HALESTORM Is '70' Or '80 Percent' Done Making New Album: 'We're Excited About It'
Tumblr media
In a new interview with PK of Louisville, Kentucky's ALT 105.1 radio station, HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for the band's follow-up to 2022's "Back From The Dead" album. Lzzy said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "We've had three separate sessions in the studio with — we're making a record with [producer] Dave Cobb. And he's actually a huge closet metal fan, and so he's really excited. And so we're making this great music, but we're constantly touring. So we've had, like, three different sessions in the studio. We're probably — what? — 70, 80, maybe, percent there. We have a studio in our house and so I'm doing a lot of the finishing touches on vocals and sewing everything up, doing solos and all that. And then we get back in in December to just say, 'Okay, this is good.' And then, yeah. And then there we are. So we're excited about it. We really are."
Cobb has shared in nine Grammy wins, including four for "Best Americana Album" and three for "Best Country Album". He's also been named "Producer Of The Year" by the Country Music Awards, the Americana Music Association (twice) and the Music Row Awards, and has been a Grammy nominee in the category.
Lzzy previously talked about working with Cobb earlier this month in an interview with "The Morning After With Nic & Big J" on the 100.3 The X Rocks radio station. She said: "It's been a really crazy whirlwind making [the new album]. We ended up going in with Dave Cobb, the producer. And it's something completely different than what we've ever had. We literally rolled in with all of our baggage, all of our songs, our riffs, the whole thing, and he's, like, 'No, we're not gonna do any of that. We're just gonna start.' And I'm, like, 'What? There's no plan? What's happening.' And it's kind of beautiful 'cause all of us are very ADHD, and we're locked together in this house in Savannah, Georgia, which, if you've ever been to Savannah, Georgia, there's no scene. It's a spooky historic town with a lot of Spanish moss. And we're locked — literally I'm saying locked, because we locked the doors — we're locked in this house full of every piece of equipment you could ever need. It's all set up. The board is there — everything — and we're all unsupervised. Which I can't tell you the last time that has happened making an album — probably since the first record, [when] we were all living in an apartment together. So, all of our inner children are screaming and we're all just getting into the sandbox and playing, 'Hey, I brought some LEGOs. You brought a rocket. Let's see if we can get it to space.' And so all of this stuff has really been coming together in such a weird and organic way, to the point that it's very much peeling back the onion of what is HALESTORM.
"My brother [HALESTORM drummer Arejay Hale] and I have had many moments while making this record where we look at each other and we're, like, 'This reminds me of when we were 14.' It's just wild," Lzzy added. "So, I'm very excited for everyone to hear it and I'm excited for it to be done. And so hopefully we wrap it up in December and get get it the hell out — out of my house. [Laughs]"
Elaborating on the songwriting process this time around and how it was different to some of HALESTORM's previous records, Lzzy said: "I think that the big lesson in the front of the race here that has been answered is that usually the weirdest ideas are the best. And sometimes it's the things that you don't think are very good that everyone collectively is, like, 'No, that's actually great.' And I think that that's been the beautiful thing is that the four of us, even though… I mean, my brother's 37 — he's the young gun, but we're all in our early forties — and we've been doing this a long time together. And so to have that kind of reconnection to who you are as people and as friends and really having that kind of come out in the music and it not be this kind of assembly line, like, 'Okay, Lzzy wrote 12 songs. We all really like 'em. Let's record 'em.' Or, 'Hey, we have this collection. And we have a month to be in the studio. Let's just go and bang it out.' We've really kind of taken the time to really let the music tell us what to do and honestly let our weird brains tell us what to do, because we're all terrible adults [laughs], and I think that we were never meant to be. So it's been nice to just kind of have the freedom to do whatever the hell we want and then worry about the consequences later. [Laughs]"
This past July, Arejay was asked by The VORTX Podcast with host Ethan Jackson about HALESTORM's decision to work with Cobb this time around. Arejay said: "It's always good for a band to, if you want your sound to evolve, bring in some fresh minds into it. And the cool thing about Dave is that he's a total hard rock and metalhead at heart. A lot of his most successful projects have been a lot of country, a lot of alternative — I mean, he's all over the spectrum — so when works with us, you can tell… There's a really great mutual respect between [us], 'cause we've been doing this long enough and he's been doing it for so long. We've been a huge fan of his as well, so there's a lot of mutual respect between the two of us, and you can feel it in the room."
Asked if he and his HALESTORM bandmates set a date for themselves for when they want to be done with a record, Arejay said: "It used to be a lot more stringent in the early days. 'Cause when you're trying to get the band off the ground, you really wanna kind of keep that momentum going. But our last couple of records have been a little bit more laid back, which is nice. It kind of gives it room to breathe. It gives us time to like really assess where we wanna go. And definitely COVID changed everything."
On the topic of whether the HALESTORM members do more work remotely now or if they still all get together in the studio and collaborate on ideas in one room, Arejay said: "Oh, it's so much more effective for us to be in the same room. I think it kind of forces you to just… I guess we work well under pressure, 'cause, going back to your last question… We definitely feel the pressure to get the album out at a certain time, but what really cranks up the pressure is the fact that we're leaving Nashville and going to Savannah for only a set period of time, 'cause Dave [only has certain] windows [of availability]. And it really forces us to just dig into your gut and just pull things out. And when we're all together in the room and Joe [Hottinger, HALESTORM guitarist] starts playing around with the riff and I start jamming with them, things just come out, things just happen. There's a magic there."
In June, Lzzy told Decker of the rock station Razor 94.7/104.7 (WZOR) that she and her HALESTORM bandmates initially "got a lot of pushback" from their team about the prospect of working with Cobb. She recalled: "We were saying, 'Oh, wouldn't it be cool to do a record with Dave Cobb? Because that would be something that nobody would really expect from us. And I bet you he would come up with some crazy ideas. Don't know the guy, but let's figure it out.' And everybody on our team was, like, 'No, no, he's too busy. That's not you. He's got this stuff going. He's got, like, nine Grammys with Chris Stapleton. That's not your scene.' And so we kept pushing back. We're, like, 'No, no, no. Just ask him. Just ask him. We can handle rejection, but just ask him.' And so finally, our A&R guy at our label is, like, 'Fine, I'll reach out. Whatever. Just stop bugging me.' And so he reached out, and then he called me, like, the next day. He's, like, 'Hey, I heard back from Dave Cobb. And guess what? Not only does he absolutely know who you are, but he's been wanting to make a record with you for, like, seven years. And he has a plan already of how he wants to do it.' And we're, like, 'What? This is sick.' So anyway, we went to go test the waters, and we go into the studio. And look, I write every day. When I die, there's gonna be so much that everyone has to sift through, just gibberish songs, all that. So I always have, like, a bank with me, like, 'Here's riffs, here's songs, here's subject titles, here's poetry.' And he was, like, 'No, no, no. We're not gonna do anything that you already have. Nothing.' I'm, like, 'Uh. What?' And he's, like, 'No, we're just gonna start.' Everyone's sitting in a circle and we're, like, gonna kumbaya. So everyone got an instrument, like, 'All right. So what are we feeling today?' I'm, like, 'Is this a therapy session?' And we ended up — it's crazy, 'cause then we'll like grab on to something 'cause of that pressure of, like, 'Well, I was thinking about this as this is happening.' 'Cool. Let's go there.' And so he has this amazing instincts that are very, like, you can't see it when you're in it. And then, as soon as we start like putting stuff together, we kind of zoom out and, like, 'Oh, wait a minute. This is so wild and awesome and exactly what we do.' So it's very strange. But we're all very free. And then the other thing is that while we're writing it, we're recording it at the same time. So these tracks are, like, us discovering the song for the first time as well as we're performing them. There are some things that we're performing them all at the same time. There's one track in particular that we completely forgot to put the click track on, and we did like three takes like that, and then we're, like, 'Oh, wait. We don't even have a click going.' Arejay said something, like, 'Were we supposed to have like a click track so we all are on time together?' And everyone's, like, 'We didn't even notice it was gone.' And so we did another take with the click. We're, like, 'No, we like that other one better.' So there's stuff like that. A lot of weird surprises. There's a lot of space. And we're really excited because we're not going country or anything like that, or Americana. This is such a new — it's got so much teeth, and it's so different than what we just did with 'Back From The Dead', but in this almost weightier, heavier way. And the lyrics are — I'm tackling subjects I've never tackled before because I'm having the freedom to do so. So I'm very excited."
HALESTORM and I PREVAIL recently embarked on summer 2024 co-headlining tour. Produced by Live Nation, the trek kicked off on July 9 in Raleigh and ran through August 17 in Las Vegas. HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD and FIT FOR A KING served as support. The tour was also the catalyst and the creative spark for HALESTORM and I PREVAIL's collaborative track "Can U See Me In The Dark?", which was released in June.
"Back From The Dead" has tallied over 100 million streams worldwide. Rolling Stone called the title track "a biting but cathartic howler about overcoming all obstacles," and that song as well as "The Steeple" marked their fifth and sixth number ones at rock radio, respectively. Associated Press said the album "will definitely be in the running for best hard rock/metal album of the year." Their previous album, "Vicious", earned the band their second Grammy nomination, for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the song "Uncomfortable", the band's fourth #1 at rock radio, and led Loudwire to name HALESTORM "Rock Artist Of The Decade" in 2019.
Fronted by Lzzy with Arejay, guitarist Joe Hottinger and bass player Josh Smith, HALESTORM's music has earned multiple platinum and gold certifications from the RIAA, and the band has earned a reputation as a powerful live music force, headlining sold-out shows and topping festival bills around the world, and sharing the stage with icons including HEAVEN & HELL, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett and JUDAS PRIEST. Additionally, Lzzy was named the first female brand ambassador for Gibson and served as host of AXS TV's "A Year In Music".

Second period 🚨
Palat-Hischier-Bratt
Hughes-Haula-Toffoli
Meier-Lazar-Holtz
Mercer-Nosek-Bastian
McMichael stole puck from Nosek near right point, deked around Nemec on right side and tucked show in off Daws glove for his second of game and 10th of season. They were reviewing something. Possible if puck crossed line completely. But good goal.
McMichael with the best goal of his career at 4:17.
2-1 Capitals.
What a play.
First multi-goal game in the NHL for Connor McMichael. Nic Dowd hasn't played for the Capitals this period. Not on the bench.
Ovechkin called for tripping Nosek at 10:38
Devils PP (0-for-1 so far)
Pretty good PK by Charlie Lindren there, including right toe save on Toffoli near the end.
Capitals say Nic Dowd has an upper-body injury and won't return tonight. (Don't know if it's related, but Dowd had his helmet knocked off on a hit by Meier about 1:55 into the game. Grabbed his face after and was quite upset with the official. But he played the remainder of the period.)
Icing whistle against the Devils
#NJDevils  have outshot #AllCaps  25-12 so far. They trail 2-1. Charlie Lindgren has been good.
Icing on Washington
After two periods, the Capitals lead the Devils 2-1.
Shots on goal are 27-16 New Jersey (17-8 Devs in 2nd)

some thoughts about washington capitals 24-25 game 1 in no particular order
-absolutely 0 complaints about any of the new players. wow. this team looks totally different with them on it (in a good way). the speed, the mojo in the offensive zone...this is a New Look caps team for sure.
-losing roy and playing most of the game with 5 dmen is really unfortunate. praying that he is not out for an extended period of time...but if he is, alex2 is gonna need to step tf up
-given the roster turnover, playing most of the game with 5 D, and this being Game 1 for us vs Game 4 for the devils, i think we played quite well...
-...with the exception of the third line. good lord. they're gonna need Work and as i suspected the "4th" line is probably gonna be getting more ice time than lappy's line this season lol. milano needs to sit, put in vrana. idk what's wrong with sonny but his play on the ice is not it.
-PIERRE LUC DUBOIS RULES??? i'm sure he'll piss me off later this season but right now he's playing GREAT with willy and mcmikey, you can see flashes of serious offensive creativity that was just ABSENT on the caps last year in every way, and most importantly HE IS FEISTY. thus far pld is a point a game player in his caps tenure and he's a spicy quebecois meatball so i'm in love
-honorable mentions for who i am in love with from this game: chychrun and dewey.
-chychrun is...everything he's always been advertised to be. wow. i think he's about to be my new favorite player i LOVE defensemen who play like him i mean just watching him walk the blue line was incredible, his instincts are amazing...he and carlson seem to work well together??? wow
-DEWEY. MY KING. NIC DOWD MAY HAVE FAILED ME TONIGHT (it's ok dowder i know u won't let it happen again) BUT YOUUUUUUU. YOU SAID "i am the new garnet hathaway. this 4th line will be so powerful" AND I LOVE U FOR THAT
-caps pk looked REALLY fucking good (despite missing roy and dowd being in the box for two of the pks)
-caps pp looked loads better than last season already. not stagnant, new wrinkles, new personnel, just...the ability to give different looks other than OVI SHOT FROM THE OVI SPOT. love to see it
in conclusion hockey is back and so are my favorite chaos goblins
we'll get em next time boys

6th knight because it’s my favorite, as you can probably tell:
Ina and PK tinkering in the workshop together (or maybe Ina being the Rubber Duck while PK actually does something) when Ina finds sketches of the sealing armor and notes on the black egg
-💚
I really just went "Ohhh it's gonna be something nic- FUCK"
Baited me with possible fluff then stomped on my heart

Odebrałam zamówioną z Rossmana paczkę, byłam w Biedronce po Go Active proteinowe jedzenie, kupiłam skarpetki i chusteczki z Kokardki w Tedim.

Please explain Dowd's 4th line to me. I think he must like it, but it makes no sense to me at all that he's not playing higher-up
(An ask about my favorite topic, Dowd’s 4th line? Oh yes please)
Nic Dowd is a very talented hockey player, and he would probably excel on higher lines if he were placed there. HOWEVER, that won’t happen, because he is perfectly suited for the role he has, which is the shutdown center. While the top two lines are scoring-focused, Dowd’s line is a defensive line. Their first focus is not to score but to stop the other team from scoring. Dowd and his linemates get 90% of their starts in the defensive zone, which lead the team by a country mile:
Tumblr media
That’s their job, and they’re quite good at it. They get put out on the defensive side because Carbery trusts them, they’re pretty lockdown and good in front of their own net. Dowd and Malenstyn are also the top two penalty killing forwards who WILL be the first out on the PK every single time (provided they’re not the one in the box, which is why you will often see me say “of all the people to be in the box Dowd/Malenstyn is not who I want” when I’m liveblogging the game). The numbers back this up as well, teams aren’t scoring that much when that line is out there; the three of them only trail Mantha and Protas on the team in plus-minus. And that’s your fourth line that’s 3 through 5 on the team in plus-minus, that’s pretty impressive.
So like, the answer to your question is he’s on the 4th line because he’s the defensive shutdown center, a role he’s insanely good at. In fact he’s so good at this, that it’s become A Thing over the last few years that his job specifically is to shut down the other team’s top line. I have a name for this game, every time I see this happen I say “looks like we have another edition of ‘Nic Dowd tries to shut down the other team’s top center’” (or something along those lines). This mostly happens during home games, when we control the line matchups. The coach will deliberately put the Dowd line out there against the other team’s top line in hopes that they can neutralize the opposing star players - usually this means the top center because that’s who Dowd will be taking faceoffs against, but sometimes one of the wingers is the star who needs shutting down. This is why they will often start the game (if the other team is starting the top line), and opposing broadcasts and people will often get super confused we’re purposefully playing the fourth line against the other first line, cause general wisdom says the first line will crush the fourth line. But the thing is, it works. I have watched many, many games where the Dowd line is the one out there against the opposing top line, and those top players do nothing. This isn’t always the case of course, but I’ve watched a lot of games at Capital One Arena where the visiting stars are eerily quiet and they can’t get anything going, which is in large part due to the Dowd line annoying the shit out of them and shutting them down. He’s done this and been super effective at it against, in particular, Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Tage Thompson, Jason Robertson, among others. He recently did this against the Horvat-Barzal line against Isles.
But there’s no one he does this better against than Sidney Crosby. Of course Sid still scores against us a bunch sometimes, but it would be much more if not for Dowd. He has an uncanny ability to win faceoffs against Sid (I think it’s something to do with him being right handed, which none of the other caps centers are), which was probably a factor in matching them up in the first place. And not only is he effective but I can just see on his face that Dowd just annoys the absolute shit out of Sid lol. I’m pretty sure one time Sid punched him in the face lmao. I like to joke around that Dowd is Sid’s “enemy” and that Sid has like an enemies board on his wall that he stares at and gets angry at and there are many people on this board but Nic Dowd’s face is front and center lol
Dowd doesn’t always get the direct matchup against the top line, but it happens enough that it’s a thing. How many other fourth lines are getting matchups like that? In my opinion, the Dowd line is the best fourth line in hockey (I’ll take arguments for that Islanders fourth line but that’s it). And not only that, but this fourth line has existed in two different iterations and they’re both damn good. For YEARS, the fourth line was Carl Hagelin-Nic Dowd-Garnet Hathaway. You KNEW they were gonna be together every single game, and they stayed together as a line for a long, long time. The other lines would all shuffle around but that one was set in stone. After they were established I can’t remember them ever being separated save for if somebody was injured. And they were one of the most effective and fun fourth lines I’ve ever seen. They were mean, and tough to play against. They all blocked shots, and they all hit and hit hard, Hathaway especially. Not to mention that Nic and Garnet were besties and clearly loved playing with each other, and Carl was like exasperated by them but fond of them and worked with them very well. And now the Nic Dowd line 2.0 is much the same way. Beck Malenstyn-Nic Dowd-Nicolas Aube-Kubel have the same role and plays almost the same as the iteration before them. Malenstyn slotted perfectly into the role that Hathaway left, he’s a big guy who hits a bunch and blocks a lot of shots and I believe he’ll only do more and more of the physicality as time goes on, that’s what he was known for in Hershey. NAK, like Hagelin, is faster than the other two. And all three of them aren’t afraid to throw a punch. And they very very clearly work incredibly well together. You could see evidence of it last year: Malenstyn visibly clicked with Dowd and Hathaway when he was up with the big club, and I am a firm believer that he would’ve had that spot for the entire rest of the season had he not gotten hurt. And NAK also clicked with Dowd and Hathaway and he was with them for like the second half of the season if I remember correctly. Dowd very clearly really liked the both of them (I used to say that “those two are fraternal twin shitstarters and Nic Dowd just has to absolutely love them and want them on his wings always”), and tbh I was really surprised when they sent down NAK before opening night. Dowd and Malenstyn had been working well together since the beginning of the season, but they absolutely BLOSSOMED once NAK returned to the NHL level. The two of them literally didn’t have any points on the season until NAK came back. My friend and I would make our jokes, like “those are Dowd’s two sons and he wants to play with them” and how he was probably saying “you can pry them from my cold dead hands” and how he grabbed each of them (beck especially) and was like “okay these ones are mine these are my wingers and I am taking them with me everywhere.” And like I thought it was just jokes but then all 3 of them popped off in NAK’s return game and I’m like oh I see it wasn’t just me projecting it was 100% real. They hadn’t all 3 played together before the season and I was curious to see how they’d play together and they did not disappoint, their chemistry from that first game has been absolutely wild.
So, to bring it back to your original question, there are many reasons why Dowd doesn’t play higher up in the lineup. His strengths lie in this particular role of defense, and he and his linemates are very effective at it. Also, while he’s very good at what he does, he is not more offensively talented than the other centers on this team: Strome, Kuznetsov, and McMichael (and Nicky). Like, he’s not above them in the center hierarchy. And he’s not gonna move up to play wing, he’s a center the end. And I am perfectly happy with him where he is, he’s a stellar fourth line center that most any team would probably kill to have tbh, and he does a beautiful job at what he does.
This uhhh likely went much longer than you expected it would, sorry. I’m passionate about the fourth line. But I hoped this answered your question.

at Bearden 1 Hardin Valley Academy 0 - Overtime
DISTRICT 4-AAA FINAL (non-elimination)
Friday, May 12, 2023 7pm
Power forward Lucas Nordin scored on a penalty kick eight minutes into overtime, leading Bearden to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over visiting Hardin Valley to win their fifth consecutive district tournament title.
Nordin drew the penalty with 2:29 remaining in the first ten-minute overtime period, when he beat two defenders and drove the ball from the left side into the eighteen. As he was setting up a right-footer from twelve yards, a trailing defender tripped him up just as he was about to shoot.
The two teams played a fast-paced, spirited eighty minutes before going into extra time, with Bearden outshooting the visitors 21 to 8 (8-2 on goal) in regulation. The Hawks gained momentum as the game wore on, with each team manufacturing four dangerous shots during overtime.
Hamid Djouadi was relentless pushing the ball into the attack zone and Jack Raulston was ever-present deep into both ends of the pitch. Cole Hutchison kicked butt on the outside lane, while Nic Prins battened things down on the other side. Cole Stopka and Shepard McMurry anchored the backline as sure-handed Logan Nelson earned his ninth shutout in goal with confident reads and gritty play.
Bearden will now play Oak Ridge at home on Tuesday in a Region 2-AAA elimination game.  West was a 3-1 winner over the Ridgers and earned the right to host Hardin Valley--winners will meet on Thursday.
Goals: LUCAS NORDIN (88’ penalty kick).
Shots/Shots-on-goal: BHS 25/9 HVA 12/4. Corners: BHS 11 HVA 4. Fouls: BHS 8 HVA 14. Cards: HVA#33 (17’), HVA#13 (58’), HVA#16 (68’), BHS#7 (91’).Conditions: fast, cloudy, 70 degrees. Attendance: 438. Records: BHS 14-0-3 HVA 10-2-6.
Outside the box...Nordin has scored at least one goal in the last ten games...Bearden has scored 66 goals on the season, and while this is low by Bulldog standards, it should be noted the 2021 State Runner-up team only scored 60—conversely, the 2016 State Champs and the 2007 State Runner-up team each scored 106...the loss was only the second this season for Hardin Valley, both at the hands of the Bulldogs...forwards Nordin and Ethan Ford enhanced their new buzz cuts with a ‘Mohawk’ trim for this game...Woof!

Lq fast - 20h
Wypite 176
Spalone 377
Tumblr media
Muszę go zrobić żeby wags wreszcie zaczęła spadać i wrócić do tych 82.5 kg a potem będzie już lepiej i powoli ku celowi. Chcę nz wizycie 11.09 żeby doktor zauwayła różnicę bo zawsze pyta o wagę- wie że mam stwierdzoną anoreksję.
To tyle na dziś. Chudej nocy 🦋🎀

Prawidłowa waga nie wystarcza. Muszę być chuda. Muszę wyglądać jak nikola. Muszę przestać jeść. Parodniowa głodówka mi nie zaszkodzi. To nic takiego.
I sama jakoś sobie radzić.
