drafting/prototype - used up the last of my white eva foam from my monkie kid dragon sword project. glad that i made a practice one first; too many fiddly cuts in the first version. simplified the design and swapped to black eva for the final

i got a heat gun and ohhh i noticed right away how much easier it made shaping the foam (vs my hair dryer, lol). being able to heat-seal the foam properly also reduced how many coats of plasti dip and paint were needed to finish.

painted the bit with brass leafing paint and added velcro between the overlap to make them removable.

for the shirt, i altered two large t-shirts (two so i'd have enough fabric; a cost-saving but not a time-saving shortcut) - added a standing collar, an invisible zipper down the front, darts on the back, and the crennelated motif to the bottom edge.

Design Deep Dive: Mini-Witch Hat Fascinator

The "Design Deep Dive" miniseries explores some of the ideas and inspirations behind my different hat designs. This week I will be looking into one of my newest designs, the Witch Hat Fascinator. It has all the same wrinkles and curls you would come to expect from one of my hats, but on a smaller scale.

I'm definitely not a fashion expert, but the way I understand  the whole idea of fascinators is that they are supposed to be a decorative alternative to a full-sized hat. People wear them when a hat would also make sense, but they are more like a fashion accessory than something functional, like something between a smaller hat and an oversized hair clip. I first started seeing all kinds of fascinators a few years ago when I was dabbling with steampunk inspired top hats. Lots of steampunk models were wearing these tiny little steamer top hats fastened on with hair pins or bands. They really caught my eye back then because they were a whole new kind of hat design that I could play with, and because they were so cute! Since my hats are decorative anyway, and not really functional, it also made sense to experiment with fascinators. At that time especially I was really looking to try all kinds of hats and not settle on just witch and wizard hats. But that was years ago and I still had a lot to learn. The few times I tried to make my own steampunk hat fascinators back then they came out looking more like fuzzy cups than mini-hats. There was no real interest for steampunk hats anyway, and I eventually I moved on.

But every year or so the idea of making a fascinator hat design would come back up, usually after spending awhile on Pinterest and seeing fascinator hats come up a bunch of times. Last year I took one of my first solid steps towards creating a fascinator witch hat since I first attempted fascinator hats years ago. Right after Halloween I was out at all the stores picking up discounted Halloween decorations, and I happened to come across this mini-felted witch hat. It was obviously machine-felted and mass produced, and I think it was meant for dolls and not necessarily to be put on someone's head like a fascinator, but it was just the right size. I also had an idea to turn it into a miniature hat block that I could use to shape witch hat fascinators. I bought it and took it home and then dunked the whole thing in Plasti-Dip, which is supposed to make it water proof and rubbery, perfect for shaping wet wool. But then the Holiday Season started up and I lost all track of my personal projects. My fascinator hat design would have to wait, and I put the rubber coated hat in my closet with the hope of getting back to it one day.

Finally things started to slow down for me and I was able to catch up with my 2017 orders. As the Summer started up I found that I had some time to experiment again and make hats that I wanted to make, just for fun and just to see what I could do. The results of that work are several one-of-a-kind and experimental hats that you can check out here. But I also pulled that rubberized hat block out of the closet and decided to finally give it a real solid try. Another reason my attention turned back to witch fascinator hats was that I have been getting lots of requests for smaller hats this season, sometimes for children or dolls or other reasons. My fascinator hats are not necessarily designed for children or dolls, but those requests kept the whole concept of mini-hats fresh in my mind. I sat down and began putting together prototypes, trying to figure out just how to create a miniature hat that still looked unique (and similar to the full-sized hats I already make). It took a couple of weeks of attempts before I finally got the design down.

Instead of going with built-in hair clips to hold the hat in place I decided to go with a milliner-grade band. But you can hardly see the band as the pictures show, so I think the whole thing turned out well.

I thought it would be a good idea to explain the equipment I used to create my Hardshine sword.

I used the sword design from the Hardshine Wiki page as a base and sized it using Microsoft Publisher (I googled how long a short blade should be and sized it accordingly).

I then split the design over as many pages as necessary, printed, cut and sticky taped together.

I knew I wanted to use the sigils as part of the design so I simply designed the cross-guard and pommel to accommodate.

I'm damn happy with the results and how the colours look!

This 8-Second 1981 Malibu Beats the High Cost of Racing

Scotty Stites has the high cost of racing beat with this 8-second budget bomber.

Getting involved in the sport of drag racing usually isn’t a wise financial decision. It costs money to build (or buy) the car, and then it’s an endless money pit with maintenance, repairs, and general expenses of racing such as entry fees, fuel, and race track cheeseburgers. But if there was ever a car that perfectly exemplifies budget-friendly drag racing, it’s this 1981 Chevy Malibu owned by 39-year-old Scotty Stites of Ripley, Mississippi. The car is all business, from its satin blue DIY Plasti Dip paint job to its naturally aspirated small-block engine, but the car’s simplicity doesn’t mean it’s slow. In fact, the car runs quicker than the roll cage specifications allow, but the tech guy at his local track doesn’t seem to mind.

Scotty bracket races the car, running in the Super Pro division against tube chassis cars and dragsters. Despite the weight and horsepower disadvantage, the car is consistent and performs well on a regular basis. Scotty also runs in the local 6.0-second eighth-mile index class, which is specifically for door slammers, but the field is typically packed with lightweight, tube-chassis cars. Nothing pleases Scotty more than to put those high dollar cars on the trailer.

Scotty bought the car from a friend who had started the project several years ago. The previous owner had built a new back half, consisting of narrowed rear frame rails, big wheel tubs, and a narrowed rearend. Scotty got a great deal on the car, and started troubleshooting some of its issues. He tracked down a few problems in the driveline, and made quick progress to get the car running better.

The car’s exterior—a non-descript flat blue—came out of a spray can, and is arguably the Malibu’s most memorable feature. “This was just a cheap option,” says Scotty. “I had checked into some vinyl wraps, and a guy was supposed to come wrap it, then he never showed up. We figured out something cheap, and it just worked out, you know, for less than $500 you can do the whole car. It’s just a flat color, there’s no shine to it, but it works.”

While Scotty’s Malibu spends 100 percent of its time on the racetrack running deep into the 5s in the eighth mile (approximately high 8s in the quarter), the bracket machine is not particularly stripped-down for the track. All the lights and accessories work, and the full interior (sans passenger seating) could easily be returned to street duty in a day’s time, should the need arise. “It’s got steel doors and roll-up windows. It’s nothin’ fancy, but it works for me.”

Scotty reports he has only about $15k in the car, and much of that is due to the simple combination under the hood. Keeping the cost of racing down is a 434ci small-block Chevy with conventional 23-degree heads, a 950cfm alcohol carburetor, and 12:1 pistons. “It’s nothin’ exotic. It’s got 20-year-old parts, but it’s a good combination that makes good power.” Running methanol fuel, Scotty reports a best eighth-mile e.t. of 5.53 at 120 mph. “I bought it with this engine, but it didn’t run very well. I changed a bunch of stuff, took weight off here and there, and got it faster and faster just tinkering with it. It’s about maxed out now. To go any faster, we’ll have to spend about $5,000.”

Scotty has a great support system at home, thanks to his wife Sharon and his 16-year-old son Caden, who can often be seen helping out in the shop and at the track. He also received a helping hand from his brother-in-law Jason Hutcheson—not only is Jason his employer (Hutcheson Transmission; Ripley, Mississippi), but he also helps on the race car, so that’s a win-win.

We met Scotty at the Outlaw Street Car Reunion in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he was competing in the 32-car Super Pro Shootout. Scotty made it to the semi-finals on Friday night, before his opponent ran dead on the dial in with a .001 reaction time—an unbeatable run. Scotty would get another chance to race the following day, but rain moved in and cancelled the event all together, so Scotty, Caden, and Jason made the five-hour trip back home. He plans to race as often as his schedule allows, both at his home track Holly Springs Motorsports Park, and at other tracks in the Southeast.

With a background in hot rods and drag cars, Scotty is right at home in the driver’s seat of his wheelstanding G-body. The car has run a best of 5.53 at 120 miles per hour in the eighth-mile, which comes out to 8.60s in the quarter mile if the car was geared differently. Since Scotty’s local tracks are mostly eighth-mile, he has it geared accordingly (4.71:1), so it uses every ounce of horsepower as it goes through the lights. Scotty admits that the car is lighter than it looks, but that it still has all of the original glass in it and plenty of room to shed some more weight if he chooses to take it to the next level. We wouldn’t change a thing because his simple combination offers big time fun on a working man’s budget.

Tech Notes Who: Scotty Stites What: 1981 Chevrolet Malibu Where: Ripley, Mississippi

Engine This conventional small-block Chevy starts with a Dart SHP block machined by Barnes Racing Engines to accept a four-inch stroke. The Eagle 4340 crankshaft is mated with Eagle six-inch H-beam connecting rods, and slings a set of Ross pistons. With a hefty dome on the piston, the final compression ratio is 12.0:1, when combined with the Brodix 10X aluminum cylinder heads. The extensively worked heads were previously used on a sprint car engine, and feature 2.150-inch titanium intake valves and 1.600-inch stainless exhaust valves. The camshaft is a Comp Cams solid-roller with a custom grind, featuring 274 degrees intake and 286 degrees exhaust duration at .050-inch lift, and a max lift of .753-inch on the intake side and .721-inch on the exhaust. Other Comp Cams components include a belt drive, 1.550-inch valve springs, and pushrods. The valve train is finished off with a set of Jesel shaft-mounted rocker arms with a 1.6:1 ratio. Engine electronics are handled by an MSD 7531 box, accompanied by an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, coil, and flying-magnet crank trigger. The car’s exhaust consists of Hedman headers (1.875-inch primary tubes) leading to 3.5-inch pipes and Dynomax bullet mufflers.

Induction Atop the small-block is a Brodix single-plane intake manifold, which features a 4150 flange. The carburetor is a Quick Fuel 950cfm unit, set up for methanol. It draws fuel from a Magnafuel 275 pump.

Transmission Since Scotty spends his days building transmissions, he jumped at the chance to modify the Powerglide in his Malibu. Along with all new hard parts, he installed a BTE valve body with a Pro Brake. The custom eight-inch torque converter stalls to 6,000 rpm on the line. A Wiles Racing aluminum driveshaft handles the shock of the high-rpm launch.

Rearend Out back is a Quick Performance 9-inch rear end. It features an aluminum center section, packed with a 4.71:1 Motive ring and pinion, a spool and Moser 35-spline axles. Scotty’s specialty is reducing mass in the rotating assembly (he’s a transmission expert, after all!), so he got to work relieving the ring gear mass around the attachment points using a Bridgeport machine.

Suspension The previous owner replaced the rear frame rails with 2×3 rectangular tubing, and installed a Competition Engineering ladder bar suspension. Scotty tweaked the suspension to his liking, and has the Viking double-adjustable coilovers dialed in. The front suspension features QA1 R-series coilovers with 250-pound springs. A rack and pinion was added by Laverne Ferrovillat at 5th Avenue Race Cars in Mobile, Alabama. Braking consists of Aerospace Components front discs and Wilwood rear discs.

Wheels & Tires The Malibu rolls on Weld Alumastar front runners, which measure 15×3.5 inches and mount to a set of Mickey Thompson 26×4.5-15 tires. Out back is a set of Billet Specialties 15x12s, mounted to Mickey Thompson 315/60R15 Pro drag radials.

Body/Paint The body on Scotty’s Malibu is mostly stock, aside from the Glasstek four-inch cowl induction hood. Scotty straightened up the body and gave it a satin blue finish using low-cost blue Plasti Dip.

Interior It’s a pretty basic setup inside the Malibu, but it serves the purpose. Scotty says, “Aluminum interior panels and Lexan windows are great for weight savings, but I hate that stuff.” He loves the fact that he can still roll the window down on the return road to get some fresh air during those hot Mississippi summers. Scotty is surrounded by a 12-point mild steel roll cage, and hangs on to a Grant steering wheel and B&M Pro Stick shifter. He’s strapped into a Jegs racing seat, using an RJS cam-lock harness.

What's the most annoying thing you see at every car show?

This post is half venting, and half curiosity. I know a lot of Redittors on here come from all over, and I'd like to know what you spot that ticks you off.

When going to a car show here in the states, there are a few groups of people I tend to spot. There are the people who bring their stock/restored vehicles that they keep very clean. There are people that have their project cars, or in progress cars. There are people with their highly performance oriented modded cars.

However, there is one group of people that drive me up the wall. These people tend to always bring the newest cars, with the most tacky visual upgrades you can think of. Awful airbrushed engine cover jobs, stickers, gaudy accessories, horrible wheels. The part that really pisses me off is when they have a bunch of stupid stuffed animals and toys that match the color of their car. They try to theme it. Oh, you have a white Dodge Dart? Might as well paint the engine cover white, plasti dip the wheels black, and put a bunch of storm trooper action figures around it. Do you own anything blue? Might as well bombard it with Smurf merchandise all over it. Don't forget the airbrush blue flames all over the engine bay. Those type of people drive me nuts.

I know not everyone is the most mechanically inclined. Maybe they're just getting into the hobby, but you'd think, hey, maybe someone will tell them it's tacky as hell to do those kinds of things. Where do they even learn this stuff? Do people circle jerk bad visual mods and stuffed animals on car forums?

Also as a final note, people who put the two stripes on their front fenders can go lick doorknobs. Talk about the most overdone and stupid visual mod you can do to your car. Any downvotes or flak I get, I will automatically assume it's from some two stripers.

Steps on How to Plasti Dip Your Car

Part I – Preparing Your Car

Step 1: Where to Apply the Plasti Dip. Find a place where your car can sit for a while as the plasti dip dries up after each coat, and because it will produce lots of fumes, location is vital. Step 2. Preparing the Car. The next step is to prepare your car. A solid application of the plasti dip will lead to a great looking that will last longer. To achieve a better result, follow the succeeding steps. Step 3. Wash the car. Using soap and water, remove the impurities on the surface of the pain until they are completely gone. The car should be washed several times to make sure that there is nothing on the surface of the paint when the Plasti dip is applied. Step 4. Let the Car dries up Completely. This is very essential. Your car should be dried thoroughly before applying the plasti dip. Make sure there is no moisture on the vehicle surface. Wipe the car surface with dry towels several times before spraying the plasti dip. Step 5. Protect the windows. Cover the windows with newspapers as well as other areas that you do not wish to apply. Once the plasti dip dries up, you can apply lights and emblems.

  Part 2 – Applying the Plasti Dip

Step 1. Put on the Proper Attire. Wear your protected gears mask, gloves, coveralls, and goggles. Make sure you have some water near you to wash off anything that might spill on you.

Step 2. Use your Plasti Dip. For best result, we recommend that you use a professional spray gun when applying the plasti dip. It will provide a more consistent finish.

If you are using cans, you need to shake them first for at least a minute to make sure that the color is evenly mixed. For gallon-size containers, you need to stir it for a minute to achieve an even tone before using it.

Step 3. Planning how to paint. You can apply 4-5 layers of Plasti Dip for a smoother consistent coating of the paint. If you apply a thicker coat, it will be much easier to peel off if you want to. Step 4. Determine where to Apply the Plasti Dip. Decide where you will use the dip. Lights and emblems can peel off the Plasti Dip easily, place a tape on the tires and rubber trim, so it will not get on them.

You can remove or spray the grilles and trim in place. Just make sure that you protect it before spraying. Step 5. Plasti dip the wheels. Remove the wheels and should be washed and dried before applying the dip.

Step 6. Apply the paint. The distance between the spray or can is six inches away from the part of the vehicle when painting. Spray back and forth continuously. Avoid pausing at any spot.

The first coating is known as the bonding coat. Allow each coat to dries up for around 20 – 30 minutes before you apply the next coating. The best way to paint the whole car is to work on it in sections, switch between parts to let the freshly-painted ones to dry as you work on the other parts that are already dry.

When applying the Plasti Dip consistency is important and make sure to coat it smoothly and patiently because you cannot correct mistakes. After the application, you can now remove the paper and tape. Use a razor blade on parts where you use tape to cover it. For parts that look too thin, apply another coating within 30 minutes.

Step 7. Let it Stand. It is best that you let the car sit for 4 hours to let the Plasti Dip cure thoroughly. Make sure that you keep the debris or moisture away from the car during this step.

Step 8. Pulling the Edge. After drying it thoroughly, find the edge of the plasti dip and lift it up carefully. You can remove the entire patch easily once a part of it comes off. Now you can change the color of your car whenever you feel like changing it.
