07. 𝙒𝘼𝙍𝙋

Trauma can completely warp your sense of time. Time can slow right down, speed up or cease to exist. Maybe it’s like how computers go slower or glitch when you’re using lots of power. It’s probably that.

For the final track of ‘Pink Metal’ I wanted it to literally sound like this, slowing down and speeding up just the tiniest amounts at random (the time signature also changes from 6/8 to 4/4 half way thru).

Delayed reactions of grief and loss are also a thing. When something messed up happens you can miss other things that happened as part of it. As you heal from things, other things you had missed or forgotten appear. Like if you put off getting your hair done for a long time and then realise you gotta do your eye brows now, too.

The thing that inspired the whole theme of the record was realising I was stuck in a time loop. Nothing I was doing in life was really that good for me. Even the things that were healthy, I wasn’t doing them in a healthy way. I was addicted to literally everything I did.

Everything was about feeding an addiction rather than doing it because I enjoyed it. Part of this is having ADHD, I have the blessing and curse of having intense focus for things that interest me and no focus at all for things that don’t. The other part was keeping myself in what I thought was a safe space for my mind, a magical land of creativity and fun. But really it was just being stuck in a cycle hiding from things.

I’ve changed so many things in my life this year. I quit smoking, I work out 6 days a week (shout out my new lil muscle tiddies) and I meditate every single day. I’m just working on being a better person than I was the day before, even if it’s just the tiniest bit, every single day.

Thank you to everyone who’s been reading these stories, liking, commenting, sharing and saying nice things in person, too (hey I leave the house now). It’s been really nice to talk in detail about all these things and feel energy back from y’all. I’ve even had realisations about the record I hadn’t even thought of whilst making it. I’m super proud of this record and if people can get anything at all out of it, even just the tiniest bit, it’s done what I’d hoped it would. Everybody have a sweet day today.

02. 𝙃𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙂𝙇𝘼𝙎𝙎

Over half the verses I did for this record were either freestyled or freestyles that were re-written and re-recorded afterwards. ‘Hour Glass’ was a bit of both. I wanted to just hit record and see what would come out of me, get right into the darkness hiding in my subconscious. Vomit up all my negative energy so I can be aware of it, be disgusted by it and then change it. I also purposely left in words that were slurred or even pronounced wrong.

This song is really coming from a very self deprecating and manic place. Listening back to myself saying ‘I’m still alone when we’re alone’ was a pretty rough thing to hear.

The links between manic energy and creativity is something I wish I could explain properly, creating art always feels like a dangerous thing to do to myself. I always feel like it puts me in such a heightened scary place.

The way I talk about time on the record is purposely skewed, there’s references to time on every track. Manic energy and depression has a way of warping time, I never wanted the ‘moment’ the record was set in to be clear.

This beat is so anxious, the kicks are probably my fav I’ve done so far. Part of the production aesthetic I wanted for the record was to make the bass sound as garbage as possible. I just wanted it to sound destroyed. All the bass on the record is at least two layers of instrument and is purposely bit-crushed to shit.

Originally the outro was going to have a feature from my friend Agnes of Hexdebt but our schedules didn’t work out so I just left it instrumental, which is something I never would have done usually. I’ve always loved filling up my records with guests but somehow the absence of other voices started to make sense for this one. The track felt lonely like this, just me singing to myself in my room.
