FFXIV Sale Makes Now a Great Time to Discover Everyone’s Favourite MMO
Tumblr media
It's a fantastic moment to learn why FFXIV is generally cited as one of the top MMORPGs of all time because Square Enix has just started a significant FFXIV sale. This is a fantastic opportunity to start for the first time, upgrade if you've loved the free trial, or hop back in and see Endwalker if you've taken a break thanks to the substantial discounts on both the main game and its expansions. But wait, I hear you exclaim, doesn’t the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV have a free trial that includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion with no restrictions on playtime? Yes, as you might have heard if you’ve spent much time online, it does indeed – but there’s so much more to FFXIV than just those first two story arcs, and what better time to jump in than now? Alternatively, perhaps you’re already a free trial player and you’re looking to buy into the full thing. After all, while there are no playtime restrictions and you can level all the way up to 60, you are fairly limited in certain ways while playing on a free account. No joining a free company (FFXIV’s guild system), no directly messaging other players, no retainers for item storage, no access to the player markets to buy and sell gear – there’s certainly plenty of benefits to making the upgrade. The FFXIV Endwalker expansion is 50% off, as is its digital collector’s edition. Both of these also include the two prior expansions, Stormblood and Shadowbringers, the latter of which features some of the best story content in any RPG game period, although you’ll need a copy of the starter edition of the game to play them. If you haven’t ever bought FFXIV, then don’t worry – the Starter Edition, Complete Edition, and Complete Collector’s Edition are all 50% off as well. The FFXIV Complete Edition is the one to go for if you don’t already own the base game, and it’ll get you everything there is in the current edition of the game along with 30 days of playtime. Of course, it’s important to note that once you buy in, you will need an active subscription to play – so if you’re not 100% sold, then stick with the free trial for now. FFXIV spring sale discounts The FFXIV sale is live from March 1-15 on the Square Enix store, along with on the PlayStation store for console players. You can play on the same account across both platforms, but you’ll need to own a copy of the game and expansions on PC and on console, so perhaps if you’ve ever considered making the switch now is a good time to do so. Here are all the prices for the discounted editions in the sale: - FFXIV Starter Edition – £14.99 GBP / $19.99 USD - FFXIV Complete Edition – £17.49 GBP / $29.99 USD - FFXIV Complete Collector’s Edition – £42.49 GBP / $69.99 USD - FFXIV: Endwalker – £14.99 GBP / $19.99 USD - FFXIV: Endwalker Collector’s Edition – £22.49 GBP / $29.99 USD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTTtd6bnhFs You can find these discounts on the Square Enix store (UK and EU link/US link). Unfortunately, it looks like this sale doesn’t currently extend to the Steam version, so if you want to switch over you’ll need to buy the full thing, as expansions from the standalone launcher don’t cross over with the Steam edition of the game. The FFXIV patch 6.35 release date is right around the corner, so there’s plenty more on the way if you’re an active player. If you’re just stepping into Endwalker, don’t miss our FFXIV Island Sanctuary guide, along with our tips on how to play the FFXIV Reaper and the FFXIV Sage – the two jobs introduced in the expansion. I beat Endwalker
What can I say... What can I possibly say...
Final Fantasy XIV is a game that's impossible to recommend to most people, being both a prohibitively meaty JRPG as well as a MMO with a subscription fee.
Nevertheless, I am going to do it: Please play Final Fantasy XIV with a free trial up to level 60 including the critically acclaimed Heavensward expansion.
It's not going to be for everyone. But for the people that it's for... The story in this game is nothing short of phenomenal. Breathtaking, even.
It's earned its place among some of my favorite game stories ever. Perhaps not the greatest; but Shadowbringers and Endwalker solidify it into something truly worth remembering.
The heights this game soars to would amaze you to no end if all you've experienced is the base game (A Realm Reborn). The ending of ARR is honestly more like the beginning of your journey. And when it comes to its end, you'll look back on those early days and laugh.
Onto Endwalker itself; this expansion had big shoes to fill... concluding the story ten years in the making. How do you even do that? Not only did they figure out how, they made sure to stick the fucking landing.
And shining high above all else, gracing us with its immaculate splendor, is the soundtrack. The soundtrack. Soken deserves to be memorialized for ages for his work on ffxiv's soundtrack. The music in this game is almost without parallel- and it's used time and again for great effect throughout the story, especially in Endwalker. The amount of deeply emotional tracks in Endwalker... All reinforced by sampling common motifs from one another... It reminds me of the level of care and thought that went into Undertale's stellar soundtrack. Yeah I'm going there, it's just that good.
... All of this talk and it doesn't feel entirely genuine... I mean it all, of course- but what I really want to say is just how deeply this story affected me. How I'll always take these memories with me, particularly those made with my friends along the way. and how I'm now a proud mother to one very tiny lizard lady OC.
In a sentence: My journey has been good. It has been worthwhile.

Would you play the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV which has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime?
I bought Final Fantasy XIV back before it had a free trial. I think it was a narrow window after A Realm Reborn but maybe right before the launch of Heavensward? Or maybe it was right after Heavensward. I know it was before Stormblood. I bought it because friends were raving about it and it was like, $15, so I figured, why not. Then Stormblood hit and some of my FFXIV friends complained about that expac being kind of bad.
I bought it through Square's own webstore and I never redeemed it. It never seemed like I had time.
That and I'm just, like... wary of MMOs. I kind of always have been. I remember late in the life of Everquest, right before or right around the launch of World of Warcraft, and just... hearing about those early MMOs, like Asheron's Call or whatever, and feeling like they were huge, ridiculous wastes of time. Like I think this was before they were called raids, but there was a huge boss in Everquest. Some kind of giant blob or a sentient cloud or something. And I remembered reading it took multiple days to kill.
I talked to a friend about it who played Everquest, and he talked about how it was just a bunch of people standing around this gigantic rainbow colored transparent model, cycling through the same three hotkeys for hours. I think there may have even been video of it, on like G4 or whatever. And it was these people just looping the same animation, over, and over, and over, and over. Not moving, not really strategizing, just doing a cast animation. For hours. In one place.
(Trying to find out what monster it is now, I cannot find any evidence of this in Everquest. I don't know what monster or what game it was, I guess)
Point is, I saw that, and that alone scared me away from the whole genre for years. It painted a picture that MMOs were slow treadmills you ran on to keep you hooked until the next month's sub rolled over. Just barely enough gameplay to distract you for the next $15 to come out of your account.
Now, I know things are different now. World of Warcraft changed the landscape pretty significantly and made big advancements in making these less hardcore and more friendly. And, sometime in 2004 or so, friends did end up dragging me in to a beta test for City of Heroes. I had lots of fun bounding around rooftops as my two characters "Mr. Hedgehog" (a horrifying abomination that was as close to Sonic as I could make) and "Herbal T" (basically, Mr. T but with a fire sword).
So I know. I know! MMOs aren't like that anymore. I always had it in the back of my mind that some day I should try WoW before it shuts down, and I spent real human money to buy a key for vanilla FF14. So I'm willing to give it a shot some day. Eventually. Maybe.
It's just a matter of... when. It's not something you just start lightly. It's a huge download and a lot of setup.
