ECLIPSE PHOTOS!!!!!

Starting with the good total eclipse photos (from my mom)

And then the partial phase photos (also from my mom)

And some pinhole projections

and finally, the photo my dad got at the end of totality, with the sun just starting to poke out and a star still visible in the sky

Some additional notes about the whole experience, in no particular order

it's amazing how cold it got, like the temp dropped a solid 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit

the thing that no photos I have seen really capture even close to accurately, is how strange the horizon gets, it's sunset in all directions and the whole sky in general looks incredibly unnatural and surreal

the moon's umbra approaching in the seconds before and receding in the seconds after totality is SUPER COOL! looked like storm clouds in those directions

the other partial phase phenomena, were all very cool, the way the shadows changed, the shadow bands floating around the ground in the seconds before and after totality, and the way the colors distorted was something that, had it not been pointed out beforehand, I might have missed. I saw a good video by SmarterEveryDay on youtube that went over them and it was super cool to notice them irl

the fact that staring at the sun for hours straight give you really bad sunburn, and a clear line of where your glasses were on your face (ow)

I was playing with a magnifying glass and just after totality even at the most magnified I could get it, I couldn't feel it at all, and this magnifying glass was able to light fires at full sun

might add more later if I think of them

Additional notes: the experience of just after totality ended was super strange, with the sun being bright enough that it looked like full sunshine, but was still cold was so strange, there was no discernible temperature difference between being in the sun and being in shade.

Still haven't gotten over how strange the world looked in the ~30 or so minutes before totality, it didn't feel like the world had gotten darker so much as it felt like it had gotten its colors muted. it was so strange feeling

4-30-2023... yesterday World Wide Pinhole Photography Day. Weather was crap, rained all day, but my wife and I went out with our coffee, tea and beer cans loaded with various types of papers... There were more failures than not. This is a failure, the Tea can leaked light, and the exposure is off... but you know... it was a good day, I was with my lovely wife and we were doing something that we like doing.. more me that her but she puts up with photography ventures. It is our 22nd year anniversary too... I will do some photoshop and invert & flip the image and post later...

Taking my photo negatives I scanned them into a computer and using photoshop I inverted the image to reveal the proper picture.

Interdisciplinary Work - Painting and Photography

One of the most magical things I've seen in my life was the 2017 eclipse. Each drop of sunlight filtering through the tree leaves turned into a tiny crescent. The realization that each swath of light masked off was a camera-obscura picture of the sun was earth shattering.

I cannot express how much I adore dappled shadows formed by sunlight in paintings and photography and in real life

this delicious post is based on ArshaBodha's youtube video and he is a traditional teacher of Vedanta (non dualism). this video was recommended to me by one of my amazing followers💋

the 5 senses are more limited than you think. the world we "see" is not what the world actually is. it is what the mind perceives which is not the same as the reality of the world.

some examples:

"the sky looks blue, but air is colorless"

when you watch a video, it is actually a series of still images projected on a screen, 30 images per second

when you watch the sunset it seems as if the sun is moving down and "setting" but really "the horizon moves up as the earth turns on its axis"

science proves that "you can only perceive a minute fraction of what actually exists" -> "a dog can sniff and differentiate 50 times more smells than you can. your ears can hear only a narrow range of pitches. and you eyes can only see colors from red to violet."

"beyond those pitches and colors lies a vast range of sound and light that you simply cant perceive. the point is, because the range of your senses is so limited, you cant fully and accurately perceive the world around you. only a tiny part is accessible."

"appearances can be deceiving. its natural to believe that your five senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch give you an accurate representation of the world around you. but the fact is, your powers of perception are extremely limited. experiencing the world through your five senses is like looking through five little pinholes pierced in a heavy blanket covering your head."

the mind, based on the 5 senses, creates an image or representation of the world which is not an accurate representation of the world

the room your in is just a 3d representation of the room produced by the mind

because of how limited the 5 senses are, you arent able to accurately see the world

brain + 5 senses = inaccurate perception

"waking world" is based on senses (mind) and "dreaming world" is based on memories (mind) so both are created by the mind; they are imaginary; not real

if you had no senses, you would not know the difference between being awake and dreaming bc both are unreal

This might not seem like something I would post but the natural phenomenon happening here is that the gaps between leaves are so small that they’re working like pinhole cameras and projecting images of the sun on everything so that they end up looking like polka dots.

Edit: I’ve seen this happen during an eclipse and there were little crescents all over the sidewalk!

I'm aware I'm not the only person to do this but here's a post that was just meant to be me tracking up the description of Gerry's hair to see what is actually going on on that front but this also turned into a few other things that are quite interesting to think about. And I started

I will put this under a cut as it's long, also spoilers

So we first meet Gerry in 004

And he's described as having 'artificially black' hair and he's unshaven, this statement is set in Winter 2012 and is from the period where Mary is haunting Gerry post her death, this also occurs after the events of 012 as the incident in 012 is dated as happening on December 23rd 2011

Then in 012

Yet again, dyed hair, this time he's clean shaven which implies either Gerry tends to shave or he probably at least shaved for the sake of blending in for this incident

(This is also when Gerry had all his tattoos)

, this is also in 2011 and it's when Mary is still around but I'm not sure if she like actually somehow appeared at the hospital since it's never really said like how far Mary could like project herself as a ghost but either way somehow they signed him off to her.

Also to note from 012

Gerry has an expired passport with him, he's traveled a lot this lines up with what Gerry himself says in 111 that he and Mary traveled a lot (Also I personally feel he likely had a feeling he wasn't coming back from this and had that on him for... reasons)

Then in 035 we encounter teenage Gerry in 2002

He's described as thin, his hair is apparently obviously dyed, it's also described as 'greasy'

Also to note, this is where the statement giver implies Gerry is somehow stronger than he looks

Gerry then shows up in 048

He's described as scrawny here, and also described as having 'long black hair' this episode is set in September 2009 which would likely be about a year after Mary's death which is said to have happened in 2008 and in 111 Gerry does say the following

Also in 004 it's stated that Gerry seemingly disappeared after being acquitted

Also apparently someone moved into Pinhole Books in 2014

Also to note 062 where Mary talks to Gertrude and gives her Eric's page is set on the 3rd July 2008 meaning that Mary's death was somewhere after this point (I am going to assume likely not that long after this)

Mary speaks to Eric in 154 which is dated to the 21st July 2008 and also this is where Eric does ask her to track down Gerry and Gertrude has been aware of Gerry's existence for a good while by this point.

Also it's implied that Eric and Gertrude know what Mary was going to do

Another side note 080 is where we have Jurgen's encounter with Gerry which probably would've happened in 2014

And Gerry thinks this was in fact not Leitner

So now we come to 102

This statement was taken in June 2014 and is the source of the 'poorly dyed' description of Gerry's hair, this is the only time where the condition of his hair is really remarked upon other than in 035 where it's described as greasy (Which I personally feel was just as a result of Gerry being a teenager at a time as having greasy hair as a teenager happens to most people) so that was likely a one off moment.

Other references to Gerry's hair being dyed imply it's obviously dyed and an artificial looking black so I have another feeling that his hair looking the way it apparently does here is probably a one off since Gerry has been.... going through it to put it mildly.

And its stated that Gerry passes away a few months after this and in 111 Gerry states and since he says Mary haunted him for five years Gertrude seemingly was the one to seek Gerry out This was likely some point in 2013 (Going off what was calculated by people writing the tma wiki)

Allegedly The Catalogue was burned, or at least Mary's pages were Gertrude however seems to have The Catalogue in 2015 when she is arrested for tresspassing

Gerry was also unaware he was ill until it was too late

In 012 we find out Gerry's death was sometime in late 2015

And Jon finds the following out in 107

From what we have in 107 it's likely Gerry and Gertrude were heading to The Usher Foundation from Chicago but only got as far as Pittsburgh, this is where Gerry passes, Gertrude narrowly avoids arrest for being caught when binding Gerry to the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead and Gertrude travels back to England.

And then The Catalogue falls into Julia and Trevor's hands about a year late 109

(And yes can confirm the Greyhound route referenced by Jon does exist)

So that's the post

Things to Summarise

Gerry is apparently stronger than he looks, he is also canonically pale and thin/scrawny

He's described as having stubble in 004 but not 012 I have a feeling he tends to stay clean shaven but in 004 it's implied he looks like hes not slept for a few days (Likely due to Mary) 004 happened post 012

Gerry has an expired passport with him in 012 likely for identification reasons (I personally feel he had a feeling he might not be coming back)

Gerry was released into Mary's care after the events of 012 but it's not clear if Mary was physically there or not

His hair is obviously dyed, and always described as long. His hair is described as Greasy in 035 when he's a teenager, and Poorly Dyed in 102, 102 is set not long before Gerry died so I have a feeling that's probably part of the reason his hair is like that he's been going through it (tm)

Gertrude very likely knew about Gerry's existence pre 2008, she was asked to find him in July 2008 by Eric, She also spoke to Eric a few weeks after Mary approached her in July 2008 but didn't intervene until 2013

Mary's death was likely some point in Summer 2008, probably in July

Someone moved into Pinhole Books in 2014

Gerry also beat up Jurgen Leitner in 2014

Mary's pages were burned in 2013 but it seems The Catalogue was still usable since Gerry was put into it

Gertrude and Gerry most likely heading to The Usher Foundation before his death They'd been in Chicago and were traveling via Pittsburgh, which is as far as they got before Gerry died, Gertrude never did show up at The Usher Foundation.

Gerry died some point in late 2015, the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead was left behind and eventually vanished from the evidence locker and somehow ended up with Julia and Trevor just under a year later

Explanation: Only those along the narrow track of the Moon's shadow on April 8 saw a total solar eclipse. But most of North America still saw a partial eclipse of the Sun. From Clearwater, Florida, USA this single snapshot captured multiple images of that more widely viewed celestial event without observing the Sun directly. In the shade of a palm tree, criss-crossing fronds are projecting recognizable eclipse images on the ground, pinhole camera style. In Clearwater the maximum eclipse phase was about 53 percent.

Solar Eclipse PSA

Who is excited for the solar eclipse? I'm very much looking forward to it, but also wanted to make a quick PSA!

DO NOT LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE. Looking at the sun can cause SEVERE damage to your eyes in seconds! Your retina has no pain receptors so you will not feel this damage, but it can cause blindness and all kinds of vision problems! Please stay safe!

How does one safely observe the solar eclipse? You can get eclipse glasses: they might be sold out at the moment, and you're going to want to look for ones with an ISO rated solar filter. Anything else is too weak! Even with these eclipse glasses you still shouldn't look at the sun for too long, since your eyes will still need breaks.

The much safer method is looking at the sun indirectly! A pinhole camera can be quickly made from household items like a cereal box or a shoebox. Google how to make one, there's a million tutorials. You could even punch a hole in a piece of paper and hold it over the sidewalk. The important thing is you're looking at the image of the sun shining through the hole, and NOT at the actual sun itself!

The WORST thing you can do tomorrow is pull out your phone and try and take a picture of this eclipse. Phone cameras, video cameras, and pretty much every modern lens is designed to capture light, so it will just end up amplifying the harmful radiation from the sun. It's not safe even if you're wearing eclipse glasses: cameras need their own filters to safely look at the sun! Either film your pinhole camera's projection, OR just google videos of the eclipse. Institutions like NASA have telescopes built for looking at the sun and will be able to get some nice pictures without you being in any danger at all.

On Tuesday I attended the Pinhole camera photography workshop where I was taught ho2 to create my own Pinhole camera out of a small film container.

Using this camera and light-sensitive paper, I was able to create exposures spanning about 12 seconds. Using the college's darkroom, I developed the film to reveal my photo negative.

Ok so yes the eclipse is on Monday so get ready with eclipse safety/info now

Do not look directly at the sun without specialized eclipse glasses. Yes, I know you want to. You will just burn your eyes.

If you are in the path of totality, and at the part where it makes the sky dark, you are less likely to damage your eyes, but you still run the risk because you are looking at the sun. Just try not to look at the sun at all without protection.

If you are not in the path of totality, do not look directly at the sun without eclipse glasses. Even if it’s mostly covered. You’re not gonna see anything and you’re just gonna fuck up your eyes.

Colleges, museums, and other local places often will have events for eclipses. They will often have eclipse glasses for you. If they do not, they will likely have some other safe method of viewing it like sun telescopes.

If you do not have access to any of these, still do not look at the sun. What you can do is make a pinhole in a sheet of paper, angle it at the sun, and it should project an image of the eclipsing sun on a flat surface. This can also be accomplished with making a small hole with your hand, or by looking at the shadows from tree leaves.

NASA will also be broadcasting coverage of the eclipse on their free online streaming service if you want to really get in the vibe.

Just don’t look at the sun guys. Guys. If you’re gonna trust anyone on this trust me. Don’t look directly at the sun without protection.

Artist Research - Nancy Breslin

I was lucky enough to come across Nancy Breslin watching a quick video on an introduction to pinhole camera photography.

Nancy is from Washington, D.C., and works primarily with pinhole and plastic cameras.

I visited her website, https://www.nancybreslin.com/bio.html , to find out more, as I saw her work with amusement parks and wanted to see if there was anything else that she had taken that related to my project.

Her work with taking photos of carousels is so interesting and intricate. In the top middle photo the spinning of the wheel almost looks like a spinning top. The skill and detail that went into that piece must have been massive!

Her attention to detail in nothing short of magnificent. Seeing her work and her interest in the spinning objects inspires me to keep working with my subject matter.

Pinhole photography is such an interesting process to work with, and Breslin's pieces are a testament to how beautiful the images produced can be.
