Duran Duran - The Chauffeur 1982

Rio is the second studio album by English band Duran Duran, released in 1982. A new wave album with musical elements such as dance and synth-pop, Rio is mostly composed of fast, upbeat numbers, with a couple slower synthesiser-based ballads. The cover artwork, painted by Patrick Nagel and designed by Malcolm Garrett to resemble 1950s cigar packaging, is considered one of the greatest of all time.

Duran Duran shot music videos for many of the album's tracks, all of which helped spearhead the 1980s MTV revolution. Accompanied by three worldwide hit singles, Rio peaked at number 2 in the UK and remained in the chart for 110 weeks. Initially unsuccessful in the US, the album was remixed by Capitol Records to better match American radio at the time; the remixed album spent 129 weeks on the Billboard chart, reaching number 6.

Rio initially received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, who commended the melodies but disparaged the lyrics. Retrospective reviewers consider Rio timeless and the band's best work, praising its instrumentation and band performances. With the album, Duran Duran were forerunners in the Second British Invasion of the 1980s, helping ensure the success of other English artists throughout the decade, and along with Culture Club and Spandau Ballet created a teen frenzy similar to Beatlemania during the first British Invasion of the 60s. Rio has since made appearances on best-of lists and has been reissued several times.

"The Chauffeur" was created on the spot in the studio. During downtime, Nick Rhodes retreated to an auxiliary studio room with Blauel, their tape operator, and crafted a track using keyboards, synthesisers, the sound of an ice cube cracking and a conversation about nature for extra effects. Simon Le Bon accompanied him with lyrics he'd originally written as poetry in 1978, and adding a melody on an ocarina. The final track features no contributions from the three other band members. An acoustic version (Blue Silver) was recorded without Rhodes, which appeared as a B-side to "Rio". The keyboardist later quipped, "I guess that was my punishment for have created an entirely electronic track."

Witcher Recs - Villains & Bad Guys Edition, part 1

Please enjoy these 23 fic recs featuring Emhyr, Dijkstra, Radovid, Vilgefortz, and the Wild Hunt. I tried to indicate what witcher canon is predominant but sometimes people blend the canons. I'm a voracious reader when my brain lets me read, and I read so many different things. I have many tastes! I haven't done a witcher recs post since 2022 and I have 18 billion more recs in the pipeline that I had collected since like 2021.

With any luck and squeeful motivation I'll share more villain recs in the future.

Few people still alive can say they've met the emperor before his ascension to the Nilfgaardian throne. A young Count Sigismund Dijkstra is one of them. It's just that neither of them knew.

A great little AU/missing scene, tackles the premise of these two meeting shortly after the Law of Surprise in a great way.

There’s so much great Emhyr/Geralt fic out there, and I’m such a fan of this one because of Geralt managing to soothe Emhyr during an anxiety attack.

I can’t get enough of where sevent’s ideas take me. This pairing sounds wild on the surface and it is but I am so fucking compelled by the dynamic, esp when it’s been an accidental bonding.

Eredin’s been coming to Emhyr’s temporary court in Vizima for several months now, about once a fortnight. At first it was to weasel information out of Emhyr, to try and find Cirilla, but the elf quickly learned that Emhyr knew less than the king of the wild hunt himself about his daughter’s whereabouts. And once he realized that, their meetings turned into the pretence of a tentative political alliance to cover up the carnal truth of what really happens when Eredin deigns to visit. Ice magic and masochist Emhyr.

My brain whited out from how brilliant this fic is and I think it changed my brain for the hornier.

He remembers the weight of the crown that used to sit upon his head but he doesn’t remember his own name. Anger and resentment curdles because he cannot recall his mother’s face or the last food he ate before he died but he knows the source his ire. It originates from the woman who chortles when she sits at the table. Her laugh stokes the rage in his disembodied soul.

Philippa tortures Radovid’s soul. Radovid POV. I couldn’t help but play around with the darkfic idea for Phil getting some revenge.

Dijkstra

You Seem To Enjoy The Feeling by galactic_roses. Game canon. Dijkstra/Gaunter. 2800w. Explicit. My favorite tag from the author: dijkstra is an adult he can enter into a sus contract with a sort of demon man if he wants to. This is like the most galaxy brained rare pair idea and can’t stop thinking about it when I consider rare pairs that changed my brain.

Maybe he'd recover, maybe he'd burn his life down around him, because the chaos of such upheaval was worse than the certainty of reprisals, of consequences. It was the kind of thing a skilled spymaster knew how to counteract proactively. For a less valuable player he had less personal means of redress, but for Geralt… Geralt required a personal touch.

''A snow day? I thought only schools did those!'' You declared loudly as you looked around in slight confusion to the rest of the protocol agents, who seemed just as confused as you were in this moment. The announcement had just been made via e-mail; Brimstone and Viper, the two protocol leaders signed the e-mail off to all.

Granted; the snowstorm outdoors was a bit intense, but you were valorant agents! Everyone could agree you dealt with worse on the daily; being shot at, chased by multiple enemies, the omega agents, training, having the worlds faith in your hands....

''Well, I won't say no to a day off!'' Phoenix declared loudly, already off to do god knows what. He gave a slight happy dance as he left the common room, his enthusiasm becoming contagious. a few extra agents had started to leave the common room to head off and do their own things- a day to relax was definitely welcome here.

You looked around to the gradually leaving agents, a few staying back to chat in the common room as they discussed what they could do of their day. You on the other hand, weren't fully sure what to do. Days off often had a minimum of planning for you- so on the spot was a bit of a thought twister for you. You took out your phone, humming a bit as you debated whether or not you should bother someone on this day off.

after a few more moments, you finally tapped on a contact, sending a quick message asking if they were up to do something today. the answer came back rapidly, and a smile grazed your lips.

''meet me outside in 15, wear something warm!''

And here you were now- in a warm winter jacket, fur gloves and a fur hat on your head, trotting behind Sova, who had his bow strapped to his back and a quiver full of arrows to his hip. He was already grinning widely, ready to march into the woods that were near the valorant headquarters. He saw this day off as a small opportunity to hunt- even if it was going to be small prey, he didn't mind much- just happy he could have a moment to get back to his main hobby.

''You have a lot of energy today- I'm not complaining though! I'll put it to good use.'' Sova said with his signature smile, leading the way in his march through the woods. ''Uh oh- should I be worried?'' You asked him jokingly- knowing that he wouldn't actually make you do something you wouldn't want to. Plus, it was Sova we're talking about; the man wouldn't hurt a fly unless tasked to.

'' Don't worry, you know I won't twist your arm on anything.'' He said with a light chuckle, as always his Russian accent coming out on his words as he spoke. You always found it rather charming, it had a unique ring to it you didn't hear often. '' But... If I do catch something, I might ask for a hand to make dinner with it!'' He followed up, smiling.

''Of course you'd ask me that-'' You said, shaking your head; a small smile tugging at your lips. '' But sure, I can figure out dinner if need be.'' You replied casually. He nodded and continued his way through the woods, as if he knew the place well. It was a little worrisome to head into the woods in the middle of a snowstorm- but with Sova? you weren't worried in the slightest. He was initially found in the Russian tundra after all- if someone was to know their way in the woods in the middle of a snowstorm, it was definitely him.

After some time walking- the scenery finally changed a bit. Instead of the usual dead trees and heavy snowfall; there was a bit of a clearing in the woods. Granted it was small- but enough to spot a few wild animals further off on the other side of the clearing. There was an unsuspecting fawn and its mother, slowly walking in the snow. Sova raised his hand, signaling to stop. He crouched, hiding behind a dead bush and snow mound, pulling you down with him.

Though the pull down was a bit clumsy- the man seems to forget his own strength at times, pulling you onto him instead of besides. You were able to not make a noise as you fell onto his side- only a slight, quiet grunt escaping him. He gave you an apologetic look as you moved off him a bit to give him the space he needed to set up his bow. You turned your attention to the fawn, near its adult size but not quite- you would rather look at the woodland creature than face him with your rosy cheeks. Though if he asked- blaming the cold would be the easy excuse.

He was quick to place an arrow on the tense string of his bow, two fingers pulling back the string as he kept his elbow squared- immediately having a concentrated look on his face as he aimed. You couldn't tell whether he was aiming at the fawn or the mother deer- nor could you tell if he was breathing at this point. It was as if he had frozen in time, a face of focus as he held his tensed pose with his bow. His bionic eye slightly adjusted, seeming focused and locked onto his prey- not noticing how you stared at him like he was a Greek sculpture. If you could, you would have taken a picture of the scene.

Then- then sound of the bow string snapping brought you back to reality- the faint whistling of the arrow in the wind before a thud could be heard; a cry of one of the wild deers pierced through the peaceful winter snowfall. You looked back to where the deer were- seeing the fawn laid onto the snow- red staining the pristine white snow near its chest.

''Seems I caught dinner- and for quite a few people!'' Sova declared joyously as he slowly stood from his spot, strapping his bow back in place. He briefly turned his attention back to you, his gloved hand stretching out to you as he smiled. You took his hand- once more pulled by the Russian man who seems to forget his own strength once more.

This time- you were pulled straight into his chest- a small ''oof'' escaping you this time now that there was no deer to scare off. ''Apologies-'' He said immediately- this time speaking a bit embarrassedly as it was the second time he had done the same mistake. You chuckled, shaking your head slightly before speaking up in a teasing tone; ''I'm starting to suspect you're doing it on purpose, Sova!''

He chocked a laugh, his cheeks tinting a bit more as he did. He stepped back, creating a bit of space between the two of you- much to your disappointment. ''I swear its on accident- do you know how light you are, (Y-N)?'' He retorted- though still not noticing his hand holding yours still. You took a small chance- squeezing his hand slightly as you smiled. ''Sova, lets be honest here- you're the one unaware of your own damn strength. Like damn, what did your babushka feed you?!''

Sova finally looked down at your hands- the rosy on his cheeks not leaving. It almost seemed like he spaced out for a moment- as if wondering how long you two had been holding hands at this point. He cleared his throat, ''She uh... made a lot of pelmeni-'' He replied - then turning his attention to the fawn he had brought down. He was desperately trying to distract himself- he could feel the heat on his cheeks and the slight knot in his stomach forming; but not wanting to let it show. 'We are friends, nothing more', he thought to himself, clearing his throat once more.

''I'll uh... get to the deer.... We'll head back after-'' He chocked out, finally letting go of your hand as he left you there, walking alone to the deer to start working on it. You felt the warmth of his palm leave yours, a slight hint of disappointment crossing your face. But you watched him work from your spot- a small flutter crossing your own stomach as you simply observed him work; watching as he carried the animal over his shoulder.

The walk back was quiet- nearly awkward. the two of you obviously had feelings for each other- but neither did a move. Neither dare to break the ice- no matter how thin it was melted at this point. And so; once back at the protocol building, you two parted ways as Sova went to start gutting his catch- you were going to change and shower as you waited for his message when he'd need help to cook.

Your phone buzzed as you laid on your bed, now inside your dorm room inside the valorant protocol, except it wasn't Sova; instead it was Jett- one of the girls you had grown closer to from being on missions with her a lot. She had actually thought you a lot of new cooking methods and tasty recipes as she was a chef before becoming an agent.

Jett: 'Hey (Y-N), Saw you were out with your lover boy earlier 😁got a good catch too!'

The text message made your cheeks heat up a bit, shaking your head slightly.

You: ''Jett we aren't even dating, chill 😒. but yea, he got a fawn'

Jett: ''not dating *Yet* 😇 anywaysssss you guys need help with that? 👀''

You: '' help with making dinner or making a move-?? cause for dinner, yes-''

Jett: 'yes. I'll see y'all in the kitchen 😇'

you: ''Jett no matchmaker istg- and I'm omw, don't you dare do something stupid-''

And with that you finally got up and walked out of your dorm room, heading straight to the protocol's commune kitchen. You had a hunch Jett was going to try something and you didn't know if you should be scared or not.

You entered the kitchen to see the familiar white haired wind radiant and the hunter, both chatting as they seemed to be determining what to do with all the fawn meat. The conversation was casual, mainly Jett throwing suggestions to the tall blonde Russian man on what to make. You snuck in quietly, just observing at first. You waited for a moment to butt in- the moment coming sooner than later.

''Damn that fawn had some thick thighs if that's the size of the cut you made on it-'' Jett exclaimed, looking over the piece of meat Sova was talking about. ''That's what she said-'' You cut in with a giggle- the innuendo making both turn around to stare at you. Jett snorted- and Sova sighed, but still chuckled out softly. ''You couldn't help yourself, could you?'' Sova said as he looked at you, smiling.

''Nope-'' you retorted, but as you were going to follow up, Jett decided to add oil to the fire, playing a dangerous game when it came to your secret-not-so-secret crush on Sova and vice versa. '' I think (Y-N) can't help themselves on a lot of things- like yo-'' and just like that you were slapping a hand over Jett's mouth, glaring at her. ''finish that sentence and I ' wont help myself ' to tell phoenix you think he's hot-'' You threatened- as knowing Phoenix, he would never leave Jett alone even if she didn't tell him directly.

''Do it, I dare you-'' Jett said, muffled by your palm. Now, that wasn't the reply you expected; quite the opposite. You stared at her, blinking a few times before she followed up. ''Also-... look above you, (Y-N)" She added in a teasing tone, backing away instantly to show her grin, mischievous and wide. Something was definitely up- and it wasn't what you expected. And indeed- something was up, and it was a random piece of mistletoe leftover from Christmas she had tossed over your head- held in the air with her wind power.

You face palmed- but also realized her plan. The mistletoe was above you... And Sova. of course. Jett giggled, turning to face the wall as if she was trying to give a minimum of 'privacy'. You turned to Sova, who's face wash rosy at the same realization you had. There was a moment of silence where you both looked at each other without a word, almost as if to quietly ask if the other was okay with it. the few seconds turned to a minutes- and Jett was impatient. ''Just kiss you two, dammit!'' She exclaimed loudly, back still turned.

A bit clumsily, Sova raised a hand to cup your cheek, not breaking eye contact. No words were said as he leaned in, finally placing gentle kiss to your lips. You could feel a slight prickle from his shaved face, nothing bad though, as his lips moved slowly against yours. The man was trying hard to stay gentle and careful- not wanting to do anything you didn't want him doing at the moment.

And to his surprise, he didn't expect you to grab his collar when he went to pull away, holding him in place as you kissed him back, wanting to enjoy it for a moment longer. He let the hand cupping your cheek fall, now sliding down your shoulder, side to finish in the bottom curve of your back, his palm opened wide as he pushed you against him a bit. The simple move made your stomach flutter slightly again- it felt like a rom-com moment but you weren't complaining.

Then finally, where the seconds felt like minutes, you both pulled away, cheeks dusted in pink as you both looked at each other, forgetting completely about Jett and the dinner you were all going to make. His hand remained on your lower back- its warmth soothing you from any embarrassment that should've followed. '' Sova-'' you started but you got interrupted.

''Sasha. Just call me Sasha.'' He said softly, a smile gracing his features as he looked down to you. It was followed with another short moment of silence, as if the two were trying to figure out who should speak first- who should finally break the paper thin ice remaining between the two of you.

''Sasha I-'' ''(Y-N) I need to say-'' and yet again- the two pause, stammering a bit as the two kept accidentally talking over each other. After a few attempts, you both started to laugh- the situation was just becoming comical at this point. ''I like you. A lot.'' Sova finally said, once the giggling died down a bit to finally talk. The words came out naturally- practically stress free even though his feelings for you were finally worded out- finally out and voiced out for you to hear.

''I like you a lot too, Sasha.'' You replied, smiling softly up to the blonde man. Before anything else was said or done- Jett reminded them of her presence now that confessions were finally made. ''Finally! damn I can't believe Phoenix's idea with the mistletoe actually worked-'' Jett said, walking back to the two, laughing as her mischievous grin remained. It had been 3 days since Spot had got rid of your earth for good. Before it was officially gone You and Hobie got items you loved.

You guys would get two different Flats. His would of course be right across from yours.

You and Hobie haven't really been on speaking terms due to the argument on the balcony. He has seen you around on several occasions it is obvious. Yall have the same occupation and live in the same Flat.

He try’s to see you more by playing the electric guitar late,so he can see you before he decides to go to bed . No matter how many times you complain he’s happy to see you .

Hobie happened to be on a mission while you where in your flat.

You weren’t on the mission due to you telling Miguel to remove him off of your partner list.Your Not on his partner list and he’s not yours.

When he heard the news about it he wondered why you did it. You only had one sentence on why you did it.

Right Now it was the afternoon soon it was going to become night . You where on your couch watching living single .

You hear a knock at your door . “Do I really wanna answer the door “ you question yourself.

The person beings to knock louder than the first time .

You take the blanket off your body . You walk to the door in your crop top and comfortable sweatpants.

They knock louder than they both times continue. “I’m coming ok “ you yell to them .You walk to the door , you begin to unlock the door and open it for the person. “What is it” you ask them in a unfriendly manner.

“Hey I can dress! “ you tell her and laugh

She begins to look through your closet , you had no idea what she was going to pick … she’s a fashion wild card .

No outfit she makes will be the same each outfit will be different.

“Ah ha “ she smiles as takes the outfit off the hanger .

“This is the … Outfit , go put it on “ she hands you the outfit- the first outfit

You go put the outfit on , you look in the mirror, it was complimenting your body and your skin. You walk out to show her the outfit.

“Oh yes , you’re wearing that , where some clear heels with that “ she smiles . You search around your room to find the heels. You find them and put the heels on . “Alright I’m finna get dressed and you can do your make up or whatever, than we leaving “ she says .

You do your makeup for a soft and natural look, you didn’t want your face to look like a whole new one . Once y put finished you looked around for a purse to match your outfit . You find the purse you where looking for . your friend is done with everything she wanted to do

Time to head out

You guys made it to the club, at first you didn't want to be there, you were only there because your friend was tired of noticing that you were slouching on the couch.

You walk around the club, chilling in the corner watching people have fun and laugh while your like “What am I doing here “ . Music starts to blast from different genres. Rnb to hip hop to afro beats back to rnb then to Latin Music.

You slowly made your way to the dance floor instead of just standing and looking like a creep. You start to dance and enjoy yourself. Many guys try to flirt with you and others are weird creeps.

The creeps take you to the bathroom, that'd when you put up a fight leaving them unconscious.

You walk out like nothing just happened

You go back to dancing catching an individual's eye. “Who's that,” he asks his friend “I don't know, it's my first time seeing her, “ they tell him.

He starts to become hesitate, did he want to say hi? Or did he wanna risk the fact of never seeing you again?

In that moment courage started to build in his body. He was going to ask you out!

He walked up to you “hola linda mami” (Hi pretty mommy ) .

She looks around trying to see who the random male was taking to :

“Estoy hablando contigo, el único bonito”(I'm talking to you , you the only pretty one) you thought the accent was cute

“Ah gracias. guapo” (Ah , thank you handsome) you respond a slight smile shows up on the face . His eyes where only on you ,

"No hay problema, mami bonita (No problem pretty mommy) He says with a wink, a slight grin shows up on your face

“Cuál es tu nombre” ( what’s your name ) he asks you

You guys move to the dance floor , you start to dance with him and talk . Your arms make it around his neck .

“I would love to also but life right now is complicated” you tell him

“Well my boyfriend, stood my family up twice and kinda disrespected me in the process “ you tell him

“Princess just know i wouldnt ever do that to you“ he says as he gives your hand a kiss.

You get a notifacation of a crime happening at a corner store.

“omg i gotta go , my friend needs me . You tell him .

“That’s um ok , my Friends are doing the same” he says , you guys both chuckle then head different ways.

“I gotta go” you give her a wink so she knows why .

You swing run to your apartment to change into your suit. You change in your suit and sling around to find the criminals.

“Not so fast ” you snatch the money out of the criminals hands. You swing back to the corner store to put the money back in store with a stick note .

“From your lovely friend-spidey” . Your spider senses start to go off as you start to draw the mini spider man . You turn around to see someone with a arrow and sleeping darts .

You start to dodge them one by one until he shoots you in the foot. “Oopsie spidey spidey “ the voice whispers to you . It tosses you over the shoulder, the person walks out leaving the note and the money.

Meanwhile with Hobie

Hobie started to head to your apartment to apologize. He brought some flowered and some chocolate. He climbed through your flats window by picking it with a lock pick .

He sits in your arm chair hoping you wake up , so he can give you the flowers and chocolate. He turns on your bedroom light to see the club outfit on the ground. Your purse was thrown on the bed and your heels where on the side .

He realized your phone was on the charger “you left your phone on the charger “ he mumbles keeping it as a mental note.

He checks your phone to see a notification from a friend saying, “be safe, text me when you get home from saving crime” she says .

Hobie became concerned and confused, what crime was she talking about.

He begin to look around the flat , maybe you where in another room. He checks all the rooms, and the nook and crannies .

You were nowhere to be found.

He takes a break in the couch searching about recent crimes that happened in the area . He found a link talking about “corner store robbery” . He clicks on the link . And scans the article with his eyes , he stops seeing the keyword “Spider” His eyes start to light up , with hope . He read the sentence in his mind

“Superhero Spider Girl , would come to the rescue and return the money “ he begins to smile at it . “ That’s my girl “ he says with a smirk .

Although he was proud you happend to get the money back , he was also worried.

He proceeded to hologram Miguel about the issue . “ Find y/n’s location “ he demanded. They started to try to find it . “We don’t have it “ he says . “Well try harder” he told him . “Look I think she’s missing so if you don’t find her , I will” he told Miguel .

Miguel started to try and find it , yet he couldn’t. Hobie hanged up the hologram. In slight anger , he felt like no one was taking it seriously.

It wasn’t like he could just go to the police and ask them to make a missing person report on you , because they would ask how do you know and what was your evidence .

He started to create a rescue plan , and a way to find the location.

Meanwhile

You wake up ,you feel the back of your body on cushion, you feel tied down . You start to wiggle your legs , chains start to rattle.

“You can stop you know, you can’t escape” The prowler says .

“Oh fr , I couldn’t tell “ you say in a sarcastic tone

“Funny , really funny “ the prowler says .

“I know I’m really good at making jokes “ you tell him .

“So what was the point of you know like , taking me “ you ask the prowler

“You have a nice bounty “ he smiles .

“ Aye “ you joke .

“Don’t you find this serious “ he asks .

“Kinda , but anyways how’s your day” you ask him

The prowler becomes confused but begins to talk about it .

“Well you know I went to the club with my friends because they basically forced me to go.But while I was their I met someone named Y/n.She is really pretty, but I might not see her again “ he told you

You started to giggle at him . “You find that funny “ he asks you . “sí, cariño” (Yes , Honey). You laugh

The prowler becomes confused “Eres tú” (it’s you ) . He questions you , you begin to chuckle .

“si cariño, soy yo” you smile , he begins to take off your spider mask. “Surprise” you say . “Ah Mami” he smiles , before clicking the mask off .

He begins to lower the punching bag and unties the chains from the back. “Hey” you smile at him . “Hey” he says to you . “Do you have like a shirt I can wear , only have the suit” you joke to him. “Don’t worry , I got you “ he smiles and winks .

You and miles head to his apartment, which is where he gives you one of his shirt . You make him turn around and leave his bedroom, while you change .

You leave his bedroom and you see him on the couch watching , Friday . You begin to watch the movie with him , you lay on his chest , he places his hand on your stomach.

“But I got you home though “

do you have any book recs or something you read recently that you really loved? i’ve been in a bit of a slump with my reading and i’d love to pick it back up

Currently I'm working my way through 2666 by Roberto Bolaño. It is very good, very dense, and impossible to even start to explain, one of those novels in a novel in a novel situations, loosely about a city in Mexico, but also a) a love triangle between english professors b) a teacher who grows obsessed with a physics book c) an American reporter sent to Mexico to report on a boxing match d) hundreds of murdered women e) a german writer. It's. It's a lot. It's very good, it's very long, I cannot explain it succinctly.

I also just started Haruki Murakami's Wild Sheep Chase, which. I love Murakami novels but they are probably not for everyone! As a starter book for him I like to recommend Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, as it's less surreal and more grounded than a lot of his novels (and shorter). Killing Commodore, one of his more recent novels, was very fun. And if you're into sort of weird Japanese literature, I highly recommend The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa, a sort of… sci-fi-ish story about a lovely peaceful society who, periodically, have concepts (like "birds") outlawed and thus forgotten by all, or anything by Sayaka Murata, who has what I can only describe as humanity dysphoria and writes fascinating short stories.

After I wrote all this I decided to self-shame and show off my Book Mountain, the pile of books by my nightstand I've accumilated over many, many months and mostly have not yet read:

The Field Guide to the Connecticut River is actually super interesting if, like me, you grew up in New England and never thought of that river over there as an eco system in itself. It has illustrations! Pictures of frogs! Geological maps! Super fun to just page through, makes me wanna go hike and look at ponds.

Mary Beard is a fantastic author and I've loved her other Roman-related books (SPQR and Pompeii), super stoked to take another crack at Emperor of Rome.

Ours is a really well written novel with an interesting idea — in the 19th century a group of mostly escaped slaves form their own secret town hidden by magic and isolated from the rest of the world, and how that both protects and hurts them. I just can't get into it, but eventually I'll finish it.

A Children's Bible is quite short and it was fantastic. A group of rich adults rent a summer home and bring a dozen or so children, who are left to fend for themselves as their parents drink and lie around, all while quietly in the background the rest of the world collapses.

Lies and Weddings was fun! it's by the author of Crazy Rich Asians and is essentially a remix of that, just set in England this time. But if you like that sort of thing, it's a fun, quick read.

Bright Young Women was another really good book, I just recently finished re-reading it. I very much enjoyed Jessica Knoll's first book, Luckiest Girl Alive, she's a very strong POV writer. Bright Young Women is a sort of… fictionalized version of the fallout of the Ted Bundy murders, except the murderer is never named or made out to be sexy or sympathetic or cool. It's more about what comes before and after 'the perpetrator' comes into people's lives. Very, very good book.

Another novel (not pictured, but it's on my bookshelf in my line of sight) I really enjoyed recently is Wellness by Nathan Hill: he wrote The Nix a few years back and that was also great, he has a very light and funny style even as he's tackling like. Grief and trauma. Wellness is basically about a married couple in a rough spot, examining them both, how they came to be who they are, the way your past shapes you even if you don't know it, and who they try to be for one another. Maybe halfway through the story there is a silly little anecdote that later came back and made me cry because it was so lovely and paid off so well. Definitely recommend.

Are you looking to click with a new game and want something genuinely different?

I am always hunting for new titles to reinvigorate that click I feel with video games. Not all video games will click but when they do they can be something truly special. I wanted to go over some of my favorite games I’ve played in recent years that are available on current gen consoles. I’m not covering anyone upcoming, these are titles you can pick up today. Cheaply at that. Several of which are on sale on Steam right now as of writing this.

So. Enough chit chat. Lets’s start with an easy one:

Paradise Killer:

PC Switch PS4/PS5 Xbox

I just finished this one and am in the middle of writing my review on it. Painfully stylish with a killer vaporwave soundtrack this game oozes aesthetic. Kaizen Game Works understood the hauntology assignment and took it to the MAX. You are an investigator trying to solve an immortal god-like council’s murder in a dystopian society. You’ve returned to this gorgeous open world parasite paradise from your exile of 3 million days (about 8219 years)! If you’ve played Outer Wilds this is among that same vein. (And I will caution you, while not hard, the game relies on you wanting to just explore. It will provide hints but it won’t hold your hand.)

This is an Ace Attorney-esqe collectathon mixed with open world and exploration. There is no combat. Both the writing and the world are spectacular. Don’t deny yourself something this wonderful, because it is.

This has quickly risen among my gaming ranks as a favorite and it hits to being as close of a favorite as my number 2 suggestion…

Outer Wilds:

PC Switch PS4/PS5 Xbox

This is perhaps one of my favorite games of all time. I wanted to talk about this second because Outer Wilds has received more of the notoriety it deserves in recent times and I wanted PK to get the main spotlight. Don’t get it twisted though If it wasn’t for UpIsNotJump’s video (<— Spoilers) I would have never realized what I was missing. And I still think a lot of people don’t understand what they’re missing too. It is an absolute masterpiece. And seeing it getting released physically again is a god send. I want people to play this game. (And it’s DLC Echoes of The Eye)

No combat. You are a scientist exploring your local solar system in your spaceship in an open “universe” instead of an open world. The sun explodes every 22 minutes which sends your memories back in time. Again, I will caution you that the game relies on you wanting to explore. It will not direct you.

Eastward:

PC Switch Xbox

Too much exploring. Let’s reel it back with Eastward. A Zelda-like where you control an older man and a little girl with psychic powers in a post apocalyptic world. If you’re looking for those fun pixel games that pack that quirky feel this is it. A bit existential, a great sense of humor, and fantastic writing are all part of the Eastward package. (You startin’ to see a theme here? Ha ha)

All while boasting a seriously killer pixel soundtrack. The original Iron Carbine trailer for the Nintendo Direct had an immediate impact on me as a gamer. I knew this was a game I would fall in love with. Sometimes you just know when something is special. This game is beautifully pixelated and packed with lovingly crafted content. Puzzles are the right amount of challenging and there is so much fun side stuff to do. Including a Dragon Quest-esqe game inside the game! It also received DLC via Eastward Octopia! Which I also love.

Moon: A Remix RPG

I do play games with combat. I swear. Several of these games just don’t have it! (Ha!) This will perhaps be the hardest game to sell to you on this list. I have a soft spot for quirky games like this, but know that this was a PS1 Japanese exclusive game in the 90s. And it sure acts like it. Slow to start, weak tutorial, and doesn’t provide a ton of direction. This game was ported into English for the first time in 2020 and I love it. It is a trial and error experience though.

This cult classic is one of the games that inspired Undertale and when you play it becomes wildly apparent. I dare say it reminds me more of Undertale than its other main inspiration Earthbound. You are a little boy that’s been fallen into his video game and you have to save the souls of monsters the hero has killed using love. (Sound familiar?)

Light hearted and weird this game also has a great sense of humor as it pokes at classic RPG tropes. And that slow intro comes into play providing a unique perspective as you journey through the game befriending people. It won’t be for everyone, I would research this one before sinking the… $18.99 on the purchase. But I think it is worth experiencing if you love Undertale.

I think I’ve yakked enough. If folks like the post I’ll follow up with a part two with a little more genre variety! I wanted to the first post to include my top favorites. So. I hope there’s something in there that invigorates you the way these games did for me.

When I have angst, I like to have it with a happy ending, but I would probably say this fliclette I wrote based on the prompt: "Can you do a Jasercy fic where Jason is trying to comprehend the fact that Percy's gone, preferably death, but it doesn't have to be."

I really like the end of Stuck Between Stations. After putting Stiles and Peter in the Wild Hunt and in time loop, the least I could do was give them a happy ending.

Not hate, but I have gotten weird comments. I usually just ignore if they are just odd, but I have also deleted comments that are boarding on hate.

Do you write smut?

Aside from one HP/Sherlock fic that was co-written with my bestie and that we both abandoned, I don't really do long form crossovers (and that one wasn't crazy anyway). That said, there was a tumblr prompt game years ago, that was for 3 sentence fics and almost every prompt I got was a crazy crossover:

MJN crew (bonus points for including Herc Shipwright). Supernatural hunters.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, the aforementioned abandoned HP/Sherlock fic, but it's been ages. @punchedbymarkesmith and I have kicked around some collab ideas, which I think would both be a blast and also for a potentially niche audience. Maybe 2024 is the year this happens!

All time favourite ship?

Steter is the one I've stuck with the longest, but I do have a few that I will always return to in the same way you might eat a comfort meal.

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Look, I really, really want to finish It's Only Forever. I have like 1, maybe 2 chapters left. But it's been so long and I feel like my writing has changed, and idk. Every year I say I'm going to work on it, and every year I don't... le sigh.

What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm really good at finding a small moment in canon and then diverging from that. I also think I'm good at authentic dialogue and I think I'm pretty good at world building.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Action/fighting. Keeping things short unless it's a drabble/other restrictive format.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I am not fluent enough in any language other than English to do this confidently. Instead, I would write something like:

Stiles cursed at them wildly in Polish.

or

Peter responded in French, then turned back to Stiles and resumed their conversation in English.

First fandom you wrote in?

Gundam Wing. All of my old fic from *cough* 20+ years ago is lost to the annals of time (actually some is still on archived GW 1x2 sites if you look hard enough). And if you are one of like 7 people who remember my username, you can find my Newsies and Harry Potter fic (my next two fandoms) still on ffn. After I got out of a bad relationship that kept me from my own interests, including fandom, I returned with BBC Sherlock fic, which you can still find on AO3 if you scroll to the beginning of my profile.

Favorite fic you've written?

Gosh, I feel like this changes all the time, but I am particularly proud of At This Truth We Have Arrived. I loved exploring certain aspects of Peter's character, and doing a different take on Nogistune Stiles. I was also able to incorporate a lot of different themes and elements into it, as well as get my own closure with Monroe, something that has bugged me since the finale. Plus, I think I was able to accomplish a reveal that would add extra elements if anyone went back and re-read the story (even if I somewhat show my hand if anyone paid attention to the epigraph).

She shakes her head. "Okay. So. For the most part, bitlets come from blacksmiths, like Silvermist and Glit. Frozen sparks, forged frames with growth-plates. Sometimes they come out of hot spots too, but a lot of the hot spots are dead. The Quints fucked around with our species and tried to make it so that Primus, in the living body of Cybertron, was the only being who could generate bitlets. But Predacons are called that because we're all wild-type. Anyhow."

She swallows another drink of the fizz.

"Naturally produced bitlets are produced by spark-merging. Two people love each other very very much, so instead of just fooling around with interface arrays and fields and cables, they actually open their chest plates and merge sparks. Sometimes a new spark splits off the merged sparks during merging and if you don't have a blacksmith around to forge a body you've got problems unless one of you has a gestation tank, which are usually only found in Predacons. I do not have one because it was broken when I was a lot younger. But Soundwave does and with the Matrix involved it seems sometimes like it's always on, too."

This is when she'd be blushing if she wasn't painted black, although if Remix has heat sensors on she can probably still tell.

"In order to support natural carrying and help the carrier grow protoform in the gestation tank, it, uh... well. You need to do a lot of sticky-facing, and the carrier has to use their valve. All of the fluids--which carry CNA--go into the construction of the protoform. That is why people who carry naturally and have multiple partners often have bitlets that look as much like their other lovers, and occasionally even a bit more, than they look like their spark-sire. This is why Improv looks like Jazz a lot and Catfish looks like Nautica and why Soundwave would like us to have one with Roddy participating. This is also why people don't always realise Sparkthief is adopted, because he looks an awful lot like Jazz. Welcome back to the series! I hope that as I write more of these and document my growing thoughts on music & albums, we all come to acknowledge that while you may disagree with me on some takes more than others, we would all best come together to civilly discuss our collective love for the music that we're passionate for.

That said, this is a content warning for graphic imagery, specifically on the cover art for this first album. If you're not a fan of gross bodily organs and stuff, don't worry, neither am I.

Nirvana – In Utero (1993)

I'm kicking off today with me accepting the fact that I'm not a big In Utero guy. I know this album has often seen reappraisal as considered by a great deal of music peeps to be Nirvana's best album, but I'm personally firmly in the Nevermind camp, even though my last revisit of that album wasn't as infatuated. That said, while I wasn't keen on the raw recordings of this album at first, I grew to be more based and accustomed to it in the years since, leading to some damn good enjoyment nonetheless. It's a very good album all the same and I respect the status that it has, especially today.

I'm taking my sweet ass time with Telepath's massive discography of legendary vaporwave & slushwave music, but coming back to this one in particular was a shockingly pleasant surprise. I've always seen this as one of his most meditative albums, but I didn't recall it having actual music much on my first listen. So coming back to this, I can't believe I walked away with so many highlights. This thing is gorgeous; it gives you a ton of memorable short-term melodies and some beautiful deep cuts that run much longer and justifiably so. This might go down as one of my favourite Telepath albums, to be honest, but I still just can't wait to get the rest of his big heavy-hitters out of the way like this one.

Gupi – None (2020)

So after work was a non-starter due to the weather, I headed right back home after lunch and rolled upon this record that I had heard all the way back when it came out. Many were hooked onto this, not just because of what this producer was making, but also because of who he even was. Goes to show you the true, unbridled power of nepotism. Speaking of non-starters, the opening title track was a deeply unpleasant first impression to me, but I was pleasantly surprised (again) that the rest of the record picked right up from there and remained consistently decent throughout, even great in spots towards the end. Bubblegum bass (and subsequently hyperpop) were running completely wild during the days of 100 gecs, so it was only natural for this young talent to bust through with this debut and have me have a decent time with it as well. I just don't look forward to revisiting his duo project with Fraxiom, that one was rough when I heard it, even if his track here was good too. I also really liked the refrain on False Awakening as well.

N.W.A – Straight Outta Compton (1988)

For my 1,312th rating on my second RateYourMusic account, I thought I'd finally tune into one of the most respected and critically acclaimed rap albums of all time, not to mention among the most controversial records of the 80s and good for it too. The first two cuts off this album are iconic, though I've always been more of a Fuck tha Police type of person myself, and after that, Parental Discretion iz Advised and Express Yourself are great listens too. God, this drops off hard though. The last four tracks of the main album were a slog, from their Compton's n the House remix to the closer Quiet on tha Set. Every beat was far too scant & repetitive for my liking, especially at the runtimes they were given and tracks like I Ain't tha 1 especially had some lyrical clunkers that read as childish. Still, this was a fine time with some prime cuts, but just way more underwhelming by the end of it.

Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)

I remember some time last year when I was trying to pull myself out of the rut of music listening burnout, I tuned in to a pair of Arctic Monkeys records with a friend/carer of mine. This excessively long-titled album was one of the two, the other being the excessively short-titled AM. I ended up preferring and even loving AM by comparison, but that doesn't (nor should it) undermine this debut album's accomplishments, especially as it's still very good to this day and has some exceptional highlights coming out of it. I thought to return to it just to have a simple good fuck rock time and I got exactly that. God bless the Arctic Monkeys for giving me exactly what I expected.

Rollergirl! – I Love You, Rollergirl! (2014)

Keats Collective as a label was the birthplace of future funk as a genre, thanks to acts like Saint Pepsi, Macross 82-99, Flamingosis, Lancaster and yes, Rollergirl getting a spotlight all over their formative years. This is currently the last EP Rollergirl has put out after their popular Self-Titled got buzz in the scene, but I'm certainly not as thrilled about this one. Compared to that previous EP, this record lacks a lot of the energy and tempo that I would've hoped to carry over. It felt a lot more homogenised and sterile by comparison, but I still really appreciated bits and pieces, like the opener, the closer (especially) and the part in I Love You by the end where the sample was chopped to sing out the album title. It's good and if you're curious, I wouldn't stray away from it. Like with rollerskates.

I've been meaning to revisit this record for the longest time now and I finally put my foot down to retry it. I really loved this record when I first heard it, but I can't say that I adore it as much as I appreciate it now still. It remains a wonderfully crafted record, but I've never been able to fawn over the title track and its segments until the last one. It's the B-side of this record that almost completely sold me and while it didn't win me all the way over in the end, I was still very happy with what I heard. If you wanna get into progressive rock, this is still one of the greatest places to start.

INTERNET CLUB – DELUXE (2011)

Finally, to conclude the night, I wanted to listen to something very obsure, almost dark while eerie, ominous and mysteriously short. Who better to turn to for that than the one who made ▣世界から解放され▣？This super short, almost 15-minute offering was the first of a strange trilogy of pioneering broken transmission mini-albums and while I strongly admired ▣世界から解放され▣ for what it contributed to the scene, I ended up falling out of that same appreciation for the finale NHK REMINDS YOU TO BOOST YOUR SIGNAL. Returning to this album though was a complete shock to me; despite the rough start, when it got to the title track, I was in complete love with the looping sample and as the rest of the record went on, Robin displays hit after hit with chopped up vaporwave tunes and mystifying glitches. It ended up being my favourite of the three by a very good margin! Obviously, I don't expect this one to click with everybody, but if this intrigues you and you've already dipped your toes into the broken transmission or signalwave subgenres, I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy this one! Except NO MORE MONO, that one was uncomfortable.

Misfits of Science 1.1

"Deep Freeze" People with super-powers stop Military bad guys.

Nifty pilot, this. Fast moving and lots of fun.

The first third introduces to Billy Hayes and Elvin Lincoln, scientists working for a group called Humanidyne, which has links to the Military. Something Billy and Elvin are not too happy about. The new boss at Humanidyne doesn't like their pacifist ways, and the odd bunch of super-powered people they are always trying to help, so he shuts down their department and fires the two guys.

Billy and Elvin are licking their wounds over this, when Billy gets a short and mysterious call from their original boss, who tells them that Humanidyne are mis-treating one of their previous charges/patients: a guy who can freeze anything. So, in the middle third of the movie, our two scientist heroes (one of whom has the power of shrinking to 6 inches tall) contact two previous subjects (each with super-powers, too) and they mount a rescue operation to get their cold-hearted friend, and their previous boss, out of the clutches of the heavily-armed bad guys. Cue: lots of action and rock music.

Final third finds the whole group together for the first time and realising that a huge and very, very dangerous weapon has been built out in the desert. So, since nobody else on the planet can stop it, they work together and save the day.

And, as I said before, it positively zips along. For many reasons.

It's funny. The whole affair is peppered with gags and comedy that works. A minor character (played by Diane Civita) is shown many times and always raises a chuckle. The main characters have an easy going camaraderie (think The A-Team) and their banter is good-natured and easy on the ears.

The guest cast is top notch. Larry Linville, Edward Winter and Kenneth Mars are three of television's more reliable performers. Linville is well-served by the script, Mars makes the most of what he's given and Winter is completely wasted. But it's always good to see him. Winter could have played the Linville role, since he had played characters like that in the past, but it hard to imagine anyone being better than Linville here. He's a hoot.

The main cast are superb. Dean Paul Martin and Kevin Peter Hall make great leads. They have great chemistry and it's fun to watch them and root for them. Courteney Cox is the best of the rest. She's cute and sincere. A lesser actress would not have made the material work.

The story, cleverly, waits a long time before introducing Johnny and Gloria and their super-powers. It relies on humour, good characters and an interesting story get the first third out of the way and then it unveils the super-fast guy who shoots lightening bolts, and the girl who can throw anything - big or small - around with the power of her mind. In this way, the middle-third - which you would expect to flag a bit in a two-hour pilot - is actually cool and fun. An example of great pacing.

The soundtrack is catchy and upbeat. The show's theme music (not heard properly until the end) appears on the score many times as a catchy melody. So, whenever the guys go into action as team you hear this catchy little ditty on the soundtrack from a few seconds. After an hour, it's impossible not to hum along. The big battle at the end is edited to match a great Kim Wilde remix and the climax of this movie is one of my all-time favourites.

With all this goodness going around there are only a few weak spots.

When the pilot stops to devote time to the romances between the characters it gets boring very fast. Luckily these scenes are brief and infrequent.

A+ all the way, from me. Fast moving and lots of fun.
