Project Sekai but something seems off theory
Yesterday I played the pjsk but something seems off Roblox game and it ended at a scene of An with Akito on the ground while Nene watches. I didn't notice the WIP in the game so I played it hoping to get a clear idea of what the lore is, but since it's not finished I was left confused at that last scene.
After searching for theories all over the place and finding close to nothing, I decided to piece together something coherent on my own yesterday and posted it on the fandom wiki of all places. I then went ahead and made an update the morning after.
This version is totally up to date as of posting, so feel free to disregard reading the wiki versions unless you like reading progress-styled stuff.
Disclaimers:
I wrote this theory based off memory mostly, but I watched playthroughs to double check. Still, there may be stuff lacking here and there.
I am not an avid fan of pjsk, so most of the canon lore I'm aware of came from the wiki, google searches, and whatever I know off the top of my head from fandom interaction.
This theory also references the Saki Glue Theory, which I'll summarize: The Saki Glue theory is a theory based on Saki's terminal illness. It is a theory saying that if Saki had not recovered and died before the main story, it would've caused a butterfly wing effect that would lead to most of the bands not forming.
Thesis: There are two versions of Mizuki, one of them is the player, and the other Mizuki (and possibly Rui) has trapped the entire cast of Vivid Bad Squad, Wonderlands x Showtime and 25-ji Nightcord de in a SEKAI. Tsukasa may or may not be dead.
At the beginning of the game, Rui tells you (the player) to head over to Mizuki in place called the baseplate (which I believe is a SEKAI due to how it looks) and says she has something to tell you. As the player repeatedly interacts with Mizuki, causing a short term timeloop, more people from the mentioned bands start to appear.
Then, when Toya, Akito, An and Ena are here, the world becomes greyer and the sky begins to quickly turn night and day, which implies several days have gone by. The characters present as this plays out also look tired, while Emu mentions not knowing who Tsukasa is.
Throughout all of this Tsukasa is in the background.
(Ena is blanked out, which foreshadows her death later on.)
It is then the player is transported to a hospital room, where Tsukasa is mourning by an empty hospital bed. Through the fact that this is Tsukasa in a hospital, it only makes sense to assume he is grieving a no longer alive Saki. This is where the Saki Glue Theory comes into play.
Since the bands have already been formed, I believe Saki may have died during canon, which explains why these selected bands are here. With the exception of Leo/need, WxS and VBS are the only bands that would be heavily affected by Saki's passing.
We then cut to highschool in a dark setting, somewhere you can find a note that I tried to decode but couldn't find anything. Later, the player encounters Rui, who will walk into you with a sad face, before returning back to the plain where everyone looks distraught.
What I believe happened is that, after Saki's passing, Rui grew concerned for Tsukasa's well-being and approached Mizuki on the matter. In Chan's animation, "My Dreams are Endless Flowing", it features Mizuki granting wishes, with Rui rubbing the lamp intensely. How I see this is that Rui hoped Mizuki would create a SEKAI to help Tsukasa in some way.
(This also may foreshadow the player being Mizuki later in the game.)
But (with the Saki Glue Theory in mind), I believe Mizuki decided that they shouldn't stop there, and ended up including VBS. The plain SEKAI could potentially be Niigo's SEKAI, repurposed for Rui which is why Niigo got included as well and also why, when asked what that baseplate plain is, Ena finds it hard to answer with something specific.
(Also, when asked who Mizuki is to Ena, she answers that the player should know that. This also could've been foreshadowing the player being Mizuki.)
Later, Mafuyu tells the player to wake up before something bad happens, back turned to you, and after encountering An back in the highschool, who complains to the player for not bringing a flashlight and the highschool being dark, both her and the player are implied to have been "attacked" by a blackened out Rui.
It is then you appear in Mizuki's room, another foreshadowing to the player being her. You find a note written by Mizuki, and the friend she mentions in the note being mad at her may imply to be Rui, based on the fact he previously went after the player in the high school. Just like Emu, Mizuki does not seem to remember who Tsukasa is.
What I believe here is that Mizuki controls the SEKAI through her sleep, but canonically SEKAIs are a physical place that members can travel into through a specific song. They are also places that can be influenced by the members' emotions. For Niigo's SEKAI case, it can only be influenced by Mafuyu directly.
Which is why I also believe that Mizuki may have somehow taken control of Niigo's SEKAI, but due to some undiscovered event, Mizuki (and possibly the rest except for Rui) ended up forgetting who Tsukasa is, which permanently locked them into the SEKAI due to this corruption in memory. Alternatively, the corruption of memory may have been the result instead of the cause in whatever's actually locking them in the SEKAI.
Since Mizuki took control of the SEKAI, it would explain why the first founders of Niigo's SEKAI, Mafuyu and Kanade, are not in the foreground of this entire story. They may have most likely been suppressed by Mizuki for the SEKAI's repurpose.
(To note, I am unsure whether Mizuki [the player] being in her bedroom implies that she is able to return to the real world on her own, or she has recreated her room in the SEKAI and uses sleep within the SEKAI to control it.)
After the player returns to the bed and appears back in the baseplate, Nene is seen being aggressive with Emu and An is trying to stop her. Rui is turned away, upset. Mizuki seems to be the only one looking remotely pleased.
Going back on the note found in Mizuki's room, I initially said this note could be written by Rui, but after seeing this, I also believe it could be Nene as well. In the Sinking Town animation, there is a scene of Nene cussing who I assume is Mizuki out, followed by a note with something I can roughly translate into 'I hurt, I hurt'.
It seems like Nene is the only character seen being aggressive, and so it is possible the note to Mizuki in the bedroom could be from Nene as well.
We are then taken back to the hospital, where the player will find a note saying someone has been acting differently, to the point it comes off as annoying to them and they have no idea what to do anymore. The someone in question has their name jumbled in code, and since I've yet to know what cipher it uses, based on the 'he' pronoun being used and the circumstance, the someone is most likely Tsukasa.
Additionally, after this, the player then witnesses Tsukasa stabbing himself in the neck. It is implied then that Tsukasa died.
The baseplate resets, and Tsukasa, who used to sit in the background of the other WxS, ends up disappearing.
Originally, I believed that Tsukasa may have done this to himself in the real world, hence he disappeared from the SEKAI and everything reset to make it seem like everything's okay. But this would contradict my theory that they're trapped. Hence, I believe Tsukasa's grief was so strong, Rui's plan to have him be safe in the SEKAI fell through, and Tsukasa ended up hurting himself anyway.
But since this was done in the SEKAI, Tsukasa may not have truly died. In Chan's animation, "Sinking Town", in the scene that Tsukasa is bleeding out, in the final frame of that scene, his wound seemed to have healed up after some form of corruption happens to him. It would also explain why he reoccurs later in the game.
The player ends up in a classroom with Nene, An and Akito. The door is blocked up. Nene comments that everyone has been acting strange and that Rui and Emu specifically have been acting weird and it would be best to avoid them. Not only that, she feels confused herself.
An, too, acts confused, with most of her answers to the player's questions end up being some form of 'I don't know.' But when asked why they're in school, she answers to be safe, though that is only her assumption.
Akito is seen in the back drawing Kohane and Toya. I have yet to understand why Kohane is missing entirely from the SEKAI aside from maybe her being not close to Tsukasa, but Toya being missing from the classroom seems to be due to Tsukasa's death.
The only people missing from the classroom, aside from Ena, are people who the narrative considers close to Tsukasa.
Going back to the scene where the player finds a note implying Tsukasa acting differently, I believe this note may have been written by Nene. If not about Tsukasa, then the next 'he' acting strange is Rui. Nene seems to be the only character actively mentioning how strange people have been acting, so it would be safe to assume she wrote this note to someone.
Though, I have yet to understand her somewhat hostile behavior.
After this, it goes somewhat downhill. The next place is a neon mess, and after leaving, you come face to face with Mizuki, who remembers who Tsukasa is, but also mentions having a headache. The void you are in is similar to the one Mafuyu was in when she urged you to wake up.
I believe the headache she is experiencing may be related to why the SEKAI became a huge mess.
Finally, we see Tsukasa again, except he is in 2D form, and something has happened to his arm. I initially believed this to be his sleeve, but in the animation, "Please kindly advise?" Tsukasa is seen wrapping his arm with gauze.
Tsukasa says he is made to do puzzles by a puzzle man, and we can infer this to be Rui by looking at the drawing on the wall behind Tsukasa (and also in a later scene of the game). He also tells the player that he was meant to meet an unnamed 'her', but 'she' wasn't there. I feel like this may be Saki.
From the drawings on the wall on the left, the most I can piece together is that Tsukasa's death had happened. With Rui eyeing a nervous Mizuki with Ena above her and a sharp-tooth grinning Rui beside a bleeding Tsukasa, it is implied Rui is not the best person. At the end, it is implied Emu was stabbed after the enlarged drawing of her going 'what'. Hatsune Miku is seen in some form for the first time.
Rui and Mizuki are the only two characters who are blacked out, and usually this would imply they are the villains of the narrative. However, for Mizuki, her face has a question mark over it. With Mizuki's memory problems, I believe this makes her an ambiguous villain. It is likely her true self may not be present as she does all of this, with her previously mentioned memory problems and headache.
If the player is meant to represent Mizuki at all times, then her condition may be so bad to the point she forgot herself. Which would explain why the player is able to ask who Mizuki is from different people. The art of the question mark on her face supports this.
In the following room, with the black background drawings, red is being used to represent blood. More More Jump is featured in the drawings, bleeding in some way. Tsukasa's neck wound is the only wound not inked in red. Meanwhile, Rui is covered in blood, looking cheery, while An and Nene are looking at him strange.
(Reminder, Nene is the only one that notices something is wrong with Rui [and Emu] and shares this with An in the safe classroom.)
Next to a drawing of Kanade bleeding out, Tsukasa's drawing of him bleeding out is also inked in red and Nene looks at him with a side eye. This is another reason why I believe the note written pre-Tsukasa death was from her.
Back on the rooftop where Ena was, she tells the player she is fixing the ladder to leave, and if it doesn't work, they'll have to find some other exit. Previously, she had told the player the ladder was the way to leave, and to leave this "room" is to walk towards the edge of the rooftop. This would be foreshadowing for later.
In the black void once again, Mafuyu seems mad that the player (or Mizuki) continues to stay asleep.
We then end in a hospital with many beds, one of them having a note. It tells its reader to get well soon, and the receiver could potentially either be Saki or Tsukasa. Saki is an obvious assumption, but my reasoning for assuming Tsukasa is because his neck wound had seemingly healed itself, and so I believe he remained in the SEKAI hospital and the note may have been from anyone within the SEKAI.
The only way to get out is to find a blood stain on the floor of a different bed. Another reason why I believe it is Tsukasa, as his wound would've resulted in that stain.
Then, we are taken to a stage, where Tsukasa is performing for Mizuki and Rui. This is why I believe Tsukasa had been revived by either or both of the two, with the symbolism of Tsukasa performing for the two of them.
Later on we see Ena jumping off the roof in hopes of leaving the SEKAI (or she may have given up, I am not sure), and we meet Rui in Puzzle Sekai. It is implied he may be the Puzzle Guy 2D Tsukasa was talking about in the hallway of drawings as this Rui tells you to solve the situation yourself since this is Puzzle Sekai.
There is writing on the wall that goes "I hate puzzles" this could be from Tsukasa.
After witnessing Mafuyu and Kanade possibly fighting at a table, Mafuyu being the one to instigate, the player’s avatar transform into Mizuki and stays that way for the rest of the narrative. I believe they may have been fighting about Mizuki, though that's just a hunch.
You then go through a cycle of baseplates, repeating the same story, at some point Rui blackens out and tells you to kill Mizuki. Until you eventually spawn to take Mizuki's place.
You then watch an exchange between Kanade and Mafuyu in morse code. Mafuyu feels guilt over Kanade's current condition (even though Kanade claims to be okay).
Either that, or she is apologizing specifically for the fight at the table from earlier.
I still think Mafuyu and Kanade are being suppressed by Mizuki, with Kanade being in a worser condition that Mafuyu since Mafuyu is still able to communicate with Mizuki.
After being turned away by the other members, with you now as Mizuki, a note can be found saying "I feel a little left out." This could potentially be Mizuki, judging from the circumstance.
The player is then taken back to the void with Mafuyu in it, she berates you for making things worse and directly calls you Mizuki. I believe this scene and the scene where Mafuyu is talking to Kanade implies that Mafuyu feels guilt for possibly handing control to Mizuki and also feels that Mizuki has made it feel like it truly is Mafuyu's fault as Mafuyu claims that Mizuki is trying to make her look like the bad guy.
In a long hallway with doors that has faces on the doors of all the cast in the SEKAI, Emu's face on the door is scratched out, in reference to her being stabbed in the drawing room.
Kohane’s door is present in the hallway of doors with the faces on it, but she is also scratched out like Emu with question marks all over (while Emu was scratched out with the words 'hmm' written). I believe this may imply people who question the world heavily will be erased in some way.
Also, there are two doors dedicated to Mizuki, one has her face blackened. The one the player can enter through is the non-blackened one. I believe this supports my idea that the Mizuki we're playing as is different from the Mizuki that's trapping everyone, with neither being the true Mizuki. Either she has experienced full-blown amnesia or she's been split into two.
In Brick World, asking An who Mizuki is makes her uncomfortable, and Mafuyu can be seen standing on the opposite side of the railway to possibly symbolize her being suppressed.
In the final scene it seems something may have happened to Akito that caused him to curl up on the ground, and An may be trying to comfort him. They're the same three featured in the safe classroom, and a chair between the two and Nene supports this.
I am in no way a genius when it comes to making theories. A lot of puzzles I can't decode and there are a few easter eggs I missed out, one being that if you chased Emu in the cat world, you are taken to an execution. And I feel like I don't quite get the full picture in the hallway of drawings.
I've yet to understand why Kohane is missing, Toya disappearing from the narrative aside from being in the baseplate. Nene's hostile behavior, whether Mizuki is being puppeted by Rui or she is actually contributing to the chaos.
There there's Rui being depicted as a cat, and I feel that is related to Tsukasa's arm wound. I also have a hunch Hatsune Miku has a role here, with how she is featured twice as drawings, and how she's physically missing as well.
In any case, I probably won't touch on this again since I don't feel qualified, but thanks if you read everything!
