If you like Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series, I can highly recommend to you P. J. Fitzsimmons' series about Anthony "Anty" Boisjoly (like the wine region, not "Boys-jolly"!) wherein he goes on happy murder adventures with his senile valet Vickers and the ever suffering Inspector Wittersham. It's light, it's hilarious and just the perfect thing for when you're feeling blue!

😊 The Case of the Canterfell Codicil (Anty Boisjoly Mysteries #1) (PJ Fitzsimmons, author; Tim Bruce, narrator) - So straight in the blurb for this book it says "The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cosy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse. The result, for those familiar with Wodehouse or Jerome K Jerome and Ruth Rendell or Dorothy L Sayers, is either an inexcusable offence to several beloved canons, or a hilarious, fast-paced, manor house murder mystery." It's a fairly mediocre imitation to be honest but not so terrible as to be unreadable, and it raced along nicely; ultimately I found it entertaining enough. Given the length and the price (free), I can see myself reading a few more, esp when I get into that 'i'm out of podcasts and books i really want but need something for the love of fuck' place.

Top 40 Albums of 2023

We say goodbye to 2023 with 40 of the best albums we've listened to in the last year, a list topped by Fever Ray's amazing third album "Radical Romantics", another close encounter with Karin Dreijer's extraterrestrial electropop project. Our top 5 albums of the year also include Yo La Tengo's "This Stupid World", one of their best efforts in an amazing career that's nearing its 40th anniversary, Protomartyr's sixth album "Formal Growth in the Desert", another post punk masterclass, and the two excellent albums that newcomers Bar Italia offered us in the year ("Tracey Denim" and "The Twits"), combining a hard work ethic with great talent.

Sparks Fly, chapter 3/3

FitzSimmons, rated M, 7463 words Summary: Jemma, ex-volunteer firefighter and fire investigator, saves a man from the fire in the engineering firm he's working for. Turns out that on top of being very grateful, he's sweet, handsome and very interesting. Now, she just has to do her job and hope he's not a criminal.  A big thank you to @libbyweasley​ for all her help <3 Jemma smiled contentedly as she pressed enter, synchronizing the database with the report she'd just finished and automatically sending a copy to the police. A job well done as always. She stretched her arms over her head and fell back into her chair, allowing herself a minute to rest before calling it a day. It was six already. She'd woken up at six, had her morning run, spent a long day at work and only had time for a tiny sandwich for lunch. She should probably go home, change into her PJs and sink into the couch with a nice dinner and a movie. But another, specific couch was calling out to her. It wasn't that late. And she did promise to tell him when the investigation was over. She would still have time for dinner after that and if he happened to have just made tea, and didn't want to drink it alone, it was only polite of her to accept his invitation. Mind made up, Jemma stood up, grabbed her jacket and handbag and closed her office. She made a quick detour by the bathroom to freshen up. She touched up her lipstick and took out the messy bun she had made on the top of her head. She threaded her fingers through her hair and smiled at the result. Wearing a messy bun all afternoon had somehow created soft waves she couldn't hope to achieve on purpose and, even in this ugly neon lighting, her warm highlights showed nicely. a fluffy concept: celebrating mother's day for the first time (and Elliot is still crawling)

ok this isn’t exactly what you asked for since i missed mother’s day i’m soRRY but it’s pure baby Elliot and dad Loki fluff!!! hope you enjoy!

there’s a tiny mention of loki’s past suicidal thoughts but it’s in the purest way and super fluffy :)

also i’m obsessed with the idea of Loki singing

Loki’s singing something, under his breath and nothing more than a whisper.

Surprisingly, you can understand it in your half-asleep daze, as Loki generally sings in Norse…on the rare occasion he actually does sing.

“You made me run like I’ve never run,” he whispers, and you don’t roll over—you don’t want him to stop. “Try like I had never tried, fight like I had never fought, you made me want to…”

A baby gurgles in response and your husband breathes a quiet laugh; oh.

He brought Elliot in here again. This is the third night he’s done that, snuck out of bed in the early hours of the morning to get the little boy from his crib and bring him to bed, cuddling up with him until he really has to wake up.

“Shh,” you hear him shush your son, and the bed creaks as he bounces him lightly. “You’re going to wake your mother!”

You grin into your pillow.

“I’m always saying I’ll make it right…my dear,” Loki continues singing, his beautiful accent even quieter now. “‘Cause losing you is my greatest fear—”

“Eeurrrrgh!”

“No! Shh!” Loki frantically covers Elliot’s little mouth, and the bed shakes as Elliot squirms away, giggling. “This wasn’t a duet, you little giant.”

The baby squeals. Loudly.

“Elliot, for the love of the nine—”

“It’s okay,” you finally laugh aloud, rolling over with a yawn. “M’awake, let him sing.”

Loki cringes when he sees you awake, brushing the back of his hand along your cheek. “I’m so sorry, my love, we didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Don’t apologise!” You gesture at the two of them, Elliot sitting happily on Loki’s stomach, leaning back against his bent knees in little footie pjs, gnawing on his fingers and listening intently to his father’s voice. “This…is the best thing I’ve ever woken up to.”

“We were trying to let you sleep later,” Loki sighs, his head dropping to the pillow. “But I missed my little boy…and he was crying loud enough for the damned in Hel to hear.”

“Did you wake up your dad, you little rascal?” You laugh and reach for Elliot, tickling his tummy and pulling him onto your own lap. “What’s the matter with you, Elli?”

He just giggles and waves his hands in the air.

“My guess is he needs to be changed.” The god beside you pulls the covers over him again and wraps his arms around your waist, pressing a kiss to the top of your shoulder. “Or…perhaps he’s hungry.”

A cold hand slides up your stomach and you don’t even have to look at the god to see the gleam in his green eyes.

“Mm, maybe.” Poking Loki in the side, he yelps and you set Elliot on his stomach again. “Sorry, snowflake, I just woke up, I say it’s your turn…”

A loud, exaggerated groan comes from the curve of your neck.

“C’mon, daddy, do me a little favour?”

He heaves a giant sigh and practically rolls off the bed, hoisting Elliot into his arms and dragging his feet over to grab a clean diaper from the bathroom cupboard.

“You’re lucky I love you,” he mutters teasingly and sets the little boy on the counter, turning around for a split second—Elliot scrambles off across the counter and when Loki turns around, has nestled himself in the sink and is covering his face with both hands.

The little giggles coming from behind the baby hands make it clear he’s trying to hide.

“Oh dear,” Loki deadpans, staring right at the little guy with a small smile. “I’ve lost my son.”

Elliot throws his hands in the air with a squeal, and Loki gasps. “There he is! Get over here, unðr, I’m supposed to get you cleaned up.”

The baby giggles and lets out a string of garbled sounds, to which Loki nods and hums in agreement as he hovers his hands around him, green wisps of something not from earth winding around Elliot’s little body until the diapers have been switched.

“What an incredible story,” you hear Loki tell Elliot, then he trudges out of the bathroom with your son cuddled tight up against his chest. “That was a traumatic experience for the both of us.”

“Stop it,” you laugh, making grabby hands for your baby and Loki hands him to you with a smile. “I don’t get why you complain so much, you never even touch his diaper, Gandalf.”

“It’s the principle.”

“Screw your principles.”

“I’m a king,” he laughs, kneeling on the bed and sneaking a kiss to your cheek. “Kings don’t change diapers.”

“No, but kings listen to their queens.” You smile sweetly at him and tap his lips with a finger. “And your queen wants you to change your son’s diaper.”

He jokingly groans and leans towards you, catching your lips in a kiss that leaves you breathless, your head dropping against the headboard with a happy sigh. “I only tease,” he murmurs, brushing his nose against yours before taking hold of your lips again. “I would do anything for the two of you.”

“Mmm.”

You grab hold of his jaw and pull him closer, letting him take control of this kiss and manoeuvre your body to where he’s holding your jaw to keep your mouths connected, completely ignoring the way Elliot whines and squirms to get your attention.

“He’s…Elliot, no—” Loki’s lips bounce off yours for a split second when he laughs, but he quickly slips his hand behind your neck and pulls you closer. “He’s got my hair,” he mumbles, nipping gently at your lips with a smile. “I think we’re making him uncomfortable, my love.”

You hear the baby squeal and Loki’s mouth leaves yours with a smack, followed by a yelp from the god as his head is yanked away by a tiny hand.

“Elliot, Elliot, stop that,” he laughs, tickling the little guy’s tummy until he lets go, squealing with laughter and flopping onto your chest.

“Oof, easy there, buddy,” you wheeze, a grin spreading over your face as Elliot nuzzles his face into your neck, still giggling his adorable little baby laugh—fuck.

Loki on one side, tickling your son with a bright smile as he watches him laugh? Elliot flopped on your stomach in footie pjs, squirming and hugging you with his chubby little arms??

This is what people mean when they say things will get better, right?

Loki spews out something in old Norse, a loud, guttural phrase that gets you to gawk at him and Elliot pushes himself up on your chest, the funniest little sound coming from his open mouth—“uh??”

Loki bursts out laughing—your heart flips over in your chest. “I said I love you, minn-mögr, ek elska þik.”

If you’ve never seen a baby’s mouth hang open in pure and utter confusion, you haven’t truly lived.

Unable to control yourself any longer—he’s TOO CUTE—you wrap Elliot in a tight hug and plant a million noisy little kisses to his face, tickling him and making him squeal in delight.

This time it’s Loki’s heart that somersaults.

To think he ever wanted to stop living. Die and miss this.

He’s grateful, he realises when you lift the little giggling baby in the air and swoop him onto Loki’s lap, he’s grateful to himself for still being here.

For still being here to hold his little son to his heart, smiling at him and laughing when he tangles his little hands in his hair again.

For still being here to kiss your beautiful smile and hold your mouth against his, breathing this new life into his soul—you’re still here, too.

Things work out. Things get better.

And the two of you managed to fight and still be here to enjoy it.

Loki’s eyes burn when he breaks away, and he pecks one last kiss to your lips before turning his attention to the little boy bouncing happily on his lap. “I love you,” he repeats, laughing and determined not to let any tears fall on this happy moment in time.

He clears his throat, already grinning. “Now then, darling…”

You grab hold of his hand and lean into him, watching Elliot with a smile. “Now what?”

”Are you going to feed your son?”

His hands slip up your shirt again and you laugh, tipping your head up to kiss him once more…or twenty more—you thought it’d been a strange while since he said something suggestive.

“…or do I need to remove your shirt myself?”

Almost had you worried for a sec.

STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF I met Bill Nye the Science Guy in an airport in Philadelphia, and he was super nice. And really fast, wow.

TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON Smiles, Eyes, and Hair.

A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF Dude, tacos de adobada. I could eat them for every single meal, and tbh I wish I could.

A FOOD YOU HATE Tomatoes. They’re evil unless they’re in salsa.

GUILTY PLEASURE I got back into Wizard101, a game I hadn’t played since I was like 10. I would say it’s all nostalgia but.. is it really? No.

WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN Old t-shirts that are too messed up to be used as regular clothes (either bleach stains or faded or like one little rip in it) and no pants. I’ve tried putting on pj pants but they end up coming off in the middle of the night regardless.

SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS Your girl’s never been in any sort of romantic relationship (i’m the queen of getting friendzoned), but I definitely lean more towards wanting the serious stuff. 

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE I would raise my self confidence levels. I spent almost all of my childhood hating the way my body looked, and I just wish I could tell younger Sarah that the extra weight is okay, and not connected to her value as a person in any way.

ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON Oh, yEAH. I hug people almost as soon as I meet them, and I’m just... very tactile? I have a ton of love to give, and I just.. I have to give it. When I was a kid, my stepmom would get annoyed bc I said ‘i love you’ too much, lmao. I still do, and don’t think I’m gonna stop any time soon.

A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN It’s really any movie that has one of my main muses in it, but I always see myself watching one of the Ant-Man movies. It’s one of my favorite things to put on when I need help finding a reason to smile. Completely underrated!

FAVORITE BOOK Mmmmm... this one’s hard. I love The 5th Wave, since that kinda crazy stuff’s right up my alley. Hunger Games and Twilight were staples growing up, too!

YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE I really wanna go and adopt a pitbull! I’ve wanted to for a while. My dream dog is a Shiba Inu, but since there are so many pitbulls who need loving homes they’re always my first choice.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO I wanna go to each continent in my lifetime, so I still have to hit up Asia, Africa, Austrailia, Antarctica, and South America! First on my list is probably Asia, though!

INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT This whole thing has really taught me how much of an introvert I am, but I think I’m more of an ambivert? I’m not really the kind of person that needs to talk to people in person, but I think that if I didn’t have anybody online to talk to, I’d get a bit restless.

DO YOU SCARE EASILY I get startled easily, but not like... nightmare-terrified? Supernatural horror doesn’t get me, but more realistic stuff sometimes does! But yeah, if you successfully sneak up on me I’ll get the shit scared out of me. Every time.

IPHONE OR ANDROID iPhone! I had a Pixel for a while and loved it, but.. had to go back to my baby.

DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES I don’t play that many, but sometimes yeah! I’ve got my old 3DS and my PS4, and I play sims on my laptop. 

DREAM JOB I really, really want to be something in the medical field. I’ve got a ‘need-to-help-people complex,’ and I just think that’s the best way to do it. Right now I’m settled on nursing, but I’ve got respiratory therapy on as a plan b!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS Get places for me, my parents, and my siblings. Make sure that nobody in my extended family is below the poverty line. Donate what I can, but also make sure that I’m set for as long as I need to be.

FANDOM THAT YOU WERE ONCE A PART OF BUT AREN’T ANY LONGER I’ve stayed in all the RPCs I’ve ever joined, but fandom itself? Probably Grey’s Anatomy? I loved the show up until about S14? Then I kinda just lost interest. I miss a lot of the first / second gen characters (from around the Seattle Grace/Mercy West era) and they’re almost all gone. It’s not that I don’t like the new characters, but I just don’t think I know them as well as I got to know the others? And I was mad that they messed up Maggie Pierce when I gravitated towards her so quickly. So yeah, Grey’s lmao. I’m still Station 19 trash, but.. I miss being a Grey’s stan.

FITZSIMMONS

Jemma! She had lessons (In ballet. When she was eight.) and can’t imagine she’s not exemplary at “modern dance”. Fitz is also terrible, but he freely admits it. 

likes to watch reality tv

It’s Jemma’s guilty pleasure. She knows who the rose went to and which houseguest is fighting with which. She will deny this if anyone asks. Probably.

Fitz gets frustrated at how wrong everyone is doing things (how the bloody hell can you sign up to spend weeks on a desert island and not know to start a bloody fire?) (Don’t get him started on home renovation shows) 

refuses to wear pants when they’re home alone

Neither of them refuses to wear pants (or trousers ;-) when they’re home alone (or with each other), but just try getting Fitz out of his favorite monkey-print PJ bottoms on lazy days off. 

(Jemma bought him two pairs, he doesn’t know she switches them out while he’s showering so she can wash one pair) 

is the jealous / protective one?

 After all they’ve been through? Both. Is it a little smothery from both sides? Sure, but they’re still too fragile to be otherwise. Jemma has perfected her death-glare at anyone (female or male) that tries to monopolize Fitz’s time without including her, and Fitz is still occasionally worried Jemma’s going decided he’s not worth all the pain and can stress out over her being too friendly with other guys--even if he knows she’s not going anywhere. He’s really good at not showing it (she knows anyway). 

Goes all out on the holidays?

Fitz has the best Christmas light display on the block, thank you very much. And on Halloween. (Jemma hasn’t let him get Easter lights...yet). Despite feeling like a bit of a traitor, he also has a hell of a backyard fireworks display on July fourth. 

However, Jemma’s the one who makes sure all their friends are invited over and that the guest room is ready and there’s plenty of food. (and that nobody loses a finger).

is terrible with kids

I can’t imagine either of them being terrible with kids, though I think Fitz would get exhausted with having to deal with a room full of them that weren’t his for any length of time and end up snapping at them. (Jemma would send him to timeout)

Jemma, in a bid to do even more than the huge workload she already shoulders. She knows it’s not good for her...and then does it anyway. 

could sleep for twenty-four hours straight

I think this would be hard for either of them. They both have busy minds, but I can see Jemma going until she dropped, and then actually getting the sleep she needs. (Fitz just can’t- nightmares, anxiety, PTSD, but he’d damn well make sure Jemma was undisturbed while she got her rest). 

never wears matching socks

Fitz wouldn’t, but Jemma always buys him the same brand and style, so there’s never an opportunity, lol. 

punches a tree when they’re angry

Fitz. Sometimes he still loses control of his temper, but he’s working on that. 

gets scared by the toaster

Jemma. She’ll put toast on and then promptly gets distracted by something she’s doing or saying and forget about the toaster until it pops and makes her jump. (But don’t worry. Fitz fixed it so it only goes off gently now and  wirelessly sends an alert to her phone, tablet, or his smartwatch).
