Starting seeds is an ongoing event here. One of our goals is to reuse or repurpose containers among other things. Working with children and youth it’s always great to have viewing containers. Rather than buy the seed starting trays in the stores, we look around the house and make simple versions here. The family was probably wondering why ai had several plastic containers sitting around but now they can see why. The container pictured was a juice bottle cut lengthwise. There is regular potting soil and rocket salad seeds planted inside. The seeds and soil were sprayed with plain water and two days later seeds have germinated and its very visible. It’s a great classroom , 4-H or Homeschool project. We have more containers used as planters you’ll see posted as seeds germinate. Thanks to all who came to our Manifesto Declaration last Saturday at @theoldbaths Through a performance we built up a plastic garden made with bottles, glasses and straws collected through a recycling campaign in London. Inside the straws we put some kitchen paper, and invited the audience to plant beans and lentils, some of the world’s more sustainable crops. The installation will remain till the 12th of July. Some seeds will grow, others will die, as a methaphor to how we will overcome the plastic excess and Anthropocene’s challenges. Marta Lamovsek “These are the imaginary characters that live in my head. Everyone that sits in my chair inspires a new look. I have lots of people who are camera-shy and have never been photographed by a professional. Sometimes, people are very self-aware and used to being photographed and have their own poses. That happens a lot. I tell them, ‘Forget everything you know. My camera doesn’t click when someone is posing!’” - Marta Lamovsek, Photographer. Like many Dubai expats, Slovenian photographer Marta Lamovsek ended up their almost by accident. When she was brought out from London for a one-off job six years ago, Lamovsek quickly became fascinated by the city and the mix of people who call it home. A keen observer of city life, she found a lot here that caught her eye – particularly in Satwa and old Dubai. It was in that very neighbourhood the starting point for her ongoing series ‘Plastic Garden’ began. In November 2016, Lamovsek was in Satwa looking for materials for another project when she spotted a young Pakistani man leaning against a traffic light and texting. “He got my attention at once with his leaned pose, [he was standing in a] very graceful way. I felt this powerful urge and although I never done this to a stranger on the street before, I decided to ask him straight away if he would be willing to make a portrait session with me.” With a bit of translation help from a bystander, Lamovsek and the young man, named Khaled, arranged to meet the next week. While they worked, she asked Khaled to hold a flower, and the project was born. It was a magic moment. The portraits are stunning – full of colour and emotion.
