Oil and chemical companies who created a high-profile alliance to end plastic pollution have produced 1,000 times more new plastic in five years than the waste they diverted from the environment, according to new data obtained by Greenpeace. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) was set up in 2019 by a group of companies which include ExxonMobil, Dow, Shell, TotalEnergies and ChevronPhillips, some of the world’s biggest producers of plastic. They promised to divert 15m tonnes of plastic waste from the environment in five years to the end of 2023, by improving collection and recycling, and creating a circular economy. Documents from a PR company that were obtained by Greenpeace’s Unearthed team and shared with the Guardian, suggest a key aim of the AEPW was to “change the conversation” away from “simplistic bans of plastic” that were being proposed in 2019 amid an outcry over the scale of plastic pollution leaching into rivers and harming public health. Early last year the alliance target of clearing 15m tonnes of waste plastic was quietly scrapped as “just too ambitious”. The new analysis by energy consultants Wood Mackenzie looked at the plastics output of the five alliance companies; chemical company Dow, which holds the AEPW’s chairmanship, the oil companies ExxonMobil, Shell and TotalEnergies, and ChevronPhillips, a joint venture of the US oil giants Chevron and Phillips 66. The data reveals the five companies alone produced 132m tonnes of two types of plastic; polyethylene (PE) and PP (polypropylene) in five years – more than 1,000 times the weight of the 118,500 tonnes of waste plastic the alliance has removed from the environment in the same period. The waste plastic was diverted mostly by mechanical or chemical recycling, the use of landfill, or waste to fuel, AEPW documents state. The amount of plastic produced is likely to be an underestimate as it only covers two of the most widely used polymers; polyethylene which is used for plastic bottles and bags, and polypropylene, used for food packaging. It does not include other major plastics such as polystyrene.

Seriously. Really.
Even if is says it's recycled. Even if it says it's recyclable. Even if it's colored blue or green.
Including trash bags. (Don't put your recyclables in a trash bag. Dump them out of bags or boxes into the bin. If your recycling is so wet or dirty that you're feeling squeamish about letting it out of the bag, it's too wet and dirty to go in the recycling.)

Plus, if we standardized glass container specs it would be really easy to implement in multiple industries.
Obviously, there are logistical challenges but I think they would be more than compensated for by the net benefits.
we gotta figure out the prescription bottle recycling thing man I get like 12 of them every month and it's an enormous amount of single use plastic that is going directly into landfills and the ocean. there's zero reason for pharmacies not to have empty bottle dropoffs, it's dry storage and easy to clean. one problem is plastic gets micro scratches and dings in it that make it difficult or impossible to sanitize to a medical standard, which would be solved by switching to glass bottles, but then glass causes transport problems with weight and fragility. I've researched this and the only way to recycle prescription bottles in my city is to, on your own, mail them somewhere that will do it for you. I think some of the privatized recycling services will do the same thing but I'm deeply suspicious of those services and suspect most of them are not actually recycling anything. the recycling infrastructure is so bad in the USA and the majority of our plastic recycling is not actually happening, it's just fake garbage sorting that ends up in landfills anyway. we HAVE to go back to using glass for everything, plastic recycling is a dead end.
#everything i buy should not break immediately to go shed microplastics in a dump for the rest of time#most of the plastic that actually gets recycled only SORT OF gets recyled its not at all the infinite process we were told

Of course I would pick up and recyle every microscopic piece of plastic by my own hands if my disabled body would let me.

Was almost immediately sold by using silicone as a plastic alternative until I thought about how its recycled once at the end of its "life". Then I realized how little I know about this product and what it even is.
I enjoyed learning about silicone and how it has different types, applications, and recyling methods. I didnt know it was so abundant in the Earth. Its a better alternative to plastic, but, bc its a strong polymer material, it still takes more specialized recycling methods that are less abundant than plastic and require more work to dispose of responsibly. Also it takes just as much energy to manufacture, and subsequently, to recycle. Both are considerations for conscious consumers about fueling its demand.
I still might look into replacing many of my plastic items with silicone, but I'll have to be sure to research where I can submit the materials for recycling once the products reach their end of lifespan, or if theyre damaged beyond repair or reuse. Hopefully the facilities wont be far or accept mail in orders if they are far enough to make the investment worthwhile.
Overall, I'm relieved that silicone is different from plastic (rather than a type of plastic or of crude-oil origin), but still concerned about its impact. I think its still a more viable alternative and will look into investing it in and supporting companies with take-back/recycling programs for discarded silicone.

Use radiation in plastic recycling, PH nuke institute says
On November 16, 2023, The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute wants to use radiation to recycle plastic and decrease waste. They believe that radiation can break down plastic so that it can be reused for various purposes, such as construction materials.
As a student, I would like to respectfully share my opinion on this news, expressing my strong belief in its immense benefits for our environment. This project has the potential to effectively address the pressing issue of accumulated waste, which has become a growing concern in our society. By implementing such initiatives, we cannot only alleviate the negative impacts resulting from excessive waste but also lay the foundation for further economic development and growth. For humans, response is associated with change. For me a radiation plastic recyling is a pastiche from a “Recyling Man” movie. “use building material as well as nice edging” from arcilla said. When we talk about PNRI, first irradiate them and then manipulate the banding characteristic of the plastic so that they can use stripes that they can be used as construction materials for examples, besides there are many more. For me taking care of the waste is associated with good future.

husband is really into model-making and specificalky scratch-bashing lately so now whenever any container or plastic thing is empty i wash it out and open the door to his office and stand there and silently rotate it so he can see it frm all angles and let him decide if he wants to put it in the stash or if i should put it in the recyling bin like caesar looking down upon the gladiators in the pit

continuing through a lens - making props - starting off ❓❗
to start with the props i wanted for the background of my animation, i figured it would be best to start with a disco ball! in my story board the first and final frames of the narrative were going to be disco balls anyway so i wanted it to look good!
for my first go at making a disco ball, i got a small ball made out of styrofoam and covered it in small pieces of plastic that i had cut into squares, to act as the holographic panels on full size disco balls. i then used some chrome silver spray paint over it.
ibsr... i was not too happy with this version so i decided to try and make another. i didn't like it too much because the sheet of plastic i used to cut little squares out of was... not ideal!🤣 it was a very hard to do for the scalpel i was using and because of how i struggled with it, the squares were super irregular. i knew if i tried again i would likely get a much more uniform result.
in a later attempt, i used a sheet of silver reflective card cut into little squares. this was a lot easier of a process - it saved time because of course, it was a lot easier to cut! and since the paper was already silver (and shiny too - i didn't realise chrome and reflective are not the same! lol !!) it saved me from needing to spray paint the prop.
in all honesty, i didn't like this result too much either. instead of things being messy like the last time, i had accidentally stuck my squares in the wrong pattern on the ball of styrofoam. this was a pretty minor problem, but it really bugged me in the moment as i don't think i had enough time to complete ANOTHER ball so i stuck with this one.
try to visualise, (if you even care.........) but i stuck my squares down in a way that aligned all the squares with each other, but not necessarily aligned with the shape of the *spherical ball* i was sticking them on to, y'know?
moving on from this, i actually began to paint the background of my set (do NOT get ur hopes up - not much happens from here on i fear...)
i used a recyled box as the base, and three foam boards as the 'walls' of my club setting. i wanted to try and create a grungy, worn-in, industrial look. to do this, i used a mixture of black, blue and purple paints applied with a dry brush. if i were to do this part again, i would add some brown, just for depth.

AI-Anon here - I messaged you because I woke up with a headache, and I follow you, I made the mistake of clicking past my chatgpt/ai content filter, and chose violence instead of peace.
😅 The first thing I say every time someone brings up AI to me is to correct them to "Bullshit Machine" because that is the most efficient way of describing the actual product. The thing is that there are a lot of situations where bullshit is good enough - and many more in which it is catastrophic.
and that's really the nuance that I see most disregarded from the conversation - AI has huuge weakspots - from the impact on the environment, to the hallucinations, to a whole lot of others. But by blanket ignoring the people who use it, you don't learn from how they have dealt with those issues, or get the chance to educate them if they are unaware.
Except the environmental issue, that is a large one. But so is the use of rare earth metals in cell phones and electronics. Recyling is in shambles. Yesterday I ate a hamburger. There are a lot of individual choices I make every day for convenience that in aggregate are huge problems. I personally think it is more productive to question the large-scale implementation of AI in every app than criticize individual specific and intentional uses of it. Personally, I HATE the way ai is bundled into every type of search bar these days - it's both a terrible use of resources and a source of misinformation.
Lastly, in one of your previous messages you suggested alternative methods to compensate for my word recall issue. I use AI because it's fastest and works best with the way my brain struggles when I am deep in the midst of brainfog. I use a thesaurus when I am looking for options to change the tone of my writing. I am suuure you have always loooved when someone suggested other ways for you to deal with your adhd because its definitely one of those things that has one size fits all solutions. <- buckets of sarcasm, but not meant to be mean

Okay but honestly this is so relatable, anon. I do this all the time. 😭
But by blanket ignoring the people who use it, you don't learn from how they have dealt with those issues, or get the chance to educate them if they are unaware.
I definitely try to remind users that ChatGPT isn't like google, and you should be googling instead of using it as a research tool, but so many people are younger and just assume I hate fire and think Thomas Edison was a witch. Sometimes, imo most of the time, if you want to learn something, you're better off going to Google.
There are a lot of individual choices I make every day for convenience that in aggregate are huge problems. I personally think it is more productive to question the large-scale implementation of AI in every app than criticize individual specific and intentional uses of it. Oh, absolutely, and I agree that the onus of things like that is on the companies rather than the individuals. It's not your water bottle that's the plastic in the ocean, it's the industrial fishing nets. But half a liter per "conversation", for something I could just as easily look up through other means, is definitely a higher cost than I personally feel comfortable with.
I also have a lot of resentment for the way that AI scraping seems to be opt-out (instead of opt-in)(if you can opt out at all), and the fact that I can't fucking escape it. One or two rich morons decided this was the wave of the future and now it's everyone's problems.
I am suuure you have always loooved when someone suggested other ways for you to deal with your adhd because its definitely one of those things that has one size fits all solutions. <- buckets of sarcasm, but not meant to be mean
Fair enough, you just happened to hit on something I'm passionate about, both as an artist and an environmentalist, so I reacted a bit strongly.
For the record, having cooled down and stepped back a bit, while your reasoning and use of AI aren't my favorite thing, and while I stand by my original point of "anti-AI isn't inherently ableist", I do want to apologize for anything that may have come off as unnecessarily harsh. I do think there's a place for AI, but I don't think a novel-writing competition is the place for it.

I'm aiming to replace many of the unnecessary plastic containers in my home (that I will eventually donate or recycle to a company like Terra Cycle) and with natural wicker baskets alongside as many metal and wood-based containers and structures as I can.
Wicker baskets are nostalgic to me because I grew up with many in my home, and they have a more natural aesthetic I've always liked. Also, when made of natural fibers, theyre recyclable and biodegradable. Though, I should do a little more research on baskets with coated fibers for their recylability. One day I'd like to make these baskets as itd be extending a human, as well as African heritage of weaving into my life that is a great skill to have. I digress lol.
Today I went thrifting and bought a few wicker baskets to replace some plastic items in my home and I tried to make sure they were all natural rather than synthetic fiber. Many were very dusty, and as with all thrifted items, one should clean them. But I intuitively knew there was probably specialized ways to clean wicker baskets than any basket to prevent damage. And i didnt want to damage the baskets i just bought even if they were very liquidated prices (wasting money wouldnt have been an issue; one basket I bought, for instance, was 99¢ lol).
I like how the page I linked gives simple instructions and affordable, accessible tools for cleaning wicker baskets. I've already cleaned one and while I could have used a little less water, and been slightly more gentle, the instructions worked.
I have a few bigger baskets to dust and clean but at least I'm reassured on how to keep the clean.
