Plantain (Plantago species)
There are over 200 species of Plantain within the genus Plantago (which are species of flowering plant in the plantain family Plantaginaceae). Plantago major (pictured above), the broadleaf plantain, white man's footprint, waybread, or greater plantain, . Plantago lanceolata is known by the common names ribwort plantain, narrowleaf plantain (narrow leaf plantain), English plantain, ribleaf, lamb's tongue, and buckhorn.
Plantains' are a common "weed" on cultivated or disturbed land; narrow and broadleaf are often found in the same places. Two of the most common species, broadleaf plantain (P. major) and ribwort plantain (P. lanceolata), have followed human migration from Europe and Asia and are now naturalized in most temperate and subtropical regions of the world.
Plantains are a highly nutritious wild edible, that is high in calcium and vitamins A, C, and K. The young, tender leaves can be eaten raw, and the older, stringier leaves can be boiled in stews and eaten (as a "potherb"). The seeds are also edible (but ingesting large quantities can cause a drop in blood pressure). The leaves of narrow plantain are more bitter than broad leaf (pictured here). The ‘bud’ on the flower stem tastes surprisingly like mushrooms.
Plantain has powerful properties for wound healing. It has the perfect amount of allantoin, which helps cellular proliferation in our tissues (but does not have too much, so it won't make it heal too fast). It is astringent and will help tighten the wound, and pull infection and splinters out of the skin. It can be used as a leaf extract or even a spit poultice (chewed thoroughly). It helps with itching, histamine reactions, insect bites, snake bites, and any topical issue. Leaves in poultice used for sores, rashes, blisters, swellings, and insect stings. The plant was once used for malaria and epilepsy.
The allantoin, the constituent that promotes tissue regeneration, is also found in Comfrey (Symphytum spp.)—but plantain is much milder and can be used to help resolve all types of minor superficial wounds without comfrey's safety concerns.
Plantain has anti-infectious and antiviral properties against the herpes virus. Studies have shown the antibacterial properties of plantain on Staphylococcus aureus and, among others, on Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Plantago asiatica (Chinese Plantain) extract also significantly reduced Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) replication and RSV-mediated syncytial formation in the Human epithelial type 2 cell line in a dose-dependent manner.
Plantain can help with poor digestion by stimulating your liver and assists the liver in getting toxins out of your body. The anti-inflammatory and demulcent properties of plantain make it very soothing for your digestive tract. The seeds of any plantain may lower cholesterol when ingested.
Tea brewed from leaves is used to treat coughs and bronchitis. Plantain treatments are also used traditionally for diarrhea, dysentery, and bloody urine.
Psyllium is the husk of plantain seeds (also considered plantain seed coat) (a type of fiber often used as a natural laxative since it absorbs water as it moves through your digestive tract). Psyllium is a soluble fiber used primarily as a gentle bulk-forming laxative in products such as Metamucil. Psyllium can help relieve both constipation and diarrhea, and is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and other intestinal problems. Psyllium has also been used to help regulate blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

hey do yall want a fun plant fact??
This plant, right? Greater Plantain, scientific name Plantago major?
It's known as "white man's footprint", and the reason is so cool 2 me (Taken from the Wikipedia page for Plantago major):
The plant is native to most of Europe and northern and central Asia,[9][8][2] but has widely naturalised elsewhere in the world.[9][10][11][12][13] Plantago major grows in lawns and fields, along roadsides, and in other areas that have been disturbed by humans. It does particularly well in compacted or disturbed soils. It is believed to be one of the first plants to reach North America after European colonisation. Reportedly brought to the Americas by Puritan colonizers, plantain was known among some Native American peoples by the common name "white man's footprint", because it thrived in the disturbed and damaged ecosystems surrounding European settlements.[14] The ability of plantain to survive frequent trampling and colonize compacted soils makes it important for soil rehabilitation. Its roots break up hardpan surfaces, while simultaneously holding together the soil to prevent erosion.[15] The seeds of plantain are a common contaminant in cereal grain and other crop seeds. As a result, it now has a worldwide distribution.[10]
anyways download iNaturalist and the Seek app if yall like this kind of stuff i am having the time of my life identifying random plants!! i <3 collecting weird little facts about nature it's so fascinating!!
#i love ecology.... foaming at the mouth at how cool it is to just be able to learn about these things on the interwebs#holy shit#inaturalist#biodiversity#invasive species#environment#citizen science

Dandelions, clover, deadnettle, plantain (plantago), could hardly be called invasive plants.
For context my Job is working removing invasive species. We rarely if ever target these plants.
All of these plants are lawn plants. They thrive in disturbed and compacted soil. And in a healthy meadow you are unlikely to find these guys.
Plantain was actually also called 'white mans foot' because it would show up where settlers would disturb the soil for farming and building.
These plants are an indication that your lawn soil is terrible and needs some serious remediation.
And yes, if you try to establish a native meadow or garden these guys will make it hard to do. But thats because the soil is terrible.
Get some native nitrogen fixers (many nitrogen fixers are in the Pea family) and find some native plants that are listed as drought tolerant. (If your lawn is wetter then thats a different conversation, but i think majority of lawns are pretty dry).
Best method is to put a big tarp over your lawn to starve out the weeds and the grass. Its gonna take a while to sun starve stuff, so patience is key. When its all dead then you can finally spread seeds or plant shrubs.
Since I posted the anti-lawn memes, I've been reading lots of responses in the notes and thinking about something recurring in them:
letting your yard "go wild" or just not maintaining an area= automatically good
Leaving an area entirely unmaintained is probably better than putting pesticides and herbicides on a monoculture of grass. However, an unmaintained field of grass in most areas still has a big problem:
invasive plants
The people who say in the notes that they're letting their grass grow wild are all mentioning mostly the same list of weeds and flowers that grow in its place:
white clover
deadnettle
dandelions
dog violets...
The sameness is a red flag in itself. Wild plants are incredibly diverse. There are probably hundreds of species in your area.
But also, those plants in the list are native to Europe. Which means they have the potential to be invasive elsewhere.
Non native does not mean universally bad, of course. Clover feeds bees and pollinators and it puts nitrogen back into the dirt. A lawn mixed with clover is better than a lawn that's just grass. Dandelions will also feed pollinators and they prefer areas that are extremely hostile to most plant life. They don't devour whole areas and choke out other plants in my experience, they're just tough as hell. And they're edible for humans.
But the first plants that grow up after you stop maintaining an area are often invasive. They're specialized to take over disturbed areas faster than the others, and they're the tough motherfuckers that can survive being mowed over while native plants often can't.
That means it's important to
selectively weed to give the other plants a chance
This is the tier above "stop mowing the grass," it's helping the area along a little in healing itself. I have been doing this to my own patch of ground all spring and have learned the following:
You don't actually have to plant new stuff to get a greater variety of plants. There are lots of seeds and sprouts already there...
...underneath the mat of invasive plants
Just thinning out the invasives helps. In our back yard, I ripped up most of a thick mat of wintercreeper that was choking out all but a couple canes of blackberry bushes. And not only did the blackberries start to flourish, but other stuff started to spring up. Plants that had already been there, but had been starving in the darkness underneath the invasive vines.
After that I started weeding out anything that seemed to be taking over too much. It allowed the slower-growing plants to catch up.
I'm not an expert and this isn't super scientific, but this is what I've figured out.
Basically, a place that used to be a lawn will probably be taken over by invasive plants first...because invasives take over quick and they smother and choke other plants. It's what they do.
So to get a lot of variety, you've got to rip up and cut back some of those fast-growing nasties so the more patient guys can catch up.

What type of herbicide will get rid of Narrowleaf plantain?
Did you know that Narrowleaf plantain, a common weed found in lawns and gardens, can produce up to 20,000 seeds per plant, making it one of the most prolific weed species in the world? This staggering statistic highlights the importance of understanding and managing this invasive plant, which can quickly outcompete desirable vegetation and reduce the overall aesthetic value of a landscape.
Narrowleaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is a perennial weed that thrives in a wide range of environments, from full sun to partial shade, and in various soil types. It is characterized by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves and tall, slender stems that can grow up to 12 inches in height. The plant produces small, brown flowers in the summer months, which eventually give way to seeds that can be dispersed by wind, water, or animal activity.
One of the most significant challenges associated with Narrowleaf plantain is its ability to form dense mats of vegetation, which can choke out desirable plants and create an unsightly appearance. Additionally, the plant's deep taproot makes it difficult to eradicate, as it can regrow from even small fragments of root left behind.
When it comes to growth control or eradication of Narrowleaf plantain, there are several strategies that can be employed. Celsius WG is a popular herbicide that has been shown to be effective in controlling Narrowleaf plantain, particularly when used in combination with cultural practices such as proper mowing, watering, and fertilization.
-> Get **Celsius WG** For Warm Season Turf Herbicide here.
It is essential to note that Celsius WG should be used according to the label instructions and in conjunction with other management practices to achieve optimal results.
In addition to herbicide use, other methods for controlling Narrowleaf plantain include hand-pulling, mowing, and solarization. Hand-pulling can be an effective method for small infestations, but it can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. Mowing can help to reduce the plant's seed production, but it may not completely eliminate the problem. Solarization, which involves trapping the sun's heat under a clear plastic tarp, can be an effective method for killing Narrowleaf plantain seeds and preventing germination.
To prevent Narrowleaf plantain from becoming a problem in the first place, it is essential to maintain a healthy, dense lawn through proper mowing, watering, and fertilization practices. This can help to create an environment that is less conducive to weed growth and reduce the need for herbicides like Celsius WG.
In conclusion, Narrowleaf plantain is a highly invasive and prolific weed species that can have significant impacts on lawns and gardens. By understanding the plant's growth habits and using a combination of cultural practices and herbicides like Celsius WG, it is possible to effectively manage and control Narrowleaf plantain, creating a more desirable and sustainable landscape.
