A Genshin Impact fanfiction.

How long had it been, already? Perhaps a thousand of years? He had lost count of the time.

It had been so long since the cryo archon, the Tsaritsa, ruler of Snezhnaya had launched her attack against the Heavenly Principles. Against Celestia.

So many years had passed... since he died. Since she also died.

The earlier was a one-sided love.

The latter was a good friend as well as a hero loved by all.

Those were the thoughts circling in his mind as he made his way to her tomb. To pay her a visit.

Looking back on those shared moments with them, he closed his eyes and remembered a fond memory.

There he was, sitting at a table, an exquisite cup of tea in his hand, his eyes lingering on the ocean as the people of Liyue made their way through the harbor, on their way back to work, or off to lunch, sometimes stealing mixed glances, all in his direction.

His eyes thus following the looks, the corners of his mouth curled up in an amused smile.

"Ugh- Childe! Quit it already! Give it back! This is not funny!" The traveler wanted her voice to sound firm, but the genuine fun she was having translated in her voice, betraying her.

What was assumingly supposed to be a glare from her was directed to a copper-haired young man, a pair of light blue haired feathers jokingly adorning his hair instead of hers, as it usually would. He was tauntingly holding a most elegant rapier, seemingly fontainian, way up above her head.

"Would you just look at that! Now that's a gorgeous weapon you've got here, comrade! Don't you think so, mister Zhongli?"

This name's bearer let out a laugh before giving his answer:

"Hah, yes, most refined indeed. Despite Fontaine being a nation mostly known for its mechanics, its people's skills when it comes to weapons craftmanship knows no need to envy Inazuma's reputation in this domain..."

Despite Paimon and the two youth giving him frequent looks, proving their want to listen to the cultured man and respect his speech, the fact that the harbinger was still toying around with the blonde woman, holding her rapier above his head, basically making her dance around him, also counted as an evidence that his question was partly rhetorical.

Seeing them get along like this made him smile. But the attention that he was giving her... was hurting him. Deep down. He just wasn't aware of it yet.

Two years later, Lumine finally sided with the Fatui, after learning everything she needed to know about this world. According to her, it needed to be built anew. When Childe broke the news to him, claiming that they had yet another powerful card up their sleeve, his eyes were shining in a newfound light. One full of ambition. Full of determination. Full of pride. Full of hope.

Full of love.

That's when the Lord of Geo bitterly realized that his friends would probably die, that he would likely be obligated to face them in battle despite his now weakened might, that the retired archon realized his feelings for him. At long last, despite the wisdom that he had learnt to cultivate thanks to an old, already long departed friend of his.

Now in the present time, he opened back his eyes in a deep sigh, knowing that he was now at the place where the Traveler, Honorary Knight of Mondstadt, Savior of Liyue, Captain of Swordfish II, First Sage of Buer, Leader of the Revolution, Flame of the War, and Twelfth Fatui Harbinger rested.

Nonetheless, a peculiar sight presented itself to him.

Peculiar and eerie.

There she was, the beloved hero, curled up on her knees, putting a bouquet of windwheel asters on her own tomb.

After what felt like an eternity to him, he finally dared to speak:

"Lumine?"

Lumine suddenly turned her head in a surprised way.

His feet brought him closer to her, allowing him to look more carefully at her face.

Her eyes.

Her eyes were different.

Not a shade of gold.

Green.

Anemo green.

Just like the color of her front locks, tied in two braids.

He immediately understood who was sitting in front of him.

A sad smile appeared on 'her' face, causing Zhongli to lightly scoff in the same way.

"Hey there, blockhead... you know, short ginger hair is a curious look on you." Barbatos finally spoke.

Okay not the biggest fan of romantic zhongven but this is making me think about the deepest darkest parts of the archon war and how cool it would be to see Barbatos basically do a superhero landing ON Morax's shoulders like I love thinking about Venti with giant angelic wings of freedom and steady immovable pillar Zhongli and how they're best friends aahshdgshdhagrjfgauftahfiafdjdysyfudud they're so great

Ehe... under the read more for space

How I feel about this character Venti makes me unwell, he also makes me want to live so it all works out. He was my first love in Genshin and also my strongest. He is my forever favorite, even if I accept other characters may do more, be more, he is my one and only clown husband. I cried when I had to leave Mondstadt without him (and rejoiced that we'd never be apart once I rolled for him three months later). He inspired me to leave my shitty job. Character of all time to me.

All the people I ship romantically with this character I am the KaeVen CEO for a reason....... this is the only ship for the character that matters to me because I see so much intrigue. There's the mortal/immortal aspects of it but also because they are very similar characters IMO. They're both "outsiders" in their own home. People don't trust them because they're hiding behind their smile. Neither like taking credit for their good deeds or that their reputation precedes them, etc. I like the drama of "how could they ever forgive me for what I've done?" "am I worthy of being loved/ allowing myself to fall in love?" "I didn't think you of all people would understand me". And they've had more substantial moments in canon together than frankly any other Venti ship, but who's counting?

When I don't have brain worms I actually like exes zhongven a lot, I think they had a longstanding relationship that doesn't work out for various reasons, and they probably know each other quite well, or at least they used to. I also like RosaVen in a genderweird way, Rosaria realizing she thinks he's annoyingly cute and doesn't know what to do about it is fun. I also like one-sided Venlumi and Venti/Vanessa, because I know he longs for powerful women who don't reciprocate in that way... sigh.

My non-romantic OTP for this character One no one will mention- Miko + Venti friendship is S tier, I love that he gossips with her over drinks. I also prefer platonic XiaoVen, they're close but not in that way to me. As mentioned I also like Venlumi, and I'll take platonic KaeVen too since I eat crumbs. Historically I care about his relationships with Vanessa and NB but I am fixated on Venti in the current timeline so I don't think about them much.

My unpopular opinion (s) about this character Hoo boy. Well for one I actually don't like his archon design very much. I kind of dislike some of the elements that I think don't make sense on his body and also were only shown in the comic depiction, like his glowing anemo tattoos or w/e, I don't really get the point of those so I omit them in my writing. His archon design and all the discussion around it bleeds into my dislike of people who label him a tr*p or something similar/worse. Despite this, very pro Venti as a sex-haver, I don't think there's anything wrong with sexualizing him, I just have my own icks. Also pro Venti having weird gender, even if I still prefer he/him pronouns for him.

I guess I dislike that people distrust him so much. It's like, sure, he's withholding info from us, but to assume that means he has ulterior, evil motives makes 0 sense to me. I also don't like corrupted Venti for the same reason. He's fine. He just has the usual kinds of despair, from the existential crisis of his existence, perception of time, and all the loss he's faced that drive him to sleep for hundreds of years at a time. Far more tangible reasons to be "corrupted" to me than "ooooh the abyss made him Evilllll" Besides, Celestia made all that is forbidden evil, even if he is full of abyssal knowledge/power that's not a good metric of someone's morality when Celestia is our main antagonist!

I guess thinking Kaeya is his best ship is unpopular, but that's redundant ATP.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Carmen Dei: Chapter II. Or really any new story/event appearance where he's allowed to be more than a glorified emcee / convenient plot starter.

I think havikaveh is The One True Pairing Objectively & I’m not even like super focused on them I just look at them and I’m like yeah they are gay. What am I supposed to do. Not think it’s good?!?! I honestly think if I didn’t attach to Nahida so much & at the same time of Kaveh’s release there could’ve been an alternate timeline where I hyperfixated on Havikaveh instead of hat radish

IM NOT SURE it’s a bit harder since I don’t have rlly strong shipping opinions. I guess the first that comes to mind is zhongxiaoven but it’s less of just an ot3 and more of a complicated love triangle that goes in a circle as a form of hilarious character study

Zhongven are divorced but date for fun. They sometimes drag Xiao into it who sits between them shaking like a chihuahua. Xiao wants Zhongli to use him as a weapon to the point it’s a very unbalanced sort of devoted infatuation & Zhongli enjoys his presence but is trying to be responsible about the power dynamic. Xiao is also infatuated with Venti and tries offering Venti use him as a weapon but Venti (god of freedom) is like ummmm. Please don’t…? And is trying to have a stable relationship but also Xiao needs a lot of stability and Venti has commitment issues so it’s sort of just Complicated in a fun way. Etc

Often, Venti finds himself sitting on the highest branch of the tree at Windrise, muttering stories about his children to no one in particular.

He speaks about the Knights and the one who leads them. Compassionate, driven, a mirror of an old friend. He manages to insert a line about the little girl who blew up part of Mondstadt with her bombs.

He speaks about the winery far south-west of the city, almost bordering Liyue. He complains about the borderline blasphemous way its owner treats their very own archon. Surely, he's warranted a lifetime supply of wine, right? He was the who taught his children how to make them after all. Business wouldn't be booming without him.

He speaks about the church his children built for him and how he finds a certain idol—Venti has to stop himself and explain what that is halfway through his sentence—amusing. She'll talk about their Great Lord Barbatos as he companies her to pick up herbs in the forest and Venti will soak in every word that comes from her.

To anyone else, it would seem as if he's only recounting little tales about the people who hail from his land as his hands mindlessly strum a tune on his lyre.

But the wind has known him for so long after all, and it catches quickly on what he wants them to do.

The wind takes note of his little tells, notices the delighted lilt in his voice and the way his hands strum a gleeful song on his lyre (its one that sits familiar on their ears, painting a vague image of two gods ridding themselves of the weight of the world under the stars a millenia ago).

The wind picks up its pace, traveling through planes across Mondstadt and the frozen heights of Dragonspine and the mountains that stand tall and proud across Liyue until it reaches the outskirts of the harbor where a certain man is taking his nightly stroll.

He's walking at a leisurely pace, mind wandering far off and eyes trained on the vast night sky. The stars twinkle at his every step and he starts to wonder if it senses how delighted his stomach is from his filling meal at the Wanmin Restaurant when a gust of wind lightly slaps him in the face.

Zhongli possesses not the power of the wind, so the message its trying to convey falls unrecognizable on his ears, but he's familiar with the archon who controls it enough to understand what they mean based on how they act.

There's a grin tugging at his lips as he saunters towards the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. The wind continues to blow excitedly around, his coat flapping to its rhythm.

Perhaps he's ought to visit an old friend, it’s been such a long time after all.

Smthn I feel a lot of shippers don't get about genshin impact is that they CAN'T make any ships canon.

Now I don't know anything about the chinese government and what kind of queer themes the will/won't allow in media from their country, but I do know that genshin's vast well of dynamic characters with plenty of interactions between them makes for a lot of fun platonic, familial and romantic dynamics, and hoyoverse KNOWS this.

There are queer ships that could be seen as canon (Beigguang or Xingyun) but they can't outright state it. A good amount of genshin's fan base is comprised of people heavily involved in shipping culture, but a lot of fans also hate the shipping or just don't like queer ships (not getting into that). So to satiate everyone, they cannot outright state that any playable characters are romantically involved, regardless of if it's queer or not.

"These characters are romantically involved because of this interaction!" "No they're not, that character is in love with this one!" "Uhh actually none of these characters are dating, stop ruining the fandom"

Me? I don't particularly care what's canon or not, I'll ship any characters I think have the most romantic potential, regardless of if they've even interacted in-game.

What I'm trying to say is: whether you like Eulamber of Jeanluc or Zhongven, your ship will never and CAN never be canon. Also I think electro women are gay.

Something about Remuria for songs/secrets- I might draw that one, have Venti alone, but it's about Remus and Venti's reaction to him regardless

Something furiven for flowers/summer breeze?? Probably platonic/ambiguous

Something zhongven (again probably ambiguous) for drinks/travel, maybe involving tea tasting? Tea is to China what wine is to Europe, I could use that

Father's day fic for new friends/celebration where Venti and Diluc talk about their concepts of family and how they fill gaps left by loss? Exploring how it can go much further than blood relatives, especially in Mondstadt?

It's really fitting for him, honestly, because he's a walking swirl reaction. His story is- for the most part- a vast anthology of him finding others that want to write for themselves and gently folding their fingers around a pen.

But isn't this the best way to understand anyone? Can you truly know someone without seeing them bounce off other people? What is personality if not the unique combination of ways we react to external stimuli? Even if one was placed in a senseless void, separate from external challenges and body functions, their internal monologue would be shaped by, and reactive to, memories of their past involving other things and people. If someone only ever existed in that void, who would they be? What would they have to think about? How could we get to know them?

That aside, let me know if any of the above are particularly interesting. I could prioritise them.

When Morax unleashes his plan to test the Liyue Qixing and his adepti, he does not take into account the stirring of the Abyss Order in the north and the corruption of Dvalin - for why would he fear an organization that works in such shadows? He is secure in his power, after all, unlike his flighty ex, the absentee archon of Mondstadt who rises only when his people are in danger.

But, somehow, the Abyss Order discovers his plan. Somehow, they capitalize on it. And he, the God of Stone who cannot sicken, is struck down - taken by an order bent on destroying all of humanity as Liyue crumbles around him. For even Archons aren't immune to Durin's blood, and Morax is no exception. But then the question becomes - if even Archons may fall to the agony of this corrupting burn - how is their traveling friend Aether immune?

The answer comes from beyond the stars - an ancient malice that knows no kindness or mercy. A malice whose legacy the Abyss Order now bears, seeking to topple all the Archons and their people into the void of utter destruction. And they have begun in Liyue.

Fortunately, it takes a long time to erode stone.
