Hello everyone! Finally update, after a long time. The last thing I want to do is leave this fic unfinished, and to be honest I didn't realize like three months had passed in all that time.

I said before that I wrote some of the chapters, and when I re-read the chapters I wrote, there were parts I didn't like. So I started editing the chapter for the next update and eventually rewrote the entire chapter... I'd like to think this is normal and a good thing, because I think all this time has passed is because I've been improving my writing style.

There may be this much space between future updates, because in this state of the chapter, I have accelerated the events a little more, so I may have to rewrite entire chapters in my drafts. Anyway, I talked too much, I hope you enjoy the chapter!

What Happened There? Chap. 5 : Nightmare

While the headache was more bearable, it didn't make the wait any easier.

And as time went on, he found more and more things to think about and worry about.

International Rescue had been stopped, according to official reports. And after that, the media focused more on accusetion.

They were accusing her of killing innocent people, and Scott had personally investigated these people.

They were all people with strong families.

Mr. Smith's company was designing protective equipment for most defense units, especially the GDF.

Ms. Rodriguez's husband came from a political family.

And... Mr. Stewart's company, on the other hand, was a multi-faceted company such as all kinds of scientific and experimental research and R&D studies.

All this was like a bomb ready to explode, and he was afraid that his family would end up in the center.

And he didn't know what to do.

All he wanted was to wake up from this terrible nightmare as soon as possible. Unfortunately, what they experienced was too real to be a nightmare.

And his mind immediately returned to the present reality; his sister had been in surgery for hours.

He kept telling himself that she would be okay, but he needed someone walking out that door and tell him that.

When finally someone in an operating room gown came out the door, he only realized he was holding his breath when his chest felt tight...

He had to do virtual research to understand some terms... And every word he had learned had shown that she was far from good.

So John had understood why they taking her to HDU yesterday, and he wasn't surprised to hear that she had to stay in there for one more night.

But he wanted to hear that she was fine...

Still, he had to find out what had happened there.

After sending Casey the necessary documents, he continued his research.

But the GDF and local authorities had blocked his access to the documents, so he couldn't find much.

And even worse, it was the topics in the news.

"...an International Rescue personnel was thought to have been injured, but the official statement has yet to come..."

"Is International Rescue still reliable and unbiased?"

"Why are the Tracys quiet?"

"There was no new statement from the authorities, and it is still unknown what happened there."

And he was really scared that someone would go too far and explain what happened there.

While they didn't welcome Casey's arrival on the first day, he knew that the finds had not been released to the media thanks to Casey, and he was grateful for that.

Just- ...It was too much...

Blood. Too much blood.

He had blood on his hands.

There was blood everywhere.

Kay's blood.

"Kay? Kay, hun please-"

"Virgil..?"

...

"Virgil? Virgil, it's okay, it was just a dream."

Blue eyes. John.

"I-" A quick breath. And another.

It was a nightmare far from a dream.

He clasped his hands to his face.

"Virgil?"

She will be fine. She would be angry with him for not sleeping.

"Just a bad nightmare."

A mocking breath. "No. First time I find you sleeping and then you-"

"Just a nightmare, John." He wasn't there. He couldn't understand him. "Any progress?"

His eyes examined him.

"Yeah. She was extubated this morning. If her condition remains stable, they will remove her from HDU."

It wasn't that simple. Still, this wasn't the first time doctors said positive things to patients' relatives.

"This is a good thing. Actually, this is great news."

He really needed her to be okay, seeing her covered in blood every time he closed his eyes took him back to that moment.

"She's strong, Virgil. She's going to kick our ass when she wakes up and finds out we're worried about her."

He couldn't help but smile. He would do anything for this to happen.

"Any news from GDF?"

His eyes narrowed at the question.

"Colonel Casey doesn't say anything. Penny is quieter than usual on this one."

Silence was not good.

"All this has to have a logical explanation, John."

GDF knew Kayo. She was with the GDF until she became part of International Rescue.

So they knew what they were accusing her of.

And this scared him even more.

When Kay woke up, she would be facing accusations. They had already suspended International Rescue.

They had managed to take the entire family out of the equation in one go.

"The only explanation I know is that she didn't do all this. But... she still has herself to blame, Virgil."

Just like the man in front of him...

When would he realize that it wasn't his fault that he sent Kay there?

And Kay was going to blame herself for damn things he couldn't even think of.

Breathing in thought, he closed his eyes and immediately opened them again when he saw those moments again.

"How long did you sleep before Virgil woke up from the nightmare? Oh wait wrong question- when was the last time you actually slept?"

He had stopped counting how long he hadn't been able to sleep.

"I'm fine."

When he looked at him with that know-it-all look, he knew he didn't believe him.

"John. Can you look into my eyes and tell me that you are having a sound and peaceful sleep?"

This was the truth no one wanted to say, and John took a step back.

"I want to go to the hospital, now." He came eye to eye with worried eyes. "It's fine, John. Let's go."

"Grandma doesn't let anyone leave the hotel until everyone has eaten something. Actually, the reason I came here was to let you know about this."

He honestly didn't think he could eat anything right now.

"I am not hungry."

"Virgil, she's just as determined as yesterday, she even feeds pancakes and cookies to the guards."

It was Grandma who forced everyone out of the hospital yesterday.

Virgil had refused with all his might, but a war with a determined Grandma was a war over before it even began...

His eyes must have been involuntarily resigned, because John's face relaxed.

"Everyone's in the common room in the suite, and Grandma ordered more things than anyone could finish."

Literally the idea of any food was enough to make him feel nauseous, but he shook his head to be left alone.

"You may want to wash your face before going to the breakfast bro, you can't fool anyone like this." He said, pointing to his face with his hands.

As John turned and left the room, he put his hands over his face again.

He couldn't forget those moments.

He needed her to be okay. They all needed her to be okay.

With nearly every limb aching, he struggled to stand up and made his way towards the bathroom.

When he looked at his face in the mirror, he looked truly awful.

When he touched his face, his beard that he didn't care about and his darkened under eyes made him look tired.

His hair was a symbol of complete mess, and he couldn't even fool himself in this state.

He noticed shaving lotion, razors and hair gel on the counter next to the sink.

He made a mental note to thank his brother for this and started looking in the mirror at the shower head behind him.

He had to waste time with all this stuff anyway, and a quick shower wouldn't hurt either.

He wanted to leave as quickly as possible, but he didn't want anyone else to ask him if he was okay.

They were already worried enough about one person, there was no need another person.

No one had sat at the breakfast table voluntarily. Even the Grandma was obviously here just to make sure everyone had eaten.

They hadn't been able to have breakfast for a long time when the family was this crowded -they were busy at work and no one was blaming anyone- they could almost never be together except for special occasions.

He couldn't even remember the last time they all did an activity together, but he was sure everyone was happy and laughing.

But this time it was one of the quietest and most tense breakfast tables he sat at.

The reason why he seemed like a positive person on the outside was simply because he didn't want to think worse about what happened.

It literally wasn't working, because Gordon was afraid...

He was afraid of losing someone he loved like his sister, he was afraid for his family because, God knows, they had been through enough already.

Or maybe they hadn't, because this whole thing was a complete nightmare.

It was a nightmare he really wanted to wake up from.

When the owner of the other part of her worry walked in with a napkin on his cheek that was turning red, the atmosphere became even more tense.

His effort had to be appreciated, but he still didn't look any better than yesterday. He had taken a shower and even shaved, the napkin on his cheek turning red confirmed this.

But even though his hair was gelled, he looked very messy, his under eyes were more visible than the last time he saw him, and he looked pretty grumpy.

Normally, a grumpy Virgil would make his day, but in their current situation, along with the shaving cut on his cheek, he was making his even more worried.

It probably didn't surprise anyone that he turned to the coffee machine as soon as he arrived.

When he sat at the table with a large mug in one hand and looked at the food on the table, he took a sip of coffee and left it on the table.

There were lines on his face that showed he didn't like something and he was getting ready to get up from the table.

"Virgil, honey, you should eat something."

He glanced anxiously at the items on the table and swallowed.

"I am not hungry, Grandma."

Still, Grandma stood up and put something on his plate.

"Let me get something for your cheek, while you eat these."

Virgil didn't argue this time. Still, he swallowed hard and looked at the food on his plate, then forced something into his fork and brought it to his mouth.

He was too focused on his task to notice everyone in the room staring at him, but after a few seconds he stopped.

He swallowed with real effort and quickly pushed his chair back.

"I really don't think my stomach can handle anything..."

At least he didn't tell one of those ridiculous lies about not being hungry.

Just as he was about to get up, when the Grandma entered with a small medical kit in her hand, he froze like a child caught stealing cookies.

Both of their eyebrows immediately furrowed, but one with pure concern and the other with anger.

"Virgil-"

"No, I can't do this shit, not when she's in the hospital and someone's trying to accuse her. I found her and-"

"Virg-"

"Her heart stopped!" There were unspoken words hidden beneath his anger, he could tell. "You weren't even there- I don't even have to tell you anything!"

The coffee cup was dropped harshly on the table, and he stood up rather harshly.

Everyone, including Grandma, could only watch as Virgil angrily walked into the room.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

The sound of her steady heartbeat was all he could focus on. Because it was the only thing that can stop that steady beep sound in his head.

When they took her to the regular room, he didn't give anyone a chance to argue. He would stay with her for the night. End of discussion.

It was already past midnight and several nurses and doctors had checked on her condition and replenished her medications, a few hours ago.

He had forced the doctors to be honest with him because they were all telling the same story about how everything would be okay.

They said she was lucky.

He had learned that he was right about one of the knives hitting her artery, and if the knife there had moved even a few inches further, she might have bled to death.

She was lucky the knife wasn't pulled back out.

The real reason there was blood everywhere was the stab wound in her liver.

Indeed, they said if she had arrived at the hospital a few minutes later there would have been nothing that could have been done.

They thought she hit her head pretty hard on something and they said she was lucky there was no fracture or crack in her temporal bone.

The rest of her wounds looked like defensive wounds, with the cut on her right shoulder, she had bruises in many places.

Of course, they said it in a much gentler and less scary way, but it wasn't difficult for Virgil to fill in the space between the words.

And in this situation, luck was a relative concept because, in his opinion, they were lucky not to lose her.

When the rhythm of the regular beeping began to accelerate, her full attention shifted to the figure on the bed.

"Kay?"

He leaned a little closer to her, watching her frown in the pale light coming from the window.

He held his breath as her eyes glistened with unshed tears.

One of his hands immediately slid to her cheek, and he held himself back as the other moved forward to hold her hand.

The side where she was injured the most was her right side, and the last thing he wanted was to hurt her more.

What was he thinking as he stood this side?

Paying attention to her injured shoulder, he positioned his other hand for support on the bed.

"Kay? Honey, It's okay."

Even through all the signs of pain, he had seen the recognition in her eyes, if only for a few seconds.

She closed her eyes and her heart rhythm was starting to return.

"V- Vir-"

"Hey just breathe, Kay." His hand was gently wiping the tears from her cheek.

Her eyes quickly closed again and a broken sound escaped her.

Damn...

"Kay. I- I'll find someone for some more painkillers, okay?"

"N-no-" Her voice was cracking and it was obvious that even speaking hurt her.

She didn't have to suffer, so he was preparing to politely object. And suddenly he felt warmth on the wrist of the hand holding her cheek.

Tears began to flow down her cheeks as her shaky hand tried to find his hand.

She had said his name in a voice so delicate that if he wasn't nearby to her, Virgil would have thought it was another moan of pain.

"S-s-t'ay?"

"Of- of course."

Of course.

He quickly pressed the call button at the head of the bed several times.

He didn't need to go for that.

"I'm not going anywhere, Kay."

He gently held her shaking hand and squeezed it reassuringly.

Her eyes were closing again as her face took on a more peaceful expression.

"Tha- T-han'k-s..."

There was no need for her to thank him, because there was nowhere else he wanted to be right now.

"It's okay. I'm not going anywhere."

When her face began to take on a painless expression, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"I'm not going anywhere, Kay."

He probably called the nurses and doctors who were rushing to this room in vain, but at least she was awake, if only for a few minutes.

most hits: Dear Ecthelion (letters are hard to write in your head), with 336! I don't check my stats very often so that's crazy to me. It's probably because it's the only one I have written for LotR, not just the Silmarilion lol. It was my second? I think? Work I posted to be longer than 2000 words. I wrote it for SecretlyThranduil for TSS21 and I'm still pretty proud of it and how it got me thinking about Glorfindel, Ecthelion, and Erestor. I didn't actually get the chance to use most of the headcanons I came up with...

most kudos: Also Dear Ecthelion lol, for the suspected same reason as above. Behind it is I will go as seems good to me which is the start to an "Aredhel becomes a ghost and casually haunts Gondolin" AU that I have written very little about but continuously gives me brainworms. I am very very proud of the style of this one, I wrote it for Tolkien Gen Week 21 and it has haunted (ha) me ever since.

most comments: Remember, All, Listen, All, easily. Written for TRSB last year, my only (completed) multi-chap, and the 2nd longest. Far and away the fic I am proudest of. Perfectly suited to my interests, just enough of a challenge to test me, self-indulgent worldbuilding details, some light conlanging, and absolutely GORGEOUS prompt art by catadromously. Sticking exclusively to Dior's perspective of his fairy-tale parents was really fun and I think gave a pretty unique flavor, and I've been so, so, so gratified with all the positive feedback saying that they could feel and believe the relationships. If you only read/kudos/comment on one of these, this is the one I recommend.

most bookmarks: Calómë (dusk-light), a prompt fill for jaz-the-bard. Writing this was like polishing away a stone to reveal the heart of how I want to characterize Maeglin. Still working on how/if this fits into my personal Arda, and I know the Gondolin OT3 isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I did a lot in here that I'm very happy with, and it took me so long to work out a variation on both Lomion and Maeglin that I was pleased with, didn't have Implications, was gender neutral, and also translated easily and cleanly into both Sindarin and Quenya, so I'm definitely keeping Calómë.

most words: The Goddess and the Weaver, beating out Remember, All by a cool 600. Ironically, this is my other (unfinished) multi-chap. Two-shot? The second half is quietly languishing in my drafts but it is Not forgotten, and will be written if nothing else than for the sake of 3 (three) scenes that I have in extreme clarity in my head. I have So many Miriel thoughts about her and her relationships to life and Vairë and Finwë and Indis and her son... There is a Story behind this fic, which I don't have the space for here but is detailed in the author's note at the beginning, but even though it has fought me every step of the way I am content to let it rest now as is for a while before battling again. Also I did some funky formatting for Vairë's speech and pronouns which was a lot of work but very very cool imo.

least words: This is a Forest, at 547. I usually post short one-shots because I know that I can get them done even when I have almost no inspiration or energy, but this is short even for me. Written for a class as fanfic with the serial numbers filed off and posted in its natural habitat, this is purely self indulgent Doriath As Fey Eldritch Horror Entity With Beren Dealing purple prose. Is it my best technical work? No, but I had so much fun with it, and I think I got across the vibes I wanted to. Also Quick shout outs to the least word runner-ups: A Cruel Forest (630) which is the same Doriath As Entity premise but with a completely different style and Elured and Elurin as Eldritch Maiarin Entities Twisted, and the prince is dead (661) in which Fingon has an existential crisis about his name and the kingship after his father rides out to face Morgoth. Both also written for Gen Week 21. I had so much time that year.

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

Writing for me is pretty much an all or nothing thing. It's either all I want to do/can think about or I go months on end without the urge at all. Kind of like playing The Sims! Anyway, when I do have the urge to write (ding dong, I'm currently hyperfixated on a multi-chap FIyeraba WIP) I sit at my computer immediately when I get home and get all psyched. But then I can't jump straight into writing, I have to warm up a little, so why not go on tumblr for a bit? Okay I pulled myself away from tumblr, better stalk the Wicked FFnet tag for awhile and maybe read somethings. Cool, now right. No maybe I'll read my old writing. Or I'll watch source material that I'm basing information off of. Or I'll play solitaire. By then it's like 2 and a half hours later and I finally get to work on my WIP and get super into it but 45 minutes later I either have to go to work or eat dinner or go to bed and then I get really pissed because "I never have any time to really write!".

That mess is why it's cursed.

5. Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true?

It's not really a superstition, but I'm very much of the mind that I won't post a chapter fic until it is 100% done and revised to perfection (which of course won't exist). I can't post chapter by chapter because I get too paranoid that I'll want to change things and it's hard for me to release control. Also, I do let my husband read my fanfiction (which he wants to, it's very sweet) but I don't let him or ANYONE read it until it's revised to my liking. Nobody lays eyes on my unfinished drafts--to vulnerable!

9. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know

So I've never seen a ghost but I really wanna believe. I think it's just more fun to believe they're real. I kind of want to see one and kind of don't. I guess I'm not 100% convinced they're real but also not 100% of the mind that they're not. Plus, I love love love spooky things and scary movies and haunted places and all of that. So ghosties are cool in my book. Hoping (and not hoping) to see some shit when I stay in a haunted winery/inn this October for my anniversary!

Fandoms You Write For: Dragon Age (all of it), Beetlejuice, Fullmetal Alchemist, and some other things I haven’t touched in a very long time, like Harry Potter.

Where You Post: Ao3 and FFN, more the former than the latter nowadays

Most Popular One-Shot: For years it was Ron’s Soliloquy, which was one of my earliest Harry Potter fics. Since I don’t often write one-shots, that’s probably still the answer.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Forever and always it will probably be Flowers of Antimony, the first part of my FMA series. Going just by the AO3 stats, it’s got the most hits and the most kudos of anything I’ve posted there, and that’s not even taking into account the numbers from FFN, where it appeared first. On AO3 it’s getting close to 10,000 hits. The whole series, and that installment in particular, is on so many people’s fic recs lists that it’s truly humbling.

Favorite Story You Wrote: I have a hard time with this, because I love all of my weird little babies in their weird little ways. I will say that I firmly believe the funniest thing I’ve ever written is I Must Be Going, from the Skyhold Academy Yearbook series, because mashing up Dragon Age and The Princess Bride with Varric as the narrator honestly does require the “don’t drink anything while reading” warning we tacked on the opening.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: Uh. All of them? Probably I was most nervous about either Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium, because I wasn’t sure anybody was going to care about Inquisitor Bethany Hawke or my ideas about her, or Cinderjuice, because I wasn’t sure too many people even remembered the old Beetlejuice cartoon, much less could appreciate my nonsensical take on it. But rest assured that I am always anxious when I post.

How Do You Choose Your Titles: It varies, but with the multi-chaps at least, I try to come up with some kind of theme. For instance, in the Twice Upon an Age series, all the chapter titles are lines from the Chant of Light. In Flowers of Antimony, they’re all alchemy terms. I’ve also used song lyrics, lines of dialogue, and terrible puns. As for the story titles, that tends to be a crapshoot.

Do You Outline: I occasionally try to outline, and it almost never works. There’s a reason that I’m mentioned by name on the TV Tropes page for I Just Write the Thing.

Complete: I’ve lost count, truthfully. I am pleased to say that most of my works are finished, but my unfinished ones haunt me.

In-Progress: DA: Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium (that one’s just me) and Bright Jewels, Chained City (with @auroraborealia in the Skyhold Academy universe). Beetlejuice: Bug Princess and the Seven Months. FMA: Chronology.

Coming Soon: I'm only waiting until Beyond Heroes is finished before I get back to the Twiceverse, because Andrea - my bff for whom the series is being written - was promised a sequel and I need to cover the DLC. We also have some more Skyhold Academy nonsense planned.

Do You Accept Prompts: I’m open to them, but I usually downplay the option by saying that I’m not good at it. The truth is that I don’t generally offer because I don’t expect anyone to take me up on it, just like when I reblog ask memes, and it’s easier to pretend I suck at prompts than to accept that people might not want me to write for them anyway.

Wow, that went a little darker than I expected.

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: I’m looking forward to the Twice sequel, I really am. I have lots of silliness planned amid the drama.

Just read 1 of your baby bc fics on ao3 (I'm FrisianWanderer on ao3), loved it, and saw that this is your tumblr :D I just started watching Gotham (only 1 more ep to go fml, it's just too good) and I love baby batcat! They are so adorable and awesome together (and apart, but esp together) and now I have this fangirl thirst for more! So I was wondering if you have any fic recs for me and authors/tumblrs I need to check out? You also take prompts right? I may have some for you :) xx

Hi! So this ask is suuuuper old, especially because this blog has been on something of a hiatus as of late. Thank you for reading my fic! I’m really glad you enjoyed it!

I also love Baby Batcat (what isn’t to love?) as well as just Batcat in general. As I said, this ask has been sitting for a while, and you might have already read some of my recommendations, (especially if you did what I did and combed through every inch of Ao3) but here goes!:

Breathe, by canardroublard: a cute little oneshot I really enjoyed it. Very fluffy.

I was getting warm, but now I’m feeling colder, by dfriendly: features an older Selina and Bruce, I adore this. Selina’s characterization is spot on, and the actual writing is beautiful.

patch job, by palepinklipstick: very short, under 500 words, but very well written. Almost like a character study of Selina, and I really loved it.

sweet dream nothings, by palepinklipstick: longer than the last, but still rather short. A cute little oneshot that I think is really well written and characterized.

New Beginnings, by AlwaysInSonder: a little collection of oneshots I really adore. The writing is fantastic, really evocative, and I love the interactions between Selina and Bruce.

The Wendigo and the Lionheart, by shadychef (Janechef): So this is the only unfinished fic I’m recommending in this ask, and I think it still gets sporadically updated (the last was in February of this year) and as much as it pains me to recommend unfinished fic without regular updates, this story is worth it. I went into it not really knowing what to expect, but I got hooked very quickly and the actual story is great. I love the plot, characterization, writing style, everything. It’s a bit of a thriller, and the actual plot is a bit fucked up, but it’s really interesting. I love writers in superhero fandoms who come up with original villains, and the sheer amount of research, work, time, and effort I know as a writer must’ve gone into chapter seven blows me away. Go read this right now.

AhhhHHHHHHH don’t make me cry. But ty for the tag!!! (We need another writing + pizza day soon!!!!! One of these days I’m gonna be able to start posting my new thing…)

1. Book of Retribution - Multi-chapter, finished! BoR is something I spent literal years on, and it’s definitely near and dear to my heart for a few reasons…First of all, it was only supposed to be a 5 sentence prompt fill. That did not happen. Also, it was really my first serious foray into writing horror for the sake of horror, and not just psychological thrill stuff. And now that I’m working on another big horror project, I can’t help but feel that this is what got me on that track!!! It’s a Kingdom Hearts/Silent Hill crossover (I promise it makes sense, I promise), but you don’t need to be familiar with SH’s canon to understand it, if you’re interested in a long, spooky multi-chap!

2. Precocious - One shot, finished! Look, I’ve been in the KH fandom since ‘07, when things were rough, but I only just recently realized I had this headcanon. I’m actually planning (read: hoping and considering) a longer fic in the future with this general through-line.

3. Soft Reset - Multi-chapter, unfinished for now!! SR is a NaNoWriMo project from a few years ago (before I started BoR!). It’s a Silent Hill 2 fic that focuses on James and the town itself. I’ve probably played through SH2 more than any other game I own, and when you replay it enough, you…well, you notice some weird things. This is my take on why some of those things happen. Fair warning: This is a WIP, and it’s been gathering dust for a while…but not forgotten! I have a lot of it written, but with BoR (and my new project), it’s just been sitting on the back burner for a bit. I’m hoping to get back into it once my current fixation (on a completely different horror game) lets up a little ;)

4. This Kingdom Hearts X-Men AU thing without a proper title - One shot, finished, and God help me, I need more of this AU. I don’t remember how this started. Someone mentioned an X-Men AU for KH, and (I’m always a slut for an X-Men AU) I love X-Men. It’s a short little drabble, but please for the love of God, someone else join me in this hell, because I do have a fiery, fiery need for some KH/X-Men bullshit in my life.

5. Another Side, Another Story - One shot, finished! Another AU I’m weak for…one where the Basement Trio is made up of Lexaeus, Zexion, and Xaldin. I love thinking about the dynamics of these three, as well as how terrifying a force they’d be to anyone who got in their way. Another AU that I need a LOT more of in my life.

I have been meaning to ask you: what was your general process for creating the Masterlist? I want to do something like it for another fandom ship I love. I think you've mentioned a spreadsheet? Did you end up reading most of the fics for classification purposes or did you rely on tags? Did you have help? It's a fabulous resource and thank you SO MUCH for doing it.

Thank you, what an excellent ask. And man do I hope you have a lot of free time to read the answer, lol!

I have had help at various times, usually when I’m in a time crunch or feeling overwhelmed. Many folks have helped out, including @lilsherlockian1975, @violetjersey, @rooneykmara and a few others. Whenever I post a desperate “can someone help please” I alway get a response, and I thank everyone who has been able to help (or who offered to but then was unable because hey, I get it - real life, ammiright?)

At first, all I had was the sherlollilists, which was just a way to sort stories by specific tropes. Then I started getting requests for more tropes and lists, so I added to them, and then suddenly folks were asking for much more specific info (i.e., “angsty parentlock fics where Sherlock isn’t the father”, “fluffy Christmas fics with a pregnant Molly and Sherlock is a vampire”, etc.). And there was sooo much cross-referencing to do (having to update multiple lists when a story had multiple tropes, or updating when a story has been completed or moves from “incomplete” to “abandoned/unfinished”, things like that) that I finally decided a more comprehensive document was needed to keep things in order.

So I decided to create a spreadsheet using google sheets, which would be open to anyone to read and comment on (specifically, I was hoping folks would use it to send me comments like “this fic is listed as in progress but it’s now complete” or “hey, this fic should be listed as angst as well as fluff” or even “this one is set during S2 not S3″). This is my Sherlollbrary, and it has a main page for all fics I’ve managed to link, a page for just 2017 fics (which I might delete at some point as we are now in 2018), and a link to fics I call “Unlisted” (i.e., fics that aren’t on any of the tumblr lists).

Although the spreadsheet can’t be reorganized by any users except myself and the folks I’ve allowed administrative access to, it CAN be copied and pasted to a different spreadsheet, so that users can filter things as they want (i.e., put it in order by year, delete all M rated fics, etc.).

With me so far? Here’s the process I now follow, from start to finish, so you can see exactly how much work is involved.

The Process

The first step is finding a story and copying links into a “raw data” spreadsheet for when I have time to actually read things. (Right now, for example, I have 68 stories to add!) It is just a list that looks like this:

I then read/reread/hastily look over/check the tags the stories and add the info needed to make my “Latest and Greatest Sherlollbrary Additions” posts, so it looks like this:

I then create the “Latest & Greatest” post after inserting the links into the story title thusly:

Note that I ONLY include the tropes here that I have created tumblr posts for. The other notes (such as “fluff”, “AU”, etc.) only appear on the preliminary spreadsheet until I transfer them to the Sherlollbrary spreadsheet.

I then copy over the stories into their appropriate sherlollilist in this format, which I’m sure you recognize:

Once the story has been uploaded to tumblr, I then go back to the “raw data” spreadsheet and sort everything into columns per the list below. When I have a sufficient quantity (that is, whenever I feel like it or have time) I then transfer the info to the official Sherlollbrary for everyone to use.

That’s it in a nutshell! I have modified the spreadsheet several times since I started it; for example, instead of just a single date for a multi-chap fic, I now have columns for the year it was originally posted and the year it was completed (or last updated it if it’s been a year or longer since the fic was updated by the author).

The list currently consists of the following columns:

Title

Author (I include the tumblr url and both FF and AO3 names if applicable)

Location (ff.n et, AO3, tumblr, etc.)

Date (year) started

Date (year) completed (N/A for one shots) or last year updated for abandoned/unfinished fics

Story Rating (I stared on ff. net so I use their ratings, K-M)

Whether the story is finished or not (Y, N, U)

Story type (one shot, collection, etc.)

Series in which the story takes place or if it’s a fic set in the future (if unknown or an AU, I just leave it blank)

What universe the story takes place in (CU - canon universe; AU - alternate universe; UA - universe altered, where it’s still the BBC Sherlock universe and time period, but Mary is alive or Sherlock is a werewolf or Molly is a librarian)

6 columns for various tropes/attributes such as Victorian, Fluff, Angst, etc. (I settled on 6 because more than that made the spreadsheet more difficult to navigate)

Whew! Yeah, it’s a labor of love all right (emphasis on the labor at times), but I am very pleased with it and it makes me undescribably giddy when I open up the Sherlollbrary and see that someone else is in there browsing!

As of today, there are 3110+ stories listed in the Sherlollbrary, and I am still adding old ones from my existing trope lists, as well as new ones as the wonderful writers in this fandom keep contributing. I love that my work never seems to be done on this project!

Final Note: I am absolutely fine with anyone using my spreadsheet as a template, but do request respectfully that I be given credit for creating the original.

1. what is your most popular fic by kudos? comments? bookmarks? are they all the same?

kudos Proof Canon AU fake marriage where Bellamy and Clarke must marry to secure an alliance. This one has a lot to do with Clarke helping Bellamy recover from his trauma and learn to believe that he deserves love and happiness. Not slow burn. They get busy right away. And it causes problems.

comments Got You A series of interlinked story prompts set in canon AU after season 3. No second apocalypse. It’s mainly about how Bellamy is helping Clarke recover from her trauma and stop being afraid to love. Slow burn. A bit of angst in there that I think is why the comments are tops. Everyone freaked out. It was awesome.

bookmarks: The Air Is Fine Up Here This is an Ark AU set 5 years after the show, but in a world where The Ark’s air system is fine. It’s the political environment that is destructive. Second children are not illegal they are just shunned. Clarke is a doctor with an illegal clinic in Factory, and she meets Bellamy because he is doing gladiator fights to earn money to support Octavia. It’s pretty plot heavy. It was nominated for a best Ark AU on bellarke fanfiction awards a couple years back, so it was my most popular for a long time, but the others have caught up.

2. do you have a favorite of your fics? if not, do you have one you’re most proud of? why?

Coming Home, which is a modern AU with a divorced Clarke and professor Bellamy, where she comes back to her college town and discovers who she is again surrounded by her friends. So it’s got some themes of the show. I wanted to think about what kind of “apocalypse” would be that devastating in the real world. So I made it this kind of divorce/abuse thing. But it’s not about the divorce, it’s all about the recovery. So it’s not personal at all. (okay it is. although it’s still entirely fictional, not a memoir in the slightest.) I’m also really proud of the bit of humor in this.

4. do you have any fics that got more popularity/attention than you expected? if so what were they?

Contracting and Expanding, this weird little child birth fic that I wrote because I was frustrated that women and girls don’t seem to understand what childbirth is really like. Like it’s this kind of open secret, and it’s so romanticized sometimes. I added a second chapter to wrap it up over a year later. I’ve never really understood why it is one of my most popular one shots.

5. where do you get your ideas/inspiration from? do you have a fic that you feel is particularly unique in that area?

I have a WAY different path to fanfiction than most of you. It wasn’t a thing when I was a kid. There was no internet. I started writing fantasy and science fiction when i was 15, but it was all original because I didn’t know of this concept. And there was certainly no community for it. Nowadays I think writers build their chops with fanfiction, explore, experiment. When I got to fanfiction, I’d already been through that stage and was taking my writing SO SERIOUSLY. Fanfiction let me get the fun back, and lowered the artificially high stakes that I had created in my head. Writing is so psychological and the writing process is basically a writer fighting the demons in their head in order to get words on a page. Fanfiction was like a big FU to my demons, because I was going to enjoy writing again.

Most of my writing inspiration comes out of my history, my reading, my curiosity, my questions. Me. I’ve been such a Fantasy/Scifi geek for so long though, that a lot of it is based on that. Fanfiction, though, allowed me to write general fiction, without the pretension of literary fiction, which going to school for English/Creative Writing had conned me into thinking was the only deserving writing (screw you academia.) Ha. I actually wrote about Clarke as a professor and Bellamy as a student in Academic. Be aware, I was not an academic. I got out of college and started waiting tables so I could be a writer/artist. Ha. Like in The Arkadias/Just Having Fun Clarke/Bellamy povs for the same story. Okay. So my inspiration either comes out my real life or out of my scifi/fantasy reading. Or wish fulfillment and my love of fake marriage tropes ala The Carriage House.

6. do you have a favorite character to write POV for?

honestly it alternates between Bellamy and Clarke. I suppose I might have more from Clarke’s pov. I’ve never checked.

7. what’s your favorite sidepairing to include?

Raven and Wells maybe. I don’t do too many side pairings. I’m more into the platonic friendships.

8. do you have a fic you feel is underrated in comparison to your other fics? or you just wish more people would read?

Maybe Moonshine. Because I turned it into an original novel that I’m still working on and I really like it, but I can’t blame anyone because I left it unfinished it when I decided to adapt it. But it’s like a preview of my novel.

9. what’s something you would go back and change in one of your fics?

I think I did go back and change an Echo ex Bellamy girlfriend to Gina.

Oh wait. I would have made everyone older in The Valley, part 1. It started out as a soulmate HS witches AU, but I tried to explain the sharing skin marks and it got pretty dark and very sexual. It’s the most sexual of all my fics, and I think it’s a little icky that she’s only 18. I like the concept but the HS thing was a mistake. Just like I don’t think I should try for writing smut, I also don’t think I should try for YA fic. I’m just not a YA writer. Or maybe it was the wrong story to try on. I had to drop that story. It went down a path that was more complicated than anticipated.

10. what is your favorite sort of comment to receive on a fic?

It’s kind of cool when people take quotes from the work and talk about what they meant or how they affected them.

11. what are your favorite genres of fic to write? (e.g. modern au, hurt/comfort, fluff, angst, etc.)

oh, sometimes I feel the need for Modern AU fluff ( a lot actually) but my favorite is probably Science Fiction, like not post apocalyptic, but space.

12. what are your favorite tropes to write?

Hands down, fake marriage/dating. Canon AU. Modern AU. Space AU. I’ve got a fake marriage for all. I’ve got a MULTI FIC fake marriage for all. And I’m not sorry.

13. do you write fics similar to what you enjoy reading or completely different? both?

The science fiction and the canon au is similar to what I used to enjoy reading IRL. But I’m in a phase of reading very gentle fiction. Fluff and easy reading. Comfort reading, so what I mainly read in my fanfiction is modern AU fluff fics.

14. what’s your writing process like?

My fic writing is a lot less planned out that my original novel writing. Probably because I already have the characters straight in my head and if I’m doing canon, I have the world too.

So what happens is I get an idea that excites me. It starts spinning around in my head and I want to see what would happen if I put Clarke and Bellamy in that world. Sometimes I have an idea about where it ends up. Sometimes I don’t have any idea (except for Bellamy and Clarke always get together, but i may not know how.)

Then I go with the inspiration and write furiously for however long. When I’m posting a chapter every day or three? That’s this phase. Then I hit a snag. I’ve run out of inspiration or doubts have infiltrated my story or I don’t know where the plot goes next or life has gotten messy and ruined my focus, or maybe the story just got complicated and I need to work out the snag. My pace slows down. I start taking on other projects, writing or otherwise. I figure out the snag and work my way back into the story (or occasionally) I decide that story is either too complicated and drop it, or I decide that I’ve actually finished the story and need to wrap it up.

15. multi-chapter, oneshot, or drabble?

Multi-chap. At heart, I’m a novelist and I have a hard time not thinking about how the tropes got to be the way they were in the story, so I build a world around them and create things to make them more logical or deal with cause and effect. And I also have a hard time leaving short stories the way they are, without continuing with what comes next. Sometimes when I read one shots or drabbles, I really don’t understand how the fic writers can simply not write what comes next. How do you keep yourself from continuing? My urge is to keep exploring the characters, story and world. I have finished multichaps that I could keep going with, but I have moved on to other stories.

16. if someone was only going to read one of your fics, which would you want them to read?

That’s a hard one. I think each one has something different to offer and I like them all. I put so much effort into the multichaps so I’m going to stick with one of those and pick the one I’m writing right now. Into Eden. It’s a space colonist AU and is turning out to be my longest fic ever and I think I’d count it as a novel. It will have a beginning, middle and an end, and there’s quite a bit of world building and conflict. It’s a fake marriage/mail order bride where Bellamy is the bride. If I can take a trope and put my personal spin on it so it’s a unique story, that’s what I’ll do. And that’s what I am trying to do here.

i’m really bad at tagging and this is why i don’t often do these things. it gives me anxiety so I’m only tagging a couple and if i missed you and you want to do it, please pretend that I tagged you because I actually want to hear EVERYONE do this.
