Hello! You are my go to expert for Night Court and Dan/Harry, so I would like to ask, which episodes would you recommend watching for particularly shippy Dan/Harry moments or storylines? Thank you <3

there are so many excellent danharry moments and storylines across all nine seasons, but here are my (very painstakingly selected) top five danharry episodes in chronological order:

1. S3E9-10 The Wheels of Justice (Part 1 + 2)

every time i think about this episode i go fully insane charlie kelly standing in front of the pepe silvia conspiracy board style. admittedly the first episode doesn't give us a lot of danharry content beyond harry smiling super fondly at dan while dan screams at bull's tiny tv, but the SECOND episode. jesus CHRIST. dan talking harry out of his slump in that pool hall........'you were good, harry! very good. you were impartial. you were fair. passionate. compassionate. understanding. and i admired you.'............dan hugging harry after harry apologized and said he would come back to court........the way harry and dan looked at each other after harry's line about taking the good with the bad no matter how bad the bad gets...........dan's smile while harry tells mac that dan is the only reason he left the pool hall..........and then. of course. this.

what is their DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. S4E1 The Next Voice You Hear...

'emily,' night court nation says. 'this is not a danharry-centric episode.' you are correct! 'then why is this on your list?' because after harry found out his mother was dead, mac's first instinct was to call dan, and dan dropped whatever he was doing to come and console harry. they're best friends!!!!!!!!! and i cry about it Every Day

3. S4E5-6 Dan's Operation (Part 1+2)

this is THE danharry episode. every other danharry episode go home (except please don't, you're all wonderful). seriously though if someone told me when i first started watching night court that harry would fall asleep on a comatose dan's chest after begging him to wake up (AFTER they had a huge argument earlier in the episode) and dan's first instinct upon waking up is to stroke harry's hair and also Not Move Or Say Anything Because Harry Is Sleeping and THEN they would have ANOTHER argument that ended in both of them saying 'i love you' to each other, i would have died on the spot. and then i watched these episodes and i DID die on the spot. larroquette won his third emmy award for his performance in these eps and it is extremely well deserved.

4. S5E14 I'm OK, You're Catatonic/Schizophrenic

a danharry episode that raises more questions than it answers. what do you mean dan just randomly took a nap on harry's conference table. what do you mean dan kidnapped mel torme for harry. what do you mean dan said re: his kidnapping of mel torme '[harry's] gonna kiss me on the lips for this'. what do you MEAN dan handcuffed mel torme to a chair using 'a trick harry taught him' with 'magic shackles' that HE KNOWS CHAFE and WHAT DO YOU MEAN HARRY DOESN'T EVEN HAVE MAGIC SHACKLES AT ALL. SO WHAT WAS DAN TALKING ABOUT. someday i will get a ouija board so i can talk to reinhold weege from beyond the grave and ask him hey man!!! what was up with this episode!!!!!!!!! and also harry destroying dan's car in retaliation for dan accidentally destroying his mel torme record collection (on top of harry strangling dan upon receiving the news and also screaming I'M GOING TO EAT THAT MAN'S EYEBROWS) is proof that these two match each other's freak like no one else and that's why they should be endgame, thank you and good night.

5. S5E22 + S6E1-2 Danny Got His Gun (Parts 1-3)

1980s sitcoms were operating on a whole other level because if even an iota of this plotline happened to one of my otps on any of my currently airing shows the entire fandom would burst into flames. dan is presumed dead!!! his plane goes down north of hudson bay!!! and harry is the first one to receive the news!!! and the first one to receive further telegrams from the army and also dan's belongings!!! in his will dan left harry his 'heartfelt gratitude'!!! harry had to plan dan's memorial service!!! he had to write dan's eulogy!!! he had to sit there and watch everyone in attendance including the funeral director (barring roz) not be able to say a single nice thing about his best friend!!! then said best friend CRASHES HIS OWN MEMORIAL SERVICE!!! dan is alive!!! he has a beard!!! he smells awful!!! which i will maintain to my last breath is the only thing that prevented harry from kissing the breath out of dan right there in the funeral home!!! they!!! looked!!! at!!! each!!! other!!! like!!! this!!!

Just saw someone on TikTok saying the "You could live a thousand lives and never deserve that boy" saying that Cat King, Monty and Charles don't deserve Edwin and I've never seen so much bullshit in my life (as far as I can remember)

How come you throw down 3 character arcs and ignoring at least Charles' temper and context to put above on a pillar one character who has bad things as well.

Obviously spoilers about the whole series

Cat King: he started wrong and pressured Edwin on things he didn't know

There's an analysis post here that explains why the punishment made sense. Edwin was warned of not messing around with the cats. Cat King of course had moments where he made Edwin obvious and clearly uncomfortable, and either stopped there or stepped back. Even between all his flirty aura and wanting to play and be loved by this Twink Ghost, he still respected Edwin and was pretty much consensual (the bracelet not because again, it's just the punishment because of what Edwin did to the cats), like proposing counting cats instead of pleasing him physically as soon as he realized Edwin wasn't in that lane.

By the end of the season, he's the one that changes the less respecting from where they started (I think). He's still a flirty, charming, iconic, still respecting and asking for the hug, this time only calling him from the distance because he knows the context, they're mourning Niko, he can't be that flirty or attention seeker, he knows how much she meant for Ed. The flowers scene where it's both flowers for him but also for her (the flower's meanings about rebirth, purity, innocence. I think it's how Niko was for this world, but also huge kudos to this Reddit when I was looking for the flower scene)

Monty: tricked Edwin so the witch could have her revenge.

Monty is a Crow Familiar. He ofc owes loyalty to his witch. He was turned into a human with the condition of helping his master. And he catches feelings. He's been a human since what? Less than a week? He gets hooked by Edwin. He loves Edwin. When they kiss and Edwin says he doesn't love him back, he's hurt. And he's Esther's familiar. What did she do once she didn't get what she wanted? Plan on revenge. He's still hurt, he thinks Edwin didn't care about his feelings. He even said they shouldn't be friends anymore.

Damn, he even went along deeper even thinking that they wouldn't get the case since they were Ace Detectives, until he heard that the fungus ate ghosts/spectrals so this wasn't an easy revenge. He tried to lead them/him away from it. Then Cat King interrupted and well, shit went down. More hurt feelings, more disgraces. He gets back to Esther who dislikes that her dear crow familiar was on the side of Edwin and caught feelings. He didn't want to feel like that, he didn't ask to be hurt, didn't want to be human and have feelings. Ofc he couldn't be with Edwin as long as Esther is his witch, she still has control over him. And yet he tried to go against her orders. He even helped Charles getting away on last ep.

Charles: said cruel words, wishing he never died and throwing in his face that Ed would never be able to keep the group together because he can't and he lacks Char's charisma.

Charles was fresh from living on a loop that caught him because his reaction to trauma was too strong. He had to live(?) and watch over and over again a family suffering for the exact same thing that reminded him his living life. Even worse, he had to experience on bucle him trying to stop it just to be interrupted and made him watch it until the father was done, looking at the corpses and then the gunshot. Tell me about feeling helpless and useless when you are stuck on a loop where your attempt of trying to help it's not working and you are seeing it over and over again. Ofc he was more than upset for not being able to help, to stop Crystal from getting hurt, from Edwin lying to him because Ed was troubled in his mind, and Night Nurse reminding him the physical violence he lived, how he died.

Charles and Edwin died at 16. Sixteen. How many things they could've experienced but never happened? They'll never get to grow up. He died and he never had a chance to stand up against his dad and protect his mom. He lost the chance to keep the bullies away from others. He lost all the sensations, he lost most of his senses. Not being able to enjoy things because he can't feel them. He misses spaghetti, he said he might miss kissing (he and Crystal kissed, he said he didn't feel anything but well, as long as she does, he's okay with it). He misses being able to have people his age to hang around. And everything was taken away from him.

Ofc he tries to be positive about it, he tries to be useful to make up for not helping when he was alive. He didn't want to be like Brad and Hunter, but he wanted to be that cool guy loved by everyone and was an actual good person. You can't hold on a smile for too long without it turning into a fake one after having all of that. All those years he shoved away the familiar violence, until he had to live it again, two times, and see that he couldn't stop it. He's hurt by everyone (Edwin lying to him, the whole Crystal's case still unsolved, etc), and he reached the limit. Are you telling me he would just smile again and pretend it was nothing? He'd been doing that for so long, and now he was unable to hide it again.

And last but not least, Edwin.

Edwin Payne, sassy Edwardian Era Teenager who has an ego so big you can see it from space, plays hard to get on the cases, thinks he's better/smarter than anyone (one thing is being it, other is claiming it), thinking everyone is on his same level or page (the whole Does that look blue to you? We have the same left! Implying that what he says and knows are too obvious that forgets not everyone thinks like him. I relate to that soooo bad) Shoved away more than once Crystal, has more salt than the Dead Sea, calls out more than once Charles for trying to keep Crystal around, when Jenny was calling Crystal out for running or whatever he was shocked that Crystal wasn't paying attention to him like how dares she ignore me. And don't get me started with invalidating everyone's feelings when they said they were hurt or living a nightmare... We got it. Hell was a literal hell. But you're dealing right now with a girl who's around 16-18 and you're trying to solve her case, not a competition about "Who suffered the most".

Ofc at the end of the season he's finally fond of Crystal, he was finally accepting her as part of the team even without her powers, he's now able to express better his feelings, better at setting and saying things and stop assuming everyone is on his same level, he starts caring about people like Monty (even after breaking his crow heart, he apologizes and tries to explain that he was new to that as well and things could've been with them staying as friends until Cat King made his entrance and the reveal, Cat King with the whole Cat Mouse Game he was able to again, start accepting he has feelings and being the way they are is not bad, able to set boundaries, even allow himself to play silly things like actually counting the cats.

Edwin had to go through a lot of things to be able to actually be open and grow as a character. I feel everyone likes Edwin at the end of the season or praise his Salty Sassy Edwardian Teenager phase, and it's not bad, but please do not throw down other characters to get him higher. Or at least, don't throw them down like that. Do not treat him like it's flawless, just because you like his flaws.

I mean, I feel like I'm not writing nothing we haven't seen, like stating the obvious. Maybe a rewatch to see better the character arcs?

so i've just joined the pjo series discourse on sm (i've read all the books) so maybe people might have already said this but i feel like the monster fights are kinda underwhelming ?? the fights themselves but the atmosphere around them too. i'm just going to say it point by point to be clearer :

Mrs. Dodds: she's the first monster and threat of the show. i was waiting for something scary and surprising, that would have terrified percy or something. but instead the "reveal" was slow, and there wasn't even a fight, he just kind of opened the sword (even tho we don't even see him doing it) and she just. dies like that ?? it was really easy and i get that they can't just kill percy in the first ep but there wasn't even a bit of struggle or anything. tbh this first fight really dissapointed me. there was mystery that creates an intrigue but she just wasn't scary or a menace imo (EDIT : I HAVE NOW REREAD THE SCENE AND IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THIS IS EXACTLY HOW THE FIGHT PLAYS OUT IN THE BOOK (extract down below) so forget everything i said in this part, i'm sorry. )

2. The minotaur : i liked this one much more than the first one, the car chase was thrilling and the atmosphere of the scene was really cool. i've only got one little thing to say about it, but i think it's just a me thing and i'm nitpicking (idk how to make gifs so i hope you can picture it in your head) :

when sally takes percy's jacket to lure the minotaur away from the boys and uses it as a red cape like in a corrida, i think it kinds of take the attention away from the fear of the monster in itself by being comedic. AGAIN i know i'm nitpicking here but why not say it.

(also i regret that the last scene was so far away from the camera and from the camp border. i know it's bc it's percy's pov but i loved percy's desperation in the movie (I KNOW IT'S BAD) when he's failing to save his mother and finally sees her (and her emotions) when she is gets taken away from him.)

3. Medusa : i LOVED what they tried to do with medusa and how they tried to make us sympathise with her. however, the fight was REALLY dissapointing to me. it kind of happened from nowhere. it's implied that it's annabeth plan but it really happened way too fast and did not give enought time for the viewer to appreciate the threat that medusa can be. it felt way to easy for them to beat MEDUSA. the fight lasted 5 seconds max and it felt shy in a way, like as if they didn't not want to fuck it up.

+ special mention : 4. Clarisse: I'M NOT SAYING SHE'S A MONSTER, I'M JUST PUTTING HER HERE BC TECHNICALLY SHE WAS A THREAT TO PERCY. i like dior's acting, idk anything about her outside of the show but i'm going to be honest : not knowing the cast at all, at first i immediately thought she was drew 😭. she IS a really pretty girl but for me she doesn't emanate clarisse's ares' daughter vibe. when her spear broke she was so GOOD, but appart from that she's just really chill i think ? like she's not menacing, she just kind of a mean girl bully (which clarisse is ig but she's not a menace enough imo) and tbh i think she's just not as "rough" as i think she could have been.

tldr : i think the fights were not scary enough and did not set a good tone for the series. they were also too easy and fast for them to be enjoyable.

of course i still enjoy this show a lot so i will be watching the next episodes and the rest of it so maybe there will be improvements. please yell what you guys think !!

and Sean and White got together and Yok and Dan got together and we have two sad ex-girlfriends(ish) and Gram looking on in longing and BLACK WOKE UP and they're all being followed cause Todd knows way more about them now and and and

(Also yes another update already, it's crazy! Though we're trying to book out a time to watch the last 3 together so that may take a while...or may be this weekend *crosses fingers hopefully* though that may shift watching Only Friends and other Sunday shows to like...Monday or later ahhhh)

Also I did not do a between 8 and 9 update but I totally guessed Dan was the officer who shot Seans dad.

GMMTV does such good foreshadowing and pay off I feel so satisfied and excited by every reveal.

We have two heartbroken girls that I really hope we spend more time on cause they have been amazing characters so far. Namo took finding out about Sean and White so well and then she was so sad ugh.

and then Eugene also struggling with her dance routine because she's confused/heartbroken about Black

I'm so curious how that Black/Eugene/Gram triangle may play out now that Black's awake, I mean he still broke up with Eugene because he wanted her safe, and now he's nearly died I doubt that will change...

I have more thoughts on Black but lets back track to Plot again for a minute

Sean and Tawi face off in the bathroom happened

Oh and Todd was trying to get back on track with figuring out what the gang is up too in episode 8

Plus at the end of Ep 9 everyone was being followed...Oh and Sean is now spying on Tawi? Although not a whole lot of actual spying seemed to be happening...

Now I know that Tawi is also big coorporation here but I now have no idea how much of all this is just Todd or is Todd working for/with Tawi? That seems like the most likely scenario but I don't know for sure.

How much was Tawi actually involved in the drug trafficking that Seans father was involved in?

And when/how will Sean find out that officer Dan is the one who shot him? I can already picture the explosion.

And as much as I want (so very desperately) to watch the next episodes. I am also kind of grateful that I have to stop. Because this is SUCH A GOOD POINT to sit and imagine at.

How will Black and White be revealed to their friends? To Sean? To Euguene to everyone. What about Black and Whites parents? Are they going to come back into the story?

(OMG Black's mum, who White is 100% going to meet in his place next ep, will he meet her as White? Or pretend to be Black??)

Also Black's gotta feel betrayed about Todd too. Oh and Paprika's point about Black and White being thought and action, will we get to see them come together now, despite how much Black want's White to stay out of it? Is White going to meet the friends AS WHITE?? (I am dying to have Sean see him all put together with his glasses on). The emotional pay off that I can feel coming is so good, are they going to be shocked and betrayed? are they going to finally understand? I honestly have no idea and I want to know SO MUCH.

But I also just want to sit in this anticipation a little bit longer and let my imagination run wild. Looking forward to it all coming together

Murder drones au pt 2

Long awaited follow up for my murder drones au, of which was kindly requested by @burgertron17.

I appreciate the patients you've had with me, I and I apologize for the wait. But enough talk, lets get into it.

⚠️Spoiler warning for murder drones. Duh⚠️

lot of text ahead. like A LOT! beware!

So first an explanation of how the timeline is played out in comparison to murder drones canon.

Macy isn't really "bullied" in the same sense Uzi is, but she does experience a disconnect with the other kids. There is a rumor going around that she's half disassembly drone, which would explain why she's so tall. This one singular rumor is why she isn't outright bullied, they're low-key kinda scared of her.

The gun incident goes as followed in the canon. Aaron and Lance walk by and see Macy is hurt. Macy talks about the outdoors and how she's planning on sneaking out to get the last part she needs for her gun to actually work. Bottom panel of the lance drawing plays out here.

As the exit the outer door Aaron makes an off comment of "I bet Lance is worried sick." Hard cut to top left corner of Lance drawing, insert elevator esque like music. Hard cut back Aaron and Macy. Moment of silence. Macy says "Eh we'll make it quick.

They find the piece and blah blah blah.

Ok I'm not gonna write every single change I made cuz that will make this post wayyyy to long. now I don't even know if posts have a word limit but I don't wanna find out. Also cuz. didn't change overly a lot, most of the stuff still goes the same way. Its not a roots deep au like my other ones.

Instead of Clays comment that everyone thinks hes useless and terrible he just casually flexes how many kills hes gotten, followed by an awkward laugh, showing how he isn't actually enjoying any of it. Instead of him telling Wanda his name he just says "welp, guess I'll stay guard and . . . look for other drones. or something. Also cut out the whole crush comment cuz in this context ew. Just have him stare into space is sum idk. Also In the J flashback just have them have a very awkward conversation, and right when Clay is about to ask him something he flies off. Keep Jestro as the leader or not Idk

instead of Clay firing hearts (cuz that would be weird) just a puff of smoke comes out. He's too tense too shoot her. he says ". . .Listen! im sure we can talk it out like civilized-" And then the bomb. or rocket. whatever it is.

Obviously Jestro is a lot less menacing and brash. Where the failed monologue comes in he more so only apologizes and tries to brush it off in a "don't take this personally" manner

only difference in episode two is that Lance, Aaron and Axl is there. Place them in any situation as you please. Expect when chad or whatever his name is almost dies. that's Aaron.

It's Fletch and Izzy who try and give Macy a make over. Fletch is probably speaking English thought. Also obviously they're a lot less mean and any off putting comments is Izzy trying to seem cool. She looks up to Macy.

Axl isn't in the room when the attack happens. Returns right after, gets rather angry cuz rightfully so- all his hard work has been destroyed. Lance comforts him with a pat on the back.

Lance was the one who tried to get Wanda killed. Ended up saving her. they bond. they're besties now.

Didnt change anything for ep 3. Oh expect the hot comment. Lance instead says. "Dramatic. . . Justified reaction? . . he doesn't appreciate you enough"

Where N is, Wanda is instead. Given how Clay and Fletch was built after everything. Monstrous as Cyn. Marlok as Tessa. And Jestro as J. Macy ended up hacking into Wanda and then connected Clay into it so he could see what happened too.

Not much change for episode 6. I dunno who the souther creepster is. Didn't even make a sketch. I might. probably won't. If you have any suggestion do tell.

During the Flashback in episode 7 we obviously have Hama (Queen halbert) and the other one I didn't think much for either. So place whoever there too. Yet again, if you have any suggestions, do tell.

Where Doll gets killed Wanda rescues Fletch last second. Monstrous could barley figure out what happened and decided that he has more important things to do.

If you ship Clay x Macy, keep it the same, if not, change it to "Are best friends. we hang out a lot." Or something. I dunno

Not much change for the finale. The reason Clay is scared is mainly cuz he just knows what hes capable of from his mom's memories. "Wanda says: Its monstrous! You know, from when- you know what I mean!

Where we get the flashback of doll dying instead have Fletch enter the room. Izzy says "Woah! Cool limbs! How that happen" Fletch lets out a "um . . " Flash back of him waking up with the new limbs and then experiencing a existential crisis. He shrugs and says "Its a long story"

W lost him during an attack. He was raised by worker drones. He isn't very confident with his limbs and is a bit clumsy. (robots built to be JUST disassembly drones don't work well with worker drone limbs.

He was attacked by AD (Absolute destruction) but W saved him last second and gave him proper limbs

F (after being converted) He still hasn't fully figured how to make everything work, but he's already gaining confidence within himself

Macy

Daughter to Eggred who built the bunker. Freezer out because she's weirdly tall and gets called a "Wannabe disassembly drone"

your dialogue for maria’s reaction is so so accurate too, and you can really see tommy just looking at her, saying her name, because there’s nothing else he can say.

and when tommy and maria’s son grows up, and he’s wondering why his dad left, and he doesn’t understand because he can’t remember reader. he doesn’t remember her looking after him, only has the names on the chalkboard that’s still set up on the mantle of the home he shares with his mother only. because maria wouldn’t welcome tommy back after he left. couldn’t. a part of her resents him for not saving r too, although she’d never say it out loud.

Topical Character Study: Sacrifice (feat. Brother Cadfael, Thorin Oakenshield, al'Lan Mandragoran, Almorra Soulkeeper, Trahearne, Gorrik and Blish)

My new interest in the Cadfael Chronicles (I just rewatched ep 3 today; hopefully I'll be getting the books for Christmas) has made me do some thinking about the types of characters I get into.

I've described by 'type' as a collection of all the traits shared between the people I've become obsessed with. But Brother Cadfael not only defies a lot of these traits, but the ones he does possess are completely irrelevant to why I like him.

So now it's time to investigate more deeply, this time by reflecting on the places that have the most emotion surrounding it.

Brother Cadfael

I first became interested in Cadfael when he looked full in the face of a leper and did not flinch or look away. A minute later he was speaking of how God looks on the heart and not the external appearance. It takes a lot of self-control to keep oneself from having some reaction; when I saw it I thought he must be having a great struggle inside of himself to appear calm - I saw it not as a false mask, but as a sacrifice for the sake of showing love. I can't imagine how touched the leper must have felt, showing his old friend his marred face and having his friend accept him with as much warmth and love as ever before, if not more.

What really gets me about al'Lan Mandragoran is his fury when he finds the woman he loves is about to put herself into danger; the way he tries to restrain his expression of these feelings because he doesn't understand them (or doesn't want to feel them) but fails, because he does love her. And then, he forces himself to let her go anyway, because he knows she can handle herself. He doesn't let her go easily; but he lets her go because she has to, that is her duty and he understands duty. That is a sacrifice on his part, a sacrifice of his emotion for truly loving her and letting her pursue what she knows is right.

In addition and on a lesser scale - because there is not nearly as big a window into this part of his life than the other - his own dedication to his dead kingdom and his duty is staggering. There is no point where he regains something that he sacrificed for this mission to show how much he's lost for it, but he is a cold, hard warrior who has given most of his life to his calling. The Aes Sedai in his life are all afraid he will throw his life away following it, but that is his duty. I really wish we had seen him given his heart's desire so we could see how much he treasured the things he'd given up to follow his duty.

Trahearne

I first became interested in Trahearne because he died, because I had to kill him. But, upon further investigation, I liked him because of his dedication to Orr. It goes far beyond the fact that he's being forced into it (which some people prefer to emphasize); I think he really does love the land. He's made countless sacrifices for it; he's been alone all his life and never even made any progress.

And then the Commander comes along and doesn't see a terrifying necromancer or anything else people avoid him for, but instead a friend, someone to help and support, someone to encourage and uplift. Trahearne's response to this kindness, of having found someone who understands his dedication to his duty, shows me he has felt the sacrifices he's made for Orr and has done it anyway. It shows me he has decided to do his duty despite the discomfort and the pain, and that tells me that he knows he has chosen to do the right thing, that he believes in what he's doing, and that he won't waver when it gets hard.

This conviction is borne out in his last minutes of life, when he is fighting to prevent Mordremoth from returning to terrorize the sylvari - that was all he said. He didn't say 'I'm fighting for my mind and soul, please release me' - he said Mordremoth would come back. He didn't say 'I'm all but dead anyway, just kill me!' - he said his fellow sylvari would suffer. He didn't give up because it was hard or difficult; he had to die because it was the right thing to do, and he didn't give up when the Commander refused, but insisted anyway.

Thorin Oakenshield

What got me about Thorin is his insistence on doing his mission his way; he isn't going to let anyone else mess with something that is his responsibility. That is, in part, a flawed outlook, but it shows that he felt responsible for making sure the thing he was devoted to got done. At the end of the Battle of the Five Armies, after he has been mortally wounded, he staggers to an outlook to see how the battle is going. Only after seeing the victory in progress does he allow himself to literally collapse where he stands. In An Unexpected Journey, he is reluctant to trust Bilbo; this mission is important to him and he doesn't want Bilbo to mess it up. Only after Bilbo showed an understanding of Thorin's mission and the motivations behind it did Thorin welcome Bilbo into the Company. Thorin wasn't shy of rejecting a relationship that might jeopardize the mission; but once Bilbo proved himself worthy, Thorin embraced friendship with everything he had. Like with Trahearne, this shows me that he was putting the mission before his personal desires.

The tragedy of the dragon sickness was that it twisted Thorin's personality backwards: putting his personal desires (pride) before his commitment to his cause (regaining Erebor and restoring it to its former glory), and had to be bought into his former dedication by manipulating his personal desire for the Arkenstone. When he came back to himself, he returned to his former self and back to placing greater importance on his mission than his pride

al'Lan Mandragoran

What really gets me about al'Lan Mandragoran is his fury when he finds the woman he loves is about to put herself into danger; the way he tries to restrain his expression of these feelings because he doesn't understand them (or doesn't want to feel them) but fails, because he does love her. And then, Lan forces himself to let her go anyway, because he knows she can handle herself. He doesn't let her go easily; but he lets her go because she has to, that is her duty and he understands duty. That is a sacrifice on his part, a sacrifice of his emotion for truly loving her and letting her pursue what she knows is right.

In addition and on a lesser scale - because there is not nearly as big a window into this part of his life than the other - Lan's own dedication to his dead kingdom and his duty is staggering. There is no point where he regains something that he sacrificed for this mission to show how much he's lost for it, but he is a cold, hard warrior who has given most of his life to his calling. The Aes Sedai in his life are all afraid he will throw his life away following it, but that is his duty. I really wish we had seen him given his heart's desire so we could see how much he treasured the things he'd given up to follow his duty.

Gorrik (and Blish)

To me, Blish's sacrifice was compelling: he asked the Commander to leave him to die so that he could power the dragon tracker with his mechanical body. He had seen a greater purpose when he met Taimi and had dedicated himself to that.

Gorrik had spent a lot of time building a golem body for his brother. That was a huge sacrifice for him because then he had to look at his brother's mind trapped inside a machine - no easy thing for anyone. But he did it because otherwise Blish would die. When Blish did actually die, Gorrik's response was a heartwrenching whisper of "but I saved him." He'd sacrificed so much so that Blish would not die, but then Blish died anyway. Even after this, however, Gorrik, continued to aid the cause when he had little to no personal stake in it: he would continue the work his brother started.

Almorra Soulkeeper

Almorra founded the Vigil to fight the dragons. The Vigil's motto is some must fight so that all may be free. This inherently implies a sacrifice; some must fight - a sacrifice that might cost your life - for the freedom of those who do not fight. Not only is it a sacrifice, it's a sacrifice for people who are not, themselves, sacrificing.

She spent nearly ten years fighting dragons that weren't the dragon she had a personal vendette with. And even after that, she kept fighting. It was after she had proven this part of herself - that she would keep sacrificing, not for revenge, but because it was the right thing to do - that she finally lost her life. It was thought that she'd fallen fighting dragon minions, that Bangar and Ryland had come along after and given her the proper respect and buried her.

But then it was discovered that she had not lost her life fighting dragons, but defending herself from Bangar and Ryland - the people who should have been her allies, the people who, despite our animosity, we had thought would have shown her kindness. It was the most unjust death - the most pointless, meaningless death - because it was not a sacrifice for something she believed in, but betrayal from those who should have acted like decent people.

So it seems the central determining factor to why I like characters is the theme of duty and dedication - revealed through sacrifice. The degree of a person's dedication can be seen through the amount the person is willing to sacrifice in pursuit of it. Because the characters are giving a thing up, we do not see how much it meant to the characters unless we give it to them despite their sacrifice and see how much they treasure the gift.

(I did not include Forgal Kernsson on this list because his sacrifice and personality never triggered emotion in me; rather I came to like him through my own writing.)

ep 10: I'm only here for Wand

5th of July, 2023, a few hours later:

A voice sizzled on the Quinjet.

May: Everyone ties up, we're landing, stay safe.

The Quinjet vertically got down, and they could get out of it safely.

Fury was there to welcome back Sam to the compound. He opened his arms largely like he wanted to give her a hug, a smile on his face like rarely he had. He was a tall black man, with almost no hair on his head, and he always was wearing sunglasses, even in the dark. Probably to hide his left eye, which one was injured, no one really knows how. Some say he fought a Skrull, others say it was a Kree, there were multiple theories, but he never answered to anyone asking him the question.

Sam stayed impassive, she didn't really want to be here anyway, she only wanted her old life back, without super-heroes coming in her apartment by the window to ask her why she wasn't already back in the super-heroes team. This kind of event, that seemed pretty normal to Romanoff, was the type of thing Sam didn't want in her life anymore. Or maybe it was just because she was feeling like no one really liked her in this team?

Fury: Welcome back, Sam! I'm glad you're back here! It's been a long time! Happy you finally changed your mind to not come back.

Sam: Let's just be clear: I'm here only for Wanda. Whatever, I'm not even staying, once everything comes in a normal state, I'll leave.

Fury's smile evaporated. His arms get back down along his body.

Fury: Well, at least you're here to help to handle this situation. Come with me, we need to talk about the situation, the plan, and the team.

Sam followed him in the strategy room with Daisy, and saw Natasha. The blond girl jumped back, and everyone in the room was able to see the anger on her face. If a gaze could kill, the Russian spy would already be dead.

Sam: What the hell is- Please don't tell me she's coming.

Natasha: Oh but I am, and you'll have to deal with it sweetheart, 'cause we'll have to work together.

Steve: Come on, we will have to cooperate, so don't be rude and don't fight together, just act like you actually liked each other, remember how it was when you two were nice to each other? That's what I want. Hey Daisy, how are you? I didn't know you'd be on this mission too.

Daisy: Hey Rogers, I'm fine and you? I'm not on this mission, I'm just doing my report, I left after that, I need a shower anyway.

She went to the other side of the room, letting Steve, Natasha, Sam and Fury around the table. Maria Hill joined them, and started to give information about the mission.

Hill: So. Wanda. She left on the 15th of June.

Steve: I don't think that's where you should start.

Hill: Where do you think I should start? Go ahead.

Steve: Before. Everything that happened, all this situation we are facing right now started way before she left. It started when Sam left in fact.

Sam: Oh wonderful, I'm gonna be THE one responsible now.

Steve: That's not what I said, but the fact is that Wanda started to be not good when you left. Then Barton left in retirement again. Then Natasha went on a mission undercover. She couldn't talk to Wanda because her coms were watched by the enemy. Wanda lost the 3 people she was the closest to since her brother died. Come on guys, it's obvious that's the reason she had a mental breakdown.

Hill: You're not wrong.

Sam: Yeah well, that's what I said, that's on me.

Steve: Not only. It's on the whole team, we are supposed to support and help each other, we failed Wanda. She felt lonely, she left, we didn't know where she was at first...

Hill: But on the 22th June, we found out there was an anomaly in a little town named Westview.

She opened files on her tablet, and a map of Westview and a few other documents appeared on the board in front of them.

Hill: A lot of people didn't show up for their job for a few days, and they all were living in Westview. So a team went on the field to see what's going on, but they weren't able to come IN.

Sam looked at her, confused.

Sam: What? Why?

Steve: There's a, how did they call it again?

Hill: The hex, because of the shape of hexagonal.

Sam: What is that?

Hill: It's... kind of a box, I don't really know how to describe it, but nobody can come in or out of this city.

Sam, slowly: I don't really see how I can help.

She wasn't aggressive, angry or bored, she was just surprised and confused, mostly confused.

Hill: It's coming, we figured out that the hex only could have been created by the powerful power of witchcraft. We looked for video surveillance around Westview, and guess who we found, driving in the direction of Westview?

Sam: Wanda I guess?

Hill: Bingo.

Sam: So...? Why am I here?

Steve: Because you were her best friend, nobody was closer to her than you, even Natasha.

Hill: We need you to help us to calm her down and put the thing back to normal.

Sam: Ok-ay, how are we doing this?

Hill: You, Rogers and Romanoff are going to Westview.

Sam: Okay, but you said nobody can come in or out of the Hex.

Hill: Yeah, but Wanda made the Hex, so maybe one of you can come in or find a way to. Do whatever you want except kill people you could have let live, but find a way to turn off this Hex and put the situation together.

Sam: Why Romanoff and Steve? I mean, you need me because I was closer to her, I get it, but why them especially?

Hill: Romanoff and Clint were the 2 closest to her behind you, Clint is retired so to put all in our favor we need you and her, plus she's smart and a spy, always useful. Steve is calm, he avoids fighting if possible, we need someone who is not running to the fight, Wanda is stronger and more powerful to anyone, we don't want to have to fight her.

Sam winced but nodded, it made sense, even if she hated to have to work with the Russian spy. Hill looked at her, then to Steve and Natasha.

Hill: Any other question? No? You're leaving tomorrow at 7AM, don't be late, we don't have time for that, you should rest tonight.

Everybody left the room. Sam first. Natasha came after her, running in the corridor to be at her level.

Natasha: Sam!

She caught her arm to make her look at her. Sam got free from her, but didn't look at her though, she continued to walk away.

Sam, cold as never: I don't wanna talk to you, Romanoff.

Natasha: You don't have to talk, you can just listen, I owe you some apologies I think, can we-

Sam turned to face her, and answered, colder than ever.

Sam: I don't think you get it, that I don't want to talk to you is one thing, but I don't want to hear anything from you, I don't want to know anything about you, I don't want you in my life anymore, and I don't give a fuck about what you think anymore, am I clear?

Natasha's shoulders sagged, she looked at the floor sadly.

Sam walked away, but she hadn't done 3 feet before she heard a voice behind her.

Natasha: You will have to figure out how to support me, because we are going to work together, no matter if we want it or not.

Sam didn't do anything that made appear she heard.

Later.

Sam was in her bedroom, looking through the window.

Daisy passed her face across the door barely opened, calm and friendly as usual, she knocked and came in.

Daisy: Hey.

Sam looked at her. She was wearing her usual black jacket, and jeans. She cut her brown hair since Sam left the S.H.I.E.L.D., it now was long 'til her chin, she was pretty like that.

Sam: Hey.

Daisy: What happened with Natasha? I thought you two were friends?

She talked with a friendly tone, she wasn't aggressive, just wondering.

Sam: Yeah, well, that's what I used to believe too. Until she told me I didn't deserve to be in their team, that I was a stupid child who didn't have the shoulders, the guts or whatever it needed to be super-heroes, and she should have listened to Tony and agreed with him at first when he said I didn't belong here. I thought she was my friend, but apparently it seems that she can't even bear me being around her. 5 minutes before, she was telling me she was here for me gngngn, seems pretty hypocritical, no?

Daisy: That's weird. What happened in between for her to change her speech like this??

Sam: Hmmm I think I told her and Wand' I didn't want to stay here. Wanda said she wanted me to stay, I told her that we don't always have what we want, which, now that I think about it, wasn't nice at all. Then Natasha said something like 'no joke Sherlock', she was pissed and we argued, I wasn't nice, that's true, but she was absolutely horrible. Plus she came to my apartment by my window while a friend of mine was there, threatening her, throwing my whole relation to this person in jeopardy.

So, no, I'm not her friend, because she's not mine, apparently she never was, contrary to what I used to believe, and it's not going to be better now I'm back.

Sam wasn't aggressive either, she seemed a bit off, like tired of this situation. She was still mad against the red haired, but what Daisy saw was mostly tiredness.

Daisy: Is that why you left?

Sam: Nah, I left before that.

Daisy: What? I thought you were talking here?

Sam: Mhm, it was here.

Daisy: I- I don't get it.

Sam: It's complicated, I left a first time, then came back because I figured out that I don't have any green card, passport or any way to come back to France legally, so I came back so they could drive me to France, and it's at this moment, when I came back for them to bring me back home, that I had this fight with Romanoff and Wanda... Hm, Wanda didn't fight, she was just here, we were talking together before fighting.

Daisy: Okay, but why did you leave at first?

Sam didn't answer immediately. She played with an elastic, the kind she used for her hair.

Daisy came closer to her, and put her hand on her shoulder.

Daisy: Hey

Sam closed her eyes for a while. When she reopened it, they were filled with tears.

Sam: I left because I was useless.

Her voice broke saying this. A tear dropped off her right eye.

Daisy, softly: Heyy sweetie. I don't think you were useless. They would have sent you home otherwise, you know, with one of these watches to call you when needed.

Sam shrugged her shoulders, and wiped up the tears on both her cheeks.

Daisy took her in her arms, and hugged her really tough.

door i trust your taste implicitly so i am THIS close to watching wheel of time even though i thought it looked dumb in the trailer i saw. but please could you tell me what it's uhhhh about? i have seen so many very pretty gifsets but i could not even begin to guess what the plot is & i'm just not ready for that kind of commitment if i don't sort of know what im getting into

i just actually watched the trailer for the first time, and yeah i don't think i would have watched it off of that. i started watching wheel of time because i was very intrigued by images of Nynaeve and Lan, and for the first 3 episodes i largely played games on my phone and texted my friend who has read all the books so he could make vague references to things that meant nothing to me while other things were happening and then focused when they were onscreen. this was a very enjoyable way of watching for me, but it may not be for you! i understand that completely. during episodes 4 and 5 i have become more interested in the rest of the plot, however, so:

plot?

please nobody fact-check me on this because i remain very ignorant of the wheel of time's world-building, but: a long time ago there was someone called the dragon and they did some big things. was the dragon a literal dragon? perhaps! it's probably been addressed but i haven't seen fit to retain the information. the dragon like. did some things. with the world's magic. now only women can wield it. when men channel magic it will drive them mad (yes this is a pretty gender essentialist set-up). the dragon has now been reborn and is likely 20 years old. that's all anyone knows.

moiraine (rosamund pike) is an aes sedai (female channeler/magic wielder) and she is searching for the dragon reborn. she is accompanied by her warder, lan (daniel henney), a dude who is there to have her back basically. warders and aes sedai share a mind link and since moiraine and lan have been on this search for 20 years, they are very closely bonded. it's a deep, intimate, entirely platonic bond and tbh it rules. they get to a village, locate 4 likely suspects for the dragon, but cannot narrow it down.

chaos ensues: rocks fall, most everyone dies, and then it's 2 grown-ups with 4 children. this is where i clocked out. 1 kid having a coming-of-age heroes journey is one thing but 4 is too many. i'm sorry. once larger, external plot things started happening to them, i found the children interesting once again. i hope this continues, but if not there is no limit to the number of crossword puzzles i can do.

here's what's in wheel of time for me:

high fantasy tv in the post-game of thrones era. i didn't watch all of got, but i watched enough. 5 episodes in, there have been so many decisions made by the show which have set it up in opposition to got. everyone is very clothed (although you do see daniel henney's butt in the first episode. this is not a complaint), and there hasn't been any excessive lingering over pain, pain experienced by women in particular. there's a scene in the last ep (5) in which a young woman is bathed against her will by a group of men and it is filmed in such a way that you feel it as a violation, but it doesn't expose the actress and nobody is salivating. that's plainly not what it's about.

this story is so interested in women's lives and communities, and in such a way that feels genuine rather than performative (see: the witcher). 3/5 episodes thus far have been directed by women, and 2/5 have been written by them. there's also been an encouraging amount of queerness onscreen, both in the background and the foreground. it's not a show that is free from sin (there's some troubling colorism in the casting and i don't LOVE the fact that the community group clearly based on Irish Travellers and led by a white woman all wear their hair in locs), but it seems earnest in a way that is unusual for a show of this kind and with this budget and i enjoy that very much about it.

but nynaeve and lan are the linchpins. nynaeve is the best character by far, and zoe robbins is playing her with such nuance. i love it. and the nynaeve/lan relationship so far is. whew. i feel insane.

if that seems worth your time, then i recommend it! i do understand if the promise of insanity is not terribly attractive however.

AOT is def my kinda anime... horror, thriller sort of deal yk! Trust me aot gets real interesting in the final season so be prepared 👀 You already met Levi? That means you have gone pretty far! Yes! he's the captain 😌 humanity's strongest soldier! But not just his skills and looks he also has a really interesting and complex personality! It's what makes him a great character and that's why he hold half my heart ❤✨

That scene shocked me too! I was like - WTF THE MAIN CHARACTER JUST DIED??! 😱 that's just one twist of the many that is yet to come 😵💫 Once you're done with the 1st season tell me I got something to show you 😂

I don't think he will ever simp for a character... him teasing me doesn't really bother me, it's actually one of his less annoying traits 😅 Him not liking Oikawa is coz I like Oikawa, that's how he is- it's just to annoy me but I'm to old for his traps 😒
