Friendly Reminder that the Vessel Eggs are Freaking Huge.
Also Obligatory Birthplace Egg is the only Egg Asset with Void Vines attached to it remark.
It was always strange to me how large Vessel eggs really are, especially because there really seems to be little need for it. Vessel hatchlings/nymphs are Tiny. Why are the eggs so big in comparison?
There seems to be waaaay too much unnecessary/excess space in each egg if there's only one Vessel per egg. Usually with eggs, by the end of the gestation period, the spawn is cramped in there with very little excess room. Extra unused space is wasteful, and biology hates being wasteful.
This is why I've personally always subscribed to the headcanon of Vessels eggs actually being more like Egg Sacs/Egg Cases than typical eggs. Both are when, for irl bugs, multiple larva/nymphs hatch from the same "egg"-like gestational container. Egg sacs are common for spiders (they make the actual sac itself with silk; here's a great video showing how one is made.) while cockroaches are know for egg cases (Here's a video of some hatching.)
Ghost's egg clearly isn't that much bigger than the other egg assets, it's just less destroyed, so it's size is a good reference for how big all of them would have been. And it's big enough for at least a handful of Vessel nymphs to have fit inside at once.
^ Case in point.
(You could probably squeeze a few more in there if you treat it more like a the sphere it's supposed to be and also depending on the horns. The main limiter are the heads/shells, since those are the hard parts* of a Vessel; Vessel nymph bodies seem to be quite squishy and flexible.)
(*= This is assuming that Vessel shells were hard during their gestation period. There is a chance they might not have been, since newly hatched nymph insects tend to have flimsy bodies for a while. The Birthplace memory shows that Vessels had hard shells at that point, and that seems really close to the point of hatching, so it seems likely that they hatched with hard shells rather than needing to wait a bit for them to harden up. Also, Vessel biology is weirdly wonky, so irl stuff doesn't really matter.)
Also, curiously, it seems Vessel eggs have two layers:
There's the outer shell, but there's very clearly a second, inner thing that has been broken out of. The different in the breaking look from the outer shell suggests this inner layer is made of a different material. The Pale King's egg lacks this, to it's at the very least unlikely to be a Wyrm thing, or at least not a Wyrm thing on it's own. It might be something unique to the union of Wyrm and Root and thus unique to the Vessels.
It could be a Root Thing, but we know jack shit about the White Lady and exactly how much she contributed to the Vessels.
I mean, we know literally nothing about how the Vessels were made besides Pale Babies Get Thrown Into The Liquid Shadow Pit To Get Stuffed With Black Goop, but that's besides the point.
There's also two alternative theories for why the eggs are so big that I'd like to touch upon: Void Swelling, and Stunted Development.
Let's go with Void Swelling first.
In snake eggs, the eggs tend to get a bit bigger by the time they hatch. Normally, it's not too much. Sometimes, however, the eggs really seem to swell up. Most people I've heard/seen talking about this think that the eggs are absorbing and retaining water from the humid incubation environment. Sometimes it's indicative of a problem; sometimes those swollen eggs start to rot, making it clear that that gestation has failed. Other times, the snake just hatches with a lot of egg goop.
It's possible that the Vessel eggs are so large because they've just been swollen up from the Void infusing into them.
Two problems with this theory: Vessels eggs are clearly hard-shelled, and hard-shelled eggs don't swell. At least, I've never heard of them doing that, but I'll admit I'm not a bird person. Perhaps some eggs got stuffed with way too much void and popped open before it was ready to hatch.
The second issue is that the Abyss is not what I would call a humid place (or, at least, it doesn't LOOK humid), and we don't see any liquid Void anywhere near where the eggs are in the Abyss. All the liquid Void we see is to the left of Vessel Corpses, and we see no egg assets anywhere on the way to and around the Lighthouse.. This makes it rather ambiguous how the Void even infused into the eggs at all, let alone if liquid Void was involved. Given how deep the Birthplace goes, it's impossible to tell what was at the bottom of that shaft before all of the corpses stuffed it up.
Unless ambient smoky environmental Void could have stuffed into the eggs enough to engorge them, which is also a possibility. Void is weird and we know little about how it works/behaves. Still unlikely due to the hard shells, but it's a theory.
The second theory is less about too much Void in the eggs and more about not enough Vessel.
It's possible that, at the time of Void infusion (and thus, death for the gestating Pale Children nymphs) the influence/corruption of the Void caused the Vessels to just stop developing. Dead things don't grow or develop after all.
Perhaps the eggs are so large because the original offspring that was supposed to hatch from those eggs were really supposed to be that large. They were supposed to be the spawn of a Wyrm and a Root combined. Even if the White Lady hadn't of been so big at the time of the Vessel Plan, she's shown she was always capable of eventually growing large. And if the offspring took aspects from PK's original Wyrm form over his dinky bugsona, which I would assume to be possible bc DNA and Genetics, then a larger size would also potentially be expected.
Or maybe some Pale Children would have gotten the Wyrm gene while others got the Bugsona gene, which is what Hornet got, and is absolutely hilarious to think about. Imagine getting riffed on by a twelve foot high sibling bc you got dad's Short Gene.
There's one issue with this theory, and that is of course, Broken Fucking Vessel. Broken Vessel always throws wrenches into Vessel theories, it's like their favorite past time.
Broken Vessel has aged. And, Hollow, more obviously, but BV is the main confusing one. Broken Vessel proves that Vessel can age on their own, without the potential influence/assistance of the King. BV proves that Vessel development isn't permanently stunted.
The most logical solution to this issue I've seen is exposure to the Void. Vessels, on a fundamental level, are made up of Void. It is intrinsically entwined with their very physiology. They're not just walking corpses stuffed full of Void and a Shade, their very flesh IS Void and that Shade.
Case in point:
BV, out of any other Vessel outside of Hollow, is the one who could have potentially come into contact with Void after leaving the Abyss. They're found in the Ancient Basin, which at the time of the game is heavily Void tainted (likely due to the Lighthouse being off and PK fucking off to Buzzsaw Land. That light had likely been the only thing keeping the Void suppressed underneath the Basin.)
PK could have used Void to supplement Hollow's growth into adulthood because Vessels probably literally cannot grow or age without it. Hence why Ghost and all the other escapee Vessels are stuck as nymphs while BV grew a tiny bit.
Of course, the solution to the BV issue also ruins the stunted embryonic development theory too. It's a rather poor and weak theory that I've included only because I though it was a bit interesting. Thinking about what the original Pale Spawn would have been like is always interesting to me.
With that, I have just one more thing to point out.
Ma'am, how the FU--
#hollow knight#Vessels#Vessel theories#This started off just jokingly pointing out how big the eggs were and devolved into an Analysis somehow#No seriously WL how the FUCK did you lay those?!?!?!#Or did you fruit them? Do roots fruit?#Those eggs are big enough to fit Adult THK I s2g#I'm still Salty the Black Egg in BET wasn't a massive Vessel egg sac/case#It would have fit so fucking well and also been so much more thematically tragic for THK#Still endlessly amusing that Hornet and PK are the Exact Same Height without their horns#I like playing with HK sprites can you tell?

fan theory
My fan theory on this was hornet and PK used to train a lot when younger, soon both growing the same attack moves copying one another, Hornet not having to train /that/ hard so she didn't grow up that much compared to her older sibling PK
She still trained a little which is how she grew and didn't just stay as a little buglit like ghost!
-----
Fan theory2 (edit)
Maybe they both trained with the pale king/ one of the knights of the pale king, it could still be training with one another but training with the same person makes sense!
But my fan theory of both still stands i think they trained together/ with the same person!

While I was drawing/looking at reference images, I realized that the king doesn’t look like he was killed by anything void related at all. His eyes don’t drip with void like every other character killed by overexposure to void in game, so what happened? What if he sealed himself away not to save himself, but to preserve the kingsoul? I mean, if I wanted to preserve an important object within me, I would think the dream realm would be a very suitable place to go. Evidently, the king hasn’t survived this, but it doesn’t look like there was a struggle. There was no evidence of the formation of a void creature in the room to have killed him the old fashion way, and no injury on the body itself. Nothing but a force of nature like the knight was ever going to get in or out of that room past all of those saw blades, and based on that, I don’t think the king planned on leaving that room. It looks to me that the king simply let himself wither away on his throne, and that he did it on purpose. The king was by no means a fool. He did not assume that locking himself in a room forever would be safe, and even if he did, he would’ve done more to solve his problems. The king had no workshop for him to toil in, no library to research from, and there was no effort made to stop the infection after he resigned himself to that room. The king was not there to save his kingdom in safety, and he was most certainly not there because he wanted to outlast the infection. The king wanted to die somewhere that was near impossible to reach. Somewhere in a near impregnable dream behind a nigh unwalkable path. But I don’t think that’s because he didn’t want to be found. After all, the king has tried tasking his children with a near impossible task in the hopes one will rise to meet the challenge before, and it worked. If we trust The White Lady’s perspective, The Hollow Knight was the perfect vessel before it was “tainted by an idea instilled,” so the idea that the king trusted the strength of his children enough to predict, or at the very least hope that one of them would reach the king would despite these measures, is not out of the question. In fact, the increased security of a task like this would make sense as a more intense test of the purity of a vessel. If the parkour skills needed to define THK as hollow were as simple as escaping the abyss, then the saw blades could certainly be explained as either a revised test of a vessel’s purity, or its will. Maybe the king predicted the creation of the void heart? If the vessel’s will is being tested, it would support the idea that the king knew about the possibility of the void heart, as it unites the void behind the bearer’s will. If this is true, then it may explain why The White Lady gives you the white fragment with the following quote. “I have a gift, held long for one of your kind. When united, great power is granted, and on the path ahead, great power it shall need.” This is most definitely referring to the unification of the king soul, but what if it were also a thematic parallel to the great power granted with the unification of the void? If this is the case, I don’t believe that the white lady was informed about all of the details, but likely just that a vessel was needed to end the infection, and that she must give the white fragment to a vessel she deems worthy. To ask the last question about this theory I could think of, why is the corpse of the king in a room dark with what is likely void if void is not what killed him? It could be deduced that the king’s regrets’ darkening of the room was meant to be a more subtle nod to his disposition at the time of his death than a hint as to what killed him, as the void tears found on those killed by void serve that purpose well and wouldn’t have impeded his design, but a darker room alone would be an interesting thematic note as evidence of a nagging question in the king’s head: “Have we payed a cost this great for nothing?” Anyways. Call me a deranged lunatic in the notes.

Dreamer headcanons
• Lurien is half dragonfly (son of an outsider dragonfly and nobleman of the city) and the grandchild of a higher being. He posseses great magic ability, especially in regards to sight. (Also fun fact: Dragonflies irl have great vision, and are known to have some of the best eyesight of any bug!) I will elaborate on this HC in a separate post Which will go over my dragonfly lore.
• Lurien helped the king create the worldsense spell, that he gifted the hollow knight. (A spell that allows one vision of an entire kingdom from one location.)
• Lurien and Monomon were very close before becoming dreamers having spent much time working together as advisors of the king. They often argued though, with Lurien never questioning his monarch and Monomon always advocating for trying new ideas, looking from all perspectives ect. (The pale king appreciated both very much.)
• They are also both poets, which they bonded over. And Lurien had definitely at one point painted a fog canyon art piece, that he gifted to her.
• Monomon is the oldest of the dreamers, technically, She is actually already over a hundred years old, before becoming a dreamer.
• She was once a regular (at least more regular) type of bug, and was later turned into a jellyfish.
• She always had an amazing mind and used her scientific skill to help the kingdom progress. She impressed the king so greatly that he granted her immortality (I will elaborate on this in a sec) And entrusted her to keep all the kingdoms records.
• Then of course with this new immortality, and new position, she became more ambitious. She created the jellyfish and fog canyon, Wanting to prove that she could be like the higher beings and create her own people/followers. (Typical god complex mad scientist behavior.)
• The king had her punished by taking away her true form. and turning her into a jellyfish creature. (Which she eventually grew used to and even happily accepted.)
• Of course as long as she stayed loyal to the king, the jellyfish did. And she remained loyal to the end.
• She was one of his foremost trusted advisors, and besides the white lady, the most involved in his plan to seal the infection.
• About the immortality thing- that was granted to her through her mask. The king had heard of the mask maker of Deepnest and his power. He made a deal with the then ruler of Deepnest (this is before Herrahs time) to have a mask created for Monomon.
• Skip forward a hundred years or so, the king is amidst his plan to seal the infection. He needs dreamers and at this point Monomon and Lurien have both volunteered. In order for the plan to work they need their masks and he goes to deepnest again to make a deal for two more masks to be made. This is how Herrah becomes aware of the dreamer plan, and her deal with him is made not long after.
I hesitate to elaborate on Herrahs backstory, only because Silksong might do just that. (I hope it does!) Anyway this all may be disproven but here we go~
• Herrah married the old sire of Deepnest who was a weaver (higher minded being) And this caused much controversy in Deepnest. She was not a weaver, not a royal, not even of noble birth.
• She did have her loyal followers of course, but many of her people, did not have much faith in her.
• The sire died unexpectedly in battle against the mantis tribe and Herrah was put in a worse position. Now Deepnest depended solely on her. (And to make matters more difficult she had not yet birthed an heir.)
• The pale king soon discovered how unprepared Herrah was to be queen, and was quick to make an alliance with her, after the sires passing.
• Herrah agreed to the alliance. (And trade routes and what not were established, the stag station, trams ect.)
• Herrahs people were not so much in agreement. The relations between Deepnest and Hallownest remained shaky to say the least.
• The bargain for Hornet was made both to the advantage of Herrah and the King. Herrah would have an heir, And with the new queen of Deepnest being his daughter, the king would gain more influence over the land.
• not wanting for her daughter to grow too attached to her before the sealing, Herrah sent Hornet to the hive to train when she was very young. (Herrah trained in the hive herself when she was in her youth. And trusted them to care of her daughter.)
• ooh also Deepnest culture is very family oriented specifically revolving around the children/the youth.
I feel like I have more, but this is all I can remember for now. Might add onto this later.

So idk if this is intentional or not by Team Cherry but I was thinking about this today.
Now we know that PK and The Radiance are both higher beings of light. It's why The Radiance got so pissed at him entering Hallownest and basically having all her moths flock to a new lamp.
Anyways that's not the point. Here's the point:
The Pale King and his close subjects are often associated with light. But not just any light. Cool Light. This is in stark contrast with The Radiance, who is represented by warm colors and wouldn't ya know it, Warm Light.
Warm Light is often seen as more natural (as the sun in general produces warm light) than Cool Light, which only really started to come about after the industrial revolution. Once again this lines up with PK and Radiances roles in the story, since PK was responsible for the "modernization" of Hallownest where The Radiance was representative of the old world.
Anyways idk if any of this makes sense. Thanks for listening to my rambles

One of the funniest things about hollow knight is that there’s a character named elder bug who is set up as an old man character yet confirmed to be younger than like 80% of the cast. The small baby shaped protagonist is actually older than most of the other characters, (probably) including hornet.
#hollow knight#he’s definitely younger than the knight/hk/quirrel/hornet/seer#probably younger than sly too. oh & obviously younger than ogrim and white lady.#<- abt elder bug#hornet is probably? the youngest one out of all of her siblings?#i don’t remember if the vessels were born before hornet happened/if pk found the dreamers before mass infanticide#thinking about hk recently getting really tilted at the towers by popular theories that are directly contradicted by the canon text#mostly the moth tribe wrt choosing the pale king over radiance which is one of the most interesting elements about hk lore#and also a big brained lamp joke.#also been thinking about quirrel lately but I don’t have anything to say about that beyond quirrel my friend quirrel :)#i would hope the PK ironed out the plans of containing the infection and finding the dreamers before baby killing time but I don’t have much#faith in the man who thinks a buzz saw gauntlet is appropriate decor#i thhhink white lady is probably the oldest character you can talk to? maybe? or grimm but he’s so unhelpful

Ok wait new hk theory, this follows the idea that vessels were tested by seeing if they could escape the abyss and the only one to climb up was the hollow knight. But think about something wouldn't being able to escape the abyss basically require thought and a mind? Escaping the abyss requires that you can see and plan out a route from platform to platform, if you were truly mindless you'd be stuck at the bottom either doing nothing or mindlessly lashing out at whatever comes close, the only ones to even get to the first platform would be the tiny minority of vessels that are in fact not hollow and the higher they get the more thought and consciousness they would have. By trying to weed out the ones who weren't hollow through this method the pale king basically guarantees that the vessel chosen was the one with the strongest will, the most conscious and thinking one, one who would be extremely aware of all it's mistakes and one who would miss it's father dearly. We can also see that ghost who got second place before falling has an extremely strong will (shown in game by y'know ghost doing everything basically)

Hornet/Broken vessel theory time!
So actually this is the backstory for the broken vessel and how it came to be, in the 'new Hallownest' story/fic my sisters and I have been working on.
also a big part of Hornet's backstory! (Specifically in relation to her hunting the vessels)
Before Hornet started challenging the escaped vessels to test their strength. (Which she did to prepare them for potentially facing the Hollow knight/the Radiance.) her original plan was to use them to contain the infection without having to break the seals/kill the Hollow knight.
The first escaped vessel she encountered was Kin, who was used in this plan. The plan being that if this vessel could purposely allow itself to take in the infection, and it was truly empty, unlike Hollow, it could at least somewhat contain the radiance (or at least keep her from gaining more power.)
Hornet believed Kin must have been pure, and untainted. (But of course no vessel could actually be..)
Kin agreed to help Hornet, because it wanted to help Hollow. (Kin is especially protective of all the vessels. A leader to a group who escaped the abyss, and we're almost all killed by Nosk.) a very protective and emphatic vessel, Kin was not able to contain the infection.
(And it being infected is what caused the infection to spread in the ancient basin. Which was too close to the abyss to otherwise have been affected.)
Upon learning that the Radiance had taken full control of the vessel, Hornet was forced to fight it. Kin was defeated, and Hornet had to come up with a new plan.
The next vessels she encountered (such as Greenpath vessel) she decided could still be used to save Hallownest, but must either completely take Hollow's place, or what she preferred and believed to be the best option, unite the void and destroy the infection once and for all. Either way they would have to face the Hollow knight, and she fought them each to test whether or not she believed them to be strong enough. Because if they were to face Hollow and be killed, it would be putting the entire kingdom in much worse danger.
#Broken vessel as a failed experiment of the pale king's makes absolutely no sense to me at all#I do not get why it is such a popular theory#For pk's character specifically it doesn't make sense#Love kin but definitely one of the most confusing characters#This backstory is a little confusing tbh but it is the best we could do to explain things#If anyone has any questions do ask!#hollow knight#hollow knight theory#hollow knight headcanon#hollow knight hornet#Hk hornet#hk broken vessel#hk bv#Hk lost kin#Hollow knight broken vessel#Hollow knight lost kin

"Hornet is Void" theory, not in any sort of intentional, engineering-your-other-babies or whatever way, but in a "PK had awful policy with Void cross-contamination and it meant that Hornet came out with a handful of VERY conspicuously void-y characteristics that everyone tries to ignore because no one actually knows for sure where they came from and acknowledging them in any formal way could lead t a political shitshow" way.
#we speak#hollow knight#listen theyre not saying that shes *not* void but if anyone acknowledges the void features itll open a can of worms that cant be closed#it was 100% unintentional but people still Gossip#and now the lubricating membrane over her eyes is the pitch black darkness of the abyss#and markings that would otherwise be so subtle as to be invisible are now light-absorbing DARK#she doesnt actually get void powers or anything from it it just means that every time she bleeds it leaves stains on every fucking thing
