favorite and least favorite parts of each trek, with absolutely no thought put into it before making this list:

Alright so confession. I have never read or seen JoJo. So my question about DiaDop is WHAT IS GOING ON? I thought they were coworkers but I see posts that imply they're sharing a body? but sometimes not? Is it a Yugi and Atem situation? Suicide Med | Freida McFadden | Published 2014 | *SPOILERS*

There's a reason Southside Medical School has been nicknamed "Suicide Med". For the last six years, every year one student has taken his own life.

Except for last year. Last year was a murder-suicide.

The press has pointed to the heavy workload as the culprit in the high suicide rade. Some students believe that the school is cursed. And others beleive that the deaths may not be suicides at all - that it's no coicidence that Dr. Conlon, the Southside's quirky but beloved anatomy professor, joined the staff on the very year that the suicides began.

Either way, the same question echoes through the minds of every first year student at Suicide Med:

Who will be next to die?

Southside Medical School has a dark history. Every year for the past 6 years, a student has committed suicide in their first year. And last year, there was a murder-suicide when one student killed his girlfriend, and then turned the gun on himself. Everyone knows about the schools dark past, except for Heather...a new first year medical student who learns about the stories while attending the school.

For Heather, medical school doesn't come easy. She struggles with both biochemistry, although not nearly as much as she struggles with anatomy. On top of this, she is attempting to keep a long distance relationship going with her medical student boyfriend, Seth, who is attending another school 250+ miles away. But when Seth decides to break things off, Heather quickly gets into another relationship with another student and lab partner, Abe Kaufman.

Abe is a large man, riddled with both fat and muscle. He is a genuinely sweet person, and takes his relationship with Heather very seriously, having been smitten with her since their first day of school. However, Abe is dealing with his own dark past. He has been keeping a secret hidden from Heather, and for the majority of his life. On his backside, Abe has an extra "eye"...one that actually blinks. When Abe visits a plastic surgeon in order to have the eye removed, being too nervous to be intimate with Heather with it still intact, he learns that in utero, he had a twin that ended up being abosrbed into his body. Scans show that the eye is also attached to brain tissue, and that the eye itself feels some type of emotion when shown things. Therefore, surgeons do not want to have the eye removed as it could be considered unethical. Instead, Abe finds a shady plastic surgeon to do the surgery, and after the tissue is also removed, Abe becomes a changed man...in the worst way. He becomes irritated and irate, and even beats a man on the street senseless. Abe begins to wonder if losing the eye and brain tissue was a good idea, as it seems his twin brother that he absorbed in the womb is what kept him being such a sweet kid.

Another student Mason is vying for the top spot in the class so he can get into the plastic surgery residency. Mason came from a prominent family, his father being a surgeon and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. They're wealthy, and rightfully so as Mason's father is acclaimed in the medical world. However, Mason begins to suspect that their anatomy professor, Dr. Matt Conlon, is somehow involved in the suicides and murder-suicide of the previous students, along with the murder of the cadaver he and his lab partners are working on. "Frank" as he dubbed him on the first day of labs, didn't die of anything obvious..and Mason begins to get curious. When asked, Dr. Conlon tells Mason that it is confidential information, and this further Mason's suspicions that he murdered Frank as well. He begins acting even more erratically, hearing voices, losing sleep and losing focus in his classes, to the point that he even fails one of the practical exams.

Ginny, another student who is also vying for the top spot in the class, is on the older side of the students at the school at 26. She started late after helping take care of her father who had Parkinson's disease, and passed away the year before she started school. Ginny spends a lot of her time studying, though she feels less than her classmates because Dr. Conlon frequently forgets her name, as well as doesn't give her the credit but instead gives it to Mason. But, in the end, she and Mason begin a casual relationship with each other when their studying late into the night at the library. But, in order to continue her rise as the top student in the class, Ginny begins drugging Mason with her father's medications.

Rachel, who is obviously intelligent and smart, albeit in a stranger way, begins sleeping with Professor Conlon. For years, when she was struggling with a class, she would suicide her teacher or professors, starting at the age of 16. However, after she and Dr. Conlon sleep together the first time, he makes it painfully clear that he refuses to do anything about her grades just because they slept together AND he knows about her ruse, as he was warned by one of her former college professors whose life was ruined by her actions. But, instead, the two of them end up in a romantic relationship, and with proper studying and assistance, Rachel's grades begin to go up on their own.

However, Ginny finds out about Rachel and Matt's relationship, and begins blackmailing them. When Ginny requests the final exam be placed inside of a locker in the locker room, Rachel prints the test in Matt's office though Matt finds the last page and believes that Rachel did it on purpose.

Rachel confesses to Matt that she was being blackmailed because someone found out about them, and she was doing it to protect him, not herself. Matt believes her, but their conversation is interrupted by Mason appearing at Matt's office. Rachel hides underneath his desk, and Matt sits down in front of her in order to hide her, hoping that Mason is simply there to discuss the exam. But, instead of that, Mason holds Matt against his will with a gun pointed to his head. Mason is still hellbent that Matt was involved in the suicides and murdered "Frank", and he shoots him in the head, instantly killing him.

Rachel finds Ginny, and the two of them go off in search of help, though Ginny realizes that this is her fault for drugging Mason to the point that he began having hallucinations and hearing voices. Abe, who is worried about Mason after finding a lone bullet left in their apartment, goes to the school and finds Mason holding a student named Charly McKenna hostage. He is able to talk Mason down enough tha the lowers the gun, but when another student enters in the lab at the same time, Abe is able to subdue Mason by stabbing him with the scalpel he grabbed when he first entered the room.

It is now several years later, and medical student Emma is interracting with Ginny, now Dr. Zaleski, in the emergency room at Southside Hospital. She also interracts with Abe Kaufman, who has become a general surgeon in order to deal with his hostile thoughts, and he and Heather, Dr. McKinley, are now married and have a son. Heather has become a pediatrician.

When Ginny sends Emma off to get her coffee, she receives help with the coffee machine from a janitor named Trey, who was in prison with who we can only assume was Mason. Mason appears to have died in prison after Trey had left, and when Emma grabs the coffee cup to bring to Ginny, she notices white flecks floating inside the cup. She believes she may have been seeing things, but it makes sense...as Ginny was the one who had drugged Mason to the point that he became an entirely different person in such a short period of time. This is where Suicide Med ends.

Fast Foods are Disrupting Chemicals

Are you a fast food junkie? If you are, you may want to rethink the costly convince that could possibly be making you sicker each time you are trying to save time or just being too lazy to cook. I can say that because I have been guilty of it more than I would like to admit.

Many ingredients are found in fast food that can compromise your health. These convenience meals come with endocrinedisrupting chemicals. Studies have proved that people eating drive-through hamburgers and takeout pizzas have higher levels of phthalates in their urine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that between 2003 and 2010, data revealed urine tests from 8,900 people of all ages had higher levels of phthalates. This is defined as food from restaurants without “table service” as McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, sandwich shops, Starbucks and other casual dining and reported by Time Magazine. They found that higher levels of two substances occur when phthalates break down in the body. These two substances are DEHP and DiNP.

This would certainly make a lot of people take a second look at that quick trip through the drivein window! It may be faster, but not safer or healthy. Those who got 35% of their calories from fast food in a 24 hour period had nearly 24% higher levels of DEHP and 39 % higher DiNP in their urine than those who had not consumed any fast food. Studies show exposure to the phthalate metabolite DEHP can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system, especially the developing testes of prenatal and neonatal males. Now that is something to think about. Research has also linked both DEHP and DiNP to increased insulin resistance in adolescents.

Di(2ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a highly lipophilic (fatsoluble) chemical that is loosely chemically bonded to the plastic, allowing it to leach out into other fatcontaining solutions in contact with the plastic.

Diisononyl Phthalate (DiNP), is a commonly used plasticizer in flexible PVC products. Even though considered harmless from a health and environmental perspective, more recent research suggests it may in fact have similar effects as DEPH and other phthalates.

Isn’t it ironic that we might be eating a plastic substance? Not something I want to do. Avoiding the fast food line can be a simple way to cut Phthalate exposure. One reason fast food exposes you to higher levels of plasticizing chemicals is because workers use plastic gloves when handling each and every ingredient, and that’s a source of phthalate contamination, too, over and beyond the actual packaging. Japan actually banned vinyl gloves for use in food establishments back in 2001 due to their phthalate content. In the U.S. the use of vinyl gloves has actually increased.

The National Restaurant Association and the American Chemical Society respond saying that the phthalate levels found in fast food are “well below” levels the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deems potentially harmful to human health. However, EPA safety levels for DEHP have not been revised since 1988. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see what a new study by EPA would show?

Health risks associated with Phthalates are “genderbending” chemicals causing males of all species to become more female. The chemicals have disrupted the endocrine systems of wildlife, causing testicular cancer, genital deformations, low sperm counts and infertility in a number of species that scientists suspect may affect human fertility and reproduction. The endocrine system plays a role in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function and metabolism. Here are some examples that have been found:

Reduced IQ in children

Decreased dysgenesis syndrome

Interference with sexual differentiation in utero

Enlarged prostate glands, testicular cancer, breast cancer and uterine fibroids

Impaired ovulatory cycles and polycystic ovary disease

Numerous hormonal disruptions and metabolic disease

Early or delayed puberty

Disturbed lactation

Toxicity to developing male reproductive systems

Neurodevelopmental delays, inattention, hyperactivity and symptoms of autism

Miscarriage and preterm birth

Allergies and respiratory problems

While Sonia has access to the majority of the Royal Family's crown jewels as the crown princess (and eventually most, if not all, of it when she becomes Queen), most of the collection is kept for special occasions and appearances only. State dinners, balls, galas, and anything warranting a black tie dress code would bring into question with her stylists which set should be loaned to her. Choosing an inappropriate piece in design, or a tiara she's worn recently, or an item whose origins conflict with the country and/or guest she's visiting or greeting are all terrible faux pas!

But her day-to-day wear is a lot more practical. In her canon design for her In Utero uniform, she wears a pair of stud earrings (usually white gold or yellow gold balls, or round pearls), a faceted sapphire brooch set in 24k yellow gold filigree, and a yellow gold tennis bracelet. I'd imagine she would choose something similar at Hope's Peak, minus the brooch.

Otherwise, most of her jewelry is classic, timeless, and most importantly, real. Plastic gems, cubic zirconia, etc. is all seen as tacky and costume jewelry (and while Sonia is all for it, her family would never give her moissanite), and her look is styled to be polished and discreet at her young age. Sonia's daily/routine jewelry is almost all gifted (also appropriate in the family: it's seen as irresponsible, if not tacky, for a young woman to buy her own fine jewelry before she's well out of school age), and ranges from a variety of pendants (solid gold, pearl, gemstones, etc.) on delicate chains (one necklace at a time is worn for official events but she may layer them in her casual outfits if they're on different length chains), at least one string of pearls, studs, small and thin hoops, and drop earrings in a variety of gemstones in white and yellow gold settings, a classic watch once she hits her university years (likely Cartier, in the Tank style or something similarly understated but elegant. In the Royal Family, children do not need watches: they are accompanied by tutors, nannies, and/or parents everywhere), discreet bangle, cuff, and tennis bracelets (and never worn in a stack. A Cartier Love bracelet in plain gold or four diamonds only is the only bracelet that should be on a wrist if worn. Same goes for the classic Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra or any other sort of classic piece that has been worn to the death by celebrities everywhere in giant bracelet stacks).

Rings are allowed for the right hand only after she turns eighteen until she is officially engaged (as it makes too much speculation in the press otherwise). She is also only allowed one piercing per ear, in each earlobe. Sonia isn't permitted to have multiple piercings, body piercings, or tattoos, for that matter. You will never see her wear any jewelry with a giant luxury brand's label on it, or anything that overwhelms her. Much of what she wears is inherited, if it isn't outright gifted to her and she's permitted to keep it. Her gifts aren't always from the big luxury jewelry brands either: independent brands that fit the aesthetic her family needs her to fit into are also considered and supported.

That said...

...she went ham once she got to Japan and bought all the plastic, gaudy jewelry she could carry from the DR equivalent of Shibuya 109. She just never wears it in front of her family because they'd demand she take it off. Giant fake pearls? Bows of all sorts? Creepy kawaii pastel horror and Halloween motifs? Yeah. She loves it all!

Emeralds and diamonds are what's found the most in the Royal Family's collection and Sonia likes them, but she also enjoys pearls and sapphires quite a bit as well. She has a few sterling silver pieces too, but mostly, it's gold of some sort. Think classic and timeless: something Sonia could, and likely will, pass down to her own children.

"Similar to the ways in which Indigenous peoples can undergo a violent process through which we rid our colonial mentalities, I argue that animals can be liberated from their colonized subjecthood through an aided 'process of desubjectification'. That is, thinking through animality as an infrastructure of decolonization re-positions animal bodies as agents of anti-colonial resurgence.They can consequently engender 'forms of energy that are capable of engaging the forces that keep [Indigenous people and animals] tied to [a] colonial mentality and reality'. Settler colonialism has therefore required the normalization of speciesism within Indigenous communities to obfuscate the radicality of Indigenous-animal relations. In that sense, recalling the representation of animals in Indigenous cosmologies/oral traditions and unsettling speciesism as a 'colonial mentality' must be prioritized in decolonial thought..."

This zine contains three critiques from anti-authoritarians in France critical of the Tiqqunists and their actions in post-ZAD struggles. For many outside of the situation, the narrative most widely accepted is one that reduces the situation to mere identity politics; White animal rights activists vs Indigenous people. Indigenous writer Linda Hogan and Seattle writer Brenda Peterson journeyed to Neah Bay to interview Makah elders who were breaking the silence about this narrative and speaking out against their tribeâ€™s return to whaling.

I don’t think Meghan was pregnant reasoning being how big her bump was for a first pregnancy and also her pre pregnancy weight/size being very very skinny.

She didn’t gain any weight whatsoever other than a large bump, which doesn’t make sense as her body would have had to compensate for the huge weight gain with leg, breast, ass size increasing too but also swollen ankles etc. she had none of that and then there is the fact that her bump kept increasing and descending in size, changing shape and moving up and down.

True pregnancy bumps don’t do that. I work as a receptionist in an OBGYN and have picked up a few things over the years and also like most, know what happens with pregnancies.

Pippa was big with Arthur only in the latter stages of her pregnancy and he was a good birth weight for the size she grew bump wise. Archie was far too small for the size Meghan was. Her bump from what I’ve seen, heard about in my work in an OBGYN is typical for a twin pregnancy.

If she was indeed pregnant. I think its most likely true she had IVF with multiples implanted due to her age, rumored fertility issues etc. and most likely said she was having twins (it is common for narcissistic mothers to sometimes to claim a false twin pregnancy and then say that one died in utero just for the attention) and also wore plastic rubber bumps to make herself look bigger. She has never looked genuinely happy around Archie or genuinely loving towards him, and from what I’ve learned, seen about narcissistic mothers is that Meghan is definitely one, and they are never happy not getting the gender they want (gender selection does sometimes not work) and she wanted a girl to merch, mold and use against Charlotte.

Maybe people think that she was padding to make herself look bigger in order to draw even more attention to it.

since submerging an egg in vinegar makes the eggshell dissolve into the vinegar, do you think the egg's chakra would be retained within the vinegar, and if so, could tori perform fuinjutsu with it?

Interesting question! My gut response is no. Below the cut is my reasoning why. FULL DISCLAIMER that most of my knowledge of how embryonic development works comes from watching it in real time with fish (and chickens are not fish), and also I wrote this piecewise while also uuuuuh drinking leftover Thanksgiving wine. Oops.

So, in my interpretation of chakra in Narutoland, chakra is an energy contained in all living cells (although not all cells are created equal in terms of chakra production). A dead or nonliving cell can still contain chakra, which lowly dissipates from the cell at time of death until it's gone.

So, what does this mean for a developing embryo? Apparently, if you're born from the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, you get... whiskers marks. Given the bijuu are supposedly giant chakra monsters (??), I'm interpreting this as maternal chakra being transferred to a fetus in utero in order to help it develop, the same way various nutrients from the mother are also transferred to it.

In egg-laying animals, the mother has to provide all the nutrients and chakra an embryo needs in the egg itself. Therefore, I will say a fresh (but unfertilized) chicken egg from the grocery store will have chakra from the mother, which slowly dissipates when the egg fails to develop (but in a fertilized egg, the embryo will start producing its own chakra at some point in development). From my understanding of how eggs develop, I think the original oocyte becomes the yolk of the egg (and, like, the embryo), and the chicken builds the rest of the egg around it. This includes the albumin layers (egg white), egg membranes, and then the shell.

As an embryo develops, it basically "eats" the yolk. So I think the yolk would have the most maternal chakra (since it IS the oocyte, and the "food" source, and the part made first), with the outer layers having less and less residual maternal chakra as you move outward. Ergo, I think egg shells are the part of the egg least likely to have chakra.

THEREFORE, I don't think an egg shell itself has much chakra. There might be some when it's fresh out of a chicken, but it's sort of a moot point for a grocery store egg. Potentially the dissipating chakra from the inner egg could get caught in the vinegar itself? I think, given that Plasticity operates on the idea that chakra can be infused into a liquid, chakra getting "caught" in a liquid the egg is in tracks. So the vinegar collected from hours of marination probably has some chakra, but it's not from the shell-- it's what's being given off by the egg itself. Given the egg I'm using in my actual experiment is super old and unfertilized, probably you couldn't get a lot of chakra from its fictional equivalent. Maybe after Tori has done a lot of troubleshooting on nonhuman chakra sources, if she was using a very fresh vinegar egg, she could use the vinegar.... but probably not from an old egg :(

So Close

(I know this timeline doesn't made sense but oh well)

Amelia sat in the stiff, plastic chair in the waiting room of the OB/GYN floor, her fingertips gracing the underside of the small bump that had formed over the last couple weeks as her second trimester progressed. Link was late, as always. Probably jogging through the corridors of some random floor of the hospital. His ability to get lost in a hospital he’d been working at for the last three years was almost admirable. Sometimes she’d find him wandering through vacant stairwells and poking his head into random offices, completely disoriented and probably holding a string of patients up. She did enjoy when he’d get lost on the neuro floor because it meant that she’d probably get a short visit if he managed to find her under the pile of paperwork that had formed since Edwards had left. Her fellow had always taken care of that type of stuff. Amelia had completely forgotten how to function without her. She glanced at the clock again.

“Hey!” Link’s voice snapped her out of her daze and she glanced up to find him leaning on the doorframe of the waiting room.

“Hi,” she breathed, giving him a nervous smile before focusing behind him on the cheesy poster that outlined some medical miracle about a set of triplets that were supposed to not have made it out of utero. She found herself shuddering at the thought.

“You okay?” Links brows were knit together in concern and he quickly closed the space between them. “You look worried.”

“I just have this pit in my stomach,” she responded, staring at the ground and trying to physically shake off the feeling that she’d woken up with that morning. “I feel like something is wrong.”

“Like nauseous?” Link was trying to understand, he’d noticed the change in behavior as they’d woken up that morning but had been late for work and wasn’t able to check in on her. She shook her head in response, interlocking her fingers together at the curve of her stomach. Link was about to question further when he was interrupted by the sound of their names being called into Carina’s examination room

“She’ll be in shortly." The nurse smiled softly, as she closed the door gently behind her. Link held out his hands to his girlfriend as she awkwardly hoisted herself up onto the reclined chair.

“Moving much today?” He asked, trying to distract her from whatever she was in deep thought about. Amelia shook her head, surprising him.

“They’ve been pretty still.” Link had finally been able to feel a kick a couple of days ago and was still completely mesmerized by the idea. The flutters had started a little while before, shocking her at first because it was something that she never actually experienced with Christopher, despite the tricks her mind had played on her.

“Ciao,” Carina greeted them as she entered the chilly examination room and slid into the swivel chair beside the ultrasound machine. “Good to see you guys again. How are we feeling? Eighteen weeks now, yes?” Amelia nodded, Link could tell she was nervous as she swallowed uncomfortably.

“What’s wrong, Mia?” He said aloud, receiving a look of confusion from Carina. He wrapped his warm hands around her cold ones and could tell that she was on the verge of tears.

“Everything’s probably fine,” she shook her head uneasily as Carina and Link hesitated in silence. Finally she picked up the light blue bottle of ultrasound gel and spread it over her stomach carefully. “Can we get this over with? I have surgery and I still need to get lunch or Link will attack me for not eating enough.” She tried to smile at him but he could tell that she was internally freaking out. When he didn’t return her enthusiasm she looked away, fixating on the ultrasound which had just whirled to life. Carina expertly guided the wand around Amelia’s abdomen before glancing at the couple worriedly. Amelia felt as though time stood still when the obstetrician bit her lower lip and turned the monitor slowly out of their view. Link’s grip on her hand loosened and he muttered something incoherent in confusion. He didn’t understand what that meant or what was going on like she did. He didn’t know that the way Carina was staring at that screen meant that something was undoubtedly wrong. She wouldn’t either if she hadn’t experienced that same look before, worn on her best friend as she delivered Amelia the news that resulted in one of the worst days of her life.

“What’s wrong with them?” She finally broke the silence. “What’s wrong with our babies?”

“I should get a second opinion,” Carina finally responded, tearing her eyes away from the screen and looking at the anxious couple. “I’m so sorry.”

“I don’t understand.” Link felt like he was a million miles away and that everyone in the room knew something he didn’t.

“What do you think it is?” Amelia found the words slipping out of her mouth before she decided if she even wanted to know the answer.

“TTTS,” Carina replied, hoping to god that she didn’t have to spell it out for them. The way Amelia recoiled made it obvious that she didn’t have to. “We don’t have a lot of time.”

“Which one is weaker?” Amelia asked so fast that Link had barely processed Carina’s response.

“The girl,” the OB replied, glancing at the heart beat once again to confirm before nodding.

“Have you done the procedure?” Her pregnant co-worker’s voice was as fragile as a china doll.

“Dr. Robbins is the only one who has successfully completed multiple solos in North America,” Carina forced herself to continue. “She’s overseas at a conference. Wouldn’t be able to make it to Seattle until tomorrow night if she got on a plane immediately.” She could tell that her male co-worker was in a daze, trying to understand what the pair were even talking about while also stealing nervous glances at girlfriend.

“I need to call Addison, can you just give us a second?” The neurosurgeon begged. Carina nodded, stepping out of the room and thanking god she could finally breathe again. Amelia picked up her phone with shaky hands and found Addison’s name almost immediately, willing for her ex sister-in-law to pick up.

“Amelia, what?” Link’s voice made it evident that he had finally made the connection that something was wrong.

“We don’t have a lot of time,” she willed her voice to stay level. “Addie?”

“Hey, Amy!” Addison’s voice was light and cheerful as were most of her friends who lived in L.A.

“Have you done a twin endoscopic laser ablation?” She found herself blurting out, not knowing if she had the mental ability to engage in small talk. Link had gone so white she thought he might pass out beside her.

“I’ve watched a couple and assisted on a couple when I was working under Kypros in the U.K.” Addison’s voice was suddenly solemn. “Why, do you have a friend?” The phone’s static crackled as Amelia tried to find a way to put everything into words. “Amy...no.”

“Yeah,” her voice cracked into a million pieces and Link regained enough composure to tug her into what he hoped was a comforting embrace.

“I’m getting on a plane,” Addison’s voice rang clear, loud enough for Link to understand. “We’re going to fix this. I’ll read every article there is to read on my flight and we’ll fix this, okay?”

“Okay.”

Link wasn’t known to get aggressive but it took everything he had not to punch a hole in the wall of the room that the couple was frozen in after finally learning the seriousness of the position they were in.

“Even if the surgery is successful, it’s rare that the donor twin will survive,” Amelia added numbly, as Link led her into an on-call room.

“Addison’s going to come,” Link didn’t know what else to say, “and she’s going to figure this out.” He guided her onto the bed and allowed her to burrow her head into the crook of his neck. He undid the clasp to the bra that she’d been complaining was getting too small for weeks now and placed it beside them gently. It was the fact that she was silent that worried him the most. There were hardly any secrets or hidden passive aggression in their relationship. Everything on Amelia’s mind was almost immediately blurted out and he was barely ever kept in the dark about how she was feeling. “Do you want to talk?” He asked, not knowing what else to say. Amelia shook her head, closing her eyes and letting out a long shaky exhale. Link sighed, dropping his hand into her hair and massaging her scalp gently.

“Feels good,” she mumbled, her hands travelling over her stomach. She wanted to pray to god that they were both okay but she was trying to push every thought that entered her mind away. She knew about the syndrome enough to know that if one had died the other one would follow quickly, their little blood supply completely interconnected. She glanced up to find Link’s eyes teary, so deep in thought that it seemed like he was a million miles away. “Do you understand what’s going on now?” She found herself asking but in no way wanted to explain it to him.

“My mom was pregnant with twins,” Link’s voice was soft, “After me. Something went wrong.” His brow was furrowed, as if he was trying to remember the event that had happened years ago.

“Oh,” Amelia replied. “I’m sorry.”

“I was too young to really remember.” Link shook his head. “Is this genetic? Is this my fault?” He looked at her in a way that made it evident that he had begun to blame the entire situation on himself.

“No,” she forced out quickly. “It’s not genetic.” She waited until he relaxed. “It’s not your fault. It's not either of our faults.” That thought had been running through her head since they’d found out the news and she was still trying to convince herself it was true. Link relaxed beside her and pressed his palms into his face. He didn’t like when she saw him cry, she knew that well enough. They stayed that way for what felt like hours, both trying to hold back tears by holding each other instead. Every flutter inside her gave her hope that they were doing okay and every so often she’d press Link’s hand to her abdomen, hoping that he could feel them too.

Addison, still buzzing from the three iced coffees and adrenaline of practically rolling out of bed on her day off and catching a plane to Seattle, entered the examination room breathlessly. Link was cradling Amelia’s small frame in his arms, whispering something inaudible to her into her hair. It was the type of exchange that physically hurt to watch and she felt frozen in time for a millisecond.

“Hi,” she found herself saying from the doorway. Amelia lifted her head in response and wiped her red, irritated eyes on Link’s scrub top. “I’m so sorry.” Amelia shrugged, Addison could tell she wanted to make some inappropriate and emotionless joke but couldn’t piece anything together.

“Here we go again.” Was all she could manage to say, in a tone that made Addison want to cry herself. Link allowed her enough space to pull Amelia into a hug.

“We should do an ultrasound now. Carina hasn’t filled me in yet. Can you--”

“Last time we checked they were still doing okay,” Amelia interrupted. “Or were still alive, I guess I should say. The donor twin, she’s the girl, her heartbeat was slowing down. The boy's was still beating strong last we checked.”

“Okay,” Addison muttered, picking up the familiar instrument and spreading gel over Amelia’s stomach. “So I don’t have to give you the speech on how the procedure, if done right, should be successful for the recipient twin? We can hope that the girl will survive but the odds are less.” Amelia nodded.

“I remember from when you assisted on the one at St. Ambrose. I think I was living with you at the time. You talked about it at dinner. It was a miracle they both survived.”

“You and your insane memory.” Addison smiled, cupping her shoulder and giving it a light squeeze for support. Amelia held her breath as the machine whirled to life. Addison found their boy’s heartbeat easily before focusing on their baby girl. Amelia glanced up at Link with teary eyes, not wanting to watch as Addison moved the instrument around expertly. Finally the sound of a slow thunder echoed through the room and the pairs entire bodies relaxed a little. “We need to get in there now,” Addison sighed. “No need to book an O.R. and waste time, it’s very minimally invasive. The first one I watched was performed in a practice.” She motioned to one of the nurses, who was waiting outside, to enter the room. “Let’s sterilize the room as best we can. Get Carina in here, she should observe and I need all the equipment now.” The nurse nodded quickly before going to complete Addison’s orders. “I’m going to inject the aesthetic, you’ll feel a little pinch.”

“Relax, babe,” Link said softly, placing a hand on Amelia’s tensed shoulders as Addison snapped a pair of gloves on and picked up the needle.

“Alright, one, two, three,” she muttered quickly as she swiftly inserted the needle and placed a small piece of gauze over the injection site. Amelia winced as the long needle entered her stomach and looked away. Carina appeared in the doorway with the nurse and handed Addison three long instruments. “Alright, Amelia, just look up at the screen for me okay? We’re going to see your babies in just a second.”

“Can you count down again?” The neurosurgeon asked, knowing that Addison was trying to distract her from the large rod she was about to stab into her abdomen.

“You should barely feel it with the anesthetic...but of course,” Addison responded. “Just look at the screen, okay?” She glanced at Link who was looking queasy despite his speciality being one of the goriest. “One, two, three,” she stabbed the sharp end of the rod into the side of Amelia’s baby bump before pushing it in gently and sliding the scope inside. “You see his hand?” Amelia nodded, mesmerized by the image of the screen.

“This is always my favourite part,” Carina interjected. “Seeing the little ones in utero. So peaceful.” Link nodded with his eyes, alike Amelia’s, focused intensely on the screen.

“So now we just have to decipher which blood vessels belong to which baby,” Addison announced, guiding the scope down below their son.

“Can we see her?” Amelia asked.

“Of course,” Addison glanced up at her sister and could tell she was trying to catch a glimpse of the second baby. “You can get a look at her before we pull it out.” Addison and Carina’s voices were hushed as they turned the screen towards each other, deciding which blood vessel belonged to which and not wanting any input from the worried parents. Addison took a deep breath and allowed time to slow. She tried to block out the fact that this wasn’t just any worried mother but it was the person she’d already delivered awful news to once before. After nodding a final time to Carina, she started the laser.
