WIP Wednesday

Still working on other things, but then this happened.

Yeah, it’s Pillura. Yeah, it’s an AU. Yes, a lot of it involves texting. No, I haven’t updated my Plance-fic yet. But, maybe, you can accept this as a little after Christmas treat?

LoverboyLancey No, it’s pretty decent. I’m just chilling in the living room. Kinda danced out, and I pulled a double at work.

Allura’s phone trilled as a photo came through. She could see Lance in the middle, grinning in the way that meant he was a little tight, eyes not quite glassy. He had pushed the sleeves up and undone the first few buttons, but that was definitely one of the button-downs he wore for work.

Keith was tucked in by his side sporting his usual ratty black henley and jeans. Allura wondered when those two would settle down and just move in together. She and Lance might talk big, but they had only fooled around a few times years ago; he was one of her best friends, but not on her radar for dating. One day, she hoped he’d pull his head out of his ass and just take Keith home with him.

Oddly, they weren’t alone on the narrow couch. Next to Lance was a short – but everyone looked short next to him – woman in a big green hoodie that read SAPIOSEXUAL. Her glasses were wire-framed and huge, and her auburn hair was pulled back into two pigtails, though most of it looked too short to stay in the ties. If she was wearing pants, Allura certainly couldn’t see them. And she was most definitely looking.

Allura was typing before her brain could catch up with her fingers.

okay listen up space gays

pidge is 15 at season 1 correct? well, if i’m correct, our lovely paladins spent roughly somewhere around a year (or what felt like it) together before keith went off with the blades. SO that puts her at 16 maybe. And if you add the 2 years that our boy keith was gone (revealed in s6) that puts her at THE BIG OL 18! or at least close to it. So really what i’m saying is that ITS OKAY TO SHIP HER WITH WHOEVER YOU WANT

We are Voltron.

After seeing the fandom as a whole struggle with some revelations from the official VLD guidebook, I thought it’s high time for a positive post.

Fandom infighting is always stupid (and always has been, always will be), but in the VLD fandom in particular, infighting over ships and “the discourse” contradicts what is perhaps the most important message in the show: together, diversity and teamwork can lead to amazing things.

Think about each of the individual “parts” of Voltron (the five Paladins, Princess Allura, Coran) and their allies (BoM, Balmerans, Slav, Olkari, etc...). All of these people and groups have different beliefs, personalities, and abilities. As a result, these diverse characters often have disagreements and butt heads, but when it comes down to what’s truly important, they are able to compromise and do amazing things:

Shiro lost his temper with Slav multiple times—something we’d never seen him do before. Although Shiro and Slav clearly did not get along, Shiro knew that Slav would be beneficial to the overall mission. He did what he could to get Slav out of Beta-Traz.

Allura hates the Galra and lumps all of them together as evil. Of course that’s not the case. When she learns that Keith is half Galra, she gives him the cold shoulder, as this complicates what she believes about the Galra. Eventually she does overcome that and apologizes to Keith for her behavior. (Personally I’m not at all happy with how the #NotAllGalra situation was dealt with, but that’s a post for another day.) She’s reluctant to work alongside the Blade of Marmora. (Season 3 spoiler: But at the start of season 3, she has obviously come to welcome Kolivan and the Blade of Marmora as her allies. Even more impressive is that she introduces Kolivan but also defends the BoM despite protests from newly freed planets’ leaders. All of them are wary of BoM—just as she once was.)

Keith and Lance argue over the most trivial things and have a ridiculous rivalry. But they really do make a great team many times throughout. (Season 3 spoiler: Lance helped Keith push through his grief and realize that it was time to step up and take responsibility.)

So what does any of this have to do with the fandom? Everything.

I’m one of the lucky few who entered the VLD fandom during its early stages. There were no shipping wars, no discourse on age, no mass callout or posts blocklists, and no antis. Back then, we were all Voltron. To quote Shiro, we were one unit with one goal: create and share content for a show we all love.

But then SDCC 2016 happened. It was there someone asked creators about the ages of two characters: Shiro and Pidge. Not any other characters. Just Shiro and Pidge. This ended up blowing my ship into smithereens and basically was when I started seeing the beginning of poison seep into the fandom’s openness and kindness toward all.

Many of my fellow Shidge shippers ended up jumping to other ships and fandoms because they were afraid of how other fans would treat them. Some of them would never create content again. I found refuge with a group of Shidge shippers, many of whom felt hostility from and toward other shippers.

There’s an ugly mentality of “us vs. them,” which divides the fandom further and further apart. This needs to stop. We need to start seeing each “section” of the fandom a part of Voltron. Shidge shippers might be a leg, Klance, an arm; maybe Hunay is the head. Yes, we can function separately, but not nearly as well. We all have special interests and skills and talents, and we were all able to learn something from one another. 

There’s enough hypocrisy from the fandom and how it treats the messages of the show. Each and every single one of us should strive for diversity, acceptance, and teamwork.

We are stronger when we are together.

We are Voltron.

Oh, hello VLD fandom!

So today let’s talk about stuff no one wants to talk about;

Let me start saying that I ship Klance, Shillura and I LIVE for non-binary Pidge (I don’t think they’re trans though) and Hunk is most likely ace in my view.

The reason I felt the need to make this post is because I too often see agressive posts like “do NOT interact if you ship *this* or if you’re into *this* hc!!!!” and then there’s the passive agressive ones like “idk why the fandom hates Shiro/Keith/Lance” or “I love vld but the fandom sucks”…

I just think this is so not healthy and like, why can’t you just enjoy the show in your way and let others enjoy it in their way? Seriously, what’s the struggle? Why all these generalizations? All this uncalled for rage?

So, my point is, I want to put it out there that my blog is a safe space for anyone in the fandom who ship whatever they ship and headcanon whatever they headcanon.

• You think Pidge is actually a girl rather than non-binary? Okay, we can discuss that.

• You think Lance is straight and has nothing to do with Keith? Fine.

• You ship Shidge/Sheith/etc? Not my thing but if it’s yours I don’t have a problem with it.

• You hc trans Pidge? Great.

I like this fandom. It’s not perfect, no fandom is, but it’s so not this hell hole many people told me it would be… The show’s all about friendship and overcoming differences and prejudices and oppressive/agressive systems so let’s try and follow that?

It's half a chuckle, half a moan that comes out of Allura's lips at Pidge's line. There is not bite to it, just the usual pointy feeling their every word has, laced loosely in affection and wit.

"Oh, how foolish I was to think being punched in the face would make you any less of a menace."

Pidge chuckles, and Allura carefully applies cold cream around the now tended-to wound. They wince immediately, and Allura feels her brows raising high.

"This is what you get."

"I know," Pidge groans, dramatically prophetic, "here I was playing knight saving the princess. I was so wroooong to ever try to get those arseholes off your back."

Allura chuckles again, spreading the rest of the cream on Pidge's forehead, purely to dry her fingers before running it through their hair. "I could have 0unched them myself."

"Yeah but your nails."

"You don't care about my nails."

"No, but you do."

"This is going to bruise badly."

"I don't regret it. I'd rather have a bruise than see anyone kiss you."

Allura kisses their hairline, slowly before getting up, walking to make some tea. "Now you sound like a jealous lover."

Pidge shrugs, and when they get up too, the light makes their skin gleam. A knight, right? Well the only thing shining about their armor is the thick layer of sweat covering every inch of visible skin.

"I'd like to call it enby/ace solidarity. Y'know. The dating kind."

Allura rolls her eyes, unable to stop the smile twisting her lips in a strange pleased grin. The kind she rarely lets out. The kind she didn't know the word "dating" could bring her, ever. Dating Pidge is easy. And simple. And nice and joyous. It's not as much romance as it is caring and loving. What they are about.

Oh, and that, yes, this is what they are about too, Pidge climbing on the counter to snuggle against her chest, their warm arms and the perspective of a good night's sleep.

"Hey, 'lura?"

"Yes, darling?"

"If I fall asleep here, carry me to bed?"

There's a yawn, and Allura isn't certain Pidge feels her nod before dozing off. She hums instead of laughing, the weight of Pidge warming her chest.

She will.

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were about to kiss me.”
