Favorite movie from 01?
[Give me a year and I'll give you my favourite films / recommendations]
Tumblr media
Perhaps "favourite" isn't the best word, perhaps the best word is "biggest obsession", but I have to go with Mulholland Drive. David Lynch is a very special case, you're either into him or you ain't, and arguments either way are of little use. I just want to note 2 things, about Lynch in general and Mulholland in particular:
Contrary to all appearances, it actually makes sense. It may be a weird sense, a dream sense (literally a dream, for like half of this movie), but it's not random.
It doesn't need to make sense to you to be enjoyable. It's perfectly cool to treat it like a trip, and just get lost in the highway sauce. You can revisit it later, and think about it and look up what others have made of it, but it's optional.
Now, these 4 are my favourite 2001 films:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spirited Away needs no introduction, it's widely thought as the best Ghibli film, and I love it to bits.
I'm a complete sucker for Moulin Rouge! and for truth! beauty! freedom! love!, and will accept no criticism at this time.
El espinazo del diablo (The Devil's Backbone) is early Guillermo del Toro, and a sort of prelude to Pan's Labyrinth: it's horror, it's set during the Spanish Civil War, and it takes a stance, along with its own supernatural elements.
And I simply adore Hedwig and the Angry Inch (second musical lol). Does that need an introduction, on 2024 tumblr?
Also of interest:

Monster's Ball is the best from the rest, an incredible drama with Halle Berry's best performance. Very disturbing from start to finish. "Billy Bob Thornton plays a prison guard who begins a relationship with a woman (Halle Berry), unaware that she is the widow of a man (Sean Combs) he assisted in executing."
Ocean's Eleven is the fully on-brand film, it pretty much defined what modern American heist films should be like. No small feat!
Das Experiment: so the Stanford experiment inspired some notoriously bad takes, not least by Zimbardo himself. It also inspired this amazing film. Please don't bother with the pointless American remake. (I owe tumblr a serious post about the Stanford experiment btw, but this is not the place.)
The Brotherhood of the Wolf is surely the wackiest AND darkest action / horror / period / swashbukcling / wuxia / monster film out there. We're in 18th century France, there's the legendary beast of Gévaudan, and cults, and spies, and all of the above.
Il mestiere delle armi (The Profession of Arms) is a shoutout to @wearemercs, it's a realistic war film with landsknechts and condottieri in 16th century Italy, we don't see that every day.
@feyariel I remember that Metropolis was wonderful and I loved it, but not much else about it. Sorry, it's been a while and I have shit for memory!

Monsters, Inc.: not best Pixar, but good Pixar
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: can't leave this one out!
The Man Who Wasn't There: excellent neo-noir by the Cohens
Gosford Park: a whodunit set at an English country house, and the polar opposite of Downton Abbey (which goes at great lengths to convince us that masters deserve their servants' loyalty), ironically written by the same person
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amélie): here begin the films that were adored back then, especially by the artsy/festival crowd, but I haven't seen them since and I've no idea how they've aged
Ghost World: based on the comic book by Daniel Clowes
Waking Life: Linklater, philosophy, rotoscope, Ethan Hawke's there, oh my!
Y tu mamá también: Alfonso Cuarón, road trips, sex, young Diego Luna, young Gael García Bernal, oh my!
Ichi the Killer: by Takashi Miike, based on Hideo Yamamoto's manga. do not watch this if you're not completely sure you wanna watch this lol

WISH sequel idea
Tumblr media
Disney sequels have this reputation of being cheap cash grabs using nostalgia as bait. At least according to the internet. You see, I actually grew up watching the straight to DVD sequels a lot more than the first films and honestly didn't give a crap about the quality then and now. They're just harmless films made for the kids who have seen the first movies. The recent sequels on the other hand, are an entirely different story.
They just don't have the charm the DVD sequels have. With the exception of Rescuers Down Under, the official WDAS sequels, excluding Pixar, that were released in theaters all have this problem where their stories feel unnecessary and are just there to expand an already fine setting.
So, why am I bringing up a Wish sequel? Cuz why not. I like to workshop ideas and sharing them. I don't actually want a sequel, it is too soon for one. But for now, I like to make up one.
Since Wish is an homage to the classical and renaissance periods, why not have a Wish sequel take cues for the DVD films? Without the low quality of course.
As for the premise, it takes place years after the first film. Rosas has became prosperous as ever since Amaya was in charge. The citizens have advanced in many skills as more people came to Rosas while others leave to explore the world outside the kingdom.
Asha is now working as Amaya's personal assistant and takes her job seriously. Amaya assigns Asha to help grant a citizen's wish with her wand but not want to use magic too much as she's still training how to carefully use it, an homage to Aurora using a wand in that Disney Princess short.
After some shenanigans with magic, Asha ponders how Rosas has finally changed for the better but also worries how good change can effect things differently. Like her friends drifting apart once they have their own aspirations to pursue.
One night, a shooting star crashes onto Rosas. Asha thought it was her Star but it was something else. Someone had made a bad wish and that star is determined to grant it.
Fearing for the worse, Asha and Amaya free Magnifico from his mirror prison as he's the only one with knowledge about magic to locate the wisher to stop to them. Of course, Magnifico is disheveled and has lost his magic resulted from him getting trapped in his staff.
So the film is a roadtrip style of story where Asha and Magnifico travel outside of Rosas.
Some shenanigans involve the disheveled Magnifico trying to steal Asha's wand and failing and being miserable for not having magic and being treated like a lowly peasant.
Of course, it's not a modern Disney film with a sympathetic villain. Magnifico teaches Asha how to use her wand as he reminisces about his old past l, a powerless nobody who lost his home.
Turns out their destination was Magnifico's old home. The evil Star attacks them and just when Asha has trusted Magnifico, he betrays her and takes her wand for himself. He abandons her in the ruined village as he swiftly returns to Rosas for revenge.
Asha, and a companion or more that came with her have their darkest hour moment as Asha realizes the bad wish was hers, she did not want her friends to move away especially since Sabino has already passed, admitting that she's selfish for not wanting to be alone again. Her companions comfort her.
Basically the theme is about the acceptance of growing apart from your friends and family as you pursue your dreams. With the film's theme about supporting each other to pursue your aspirations, why not have the sequel be about people with opposing aspirations growing apart.
With a macguffin, they quickly return to Rosas to stop Magnifico. Either he turns to stone or is resealed back into his staff.
Asha confronts the evil star, telling them that she doesn't need them anymore, which the star understands and returns to the aky.
After a brief timeskip, Asha, now an expert in magic departs from Rosas to different kingdoms to find and help those in need.

London is a beautiful place to be born and raised and it was somewhere that Sebastian never thought that he would move on from. He loved the atmosphere and the culture that came with it. It was actually really nice to live in a place that people dreamed of being able to visit in their lifetime.
Speaking of growing up, Sebastian was the middle child of his siblings. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing or bad thing but the best part of growing up with parents like Logan and Sarah, they never made any of their kids feel less worthy than the other. Even with all of the problems that the kids had growing up, they would drop everything without a blink of an eye and be there for their children because unlike their kids, they had both grown up in the system.
As Sebastian began to grow up, he showed a love for cooking in the kitchen. He was always wanting to help his mother out and that meant that he was getting in the way and making a bigger mess than if she had just done things herself, but this is something that bonded the two of them. They each bonded with their parents in different ways as one of his siblings was big into cars and that's why they were so close. But something that all of them shared was the love of board games. They would constantly have a game night weekly so that they could catch up and they always made a commitment to sit down and have family dinner and play games even after leaving the nest.
While getting ready to graduate from school, it was a no brainer that Sebastian was going to go to university for culinary arts. He was destined to become one of the bests just like Gordon Ramsay. But still while in school, he had met Austin and they clicked well with one another. He had watched Austin go through his transition from female to male and he adored Austin the entire way through. There was something about having the courage to do that, which made Sebastian admire him even more.
The two of them began to hang out and feelings quickly developed for Sebastian. He wanted Austin and he didn't know what it was but he felt like he could spend the rest of his life with him. They continued their relationship to university and Sebastian enjoyed it. After a year when Austin had left, Austin had broken up with Sebastian and he was absolutely devastated. He didn't know what to do with himself so he turned to drugs and alcohol to the point where there was no return. He got himself into some trouble and he dropped out of college.
Sebastian disappeared from his family and that's when they began to worry about him. They didn't know what was going on with him and they found him after he had taken too much and he was in the hospital. They called his mother since she was the emergency contact and she was there, crying her eyes out. She begged Sebastian to change his ways so that he didn't end up like this again.
Sebastian moved back into the home and he worked on himself and he went through therapy and took the steps to get healthier. Sebastian ended up going back to school and getting his degree in culinary arts and went to work in a restaurant. He worked there for years before he was offered a position in New York City working in downtown Manhattan. He took the position and moved at the beginning of March 2024.

Good/Great horror movies (If not, movies with a hint of horror) for the month and upcoming Halloween: my recommendations...
The Scream duology (also Scream 4, if you’re into it).
The Alien duology (or trilogy, if you want to watch Alien 3 in its original form or the Assemby Cut... and then there’s the video game Alien: Isolation).
The Terminator duology i.e. the first two Terminator films (you might argue that the second film is less scary, but in the end, it still has some good scares).
The Nightmare Before Elm Street films, from the very first film, 3: Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare... maybe even Jason vs. Freddy, for some crossover action.
Speaking of Jason Voorhees, there’s the first four films of the Friday the 13th series (Friday the 13th, Part 2, Part 3, and The Final Chapter) and VI: Jason Lives.
The very first Halloween (also Halloween II and/or also the recent one, just in time for Halloween Kills).
John Carpenter’s The Thing (also Roger Corman’s The Thing, for a classic take).
   They Live.
The first, second, and fifth Final Destination films.
The Evil Dead trilogy (yes, including Army of Darkness).
George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead (also Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead).
   28 Days Later.
Ringu and its American remake The Ring.
The Japanese Ju-On: The Grudge duology (also The Curse).
   The Babadook.
Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us.
   Audition.
   The Exorcist.
   The Omen.
   Creepshow.
   Brian de Palma’s Carrie.
   Christine.
The Shining (unfaithful to the novel, but if deemed as a standalone set in an alternate universe retelling of the tale, well...)
   Misery.
Frank Darabont’s The Mist (I know it’s a cruel film, but that’s the beauty of it).
   1408: Director’s Cut.
Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers and The Descent.
   [REC]
The very first Paranormal Activity (and believe me, you better watch this on DVD for many alternate endings, none of them pretty).
   Cloverfield.
   10 Cloverfield Lane.
   Edit: The Hellraiser duology.
   Edit: Rosemary’s Baby.
   Edit: Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow.
Edit: The Cabin in the Woods.
   Edit: The Sixth Sense.
   Edit: Train to Busan.
   Edit: Kwaidan.
Edit: The Host by Bong Joon-ho (yes, the same director for Snowpiercer and Parasite).
   Edit: It Follows.
Edit: The IT duology, based on Stephen King’s novel.
   Edit: The Others.
   Edit: The Innocents (1961).
   Edit: Videodrome.
Edit: Event Horizon really sorry that I didn’t include this film early on).
Edit: David Cronenberg’s The Fly (again, sorry for initially not including this).
Edit: Pitch Black, (the first and better The Chronicles of Riddick film, if you’re asking; also, in video game terms, you might want to play the TCoR games Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena).
Edit: The very first Predator (also Predator 2 if you want to continue; Predators even).
Edit: An American Werewolf in London.
Edit: A Tale of Two Sisters.
For some lighthearted scares and/or some fun (in case you can’t handle the fear factors), there are also:
Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors (OG cut AND Director’s Cut will do).
Shaun of the Dead (here’s hoping Last Night in Soho becomes a part of this list in the future).
   Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
The very first Scary Movie; your sequel mileage might vary.
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride (also Frankenweenie, although it’s up to you on whether or not you’re going to watch the short film version or the longer film.
   Gremlins.
The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values
   Edit: Zombieland.
   Edit: Hocus Pocus (1993)
Edit: Disney Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and Monsters University; also, Coco.
   Edit: The Book of Life.
Edit: Ghostbusters (1984; also Ghostbusters II, if you’re into it; oh, and then there’s the 2009 game, if you’re a gamer yourself).
Edit: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
Edit: The Mummy (1999; also The Mummy Returns, if you enjoy that, and then there’s the classic one from 1932).
   Edit: The very first Tremors.
   Edit: Young Frankenstein.
Edit: What We Do in the Shadows (also, the TV series).
Edit: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.
And remember, the scariest thing about horror movies, apart from really good scary movies, is terrible horror movie sequels, especially ones which are really unnecessary. However, do take notes that these are just my personal recommendations, so they may not be up to your taste, all while I might have missed some gems (and also directors). Also, forgive me if this was a very long list of recommendations.

reddie + babysitting
“You’re doing it again.”
Richie reluctantly tore his gaze away from the captivating sight of Eddie’s mid-morning yoga session in the middle of their lounge, to his goddaughter, Rose Hanscom. She was looking at him knowingly, tapping her colouring pencil against her chin. Richie shrugged, feigning innocence.
“What?”
“You’re staring at Uncle Eddie.”
Richie spluttered in protest, lowering his voice so that Eddie wouldn’t overhear them, “no, I’m not. I was...daydreaming.”
“It’s okay,” Rose said understandingly, looking back at her colouring. She poked her tongue out in concentration, her pencil moving rapidly across the page, “I get it. You love him.”
Sometimes, most of the time, Richie really wished Rose was a lot less like her mother. He couldn’t think of anything to say in response so he just shushed her, gesturing for her to keep it down. Rose just raised her eyebrows.
“Why? Is it a secret? Because it’s not a very good one.”
Richie wanted nothing more for this conversation to be over, especially since Eddie was finishing his yoga and was about to join them in the kitchen. He ignored Rose in favour of retrieving one of Eddie’s disgustingly healthy smoothies, handing it to his friend.
“Feeling better, Eds?”
Nodding, Eddie swigged at his smoothie, “it still hurts a little but I’m getting better. It’s doing wonders for my muscle strength.”
“You wanna go grab something to eat?”
Rose’s eyes lit up at the suggestion, chiming in excitedly, “yeah! Please, Uncle Eddie!”
“Yeah, sure, just let me go shower.” he finished his smoothie, high-fiving the young girl as he walked away. As he reached the door to the bathroom, he heard Richie call after him.
“If you need someone to scrub your back, I’m your guy.”
Richie chuckled as Eddie flipped him off before he disappeared for his shower. He could sense Rose watching him and Richie didn’t need to look at her to know she had that smile on her face. Bev’s smile. Fuck it. He groaned, running a hand through his hair.
“Shit, it’s that obvious, huh?”
“Yep.”
"Does Eddie know?” Richie asked, panicked. If Eddie knew it would be the end of his life. He’d have to move out, find a new place, a new group of friends. They’d never see each other again. All because of Richie’s dumb fucking feelings. However, Rose just shook her head.
“Nope. Don’t worry, he’s an idiot, too.”
Richie was too busy basking in his relief to properly focus on what exactly Rose meant.
-
“’And they lived happily ever after. The End.’” Eddie closed the book, smiling down at Rose. She was clutching her teddy bear, looking very much wide awake despite the bedtime story.
“It always ends happily ever after.”
Eddie laughed, folding his arms, “well, yeah. What do you expect?”
Rose shrugged, fiddling with her teddy bear. She silent for a few minutes before she added nonchalantly, “Uncle Richie looked good today. He bought a new shirt...”
"He did,” Eddie nodded in agreement, tucking Rose in gently, “it really brought out his eyes.”
"Mmm. He makes you laugh.”
Eddie lay beside Rose smiling softly, “yeah.”
“Is that why you love him?”
Eddie stared at her for a moment before sighing, shaking his head slowly, “that’s just one of about a million reasons.”
“Why aren’t you together?” Rose asked innocently, blinking her large eyes sweetly. She looked so much like Ben he found it hard to lie to the poor little thing. He shrugged, sitting upright.
“It’s complicated,” Eddie finally said, pressing a kiss to his goddaughter’s hair “but I figure if he wanted to, we’d be together. Get some sleep. Mommy and Daddy will be back tomorrow.”
"Hmm” Rose huffed, throwing his head against her pillow in frustration, “why don’t adults fudging talk to each other?”
She rolled over, facing away from him, making it abundantly clear the conversation was over. Eddie was just confused but didn’t say anything else; he switched on her night light and backed out of the room.
“What are you feeling: Final Destination or Grease 2?” Richie flicked through the options, “but if you want to watch something more Pixar-ish, I won’t be held responsible for my emotions,” when Eddie didn’t respond, Richie peered over the back of the couch, noticing the confused expression on his friend’s face, “what’s up?”
"I like you.”
Richie raised an eyebrow, smirking, “I like you, too, bud. Don’t tell Stan, though. He still thinks he’s my favourite.”
“No,” Eddie rounded the couch and sat beside Richie, picking up the glass of wine waiting for him and taking a large gulp. He was going to need it, “I really like you. I like your dumb shirts and your stupid jokes. I can’t stop thinking about your idiot face and how good you make me feel. I just love your dumbass self so much.”
Richie was silent for a moment as Eddie caught his breath, downing yet more wine. He pushed his glasses into place, taking a careful sip of his own wine. After what felt like an age, he smirked cheekily, “how does you declaring your love for me still sound like an insult?”
“That’s all you have to say?” Eddie lightly shoved Richie, pretending to pout as the idiot guffawed to himself, “fuck you.”
“Hey, if you can’t see how ridiculously in love with you I am, that’s on you,” Richie said, raising his hands in surrender. He was still laughing slightly despite the fact his dreams were coming true right in front of him, “I’ve been informed I wasn’t subtle.”
“We’re both a little at fault here,” Eddie admitted, settling on the sofa next to Richie. A few moments of awkward silence passed, both of them stealing glances at the other person. Finally, Eddie had the nerve to ask the question on both of their minds, “so, now what?”
“Well,” Richie shuffled closer, reaching out to hold Eddie’s hand in his just because he could. He looked down at their hands, smiling, “we’re going to do this properly, Eds. I’m going to take you out on a date. I’m going to treat you exactly how you should be treated.”
Unable to resist, Eddie leaned over and kissed Richie like he’d wanted to ever since he was thirteen. When they finally separated, Richie was a flustered mess much to Eddie’s happiness. He snuggled closer, resting his head on Richie’s shoulder. Grease 2 played on their TV and Richie wound his arm protectively around Eddie’s shoulder. He was the happiest he’d ever been.
-
The following morning, Rose rolled out of bed and grumpily stomped out of her room. She’d vowed to herself last night after Eddie had left that she was going to sit them down and mash their faces together if she had to. When she reached the kitchen, however, she quickly realised it wouldn’t be necessary.
Her godfathers hastily stopped making out but were not quick enough to separate completely, their hands were still clasped. Uncle Eddie was blushing whilst Uncle Richie looked like the cat who got the cream. Rose looked between them before a massive grin spread across her face.
“Thank GOD,” she dramatically fell into a chair, arms spread and head thrown back as she let out a long sigh, “I’m exhausted.”

truth and fantasy in 'luca'
i really, really loved this movie. and i think part of the reason i liked it so much was because of the way it treated truth vs fantasy. (personally whenever truth as a concept is a theme in media i get more attached to it, partly because there's often a moment where i think "oh, yeah, that's right, that's how things are", and for some reason that always manages to choke me up a bit...)
anyway, throughout the movie, luca and alberto have two slightly different desires, or at least two different ways of seeing the same desire. they both want freedom, and freedom is nominally the main theme of the movie (as opposed to truth/fantasy). but their ideas of freedom are different: luca wants freedom from something (the deep, and maybe his overprotective mom) and alberto wants freedom to something (traveling the world - and, you know what, maybe part of that hope is that he finds his dad. either way, his freedom involves a goal rather than running away from anything). and sure, luca's idea of freedom becomes the traveling-the-world dream too, after he meets alberto, but it's really alberto's dream (which becomes more obvious as the story goes on). basically, luca has no destination in mind, only something to escape, and alberto is the other way around.
and that's where i think the idea of truth comes in. it's not really explicitly talked about, but it's so fundamentally important to the film as a whole. primarily this idea shows up in the vespa. their concept of the vespa has absolutely no basis in truth: they start out with only an picture from a poster, and build a fake one out of wood and rope; luca's dreams of the vespa involve floating through the clouds with wild vespas dancing around them; alberto says they're going to travel around the whole earth on the vespa once they get it (an admirable goal, but... no, you're not). the vespa is the embodiment of freedom, but it's rooted in fantasy. there's no truth to it.
then giulia offers luca a different kind of freedom - rather than dream about traveling the world, he can learn about it. and what she gives him, in this beginning of an education, clearly fulfills his longing for something - its not that he stops wanting the vespa, but his desires change in some way. alberto very clearly feels that giulia is threatening the dream he's offered luca, by giving him something more substantial, more reality-based, to think about. (and its interesting that the only thing we really see her 'teach' him is a contradiction of the thing about stars that alberto told him; shes beginning to give him truth rather than fantasy, and luca finds truth more appealing). during this arc, there is a struggle between giulia/truth, and alberto/fantasy. and luca ultimately chooses giulia.
but it doesn't end with that black and white choice. obviously pixar couldn't end the story right there, with alberto gone and the dream of the vespa unrealized, but i think they could have ended it with that being the final choice - stay on land, with giulia, alberto shouldn't have been jealous, fuck him, fuck the parents. they would have padded it, obviously, but i could imagine that being how it ended.
but! that wouldn't have resolved the idea of freedom, and how luca's concept of freedom is still rooted in fantasy at this point! his motivations at this point are still vague. he wants 'school' but barely has a concept of what that is; he wants the vespa journey, but obviously it can't happen the way he's been imagining it, if at all. nothing is true yet.
so. then. everything happens. (and on the subject of truths, the sea monster reveal scene was incredibly important and was literally about replacing fiction with reality.) and then after a bit of denouement, it's explicitly shown what luca's and alberto's ideas of freedom have become. luca isn't running away from anything anymore. that's been resolved. instead he's going to something - hes literally going in search of truth in the form of education, and the freedom that giulia offered him earlier is finally being realized. and alberto isn't running to anything anymore - he's accepted that the vespa isn't going to work out, at least not right then, and he traded it for the fulfillment of luca's freedom. and now he's running from something (while not in as quite a dramatic way): he's given up on his dad and the island, and hes leaving that life to live w giulia's father. he says to luca "you got me off the island... i'm okay". his new freedom is literally just... not being there anymore. he's running towards absolutely nothing. he has no goal in mind. just being free of the false hope - of the fantasy - that one day his dad would come back, is enough. both alberto and luca have traded their idea of freedoms that were rooted in fantasy, for ones that rejected that fantasy for truth.
and the best part is that the point of this theme isn't even that dreams and fantasies are entirely bad! the vespa is the embodiment of the fantasy-freedom, and they still have it, or at least the idea of it. alberto gives luca the drawing! they never cared about the actual vespa - they had it for literally one scene and then alberto literally sold it! what mattered was the dream itself - the drawing, the daydreams, talking about everything they'd do with it once they had it. when they did get it, they almost didn't know what to do with it, because it was never about the physical thing, it was about the concept of freedom through fantasy. which they still have, represented in the drawing which alberto gave luca. the point is simply that to place your desires solely in fantasy, and thereby discard reality, won't lead to fulfillment.
(it's @milkchocolaterache 's fault that i watched the movie, and i wrote all this to her at like 5 in the morning. thanks buddy.)
