I was entering a remix competition once and couldn't decide on a genre. My lovely wife was the one who suggested "PIRATES," and it changed my life.

Here's the second of many pirate remixes/covers I completed and features my favorite line in all my pirate remixes: "Get off yur dicks, ye scurvy dogs." It should also be mentioned that Gilbert Gottfried's TikTok introduced me to this song.

Band: Oxygen Tank Single: Eat Shorts Kanabo Description: In stark contrast to the absurdity of the title — or in part because of it — this fresh-cooked shibooyah-kei tour de force succeeded, improbably, in propelling Oxygen Tank away from its beginnings in pirate radio into subtle mainstream recognition. The artist behind this unorthodox title, hailing from the Deep Sea, is "usually pretty chill" according to fellow bandmates, and contributes the distinct musical vibe from over there into Oxygen Tank's melting pot oeuvre. Perhaps it was in experimentally straying from that wheelhouse (with the support of said bandmates) in order to "say what needed to" that has made this fresh bop the default BGM of back alleys everywhere.

This was a really enjoyable read with interesting characters and an exciting plot, and i think it would've been a 4/5 stars if not for size and pacing of the narration. The story is about Xiang, daughter of a widowed merchant who runs a business away from the town she had left her daughter in. Xiang's only goal in life is to prove to her mother that she is worth her time and pride, and so she asks her mother to take her along to the city of Canton to teach her the ways of managing the family's buisness. From there she finds herself on a boat chasing the a legend of the dragon fleet's treasure to bring back to her mother in hope of gaining her trust.

What has to be my favorite thing about this book is the legend of the pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao, a formidable pirate that created and commanded a floating army through which she was able to intimidate multiple kingdoms and collect a treasure that became the dream of every sea-farer in the area. And what makes all this much more intriguing is the fact that it was all based on real life historical events. I also enjoyed reading the way the day-to-day life offshore was written especially since i've been dreaming of going to sea for ages now, which really made this whole book very enjoyable to me.

Now one of the main things that bothered me is the fact that the main plot twist was obvious from the beginning of the book. Not a lot of people care about that, but for me i think it would've made everything 90% more interesting if that specific piece of information wasn't very easy to come by from the start. Additionally, there were fewer action scenes than i was expecting from a pirate story, but then again i liked reading life on sea, so it wasn't that bad.

The other characters were incredibly interesting, and i wish that C.B. Lee went into their pasts, and personalities a little bit more. But the thing that got to me the most was how the storyline developed around Zheng Yi Sao. Part of it was my fault because i was craving her to be the morally gray character that forces you to fall in love with her (and COME ON A QUESTIONABLE CARING YET ICE COLD MILF do you really blame me) but then she was written off as a completely self absorbed asshole, who would do anything to protect her treasure.

Regardless of all that, and as i've said before i enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it to all those who do not mind the specific things that affected my reading experience.

Retraction: We at Hikara Walker would like to apologize to Oxygen Tank and its fans for insinuating, due to insufficient research, that their origins lay in pirate radio. Unlicensed radio broadcasts, if set on frequencies close enough to licensed ones, can cause interference which screws with radio reception. This is prevalent in the Splatlands and has been known to disrupt Big Run early warning systems — infamously resulting in the sacking of Inkblot Art Academy during March of last year. Rather, Oxygen Tank aired their first performances over the Ethernet radio channels of the Deep Sea Metro before spreading their reach topside. These transmissions were inadvertently picked up by underground Octarian domes via faulty electronic cables, resulting in repetitious illegal broadcasting therein. If the heavenly melody of the Inkantation sparked the downfall of a regime, then others, including Oxygen Tank's Ral-Hula-Loo (first rec. Museum d'Alfonsino), served to fan the fire by complete happenstance. (Reportedly it's rather embarrassing for them and they'd rather not talk about it. But that's journalism, baby — eat our shorts.)

"Don't worry, captain-" Tsunagu pulls out a knife, and Shinya stiffens up, even through his suffocation via rope.

"Wait-" The knife comes down. Shinya's voice was strangled, raspy, and there are healing bruises around his neck. Tsunagu doesn't like that. Doesn't like that someone other than him had hurt Shinya at all, and, well.

Very convenient that he'd just been cursed, and with the curse, comes the ability to manipulate water, doesn't it? People drown all the time. One or two -or maybe even ten- more bodies in the ocean wouldn't cause anyone to bat an eye. He smiles, and wrenches the knife out of Shinya's flesh.

"We'll have you out of this rope in no time," Tsunagu says to a trying-to-heal corpse. "Don't worry. I'll make it quick."

The bone takes a few seconds, and Tsunagu has to make a hacksaw out of water to do it, along with chipping away at the bone, but eventually- he's holding Shinya's head in his hands. Literally. For a second, he's tempted to see if the body can regrow from this, but… no. Too risky. Maybe another time, when Shinya hasn't been suffocating in the dark for hours and maybe even days.

Another time. Tsunagu opens up the sewing kit he has, and pulls thread through the eye of the needle, making sure to double-layer it. He sews the head back onto the neck, using the stitch made for suturing skin together, pulling on the end to make sure only the barest bits of thread could be seen, and making sure to put the bone back correctly. Shinya's eyelids flutter, after two agonizing, too-long heartbeats, and he snaps awake. "-Tsunagu!"

"Morning, Shinya," Tsunagu says, giving the newly-undead captain his nicest, prettiest, smile. "How was hell?"

"Very warm. Blue fire, you'll like the aesthetics when you go downstairs, don't worry. You'll even blend right in," Shinya shoots back, raising a hand to prod at the unneeded stitches he'd put in. "Why-?"

"I didn't have a collar." Tsunagu reaches a hand out to gently trail across the green-blue thread embedded in Shinya's neck. "And this was the next best thing. They even match my eyes." He hooks a finger around the end, thread not-quite pulled tightly all the way. Tsunagu yanks, relishing at the gasp of pain and the drops of blood staining the thread. He ties it off. "There. Now I'll always be under your skin."

Shinya reaches up. "You don't need thread to do that, Tsunagu." He pulls an odd expression and gingerly moves his head around. The stitches hold. Tsunagu had used the surgical thread, a new invention- it would dissolve into the... stitchee's(?) blood after a few days, carrying a healing potion with it. He'd stolen it off the bodies of the people who had captured Shinya.

Tsunagu doesn't say any of this out loud, but he offers an elbow to Shinya. "Come on," He says. "Let's get out of this basement. And then you're treating me to some food, I spent days looking for you."

Year In Writing Review 2022

I’m apparently making up for the plethora of fics I wrote in 2021, because I only wrote two in 2022 (and short ones, at that! 😂😂😂).  As such, I’m not going to bother filling out the usual questionnaire, but here are links, in case you missed them the first time around:

I also have another Love Pawn fic in the works, that’s a missing scene from the original short story (sexy, tense dinners with the dude who kidnapped you so you can aid him in a bank robbery!), and then a sequel to 2021’s Like a Thief In the Night (about the on-going romance/flirtation of a 1920s’ office worker and the burglar who just happened to save her life when she got locked in a vault overnight <3).  Beyond that, I continue to poke away at Catherine and the Pirate (my age-of-sail, YA romance novel rewrite) and Forward and Reverse (my 1848-1867!AusHun Hetalia fic).  I also still have a couple This Gun For Hire WIPs hanging around, and I should really get around to finishing at least one of them, if only because it’s, like, 80% done, pfft.
