i used to go camping in norfolk every year and we made a den in the woods by machete-ing a pathway out and i drew a map of it designating areas for a kitchen, living room etc. and then all the other kids on the campsite discovered it and then we got kicked out of our own den and a kid called sam stole our pringles and threatened us with a butter knife so we had to leave

‘Ahh, I heard about that yesterday!’

Hey guys! I hope that you’re well!

So today, I’m really excited to be talking to you about the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon which I learnt about from this video by Pimbolammy and having researched it on the interwebs, I find it absolutely fascinating :D

It’s essentially the phenomenon that explains why it feels like once you hear about something interesting, it then feels like it crops up everywhere. This for us, tends to be immensely cool because then it feels like you’ve learnt something new and it’s actually something which you can see and recognise in more than one place in your life and this then leads you to feeling that little sense of accomplishment. Or maybe that’s just me ahaha.

Anyways, this has been scientifically explained through the way that our brains are wired and this is mainly through its capability of noticing patterns. This is really useful for us generally in life because of the fact that it helps us learn things through being able to notice patterns and therefore, noticing chains of events makes us feel like we’re accomplishing something in noticing that trend.

However this isn’t the only thing that contributes to this phenomenon. The second is a thing called selective attention and is an unconscious process that leads you towards looking out for this specific new information that you’ve acquired and explains why there are many, many coincidences that happen on a daily basis but why you only tend to take note of those few. This is often then followed by a confirmation bias that makes you believe that somehow, overnight, what you’ve found out has somehow acquired an omnipresence in your life and will now be found everywhere. Amazing stuff, amiright? :D

This is generally brought about by the fact that we as humans do love to find patterns and coincidences rather than accepting the fact that there’s always a possibility much larger than you might expect that can lead an event to happen. This could be, for example, when a friend of yours calls you when you were thinking about them - rare but probably more possible than you’d think :)

NEW COOL YOUTUBERS ALERT

Hey guys! I hope that you’re well!

So today, I want to introduce you to a couple of YouTubers who I’ve found recently, the first of them is called Pimbolammy and here are a few reasons why I’ve come to love her videos!

She does thoughtful videos but also combines them with randomness and cool facts which makes it very interesting to watch because you can both empathise and also learn something new. For example this video here on Mental Health was both something that you could understand if you personally suffer from a mental illness but she also talked about appreciating the little things and the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon which I’m going to be doing a post about sooon because it’s so cool by itself. What I love is that she’s always also very thankful in her videos and isn’t afraid about just doing her which I think is awesome, especially considering the YouTube discussion happening atm. She also dyes her hair some very cool colours, often natural shades but she has done silver, purple, pink and turquoise tips before so amazing stuff!

The second of the YouTubers who I wanted to talk to you about today is MeowItsLucy aka Lucy Moon whose VEDJ series (on her second channel teawiththreesugars) which I absolutely adored working my way through.

I love Lucy’s videos because she’s very, very authentic or at least it feels like it. She speaks so frankly and swears a bit about the topic that she’s addressing and it’s often very thought provoking and very, very interesting to listen to. She’s also very thoughtful and doesn’t come across as someone who isn’t open minded but someone who’s come carefully to their conclusions. Finally I absolutely loved this video especially from her VEDJ series because it was out of the blue and I learned something new! She’s the kind of person who knows a lot of random cool stuff and I absolutely love to be around people or to watch people who can sprout cool facts and it’s absolutely normal. Phenomenal stuff :D
