What about Ice who has actual ice powers. And who has the reputation of "ice cold, no mistakes" partially because if he's anything but cool, calm and collected, he loses control of himself.
Slider is the only person besides his family who knows, has known ever since the Academy days when Ice didn't handle a call from his father well and froze the phone to the hook.
And thank fucking god for him, because now he can cover for Ice when he turns away from a fight with Maverick and grabs the door of his locker without thinking, angry until frost spreads from his fingers onto the metal.
In a matter of seconds, Slider is stepping up to his side to hide it with his body, starting up a conversation that gives them both an excuse to stay in place until everyone leaves.
He never forgets his gloves in the cockpit, where he gets heated often, no matter how hard he tries. But it's never as bad as after he watches Maverick and Goose plummet to the sea. Slider has to carefully and quickly help pry his hands off the stick, and it takes him hours of pacing around and shaking and holding whatever warm mug Slider hands him to calm down enough, and for the ice to melt enough, that he can take his gloves off.
He feels so high strung that he doesn't dare touch anyone until after Layton, when he returns Maverick's grin and all he can really feel is excitement and relief and holy shit, we're alive, and he doesn't think when he pulls Maverick into a hug.
Neither of them freezes.
And it's only after that that he gathers the courage to visit Goose in the hospital. He tries so hard to keep it together, to not break down, but he grabs the armrest, needing something to hold onto, and doesn't even notice the snow that covers it until Goose's hand wraps around his wrist.
"Hey," he whispers. "I'm okay. C'mere."
And Ice doesn't dare touch him, but he does lean down when Goose hugs him.

All of them, all the Flyboys, continue to pay for Ice's personal phone number to be active months after months. They make sure to buy a plan good enough that they won't have to delete Mav's voice mails too often, and they never, ever, listen to them.
(Everybody leaves their messages too, long and short, and sometimes they call just to hear Ice's voice again and again.)
Years later, when Mav is still dealing the same number, Tom's voice is still there, his laugh as soft as the day he tried to record a somewhere serious message to let the world know he wasn't reachable.
"*bip* You tried to reach Tom Kazansky and hadn't much luck - Mav please! *laughing in the background* okay okay gimme 5 seconds Baby Goose- anyway try again maybe I will answer. *sound of a kiss too close to the reciver *Mitch-*bip*"

Idea
After the mission, Jake apologizes to Mav and Bradley about bringing up the Goose incident, and explains that he was just trying to get Bradley to fly faster and better in a fucked up way. They both forgive him, and Bradley thinks maybe now they can both be good wingmen to each other.
However, that's not the case. Although Jake still hangs around the Dagger Squad and gets closer to them, he's hesitant around Bradley. Not enough for most people to notice, he's still a sarcastic asshole, but he's wary around Bradley and Bradley doesn't know why.
Jake is actually still hurt about the time at the Hard Deck when Bradley told him, "Hangman, the only place you'll lead anyone is an empty grave." Bradshaw brought up one of his greatest losses when he was just joking around. It hurt. He knew that the proper thing to do is talk about it, but instead he just keeps Bradshaw at a distance and watches him to make sure that the other man won't randomly lose his temper. He's only accepted in the Dagger Squad because he saved Rooster and Mav's lives, he won't fuck that up by accusing Rooster of being an ass about something that happened months ago. Rooster probably didn't even remember.
He was right, Rooster didn’t remember. Just that they were making jabs at each other.
Rooster is talking to Mav and Ice about Hangman being distant and Mav just tells him to give Hangman time to get used to having a team.
Ice starts hanging around the Top Gun base more, and eventually starts building rapport with the Dagger Squad. Especially Lieutenant Jake "Hangman" Seresin who seems to really look up at him. However, unlike others who do, Seresin can actually hold a conversation and doesn't just hang on his every word and treat him like some kind of god. Ice likes the kid.
(Ice thinks the Dagger Squad knows about his marriage with Mav and how he raised Bradley. Dagger Squad does not know.)
Eventually, Ice asks about his relationship with Rooster and Jake spills the whole thing about what Bradley said, and the lost of his former wingman. Ice is livid. He confronts Rooster about it, and tells Bradley to apologize and to better watch his temper.
When Bradley does, Jake asks how he knows about that stuff. Bradley said Ice did and how his uncle is always trying to make sure wingmen stick together.
Instead of being comforted about this, Jake feels betrayed. Betrayed that sometimes he told Ice in confidence was just out and about now and becomes upset about it and walks away. He feels stupid for not realizing that IceMav was a thing and that Bradley was their pseudo-son, and thinks that Ice just wanted to get close to him, so that Dagger Squad would stay together.
Jake starts distancing himself from Ice and starts withdrawing from the team.
Everything eventually gets straightened out with some intervention from Mav, Javy, and the rest of the Dagger Squad. Mav by telling Jake that Ice just likes to fix things, and accidentally oversteps. Javy by threatening Bradley to never ever say shit like that to Jake again. Ice then apologizes to Jake and tells him he just found Bradley's behavior unacceptable and didn't mean to overstep. Jake accepts the apology and they both start bonding again.
Bradley and Jake start becoming true wingmen not only in the air, but also on the ground.
Happy ending, Dagger Squad + IceMav all vibing together.

chapter 2 word count: ~4k
main themes: iceman angst, icemav, major platonic slice, hurt/comfort, big fluff, flyboys being flyboys, military-accurate (hopefully), aircraft carrier, everyone needs a hug (especially iceman), takes place a couple months after top gun, things will get worse before it gets better, emotional pain, maverick & iceman are oblivious af until they aren’t
pain: imminent
summary:
"In light of the current political climate and recent events, we put in a request for an additional crew to be sent to fill the gap in personnel and help us finish out our cruise. With previous experience in our squadron and one hell of a reputation, I would like everyone to welcome back from TOPGUN Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Sam “Merlin” Wells. Boys, thank you for coming on such short notice.” Maverick slowly turned his head to look over his shoulder at Marco. Marco immediately looked away and Maverick bathed in how glorious it felt to be on the other side of the situation

Yo! I would love to write some of these prompts if you guys would like to request them! I'm only writing for Top Gun right now but I think these prompts would be a great way to explore Ice and Maverick (and some other Top Gun characters if you so choose)!
Ficlet Starter Lines
Send me a number and a character or ship and I'll write you a ficlet!
"You know that's not what I meant."
"Nice try."
"The world doesn't care."
"I'm here, aren't I?"
"What the hell did I just walk into?"
"That makes absolutely no sense."
"Are you trying to tell me something?"
"That's just not fair."
"Who said anything about fair?"
"Wow. That's low, even for you."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"What? I have never-"
"How could you do this to me?"
"Is that really what you think?"
"I do not have an answer for you."
"What kind of question is that???"
"Ok, well... Fuck."
"Settle down, there, drama queen."
"In my defense, I really wanted to."
"At least I didn't break any laws."
"What did you do this time?"
"Boom! That's a victory in my book!"
"It looks the same on paper."
"Oh no, what have I started..."
"And yet, that is not the weirdest thing that's happened to me today."
"Please. I need you to believe me."
"How do we get out?"
"I don't hate you."
"Don't call me that."
Freebie! Send me your own dialogue starter!

i actually really enjoy writing m/f friendships that toe the line especially if their were exes or others believe they hooked up. and i especially like writing m/m relationship that you need to squint at to truly pick up on the fact that they're a couple lest you get confused with their m/f friendships

There's only a pair of wings on Admiral Kazansky's coffin, even when he asked to be none for some bullshitting reason Maverick fucking hates. At least as much as he hates Tom for dying while he wasn't around. As much as he hates himself for the way they said goodbye.
Mav takes a step, then a second one. He can feel Sarah, Slider and Bradley's eyes on him but he can't stop moving, not until he's in front of the coffin and he feels like screaming but, instead, he places his own wings on the wood and punch them in.
"I'm going to be on your wings until the end and even after, you asshole." Mav whispers, trying not to cry.

what do you see in icemav?
Shit- why's this low-key a hard question? Like, I see A LOT in icemav but it sort of depends on like what lens I'm viewing it in.
Like, in terms of in what ways do I see them as romantic- there's quite a few. Film-wise, story-wise: I feel like when you make two halfs of a whole you can go about that with different dynamics - romantic, platonic, familial, etc. The reason I think it's romantic though is because there's the other aspects of their beings also being polar opposites: their hair/eye color, their heights, their flying style, their childhoods... there's a lot that makes it more romantic to find these differences in them and still understand that they care and respect one another. I mean, if they didn't, they wouldn't view the other as the only reasonable competition within Top Gun. Also, they begin the film as acquaintance-rivals only to end it as trusting the other with something they have never fully trusted anyone else with- their lives (and the lives of their RIOs). They've seen past their differences to understand that their values either align or are worth more to one another than before- hence: romantic (albeit that is not always the case). Furthermore, the way the film is shot is with a homoerotic tone. The volleyball scene, the bar scene, the shower room scene. All of these either have almost no skin covered, longing looks, flirtatious banter, or/and an isolating moment between Iceman and Maverick. Not to even mention the ridiculous amount of staring that goes on between the two of them throughout the duration of the movie. Also, much of the movie, during that time, was meant to mock the homoerotic nature of Navy camaraderie, which means it isn't far fetched to notice Maverick's sexual tension with more than one character who isn't Charlie. Iceman is just the most obvious, and I feel their poetic contrast makes them a better fit as a couple, which is why I ship them. Another note is Iceman apologizing to Mav in the locker room. It's an intimate scene that they share with only each other and, well, Hollywood (I believe) is around the corner. While his hiding is to ultimately call Charlie, the moment resembles two pilots being eavesdropped on by another- a snitch as told by the scene. This can easily signify the intimacy and depth of Ice and Mav's relationship as it is something to be kept secret- if someone hears, they may snitch on the two of them. While this may be a reach of sorts, I can't help but think the scene reflects a sort of invasion of privacy for an intimate, meaningful moment shared by two Navy men (in a locker room may I add) that the eavesdropper feels the need to report/share to a higher up.
In the terms of how I view their relationship; i.e. what I see within the ship itself- I see a lot of layers to Icemav, which is one of the main reasons I ship them (I ship Mystrade too so it doesn't always have to be for great reasons). Their poetic nature is one of the main reasons: Maverick being an orphan, working his way into the Navy, reckless in the air, fiery demeanor, and a sun-coded character whereas Iceman being the son of an admiral/commander, has nepotism and the expectation of the Navy, rule-follower in the air, cool/calm demeanor, and is a moon-coded character. They compliment each other in the best ways and work well with one another in their air because their skills align with each others perfectly. BUT, ship-wise I think their dynamic is super great because there's a lot to work with. As an angst fan, Ice's expectations oftentimes make him hide a part of himself- one that Mav is likely more chill with because of his reckless nature. This leads to them having to choose one another or their careers- or figure out how to live with both in the time in which they exist- or, the most tragic, having to end things because they both can't have what they want. Hypothetically, Ice won't choose Mav because Mav needs the Navy, and Mav can't choose between Ice and the Navy because that means leaving his best friend behind in a way. Ice doesn't want him to choose- he loves Mav too much to force him to so he'd probably choose for Mav- he'd leave. Other than the angsty will they-won't they aspects of their relationship, they have many other good dynamics. In TGM, it is shown that they both are close with Bradley ("the kid," Mav/Bradley fighting when Ice's death is announced referencing close attachments on both sides, Ice knowing Mav is the only one who can teach Bradley, Icemav's conversation about Bradley in Ice's office) which is great on a relationship level. Bradley is seen as the kid Icemav "never" had. They have a severed relationship but Icemav has a united front against Bradley (parent-vibes just saying). This adopted-kid trope is honestly one of my favs and adds so much relatability and domesticity to the Icemav ship- and it's totally feasible which is crazy. Carole died before Bradley could apply for the Navy, which means Bradley (who'd have signed up at 17-18 bc that's always been his dream) would need a parental guardian to care for him while he's a minor. Guess who Bradley's godfather is??? Maverick. So I would say that Mav raised Bradley during his later teen years and Ice referencing Bradley as "the kid" leads me to believe he played a part in Bradley's childhood alongside Mav. ALSO, Icemav's angst traumatizing Bradley would be another great reason for him to have some resentment against his pseudo-fathers. Overall, I do think Icemav is a great ship for the several layers it does have based on canon dynamic, time period, occupation- these all give great material for this couple. A few tags that this ship can easily use are: forbidden romance, rivals-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, right person wrong time, 1980s, idiots in love, shares a kid, friends-to-lovers, enemies-with-benefits, bittersweet ending, unhappy ending, main character death (sorry that was mean).
ALL IN ALL: I see a lot in Icemav and I think that's why they've kind of taken over my mind the past year and a half. They're the first ship I've ever actually attempted a long-fic for and I think that's for a reason. Also, I truly think it sucks that we get to see so little of their lives with one another (actually real homophobic writers would probably ruin it so instead I wanna fill in the blanks myself) but it does also give us the freedom to create a lovely, tragic answer for the missing 30 years in the timeline- which is some great material.
TLDR; On a film/story basis, several directional and artistic choices from the actors implies homoerotic dynamics and they would not have added so many lingering looks if they weren't at least a little gay. From a ship basis, Icemav has a lot to work with like their rivals-to-lovers dynamic, relationship with Bradley, and tragically implied last-minute relationships with women in TGM.

Goose: So… I’ve seen you’ve been spending a lot of time with Ice recently.
Maverick: No, Goose, it's not what it looks like, I swear.
Goose: Oh really? So no reason for me to be jealous?
Maverick: No! You’re the only one for me.
Goose: Is that so?
Maverick: I promise! Ice and I are just dating, okay? He's my boyfriend.
Goose: So there are no best-friends-feelings involved?
Maverick: You are still my one and only best friend! He's just the love of my life, nothing more!
Goose: But I’m still the platonic love of your life, right?
Maverick: Of course bro!
Goose: Bro...

Update on this whole shitshow: I thought it would be a long-ish one shot if I ever actually got to it, but then I was attacked by ideas for like... three sequels, so we're gonna go the route of smaller shots and maybe I'll be able to get it all out before I go crazy from it
a practical example of me coming up with fic ideas:
step 1, as I'm falling asleep: "hey, what about doing something with ice transforming into an animal? everything I've read so far is mav, ice deserves some pets too!"
step 2, the moment I wake up: "yeah! and what if he was also crying and panicking and bleeding out on mav's couch!" "...you don't wanna do some light fluff instead?" "no. werewolf bites. fuck you."

ok i know that i am like an icemav disciple, a true icemav devotee (for context just wrote 5k of disgustingly sickly sweet smut), but ive been thinking about it and there’s something extremely appealing about platonic icemav too. Like canon besties icemav, figuring out that they actually have a lot in common, a slow developing friendship over decades, laughing at each others jokes, Mav & slider competing for best man at straight-ice’s wedding to not-his-sister-sarah, ice & mav getting drinks in DC & bullshitting about the navy and ice teasing him year in and year out “still single?” “You wound me, kazansky.” ice & mav & sarah drinking mimosas on the back deck. mav as part of the kazansky family anyway no matter what. this is an incredibly pleasing idea to me. & it’s basically canon so there’s no real point to this post but I’d just like 2 make my opinion on this public

chapter 1 word count: 4.9k
main themes: iceman angst, eventual icemav, major platonic slice, hurt/comfort, big fluff, flyboys being flyboys, military-accurate (hopefully), aircraft carrier, everyone needs a hug, takes place a couple months after top gun
pain: yes
summary:
“What changed?” Maverick threw up his arms in disbelief. “After I left something changed. Tell me, what did I do?” Iceman turned around so that they were face to face, mere inches apart. “You left.” One look at his face set Maverick on edge, the snarky jab he had carefully prepared immediately lost. His skin was too pale, littered with the purples and blues that matched his own from those short few months ago. His eyes, though sunken, were just as blue as the kind of skies pilots dreamed of, stretching endlessly in every direction without a cloud to be seen. But there was something heavy being carried in his eyes. It was unnerving. Something had happened while he was gone.
