in no particular order, here are some fics about hange zoë i’ve enjoyed reading. most of them are canonverse oneshots, ranging from 1k to 4k words in length, with an equal distribution of genfic and relationship-focused fic.

this list was compiled in Aug/Sep 2022, and I admittedly don’t keep up with snk fic often now, so anyone’s welcome to add self-recs or other recs in reblogs that you’ve enjoyed.

gen, pre-canon, missing scenes

Downriver by Lady_Bluebird (Levi & Hange | Gen | M rating | 1.2k) Hange patches Levi up in the woods after Zeke’s attack on him. M rated for graphic descriptions of violence and injury (it’s otherwise platonic, and centred on their professional relationship). a gritty, realistic look at their situation on the eve of the Rumbling.

knock down drag out by Senri (Levi & Hange | Gen | T rating | 1.6k) post-Wall Maria, Levi and Hange have a confrontation about Levi’s decision to give the serum to Armin. an excellent missing scene that builds on mere hints of Hange’s ambivalence about their involuntary promotion to Commander in canon to give them the airtime they deserve. we get to see exactly why and how being Commander’s a poisoned chalice for Hange, not to mention Hange’s resentment over the serum affair and Erwin’s death. Hange’s a principled person, but has their rough spots too; this fic showcases that well with nuance.

Zugzwang by Minos_forlorn (Pieck & Hange | Gen | G rating | 1.3k) Hange plays a game of chess with Pieck, while she’s captured and under their care in Paradis. a great look at these two connecting with each other outside of the circumstances within the manga, with good character insight into both of them.

Hanji's Notebook by lightningwaltz (Gen | T Rating | 4k) a pre-canon look at hange’s backstory, told through excerpts from their notebook/journal. it’s written in first person POV, but don’t let that faze you: this fic nails Hange’s idiosyncratic but reflective thought process, which is an impressive feat. the worldbuilding & deeper scythe into the lives of the Survey Corps’s members is wonderful too!

relationship-focused fics

Acceptable Cost by gogollescent (Erwin/Hange | Other | T rating | 1.5k) a short fic centred around a birthday celebration for Erwin, that offers a peek into Hange’s wonderful camaraderie with their comrades, and Hange’s life + outlook in the Survey Corps before the start of the manga. the characterisation is wonderfully sharp and insightful. although it’s tagged Erwin/Hange, imo this can pass as Gen until the last few sections.

alike by soapyheels (Hange/Pieck | Other | T rating | 2k) short and well-written bittersweet look at Pieck’s post-canon situation as she reflects on some Rumbling interactions with Hange, featuring a deeper conversation than what we got in canon. beyond Hange’s role, I really liked the notes about Pieck’s inner conflict, and how Pieck was able to build bridges with an enemy commander, and the hopeful note this ended on.

Lose the Ballads by Anonymous (Hange/Petra, Other | T rating | 1k) Petra can carry her own weight and whatever the Corps has to throw at her, including Hanji Zoë. a short fic charting Petra’s first meeting with Hange and a subsequent (implied) relationship. excellent Hange voice and characterisation, with sharp and resonant prose too; I’m in love with the version of Hange presented here, whirlwind-like but principled and with hidden depths.      

And debauchee of dew by tselinoyarsk (snowlikeash) (Hange/Petra, F/F | T rating | 1k) Hanji learns not to just drink any little thing on Petra's drafting desk, else she be preyed upon. a short but fun interaction between petra and hange, featuring fun dialogue.

platonic eruhan headcanons please???

Ok I have a few headcanons I wrote about them a while ago that I haven't posted yet but since you asked I'll share them here, along with others I especially made for this ask!

I seriously believe Erwin has arachnophobia. He gets Levi or Hange to get rid of spiders for him. Hange is fascinated by spiders, she knows the species and she picks up the ones she knows are harmless. She once tried to help Erwin overcome his fear, so she held a little spider close to his hand. "See, this one's harmless I know for sure, and look how cute it is, it's so small it can't possibly harm you". Erwin was actually doing well, he was almost smiling at the spider, until it moved onto his hand. Erwin literally jumped and tripped over his chair, crashing to the floor. Hange promised not to tell anyone and she always kept the secret.

Hange enjoys running up to Mike and Levi, yelling "flex your abs!" and punching them in the stomach. She once did this to Erwin while he was holding a stack of papers and he didn't have the time to react. She ended up punching him hard in the gut. Moblit's face was drained of its colour as he witnessed Erwin clutching his stomach and bending down while all his papers got scattered on the floor.

Related to the abs incident, Hange sat with him and helped him reorganize his paperwork to have him forgive her. She made him tea and shared biscuits with him.

I already said this, but angry Hange unsettles Erwin a lot. He doesn't like her being unpredictable.

Erwin asks for Hange's opinion a lot. Whenever they are in a meeting and he explains his ideas, he usually ends with "what do you reckon, Hange?". He enjoys her approval, and he loves when she disagrees because they can get into a healthy debate and he'll always end up feeling more open-minded than before.

Hange plays with Erwin's hair. She likes him to have messier hair so she arranges his hairstyle while he's too absorbed in paperwork to complain.

She sometimes gives him a neck and shoulder massage.

Erwin is subtly protective of Hange. Whenever he senses she's down, he's around. "Do you need titans for research?" he asks, and judges how sad she is based on her answer. If her eyes don't light up with excitement then he knowns it's bad and he asks if she wants to talk about it.

They play chess in Erwin's office in their free time. Erwin usually wins, but their matches are awesome.

She once got a lot of money from him by placing a bet while he was drunk. He didn't really remember what the bet was about but he knew Mike and Levi had witnessed it so he just gave her the money and avoided getting drunk around her again.

They talked about Marie. He didn't exactly open up a lot about it, but Hange knows more than anyone else.

Hange gave him a cactus and told him its name is Stingy, but Erwin renamed it Acantha. He takes care of it as if it was a pet. The man is seriously obsessed, he has a schedule for watering it and keeps track of its growth. He showed Hange the flowers it sprouted.

They exchange books. A lot. They end up forgetting which books are Erwin's and which ones are Hange's.

These guys can debate for hours. One will say some random stuff like "I think morals are overrated and are too subjective". And three hours later they'd be sitting in the same position, full into debate mode. They love it. Everyone else leaves after half an hour of it.

They are so brutally honest with each other and never get personally upset about something the other said. Like, in a meeting Hange would go "Erwin, your plan is completely disregarding safety measures for the recruits. It'll be disaster and it won't work. I'm surprised you came up with this, sounds like a terrible idea". And he'd just go deep into thinking and reply "Please, do tell me more". So they enter debate mode again. They love constructive criticism and they know how to do it right with each other.

It rarely happens, but when emotions get in the way and things get tensed, Erwin knows that when Hange slams her hands on the table it's getting bad. It's the moment he decides to retreat. He shuts off emotions and he just goes "we'll talk about it when we are both calm enough for this conversation to happen". Hange usually tries to chase him but she gives up. It takes them a few days to settle it.

Its funny how antis support absurd levi pairings like erenxlevi! sexy! arminxlevi? yes! levixmikasa? ackerman powerhouse slay! levixzeke?enemies to lovers yes! but when somebody mentions levixhanji suddenly they are like oh they are just platonic, sibling goals! ,or that dreaded levi hates hanji argument despite the literal canon proof that they are actually fond of each other.

Because crack ships with no content don't threaten their own ship. Levihan has some real canon evidence which makes them feel bad.

Same with Hange ships. Mobuhan, Pikuhan, Eruhan, even Hange x Petra (lmao) is acceptable and understandable, but not Levihan.

Idk if someone asked this already but What do you think of EruHan? I've recently stumbled upon an Eruhan Fic. titled "loss" and I'm in love with how well written the story is 😔✋

So sorry for answering this so late, anon, but yes I love Eruhan! It's such a soft ship, both romantically and platonically. Like, I accept that Eruhan has a sore lack of official content and chemistry BUT I don't care, I love it anyway and I am always looking for more Eruhan arts and fics to eat up and share with others!

Otp is absolutely Rivamika. No one even comes close. (Although I've def enjoyed some NSFW works of Eruri, Erejean, and the holy grail of gay SNK, Erurimike.)

I have a few brotps. The veteran trio is pretty great as well as the individual relationships therein (Eruri/Eruhan/Levihan), and I like the potential of EMA even though it was squandered in the end. I also loved Sasha and Connie's friendship, and Sasha and Mikasa's friendship even though we didn't get to see it as much.

Gonna rate these ships behind a read more so this post doesn't take up your entire dash.

Rivetra - Don't like it. I headcanon this as one-sided love on Petra's part. (I liked her and Oluo better.) I feel like Rivetra has pretty much disappeared from the SNK fandom landscape, I used to see it a lot more in the dark times between seasons 1 and 2.

Levihan - S-tier friendship, hate it as a romantic pairing. I've seen a lot of otherwise very good Levihan art that makes Hanji more feminine, which I don't like. Plus I feel like even if the two of them got wasted and fell into bed together, Levi would be incredibly turned off by Hanji's bad personal hygiene and nothing would happen.

Eruri - I don't think they ever got sexual in canon, but I do think they genuinely loved and respected each other. Eren and Mikasa take note: THIS is how you do an Ackerbond.

Ereri - Meh. Not a fan.

Rivahisu - Hate it. It feels weirdly gross to me, for some reason? Even though, fun fact, one of my first fic ideas was Hisu domming the shit out of Levi after he roughed her up and yelled at her about becoming queen. Idk, they're both so small. Their babies would be like hamsters.

Rivannie - I can't even imagine this lmao. What a weird pairing.

Rivasasha - Another one that doesn't make sense to me.

Eremika - The worst and most toxic pairing in the series. I hate everything about their dynamic. Eren is cruel to Mikasa and she just accepts his treatment without wavering in her obsessive love. She infantilizes him even though he clearly hates it, although she's right that he usually needs someone to clean up his messes. I hate that Eren claims he loves her even though he had, like, 2 moments in the entire series where he wasn't openly contemptuous of her. I don't see them as a tragic couple, unless the tragedy is that they had great potential as characters but Yams decided to hamper all the development they could have had as individuals in favor of smashing them together at the last minute with no buildup. I don't even think Eren likes Mikasa as a person very much. I'm not against childhood friends to lovers as a trope, but I think Yams did a really bad job of depicting any kind of mutually positive relationship between them.

Arumika - Cute! I have a headcanon that they've fooled around as sort of an exploratory thing out of mutual platonic love rather than being sexually attracted to each other. They have a great friendship and although I don't think they have endgame romantic potential, I could see them trying out dating but deciding that they're better off as friends.

Jeankasa - I go back and forth on this one. It's not bad, but it's no Rivamika. I did ship it initially but then Levi showed up and my interest in JK went out the window entirely. I think Jean would be a good husband to Mikasa, but after the ending of the series I question her love for him. I think she'd agree to marriage more out of the idea that they have a mutual goal of love and family and the knowledge that he'll take good care of her, and then over time maybe she would fall in love with him. I feel bad for Jeanbo because he's Mikasa's second choice both in canon and in my headcanon!

Mikahisu - I haven't really considered them as a pair before; I got the vibe that Mikasa kinda hated Historia for capturing Eren's attention before she was shoved off the page to get pregnant and... whatever she ended up doing. Fascism, I guess. I could see them getting off to a rough start but Hisu wins Mikasa over with her charm and determination.

Mikahan - Another one I haven't really considered. I think Hanji's overzealousness would turn Mikasa off, although they could have a friendship like a less playfully antagonistic Levihan.

Mikannie - I want them to be friends so badly! They could be gym buddies who kiss sometimes. With the right AU you could make this pairing like lesbian Rivamika because those girls do not like each other.

Erumika - I'm into it in theory, but when I think about the pairing I don't really feel anything about it.

Mikasasha - I wish we'd gotten to see more of their friendship. One of you (I forget who lol) also reblogs a lot of romantic Mikasasha and it turns out I'm into that as well. I think Sasha would be a good influence on Mikasa, getting her to loosen up a little, but I guess asking for well-fleshed female friendships in shonen manga is probably a bit much.

Экстероцепция - very spicy! but the writing style is so good, i love it so much!

Первый и последний эксперимент капрала - this one isn't exactly about levihan, but it centers around them, and, oh god, this is the funniest thing i've ever read. i was in tears while reading it, and sometimes i open that fic when i want to have a good laugh. it perfectly captures the atmosphere of the first seasons <3

Вы все не так поняли! - another short and very fluffy! the premise is as simple as it is genius - eren and mikasa look out for a dark corner to have some time for themselves, but they keep bumping into levi and hange, who definetely are 'not together'

Степень безумства - this one is still ongoing, but, oh my god, it's so good....... it's a canon divergence type of fic and it begins just after the start of the uprising. it's so good!!! have i told you how good it is?? the emotions are so raw and captivating and the writing is impecable! there is a little of eruhan on the side (although, a bit of spoiler warning: erwin is not exactly a nice guy there), but the main focus is on levihan. oh, and there is also a lot of platonic mobuhan, and, omg, their friendship there is just the cutest! also the last chapter was soooo tense and filled with so many emotions, i had to sit and stare at the wall for a while bc it sort of short circuited my brain. and then i went back and read it again bc it's so good

i feel the same as well for snk, i read the whole story and have decided to keep my distance from it but i still do love the characters and their relationship with each other. may i ask for your fave characters and why you like them? any ships?

Oh yeah, I didn’t really read the manga after chapter 100-ish? But I did look at the spoilers so I could keep track of what was happening (and I had friends who read it and could tell me what was happening as well)

I think when I first started getting into the fandom back in 2013 my fav character was Levi Ackerman ( and I still love him, the poor dude has been through some shit tbh). Hanji is a close second along with Moblit! I also liked Eren too (at least early Eren lol, not the timeskip Eren in terms of characterization)

I think I related to Levi alot bc despite the challenges he’s had he still keeps going in the hopes that he’s doing something right with his life and choices, and thematically tying into that “no regrets” mindset.

My fav ships from that fandom are all over the place lol: ereri/riren/rivaere, erejean, ererijean, eremin, Mobuhan, levihan, eruri, eruhan, yumihisu, Beruani, reibert, rivetra, springles, ererei, Erumike, erurimike, eruren, jeanmarco, jearmin, mikeri (honestly I really liked how diverse the fanart is- they’ve all made me consider so many ships), Mikani, mikahisu, mikasasha, and there’s probably other parings i’ve seen and appreciated but for the most part ereri is a popular ship so I’ve consumed a lot of content for that as well as erejean.

For ereri I think it’s interesting to explore the dynamic of getting with someone who used to be your superior (but also I have the biggest soft spot for platonic eren and levi where levi takes care of him similar to irondad, but this is also why I love starker and irondad bc they hit different emotional needs and explore different dynamics!)

Erejean needs no explanation it’s the enemies to lovers trope lmao

My NOTP for them: I dislike any Hange/104th ships. But, otherwise, I actually enjoy any other ship involving her. Uh, except for Hange/Shadis… shit is weird.

My BROTP for them: Mobu//han! I adore their relationship, whether platonically or not! Moblit watching out for Hange until the very end will never not hurt my soul - my son didn’t deserve that ending, but it was fitting and I’m sure he wouldn’t have wanted to go out any other way.My OTP for them: Levihan, obviously. I don’t think I would have written a 120k+ slowburn fic for them if they weren’t! Haha. I just… I can go on for days talking about these nerds and their relationship, but I won’t! I just… I really adore them. That’s all.

My second choice pairing for them: proooobably Mobu//han or Eruhan!

My fluffy pairing for them: Mobu//han for sure. There’s so much fluff potential with those two!

My angsty pairing for them: Levihan - especially after the timeskip. Angst potential for daaaaays.

My favorite poly ship for them: EruriHan!!!!!! There are no words to describe how much I love and adore EruriHan, I really wish that there were more content for it. :( one of these days I’ll write something for it, one of these days…

My weirdest pairing for them: Is NanaHan weird? It’s probably not, but yeah! They’d be super cute together!
