It’s Halloween at Uva Academy and it’s time for the big Halloween party!

Nemona walked carefully, more so than usual. The custom Iono wig on her head was actually quite bulky, what with the weight of the interactive Magnemite hair clips and the sheer bulk of hair. The sleeves of the jacket were impractically long and she was having difficulty with the high-heeled boots. Plus, the fake jagged teeth she was wearing on top of her normal teeth impeded her ability to speak, even though she wanted SO much to speak, to greet everyone she saw and compliment their costumes.

Wearing this getup, she realized she had no idea how Iono managed to dress like this every single day, and her respect for the Supercharged Streamer increased exponentially.

Violetta found some issues with her Sprigatito costume, though nothing quite as dramatic as Nemona’s struggles. The fuzzy green gloves, replete with pink toe beans, she wore over her hands made it tricky to navigate anything that required fine motor skills. The tail she had clipped onto the belt loop of a pair of green pants created some difficulty with sitting down. The ears were mounted to a headband that kept trying to slide out of place, and putting them back was challenging due to the gloves.

She did look cute, though, she thought as she and Nemona walked by some reflective windows on their way to the courtyard, where an enormous orange-and-black tent was set up for the party. High-energy music, directed by a DJ on stage, was blasting from a row of speakers and a long table was groaning under the weight of an astonishing variety of treats. Other small round tables were placed at the perimeter of the dance floor so people could sit and enjoy those treats. Meanwhile, some students danced to the music, mainly flocks of girls laughing and boogying together. The whole scene was illuminated by what looked like tons of candles and jack o’lanterns, creating an atmospheric glow.

While Violetta beheld the scene in front of her and, with some difficulty, managed to take pictures on her Rotom Phone, Nemona had wobbled off to try to greet people. (She found herself resorting to using text-to-speech on her own Rotom Phone or simply writing things on the screen and showing them to people.) She moved forward into the crowd, deciding to visit the dance floor because the music was sounding really, really good. Matter of fact, wasn’t that a Galarian singer? Maybe that’s why she liked it! Maybe…maybe she’d even start dancing too!

Seated solo at a table in the corner, Arven was just people-watching and fiddling with his long black vampire cape - until he saw her, and he felt his heart flutter like a Vivillon, and he was so glad to see her. There she was, completely uninhibited, swaying and wiggling back and forth, the Sprigatito tail jiggling in time. Laughing, smiling, having so much fun. He swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry, and then gulped down the rest of the cola he had procured at the treat table. The fizzy drink seemed to fit his fizzy feeling. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

But at the same time, he didn’t feel brave enough to go on the dance floor and talk to her, either. So he waited, and waited, until eventually the DJ playing the music took the mic and announced they were going to take a short break so that the results of the costume contest could be announced.

Violetta felt a jolt as she realized she’d completely forgotten to go vote for the costume contest! A ballot box was stationed right next to the snack table. She had been too busy dancing and now it was almost too late! She hustled over to the ballot box and struggled to pick up a slip of paper with her paws.

“Let me help you with that,” Arven said, attempting to put on a deeper and more vaguely foreign accent like how vampires sounded in old movies. Violetta turned and smiled brightly when she recognized him.

He had dyed his hair black with temporary hair dye and the kind assistance of the guy in the next room over. He was wearing pointy - but not sharp - fangs over his teeth and had drawn a little dab of blood at the corner of his mouth. He wore a white button-down shirt and black necktie underneath a black vest, paired with black pants, black shoes and of course that black cape.

Now Violetta got that feeling of Vivillons in her stomach. This look was very, very much doing it for her, she realized suddenly, and she felt she surely must have been blushing. “Thanks!” she squeaked out.

“Tell me,” he said, still using that vampiric affectation. “Which spooky costumes strike your fancy most of all? You may vote for three.”

“Er,” Violetta stammered. “Nemona, of course, I helped her get that wig on and it was a right pain, I think she should win something.” Arven nodded and wrote Nemona’s name on the paper. “And, er, Maria, over there? She’s dressed as her Altaria and I think she looks so lovely. Isn’t she in your class?”

“That she is,” Arven confirmed, writing down the name Maria. “Now for your third, madame?”

Violetta looked at her shoes. “You…You look…really nice…Put your name down…”

“As you please.” And he dutifully wrote his own name, then carefully folded up the paper and dropped it into the ballot box. “Would you like anything to eat? Or to drink?” He then dutifully walked down the long table, piling a plate with everything Violetta requested, and led her over to the table he had been sitting at earlier.

Violetta smiled at the food in front of her, and smiled thinking about how kind Arven was being to her, and then she realized these finger foods were just not going to work with these gloves, so sod it - she took off the gloves and let them flop onto the table, sighing with relief because those gloves were a bit toasty. Arven smiled as she ditched the gloves and dug in to the feast of sweets.

Due to her continued inability to speak properly around the flippers, Nemona passed costume contest announcement duties over to her vice president, an especially eager boy who was dressed as Director Clavell and very much looking the part. Third place went to a student who had sewn his own apron to dress as Saguaro - which meant yes, he had indeed done the sewing inside Saguaro’s classroom! Nemona let out a muffled yet energetic “wooooo!!!” when she was awarded 2nd place in the costume contest. Only second place?! Well, a student in a stunningly accurate MIsdreavus costume took first place, and everyone swore the student somehow simply dematerialized once they won the trophy because no one saw them again for the rest of the evening…

“Well, sorry you didn’t win,” Violetta said quietly, looking at her hands.

“There’s always next year,” Arven answered - and then the two of them laughed, just shared a nice little laugh for a moment.

The DJ returned to their booth, but the vibe of the music had shifted. Gone was the high-energy group-dancing stuff. In its place instead were slow jams designed to bring the couples onto the floor, and some students did oblige. Violetta nervously picked at what was left on her plate, then decided to put her paw gloves back on. Arven felt extremely self-conscious in the mere presence of the music for some reason, as if the DJ was playing it at him. The two of them sat in their awkwardness until the first song ended and was followed by another tender slow jam.

Violetta summoned up the same bravery that allowed her to jump off a cliff in pursuit of the giant Klawf. “Could we go out there?” she asked.

“Us?” Arven asked reflexively, somewhat disbelieving, and when Violetta nodded shyly he realized she was not joking. So he put on that vampiric affectation again. “Why of course, madame. Let us dance.”

They walked to the edge of the dance floor, she turned to face him, he turned to face her, and she put her hands - well, paws - in his. They sort of swayed back and forth, at arm’s length, for a time, feeling things out and trying to find the rhythm. Violetta had literally never done anything like this before. Her old school didn’t hold dances, and she certainly wouldn’t have been allowed to attend them even if they did. She had never so much as tapped a boy on the shoulder, let alone held hands - well, paws - with one. But this felt nice, floaty, kind of like getting cozy in her duvet.

Arven snuck glances at some of the other people on the dance floor to try to understand their technique. He noticed the boys had the girls much closer, hands on the smalls of their backs, and so he courageously copied their style. Violetta felt a jolt of excitement as his hands settled there, brushing up against her tail. She was shorter than him, so she tried her best to place her hands - well, paws - in the middle of his back.

Ooh, much closer now, she thought excitedly as she drank in the scene. He really, really did look quite good in that costume, and that floaty warm feeling was so delicious she never wanted it to end. So they kept on dancing, through all of the slow jams, and through another set of energetic songs meant to close out the night. Closer and closer they got until she was essentially just nestled in his arms, her head resting on his chest, adrift on her own little cloud. Please don’t let this be the last song, I don’t want this to end, she thought…

And yet.

“Hey, you two,” Nemona said cheekily, having blessedly removed her fake teeth so she could be understood once more. “Come on, party’s over. Gotta go.” She sighed and rolled up the ludicrously long sleeves of her jacket. “It’s cleanup time for me.”

“Congrats on winning second place,” Violetta said in spite of the bright red blush burning on her face as she removed herself from Arven’s arms. “I voted for you.”

“Heyyy, thanks, pal!” Nemona clapped her hand on Violetta’s shoulder and then turned to Arven. “Say there, creature of the night. Could you make sure mi amiga gets back to her room okay?” Arven managed to mumble an affirmative response. “Thanks. G’night, you two!”

The walk back to the dorms was quiet. Neither Violetta nor Arven felt they could speak, they were both so nervous. But eventually, they arrived at the doors to the girls’ dorms.

“Well, this is me,” Violetta said as she pointed to the doors with her hand - well, her paw - and then felt an absolute dope for having done so. Of course Arven knows this is the bloody girls’ dorm!

Arven just took in the sight before him, Violetta looking so lovely illuminated by the streetlights dotting the campus paths. For a moment he thought…but no, he couldn’t. Even though he wanted to. Not with the fangs in, anyway. That would be too weird. Instead he said “Goodnight,” this time without the vampiric affectation, and turned to head for the boys’ dorms as Violetta stood frozen to the spot.

She shook her head quickly and managed to open the door, get inside, walk down the corridor and then realize something with a start. “Wait a tick,” she said aloud to no one. “Was he going to kiss me?” And then she grunted in frustration and kicked the air.

The Start of Team Soup (pt. 2)

Ough it's about time I posted this, I've had this ready for forever. Think the E.ternal D.iva fic gave me some burnout, despite how much fun that was to work on. Maybe posting some smaller stuff will get me back into doing bigger art and writing.

Clare slept in late the next day, possibly to see if all of yesterday was true. It was; she was still a Chikorita. After eating a couple berries left out in a bowl and drinking some water in a jar, she headed outside.

She wasn’t expecting to find Giovanni fast asleep right outside her door.

“Uh… wakey, wakey, eggs and bakey…?” She poked Giovanni’s shell a bit.

Suddenly, the Water-type sprung to consciousness into a battle pose. “Whoizit?! Who’s there?!”

“Giovanni, it’s me, Clare.”

“Oh.” With that realization, he relaxed. “Sorry, I was so excited to start rescue team work, I got up super early and came here! I guess I fell asleep. But anyway—“ He got Clare into a loose headlock. “Today, Rescue Team Soup starts its journey to become the best rescue team there is! WE GOT THIS, TEAM!”

“Woo-hoo, yeah,” Clare cheered less enthused, releasing herself. “So, how does this whole rescue team thing work?”

“Well, we need job offers! ...Which we don’t have yet.”

“That makes sense,” she thought. “We just started yesterday…”

“We can check the mailbox! Maybe there’ll be something!” The Squirtle raced over to the mailbox, the Chikorita tagging along behind. Clare hadn’t actually noticed there was a mailbox when she first saw the house; she guessed she was too busy with the complete dilapidation.

There was something inside: a big box with a strap. Giovanni’s eyes sparkled. “YES! A Rescue Team Starter Set! You always get one of these when you start a Rescue Team!” He started to dig around in the box and then tossed a round object to Clare. “Catch!”

Clare caught it with her big leaf. It looked like a badge with a pink center and wings on the sides.

“That’s your Rescue Badge. That shows you’re on a rescue team,” Giovanni explained while he pinned an identical badge onto his scarf. He then held out the box. “This Toolbox will let us hold things we find in dungeons.” He put the berries Butterfree had given them inside, and then pulled out a newspaper. “And then this is a copy of Pokémon News! It has useful info for rescuers.” He shoved the newspaper back into the mailbox. “You can read it later, though.”

“I guess you’re really into rescuers if you know all this off the top of your head.”

“Psh, since I was born! But is there anything else in here…?” A few moments of poking around determined the negative. The Water-type sighed. “Guess not… Rescue jobs usually get sent directly to rescuers, but since we’re so new, I guess—“

Giovanni stopped with the sound of flapping wings and the two turned to see what it was: a Pelipper.

It flew over their heads and landed on the mailbox. It shoved something into the slot with a thunk, and then the bird flew off again. It was Clare’s turn to check the mailbox.

Inside was a single letter.

“Is it a job request?! What’s it say?”

“Keep your shell on, I’m opening it.” Clare started to read the letter aloud.

“BZZ BZZ BZZ! (“Huh?” “That’s how it starts; don’t look at me like that.”) I HEARD ABOUT YOU FROM CATERPIE. PLEASE. WE NEED YOUR HELP. MAGNEMITE IS IN TROUBLE. (“Ohhhhhh, that makes way more sense.”) A STRANGE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE FLOWED THROUGH A DUNGEON AND IT STUCK TOGETHER MAGNEMITE AND MAGNEMITE. THAT ISN’T ENOUGH TO FORM A MAGNETON. IT’S NOT COMPLETE THE WAY IT IS NOW. PLEASE. WE NEED HELP. BZZ BZZ BZZ.

FROM MAGNEMITE’S FRIEND”

Included was a map of where to go. The two didn’t say a word. They just looked at each other… and took off to do the request.

…

Two Magnemite were outside a large rocky cave looking worriedly inside. Hearing approaching Pokémon, they turned.

“OH, YOU ARE HERE. BZBZBZZ!” One of them greeted the rookies. “MY FRIENDS ARE IN THIS CAVERN. THEY SHOULD ON THE SIXTH BASEMENT FLOOR. PLEASE HELP THEM!” After every sentence, electricity jumped between their magnets, making the buzzing sound.

And with that, off the two went.

Clare thought the dungeon wasn’t that bad, but maybe that was because she had a resistance to Electric-types… a luxury Giovanni did not have. Either way, after going through a lot more foes than the Tiny Woods and learning some new moves, they came to their destination. In a dead end were two Magnemites stuck together.

“That must be them. Let’s get them out.” Giovanni led the way out, mainly because he wanted to be as far away from the Electric-Steel types as possible.

The four Magmemite rejoiced once the two that had been stuck together separated.

“OUR BODIES SEPARATED. REJOICE!” One of them cried.

They all cheered, and Giovanni hid behind Clare in case a stray spark shot out.

“BE THANKFUL, YOU TWO.”

“YOU ARE OUR HEROES. THANK YOU.”

“It’s all in a day’s work,” Clare assured them.

The Magnemite shared with Team Soup 500 Poké, Reviver Seed, and a Big Apple, and then left. Giovanni finally relaxed.

“Man, that was so scary… But I’m glad it went so well, with this being our first real mission and all!”

But Clare wasn’t listening. It looked like from behind a rock, a black… thing was glaring at her. It looked lean and muscular, and it was too far away to make out many details.

“Hey Giovanni…” She turned to get his attention, but when she looked back, whatever it was was gone.

“What’s up?”

“...Nothing. Think I was just seeing things.”

Do you have thoughts on who would be on Nikki's pokemon team? I was not quite a tomboy in 1999 but I was totally feral about pokemon and that doesn't really wear off.

Okay so APPARENTLY my memory has been wrong for the last 20 years? Because I stg since high school, I was under the impression that I got my kiwi Gameboy Color and Pokemon Gold for my 12th birthday -- but Pokemon Gold/Silver didn't release in North America until October 2000 which means I couldn't have gotten it until my 13th birthday. :| (And the Zelda Oracle of Seasons I remember getting for Christmas 7th grade wasn't released until mid 2001 which would make it Christmas 8th grade for me !!!)

Time is weird, I guess. Anyway, that means Nikki and her twin Isabel could only be playing Pokemon Original Flavor in 1999. Unfortunate, because I have much less personal experience with Red/Blue but also fortunate because 151 pokemon is a lot less to choose from than the 300+ in gen 2.

Disclaimers: It is impossible to select Nikki's pokemon team without also selecting Isabel's, so you're getting both. Also, I chose these without reading their corresponding American Girl books and without regards to type-matching against the Elite 4. We're going purely off of vibes here.

To start, these girls would've started playing Pokemon between 7-9 (they're 9 on NYE 1999) and while their mom is in the tech field, I don't think they would've dug into version exclusives at that age before selecting their Pokemon games. It'd be more about favorite colors and the pokemon on the box. So, Nikki picks Blue because it's closer to purple and Isabel picks Red because it's closer to pink.

Nikki likes Blastoise on the box and if they've watched any of the anime, she might know Squirtle has some punk attitude which she'll like as a skateboarder and daughter of a grunge band member. Isabel chooses Bulbasaur because she's not super interested in fire. By sheer luck, neither pick the hard mode starter and both skate through the first gym just fine. (Unlike me, haha)

No one raises Magikarp, even after they learn about the Gyarados evolution. Both have Pikachu in their parties, especially if they watch the show. Nikki evolves her Eevee into Flareon to have a fire type. Isabel evolves hers into Vaporeon. You get to pick your fighter after beating the fighting gym leader, if I remember right? As the skateboarder, Nikki chooses HItmanlee, the kicker. Isabel plays tennis and chooses Hitmonchan the puncher.

Isabel is CRUSHED when she learns Vulpix is only in Blue, so Nikki traders her one for her team. She also has Jigglypuff for the pink and cute vibes, and definitely sings the Jigglypuff sleep song when Nikki annoys her. Nikki rounds out her team with a Magnemite -- chosen solely for the vague hoverboard vibes they give off. And Articuno. Neither of them are patient enough to bother with Gyarados, but Nikki WILL catch one of those legendary birds dangit! No matter how many times she has to quit without saving.

In conclusion:

Nikki's team: Squirtle, Pikachu, Magnemite, Hitmonlee, Flareon, Articuno

Isabel's team: Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, Vulpix, Pikachu, Hitmonchan, Vaporeon

And while they might easily be playing on original Gameboys, I'm still assigning them Gameboy Colors. Nikki has it in Grape and Isabel has Berry.

td23 pokemon au teams + explanations

aka, i got bored and messed around on pokemon showdown’s team builder for a bit.

caleb:

caleb was easily the hardest to come up with a team for considering… well, there’s just not much to work with. i started with giving him a milotic since it’s a pretty pokemon, then gave him a gorebyss for the same reason (plus it’s pink), realized they were both water types, and decided a mono water team was as good an idea as any. i tried to stay with as pretty/cute of pokemon as possible, and a lot of pink as well to match his palette.

axel, thankfully, was not a challenge to think of a team for. i looked at pokemon i think would be best fit for an apocalypse- tropius is a food source, swampert for swimming, tyranitar can help with scaling mountains or other landmasses, blaziken is a heat source, salamence can fly, and audino can heal. additionally, all but tropius and audino are also very strong fighters.

nichelle was also surprisingly difficult to think of a team for. mienshao and medicham were both easy picks- elegant fighting types that would absolutely make sense for her to have as an action movie actress. i chose cincinno because i feel like it has that same minimalist prettiness that nichelle has. archeops seems like a weird pick, but i chose it because of its ability, defeatist. reuniclus was chosen because 1.) green and 2.) it could easily protect nichelle. clampearl was chosen partially because of her earrings, but also partially just because i think she’d like taking care of a small and cute pokemon.

i feel like damien probably wouldn’t be that much of a battler, so i gave him a lot of unevolved pokemon. i feel like jolteon would probably have been his first pokemon that he got as an eevee. the steel and electric types are because he’s a science nerd; abra is because i think it would be funny to imagine him holding onto it to teleport away from things (scary girl). also, these ended up matching his palette really well, which i am very happy about.

mk’s team was really fun to build. i wanted a lot of sneaky thief pokemon, so many are dark type. like damien, i don’t think she’d be much of a battler, which is why so many are unevolved. i chose rotom because of her hacking abilities. shellos (east, because it matches her colors better), like giving nichelle an archeops, seems like a weird pick, but i also chose with its ability in mind, sticky hold, which i think would be useful in stealing things from people. i think her having a cute, unassuming pokemon that helps her steal things fits in with her under-the-radar approach as well.

talking about these two together as i tried to make their teams match pretty well. i wanted them to have a mix of evolved and unevolved pokemon, and mainly ice types (because, duh). abomasnow and beartic are both big and threatening looking ice types, sawk and throh aren’t ice type but are matching fighting types that i thought fit well, and bergmite and swinub are little guys. i knew i wanted to give one of them a noctowl as well, and since wayne’s the captain, he ended up getting it.

ripper having a skuntank is probably the most obvious decision for a team imaginable. i wanted to go with mainly poison types for him, particularly nastier ones. pangoro, even though it’s not a poison type, was chosen because i think it matches his aggressive personality very well.

not a ton to say here, honestly. mostly just a lot of basic pokemon for him. rotom because of him being a streamer, and i wanted to give him some flying types since i figured he’d use those a lot in pranks and the like. i also hate emolga so it felt only right to give one of my least favorite pokemon to my one of my least favorite characters.
