okay, I don't want this guy to just entirely vanish into the aether so I'm posting ONE photo at the most flattering angle I can find, but.... man 😭 I worked on this for so long and struggled so much and every change and tweak I made hoping to improve the shape just made me less satisfied. There are individual things I'm happy with, like figuring out how to "squint" the eyes and the overall weight and flop of the body, but I feel like I need to revisit the pattern and make some pretty dramatic changes. I may have to accept that I need to break it up into more than like... ten major pieces 😮‍💨

love it when characters have like instictive physical reactions to stress or fright. sonic is standing there, and yeah he looks a little tense, arms crossed and tapping his foot and gritting his teeth, but he seems to be doing alright. but tails looks at him, and sees how his quills are raised, just a little, how he's standing with his feet square beneath him instead of his usual relaxed stance

sonic will duck into into tails' workshop and tails will be sitting at his desk, shoulders tense and rapidly clicking his pen, which isn't unusual, but sonic looks closer and see how he's got his fingers curled into his palms, carefully so he doesnt dig his claws in, how his hackles are raised, making him even more puffed up, and when sonic puts a hand on his head to ruffle his bangs, his glove comes away coated with shedded fur

So, at first the plan was an all-pup team. No first-or second-stage evolutions, no non-dog pokemon. And then I figured out Suo’s team and had to tweak things because of the Plusle-Minun duo I subsequently became obsessed with as a concept. And then I realized that I wanted to show Nirei’s grown as a trainer since meeting Suo, and what better way to do that than evolving his partner pokemon, Lillipup? The puppy spirit it still going strong with Growlithe (Nirei’s insane loyalty), Yamper (excitable and electric, which I think suits Nirei - also “flashy” lmao), and Fidough (this one just reminds me of Nirei, okay?). Herdier’s the big brother of the group now by virtue of just being literally bigger than the rest of them. I think. I’m not checking pokedex heights at the moment, forgive me.

Anyway! Nirei’s a research assistant, studying under Professor Shitara (y’know, one of the only adult in the series who could take on the professor role), who is, coincidentally, Umemiya and Kotoha’s adoptive father. Nirei has no idea, though he’s spotted some questionable photos in the lab that look almost like the current champion, except that’s totally impossible and way too distracting when Nirei’s got work to do!

He met Suo on one of his more daring expeditions, and it was only thanks to Suo’s quick thinking (and his even quicker Mawile) that Nirei didn’t go falling off a mountain. Suo offered to accompany him for a while, and they just sort of… haven’t separated since? Nirei’s always excited when they reach a gym town and Suo battles all-out, but he’s equally fascinated with Suo’s participation in contests (even rarer than his gym battles but still something he does with some regularity).

They’ve crossed paths with Sakura a few times — Sakura hasn’t gotten Suo to battle him yet and he’s livid over it — and Nirei’s eager to keep track of both rookies, especially since Sakura had overtaken Suo in the gym challenge the last time they met.
