Actually. I have a prediction that's not necessarily for the next chapter but a development i feel is necessary for yuuji's character: i think after all this blows over, or maybe midway through something triggers it, he starts crying. Full on bawling and sobbing for everything that he'd never actually emotionally processed. But not an aggressive cry like those two instances in shibuya, but one of relief, but also of grief for all that's lost, for being dealt this hand in life he never deserved, for losing all these people: megumi, gojo, higaruma, choso, even his grandpa, nobara and nanami. But this time he finally, finally gets to let it all out, instead of it bursting through him in small successions that never gets processed for him. I'd love if that happened to him.

[lovely sab, if you do me the honor of answering this, please consider tagging it as jjk manga spoilers for those who haven't read it yet]
the way the manga is going imma crawl once again in your inbox and BEG you to keep up the fanon work cause
DAMN IT ALL WITH THAT ONE EYED CAT
I was upset when junpei died but i thought, well, it DOES serve the story somehow-
I felt so sad with Rika and the whole becoming a curse thingy, the bittersweet ending of her helping yuta let her go kinda added to it but, well, it DID have a pivotal role for a special grade with so much potential-
amanai's death was so sudden I had to close the manga for a sec, but it starts off geto's villain era and well this IS a major point-
and geto, I was DEVASTATED when he died he is my FAV and while it did stay true to the tragedy of his story it was HEARTBREAKING-
haibara did NOT deserve to die and that is ALL that needs to be said-
toji was kinda going for it, but still his last memory of his wife was a tad too much to bear, still-
AND MIMIKO AND NANAKO, WHY ?? JUST WHY ?? THEY WERE JUST USED FOR THE GRANDEUR OF SUKUNA NO MORE NO LESS-
its WAY too soon to talk for nanami, that man is still gnawing at my mind, all the pressure he had and he never got the chance to get the rest he wanted, still it was probably done to turn yuji to the state he is currently, losing a mentor he had-
i did not like mai to begin with, guilty as charged, but her becoming a sword for her sister, and requesting she destroy everything, it made me bawl-
the zenin clan can die all they want no rant for them
and yuki, well, she did tick me a bit but her dying without even accomplishing her goal-the black hole and all-
hell, NOBARA ????? why ???? WHY GEGE ????
BUT
THE LAST DAMNED STRAW
WAS GOJO NOT ONLY DYING
BUT BEING USED AS A PAWN
AS IF THAT WASNT THE CASE FOR HIS WHOLE LIFE
SO SAB PLEASE KEEP UP I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO GRIEVE THEM ANYMORE
no literally anon, I feel the same way. I feel like we were all fooled by the first season in a way (despite junpei and the other horrors) but we were lulled into thinking it would be okay for our main group.
but it wasn’t.
I’ll never be over nanami tbh — that death literally hurt so bad and mappa made it worse somehow — don’t know how they did it. all the death is supposed to demonstrate how cruel jujutsu is, but at some point I feel like I become both numb but too sensitive to it — like a scabbed over wound that won’t heal because it’s picked at.
gojo hurt so much the first time and 261 feels like I’m mourning him all over again — I honestly am so glad for break week because I don’t think I could take it personally. I’m so worried for yuta - I don’t even know how to deal. and gojo being inflicted to the same fate as geto will never not hurt me.
I am trying 😭 my actor au is my way of acting like everyone is fine and that it’s just a show (I mean it is a show but you know what I mean) - I’m Gege now guys, cannot deal with that one eyed cat anymore 😭😭

Congratulations to JJK fandom for successfully harassing Baeli with slurs, vulgar words, calling her a bitch for "controlling the minds of many" into believing in her theories as a fact (this is WHY I always remind people who engaged in theories that it will remain as "theories" until it is made canon!) until she was forced to deactivate her Twitter account. It was supposed to be a safe platform for her to consume her favourite piece of media and engage with the materials faithfully.
Thanks to her I had fun reading JJK and its contents in a different perspective but this fandom is doing too much for being a "Gege defender". What is worse about this is that being rude and shitty is ALLOWED AND NORMALIZED in the name of "the right cause" so for them to do this rotten deed to Baeli who wanted everyone to engage with the series by making sort of theories, connecting the hints, symbolism that were left by Gege himself is what drove me to never interact with anybody who find joy in disregarding others' rightful opinions towards the series.
As I said before, you love the ending? you love the conclusion? Good for you! Now please move along with that and let others grieve and confess their feelings in peace. Pay them no mind just as much as you expect others to do the same.
Being a full fledged adult doesn't mean you're an adult physically and mentally if you cannot handle people having fun doing what they love and express their disappointment, dissatisfaction at the same time. Being a smart person doesn't give you the right to push other people into taking your side.
I've never realized what kind of a fandom is this until they resulted into violent acts. Funny how TR fandom has never resulted into this mess even though the majority of the fandom hated the ending.
Tumblr media
I thank God for Baeli's existence tbh.

BEFORE READING, I NEED YOU TO BE AWARE OF THIS:
1. the whole story belongs to Gege Akutami and the credits go to them and them only.
2. the spell curses used belong to Tite Kubo due to them being the ‘Kidos’ being used on the manga and anime ‘Bleach’ - but none is mentioned in this chapter.
2.5 for the ‘cursed spells’/kidos (bleach) i will link this video here and tell you the time stamp to check out what i am intending to show - remember i add a few twist here and there by adding the katana to link with Y/N’s cursed technique
no cursed spells used this episode..
3. if you are confused on anything, please don’t hesitate to message me since i know this whole thing is so confusing.

“You know...It’s better to show yourselves than rather hide from me Fushiguro, Kugisaki,” you firmly mentioned before slowly turning your head to the side, quickly noticing the tense nature of the two classmates hiding behind a tree and some bushes before they hesitantly made their way out of their hiding place causing them to reveal themselves and to discover a nonchalant look displayed on your face.
‘Like what the hell, if you’re going to hide maybe hide your cursed energy while you’re at it’
“Did you both follow me here? You guys are such drags and stalkers, you know that is really creepy right?” you questioned both of them with an assumed tone before placing the bouquet of blue hydrangeas and white roses against the tomb, covering the last name on the engraved stone in case Kugisaki was going to come closer to you.
“Ah sorry,” Kugisaki apologies before placing her hands together in a ‘please forgive me’ position while Fushiguro just looked off to the side as if he could just avoid your glance to not feel embarrassed about getting caught.
Letting out an airy laugh, you turned back to the stone in front of you leading to your small smile to instantly turn back into a straight line as you glared at the incense’s smoke that was dancing in the air while your hand hesitantly went to the side of your neck.
‘It’s just a dream...It’s just a dream…’
“Does your neck hurt again? I suggest you stop sleeping under the tree if it does,” Fushiguro commented, causing you to jolt in surprised as you didn’t realise that he was now suddenly next to you rather than a few steps away to which could be said the same for Kugisaki, who was standing on the other side of you while looking at the tombstone that all three of you were now standing in front of.
“Hey! You didn’t answer my first question, did you both follow me here?” you asked once again with a teasing tone, causing both of your classmates to look to the side away from you since they instantly knew there was no way out of this little situation...it’s no surprise since you are Gojo’s adoptive daughter.
“It was Kugisaki’s idea to follow you since you disappear from time to time,” the shikigami sorcerer outed, as he placed a hand on the back of his neck to ease his bashfulness while Kugisaki turned her head towards him, ready to yell and counter his statement.
“Fushiguro is lying, it was his idea!” Kugisaki shouted in annoyance, causing your eyes to shift back and forward between them as you were somewhat finding slight amusement on what was going on at this current moment in time.
“Ah~ is that so?” you questioned, while slowly raising your hands to smack the back of their heads without them noticing causing both of your classmates to groan in pain once they felt the violent impact, before holding the back of their heads to ease the pain that was somehow intensifying - to be honest, they deserved it for trying to stalk you.
“Who are you visiting?” Fushiguro curiously asked with a hesitant tone since he didn’t want to accidentally cross the line on your comfort zone leading you to turn to him for a second before looking at the stone with a hint of heartache forming in your eyes as well as your heart.
“My mother,” you softly answered, leading your classmates to turn to you with widened eyes before looking at the stone showcasing where your mother was resting as a feeling of sympathy began to consume their whole body.
“I really don’t need your pity guys, it’s been 6 years already, so it’s not necessary,” you mentioned before they could give their condolences to you. You didn’t need it or rather, you didn’t want to hear any of it. When your mother passed away, you were used to the fact that you were the only one grieving since it was always just you and her in your own little world, there was no one giving you their condolences then and you didn’t want them now. It was already too late for that.
“So your real mother actually passed away, is that why Gojo-sensei adopted you?” Kugisaki asked, leading you and Fushiguro to slightly tense as you both were reminded of the fact that the ‘adoption’ story was just a (somewhat) clever cover-up to conceal your true identity as well as to not raise any suspicion on your sudden enrolment to Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College.
“Yeah, he found me a year after and took me in,” you lied through your teeth, hoping that you were convincing enough to continue the lie leading your friend to nod her head, as she continued to gaze at your mother’s resting place.
“What was she like?” Fushiguro suddenly asked as he was trying to divert the conversation into a different topic leading you to open your mouth to answer before closing it again to tilted your head to the side slightly as you began to wonder all the things you could say to Fushiguro and Kugisaki to inform them about the person that brought you into the world.
“She was someone that I could only forgive if she did something wrong,” you quietly answered before mentally wondering if that was the right thing to say.
“She was someone that was quite selfless, even if that meant sacrificing her whole happiness to make someone else happy, that was the type of person she was,” you extended, trying to ignore the first comment you made since you were still wary of what you had just stated.
Fushiguro and Kugisaki hummed absentmindedly as they listened to your answer as they continued to peer at the stone that was in front of them like it was a painting of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
“You know, it isn’t a painting to admire, right? There’s nothing special about a grave,” you questioned causing your classmates to break out from their daze to look at you before becoming flushed again since they didn’t realise that they were gawking. “It’s fine, I’m just teasing,” you commented before letting out another airy laugh as you processed to turn your heels and began to walk away from your mother’s resting place to the exit of the cemetery leading Fushiguro and Kugisaki to look at your direction in confusion before making their way towards you.
“Since you guys followed me all the way here, what do you want to do?” you asked, once they both caught up to you leading Kugisaki to answer immediately about the fact that you both needed to go to the bubble tea shop that you both went to the other day since she was craving it again leading to the erratic-haired sorcerer to groan slightly since he wasn’t in the mood to get anything sweet which caused you to explain that the shop also had black coffee if he wasn’t feeling the sugary drink.
“Are you the type to drink black coffee to impress a girl even though you don’t like it? That isn’t healthy Fushiguro, you shouldn’t do that to impress Gojo,” Kugisaki commented with a hint of worry since she didn’t expect the shikigami user to be the type to do what she has assumed. However, this seemed to annoy Fushiguro more as you discovered the irked mark on his forehead before answering that he always drank black coffee - to be honest, that statement made you remember the time you and Gojo had coffee together and you were disgusted about the number of sugar cubes he added into the caffeinated drink.
“I’m surprised you're not getting any orange juice,” Fushiguro mentioned, leading Kugisaki to widen her eyes in surprise since she hasn’t noticed you drinking your favourite juice for the whole day at all.
“I don’t know if you’re extremely bad stalkers or you lost me during your following session, but I have one here,” you stated in a matter-of-fact tone, as you dug into the pocket of your Jujutsu Tech uniform skirt to pull out a carton of orange juice leading your fellow sorcerers to look at the drink in shock since they didn’t remember you buying anything at all when they were following you.
“HOW?!” Kugisaki yelled out in complete surprise as she grabbed the boxed drink from your grasp while staring at it like it was a curse to be exorcised leading to the feeling of amusement to rise again since the situation was becoming funnier by the second rather than sorrowful like it was supposed to be today.
“I bought it at the vending machine just a few minutes away from this cemetery, maybe you two were arguing or something,” you commented with a small smile as you did recall hearing two people shouting at each other from a distance when you were collecting your drink from the dispenser - it was something like ‘this is really a stupid idea’ followed by ‘but we need to figure out where Gojo goes when she disappears, I want to knowwww’.
“You guys are such drag, so you better pay for my drink for me to forgive you both for stalking me,” you voiced out with a smirk planted on your face causing Fushiguro to look at you with widen eyes since he wasn’t expecting any consequences when it came to Kugisaki’s little investigation.
“Hold up, but don’t you have more money than us because you take on more missions? How much do you have Gojo?!” Kugisaki questioned as she moaned at the fact that she was going to pay you rather than spending that money on the Balenciaga jacket that she was hoping to get.
“That’s why I paid for your drink last time, so it’s your turn don’t you think?” you asked before continuing with, “think of it as a ‘thank you’ gift to me for the fact that I trained you both for the past two months,” leading both of the sorcerers besides you to quickly realise that paying for your drink might not be as bad as they expected - two months of training in exchange for paying your bubble tea, they didn’t mind that exchange at all.
“Ah alright, Kugisaki let’s go half and half,” Fushiguro stated causing the female sorcerer to nod as she gave you back your orange juice before linking your arm with hers due to the fact, she was more excited about spending the day with you for an extra day of the week rather than going back to Jujutsu Tech to do nothing.
“I just realised, the Kyoto Exchange Event is tomorrow isn’t it?” you asked before looking up to the sky as you began to recall what date it was today. However, it seemed like you were more concentrated on your feeling of relief as you noticed a few clouds moving across the sky rather than the one you could remember… you were reassured that it wasn’t just a solid blue that was above you right now.
“Yeah, and we are going to beat their asses!” Kugisaki cheered determinedly, leading you to giggle at her enthusiasm since she seemed motivated to win the whole event altogether.
“Do you think you’ll be picked for the individual battle?” Fushiguro questioned, causing you to shift your head towards him as you began to wonder if there was a possibility of you being chosen. From what you knew, Todo Aoi seemed to be the strongest sorcerer on the Kyoto side and had the highest chance of being picked for the second day of the Kyoto Exchange Event.
Although, it seemed like you didn’t have an answer to provide for the shikigami sorcerer leading you to raise your hand to quickly flick his forehead, catching him by surprise since it was one of your lighter ones. “I have no idea, you drag~” you answered, before placing your hand in your pocket.
“But one thing I do know is that we’re going to win the team's battle,” you mentioned with a courageous smile. You were confident since both Fushiguro and Kugisaki have improved so much during the past two months - much more than you had anticipated due to the short amount of time you three had to prepare for it.
Fushiguro and Kugisaki nodded boldly at your statement as it seemed like your confidence and determination had affected them as well.
Tomorrow, you all were going to win.

It’s been three days since the news of Yuji’s death reached you. To be honest, you’ve been a mess. Megumi has been as helpful as possible, cooking for you, tending to whatever needs you had. You’re more than grateful, and he is more than willing to help.
“(y/n), are you hungry?” Megumi asks, leaning against the doorframe.
“Mm a little bit.”
“I can make you something if you’d like, unless you’d rather order takeout.”
“I’m fine with whatever.” You say paying little attention to what he’s saying due to your inability to focus on anything. He notices your far away demeanor and settles on deciding for you.
“ok, then I’ll be back in a bit.”
“ok.”
Megumi’s eyes linger on your broken expression. He shared in your grief, and he understood that Yuji was very important to you and his death is affecting you intensely. He made his way to the school kitchen. A loud female voice pulling him out of his thoughts.
“Oi what are you doing?”
“Kugisaki. I’m making (y/n) something to eat.”
“What are you making?” She asks, walking over to the counter Megumi was standing behind.
“Itadori taught me how to make meatballs and I remember them mentioning that they like them so.”
“Need any help?” Nobara asks, tying her hair back away from her face, ready to help Megumi with his cooking endeavor.
“Sure, it’ll take less time then.”
Megumi and Nobara began working on the meatballs, carefully following the recipe that Yuji had taught.
You sat on your bed staring out the window, patiently waiting for the food Megumi would soon bring. However, your mind was elsewhere. Thoughts of Yuji flooded your mind.
Could you have stopped him from going?
No, he had to go. There’s nothing you could have done to stop him. He wanted to save everyone, even if it cost him his life and in the end, it did. The more you thought about him, the more your heart hurt. A knock at the door momentarily broke you from your grieving.
— find you - nick jonas —
“Come in.”
A tall figure walks into the room, a smile plastered across their face.
“Maki? do you need something?”
“Not really, just came to check on you. Megumi is currently slaving away in the kitchen making something for you and he said you were alone so I thought I’d keep you company.“ She responds, another smaller figure emerging from behind her.
“Salmon.”
“Oh, Inumaki you’re here too.”
“Tuna tuna.”
You giggle at his choice of words, still not used to the onigiri ingredients speech he tends to use.
“So do you have a curse?” She asks.
Do I have a curse.
Well if you count all the unfortunate events that seem to happen in your life, then yes, you had a curse. But you knew that’s not what she was talking about.
“No I don’t.” You respond.
“Well I don’t either, so we’re in the same boat.”
You give her a confused look.
“Wait, then how are you a sorcerer?”
“I use weapons imbued with cursed energy and my glasses help me see the curses I’m fighting. If I’m being honest (y/n), I came here to ask if you wanted to train with us, for the Kyoto exchange.”
Your confused expression turned into an absolutely bewildered one.
“No no I couldn’t, it’s only a month away, that’s not enough time for me to learn anything. Anyways I’m supposed to be keeping a low profile, I’m not supposed to be here. So there’s no way I could fight in a school wide event.”
“Well, we could train you in secret and then present you to Principal Yaga, he can give a placement test and if you pass you’ll be able to fight with us.”
“Salmon.”
You contemplate the suggestion carefully. Could you even become mediocre enough to fight alongside them? Well it’s worth a shot.
“I’ll do it.”
For Yuji.
“Alrighty then, we’ll get started tomorrow.” She says with an amused smirk.
“What starts tomorrow?” Megumi asks, walking into the room with two bowls and two sets of chopsticks. Nobara is trailing behind him carrying a large pot.
“I’m going to teach (y/n) how to use cursed tools so she can participate in the exchange.” Maki says.
“Is that enough time for them to learn? The Kyoto students are no joke.” Megumi responds.
“I’m sure they’ll be fine.” Maki says winking at you. Inumaki exits with her leaving you three to eat your dinner.
Megumi directs Nobara over to the small table located in the center of the room. She places the pot on a small mat and opens it up. The familiar aroma fills your nose.
“Are those meatballs?!”
“Yeah come eat, Kugisaki made some ramen as well.”
“It’s my special ramen recipe, you’ll definitely like it (y/n)!”
You smile at the pair sitting before you. Oh how lucky you were to have such caring people in your life. They make this difficult time a little bit easier. You drop yourself onto the floor next to the table and Megumi hands you a pair of chopsticks. Kugisaki grabs one of the bowls and serves some of the ramen and places it in front of you.
“Ittadakimasu.” You say, more than ready to dig into the food your friends so carefully prepared for you.
“(y/n) try this.” Megumi says a meatball in between his chopsticks, which are sitting right in front of your face. You lean forward and bite into it, Megumi’s hand sitting underneath your chin in case you spill. Your eyes widen.
“This tastes just like Yuji’s!”
“I’m glad you think so, he taught me how to make them a little while ago and I remember you saying you liked them.”
Your expression softened as you stared deep into Megumi’s eyes. Both sets of eyes full of care towards the other, a small smile playing across each face.
“Bleh, save it for when you’re alone you two.” Nobara says, forcefully making her presence known.
You turn away from him, a light blush tinting your cheeks. The three of you sit and eat in comfortable silence, simply enjoying each other’s presence.
Although, it did feel too quiet. You secretly hoped Yuji would burst through the door with a big smile and break the silence with a verbal sledgehammer. You missed his loud voice, his energy, his bravery, his hugs, his hands, his lips. You shake your head.
What were those thoughts about? Since when did you miss the way he felt?
You feel a hand land on yours jolting you slightly. You turn your head and see Megumi’s hand half clasped around yours, rubbing his thumb across your flesh.
“You’re crying (y/n), are you ok?”
Crying?
You touch your face and feel a dampness sitting on your cheek. When did you start crying?
Megumi lets go of your hand and wipes your cheek with the back of his. His hand lingers on your cheek and you lean into his warm touch.
I like the way his hands feel too, I wonder what his lips feel like...
“I’ll wash up the dishes” Nobara says, standing and collecting all the dirty bowls scattered across the table.
— streets - doja cat —
She exits the room, leaving you and Megumi alone. His hand finds his way back to yours, as he mindlessly scrolls through his phone. You lean your head onto his shoulder, wrapping your arm around his. He turns and gives you a soft kiss on your temple. His lips felt soft and warm. You wanted to feel them again.
“We should sleep. It’s getting pretty late.” He says, his face mere inches away from yours.
“Will you..stay next to me...just until I fall asleep.” You hesitantly ask.
“Sure.” He responds with a sweet smile. He smiles more often now, but only when he’s with you. As if, he only wants you to see him smile. As if his smile belonged to you.
“You can take a shower first.” He says, as he reaches his hands out to you pulling you up from the ground and into his arms. You let go of him and make your way over to the closet. You grab some pajamas and your shower stuff and walk into the bathroom. You take a quick shower, desperate to sleep this awful day away. You walk out of the bathroom, a towel around your neck, protecting your clothes from the water that drips from your hair. Megumi walks behind you, taking the towel off of your shoulders. He drops it back on top of your head, and begins gently massaging your hair.
“You don’t have to Megumi, I could have done it myself.” You say, a soft blush painting your cheeks.
“It’s fine, I wanted to do it anyway.” He responds, His fingers expertly rubbing your damp hair. His gentle movements slowly put you to sleep, and you catch yourself leaning back onto his chest. He throws the towel into the laundry bin and picks you up bridal style carrying you to your bed. You’re too exhausted to try and stop him, so you allow yourself to melt into his hold. He places you on your bed and gets into it himself. He keeps himself above the covers, giving you space so you can feel his presence without feeling uncomfortable. You slowly drift off to sleep.
You wake up when you feel the bed move. Your eyes open slightly catching Megumi sitting on the edge of your bed, ready to go to his own. You reach over and lightly tug on the edge of his shirt, getting his attention.
“Where are you going?” You ask, your voice groggy and strained.
“Back to my bed, I thought you were asleep.” He responds, brushing his soft fingers across your cheek.
“...Stay.”
He looks at you with a faint shocked expression.
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. I’m only a few feet away you could-“
“Stay.” You say, cutting him off mid sentence. He gives in, and lays back down on the bed next to you.
“Are you cold?” You ask.
“No I’m ok.” He says.
You know he’s lying. He’s actively shaking next to you, and he thinks you won’t notice? Nice try Megumi.
“Get under the covers, you’re shaking.”
He gives you a questioning look, making sure you actually know what you’re saying.
“You sure?”
“Yes Megumi I’m sure.”
He sits up once again, pulling the blankets up and over himself. You slot yourself next to him, facing his back. You subconsciously wrap an arm around him, placing your chin comfortably on his shoulder. Your breath tickles his ear, causing him to smile ever so slightly. He intertwines your hands and enjoys the warmth radiating from your body.
He wakes up early the next morning, your legs tangled together and your lips dangerously close to his. He must have turned in his sleep. He sets his smooth hand on your still sleeping face, running his thumb across the apple of your cheek.
“Cute.”

Wednesday’s T and G reading
I’ve reached page 1 of my to-read list on AO3. Once I’m done with this page, I’ll be going back to page 58 to repeat the backward-reading process, this time with all fics under 5k words. So future lists may be smaller.
Finished:
Tumblr:
LQR redemption for the creepy!JFM prompt, by @angstymdzsthoughts
Teen:
bunnies, by wearing_tearing
“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, the papers will still be here in a few hours,” Wei Ying says and brushes a soft kiss to the hinge of Lan Wangji’s jaw. “Come spend time with your husband, Lan Er-gege. I miss you.”
*
Lan Wangji rarely finds within himself the strength to deny Wei Ying.
recovery, by wearing_tearing (third in a series)
The brand on Lan Wangji’s chest does not hurt anymore.
wherever the chaos is, by wearing_tearing (fourth in a series)
“But, Teacher Wei—”
“I believe in you! If you really need my help, I’ll come down from the tree, I promise.”
*
Lan Wangji does not regret his decision to let Wei Ying teach classes in the Cloud Recesses.
emperor’s smile, by wearing_tearing (fifth in a series)
“What are the conditions?” he asks, going back to the point. If he does not know the conditions, he will miss Wei Ying’s kisses.
That’s unacceptable.
*
Lan Wangji knows he does not have to, but he does not stop himself from grabbing a cup, filling it to the brim with Emperor’s Smile, and gulping it all down.
My Brother's Keeper - Vinegar, by ArchiveWriter (second in a series)
Jiang Cheng is angry and not quite sure what to do with it, so he as usual directs it at Wei Ying (for being stupid and crazy) and Lan Wangji (for being a stuck-up arrogant self-important snooty... well, the list is long, but mainly for being possessive of Wei Ying. Watching them from afar allows for silent fuming. Not to be taken too seriously - some Jiang Cheng soul-searching bound to result in self-conflict. Image a fly in a glass with no lid and still banging against all the glass walls... This is set post-canon, post 'Love Song', pre 'My Brother's Keeper - Most Treasured' and elaborates on what went on in Jiang Cheng's head when watching WWX and LWJ in the markets with them being oblivious. I had fun cramming as many adjectives as I could think of into this, so it's probably 'purple prose' :-) This might be a bit more light-hearted but I still can't see WWX and Jiang Cheng reconcile.

Snippet from Discord 17
Normally he waited outside the tea shop for the owner's son to bring out the bags of tea leaves. While one would think that it would be easier to get such things directly from a spice shop, the owner had traded talismans for his overstock. This way he wasn't throwing out older leaves that could still be used, and the people of the Burial Mound benefited.
Despite what the rumor mongers from out of town liked to say, the people of Yiling actually quite liked the Wen and their Patriarch.
Having left Wei Wuxian with Yuan, he'd much expected the same only to be ushered inside. Mo Xuanyu had stepped to the side of the doorway to keep himself out of the way, staring at the floor.
Despite everything, he wasn't used to crowds anymore. Being around so many people after years of isolation was... Overwhelming.
He wasn't surprised by the men talking badly of his - friend. People always liked to tell tales of drama and evil without truly knowing of what they spoke.
A burning flash of white swept passed him quickly, but Mo Xuanyu did not look up.
"Tourists," tsked the young man as he stepped forward to press the carefully wrapped bag into Mo Xuanyu's hands. "Talking like they know anything about our Yiling Laozu."
Smiling slightly at the sentiment, Xuanyu bowed politely.
"Thank you again, young master," the shopkeeper flushed slightly at the words, as he always did. "The grandmothers will be pleased."
"Let me know if there are any requests next time, cultivator!"
Stepping out of the shop, he was surprised to see a tall figure in white standing opposite Wei Wuxian. And... Was Yuan attached to that Lan's leg?
Oh dear.
Even if he'd been a child when the Yiling Patriarch had died, he knew enough to know that the Sects had mixed feelings for him prior to the Jin setup.
"A-Yuan!" slid quietly from his lips as he glanced nervously up at the stranger. "Come here please."
"Yu-ge!" The boy was delighted at the sight of him in the way that brought that too sharp warmth to his chest. "You were lost but I found you!"
He knelt carefully to scoop the toddler into his arms, feeling some of the weariness fall from his too thin face at the weight and warmth of Yuan. A very real but not quite conscious fear was put to rest with the boy away from this cultivator that Xuanyu didn’t know. Standing, he blinked at the sudden appearance of Wei Wuxian at his side taking the package of tea from his side.
Well, it let him hold Yuan better, so he'd let this bit of coddling slide.
It was reassuring to have him there next to him, willing to protect them with all of his frightful strength against this person.
"Was I lost indeed?" he asked with raised brows, absently brushing free hairs out of his face. "How brave of A-Yuan to come looking for me all alone."
As the boy screwed up his face trying to decide if he wanted to admit to breaking the rules and following Mo Xuanyu alone, the Lan spoke.
"Wei Ying," the deep, sedate voice spoke and Mo Xuanyu suddenly realized who this was. “Who?”
Why was Hanguang-Jun looking for the Yiling Patriarch and speaking to him so familiarly?
"Oh, Lan Zhan this is my pretty Mo Xuanyu!"
Exasperated with the unneeded addition to his introduction, he wryly made a silly face at Yuan, who smiled brightly and giggled. That Wei Wuxian spoke Hanguang-Jun's personal name so blatantly was to be expected, but it was still almost embarrassing to hear it. This man, his friend, was so utterly shameless like no one else he’d ever met; even Xue Yang had played at manners most of the time.
Glancing up from under his lashes at the tall Lan, Xuanyu felt something in his stomach lurch at the sudden upset in normally placid features. Something that Wei Wuxian had said had caused the honorable Second Jade pain and that brought another realization.
Absently sticking a still pointy elbow in the Yiling Patriarch's side so that he yelped, Mo Xuanyu bowed slightly as he tried to figure out how to salvage this.
This explained the years of seclusion that the Second Jade had undergone after the death of the man he loved. While he was pretty sure he’d never been in love like that, never grieved for someone even if he’d lamented what could have been with his brothers. Jin Zixuan had died before he’d gotten the chance to know him, and Jin Guangyao had never felt familial towards him, no matter how he’d acted.
Now… now Mo Xuanyu felt something for Wei Wuxian, who was so kind and ridiculous, who was free with affection and conversation. Looking at the two of them, there was something fragile and beautiful there that even dreadful, hopeless Mo Xuanyu wished to protect.
He’d failed to even die properly, but maybe he could do more than let himself be taken care of, now. This was – this was maybe something he could save, by saving Wei Wuxian. It was another thought towards keeping the impossible man alive, and he doubled his determination to find someone who he could steal a golden core from.
"This one was saved by the Yiling Laozu, Hanguang-Jun," voice quiet, he easily shifted his meager weight to one leg so that he was farther away from Wei Wuxian. "He has been most kind in taking care of this one."
"Wei Ying is kind," the man agreed, something relaxing at the corners of his golden eyes. "Mo Xuanyu is deserving of kindness, if Wei Ying has given it."
"Hey, you guys are being embarrassing! And boring," whined the Yiling Patriarch at Mo Xuanyu's side. "If we're going to talk we should get something to eat! Lan Zhan can pay, because we're very poor."
Sighing at this shameless man, Xuanyu gratefully received the comforting pat on the cheek from Yuan. He was a bright boy, and getting quite skilled at reading the mood of whoever held him.
"If Yiling Laozu will allow, this one will take A-Yuan back home. I'm sure Hanguang-Jun has much to discuss with you."
"No."
His head jerked up as Lan Wangji spoke with implacable finality. The upset he'd noticed before was completely wiped free from that beautiful face, even as Wei Wuxian threw a casual arm over Mo Xuanyu's shoulders. The hurt and almost jealousy was nowhere to be seen, and instead intense golden eyes slid over thin, still faintly bruised features and then traveled Wei Wuxian's arm back to the man himself.
"Lan Zhan's right, pretty stranger," his friend said as if it were the most normal thing in the world to eat lunch with legends. "Feeding you and A-Yuan is also important."
"Food?" at the mention of his near favorite thing, the toddler turned wide eyes on his Xian-gege. "Food? Yu-ge, Xian-gege, we’re getting food?"
“Yup! No arguing, either, pretty!”
“I – Yiling Laozu, please. I can walk unaided.”

Nirvana in Fire Post Ending Fic Recs (ENG)
Updated: 20th April with six fics
Nirvana in Fire Fanfiction Recs (English language) From the wailing and gnashing of teeth on tumblr it seems there’s a new crop of brave souls venturing into Nirvana in Fire. Hello all! Please remain hydrated throughout the ride.
I’ve put together a rec list of post-ending fics to support you when you’ve finished. There be SPOILERS under the cut, so please only read if you’ve finished the drama.
If anyone knows of any I’ve missed please feel free to add :)
Canon Ending Compliant - During the End Fics
Because sometimes you just want to twist the knife and read about Mei Changsu dying.
I will be with you, until the very end.
(1043 words) by gixi_ninja
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Lin Chen/Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe
Characters: Lin Chen, Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe
Additional Tags: Death, Angst, palliation, Not for resus
Summary:
All physicians know the signs of an impending death. There is a change of colour to the skin. The muscles go slack and weak. The pattern of breathing changes.
The night has grown deep. In the darkness of the tent, a single candle sputters. Lin Chen closes his eyes and counts Mei Changsu’s breaths.
(Lin Chen takes care of Mei Changsu in his last moments.)
This fic feels - very small, very claustrophobic, and yet very painful. It’s all about the breaths, and two promises Lin Chen has made.

drift (10632 words) by gooseberry Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: 琅琊榜 | Nirvana in Fire (TV) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Meng Zhi & Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe Characters: Meng Zhi, Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe, Lin Chen, Lie Zhanying, Zhen Ping, Yan Yujin, Xiao Jingrui, Fei Liu Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Mortality, Major Illness, War, Friendship/Love Summary: Meng’s messages to Jinling and Jingyan are short and carefully edited. He writes about the skirmishes that lead to battles and the battles that lead to stalemates. He writes about the snow, how it drifts in the valleys and low places, how it melts beneath the sun and freezes again during the night. He writes about his generals, his lieutenants, and his captains. He writes about his strategist.
He writes, Mei Changsu is a skilled tactician. His insights have led to profitable battles with low casualty rates. He silently mouths to himself, He can no longer ride a horse. I don’t know how he will travel back to Jinling, and then writes, With Mei Changsu’s assistance, we will win this war quickly and with lower costs than anticipated.
He says to himself, “Mei Changsu is the cost,” and then covers his mouth with his hand, the scales of his gauntlet pricking at his skin.
---
Meng spends a cold winter caught in a war with two fronts--the Greater Yu army on one front, and a dying strategist on the other. It's basically ten thousand some-odd words of Meng-feels, Meng&Lin Shu bromance, and the slow breaking of a man's heart as he watches his best friend die.
This fic. This fic. This fic sliced my heart open, its Meng struggling to come to terms with the fact that Xiao Shu is dying, Meng struggling to win the war, and the cold. The cold is a character in its own right, it permeates the fic, hangs over everything. This fic took me by the hand and said “you think you already love Meng Zhi and know what it did to him to have to watch his friend die? let me show you.”

Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Lin Chen/ Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe
Characters: Lin Chen, Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe
Additional Tags: Minor Canonical Character(s), Meiling, Canon Compliant
Summary:
Lin Chen and Mei Changsu talk about love without ever using the word. A series of scenes at Meiling.
Reading this fic is like stabbing yourself over and over again. But it is so beautiful, and painful, and satisfying somehow like - of course it would hurt exactly THIS much, and in THIS way. It’s Mei Changsu dying but it’s also all the other ways that being at this second Meiling hurt Lin Chen as well, and yet he chooses to be there, because Mei Changsu is there. It’s all the history between them, all the love, and all the hurts and both are equally real and present. Read with a tissue to hand.

Summary:
“You’ll make a great Emperor one day, Jingyan,” he murmurs. “You’ll do great things…create a Da Liang that we can all be proud of.”
“And you’ll be here to watch me do it,” Jingyan reminds him. He tightens his grip on Xiao Shu’s hand. “I always keep my promises, Xiao Shu. So you must keep yours.”
Or: Prompt #77 "Mei Changsu dies in Jingyan's arms.”
This fic sets out events slightly different to how they are implied in canon, but it is canon compliant in all the most important ways. All the most painful ways. I finished this not knowing if this way was better or worse but definitely knowing that I’d been well and truly stabbed. Jingyan :(

It has been a long time since Jingyan has been here. He is the Crown Prince of the East Palace now, and his duties fill his days. There has been no need or desire to go to visit his old manor house - until now.
Jinyan smiles as his fingers unhook the latch that leads to the old hidden door. Even though it has been - months? a year? - the lanterns in the tunnel are still lit. His smile widens. He had heard that Mei Changsu - Xiao Shu - had returned. His old friend must be expecting him then.
Oh this one is exquisitely painful. I don’t know how to say more without spoiling it so - just read.

“Su-ge ge.” Fei-liu’s eyes are rimmed red and there are suspicious streaks of wetness down his cheeks. “Su-ge ge won’t wake up.”
(the aftermath of the ending of LYB)
This fic really, really doesn’t spare the knives :( Fei Liu’s reaction to his Su-gege’s death and Lin Chen’s helplessness in response is so so heartbreaking and there are no easy answers.

Summary:
Jingyan never finds out just how close Xiao Shu was to him, all this time, and the consequences thereof.
Okay so confession time. I haven’t actually read this fic. Look at the summary! Look at the tags!! My heart is fragile and just can’t take this level of pain. However I have read the first few paragraphs while squinting in between my fingers and I can confirm it is beautifully written. Also multiple people who are stronger/more masochistic than I have read it and told me it is amazing so. If you want to be EVEN SADDER go forth and stab yourself.

Characters: Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe, Xiao Jingyan, Lin Chen
Additional Tags: Hurt No Comfort
Summary:
Lin Shu makes a deal. Mei Changsu pays for it.
Some people just like their knives. This is so very very much something I could see Mei Changsu doing. This is another hard one to rec without giving away fundamentals of the plot so lets just say the knives are bright and shiny and Mei Changsu is perfect and all the other characters are as well, especially Lin Chen. Read if you want to be even sadder/ want to think ‘well, MCS could have made it so much worse!)

Summary:
Jingyan misses Xiao Shu in all the ways that matter but he cannot fall apart.
Surprisingly enough, Lin Chen can relate to that.
This is one of my favourite fics. Jingyan’s grief is so powerful and real and he is determined to be a good Emperor and live up to Xiao Shu’s belief in him, but it is so painful to see how he is falling apart. I love his developing friendship with Lin Chen, and the way they are able to come to support each other, and Fei Liu looking after Jingyan as well!

Characters: Princess Liu, Xiao Jingyan, Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe
Additional Tags: Character Study, POV Outsider, (kind of), Canon Compliant, canon pairings - Freeform, (so Xiao Jingyan/Princess Liu), (on the same level as the show), (and Xiao Jingyan/Mei Changsu), (if you squint), (or let's be honest if you don't squint), Arranged Marriage, Grief/Mourning
Summary:
They had called her Lady Liu.
Now, they call her Crown Princess.
In time, they will call her Empress.
This fic focuses in on a really, really minor character - who will not be a minor presence at all in the world post drama. I love the way this fic builds her character up from the little we see of her in the drama, the way it layers rumour and history and reality. I love that it doesn’t shy away from the inequality between Jingyan and Lady Liu, but that it shows them both awkwardly doing their best and coming to a place of contentment in the end.
Jingyan Deserves a Dog

Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Xiao Jingyan, Lin Chen, Fei Liu, Original Female Dog Character(s), Meng Zhi, Tingsheng, Eunuch Gao
Additional Tags: Jingyan deserves nice things, like a support network, and a dog, Lin Chen is a troll who can spot a prime trolling opportunity when he sees one
Summary:
Lin Chen gets Jingyan a dog.
Okay fair warning this is my own fic but I wanted to throw it in here. Lin Chen decides to get Jingyan a dog. Because I love Jingyan and I just wanted him to have a dog to cuddle and make him smile. Jingyan’s dog is the Best Dog and all (most of) Jinling agrees.
AU Ending - it’s happier than canon! (Limbo under the low bar)
Fics where MCS is still dying of a terminal illness but at least he’s able to live a bit longer with those who love him. (MCS may argue with whether these are ‘happier than canon’ but he doesn’t get a vote)
Lin Chen and Lin Shu's Excellent Adventure

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Fix-It of Sorts
Summary:
The AU in which the last thirty minutes of canon don't happen, and instead, Lin Chen and Lin Shu actually take the trip that Lin Chen had planned. Fei Liu and Nihuang can go, too.
Okay so there’s one chapter but its a long chapter and it feels like it works as a one shot (although I’m SO glad there’s going to be more!) This is an excellent, lovely, ensemble fic - it manages to pack so many characters in and they all gang up to lovingly bully MCS into taking better care of himself which is just my favourite thing ever. It’s so great to see them all together, there is excellent Nihuang and Jingyan, Consort Jing manages to bang some emotional intelligence into MCS (a miracle!!). It feels light hearted and genuinely funny but there is still a twist of very canon pain throughout the whole thing because Mei Changsu is still Mei Changsu and is Terrible at feelings.

Even to the Edge (7487 words) by soera Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: 琅琊榜 | Nirvana in Fire (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe/Xiao Jingyan Characters: Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe, Xiao Jingyan Summary: Whether as Lin Shu or as Mei Changsu, there's something obvious about Jingyan that he's missed.
[a.k.a. the one where Mei Changsu didn't know that Jingyan was in love with Lin Shu.]
This fic could also be called ‘Mei Changsu is the stupidest genius ever’ and I love it. It starts early in the series with a slight divergence which builds and builds over the series until we end up in a very different place. Mei Changsu just keeps digging himself deeper and deeper into his hole but he finally gets his head on straight just in time and I sniffled at the ending I’m not going to lie.
Episode 54
(7300 words) by hallo catfish
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Lin Chen, Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe, Fei Liu, Gong Yu, Zhen Ping
Summary:
An alternate ending where Mei Changsu, Lin Chen, and Fei Liu go on their promised trip. Schemes are made. Parties are ruined.
Lin Chen manages to drag MCS off on the trip as promised but MCS’ time is still trickling away. But it’s a wonderful trip! Lin Chen has all kinds of wonders planned (which are beautifully described and I want to go to all these places now!) Sadly Mei Changsu is determined to live up to his reputation as a party ruiner. Lin Chen just wants him to. Stop. Scheming!! This is a fic that made me laugh through my tears. It’s very focused on Lin Chen, Mei Changsu, and Fei Liu but we also get to see some key faces from Jiangzuo Alliace, some canon some not, and this fic really gave me a feeling of Mei Changsu’s life in the Jianghu.

Summary:
The Trip happened. Post-series. SPOILERS.
This is a single, deceptively simple scene which is so beautiful. You can almost feel the early morning sun. It’s Mei Changsu not knowing how much longer he was left but, finally, valuing that time. With some help from Lin Chen.
AU Ending - Fix It Fics
For when you just want to move to Egypt and read about Mei Changsu living and getting cuddles from Nihuang/Lin Chen/Jingyan etc.

Jingyan swallows. He’s heard of spirit stories such as these, of course; who hasn’t? But they’re meant to be pure myth, tales told over evening fires to capture the attention of new recruits.
The price of a life isn't easily paid. Jingyan will pay it anyway.
This fic is just lovely. It could be called bittersweet but Jingyan is happy so I am happy! It blends supernatural spirits and boons with the canon universe beautifully - it opens with young Jingyan (pure noble water buffalo) saving a stranded water buffalo calf and being offered a boon in return. I don’t want to say too much more about the plot for fear of spoiling but it features 1) frustrated man-of-science Lin Chen, 2) protective Lie Zhanying 3) doting besotted Mei Changsu 4) Stubborn and happy Jingyan, and these are all four excellent things which you should go enjoy for yourself right now!

Summary:
An Emperor stumbles. A man mourns.
[English translation of 洞仙歌 by 擂文]
This fic is front loaded with heart break and follows new Emperor Jingyan trying to cope with his responsibilities while grieving for Mei Changsu/Lin Shu, and everyone else worrying over him. Super good if you like Jingyan suffering and are feeling salty towards MCS for sticking him with a crap job. It’s a Chinese language fic that has been beautifully translated, and has lots of lovely side stories as well.

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, canon-typical triggers, what the fuck was I thinking, to write a story with a challenge deadline, about a man with three identities having an identity crisis, AND FROM HIS POINT OF VIEW
Summary:
Such a cold response comes as a shock. He'd expected impassioned pleas from her-- he had been steeling himself to endure them. Instead, he is left to consider, with a sudden sense of foreboding, how formidable Nihuang could be as an enemy.   Post-series, alternate ending. Lin Shu ends his engagement with Nihuang. Nihuang lets him. Jingyan finds this unacceptable.
Ugh, this fic is so good! Lin Chen saves Mei Changsu’s life. Mei Changsu is Not Happy about it. Mei Changsu proceeds to piss of absolutely everyone who cares about him and have a massive identityy crisis and be miserable until he manages to pull himself out enough to accept the support everyone is pushing at him. Everyone is just so GOOD in this fic, especially Nihuang (who is justifiably furious at MCS, and gets to be angry at him which is super satisfying given what he puts her through in the series and in this fic) and Jingyan who is completely willing to wield his imperial power in order to force his best friend to get his head out of his own arse..

This is the story of how Jingyan, now Emperor, visits Langya mountain three times to find out if Mei Changsu is alive, and manages to keep him, against all odds.
Another amazing translation - we are so lucky in this fandom <3 Okay warning that this a WIP but I wanted to include it because it is amazing. It looks like it is going to be very slow build and satisfying and Mei Changsu’s issues have issues so it’s going to take awhile. But worth it!

Another wonderful translation! Mei Changsu lives - but is refusing to admit it. Jingyan finally manages to hunt him down and force Mei Changsu to admit to it. There is some really beautiful descriptions, and Jingyan getting his man. Also poor Meng Zhi catching the fall out from these two idiots.

There are a number of recurring themes in Jingyan's life, and they all come down to Xiao Shu.
Another mpreg warning! The poison of the bitter flame is a very useful thing. So the majority of this fic is beautiful pre-series fluff about the main times Jingyan carried Lin Shu around but the end is the cutest fixit ever.

Because he dies :( And the first story is absolutely heartbreaking but the rest is bittersweet but also hilarious and I spent the entire time cheering ghost!Jingyan on because somehow Mei Changsu is even more Terrible at Feelings when he is dead.

Ghost MCS is much more… ghostly here but still manages to torment Lin Chen (who’s not a hundred percent sure whether or not he’s imagining it but…) And even beyond Ghost MCS it’s just a really lovely look at Lin Chen and Fei Liu living together at Langya Hall. Also Lin Chen discovering that Jingyan, in the words of Antony J Crowley, is ‘just enough of an asshole to be worth liking.’ I LIVE for Jingyan and Lin Chen becoming friends and supporting each other okay.

This is a wonderful translation of a truly epic fic and one of the first I read after finishing the series. Read this if you love Jingyan suffering and also want to show Lin Shu just want you put Jingyan through!! Even if this Lin Shu technically wasn’t the one lying and scheming and encouraging other people to hate him. The other thing I love is that even through there is no way Jingyan is going to let this Lin Shu go through the suffering that created Mei Changsu he still loves and misses Mei Changsu - and Mei Changsu’s memory has a strong presence all through this fic.

Mei Changsu was a pale, delicate-looking scholar with a gentle smile and a smooth, mellow voice, the kind that stirred the worst of Lin Shu’s scorn. (time travel AU)
I love this fic so, SO much. It never actually becomes clear if this is post ending fic or not but I really like the uncertainty. It’s a close Lin Shu POV, who is absolutely AMAZING, a beautiful disaster, who is so loved, has such a wonderful family around him, and then there is Mei Changsu. Lin Shu’s view of Mei Changsu is the best thing about the fic and I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoiling but it is SO good.

Fic: and sings the tune without the words, ch. 2
Relationship: Jiāng Yànlí & Jīn Zǐxuān, Lán Zhàn | Lán Wàngjī & Wèi Yīng | Wèi Wúxiàn
Characters: Jiang Yanli, Jin Zixuan, Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji, Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian
Additional Tags: Epistolary, Food, Music
Summary: An epistolary follow-up to “the thing with feathers.” Exchanged letters.
Notes: I’ve talked about yuanfen before, but it’s basically the chance or binding force that brings people or people and objects together, good and bad chances and potential relationships. It’s different than fate, which implies there’s a higher power of sorts involved. It doesn’t mean the people are meant to stay together. Lan Wangji feels it was yuanfen to meet Wei Wuxian again, particularly since he was calling his name despite the fact that he shouldn’t have known it, and he’s drawn to him in a way that makes him feel they will stick together in this lifetime. I love referencing Boya, whose friendship with Ziqi inspired the term “zhiyin,” or “to know the tone,” which has come to mean a close and sympathetic friend. According to the stories, when Ziqi died, Boya broke his guqin and refused to play it anymore. He’s well known for playing “High Mountains and Flowing Waters,” and so it is associated with Boya and zhiyin. They’re still 10 here, so despite what may appear to be romantic undertones, there’s no romance to these letters.

—————
Dear A-Zhan,
I’m sorry it took me a little while to write to you. Something happened that was scary, but I promise I’m okay. Please don’t worry.
I went to the training ground to watch a-niang and A-Cheng with their whips, and I had a bad episode—I guess that’s what a-niang and a-die call them? I don’t know if I ever saw a-niang use Zidian before, but in my episode she was whipping me with it and yelling terrible things, like that I would bring ruin on the Jiang sect.
A-Cheng said I fell and was moving like I was being whipped, and after they were afraid I wouldn’t wake up because it took two whole days for me to. Plus when I fell I hurt my wrist, which is another reason this letter took so long. I’m still not allowed out of the healing pavilion without an adult with me, so it’s super boring.
When I told a-niang what I saw, she cried and promised she never raised Zidian at me and never would, but she told me before I was hurt she was angry with me because she misunderstood why a-die brought me home, and that she was really sorry.
She’s been so kind to me that it’s hard to believe. But we had a long talk, and she said I’m an asset to the sect and could only bring the Jiang pride. She said she thought a-die loved my mama and wanted her as his wife instead, but learned he was grieving my baba and rescued me to raise me for him since they were sworn brothers.
I don’t think it matters what happened before. I don’t remember it, and she’s my a-niang. She comforted me when I was scared, and she believed me about the yao. She said she would work to be worthy of my forgiveness even if I already forgive her.
A-Die and a-niang have been telling me about my mama and baba. I guess a-niang and mama didn’t like each other a lot, which is kind of sad. But she said now she wishes she had tried to be friends with her, so she’ll do the next best thing and be good to me so mama can rest well. A-Die tells me a lot of stories about baba and it’s fun to hear them because some of them are when they were kids. He told me mama once shaved Lan-xiansheng’s beard while he was sleeping!
A-Jie keeps cooking me soup and A-Cheng made the servants move my bed and all my stuff back into his quarters. He said when Healer Kang lets me leave the infirmary, I shouldn’t be alone. A-Lian was so upset by what happened that she’s started sleeping in here. She says her gege shouldn’t be alone. She’s a bit of a blanket hog, not like you at all.
It’s weird without you at Lotus Cove, I guess since I don’t remember a time without you here. So it’s like you’ve been here my whole life! I’ll have to get used to it.
At least we’ll see each other in three months when I come to visit the Cloud Recesses for musical cultivation training.
When I miss you I wind up playing “High Mountain and Flowing Water,” like you were when I woke up, and since I miss you a lot I play it a lot. There’s a song in my head sometimes, too, in bits and too soft to fully hear.
I hope your trip back to Gusu went well, and that the bag of treats I packed was enough for the journey. A-Jie helped me put it together because she cooks the best.
I hope this letter finds you well,
Jiang Ying
Dear A-Ying,
While it is nice to be back in Gusu, I wish I was there with you, that I could play music for you and help you. If you need me, I will ask shufu to let me return to Lotus Pier.
Your episode sounds terrifying, but I am glad it has allowed you to talk with your mother more. She seemed to have trouble at first, like when she sometimes compared you and your brother. It seemed like a habit she was trying to break.
But it is clear she loves you. That is important. Yu-furen was the one to insist on your adoption. I don’t know if you knew that. She is letting go of the past as well, but perhaps it’s harder to let go of guilt.
I am glad you are learning more about your parents. I wish to learn about mine as well. My mother died when I was six, shortly before I met you in Yiling. The rattle drum had been a gift from her, and I gave it to you because your smile reminded me of her. My father has been in seclusion my whole life, so I also know nothing of him. I hesitate to ask shufu, because these things may be upsetting for him to discuss.
Perhaps if I asked him, he would paint my mother, as Yu-furen did for you. I remember her still, but I worry her features will grow fuzzy in my mind. I know you understand, given what you have experienced, but it’s difficult to try to explain to shufu.
Your sister’s soup is delicious, and I’m sure it helps you feel better. It is very kind for your brother to share his quarters with you, and I quite agree that you shouldn’t be alone. Your occasional nightmares were often very upsetting for you, and I’m sure your brother knows that and wants to help you however he can. I know I will rest easier knowing you have him with you at night. A-Lian may continue to find her way into your room even after you move from the infirmary. She loves you dearly and worries for your health. Perhaps keep a second blanket at the foot of the bed for these nights, so you won’t catch a chill when she steals the first.
I miss you, as well. I keep expecting to hear your voice, even in the Cloud Recesses. I, too, have found myself playing Boya; I wonder if we play it at the same time. I feel that you calling for me, that my meeting you again, was yuanfen. I have felt thus since you first woke while I was playing “Gao Shan Liu Shui.”
It is strange to be apart from you now. Three months seems like so long a time before your visit. I have been making a list of places you may enjoy when you come.
The trip back was uneventful, but pleasant. It was nice to travel by boat in a more leisurely way, and I believe you would enjoy the trip as well. There was much to see on the river, in terms of the beauty of nature. I imagine you would be inspired to paint.
Thank you for packing us snacks. I enjoyed them, as did xiongzhang and shufu. Please thank Jiang Yanli for us as well. I also was happy to see the small painting of bunnies you snuck into one of my qiankun pouches. It reminded me of eating spun sugar bunnies with you in the Yunping market.
We made so many good memories, and when you come to Gusu we will make many more.
I wish you good health and look forward to your next letter,
Lan Zhan

Part of the try to praise the mutilated world series
Spectre | leaves eddied over the earth’s scars
Notes: The title is again from the poem "Try to Praise the Mutilated World."  I wanted to explore how this would impact SiZhui, who is only just starting to reconnect with his first adopted dad.
------------
SiZhui feels awkward, standing with trays of food under the magnolia tree behind the jingshi. His father had asked him—almost begged, actually—to have lunch with Senior Wei today. The man wasn’t eating or sleeping well.
‘Grief,’ is all Hanguang-Jun said in explanation.
SiZhui understands grief. He watched his father grieve for 16 years and was blessed to see it end. He himself grieved that same length of time for memories lost to fever and trauma.
It turned out they had been grieving the same person, mostly. Like father, like son.
But now, as he watches Senior Wei sedately pet a rabbit on the porch of the jingshi, his normally sharp eyes distant and red-rimmed, his face pale… SiZhui remembers he’d seen this grief at the Burial Mounds so long ago, as the man had given up his entire world to protect him and the other Wen remnants.
He’s so distracted as to not notice SiZhui’s presence, not even when he calls out.
“Senior Wei?”
SiZhui knows he’s been sitting there, unmoving, for probably the entire morning since Hanguang-Jun left to finish preparations for their journey to Yunmeng. Magnolia petals lay against his robes, contrasting starkly with the black fabric. Enough to account for hours.
He moves closer, repeating the greeting, to no avail.
Surprising Senior Wei is never an excellent idea, would likely result in lunch being all over them. The man has spent too much time despised and fighting to survive, to fail to react if his attention isn’t drawn before SiZhui approaches. Enough of the juniors (including Jin Ling) have learned this by experience. And though the man only moves to defend, never to harm, SiZhui intends for this meal to wind up in their bellies.
“Xian-gege?” he tries, but again meets no response.
SiZhui sighs, not sure how to handle this. He went to Caiyi town for the food, ordering Senior Wei’s favorites, and though the talisman he’s attached will keep it warm, he knows it will taste better fresh. He’s even brewed his favorite spiced tea, the one with cardamom, fennel, ginger, cinnamon, and anise—what most in Gusu and especially Cloud Recesses consider far too piquant. SiZhui himself enjoys it with a little milk.
He takes one step closer, and notices something he didn’t before—Senior Wei has tear tracks on his face.
For a moment he’s seven years old again, peeking from the door of his room in the jingshi late at night, listening to his father play what he would later learn was Inquiry, watching him cry silently.
“A-Die!” wrenches from him before SiZhui can get ahold of himself.
He’s not sure whether the words or the tone do the trick, but Senior Wei jerks and turns to him with wide eyes.
“A-Yuan?”
After a moment, he attempts a smile, but it’s a ghost of what SiZhui knows his smile to be, a mask like the one he wore all those months upon his return, something he hides behind.
SiZhui places his trays on the porch, abandoning them in favor of wrapping his arms securely around the man who started his upbringing.
“I thought I’d have to call you a-Niang to get your attention,” he jokes.
The Yiling marketplace story represents the one time his fathers were together with him as a child, and he hopes to startle a laugh from Senior Wei.
He is disappointed. The smile becomes a shade less forced, but only briefly.
“Sorry, a-Yuan. How long were you calling for me?”
SiZhui reaches up to dab at his cheeks with a sleeve. He wants so badly to address Senior Wei’s behavior, but he doubts he’ll get him to eat if he does.
“Only a couple minutes. I came to eat lunch with you. I even went to Caiyi town for your favorites and brewed your favorite tea.”
He’s unspeakably relieved when he gets a genuine smile from that, even if that smile is still tinged with sorrow.
“Ah, my handsome son is spoiling me so,” Senior Wei teases.
SiZhui laughs and repositions the trays. He pours the tea, then serves him first, then himself, covering the dishes to keep them hot after. Senior Wei’s food is a vibrant red, just the way he likes it, while his own is much blander though still spicier than what is usually preferred in Cloud Recesses.
The movement of chopsticks from plate to mouth is a win, and he doesn’t mind when Senior Wei leans against him slightly, as though taking comfort in his presence. If SiZhui can offer that comfort, he will.
Sitting on the wooden patio, eating in comfortable silence with the man he considers his first father, the man who had been lost to them all for sixteen years, is a comfort to him as well.
SiZhui isn’t quite sure how long he takes to realize the only noise is his own chopsticks against porcelain, but when he realizes he turns to find Senior Wei staring into the distance, a morsel of food suspended between chopsticks halfway to his mouth. His bowl is more than half full still.
“Senior Wei?”
Senior Wei startles, the food slipping through his chopsticks and landing on his robe. He tries to smile again, but SiZhui sees the effort it takes.
“You don’t have to call me so formally,” he finally murmurs, the effort sliding away.
“So I can call you a-Die? Even in front of the other juniors?”
The ghost-smile flits across his face again, and SiZhui wonders if that’s the most he can hope for right now.
“Anytime you like. You can even call me a-Niang if you want.” Senior Wei sighs softly, setting his bowl back on the tray. “I’m sorry you went to such trouble for me, but I’m not very hungry.”
SiZhui has a memory of making a specific face at him as a toddler to get his way. Perhaps it’s Senior Wei’s influence at such a young age, but he’s just shameless enough to school his face into a worried pout.
“I’m worried about you, a-Die.”
He’s horrified when it backfires, and Senior Wei sobs. Where before his tears had been almost disturbingly silent, the raw emotion now is heart-rending.
Immediately he abandons his bowl, not even checking to make sure it stays upright, and pulls him into a hug. Senior Wei doesn’t fight it, just buries his face against SiZhui’s shoulder, shaking.
“I’m here, a-Die. I’m here.”
Senior Wei is murmuring apologies almost immediately, but SiZhui doesn’t dare let him go.
“It’s okay to cry, a-Die. You can cry as much as you need to.”
It was something Father had told him once upon finding him hiding to cry, letting him know that tears were not shameful, and the rule ‘Do not grieve in excess’ did not mean one couldn’t grieve at all. In those days, SiZhui didn’t know what he grieved, but Father had cried with him. It had helped.
“I don’t want to burden you,” Senior Wei whispers.
“You’re not a burden! Not ever. Father and I missed you so much all those years.”
SiZhui is almost afraid to hug him more tightly, he seems so fragile.
“Father played Inquiry all the time,” he tells him, rubbing his back in slow circles. “He never stopped searching for you, even though you didn’t respond.”
From the way Senior Wei stiffens, he wonders if Father never told him that. SiZhui hopes he hasn’t overstepped.
“He never told me that. I never heard it,” Senior Wei finally whispers. “I don’t think I was in any condition to hear it.”
SiZhui feels frozen; there aren’t many reasons a spirit would not hear Inquiry, and one of those is moving on. The others are too horrible to think about. But this is a-Die.
“A-Die… Tell me? Please?”
He almost doesn’t want to know, but he can’t try to help if he doesn’t. He will not let ignorance be an excuse, not with a-Die suffering.
Senior Wei is quiet for several minutes before he finally speaks. “A-Yuan, do you know how I died?”
“Sect Leader Jiang,” he answers immediately.
It was taught to all disciples, something he finds horrible now, that duty calls to kill a brother if he turns to evil. Knowing the truth of everything and regaining his memories, SiZhui wanted to be angry at Jiang WanYin. Only the man looked at his once-brother with complicated emotions that included longing. He knows it is not his place to judge.
But Senior Wei shakes his head.
“After shijie… watching the whole cultivation world fight over the pieces of the seal, greedy for power… Everyone was dead, and I thought you were too, and I just didn’t want to exist in this world anymore.”
Senior Wei shudders, seemingly lost in memory.
“A-Yuan, I was a suicide. I threw myself off a cliff at Nightless City.”
SiZhui can’t stifle a gasp. He feels like the earth has opened up under him.
“Lan Zhan tried to stop me, tried to save me, but I didn’t let him. It’s probably the worst thing I’ve ever done to him.”
His voice hitches.
“I don’t remember the sixteen years I was dead, but I suspect my soul shattered at my death, so I doubt there’s anything to remember. If Mo XuanYu hadn’t forced my soul back together through the ritual, the pieces likely would have eventually just faded away.”
SiZhui hears a sob, and it takes him a moment to realize it’s come from himself. It was too horrible, that a-Die could have gone forever, that Father would forever be without him even in future lifetimes, and that the cost to prevent that was Mo XuanYu’s soul. The grief he carries is so much more understandable now.
“A-Die, please don’t leave us again,” he whispers.
Senior Wei wipes at SiZhui’s cheeks gently with his sleeve, looking at him with regret. “I didn’t want to come back, at first. But I don’t want to leave now.”
He blurts, “Why wouldn’t you want to come back?” before he can stop himself.
A-Die’s tears overflow again. “My shijie was dead, my nephew orphaned, my fault. My shidi hated me. I failed the Wens. The sects wanted my head on a platter. I thought Lan Zhan despised me, too. I was alone, and the world sucked, and I’d just cause trouble again. Why come back?”
“Father never hated you,” is all SiZhui can think to say in response.
He wants to say more, that a-Die doesn’t cause trouble, that he wasn’t responsible for Jiang YanLi’s death or even Jin ZiXuan’s. There’s so much he wants to say, but words escape him. He knows a-Die still blames himself, and there’s nothing SiZhui can say to change that.
“Ah, a-Yuan. I know that now, but I’m, well, an idiot, so that took a while. But that’s why I ran away from Mo manor, and why I wore that mask. I thought nothing good would come from being recognized.”
SiZhui returns a-Die’s earlier gesture, wiping tears from his cheeks.
“But things are better now, right? Why are you so sad?”
A-Die sighs softly. “Shijie is still gone. Jiang Cheng still hates me. It was so long ago for everyone else, but not for me. For me, it will be her first birthday since her death.”
That a-Die missed sixteen years is an ever-present facet of SiZhui’s life, an absence that spanned most of his life, but sometimes it’s easy to forget the impact on a-Die; he’s only been alive again for less than a year, and much of that time was taken uncovering Jin GuangYao’s crimes and then travelling for a few months alone.
“That’s why you’re going to Lotus Pier,” SiZhui murmurs, realizing. “I’ll come with, a-Die. So you’ll have both Father and me with you.”
He knows a-Die hasn’t visited his home but once since he came back, that there are painful memories he must deal with. He doesn’t want him to face them, not alone. And while he’ll be with Father, SiZhui knows it can help to have more people, especially since a-Die feels Sect Leader Jiang hates him.
“You’re not alone, a-Die. You’re not.”
A-Die gifts him with a smile, a genuine one, and SiZhui lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“A-Yuan, you’re such a good boy.”
They stay like that, a-Die draped across his lap, and SiZhui remembers once, long ago, Aunt Qing telling him Xian-gege missed his sister. He remembers lotus seeds and blossoms, and a-Die barefoot with a smile. The memory is vague, pieced together flashes, but it’s there.
Lotuses had grown in Burial Mounds. Surely they could grow in Cloud Recesses, perhaps in one of the grassy areas behind the jingshi, somewhere a-Die could look and be reminded of his sister, even though she’s gone. While at Lotus Pier, he’ll learn how to grow lotuses. He’ll find out what kind a-Die would like best, even if it means talking to Sect Leader Jiang about it.
SiZhui glances down and finds that a-Die has fallen asleep against him, the dark circles under his eyes more pronounced than usual, and he resolves to stay still until Father comes, to let him sleep.
Maybe later, together as a family, they can get a-Die to eat more, help him through his grief, remind him he’s truly not alone.
He won’t ever be alone again.
