I watched Barbie and Oppenheimer and they were just...okay. :/ I think I already talked about Barbie a bit. Tl;dr: it was aesthetically pleasing, but pacing and writing were horrific, Barbie's arc was all over the place and expected, and it was really dated and tried to do like three different things that didn't end up doing any of those three things well).

With regard to Oppenheimer, I didn't hate it, but I feel like it, more than any of his movies I've seen (and enjoyed or was neutral about), highlighted Christopher Nolan's limitations and inexperience with certain things.

It felt like it was two movies squeezed into one unsuccessfully, and I'd rather it have picked one. I actually think it might've been better as a limited series, but they would have never made one for lots of reasons. The pacing and editing were odd, distracting, and confusing and same goes for some cinematographic choices; the narrative choices were sooooo rudimentary to the point of being a bit childish (omg please...I wanted to take a red pen and start slashing away at the script and writing notes); and I don't know if it was just my theater, but the sound was awful. This isn't unique to Oppenheimer as we've all been aware of for several years now, but I was straining to hear a lot of the dialogue and when there was loud music, it was virtually inaudible.

The star-studded cast prevented me from immersing myself in the movie too because it screamed "BIG STUDIO MOVIE BY BIG DIRECTOR ABOUT BIG PROJECT EVERYONE IS DYING TO BE IN!" It became a game of "who's who" for me at some point. We could've gotten away with casting newbies, guys, especially for the bit roles.

And some of the actors didn't impress me; Florence and Robert were okay which is disappointing because I'm very fond of them. I'm not sure why everyone was raving that this is a RDJ Oscar nom; tbh, I thought he slipped into his usual mannerisms and RDJ-ness in the second half/last third of the movie. Still good of course because he knows how to act, but it felt like he was treading familiar territory for me despite the very different character he's playing. But he's also such a unique actor and person that it's hard to ignore all the things that make him him; it can be hard for me to forget he's RDJ. :/ Still excited that he's taking on projects like this and The Sympathizer!

But I guess...the reason why I didn't hate it was because I at least like the fact that Nolan's trying something new and I'm giving him some grace because of that? And there are still things he does that I like and the talent is there. AND OF COURSE Cillian. He made the movie. I understand wanting to put your blorbo in everything you do (this is like Bong Joonho and Song Kangho for me lakdfjsa), and what a great blorbo to have. He was SO SO SO good and I forgot how much I love watching him act and how much I missed seeing him. Everything he did was *chef's kiss *mwah.

Okay so... Jade and Azul swap bodies BUT Azul and Riddle are together

That goes so crazy imo

Like first of all the differences in their bodies... Azul has TWO SETS OF JAWS NOW??? and why are Jade's limbs moving on their own? This is insane!

"Azul," Jade said from this new yet all too familiar body of his, looking at his hands in incredulity. "Why exactly are my hands moving?"

His own eyes - so similar and yet so different - stared back at him.

"They have their own brains even on land," Azul said, face puckered up as he contorted his mouth awkwardly. "And you still have your pharyngeal jaw, it seems?"

This was going to be a pain, it seemed.

And then... The perception difference! Actually crazy for both of them.

"Oh, what're you gonna do after class, Azul?" A boy said. He was scared of Jade, if memory served right. Then he must've been scared of Azul as well.

Perhaps Jade would have some fun with him.

"Oh, I'd rather not say," he said. "It would certainly be... Disconcerting for you."

Perfectly frightening in its implication, and yet, the boy merely laughed.

"So you're embarrassed about it?" The boy said. "Man, I never thought you'd have a cute side like this."

Jade's eyes widened.

"P-Pardon?"

"You're stuttering, too?" The boy said like this was some overwhelm of cuteness. Jade couldn't help but be confused.

Was everything Azul did unexpectedly adorable to these people?

Meanwhile Azul in Jade's body breathes and people are like "AHHHH I'M TERRIFIED SATAN IS COMING FOR MEEEE"

Anyways on top of all this, there's Riddle and Jade isn't a boyfriend stealer so he doesn't kiss Riddle or let Riddle kiss him... Riddle is confused and mildly hurt and Jade just stares into his soul like "you shall understand in time" like some prophecy maker or smth

Anyways for the sake of the plot the curse that got cast on them implies that something bad happens if Azul or Jade tell anyone what happens

. Soooo Riddle is confused because anyone would be but then "Jade" aka Azul starts talking to him weird in class and he's like 'this is suspicious as fuck I'm going to investigate'

And then meanwhile jade is getting used to this and decides to have some fun at Azul's expense :)

"Oh, Riddle!" Azul said. "Have I ever told you of my love for karaage?"

Azul's favorite food was fried chicken? How peculiar.

"Is it, now? How unexpected," Riddle said. For some odd reason, Jade glowered at Azul.

"Pay no attention to those odd rambles," Jade said. Regardless, we really ought to-"

"You know, as a child, I used to hide in this little octopus pot! I still do now, on occasion."

Why was Azul telling him this? Was the mer not a rather secretive individual?

By now, Jade looked ready to combust. It was an odd expression.

Still, vulnerability was rare from Azul. Riddle would take advantage of it while it lasted.

"You did?" Riddle asked. "May I inquire as to why?"

"Oh, I was a rather shy child," Azul said. "Speaking of my childhood, perhaps I could show you a few photos-"

At that, Jade snapped.

"You will do no such thing!"

Anyways it's shortly after this interaction that Riddle puts two and two together and is like "yeah they swapped bodies Azul would never say that"

Time passes and they swap back... Sadly Riddle and Azul both get K.O.'d from embarrassment Azul at the shit Jade said in his body and Riddle at his own clinginess

Anyways final thing because I will never be able to resist bringing the ocs into this... Ramicruz bodyswap... How would that go :3

Don't forget that Azul has to get used to the fact that his (Jade’s) hands are totally stationary. I've already talked about him psyching himself out with the jaw but it's so funny that he feels SOMETHING foreign but it's not his silly smart tentacles, and he expects them to move and react with/alongside him only for them to stay stationary what's wrong?? then he accidentally finds the way to use the extra jaw and he does not like it... it's like manually breathing he's ALWAYS aware of it.

As for Jade...

He was aware Azul’s limbs had personal autonomy, so to speak– they would write on their own, fetched food when it was nearby and, on the rare occasion, hit things out of frustration, but this reaction wasn't any of the sort.

His hands... we're *spazzing out*– flexing so hard it hurt and jerking unnaturally– and while he was also aware that Azul's nervous system was a particularly sensitive one, he was not prepared for the immediate tears that sprung in the corner of his eyes when he failed to make them cease.

"Hm... Azul. Your hands are moving outside of my control."

However funny it was to hear Azul's voice wobble unsteadily like it just did, knowing it was himself... left things to be desired.

A different pair of hands grabs the ones he's holding out and gives them a tight *squeeze*, significantly lessening the severity of the outburst.

"You're panicking so *they're* panicking, you buffoon!"

Jade Leech had never sounded so infuriated.

"This is the first time I hear you talk about your limbs as if they were individuals."

Azul– wearing his face– turns a vicious shade of pink that does not look good on him. He attempts to push his glasses up his nose, only to nearly poke his eyes out, diverting them towards the floor. "I– I only talk to Mama and Grandmother about them, since they're– they're more experienced, all right? This is an occasion where speaking about them is essential, so I must beg you... do not bring this up at a later date. Ever."

Jade places a hand over his heart, only to immediately correct the angle, realizing it was not 'Azul' like enough. That, and the hand was still somewhat intent on disobeying.

any body Azul switches to is a MAJOR ass power trip bruh first Riddle now Jade. They're all terrified when he does something it's so good. he goes "Heh, heh, heh..." and the lounge all feel chills going down his spine SATAN LEECH. The only thing he dislikes is that he has to take a disgustingly *passive* approach to things. He's only now realized how often he gesticulates in conversation, posing as Jade.

For Jade, it's no big deal really. he's observed Azul and all his behaviors since middle school. acting out said behaviors should he nooo big deal... he has some bumps along the road, but thankfully, nothing that can't be excused. He is, after all, Azul Ashengrotto, and everyone knows they can get their lives ruined by Azul.

Their biggest shared hurdle being... Riddle. Azul is dating Riddle, so there's expected affection between the two of them, but Azul is in Jade's body, so he's learning WITH Riddle all day. They pick up where they left off in class and 'Jade' uses a formula that he hasn't been using up to now... when asked he's like "I observed Azul tutoring a couple of underclassmen... truly benevolent, isn't he?" Azul's ass has to fight the urge to yap all damn day he wants to talk to his boyfriend so bad to himself GODAMMIT.

ugh Riddle... Jade will totally sabotage Azul with information...

"Thank you for meeting me here."

Riddle crosses his arms, observing the mushroom patch that he was invited to this late at night. "It's no issue. It's not curfew, after all–"

Azul holds a small envelope in front of him, smile... odd. He can't seem to put his finger on it just yet, but he has no reason to suspect that whatever is being handed ot him is against the rules...

"I hope what you find in this envelope with encourage your heart to forgive me for your transgressions."

Gently, he takes it, already moving to break the seal.

"I'd advise you not open it until you make it to your dormitory. It's rather sensitive information, and I'm... embarrassed."

Riddle raises a brow. Azul does not look the least bit embarrassed, he looks *giddy*, in fact– but his curiosity only grows. He nods, and Azul moves slowly– another thing that's odd, usually, when he complied with a request of his, he'd smile, or clasp his hands together with a definitive *clap*, or–

He huffs. "Alright. Good night, Azul."

"Goodnight, Riddle."

With his back turned, he pouts. Not 'dearest'? Not any other nickname?

At his bedroom, he's nearly forgotten about the envelope. He's not even sure if he *wants* to open it, but ultimately, he decides to move his letter opener across the seal.

Multiple papers flutter out, and he gasps, crouching to pick them up at once. Turning the first one around, he finds himself unexpectedly face-to-face with... a picture. A boy with gray skin and wide, watery eyes, eyes so strikingly ice-blue and pale hair fixed the best it could on an environment where it floated– they were pictures of Azul as a boy. School photos, class photos, a candid where he peeked from a kitchen counter...

Riddle can't help it– it's cute! Perhaps he *could* forget about today's events...

Meanwhile, back at Octavinelle, 'Azul' smiles. It was a small price to pay, giving away some of his collection of scavenged childhood photos– but an ultimately worthwhile one.

Ramicruz body swap everything is way to sensitive for Cruz and suddenly he's very very eepy. His first course of action is to further care for Rami's skin and hair without him squirming. The feathers are alarming, and he didn't know he has THAT many... they're not just in his hair...

In Rami's case in Cruz's body... everything feels like it's been dulled. He doesn't see the big deal about the one curl in his face, though. He's totally human and weaker and it's crazy...

A/n: Hopefully this is okay. I feel like I can’t make a Josh fic without some sort of angst. Sorry it's super short. I have a lot of class assignments due this week so my focus is on that rn. Off topic but I'm thinking about making a Mr.Robot fic. Im back in my Rami Malek era.

“You are receiving a call from Ocean View Hospital. Would you like to accept?” 

“Yes.”

The line was then connected. 

“Hey sweetheart. How are you?” You could hear his sly look through the phone. 

You leaned against the wall fiddling with the hem of your shirt. 

“I’m good. How about yourself?” You missed hearing his voice. 

“I’m good now.” 

“Oh are you really?” 

“Yeah. I’m just glad I get to hear you talk. It’s a good distraction from all this.” 

“I’m glad I can distract you for a bit.” 

You had been friends with Josh since you both were little. You had always known something was a bit different with him. But it wasn’t until you both started dating that you had fully known the extent of his condition. Josh would wake up during the night screaming, he’d have a hard time recognizing you at times.

“So my birthday’s coming up.”

“It is, isn't it.” 

“Do you think you’ll finally be out by then?”

“I’m not too sure babe. But if I’m doing better by then you'll be the first to know.” 

You felt slightly disappointed but you knew he was in there to get the help he needed. 

That was 3 weeks ago. 

You hadn’t heard from Josh since that last phone call. He hadn’t been returning your letters or phone calls. You had begun to assume the worst. What if he didn’t want to talk to you anymore? Or what if he regressed? What if his meds stopped working. Even when you asked Hannah and Beth they hadn’t been able to contact him either. 

All you could think about was the day you found him. You could still see it. He was passed out on the floor. He was unresponsive for a good minute before you had to throw cold water on him. He was sobbing, saying how he wasn’t good enough for you. Saying that he didn’t deserve you. But those sobs quickly turned to anger, not at you but to whatever was talking around him. He swatted trying to get the voices away from him. But what really did it for him was when he accidentally hit you. The guilt that he felt, he didn’t mean it. He wasn’t aiming for you. He couldn’t even see you with his delusions tormenting him. That was what really made him commit himself. 

Hannah knew how upset you were but she thought it would be a good idea to take you to the cabin for your birthday. You had always said it was your favorite place to go. 

You and Hannah were already making your way to the cable cart, “Didn’t you say Beth was going to meet us here?” 

Hanna turned slightly to you, “Yeah, she got cold and just texted me that she was going to go ahead to the cabin.”

You nodded. After the walking you could finally see the cabin in sight. It was just as beautiful as you remembered it. Hannah held the door open for you as you walked in first. You felt your body jolt from the yelling. 

“Surprise!” Little poppers and kazoos echoed through the room. 

“Aw you guys.” You felt your eyes tear up a bit. From the excitement but also from the disappointment. Out of all the faces there, the one you wanted the most wasn’t there. 

You let out a surprised scream feeling someone picking you up from behind. As soon as you were set back down you saw who it was. 

Until you felt someone pick you up from behind 

It was him. 

“What did you think I forgot?”

You felt the tears run down your face. You nodded slightly.

"Now why would I forget about you."

You hugged him tightly, feeling his arms wrap around you.

“When did they let you out?”

“About three days ago.”

“Why didn't you tell me”

“I wanted to surprise you. I'm sorry”

“No, I'm just so happy. I’m so glad you’re here.”

“I promise I won’t miss another one.”

He wiped your tears, “I missed you so much. I’m sorry. I’ll do better. I promise.”

Murderbot Holding Hands

(Minor spoilers alert for Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy pls check the tags)

First real post because I’m shy. Don’t know why it’s going to be a hyper-specific murderbot meta but here we go:

I’ve been rereading all the books after finishing System Collapse <3 and I want to talk about a small moment in Artificial Condition that I’d never noticed before. It’s near the end of the book when Tapan is in ART’s medsystem after nearly dying, and SecUnit says that when Tapan wakes up it’s holding her hand.

When Tapan woke, I was sitting on the MedSystem’s platform holding her hand. (Artificial Condition, p. 155 in my ebook)

I thought it was a really sweet moment, but it also kind of puzzled me because of SecUnit’s aversion to touch. Later when I was reading Exit Strategy, I noticed a similar moment when SecUnit holds hands with Mensah to help disguise them as they’re trying to escape TranRollinHyfa.

[Mensah] took a deep breath and looked up at me. “We can look calm. We’re good at that.” Yeah, we were. I did a quick review to make sure I was running all my not-a-SecUnit code, then I thought of one more thing I could do. As we stepped out of the pod, I took Mensah’s hand. (Exit Strategy, p. 87)

Reading these scenes felt different in a couple ways. In my opinion, SecUnit taking Mensah’s hand in Exit Strategy seemed like more of a big deal because it was a part of SecUnit’s reunion with Mensah, and we see its thoughts and emotions leading up to it. And it tracks that SecUnit might feel ok holding Mensah’s hand in that situation because of their close friendship. But the moment in Artificial Condition is more mysterious. We don’t get any of SecUnit’s internal monologue at the beginning because the scene opens when Tapan wakes up. And even though it’s clear in the book that SecUnit likes Tapan along with Rami and Maro, I wouldn’t say their relationship is anywhere near as close as its bond with Mensah. So why did it hold her hand?

I think it’s a neat moment that’s fun to ponder! And I have some vague ideas I’d like to share about it. (Some of this is based on the books and some is my speculation as an ace/aspec person dealing with touch aversion.) (Also none of these thoughts are mutually exclusive!)

Maybe SecUnit saw holding Tapan’s hand as a form of first aid after her traumatic experience and didn’t want her to panic waking up in a strange ship’s medsystem. This fits with SecUnit bracing itself to hug Mensah in Exit Strategy. (The memes of this moment are perfect lol)

But I was the only one here, so I braced myself and made the ultimate sacrifice. “Uh, you can hug me if you need to.” She started to laugh, then her face did something complicated and she hugged me. I upped the temperature in my chest and told myself it was like first aid. (Exit Strategy, pp. 82-3)

But I feel like SecUnit might not care as much about comforting Tapan in a similar way if it hadn’t already built up some kind of trust with her? Which brings me to Thought 2:

I think SecUnit might have felt safe holding Tapan’s hand because of the moment in Artificial Condition in the second transient hostel when Tapan laid down next to it. (Ofc I think rescuing Tapan from Tlacey’s ship was also a factor, trauma-bonding and all. But to me this moment in the hostel is more important.)

Thirty-two minutes later, I heard movement. I thought Tapan was getting up to go to the restroom facility, but then she settled on the pad behind me, not quite touching my back… I had never had a human touch me, or almost touch me, like this before and it was deeply, deeply weird. (Artificial Condition, pp. 136-7)

This is one of my favorite sequences in Artificial Condition (which is also my favorite book in the series because of ART! And because I find it quiet, reflective, and weirdly cozy even though objectively few cozy things happen now that I think about it). The scene is pretty mundane with a lot of fun bits like SecUnit pretending to need to use the restroom, be on a diet, etc. And we usually don’t get to see SecUnit hanging out with only one person. So it gives room for some small, but important feelings that I don’t think SecUnit has time to explore when it’s busy saving the day. Like how it feels about physical contact with humans.

(idk it reminds me of how like in ghibli films there’s usually at least one scene with the characters eating a meal or something because it sort of grounds everything else. I just like it!)

Tapan being close to SecUnit seems to throw if off-guard, but the context of the scene feels non-threatening and pretty mellow. So I think this gives SecUnit the opportunity to check-in with itself about this new experience. It still feels weird about it, but not in a scary or upsetting way. I think it’s almost this mutual vulnerability (Tapan feeling vulnerable and seeking comfort and SecUnit feeling vulnerable about her closeness and its own boundaries) that creates a bond between them, and that’s why SecUnit reaches out to Tapan to comfort her when she wakes up onboard ART.

That scene has become really special to me. And I would argue that it’s an important moment to SecUnit too because it brings it up again in Exit Strategy, along with a later moment in Rogue Protocol, thinking about times when it’s experienced physical contact with humans in a non-traumatizing way.

Except it wasn’t entirely awful. It was like when Tapan had slept next to me at the hostel, or when Abene had leaned on me after I saved her; strange, but not as horrific as I would have thought. (Exit Strategy, p. 83)

These moments seem to lead up to SecUnit offering to comfort Mensah later on because it’s reached a point where it feels willing to do so for her sake, even if it doesn’t want to seek out that kind of comfort for itself. And it’s really cool to see SecUnit navigate this throughout the books.

SecUnit starts the series with a strong innate sense that it doesn’t want to be touched by humans, but it’s allowed to refine those feelings in light of its new experiences. It’s boundaries are situational and personal, and even well-meaning humans sometimes struggle to understand them at first. Other times, SecUnit finds it difficult to understand it’s own feelings regarding touch and even changes its mind. But, importantly, the narrative always presents this as valid and worthy of respect.

This is a much more nuanced and realistic portrayal of defining boundaries than I’ve seen in a lot of media- one where it’s a constant and sometimes confusing process of self-discovery.

And these might seem like obvious concepts to some people, but they weren’t for me growing up. I really wish I’d read these books when I was younger, and maybe I would’ve given myself more grace to define my comfort level, grow, and change. But I’m glad that I’m in a place now where I can see and appreciate these things in what’s become one of my favorite series.
