Thanks so much to my pal Jeannine Luby for having me as her guest on this week's Uncorked with Funny Wine Girl. We talked ALL things Christmas including grief which has been a big part of my holiday season for the past 23 years. We often forget that in the months proceeding a death there can be a lot of medical and emotional trauma for the family of the sick individual. Only now are we finally learning more about complicated grief and the trauma that exists with grief. I wish everyone out there a safe holiday season, and I wish for everyone to meet themselves where they are and to great themselves with empathy during this season. It's okay to feel your feelings.

Cant stop thinking about this one quote: "Malkin's roommate during away games, who adds that on the road, Malkin seldom went out, instead Skyping with friends and family back home, watching movies in Russian-mostly comedies-or, more commonly, studying English using Rosetta Stone." and how it breaks my heart a little thinking of geno not going out during away games. Like sure these guys sign million dollar contracts and are crazy famous...and geno definitely had gonchar and others around him from home...but he was still barely an adult when he moved to pittsburgh. I think about all the community and strong support network that international students got when i first went to carnegie in 2007, and its so so vastly different. My best friend through college - from kuwait - spoke perfect english but many of the international students didnt. And i remember especially freshman year how hard we all worked to make sure to include everybody. But in college that was easy - everybody living in the dorms. It was like a snowball all you had to do was get a few people, and then walk down the halls and grab everybody to go to the event or party or dinner, even the ones who didnt speak english well and maybe hadnt gotten the invitations. And the international kids all had their own clubs and individual country associations. And my friends still discussed how hard and weird it was studying as an international student because all the extra community support in the world cant fully erase that culture shift. And geno didnt have any of that.

It just sounds so lonely, poor geno. Coming to a new country, being kind of too famous to really integrate into the local community, having a very very small group of team members as the sole social outlet...thats pretty isolating. Its amazing he did fall in love with pittsburgh and the city as much as he says :)
