My theory (or hope 🤞🤞) for season 7 is still the couch theory.

Sooo I feel like they knew the show was probably going to end. Since Oliver shared something like they didn’t know until few minutes before the rest of us ABC picked them up (THANK YOUUU! It be so sad if it ended!) … So with that I’m thinking they made the ending where Buck tells Natalia let’s go get a new couch. Or something right? Like they knew if it ended at least Buck will get a new couch. Sooo I’m hoping now that they know (once strike is over.) they will be back now. Sooooo I hope for season 7 Buck and Eddie are moving in together, which leads to the famous blue couch into their new place. Then they sit down and kiss on it after it’s moved in. Christopher walks in and does the tween groan at his parents kissing making both guys laugh and pull apart. Christopher sits in the middle with both his dad and Buck his bonus dad on the couch. Then it fades out to show how Buck and Eddie got together. Like how they do the rewind 12 hours earlier or something. But this could be couple months ago or even weeks or days haha. Don’t get me wrong I love Buck’s loft but yeah for Buckley Diaz Family next step is moving in together, being boyfriends, having Tarlos over in their new place, and other friends laughing around the couch. Can even do a montage just Buckley Diaz Family on the couch in their new place. Playing video games again, eating dinner Buck made as a movie plays, tickle fights, sharing kisses, drinking beer as Christopher watches a tv show, … etc !

Sooooo please Ryan Murphy, Oliver Stark, Ryan Guzman, ABC… and anyone else involved with BUDDIE make them

Carlos will forever deny the high-pitched scream that leaves him the moment he opens the drawer to pull out a fresh pair of socks. What he won’t deny though, is the fact that his soul definitely left his body in that moment. 

He can already hear footsteps running towards the bedroom, his fiancé’s worried, “Babe?!?” echoing around the loft – and still, he can’t stop himself from putting his emotions into one frustrated yell of, “TK!!”

“I’m here, I’m here,” TK calls back, skidding to a halt in the doorway, using the door frame to stop his sprint. “What happened? What? Are you hurt?!”

Carlos tries not to explode at him, he truly does, so he simply glares at him with all the rage he feels and points to the drawer, pressing out through clenched teeth, “Your monster got free.”

TK, in all honesty, seems to light up as he steps over to the dresser and reaches into the drawer. “Oh, hey baby, hi. There you are. Hi.”

Something about that comment strikes Carlos as odd and he sucks in a deep breath, frustration rising, when he realizes what it is. “You knew he was out?”

At least TK has the decency to look sheepish while cradling the little monster to his chest. “He might’ve gotten away while I cleaned his terrarium earlier today.”

Carlos lets that information sink in for a moment, remembering how overly excited TK greeted him about half an hour ago when Carlos got home from his shift. How he seemed slightly breathless and waved it away as just being done with some workout but still had declined to share the shower with Carlos, claiming some tidying up he wanted to do.

That lying little… 

“And you didn’t tell me?” Carlos accuses to which TK almost reflexively replies, “I didn’t want you to freak out.”

“TK!”

And, yeah, that argument sounds eerily familiar.

Carlos pinches the bridge of his nose, trying not to think about the fact that he walked around the loft – mainly the bathroom and bedroom – naked while this little monster was running around. Or, worse yet, getting all his germs over Carlos’ clothes.

He points a finger at TK, giving him his strongest Officer Reyes glare. “It’s your turn to do the laundry and every single one of my socks will be in that machine, do you hear me?”

“Of course,” TK promises right away. “I’ll just… wash everything in that dresser, okay?”

March 27th, 1941

“What do you mean, you're going to Europe?” TK tries to control his voice as he chooses to ask the first of the myriad of questions that are exploding in his head.

“They need the help,” Alex explains calmly. He doesn't look TK in the eye when he continues, “That's why I enlisted.”

“You volunteered?” TK screeches, earning themselves a few glares from the other people having dinner at this fancy restaurant where he had thought about proposing to his boyfriend.

Maybe proposing isn't exactly the right word, since they can't actually get married, but TK had planned to promise forever to this man who's now telling him that he's volunteered to step into a war that doesn't even have anything to do with them.

This definitely isn't how TK had envisioned his evening going.

“Yeah,” Alex confirms in a low voice. “It's not unheard of, you know. We need to help.”

“We?” TK huffs. “It's not our war, Alex. Your selflessness is amazing, but I highly doubt that you dying for them is going to change the course of the war.”

“You can't know that,” Alex retorts. He sighs as he stretches his hand across the table to rest it on top of TK’s, but TK jerks back. “TK, please,” he tries again. “I know it's difficult to understand and almost impossible to accept, but all I'm asking of you is to respect my decision.”

“How can you ask me to respect that you want to—die for people who will never even know your name?” He tries to keep his voice steady and still low, so as to not attract any more attention upon them, but it breaks around the middle, tears threatening to fall. “Alex—”

“I'm a pilot,” his boyfriend interrupts. “That's what I am. That's the only thing I am. I know I can help. I'm going to, whether you want me to or not, but I'd hoped that you'd at least understand, what with your father being a high-up and—”

“War was what broke my parents.” It's now TK’s turn to cut the conversation off, veering it towards the pain he's feeling. “How could you think that I'd be fine knowing that you'd volunteered to die halfway across the world? When did this happen? How did I miss it?”

Alex doesn't say anything, as if sensing that TK needs to say everything that's crushing his heart.

“When?” TK asks, voice not louder than a whisper. He remembers, a second too late, the dispatch orders his father's signed this very same morning; TK was at Colonel Strand's office when a secretary came in with a stack of papers allowing American soldiers to fly out the very next morning. “Please don't say—”

“Tomorrow,” Alex says, looking down at his plate.

TK holds his breath for a few seconds, counts to five, and exhales slowly. He repeats to himself that he won't panic, that everything will be fine in the end. After seven rounds of controlled breathing, he feels confident enough to speak, even though his soul is shattered.

“Here I thought that tonight would be the first night of our whole future together…and it's actually the last night for us.”

Alex looks stricken as TK’s words seem to register. TK witnesses his boyfriend understand what his plan had been all along, as a lonely tear rolls down his cheek, as Alex wipes it away discreetly because he's a soldier and he needs to be tough, not sensitive. He looks down at his hands, balled in fists over the tablecloth, and exhales.

“Well,” Alex finally says. He reaches out to touch TK, and this time he lets Alex's fingers smooth the skin over his hands. “If this is our last night together, would you save a dance for me?”

That's what both disarms TK and breaks his heart, at the same time.

He has never been able to say no to Alex, not even once in the whole fourteen months, three weeks, five days and seventeen hours since they started dating. And yes, he's been counting—sue him.

“Of course,” TK breathes out slowly. “Wanna go to the pier after dinner?”

Hi! I saw your tag on your informal buddie lap makeout poll (Which, exceptional scientific inquiry. Cannot wait to see the results. Especially if it leads you to write something...)

Anyway, what is your thinking on lonestar and a potential buck +e ddie sex scene? (FWIW, I don't watch LS. I tried, but just could not. Not yucking anyone's yum, just didn't work for me.)

(Please note: after three hours of writing out this response, I realize I may have misunderstood your question 😂 If you meant "what do you think a buddie sex scene would look like given tarlos", please let me know and it would be my genuine pleasure to describe that in great detail. What follows is not that.....)

I have been thinking about the potential of a buddie sex scene more than I ought to, I'm sure. You could say I've been a smidge preoccupied since realizing all the legit sex scenes in the show happened in season 1/early season 2. In seasons 3/4, the closest I think we've gotten to textual sex is Madney having sex to induce labour and that consisted of Maddie throwing her shirt at Chimney from off-screen.

Someone on that post (can't find it now of course) said that 911 Lone Star took over the original 911 later time slot and thus took over the ability to have sexier content.

As someone who hasn't watched a television show live in like 5 years, your ask has prompted me to do actual research to confirm this 🤓 According to pogdesign, 911 currently plays Mondays at 8pm and 911LS plays at 9pm which supports the theory.

That said, it kind of strikes me as weird that 8pm is considered too early for sexy content? But maybe I'm just out of touch with cable television??

So I did more research! So much research omfg this took 3 hours of my life. 😅

First we define the issue at hand

I'm defining a "sex scene" as a scene that involves two or more people mackin' on each other with any of the following:

the beginning of clothing removal onscreen

the movement towards a bedroom or bed

getting into someone's lap as a sign of escalation

post-coital pillow talk or cuddling

actual shots of naked skin and writhing (softcore porn essentially)

So 911 got moved to 8pm. Do any other 8pm shows have sex scenes?

CW - The 100 🔥 (I know there was a minimum of 2 wlw sex scenes, though they may have been post-coital)

CW - Riverdale 🔥🔥 is another teen show that I don't watch so I youtubed "Riverdale sex scenes" and I'm led to believe at least one couple is banging semi-onscreen well into season 4 (it has 4 seasons???)

NBC - Chicago Med 🔥, a procedural show not about teenagers and seems to have a least 1 couple with sexy scenes (the other Chicagos air at 9pm and 10pm) and I saw lap sitting for a hardcore makeout for the other couple!!!!! TIM TAKE NOTES!

NBC - Superstore 🔥, a half-hour comedy that played at 8pm on NBC, did have at least this one cut-away sex scene

So 2 teen shows, 1 procedural and 1 comedy all had something in the way of "sex scenes" while airing at 8pm.

But what if Fox the network is the sex-scene-killers??

Apparently Fox literally has only 5 scripted dramas of which the 911 is one and the others are:

The Resident 🔥🔥, a medical drama that plays at 8pm as of season 2 (9pm for season 1) and the main couple seem to have several sex scenes, but interestingly from what I can glean from YT, they may have stopped after s2 (though the couple stays together until at least s4 from what I can tell)

LA's Finest 🚫, a rebroadcast through Fox, it airs at 9pm and YT didn't show me any sexy scenes

Fantasy Island 🔥🔥 which plays at 9pm and looks to have sexier content based on the trailer

911: Lone Star 🔥🔥🔥 which plays at 9pm. Tarlos have had like 2 heavy makeouts/implied sex scenes plus a pretty hardcore-for-tv sex scene in the s2 finale

So it seems like even for Fox, the 8pm timeslot isn't necessarily what's vetoing the sex scenes in 911. But just to hammer that home, I did even more researching into the watershed hours, which is apparently the designated time broadcasters can show sexiness, but in the US that's 10pm to 6am so if the restrictions were such that they couldn't show any sex scenes before 10pm, Tarlos wouldn't have gotten that finale action (thank you, IRL bff who watched 911LS so I didn't have to!)

TL;DR - a summation of our findings

The 8pm timeslot is not the sex-scene-killer I once thought it was (see: all them filthy shows)

911 being a cop show is not a sex-scene-killer (see: dramas, procedurals and comedies all had sex scenes)

Fox is not anti-sex in their 8pm scripted dramas in general (see: The Resident)

Fox is not anti-sex homophobically (see: Tarlos, Hen/Eva)

However!! There seems to be a somewhat weird, somewhat isolated trend of Fox shows either cutting off or tapering off sex scenes (see: 911, The Resident) after 2 seasons or specifically after 2019.

So what are the theories (from least to most favourite)?

Theory #1 (Buddie loses 🚫): "Something" happened at Fox in 2019. The Resident is the only true analogue to 911 as it's also on Fox, also premiered in January 2018, also started at 9pm but was moved to 8pm (in season 2, not season 3 like 911). If my very brief googling can be trusted, The Resident saw a lot of sex scenes in season 2 (at 8pm) but after 2019 there isn't much to write home about. That lines up with what we've seen in 911. If something happened internally at Fox that changed broadcasting guidelines for 8pm, then canon Buddie will not get sex scenes unless the timeslot changes back.

Pros: It would be a hell of a coincidence wouldn't it?? Both shows airing around the same time, both stop showing sex scenes around the same time???

Cons: It's pretty weak, I can't find anything that supports "something" happening in 2019 that would affect an 8pm timeslot but not the 9pm one.

Theory #2 (Buddie loses 🚫): Sex as a short-term sales tactic. Fox uses sex in the first two seasons of shows to boost ratings and get people hooked because sex sells. But then, for whatever reason, they taper it off. If so, Buddie being canonized would not produce any sex scenes as we're far removed from season 2.

Pros: The Resident and 911 both stopped showing sex scenes after season 2 from what I can gather

Cons: If sex sells, why wouldn't it keep selling all the way to the bank?? There's no reason to stop something that's working.

Theory #3 (Buddie wins 🔥): Actors are the roadblock. Fox is fine with sex scenes at 8pm but the actors aren't comfortable! If so, Buddie sex scenes could be in the cards as both actors have had on-screen sex scenes previously.

Pros: Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and JLH are bigger names and they presumably get to not get naked on screen or simulate sex scenes if they don't want to. Aisha Hinds as a (criminally) smaller name wouldn't have had that kind of leverage in season 1, nor would Ryan Guzman in season 2? And Oliver Stark knew what he was signing up to to play a self-diagnosed "sex addict" so.

Cons: This is absolute, complete conjecture. I have zero idea what each of their comfort levels with sex scenes are or how that might relate to the writing/direction of their characters.

Theory #4 (Buddie wins 🔥): Stable canon relationships kill sex. Fox dramas use sex only pre-maritally to build relationships and the network or the showrunners/writers decide it's not as important once characters are in stable relationships/married. If so, we will get Buddie sex scenes as their canon relationship develops.

Pros: The Resident couple did get married post-season 2 I think? Athena stopped having onscreen sex after she married Bobby. Hen had sex but out of her marriage.

Cons: That's dumb, let married people bone. And we technically do have a Madney sex scene, tame as it was (but maybe they straddle of the line of stable but pre-marital???). Also if sex = building relationship, EddieAna have been excluded from that formula oops 😌

Theory #5 (Buddie wins 🔥): We're overthinking all of this. There hasn't been sex scenes past season 2 because the stories haven't called for it but when it does, such as the start of a new relationship, then we'll get some!

Pros: We haven't had any "new" relationships other than EddieAna since season 2 and their lack of intimacy is a glaring reminder they aren't well suited - they're not boning for plot reasons. While not strictly meeting the aforementioned definition of a "sex scene", we could use Albert coming out of Veronica's shower as a use of sex-as-relationship-building.

Cons: That's dumb, let married people bone, the sequel. Especially since HenRen is criminally neglected in terms of development and could use a fun playful sex scene.

So what have we learned?

Should Buddie go canon, 3 theories indicate we'd get some sex scenes for them, and only 2 say we wouldn't. The odds are in our favour. 🤡

I will do literally anything to procrastinate writing this damn fic that's been tormenting me for weeks. Please someone, anybody...send help...

I would like to see Enzo and TK's baby brother, they should definitely visit Austin so that Enzo can see Carlos. And I am not opposed to seeing Carlos holding a baby.

House hunting and an actual date for Tarlos. I need to see them cutely lof heads over different decor tastes.

Please please let us see Grace's pregnancy and everyone just excited to meet the baby and pampering her and she getting annoyed (affectionately of course) since she likes to do things herself.

Owen's saviour complex needs to fall, I want to see him be the one to actually ask for help and take responsibility for his actions/words and they actively show him make things better. Especially with TK.

I want to see more of Carlos outside of Tarlos and the 126. Give me Carlos bantering with Mitchell, actually doing his job (I get many people might not want the whole cop propaganda but Carlos is a cop and I would love to see him actually do his job), Carlos having siblings, lunch at Tia Lucy's and MORE ANDREA!!

If I don't see TK losing his mind over a hurt Carlos and going Paramedic!TK on him, I will never be satisfied with season 3. They can keep it.

Balanced screentime pleaseeeeee, especially with the addition of Nancy.

A Paul storyline that is not centered around his sexual orientation. Let him have a whole storyline based on him doing his thing and being badass and kind.

jesus christ owen's hero complex has to take a hit. again, there is an opportunity with the 9/11 ep but i have zero faith that the writers will take it.

do you think the writers take bribes because i will pay for paramedic tk going nuts over a hurt carlos. bonus points actually if it's just a minor injury because i want that softness and exasperated carlos we get in fics of that nature.

the problem is, now that nancy has been added as a main (which i am ecstatic about) there's more characters to share the screen time between and they were bad enough at that anyway. that being said, i feel like s2 did show improvement and, hopefully, now that there's going to be 18 episodes, s3 will be even better on this front.

yeah we need a paul episode that's not focused on him being trans. however, brian did consult with the writers on the last paul episode, so if they do decide to do more, i have faith that brian, at least, will make sure it's done properly

I just want to say yes to everything you wrote in the tags about the crossover. I only mentioned Carlos because the Buddie fandom seems to be really excited about TK and Carlos being there to validate their ship. I wasn't overlooking Grace and Tommy and I'm glad you mentioned them. I will be pissed if Tommy, Grace and Carlos don't get their own storyline back in Austin and it better not be just them watching news footage on the TV. All three deserve better.

On one hand, it was so great to see everyone so excited about the crossover confirmation yesterday - it’s been a long hiatus with very little spirited discussion about this show, and I’ve truly missed that!

On the other hand, I just 10/10 could not relate. Literally, here’s a visual representation of my face as I scrolled through all of the tags yesterday: 😬

(I’m going to put my initial concerns under the cut in case people want to avoid that kind of discussion - I’m really not here to rain on anyone’s parade...)

I will admit that a crossover is never something I’ve wanted. I’ve watched a lot of crossovers for other shows and they are almost never worth the screen-time that they take up, especially when that screen-time is already so limited and unfairly allotted to cast members. While it’s exciting to see fan-favorite characters interacting, when the shows are set so far apart, it’s not like we’ll be seeing important relationships develop that can actually be explored well in the future beyond a random line thrown out here or there. Sure, scenes with TK and Buck seem fun and enjoyable, but I’m here for the development of the characters and relationships that I love, many of whom already suffer from slighted storytelling. If I wanted to see characters from different shows interact, I’d read fanfic about it. (Spoiler: I don’t do that.)

And yeah, the minute that I realized that the 126 was most likely in California to fight wildfires, my heart absolutely sank. Carlos definitely won’t be there. There will be little-to-no Tarlos in the episode. Grace definitely won’t be there, and probably very little Grace/Judd. It would be so easy to just cut them from this episode entirely, and if the Lone Star writers have made one thing clear throughout season 1, they like to take the easy way out. Like, I get that as the sole cop on the show, Carlos is an outlier and easy to get rid of when it’s convenient, but that’s bullshit. A good writer would find ways to incorporate him into scenes and moments, not just be like “we don’t need him” and then CUT HIM FROM 20% OF THE SEASON and give him scraps of screen time in episodes that he does appear in. 

And like I said in my tags, I really only have this problem because Carlos was the only character to be cut from episodes in season 1. If they were to say “well we have a lot of main characters and can only focus on a few at a time, so everyone gets to be in 9/10 episodes,” that would make me feel better. I could accept that. But that’s not what’s been happening on this show, and it’s still a concern I have for future seasons. (God, please let me be wrong, I would love to be wrong.)

(And like, how does this all really serve the characters and world-building of Lone Star? This episode already feels like it’s entirely for the benefit of the original show and while I like that show well-enough, I’m not happy that Lone Star’s budget and screen-time is being sucked into a 2-hour wildfire adventure. Tell me you can imagine, at some point in the future, the entire 118 crew coming to Austin for an episode. That would seem pretty ridiculous, I think - so I’m just not seeing a balance here. It seems to me like this episode serves 911 more than anything, ESPECIALLY if Lone Star characters get cut completely to make it happen.) 

While I would HOPE that the writers will write material for Carlos, Grace, and Tommy, I’m not holding my breath. I’m seeing the following ways this episode will be written:

LIKELY: No Austin scenes at all. The 126 arrive in California at the end of the 911 episode, and then spend their entire episode in LA.

POSSIBLE: If they do show Austin, it might be when the crew returns home at the very end - maybe we’ll see Carlos and Grace greeting their partners as part of a classic episode-ending montage sequence.

POSSIBLE: Maybe we’ll get a phone call between characters in Austin and LA. Or, more likely, we’ll get reference to phone calls having been made, but we won’t actually see them. 

I WON’T HOLD MY BREATH: The writers divide the episode’s screen time between LA and Austin, showing the 126 working with the 118 while Carlos + Grace + Tommy deal with emergencies back in Austin. Maybe, even, a scene between all of them or at least between Grace and Carlos - IMAGINE THEM BONDING OVER MISSING THEIR MEN, IT PRACTICALLY WRITES ITSELF (if this doesn’t happen, I’m definitely writing the scene anyway, watch me)

(To end this on a more positive note, I am so beyond excited that we’re getting Carlos’s backstory this season. Whether it’s a “Begins” episode or just something that comes up throughout the episodes, I am here for it! Even if it goes against all of my headcanons, I’m so fucking happy that Rafa is getting a chance to explore his character more. He is so damn talented, and it’s what he deserves.)

AND AS A FINAL THING: I can tell you right now, I have never, for one moment of my life, wanted “Buddie” and Tarlos to interact with one another, especially not so that Tarlos could be used to validate a fan ship. I have seen some truly vile comments about Tarlos from Buddie shippers (not really on Tumblr, but elsewhere) and I really would prefer if they have nothing to do with each other ever. (And yes, if you’re a person who says “Tarlos only exists so that the writers don’t have to make Buddie canon,” you are homophobic and not an ally. Don’t invalidate actual queer representation/characters, ONE OF WHOM IS PLAYED BY AN OUT GAY ACTOR, just because the writers won’t make your perceived ship happen - that’s disgusting and I do take offense to it.)

“So, how are we going to tell the others?” TK asked late the next morning, popping a blueberry into his mouth as he kicked his feet back and forth a bit.

It had taken no time at all for him to find his new favorite place in the kitchen to sit and watch his man. He took full advantage of their counter being L-shaped, slouching into the corner it made. That way, he was close enough to the sink to pull Carlos over whenever the man needed to clean a knife or wash his hands, and also sat right next to where Carlos prepared some of the ingredients.

Not that he was stealing them or anything…

Munching on another blueberry, he took in Carlos’ grin, letting it warm him as his man looked right at him.

“Have they been bugging you as well?”

“Only all the time,” TK replied with a laugh, reaching for a cut strawberry next. “Nancy was just about to murder me, she wanted to know the tea so badly.”

“Did you not tell her?”

Carlos’ genuine surprise struck him but TK still tried for a smile. “How could I have told her about making the biggest mistake of my life? It was too painful to think about, let alone talk about…” He had to swallow when his voice gave out, all these emotions bubbling up inside of him again. 

He heard Carlos put the whisk down, leaving the pancake batter behind as he stepped right into the V of TK’s legs, kissing him deep and long and thoroughly. Humming into the kiss, TK let it chase away the dark mood. No matter how much they had kissed and touched and whispered reassurances over the past twenty hours or so, there could never be enough of it, at least not in TK’s opinion.

They had followed his plan the previous night, eating a light midnight snack right at this very counter he was sitting on now. After, they had snuggled up on the couch but for the life of him, TK wouldn’t be able to say what they had watched. Because the moment he had been back in Carlos’ arms, they had been kissing until they had fallen asleep.

The morning had started as planned as well, their couch proven to be an excellent place for some mind-blowing sex. And now, it was pancake time…

“You taste fruity,” Carlos murmured against his lips, leaving one, two, three more pecks before leaning back just far enough to grin at TK. “Do I need to start putting out fake ingredients again for you to ‘steal’? So there’s enough left for our actual food?”

TK couldn’t help the silly wide grin that spread over his face as he slung his arms over Carlos’ shoulders, holding him close. “Yes, please do,” he begged. “I’ve missed that.” Pulling him in, he pressed kisses along Carlos’ jaw and down his neck as he whispered. “I’ve missed you cooking for me, I’ve missed your food and how well you know me, how you always know just what to put out to distract me. I’ve missed all these little moments we create, with just us…” Pulling back, he looked Carlos deep in his eyes. “I’ve missed you. I’ve missed us.”

Carlos’ hands were beneath his shirt before their lips even connected again.

“I’ve missed you, too,” Carlos whispered in between kisses – and TK was eternally grateful that Carlos hadn’t gotten yet to start the stove.

Carlos doesn’t notice something’s wrong until the first real date he shares with TK. Up to that moment, they've seen each other fleetingly during calls, the sassy firefighter transfer from New York City catching his eye and his breath every single time. It becomes so evident that Carlos is infatuated by TK Strand that even Mitchell points it out one night when they're both out having drinks with Michelle. Carlos asking TK to dance was a given; him asking TK on a date was a dream.

Somehow, in between picking at the nachos they've ordered and assassinating the board with their missing darts, TK's grown more and more comfortable with him. He’s even complained to Carlos about Judd Ryder — as if Cowboy Judd was anything but a good man with a misplaced sense of duty. Carlos has thought that everything was going down smoothly, that maybe this time he might get lucky enough to steal a kiss and maybe more — although he isn’t averse to just holding hands. Something in his gut tells him that TK is worth every single second of every single day, and Carlos has always been a fighter. This time, he's convinced he will get at least onto the path to a happy ending.

They finish their game — Carlos letting TK win surreptitiously — and he moves to the bar to order another round of drinks. When he comes back with an iced tea for TK and a Coke for him, he finds the firefighter deep in thought as he stares at the screen of his cell phone.

"Everything alright, TK?" he questions easily, dropping the two glasses carefully on the table they've secured. He watches as TK flinches slightly and quickly ushers the device back into his pocket.

"Yeah," he says faintly. "Everything’s peachy. But I'm parched," he quickly changes subjects as he reaches for the tea and lifts it to his lips. Carlos lets the subject die, but he still watches closely for any sign of distress during the rest of their date.

When it’s time to drive TK safely home like the Southern gentleman his mama raised, Carlos guides him outside and back to the Camaro. Once they're away from privy eyes, Carlos decides to take a leap of faith and slowly he reaches out, inch by inch, his pinky almost touching TK’s skin. When he doesn’t see any bad reaction from TK, he reaches out further and covers TK’s palm with his own hand, ready to intertwine their fingers.

To say TK has a knee-jerk reaction is to fall short on the definition.

TK jumps a few feet away from Carlos when their hands touch, and he looks up at Carlos with a look that reminds him of a deer caught in headlights. He mutters an apology, rubbing his hands together as though trying to get rid of the memory of Carlos touching him — Carlos isn’t sure about what hurts the most, whether it’s the lack of response in the beginning or the overt rejection to his pretty well-founded desire to tighten the relationships between firefighters and police officers.

TK slides into the car in complete silence, and the drive back to the place he shares with his father is a complete nightmare for Carlos. TK spends most of the time pointedly looking out the window, and the rest staring at his hands as though he'd want to cut them off. Carlos doesn’t even have the time to kill the engine before the firefighter is out of the car, mumbling a suffocated thank you for tonight with a fake smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.

Carlos remains on the driveway for a few more minutes, trying to figure out where exactly this leaves them, but he gives up when he realizes this isn’t a fight he wants to enter head-first. Then, with a defeated sigh, he starts the engine once again and joins the traffic.

He finds no reason whatsoever as to why TK has turned from the cool kid Carlos needs in his life to the shell of a person in the time span of a date. And that's what prevents him from sleeping properly that night.
