What breeds of dogs would HOO characters be?

Well I'm going to give you an answer whether you like it or not!

Here's my list of what breeds of dog some of the main Riordan characters would be!

Percy- Labradoodle. Why? He's a water dog with messy hair! He is loyal and friendly!

Annabeth- you probably expected me to say border collie, but Nope! Blonde German Shepherd dog. Smart, strong, athletic...and intimidating.

Jason- Golden retriever. What a good boy! He might have a little wolf in him though. And neither of those have blue eyes, so maybe a little husky too.

Piper- for some reason, I'm thinking either border collie or Australian Shepherd. Beautiful, majestic, fluffy. Long flowing fur. Beautiful eyes, too.

Hazel- Pomeranian. What is my reasoning? Not really sure. Maybe it's the tiny size and floofy hair.

Frank- Not quite sure but maybe a mastiff. He has those vibes.

Leo- Chihuahua. Tiny, associated with Mexico, anxious, yaps at strangers and sometimes family members. Their true beauty is within. It's perfect.

Nico- Cat. He's a cat. A black cat, yes. Will is a cat too but he's orange.

Reyna- Rottweiler. I had a reason but I don't remember it. Enjoy.

Percy Jackson Characters Explained by Dogs

So, after reading this post about how Percy Jackson is actually terrifying, but we (the readers) don't notice it as much because we're always on his side, I commented that certain dogs can explain it more visually. So, I decided to make it into a post (with images). Now, here we are, putting dog photos next to PJO-HoO characters. Here we go:

Percy Jackson = Caucasian Shepherd or Belgian Mallinois

He’s a sweetheart to family and FAMILY ONLY. To everyone else, he will label you as a threat until proven otherwise. (Also, I just realized Percy fits the Mastiff type dogs perfectly, which is what Mrs. O'Leary is).

2. Nico di Angelo = Dalmatian

He’s not seen as violent, but every now and again he will tear someone or something to shreds. Which, coming from a "harmless-looking" individual, makes him creepy. (Ironically, Nico went to Dalmatia in HoH).

3. Jason Grace = Rhodesian Ridgeback

He will stare down and hunt down lions, but is not known for violent outbursts. (I just realized it also fits his "raised by wolves" bit, since the RRs need good socialization to be stable).

4. Annabeth Chase = Border Collie/Dingo

She's highly intelligent, fierce, adaptable, and extremely intimidating when focused on a task (usually involving hunting of some kind). Also, the size difference between Percabeth is an added bonus. (Can you imagine the tiny Dingo with the giant CS curled around it?)

5. Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano = Greyhound

She's dominant, laser-focused, and will chase down her goal, no matter who or what stands in her way.

6. Leo Valdez = Basenji or Nureongi

He's slightly out of place (Basenjis don't bark, but yodel) with a very dark past (Nureongis are only bred for dog meat), but has the personality of a sweetheart with a hidden fire.

7. Hazel Levesque = American Foxhound

She's good around horses, and feels comfortable in both violence and family.

8. Frank Zhang = Dogo Argentino or Aksaray Malaklisi

He doesn’t seem intimidating at first glance, but a closer inspection reveals a strong ferocity that has killed many beasts (also, he's freaking huge).

9. Piper McLean = Calupoh

She's extremely beautiful, which allows her to get away with certain things that would otherwise turn some heads (reference to her charmspeak, as well as her desire for revenge).

10. Thalia Grace = Carolina Dog, Siberian Laika, Canaan Dog, Brazilian Caramel, or Indian Pariah

She's too wild to stay in one spot, but always close by whenever someone needs assistance.

So, yeah, that's what I got so far. I might make some more in the future, but we'll see.

PS: I changed the "were" to "are", since some companies in Korea still breed Nureongis for meat only.

I love my dogs so much giys plz look at them

Mostly River who is my dog, he’s a Australian Shepard and a big idiot I love him. He loves food and always crashes into things. He loves to hug and lay on top of everyone.

A few of my sisters dog Dune who I’m pretty sure is a husky pit bull tho we don’t know since he came from the streets. He’s also sorta a idiot and bites a lot but I love him.

And my moms dog Piper who is mostly a border collie. She’s way too smart for her own good, always anxious and freaks out over little things. She loves to have her family (mostly my mom) and have her brother River with her.

She has an intense and slightly creepy, daily interaction with shadows and light spots on the walls. Today the light and shadows were just right.

Brawlers' Pets Headcanon Dump!! (Some are canon but I just go into detail)

I've left out most of the ones I've covered in depth already, which include the Townsfolk Trio (1, 2, 3, 4,), Buzz and Surge, (1, 2) The Coworkers (not mine originally, but I’m on board!!) and Mortis.

Shelly: Used to have a pet chicken when she was younger that she saved from being slaughtered. The bird followed her around everywhere and lived a full happy life. Lived to an old chicken age ❤

Currently, she has Kit, a lil tiny kitten. She spoils her greatly. Superb pet owner! She trusts only a few people to watch her cat, which includes Primo, Piper, Edgar and Lou. ...I can see Colt being mildly allergic to cats tbh, so he's off the table... (He will either still pet and fawn over Kit and deal with the slight repercussions, or he's one of those folks who refuse to admit that cats are cute in their own way. Can't decide yet!)

Also since Princess Shelly has that Frog gun, she'll probably get a pet frog soon too!

Lou: One secret Sugar Glider named Cane that he lets roam around in the Snowtel against Mr. P's wishes. He's a good pet owner, but sometimes he loses track of the cutie because of the free range he allows her. Shenanigans arise when P feels something shifty is going on. Gale has his back if he's in the know, however. He will say "No, I haven't seen anything strange, Mr. P." to his boss' face while seeing the Sugar Glider descending to Lou from the second floor into his hands.

Once, Lou had to hide Cane inside his machinery for a couple of minutes while P was around. It felt 😵 absolutely awful. Ever since then, he's taken to being more mindful of her. It IS irresponsible to have Cane roaming around in a large place without supervision.

Gale: Pet snake named Twister. He's a decent owner, and would be better if he weren't so overworked. He does make time for him as best as he can. Luckily, if push comes to shove, he's found that if he mentions his lament to see his pet snake around/to fellow pet snake owner Byron, there will either be a personal offer for extra caretaking or Mr. P will be sent a notice encouraging more leeway for his employee.

Mike: a Canary named Canary. The funny/odd thing about Mike is that he CLAIMS to be a grumpy fellow, but there's no supporting evidence of that anywhere! Birds take time and patience to train (personal experience), and Canary is so attached to him, so why u lying, Mike??

Anyway, he does not let anyone handle Canary at all. I think I said before that he would trust Jacky with her, but I changed my mind. There's just no convincing him! He's also a top notch owner because birds don't like loud noises and that's why he keeps Canary under his hard hat.

Belle: a horse named Elodie. The one we see in the GA animation! Elodie is dependable, fierce and used to the fast paced lifestyle Belle puts her through. Elodie gets regular coat brushes, healthy diet, exercise (+ extra when she's brought for a heist).

If anyone else tries to ride her, Elodie will simply not budge... Not unless Belle outright hands her reins to somebody else. A tough horse for a wild gal. (Oh, I've technically covered her, but it's okay.)

Emz: Pet *inhales* OPOSSUM. You can't change my mind 💜💜 Her name is Molly. She found her when Uncle Frank made her take out the trash (because she will learn to do basic household chores) And she came across a lil baby possum trying to climb up a tree nearby. "EW." She said, but it was fuzzy and cute and the ears looked too big for its head.... anyway it took a while to be able to catch the skittish creature. She brought her inside and the rest is history. (She forgot to put the trash in the can. Frank was disappointed, but Ash was way way worse.)

Jessie: Pam and (mostly) Nani said no to a real pet, but ever-crafty Jessie came up with Scrappy! The other Turrets in her Skins are all different robots too with different names and personalities, as I've covered before!

I also like to think that when she's older and lives with Penny (or a different partner/on her own, depending on your preference, but Watter Canon under this roof 😤), she gets a real dog. Border Collie, perhaps. And Penny would probably get a noisy Parrot. Of course, that's wayyy into the future... post Starr Park~

Stu- Frilled-neck Lizard! Since Edgar has a Tarantula, someone needed a lizard. And like. This is just so fitting tbh. I can't explain it. He found the lizard as he was just rolling along one day and picked it up and took him home.

I don't know what's going through Stu's head but he probably named the boy something like Rocket Blast Extravaganza. He takes really great care of him and presses his face against the glass tank to stare at him adoringly. He looked up how to take care of reptiles properly. He Will get another one soon.

In the Venn Diagram of Behavioral specialists and Border collie owners, the small circle of Behavioral specialists is almost entirely in the much larger circle of border collie owners. Aside from this possibly skewing the knowledge of the specialists towards BC behavior, it makes me wonder about eye contact and how that works into the equation in the human dog relationship.

Direct eye contact is repeatedly said to be antagonistic to dogs, but my personal experience tells me it can really vary breed to breed and individual to individual. My border collies have all actively sought out direct eye contact from me with soft intentions and seem to enjoy it from people they know well (to the point where for Moxie, seeking eye contact for support from me is a problem we are working through in agility lol.) Piper (a probable dobe mix) on the other hand, avoids eye contact and will only give hard eyes to strangers on her property and then follow up with an attack if it's maintained. I've worked with dogs in pet classes where even glancing in their eyes can trigger full blown reactivity.

I don't know where I'm going with this, maybe it's just about how weird herding dogs and border collies in particular can be.

Meet K-9 Piper. A seven-year-old border collie, Piper is a Wildlife Control Canine at the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan. His mission is to keep wildlife away from the runways.

Annabeth hummed happily as she walked through the park, one hand entwined with Percy’s, the other holding a grocery bag full of food. They were both visiting Sally on break from classes in New Rome. The weather was perfect, and Annabeth had suggested they go on a picnic. While at first Percy may have thought it a little cheesy, there was no world in which he’d say no to a chance for food and to hang out with her.

Percy was currently ranting about how utterly unfair one of his teachers was, and that since he saved the world he should have a break from essays, but judging by the bright smile that never left his face, Annabeth figured he wasn’t too upset. 

Secretly, Annabeth was glad to be able to listen to her boyfriend complain about school. It was a very welcome change from complaining about the Titan staring them down, or how the prophecy was going to kill one, if not more of them. This was nice, and if she didn’t overthink it, she could even pretend she was a normal teenager for once, out on a date with her wonderful boyfriend. 

“I’ll show you the tricks I use to power through an essay.” She offered, laughing at the way his eyes lit up like she was an angel. She bumped her hips into his gently, snickering when he bumped back. 

Eventually she lead them to a bench that looked like it would serve them fine, and she set the bag down. Barely moments after her hand was out of the loops, Percy had already opened and was digging out their sandwiches, splitting up the bags of chips and opening his soda. 

Taking a seat, Annabeth just sat across from him, resting her chin on her palm as she watched him excitedly dig into the food, relishing how good it was. 

Annabeth was in heaven. This was the something permanent she had been needing. There was something about near death experiences that could really put life into perspective sometimes. 

Before long, the pair of powerful demigods were just like all the other teens out on a date in the park. Sickeningly sweet and cute as they shared their food, playing footsies under the table, laughing a little too loud at jokes that others probably wouldn’t understand.

Checking her watch, Annabeth noted they still had plenty of time till their movie started. Which was good, this day could last forever for all she cared. She may or may not have planned their date today, determined to make it the best it could be. Not that she really expected any plans she made to stay on track when her boyfriend was involved. He was her favorite kind of chaos. 

While she was explaining her new design to Percy, who was being surprisingly attentive today to her explanation, felt her instincts kick into overdrive as something was approaching her quickly. Looking over her shoulder, her hand moved towards the knife in her purse until she saw the approaching attacker. 

An adorable border collie was running at her, tongue wagging as it apparently decided that she would be her new best friend. Or it had smelled the food, but Annabeth was hoping for the prior personally. 

It ran up, and after a brief moment of hesitation to decide whether the dog was friendly or not, it seemed like a ball of friendliness and sunshine and immediately started petting which only seemed to excite the dog more. It barked happily, rubbing all against her and licking here when his snout passed near her. Percy was leaning over the table to get a better look, smiling as he didn’t stop eating his sandwich. Pausing, Annabeth looked between the smiling, panting dog and her boyfriend who was grinning at her, in the middle of taking another bite of food and Annabeth realized there really wasn’t much difference between the two creatures. 

Only a few moments later a pair of dark haired teens came sprinting up, kind of out of breath.”Steam! Get back here!” 

The girl called out, running and stopping a few feet away and looking at her. “I’m so sorry. He was fine, but I think he smelled the food and I swear he’s as bad as my boyfriend with food around and….” 

Annabeth just laughed and cut her off, still petting the dog. “It’s fine, I love dogs. He’s adorable. His name is steam?” She asked, quirking an eyebrow. 

THe girl nodded, smiling slightly. “Inside joke.” 

The boy showed up a few moments later, looking at the dog. “I told you we should have kept him on the leash.” He said, casually throwing an arm around the shoulder of the girl. “We’re lucky he’s a teddy bear, Ashe.” 

Annabeth noticed the girl nestle into the guy’s side slightly. “Please, it’s fine. It’s only like the second time today, Tyler.” She said, scoffing. 

A smile played at Annabeth’s lips, kind of sad Piper wasn’t here to see them. 

Remarkably, Percy had put down his sandwich and was now kneeling next to the dog, petting it as well. “Who’s a good dog.” The dog turned and was suddenly attacking Percy with kisses while Annabeth smile, standing up and brushing some dog hair off her. 

The girl, Ashe, just laughed sheepishly. “Sorry… He sheds. A lot.” 

Annabeth shook her head. “It’s fine. He’s cute, so I’ll forgive him.”

“That’s usually what I say. About both of them.” Ashe offered, before nudging Tyler in the side gently who proceeded to gently tickle her side and make her squirm. 

“Steam! Come on. Stop interrupting their date. We’ll feed you at home.” Tyler said with a whistle, and the dog gave Percy one last lick, turned to nudge Annabeth’s hand one last time and lick her leg, before he trotted back over to his owners. 

They waved goodbye, and Annabeth noticed the pair still didn’t put the dog on a leash. Shaking her head at them, she turned back to see Percy stealing one of her chips. She swatted his hand away, trying to hide her grin at his devilish smirk. 

They chatted for a few more moments, until she noticed Percy had stopped talking. “Wise girl? You’re a little spacey right now. That’s my job…” He teased, a slight hint of worry under his tone.

“We should get a dog.” 

Percy’s eyes widened. “What?”

Annabeth shrugged, rubbing her arm nervously. “Steam was adorable. And kids aren’t… anytime soon. So a pet would be perfect. I’m sure they won’t mind if we take care of it. They owe us after all. I can talk with Reyna…”

Percy shook his head. “They’re a lot of work I hear. Plus we’re both kinda busy… and we have a dog!”

Annabeth rolled her eyes. “O’Leary doesn’t count. He’s a hell hound, and has been sticking to Nico more recently too. I can’t cuddle up with a massive hellhound when I’m watching a movie.”

“I thought that’s why you kept me around.” Percy said with a raised eyebrow. 

Annabeth would never admit if any blush had crossed her cheeks. She just shoved his shoulder lightly. “You are still taking classes or training half the time, plus they’re good for your heart rate so when I’m stressed about Olympus I could…”

Percy just sighed. “You’re serious about this…”

Annabeth looked at him, nodding. If she pouted just a little to help make her point, no one could really blame her after dealing with Percy’s “Baby seal eyes” whenever he wanted something. 

When Annabeth saw Percy reach up and scratch the back of his neck, she knew she had won.

“I guess we can look into it. But no small dogs, it has to be a big one. If it can’t knock me over we’re not getting it.” 

Annabeth rolled her eyes, but nodded. “Deal.” As they cleaned up their mess and started to make their way towards the movies, their conversation may or may not have drifted to what breed they were going to get and idle daydreams of seeing Percy asleep on the couch with a dog across his chest may or may not have kept a smile on her face.
