin tells her the truth and he gets reinstated and has to live day in and day out with what he's done / is actively trying to make amends, their relationship is finally back on solid ground and has a stronger foundation than ever before. There's no shaking their bond after everything they've been through; the stability that their relationship now offers is a total fucking turn on. Feeling safe and secure??? Finally knowing the truth, and being able to fully heal from those old wounds??? What's NOT to love about that!?

              Dad!Gin: 8/10 -- I CAN'T BELIEVE I CAN'T DUPLICATE RATINGS I'M SO MAD LOL this one's right up there with Redemption verse, especially since they kinda bleed together further down the timeline. Seeing his eyes light up when he's bonding with Keiko and enjoying fatherhood is just... chef kiss. Seeing Gin HAPPY and thriving is a turn on, in and of itself ---- especially after everything he's been through. And seeing how well he takes care of their daughter just makes Rangiku's heart all warm and happy.

              Hitman!Verse: 7/10 -- SHE'S STILL WARMING UP TO HIM IN THIS VERSE but again, have you seen him??? She's not a big fan of guns in hitman verse so I have to dock points for that but Gin also looks sexy WITH his guns all strapped to his body so there's a bit of a DILEMMA going on here lmfao ( plus she hasn't seen him shirtless yet so this number is BOUND to go up once things get spicy uwu )

              Gin (Captain/Pre-Betrayal): 6/10 -- LISTEN Rangiku is head over fucking heels and wants Gin to RAW HER every time they are around one another but he's a goddamn VANISHING ACT ( which just makes her want him more lbr-- )

              Gin (Lieutenant): 5/10 -- AGAIN I HATE THAT I CAN'T DUPLICATE RATINGS because this would be WELL up there!!! Cocky arrogant Lieutenant!Gin is Rangiku's sexual awakening okay it's when she realizes how fucking hot he is and SHE KNOWS that he knows it and it drives her absolutely bonkers but she wouldn't change a single thing. They're having a good time, breaking rules and being young / wild -- Gin excites her and pulls her away from any and all worries she might have while climbing the Gotei ladder and finding her footing in the 10th Division. Rangiku wears a neck scarf around this part of the timeline ( and well into her time as a 3rd seat ) bc she's hiding hickeys LET'S BE REAL HERE LOL

              Gin (Second in Command/Las Noches): 4/10 -- I'M REALLY JUST DESCRIBING THE CANON DIVERGENT VERSE WHERE RANGIKU INVADES HUECO MUNDO WITH HER SHINIGAMI PALS HERE BUT holy shit Rangiku is SO SO MAD AT GIN but she's also missed him and the way his body feels against hers and for the love of FUCK she's fallen for a bad guy and she fucking hates herself for it but does she still find him hot??? Of fucking COURSE--

              Reborn!Gin: 3/10 -- THIS ONE'S HARD because he's been reborn and he's not HER Gin anymore, but he's still Gin ... and she's trying to come to terms with that. So while she still finds him attractive, it's ---- DIFFERENT, in this verse. I think her love for his very soul overpowers anything else, here. Instead of wanting him in a sexual / physical nature, her desire for him to be okay and happy overpowers everything else.

              Inari!Gin: 2/10 -- SADLY I HAVE THE LEAST EXPERIENCE WITH THIS VERSION OF GIN which is my fault because I haven't properly developed and/or written Rangiku in this universe so I'm giving him the lowest rating WHICH HONESTLY UPSETS ME BECAUSE IF HE LOOKS ANYTHING LIKE THE BBS DEMON!GIN THEN HE SHOULD BE ALL THE WAY UP AT A 9 OR A 10/10 BUT WHATEVER LOL

So as a multi-fandom blog, what was your first fandom? Or at least the first one you remember being apart of? I did a deep dive of your stuff, was it Zootopia or Red vs Blue? 👀👀?

Don't worry! It's not like, some traumatic thing or anything! 😅 I guess it's just embarrassing? But honestly, we're on Tumblr, what can ya expect in terms of past teen fic writing. I doubt you wanted a massive deep dive into this but I'll share nonetheless! Plus, I kinda wanna make this a lesson about fic writing and its struggles so if you wanna bear through go ahead! I also have a feeling this'll be a bit long so I'll spare people's feeds with a "keep reading".

So Red vs Blue and the Halo crossover was my first ever fic I wrote. I won't go into the details of any of my fic's plot because they were lame, but also because I don't really have time for that. But yeah, its concept is/was like most abandoned fic concepts you see: had good potential but was written by an amateur writer who was way out of their depth. It was essentially a multi canon divergence fic and was supposed to mesh together both stories during critical moments in both their franchises but I obviously half-assed it.

But I wasn't apart of the Red vs Blue fandom as much as I consider being apart of a fandom. Zootopia? Now that was the first time I was ever into a fandom. I was following all the big fic writers and their fics like @demonwriterx or @upplet, soaking up nearly every fic artist and their fanarts, and talking with other fans! Try Everything was my writing song! (Still listen to it, it's a pretty good motivation song). I knew Zootopia fun facts, watched the movie countless times, and as you no doubt know, I wrote a fic for it.

Zootopia: Partners in Crime or ZPIC, was a fun adventure I don't regret being apart of. It's one my biggest fics on FFN and also has my most words ever written as of late, going over 430K. The fan response was amazing as well as the community interaction. My old beta @legoaustin11 was truly a great collaborator and definitely had a bigger hand in its development in the later chapters. He wrote a chapter, helped me write some scenes and greatly helped my creative processes.

When I told him about going on hiatus, part of me knew I wouldn't be returning. And as time grew on I kind of weighed the options of letting him take over. Austin didn't exactly know the entire plot of ZPIC and wouldn't exactly have access to the fic to upload newer chapters. He and I kept in touch well after its hiatus here and there and last I heard from him he was doing okay during the first lockdown! It's not something I thought much about, but ZPIC being continued is something I'd run by him first before all else. Regardless, ZPIC was also a learning experience in that I wasn't prepared.

Legends of Avatar: the Untold Story or LoA, sorta fell in the same boat but I genuinely do believe I'll return to that one someday. Just not any time soon. But it was also my second dive in doing a canonical rewrite but more properly and more thought out. I still have proper notes and layouts of what's to come! And I do return to writing it here and there.

MTBMS, my oneshot fics, and L&L taught me about being prepared and having layouts for my stories. ZPIC had an ending, but it wasn't written out---not in concept or in a scene. MBTMS? College AU, Superhero AU, Childhood AUs, they have endings. L&L has chapters written out in advance and scenes and plot structures laid out. I was just an amateur when I wrote ZPIC and it clearly shows.

That's not to say every fic I have written/will post has been fully planned. My Arcane and RatLD oneshots weren't entirely planned, but my Taang oneshots were! MTBMS wasn't at first going to 100 chapters but I decided to make it that way when I was approaching 50 chapters (chapter 49 was where I announced trying to make it to 100). Then when I made that decision, I decided to pace out and ease up on its update schedules.

To make a long winded story worthwhile:

The thing I learned about fic writing is that it isn't as lax as you convince yourself it to be sometimes. Not to say every fic or fic writers must go through sheer amount of planning and plotting. But I noticed that the ones who dream big? Fall short like how I did and it's kind of ourselves to blame for that. A good lesson to consider is if you are going to aim big and shoot far, then take the time to adjust your crosshairs and practice your breathing. It's harder and more ambitious than you might realize! Taking a step back to think ahead has some great benefits.

All in all, the journey was great and though I'm not apart of the Zootopia fandom as much as I was before, it still holds a massive place in my heart for what it started for me. Sure the movie was basically copaganda and a sorta poor take on racism, but its BIG theme of implicit biases and just overall overcoming of status quo for modern society was something I found endearing and heartfelt. I imagine I lost quite a few Zootopia followers along the way, but if you're still sticking around from then? Thanks! ( ^‿^) Not sure why ya are, but thanks!
