#Repost @ofgrave.concern ・・・ 18th November 1720, English pirate Captain John Rackham, also known as Calico Jack, due to his choice of calico clothing, is executed for piracy in Port Royal at the age of 37. Calico Jack operated from the Bahamas from 1718-1720, in the last period of the Golden Age of piracy. After serving as a quartermaster on fellow pirate Charles Vane's sloop Ranger in 1718, Rackhman deposed Vane of his captaincy. While in Nassau in 1720 Rackham met and started an affair with Anne Bonny who joined his crew. Aboard Rackham’s ship ‘The Revenge’ also was Mark Read, who it was discovered was Mary Read. Read and Bonny are the only two women known to have been convicted of piracy during the early 18th century. After execution his body was then gibbeted on display on a small strip of land outside the port known ever since as Rackham's Cay. 22nd November 1718, death of the pirate Edward Teach, more famously known as Blackbeard, who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies; in a captured French merchant vessel renamed the Queen Anne's Revenge. Using his thick black beard from where he lit fuses to make his head smoke, he garnered a fearsome appearance, utilizing that appearance alone rather than using force or violence. This tatic worked, for although he and his crew were able to capture numerous vessels they did so with no historical record of torture or murder. On this day, during a ferocious battle, Teach and several of his crew were killed by a small force of sailors led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the British Royal Navy. Upon his death Maynard beheaded Teach, and displayed the head from the front of his ship. 23rd February 1689, birth of the Pirate Captain Samuel Bellamy, better known as "Black Sam". Bellamy, was an English pirate who began his pirate career as a crew member of Captain Benjamin Hornigold, who commanded the Marianne with his first mate, the soon to become famous Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Bellamy’s career as a pirate captain lasted little more than a year, but in that time he and his crew captured at least 53 ships, making him the wealthiest pirate in recorded history. Called "Black Sam" in Cape Cod folklore because he eschewed the fashionable powdered wig in favour of tying back his long black hair with a simple band, Bellamy became known for his mercy and generosity toward those he captured on his raids. This reputation earned him another nickname, the "Prince of Pirates". He likened himself to Robin Hood, with his crew calling themselves ‘Robin Hood's Men’. On the 26th April 1717, Bellamy alongside the majority of the crew were killed when the ship ran aground and capsized during a storm off Cape Cod. Local Cape Cod legend tells that the Whydah was headed for what is now Provincetown Harbor at the tip of Cape Cod, so that Bellamy could visit his love, Maria Hallett – the ‘Witch of Wellfleet’. The Whydah and her treasure eluded discovery for over 260 years until 1984, when the wreck was found becoming the first authenticated pirate shipwreck ever to be discovered. Its secrets still are being uncovered to this day. One of the greatest of these secrets was discovered a little over a year ago, on the 10th February when six skeletons were discovered inside a large concretions (Continued in the comments) #pirate #piratesofthecaribbean #pirates #mutineer_bay #pirateart #piratehistory #jollyroger #skullandcrossbones #historyofpirates #pirateflag #darkhistory #goldenageofpiracy #seadogs #pirateartist #piratestyle #piratelife #piratenation #pirateillustration #pirateship #pirateships #blacksam #whydah #mysteryhistory #piratehistory #historicalstories #shipwreck #shipwrecks #thursdaytales #skeletons #blackbeard https://www.instagram.com/p/CaXh0g-F1hx/?utm_medium=tumblr

29th July 1715, 127 years to the day after the Spanish Armada, ten Spanish treasure galleons are sunk off the Florida coast by a hurricane with the loss of 1,500 men. Known as the ‘1715 Treasure Fleet’, word quickly spreads of the fleet’s sinking, leading to Pirate crews making their way to Florida. Arriving early the following year, Pirates Henry Jennings, Charles Vane, and Black Sam Bellamy, raided the Spanish salvage camp, joined shortly afterwards by Benjamin Hornigold, and Edward England. Both Jennings and Hornigold, despite their rivalry, were leaders and mentors of the Nassau pirate stronghold, named ‘The Republic of Pirates’. Famous for other names in pirate history such as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, Stede Bonnet,'Calico' Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. 31st July 1703, English writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy Daniel Defoe, best known for his pirate novel ‘Robinson Crusoe’, is placed in a pillory for publishing a politically satirical pamphlet. Normally a scene of humiliating punishment, with a crowd throwing rotten eggs and vegetables at the victim with their head and hands secured in stocks; the crowd on this occasion throws flowers in support of his writings. The majority of the pirates mentioned above are known to us through Captain Charles Johnson’s 1724 work, ‘ A General History of the Pyrates’, Johnson was possibly a pseudonym of Daniel Defoe, although whether he did indeed write this work remains disputed. 30th June 1704, execution of English pirate John Quelch, the first pirate to be tried for piracy outside of England under Admiralty Law and thus without a jury. In 1703 he planned to set sail from Marblehead Massachusetts as a lieutenant, under Captain Daniel Plowman, to hunt French and Spanish ships under a letter of marque from Boston Governor Joseph Dudley. When about to sail the crew mutinied, electing Quelch as captain, where they embarked on a year of piracy before returning to Marblehead, and being subsequently caught. On this day Quelch, and the members of his crew found guilty were marched to Scarlet's Wharf in Boston, accompanied by minister Cotton Mather, who gave a sermon beseeching the pirates to repent. In Quelch’s case it was unsuccessful, and he mounted the scaffold, with his hat and bowed to the crowd. All the pirates were buried between the tide marks in Boston harbour. Popular myth suggests that the term for a pirate flag ‘the Jolly Roger’, originates with John Quelch, whose flag it was said was called the ‘Old Roger’. Unfortunately there is no historical evidence for this being the case, and even the testimony of those executed for piracy stated that the flag of St. George was flown from the ship. The legend further states that Quelch’s legendary flag influenced the flags of later pirates Edward Teach (Black Beard), and Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts. 20th June 1627, the beginning of the ‘Turkish Abductions’. Ottoman pirates from Morocco and Algeria, commanded by Dutch pirate Murat Reis begin raids on Icelandic villages, eventually capturing and selling between 400 to 800 people into slavery. On the same day in 1631, the Irish village of Baltimore was also attacked by the same pirates, the largest attack by Barbary pirates on either Ireland or Britain, capturing 107 people into slavery. #pirate #pirates #mutineer_bay #pirateart #piratehistory #darkhistory #goldenageofpiracy #seadogs #pirateartist #piratestyle #piratelife #piratenation #illustrationart #skullandcrossbones #jollyroger #historyofpirates #pirateship #pirateships #piratescove #pirateslifeforyou #pirateking #piratetales #piratestories #barbary #barbarypirates https://www.instagram.com/p/CQRLaRCnA8o/?utm_medium=tumblr

23rd May 1701, three hundred and twenty years ago Captain William Kidd was executed by hanging, after being convicted of piracy and the murder of gunner William Moore. On the 11th December 1695, Kidd was tasked by Richard Coote, 1st Earl of Bellomont, as Governor of New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire to hunt down Pirates such as the Rhode Island Pirate Thomas Tew. Sailing in his ship the ‘Adventure Galley’ Kidd failed to find any pirates during his voyages during 1696 to 1698, whereupon he trod the very fine line between privateering and piracy. His reputation was further tarnished when he killed one of his own crew, who had challenged him on 30th October 1697. After returning to New York, Kidd learned that he was wanted for piracy and was eventually tried and hanged in England on the 23rd May 1701. There is still a historical debate that Kidd remained a privateer and was wrongly convicted as a political scapegoat. What do you think? Pirate or Scapegoat? All art shown is for sale at www.ofgraveconcern.com/crimeandpunishment Where an assortment of other art dedicated to fellow pirates, highwaymen and thieves can also be found. 17th May 1682, birth of Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts, born John Roberts, he raided ships off the Americas and West Africa between 1719 and 1722. One of the most successful pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy, Bartholomew Roberts and his crew seized over 470 prizes in their four year career. He is also known as Black Bart, but this name was never used in his lifetime. Acting as third mate on a slave ship in 1719, the ship was seized by the pirate captain Howell Davis and Roberts was forced reluctantly to join them. Six weeks later Davis was killed, and amazingly the crew voted Roberts as their new captain despite the fact that he still resisted to live as a pirate. Roberts was killed on the 10th February 1722 after being hit in the throat with grapeshot fired from HMS Swallow. The large majority of Robert’s character and appearance appears in Captain Charles Johnson’s 1724, ‘ A General History of the Pyrates’, possibly written by Daniel Defoe, although this remains disputed. Bartholomew Roberts’ entry in the book, is greater than all the other pirates listed, such as Calico Jack Rackham, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, Samuel Bellamy, and many others. The work also gives a detailed description of Robert’s as ... ‘a tall black [meaning of a dark complexion] Man, near forty Years of Age ... of good natural Parts, and personal Bravery, tho' he apply'd them to such wicked Purposes, as made them of no Commendation’, The work also describes Robert’s appearance as dressed in a red waistcoat with scarlet breeches, and a flamingo plume of a scarlet colour. He is also according to legend said to have worn a large diamond cross, which had belonged to the King of Portugal. 28th April 1721, death of female pirate Mary Read, who alongside Anne Bonny are among only a handful of known female pirates in history. Dressed as a boy from childhood, Read joined the pirate crew of Jack Rackham in 1720, during the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’, where she met fellow female pirate Anne Bonny, and revealed that she was a woman. In November of that same year, Rackham’s crew were surprised while drunk, by a ship captained by pirate hunter Jonathan Barnet. While the rest of the crew fled to the hold, Read and Bonny stayed on deck to fight being captured. After being overwhelmed, the crew including Rackham were executed. Both Read and Bonny upon capture received temporary stays of execution due to ‘pleading the belly’, as both claimed to be pregnant. Read died on this day in prison in Jamaica, of a fever likely due to the pregnancy. Bonny’s fate is unknown, as at this point she disappears from history. February 10th 1722, death of Welsh Pirate Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart), born John Roberts, he became the most successful pirate of the golden age by the amount of prizes taken off the Americas and West Africa between 1719 and 1722. During this brief four year career, Bartholomew Roberts and his crew seized over 470 prizes. His pirate life began in 1719 while acting as third mate on board a slave ship, the ship was seized by the pirate captain Howell Davis and Roberts was forced reluctantly to join them. Six weeks later Davis was killed, and amazingly the crew voted Roberts as their new captain despite the fact that he still resisted to live as a pirate. Roberts was killed on this day after being hit in the throat with grapeshot fired from HMS Swallow. In other Pirate news, this week (Wednesday 10th February), six skeletons were discovered in Cape Cod MA, amongst the concretions recovered from the wreck site of the Whydah, captained by pirate Samuel Bellamy, also known as Black Sam. In 2018 Bellamy’s DNA was obtained through a bloodline descendent in England, and work is now being done to obtain the DNA of the skeletons to discover if Black Sam himself is among the six skeletons discovered.
