in honour of life with luca, i rewatched some life with derek and I have Thoughts.

first of all, why did the middle school kids go out on so many dates? is this normal? did i miss something when i was in a homophobic all girls school?

secondly, the show is riddled so full of gender stereotypes (like all the guys are sloppy and lazy whilst all the girls are neat and organized) that I kinda want to see the teased sequel show come into being so casey or derek have  one of their kids start using they/ them pronouns or something.

thirdly, it was a pretty good show and far better than the disney channel fare that aired contemporaneously. like actually funny in places? not so heightened and ridiculous.

also, the step-sib romantic vibes between them were way worse than i remembered them being. like why did the first season end with derek falling apart because casey liked his best friend? canada has a lot to answer for.

anyway. 10/10 series would recommend

I loved LWL I thought I wouldn’t like it because I hate reboots since most of the time (*cough* Powerpuff girls 2016 *cough* or *cough* Velma *cough*) would ruin the original aka the classics. But I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually good! Us Canadians can do a reboot properly! There was funny moments with the kids & teens, Dasey pretty much acting like they are married, Casey’s husband not cockblocking and not being a third wheel because they wrote him like he’s a terrible husband (hopefully they get a divorce if they make the tv series), Molly being a K-pop fan and wishing Skyler was her sister (writers knew what they were doing) and seeing the old actors like the parents & Sam (Nora looks amazing! She hasn’t even changed!)

I’m hoping they get a Tv show because the movie wasn’t horrible and I’m glad they made the movie first to see if us old fans would be happy and not ruin Dasey and they did the reboot Justice. With a tv show we can get more Dasey scenes and pretty much them having a blended family 😂 plus seeing the cousins interact and Skyler adjusting to a normal school setting, plus the cousins remind me of Lizzie & Edwin dynamic and they probably would get into mischief together with occasional fights but I’m happy they don’t have a romance vibe and seem 100% platonic. Plus the old cast can guest star in some episodes obviously if they want to, so we can see what their characters are up to. They have so many things they could do with the show and seeing Casey getting a divorce.

I know people wish there was more Dasey scenes but it was a movie and they have to introduce 5 new characters and see their dynamic to see if we like them or if it becomes a tv show to see if everyone fits well because old characters can come back in a tv show like Icarly or Raven’s home which had characters from the original tv show making guest appearances or being a character that comes on often. Heck even 90’s show some old characters make a guest star appearance and it 100% makes the episode better and then nostalgia moment.

AHHH!!! And you thought it'd take you at least the weekend to do this, lol. Mix of Dasey AND Robstar, you spoil us. I'm intrigued by all of these, but I'm going to try and limit myself to 3 each.

Robstar - 9: Yes! I love these 2 so much and adding Batman is fantastic, bring on the drama!

ROBSTAR: (9) OKAY LOOK: this is a trilogy that I have been thinking about for YEARS. It's adorable and a little bit angsty, and they are adorable and I LOVE THIS IDEA. One day I will finish it. I think. I hope.

(15) They are penpals; it's an AU and it's sappy as heck.

(18) SOULMATE AU???? Heavily inspired by The Greatest Showman and Zendaya and Zac Efron's characters???? Yes. Again, something I suuuuuper wanna write; I just have to figure out what time period it's set in and how much I wanna play with mixed-race relationships and class-struggles.

DASEY: (1) There is co-parenting!! I am having a blast with my Life with Luca series, even though I, like, have a dozen other fics to write.

(3) This is ONE of the songwriting fics I've told you about, YEAH. I'm hoping that Derek has gained some emotional maturity by the time he's in his 30s, but Skyler has had to have a couple of talks with him already about calling the songs "shitty".

(17) I think about this AU almost every day, no lie. I wish I could focus on it because it's gonna be a blast I think. It is not set during any specific year (bizarre for me, I know), and it involves a lot of music.

During college, they did get closer. They became best friends, each with a spare key to the others place and an open invitation. They'd watch hockey and movies and fight over the remote but the days of hormone-spiked feelings (the whole damn spectrum, it used to feel like for them) were gone. It was easier to fight because they knew their boundaries.

But they would step over them sometimes.

Derek toeing it to spark a reaction he wanted; sometimes a Casey-patented 'der-ek', sometimes a giggle, but never anything that would tip them out of balance.

Casey, always the rule follower, found loop-holes instead. She'd lean into him to get his attention in a crowded room, knowing he'd always put his arm around her shoulder, rubbing his fingers across the seam of her t-shirts.

As a result of them calming down, the family fell closer together. Edwin would call Casey for girl advice, because lets face it, he did not want to follow in every one of his brother's footsteps. Lizzie would call Derek about different ways to fix the soreness in her muscles hours and hours of soccer practice had caused. Marti would call them both, just before she'd go to bed. She was getting too old for bed time stories but she'd talk about her week and then drift off as they told her about theirs.

Then at one of Derek's games, she meets him. His the new center just transplanted in in the middle of the season because he's good, really good. Derek tried not to like the guy but he's genuinely just a really good guy. So the three of them hang out sometimes. He doesn't get weird when they do or say something normal step-siblings shouldn’t, like an innuendo taken too far or a hand resting somewhere for just a step too long.

He'd ask her out and Casey would look at Derek for the answer. It was Derek who told him yes. It was Derek who took her shopping for an outfit. It was Derek who called Emily to come help with her hair and makeup that night.

And so Casey took it as a blessing. She knew they'd missed their mark too.

When the goalie dropped her off, it was at Derek's, even though he'd picked her up at her apartment. Still he got out of the car, opened her door, and held her hand as they walked to the door.

"You knew I'd come here anyway, huh?" Casey was tense as he chuckled at her question. "I know how important it is that he likes me and was hoping the date was good enough to want to spill right away," he looked her in the eyes while he smiled. They were warm and bright, even if she did wish she'd see a hint of wild. Casey would stand in front of him outside of Derek's front door, knowing he was right inside. He'd texted her to check if he should pick up wine or more beer.

"I want this to work," the goalie would say, "Can I call you tomorrow for the verdict?" His smile was infectious and she'd giggle and nod and pull him in for a hug.

It would work. They'd have a summer wedding many, many years down the line. The McDonald/Venturi Clan would spend the week before the wedding in a house on the beach on Prince Edward Island.

Casey would have her feet in the water at the edge of the homes dock right at sunset. Derek would gently nudge her, pulling her back before she'd even come close to falling in, giggling as he sat next to her, his arm in its spot around her shoulders.

She'd place her head of his shoulder and sigh and he'd know what it meant.

"Case, it'll all be fine. He loves you, you love him, the wedding is going to go off without a single hitch because some how you convinced me not to do anything to ruin it. But come on! It'd be for the memories, you only get married once Casey, might as well get it right." She'd look up at him in that way and he'd freeze. "I'm just going to get it as right as I can, " She'd smile to ease the tension that crossed his shoulders, rubbing her fingers along his spine to help it dissipate faster. Derek would pull her closer, press a kiss to her hairline, and leave the conversation at that, keeping their boundaries firmly in place.

The morning of the wedding, she's all smiles. Everything has gone right so far, she thinks, before she sees Derek still in his sweats, 25 minutes before she's supposed to walk down the aisle.

"Der-ek! Why are you not dressed? Are you trying to drive me crazy?" She'd huff as she pulls him toward where she knows his tux is; she'd placed it there herself after all. His head was still thrown back laughing as she pulls all his clothes together for him, "Come on Princess, I'm not even the star of the show here, who cares what I look like?" "I do! You will not be ruining my wedding photo's Derek!" He'd grab her shoulders as she starts to unbutton the dress shirt before taking it off the hanger, and turns her around.

"Casey, take a deep breath," She'd confused why he's so serious until she realizes she's on the verge of hyperventilating. Her eyes dart around the room, looking for anything that might help, "Hey, hey Case, look at me."

It'd all stop when their eyes meet and after a few moments she registers his hands slipping up and down her arms. She closes her eyes and isn't nearly as shocked as she should be, even now, when he pulls her into a hug.

"Hey, everything is alright. I'm not dressed because the flower delivery was late and they needed an extra hand and I didn’t want to get anything on my tux. I would never ruin this for you case okay?" She'd nod into his chest, hoping she'd be able to fix her makeup after this.

They wouldn’t talk about it. Nor would they talk about how he stared at her when she walked down the aisle, how their eyes caught when the goalie turned away to take the rings from his best man.

They would just continue through life in a constant orbit of each other. Some times closer than others. Derek knows he feels more like a moon to her planet but he doesn’t think it'll do any good to talk about it.

So he writes and directs and creates these amazing short films. Everyone is surprised by the emotion in it for Derek Venturi who would stutter the word f-f-feelings, except Casey.

Her and the Goalie would come to screenings, always wielding this huge bouquet of daises, just for Derek. He and the goalie would chat as he overheard her telling people what a wonderful film it'd been, handing out HIS business cards whenever she felt like the person on the other side of the conversation was worthy.

When he won his first award, he thanks her first. It becomes tradition, "I'd like to first and foremost thank my best friend Casey for supporting me through this." Then he'd continue with the standard designed thank you speech.

He'd date but never anything serious. He was content to sit and watch and orbit. He knew he'd given up true happiness when he'd said yes to the goalie for Casey, but she'd earned it this time. He’d do it again and again just to see her as happy as any princess could be.

You know me so well!! (And thank you, I love my username a lot 🧡) So, starting with Dasey, we both know it's going in the "ship it" category!

What made you ship it?

It's purely Ashley and Michael's fault. Even as a tiny child watching it air on TV, I just knew there was something about Casey and Derek. The way they argue, they way they look at each other. The chemistry was off the god damn charts and that is entirely the actors faults. Even rewatching the show now (literally, I'm watching the battle of the bands episode), the chemistry between them is too intense to ignore.

What are your favourite things about the ship?

Uhh, everything? But probably the way they bring out different sides of each other. If I can steal a quote that Rose said in The Vampire Diaries for a moment, "It's not just that she makes him a better person. She does, but he changes her, too. He challenges her. Surprises her. He makes her question her life, her beliefs."

That just sums up exactly what I love about Derek and Casey. They challenge each other. And yeah, they bring out better sides of each other. And just an extra addition: I love how they complain and argue but when it comes down to it, they're there for each other. Casey will drop everything to help Derek if she thinks he really needs it or if he even just... asks. And Derek cares quietly. He calls her dad back when he sees her get upset at the visit going wrong, he spends her entire birthday party videoing it for her so that she'll have something nice to wake up to after the operation. When it's really important to the other, they will do anything for them. And that matters more than any of the countless, pointless arguments.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I can't think of one. I'm pretty sure most Dasey shippers tend to agree on most things when it comes to them!

And now, Sciles! Of course I ship these soft best friends!

What made you ship it?

... I watched the show. No, but seriously, I think I was on my first rewatch of it when I started noticing how they were the best possible romance of the entire show. I read a few fics, watched the show a million times, and now I'm here, forever in love with them.

What are your favourite things about the ship?

Ugh, god, everything! They fufill like all of my favourite tropes, but the most important: childhood best friends to lovers. They're Shawn and Cory. They're Benny and Ethan. They're Scott and Stiles, and it is physically impossible not to see how much they love and adore each other. They would die for each other, but they would also do everything else they possibly could to protect the other from ever getting into a situation where they would need someone to die for them. They know everything about each other, inside and out, better than they know themselves. They're connected in so many ways and I honestly don't think that they can really imagine life without each other.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

That they should have been canon? That they were better than every canon romantic relationship we did get? That they are both equal and are each other's biggest supporters? That even looking at them platonically, they were the real love story of the show?

Gilmore Girls - Rory Gilmore & Jess Mariano. Even if after AYITL they find happiness with other people, I will always adore them.

Life with Derek - Derek Venturi & Casey. I don't even have to explain this one lol. For any anti-Dasey folks out there: It is NOT incest.

One Tree Hill - Lucas Scott and Brooke Davis. They each got their happy ending with someone else but I will always love them together.

Gossip Girl - Dan Humphrey and Blair Waldorf. This couple caught be by surprise in the best way. I loved their relationship, both romantic and platonic. I'm not bitter that they didn't end up together, I'm just grateful I got to enjoy the ride for awhile.

Smallville - Clana - Clark Kent and Lana Lang. I will forever be bitter that they weren't endgame! I'm aware that Superman belongs with Lois Lane. The writers of this show fucked up.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Buffy Summer & Spike. I will throw down over this one! I'm beyond pissed at the comics for giving us what we wanted and then ripping it away.

I’m okay with Lizzie and Edwin! I don’t personally ship them romantically, but they are definitely platonic soulmates in my book. I like that they have an actual siblings dynamic to parallel Casey and Derek. But I’m not against them being a companion pairing to Dasey either, as seems to be most of the fandom’s preference.

And I like Sam/Emily! I tend to default to Emily/Sheldon when I write, but I absolutely see Emily and Sam bonding over how ridiculous their best friends are and developping feelings for each other.

How does my favourite sibling relationship in fiction come from this show? One of the things I absolutely loved about Life with Derek when I first got into it in 2015, is how you would see Derek's demeanour change when he was around his little sister and you saw what a good guy he was. I loved the nicknames that they both gave eachother. It was so sweet!

Thats the look of a man whose thinking 'Wow I'm in love with this girl and I can never have her" The last scene is almost like resignation for Derek. He's not giving up but he's finally letting her go.

1. Home Movies

OK. Their fight at the beginning screams UST (and also kickstarts the episode)

Casey is trying to interview Derek about the family and he surprisingly gets really pissed at her. They fight alot in this show, but this is the first time he legitimately shouts at her while being dead serious/visably hurts her feelings and vice versa.

He's clearly mad that she left him out of something that deeply effects him. Hes never been good at expressing feelings which leads to him bottling them up and letting them out in an unhealthly way (sometimes I feel this dude needs more therpy than Casey). Even though, he likes his new step-family, he still had no say in the matter at the end of the day e.g. This is not a picture perfect family Casey, this is a mess of a family thats making the best of a contrived situation.

And its very obvious to me, that he clearly loves her by this point, and he resents the fact that he does. e.g. 'My Dads decisions put me in this mess'

It gave me a slight reminder of 'Flowers in the Attic' (even though thats a totally different kettle of fish) where the two eldest siblings fall in love with eachother because of the situation they are forced under by their parents (i.e. emotional neglect etc)

I can’t get over Casey being depicted Derek’s adoring secretary in his fantasy in “The Venturian Candidate” and him later revealing that he has a thing for secretaries. How did the writers get away with that? How did they get away with anything on this show?

I mean, even without the later admission, the fantasy sequence was about as blatant as it gets. When I saw it for the first time as an adult I replayed it several times to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

That scene is the main reason I will never believe that the writers weren't in on the Dasey thing. They either knew what they were doing or they were aliens, because platonic secretary fantasies are not a thing here on Earth.
