•4b Ezra as A + Spencer’s pill storyline and Spencer and Aria’s breakdowns Shadow Play included of course, and also including other things I loved in this time period like The Liars decoding Ali’s Diary and Emily processing her Alison feelings this is the period of the show where Emison is most interesting to me (so really everything from 4.14-4.21). 

•Mona as A in the first two seasons and reveal in UnmAsked

•Spencer’s arc in 3b + Spona in that time period generally 

•Emily’s coming out arc in s1 for all the things about the show which haven’t aged that well I do think it really holds up / is one of my favorite I’ve seen. 

•Dollhouse and 6.01-6.02 processing of trauma especially for Aria and Hanna who I think get the most interesting beats of this (which I think ultimately makes sense because they’re characters who are more in tune with their emotions than Spencer and Emily are or at least that’s how I see it…)

honorable mentions to Hanna’s 5a plot pre Scream on Me I love the reflection work with her and Alison and her identity crisis, Spencer and Jason’s relationship developing, Melissa murdering for Spencer that was something I was spoiled for before I’d gotten there in the show but out of the retcons it’s one of the things I think does track with the arc of that dynamic, tbh I had a lot of fun with Aria on the A team in 7b it was my favorite part of that half season in general. Any Halloween episode plot if we’re talking about individual eps rather than sections of the show. That’s just off the top of my head so I definitely forgot something

Might be an unpopular opinion but tbh I don’t blame the PLL girls for not forgiving Mona, at least in season 3-6A. You could say that in 6B-7 they could have forgiven her because it’d been 6 six years so thats fair but seasons 3-6A, totally fair they don’t forgive her.

If I’m remembering the timeline correctly, season 1 and 2 take place in the same school year, the pilot starts the day before the 1st day of school and season 3 starts out right before they start senior year. season 6A ends with them going to college. That means that everything Mona did to them was LAST YEAR during this period. Mike dated Mona even though Mona was torturing Aria as A LAST YEAR. Mona hit Hanna with a car LAST YEAR. Most of season 3B to 5 midseason finale is over the course of like 2 months, since 3B has the Halloween train and 5 has the Christmas episode and both occur in the same year.

Everything Mona did was LAST YEAR for the girls pre-time jump, I don’t blame them for not liking her and not trusting her. I know people always say that Mona helped the girls so much and they still don’t trust her but like why should they? Post dollhouse? Fine they can trust her in 6A, they went through a lot there so I get the building of trust during that whole thing but pre-dollhouse? I get it 100%

As great as having a whole season be dropped onto streaming is, I miss the 24 episode seasons with the like “season 3a” and “season 3b” for the mid season finales and breaks and all that. Someone posted something about holiday specials and YES I agree. PLL halloween episodes were always top tier, Grey’s Anatomy holiday episodes, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill🥲I miss it.

Rewatching season 1-2 pll is such a vibe ! I forgot how great they were and it was when the plot seemed cohesive ! Season 3 I can already see cracks of it going downhill

Seasons 1 and 2 were so cohesive and well done. I think season 3B might be my favorite half-season of all - mostly for Spencer's storyline - but I've always thought 3A is the first time we really start to lose that cohesion. It felt like they were starting to just throw random things at the wall to see if they stuck.

honestly I can't choose between spanna, spemily, and hannily. those three girls have fantastic duo dynamics between them and each one of them has a special place in my heart, so I'm just going to say that my fav friendship is the three of them as a group.

naturally, ezria...marlene king deserves jail for tricking an entire generation into believing that ezria's relationship was romantic rather than disgusting and predatory lmao.

My 'fav' thing is how ff wanted more space for og shows but.... they don't air anything og on for example the weekends lmao like... they so could have put sh on sundays 10am or sth and like....leave it there for 3b/s4... bc then they still would have gotten nf money and get to keep the important 7/8c timeslot... but maybe its my european, logical side against the 'woke' americans

bc for sure there is no fcking rule for american tv that og shows can only be airing on nights. and don’t tell me the 1000th rerun of some shitty show brings in more view for them at sundays 10am than sh would have lmfao

lmao The thing is, they don’t even have enough original shows for a 5-day week. Back-to-back airing stopped being a thing back in 2016, shortly after the rebrand. The only time new stuff airs is on the 8pm slot.

Freeform only aired/s 3 original shows a week. 2.5 or 3 hours of original content a week. Putting “Shadowhunters” on a Monday now is the big exception but they wanted to get over with that one, so…

They have the second half seasons of S.iren and Grown.ish for summer now, but those are again only 2 days. Maybe this PartyOf5 reboot is ready by that time to throw that in there. But once this is done, there will be most likely no new original stuff from August until January. The rest of the schedules are reruns of old shows and 20-year-old Disney movies all day every day.

Basically, it is just a matter of time until FF becomes a full-on rerun channel and the little original stuff that they didn’t successfully screw and fuck over after the SH stunt, might either go to Hulu or Disney+. But looking at their current numbers/demos and especially how much this PLL spin-off tanked that pretty much should have saved FF after the SH stunt, it’s best to simply pull the plug.

Is it bad I even liked the Malec scenes in 3x09? One thing I am hoping when 3B airs that SH goes the way PLL goes in the sense after 3 seasons they no longer give a damn about the book series. I know PLL was vastly different and it was a teen show where SH isn’t. This show proves it can be so awesome with consistent writing (3x01 and 3x10). The writers are capable but then have 3x09 which set the show back but they were some good things about it. I thought it wasn’t completely terrible.

Both SH and PLL are Teen shows. SH is a Teen Fantasy and PLL is a Teen Drama ;)

The show has been putting interesting twists to the book plots that it’s chosen to adapt (the Seelie Court Kiss was a political statement by the Seelie Queen, Jordan’s abusive behavior is better depicted in the show, Jace’s possession happened in a controlled, personal stake rather than generating a global war). 

But I absolutely agree that it is past time to ditch the source material. The most interesting beats of the show have been original stories. Everything to do with the Downworlders (from the relationships and meetings between the factions to Alec’s Downworlder Cabinet Meetings). Clary figuring out who she is and her friendship with Izzy. Luke dealing with both the Shadow and Mundane worlds. Jace learning about the Herondales. Lydia and Aldertree. Even Izzy’s addiction, as badly handled as it was, gave the character more dimension than anything she had in the books.

There has been some misses but most of the show’s original content have been successes.

least favorite character: Ezra Fitz. Byron Montgomery is in second place which makes sense as they are practically the same person 💀

brOTP: I’ll say Spanna even though I also like them romantically, and Spencer and Jason have a really interesting dynamic as siblings/foils that I appreciate a lot

OTP: Vandermarin and Spemily, Vandermarin’s probably #1 ultimately because they’re soo the canon love story of Pll… but Spemily is so underrated imo and it’s my favorite Spencer ship and Spencer’s my favorite character so that gives it something extra for me. 3rd place is Spencer x Mona

OT3: going to say Hanna/Mona/Alison is ultimately the most fascinating one to me in the narrative but I’m open to a lot of different poly combinations with this show

NOTP: I don’t like any of the main het pairings but especially not Ezria

favorite storyline: Spencer’s 3b arc and Spencer’s 4b arc I love when my fave is suffering and in a spiral it’s fascinating xd. 4b is probably my favorite section of the show period between the Spencer addiction plot (which definitely has it’s issues in the writing but Troian is just fantastic playing it), Shadow Play, the EzrA stuff and Aria’s processing which I find very engaging especially in She’s Come Undone, it’s also where Emily/Alison is most interesting to me because of the attention given to Emily processing her feelings (attention that it never given again after this :/) Hanna stepping into the role of detective more than Spencer and Spencer and Emily’s fights so a lot of interesting shifts in dynamics caused by them knowing Ali is alive now, Ali’s coded diary… I just love it in all it’s messiness xd.

least favorite storyline: Ezria and the deadnaming both were terrible. A lot of post time jump storylines

what I wish had happened but didn’t: Ezra going to jail, men being held accountable for literally anything, for the writers to care more or at all the last two seasons I think anything even slightly good that happens post time jump is thanks to the actors and not the writers and even most of them seemed tired

what happened that I wish hadn’t: Ezra/Aria endgame male chars being given unwarranted grace in general

favorite storyline: the entirety of Blue Lily Lily Blue there’s so much in that book I adore, Persephone mentoring Adam, Blue and Calla scenes and Blue’s internal conflict while her mother is missing, Gwenllian and her dynamic with Blue and learning more about mirror abilities/what Blue is, Adam’s character arc in that book in general, so many of my favorite Bluesey and Pynch scenes and Persephone’s death is a gut punch that really works and the title… I love it :).

least favorite storyline: the ending of TRK is kind of anticlimactic even though I still love it like the other books

what I wish had happened but didn’t: Blue’s arc to have better closure in book 4

i hope the perfectionists is darker than pll, along the lines of scream. i enjoyed both shows because it was easy to love the story lines and characters. me and my friend managed to binge watch scream in three days. i'm looking for something similar because there aren't an awful lot of shows on right now that i enjoy, its either entirely for teens or completely the opposite of what i like, tvd, teen wolf, pll, scream. on a scale of 1-10 how dark do you think this new show will be?

Sasha said in an interview that TP season 1 is darker than PLL’s season 1 but before we get excited at that, let’s just remember that season 1 wasn’t very dark to begin with so Sasha isn’t saying very much. PLL didn’t really get properly dark until season 3B in my opinion. But judging from the promo, I think it will be quite dark and mysterious. I think romance will be limited to an extent, since Ali is with Emily and Emily isn’t even in the show. So there’s a starter... screen time won’t be wasted on romance for one of the main characters. Emison fans may be sad but since I like PLL for its mystery, I’m happy. I obviously want it to be 11/10 dark but I think they’ll start off at a 6/10. I think the pilot will be setting the mood, introducing us to the characters, their lives, relationships with one another, etc. If they give everything they’ve got in the pilot and go 11/10 dark then there’s no way to incrementally get darker as the seasons go on. I think they’ll hold back for a bit and then as we go on and get more murders and more lies, it’ll become really quite twisted. Well, that’s just what I think. If they can somehow go 11/10 dark in the pilot then by season 2 crank it up to 12/10... do it! But this is Marlene y’all. Is that likely?

Open Letter to Marlene King

I don’t know if Marlene will ever read this but I wanted to just post and air out some of my feelings after watching PLL last night.

Marlene,

I know you are a busy woman but I would really appreciate if you would take the time to read this. My name is Brittany, I’m 23 years old and have been a long time fan of the show. I have been here since the pilot season one episode one. PLL was a show that got me through some pretty rough times. The show began when I was around 15 years old and honestly that year was one of the roughest of my life. I lost my grandfather, I lost several friends that just grew apart, and it was high school as if that wasn’t stressful enough. PLL was an outlet it was a show that I could turn on and forget about my problems whatever they may be.

It was a show that gave me courage to embrace my quirks. I was the nerdy girl who always loved a good book and who loved school. I was deemed as odd for it but seeing characters like Mona Vanderwaal and Spencer Hastings made me realize that it was okay to be like that. That I wasn’t an oddity that there were strong women characters who were like that in the world.

As I said previously I was around 15 when the show started and had never been apart of any fandom, didn’t know what a ship really fully was. None of it I was clueless but PLL made me experience that for the first time. During the first half of season 1 Spencer and Mona grew to become my favorite characters but just loving two characters changed after one episode in 1B. That episode was 113. The scene where Spencer followed Toby into the ally and watched him cry, in THAT moment I knew that there was something there and I fell head over heels for what would become known as Spoby and they became one of the first ships that I ever loved. I remember after 113 aired saying that I thought they were a good match and people telling me no you are insane they won’t ever be together, then 119 happened. After that I was a goner. I had found my PLL ship. The one that I would be ride or die with until the very end.

I loved the pureness of them, the fact that they were so deep and complicated. I remember during 2B when you used to give fans tidbits and how you basically told us about the 225 kiss outside of the police station before it even happened just to reassure us Spoby shippers that they would be fine. I remember how during 3B after Toby’s A reveal (that literally had me in so much shock that I about threw my remote at the TV) all of us spoby fans would as you if you could give us ANYTHING at all and you telling us to wait for it. Did I mention that I’m an eternal optimist? I didn’t? Well I am, so during this time I garnered the nickname of Spoby Cheerleader of the fandom because when everyone else was so down I would say, we always have hope, Marlene told us to wait for it and I trust her. Spoby is her baby creation she’ll not do us wrong. And the waiting paid off 324 happened and you gave us two amazing parallels with the hands touching with the coffee mug like in 117 with the snow globe and the call back to the motel in 119. That was the moment that I felt like I let the final guard down and fully trusted you as a writer Marlene.

I know for storyline purposes sometimes you have to mislead. I understand that. That’s why when 324 happened I was like okay see this proves my point Marlene won’t betray us. Season 4 was a great season with little to minimal drama and it was nice for a change to be the ship that didn’t have constant drama, but then season 5 happened. The season that I like to pretend doesn’t exist. I understand that couples need to have conflict but having Spencer kiss Colin and Johnny two characters who were in 4 episodes or less just because she was having problems with Toby wasn’t my idea of a great season. But I stuck through it and we got 524, wasn’t happy that Spoby didn’t talk about their problems but I was just happy that they were back together.

Then 6A, the last time we truly saw our ship together. 609 that scene Spencer telling Toby that her speech was about him.. was such a great moment then to come back in 6B and know that they had been ripped apart was pretty heart breaking to say the least. I understand that it was realistic for one of the couples to break up during the jump, I didn’t imagine it would be all 3 of the main couples. I honestly thought that one of them would make it through. Then Yvonne happened.. I loved Yvonne as a character, I love Kara who plays her, but you all as a writing team really did Yvonne and Kara a disservice. Then on top of that Caleb happened.

Before the jump Spencer and Caleb was one of my favorite friendships on this show. Now I can’t stand watching any of their scenes. What was the point in making Spaleb happen? Just to create more drama? Because between that and Yvonne it made a lot of people mad. And all of us spoby shippers had to go through 6B and all of 7A with nothing. Then 710 happened. And I thought there it is, there is hope. There is hope that Spoby will be endgame that they won’t be rushed but boy was I wrong.

Killing Yvonne was wrong on so many levels and I think you and the other writers realize it. I didn’t WANT Yvonne to die just so Spoby could get back together. After the accident I was fearful that’s what would happen, but then Kara told us she filmed for 713 and I thought okay maybe that’s her last episode and she leaves town. It literally hurt my soul watching her die RIGHT after marrying Toby. Because Yvonne deserved better than that. Kara deserved better than that. But after that all of us spoby fans thought okay so this is their way of making the way for their endgame we’ll take it even though it sucks.

Now all of us spoby fans waited.. and waited.. and waited.. Then we got the promo for 718 and we thought FINALLY we are getting our reunion it may be with only 3 episodes left but its better late than never. Then it ends up being a one night stand that obviously never gets talked about. Or so we thought. So we were like okay, well the promo in 720 there is Spoby stuff and we know that Keegan and Troian filmed together so they have to be together right? Boy were we wrong..

I can say honestly that the only good thing to come out of Spencer having a twin was that Troian got to show off her acting chops. I remember a year ago when the twin theories began popping up. I thought cool idea, but I doubt the show will go there and it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense. I was someone who thought that it was Wren and Melissa. When Torrey was revealed to be filming for the finale I thought it had to be true. Then to find out she filmed the scene at the stables then just filmed those two black hoodie scenes so that way Mona could peel off a mask of her face.. Just.. wow. In my opinion the finale was a mess. The pacing was so fast that it was hard to tell how much time had passed, the scenes jump all over  the place that my mother who is a casual watcher mentioned noticing it.

I can tell you that I had only 3 requests of this finale. I didn’t have to have all 3 but I wanted to have at least 2. I walked away with one and a half. Those requests were that AD make sense (did not care if it shocked me or not), that spoby was endgame and we saw them reunite on screen, and lastly that Mona got the endgame she deserved, that she got to have a happy ever after and not die. Ironically enough I thought that the last one was the one that I would walk away without.

This is my main gripe about Alex being AD why? I know in the finale it was explained as her being mad about Cece’s death and wanting revenge. Now to start off 6B it seemed like that was what AD wanted but it seemed as season 7 progressed that became less and less the motivation. By the end of 719 last week I had gathered that whoever AD was had strung the girls along saying they would win once AD knew who killed Cece and that would be that. Then why did AD set them up to where they would get caught with Rollins’ body by Tanner and go after them now a year later and not go after Mona? Mona is the one who killed Cece even if it was an accident, so why would Alex hire Mona on as a helper if that’s the person who killed her sister that she was so hell bent on getting revenge for? It doesn’t add up. The girls had nothing to do with Cece’s death. I would have honestly been fine with there being this many plot holes with the twin thing had you not involved Toby. What was the point of that? Having him basically be raped again without him knowing it. And tainting basically half of the spoby scenes we’ve had in 7B to boot. This is my question on some of the scenes where it was supposedly Alex instead of Spencer, how did Alex know about certain things. Like how did she know that Toby invited Spencer to the cabin if it was Spencer in the scene with him at the radley at the beginning of 718? How did Alex know that Toby said something about wanting to try horseback riding with Spencer when it was Spencer in that scene?

Only two scenes saved the final 10 minutes, Toby being able to figure out the correct Spencer and seeing what Mona did with Alex and Mary. I believe it was Keegan who said something about there being one final scene that he filmed with Troian on his last day that was super emotional and that it was just the two of them.. What happened to that scene? Was it cut for time purposes? Instead of doing the final scene as a backdoor pilot type situation for the Perfectionists couldn’t you have given Spoby fans a reunion of sorts? I didn’t have to be long it could have been a minute. Just of them saying they love each other one last time. Instead of that in the last scene of the girls we get one mention of Toby and that yeah they are sorta dating again. And what happened to the Toby script tease you posted about Toby saying “I used to know a girl that says hope breeds eternal misery” was that in the Spoby scene that was probably cut?

I’m normally not a bitter person. I’m usually an optimist, but I can say I honestly I’m mad, I’m sad, and I’m tired. Knowing that I was a long time fan of this show for 7 years and the one ship that I love got the complete shaft in the end. The one that you have claimed for years is like your child. I said above that I had begun to really trust you back in season 3 Marlene but now I feel like I’ve been kinda stabbed in the back. Honestly I wouldn’t be quite so mad if every other ship hadn’t have gotten a little bit of everything that we didn’t. Haleb got engaged before the last jump as well as married and are pregnant, Emison got two beautiful little girls (through unconventional and horrible means I do admit) and an engagement which they rightfully deserved, and Ezrians got an engagement way before anyone else did plus a wedding. While spoby shippers get a hey sorry that half the scenes that you thought were Spencer in season 7 were actually Alex and oh yeah spoby are basically back together mentioned in an off hand comment. I mean if you didn’t want to do a scene then why not have had Spoby sit next to each other at Ezria’s redo wedding, just showing them holding hands or something would have been enough for me at this point.

I hope you and the other writers read this and take it into consideration. And don’t get me wrong I don’t mind open ended endings, I was a fan of the Lost series finale and that is the most open ended finale ever. But after being loyal to a ship for 7 years it would have been nice to walk away knowing that they got to be happy and seeing it too.

Hopefully you all will do a spin off or a revival movie a few years down the road where Spoby can be explored a little more or if there are some deleted scenes you can put them on the DVD. Because we the fans deserve that after this finale.

my favorite Bad Thing about “pll” is that the events of season 3b, all of 4, and 5a took place within the few weeks between halloween and thanksgiving lmao

Just rewatched PLL’s season 4 premiere, and I forgot how freaking weird and gross it is that Spencer and Toby are back to being all cutesy coupley with absolutely NO mention whatsoever of Toby, you know, betraying Spencer, joining the A team, and causing her mental breakdown. It’s literally DAYS after all of that went down, and yet they’re totally back to normal, investigating the burned lodge and having breakfast together like nothing ever happened. In fact, it’s almost over the top how sweet and touchy-feely they are, with all of Spencer’s mooning over calling Toby her boyfriend in the breakfast scene.

It’s just so obvious that after the shippers lost their shit over the 3B storyline, the writers regretted the whole thing and tried to sweep it under the rug as quickly as possible. I think a big part of why I was never able to get over that betrayal is because of that - there’s no resolution, no period where Toby has to prove himself. Hell, even Ezra had to do at least some groveling for Aria’s forgiveness after the book thing. But there are no repercussions at all for Toby’s actions, and it makes Spencer look like an incredibly weak character.
