29th July 1715, 127 years to the day after the Spanish Armada, ten Spanish treasure galleons are sunk off the Florida coast by a hurricane with the loss of 1,500 men. Known as the ‘1715 Treasure Fleet’, word quickly spreads of the fleet’s sinking, leading to Pirate crews making their way to Florida. Arriving early the following year, Pirates Henry Jennings, Charles Vane, and Black Sam Bellamy, raided the Spanish salvage camp, joined shortly afterwards by Benjamin Hornigold, and Edward England. Both Jennings and Hornigold, despite their rivalry, were leaders and mentors of the Nassau pirate stronghold, named ‘The Republic of Pirates’. Famous for other names in pirate history such as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, Stede Bonnet,'Calico' Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. 31st July 1703, English writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy Daniel Defoe, best known for his pirate novel ‘Robinson Crusoe’, is placed in a pillory for publishing a politically satirical pamphlet. Normally a scene of humiliating punishment, with a crowd throwing rotten eggs and vegetables at the victim with their head and hands secured in stocks; the crowd on this occasion throws flowers in support of his writings. The majority of the pirates mentioned above are known to us through Captain Charles Johnson’s 1724 work, ‘ A General History of the Pyrates’, Johnson was possibly a pseudonym of Daniel Defoe, although whether he did indeed write this work remains disputed. 30th June 1704, execution of English pirate John Quelch, the first pirate to be tried for piracy outside of England under Admiralty Law and thus without a jury. In 1703 he planned to set sail from Marblehead Massachusetts as a lieutenant, under Captain Daniel Plowman, to hunt French and Spanish ships under a letter of marque from Boston Governor Joseph Dudley. When about to sail the crew mutinied, electing Quelch as captain, where they embarked on a year of piracy before returning to Marblehead, and being subsequently caught. On this day Quelch, and the members of his crew found guilty were marched to Scarlet's Wharf in Boston, accompanied by minister Cotton Mather, who gave a sermon beseeching the pirates to repent. In Quelch’s case it was unsuccessful, and he mounted the scaffold, with his hat and bowed to the crowd. All the pirates were buried between the tide marks in Boston harbour. Popular myth suggests that the term for a pirate flag ‘the Jolly Roger’, originates with John Quelch, whose flag it was said was called the ‘Old Roger’. Unfortunately there is no historical evidence for this being the case, and even the testimony of those executed for piracy stated that the flag of St. George was flown from the ship. The legend further states that Quelch’s legendary flag influenced the flags of later pirates Edward Teach (Black Beard), and Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts. 20th June 1627, the beginning of the ‘Turkish Abductions’. Ottoman pirates from Morocco and Algeria, commanded by Dutch pirate Murat Reis begin raids on Icelandic villages, eventually capturing and selling between 400 to 800 people into slavery. On the same day in 1631, the Irish village of Baltimore was also attacked by the same pirates, the largest attack by Barbary pirates on either Ireland or Britain, capturing 107 people into slavery. #pirate #pirates #mutineer_bay #pirateart #piratehistory #darkhistory #goldenageofpiracy #seadogs #pirateartist #piratestyle #piratelife #piratenation #illustrationart #skullandcrossbones #jollyroger #historyofpirates #pirateship #pirateships #piratescove #pirateslifeforyou #pirateking #piratetales #piratestories #barbary #barbarypirates https://www.instagram.com/p/CQRLaRCnA8o/?utm_medium=tumblr

23rd May 1701, three hundred and twenty years ago Captain William Kidd was executed by hanging, after being convicted of piracy and the murder of gunner William Moore. On the 11th December 1695, Kidd was tasked by Richard Coote, 1st Earl of Bellomont, as Governor of New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire to hunt down Pirates such as the Rhode Island Pirate Thomas Tew. Sailing in his ship the ‘Adventure Galley’ Kidd failed to find any pirates during his voyages during 1696 to 1698, whereupon he trod the very fine line between privateering and piracy. His reputation was further tarnished when he killed one of his own crew, who had challenged him on 30th October 1697. After returning to New York, Kidd learned that he was wanted for piracy and was eventually tried and hanged in England on the 23rd May 1701. There is still a historical debate that Kidd remained a privateer and was wrongly convicted as a political scapegoat. What do you think? Pirate or Scapegoat? 17th May 1682, birth of Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts, born John Roberts, he raided ships off the Americas and West Africa between 1719 and 1722. One of the most successful pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy, Bartholomew Roberts and his crew seized over 470 prizes in their four year career. He is also known as Black Bart, but this name was never used in his lifetime. Acting as third mate on a slave ship in 1719, the ship was seized by the pirate captain Howell Davis and Roberts was forced reluctantly to join them. Six weeks later Davis was killed, and amazingly the crew voted Roberts as their new captain despite the fact that he still resisted to live as a pirate. Roberts was killed on the 10th February 1722 after being hit in the throat with grapeshot fired from HMS Swallow. The large majority of Robert’s character and appearance appears in Captain Charles Johnson’s 1724, ‘ A General History of the Pyrates’, possibly written by Daniel Defoe, although this remains disputed. Bartholomew Roberts’ entry in the book, is greater than all the other pirates listed, such as Calico Jack Rackham, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, Samuel Bellamy, and many others. The work also gives a detailed description of Robert’s as ... ‘a tall black [meaning of a dark complexion] Man, near forty Years of Age ... of good natural Parts, and personal Bravery, tho' he apply'd them to such wicked Purposes, as made them of no Commendation’, The work also describes Robert’s appearance as dressed in a red waistcoat with scarlet breeches, and a flamingo plume of a scarlet colour. He is also according to legend said to have worn a large diamond cross, which had belonged to the King of Portugal. June 8th 1702, court martial of English Pirate, explorer and naturalist William Dampier. The first person to circumnavigate the world three times, Dampier was also the first Englishman to explore Australia, and to write and collect botanical specimens, and describe the inhabitants. In 1697 he published his discoveries as ‘A New Voyage Round the World’, during a later circumnavigation he also rescued a Scottish privateer and Royal Navy officer named Alexander Selkirk; who had spent four years and four months as a castaway on an uninhabited island, in the South Pacific Ocean. Selkirk is a possible source for the story of Daniel Defoe's ‘Robinson Crusoe’. Serving as Captain on one of Dampier’s ships when Selkirk was rescued, was Woodes Rogers, who later as Governor of the Bahamas, would declare war on the pirates operating from there. On this day Dampier was court martialed for cruelty, after jailing his first lieutenant George Fisher in Brazil, and the death of boatswain John Norwood, for his treatment of the lieutenant he was found guilty and was dismissed from service in the Royal Navy.
