I believe I should send an ask to you sooo can you tell me about any of your interests? Anything about them, I’d love to know!
The various web serials of Wildbow, particularly Pale, are what got me on Tumblr. Pale is an urban fantasy story that started out as a murder mystery before spiraling roughly 3.7 million words out of the author's control. It has... a lot. There's a lot.
Wildbow's current web serial is a alternate timeline modern crime drama called Claw. Unlike Pale, this one looks like it may be as short as intended.
I'm also active in three TTRPG campaigns. My IRL group is running Tomb of Annihilation, where I'm playing a Reborn (intelligent zombie) Barbarian trying to figure out the circumstances of his death... And how not to be killed by The Campaign's Plot. The online games where I'm a player are a Changeling game set in New Orleans where my character basically is The Big Bad Wolf... and rooming with a senile reality warper and a mute banshee. Oh, and the other game is Invisible Sun, which is like my webcomic and/or fanfic reading list in that it's impossible to summarize.
I try to get at least some Warframe time in on the daily, as it fulfills my "numbers go up" cravings with less effort and more consistency than writing fanfic ever did. Recently finished building Protea Prime! I group up with my IRL D&D group on Tuesdays for it until recently, as we've switched to Deep Rock Galactic.
Recently got gifted a Magic the Gathering collection by my DM, who wanted to be rid of the cards, but didn't have the heart to sell them. He knew that I'd either do so or play with them, so I've been resorting my multiple collections (mine, his, and that of my older brother who thought selling wasn't worth the effort) to see what was playable/sellable. Found a fuckton of both.
My interest in xianxia is limited to the Beware of Chicken series, which is much better than the name makes it sound.
...Tagging this post is going to be a bitch.

In Defense of Bad Things
'Bad' here meaning mostly 'amateur'; stuff made enthusiastically by people at an unprofessional level. Art with visible gaps between what the artist imagined and what they achieved, products of flawed craftsmanship. I suppose everybody can appreciate them to some extent, it's a rare parent that doesn't put up their kid's drawings on the fridge in one way or another. But it turns out to be a fully general skill you can cultivate, and the more I do, the more I'm glad I did.
Partly, it's the teacher thing; finding delight in amateur work is one of the ways to find delight in the process of learning. Cultivating a love of striving-qua-striving can help make you a force for good in the world, as people start to feel safe trying to do things when you're around, even when their efforts are wobbly. You get to participate a little more in the process of atoms spinning themselves into ideas, even when there aren't any illusions about whether you're helping cultivate some revolutionary genius in the field.
And partly it's a fabulous way to build community. By necessity, our professional-level skills tend to be at the service of other people, performed for economic benefit; that's kind of how you get professionally good at something in the first place. When we're acting for our own sake, and among friends, most of what we do with one another is amateurish. I only cook middling-okay, I can't hold a tune that well, I'll never be a speed runner for anything. If you can only enjoy singing from the hundred best singers in the whole world, manufactured and polished by major studios, then you and your friends will sit shoulder-to-shoulder and passively listen to music. But it's so much richer an experience to sit face-to-face, actually singing together, even badly; you expose yourself to so many new ways to appreciate and respect one another, building relationships on what you've accomplished and not just by witty criticism or liking the same things.
And partly it's because some of the most powerful and innovative artistic experiences are in high-churn environments with low expectations and low barriers to entry, if only because those catch the passionate and driven young people that have been otherwise overlooked by our systems. The golden age of webcomics meant that a ton of the actual art involved was pretty lousy, but it also produced work that people still talk about today. D&D began as a profoundly unpolished collection of handmade rulebooks sold at cons in a plastic baggie. By the time these products of enthusiastic amateurs filter themselves through various levels of popularity and absorb mainstream cash influx, they're often risk-averse and missing a lot of the bold spark that inspired their fans in the first place; others will simply never drift towards the mainstream at all. I'm not saying you should be the person who goes out to dig through the slush piles of the internet looking for overlooked art, unless you want to be-- but sometimes a work of actual staggering genius also happens to be a Supernatural fanfic by a first-time author who's a little hazy on commas, and if that's a dealbreaker, you're going to miss out on some profoundly valuable experiences.
And hiding behind all of these things is, like...
Our appreciation of beauty has an odd structure, right? When things are done very skillfully, by brilliant artists with years of training, we can usually appreciate those accomplishments. And when we're looking at nature without human influence, and especially when we think very deeply about natural processes and understand them in context, we often rediscover that sense of beauty. There's just this bizarre hole in the middle where we declare things 'ugly'; as if a little skill is worse than none at all.
I really don't trust that gap. It feels like a trick my brain is playing on me, you know? It has me suspicious that a lot of what I consider 'ugly' or 'bad' is not a very direct experience of the world at all, or an informed judgment. That it is, rather, a declaration of (self-, social-) identity; a desire to be seen as a person of good taste, or as somebody who does things well, or just more primitively as one of the monkeys who is in the good-stuff-tribe and not one of the monkeys who is in the bad-stuff-tribe.

Okay, but like, what do you guys think of me turning that Midnight Mass Is A Mechs Album idea that I had into an actual like... fanfic. Because I definitely have room for that!
*looks over at the pile of 30 fanfictions, multiple video game ideas, multiple video essay ideas, the webcomic that I am STILL WORKING ON that's on my main tumblr and I have not updated for over a year(there is only one part so far, that is how bad I am with this), and at least 15 amv ideas that I have in the works*
Yep, there is definitely room!

Just a fair warning, I might not post too many fanfics too frequently (not like I'm known to be consistent lol). Mostly because I'm steadily working on much bigger projects, such as story boarding for a novel/webcomic - along with a second webcomic. I am going through and slowly working towards finishing the second part of Kakucho x guitarist, and then I'm going to try and chip away at the requests I have piled up - hope y'all are having a good day/night!!

Cool Hat
This is a fanfic based on Sleepless Domain, a magical girl webcomic by Mary Cagle. It was written for a 'Hearts Day' short fiction game.
———
The faintest surprise registered on Lime's face. "...you wanna break up?"
HP looked lost. Damnit, what do I say next? "It's like, I like you, but I don't know if I like you the way I should like you for, like, dating?" What.
Lime remained non-plussed.
Aaaargh "But I still like you! You're super cool! I just feel like if I'm not totally into it I wouldn't want to stop you from dating someone who thought you were super cool.” wait “But I still think you're super cool! But someone else probably thinks you're even more super cool!” Aaaaaaaaaaargh
Lime was still staring.
Why won't she say something? She hates me so much. "Anyway I'm so sorry, please don't think you need to change or fix yourself!" Why would she think that? What are my hands doing!? Hold still- no that'd look weird! aaaaaa "And that's not what I think! You're cool! Super cool! I'm sorry!" AAAAAAAAAAA
"Pffffffff"
Lime doubled over, unable to hold the laughter in anymore. This was low on the list of HP's expected reactions.
"You're a crack-up, HP. Never seen you in full panic mode. Amazing."
HP slumped, body and soul. "I'm just... I'm really sorry."
Lime waved her away. "Don't stress dude. It's all good. See you 'round, yeah?"
She perked up a little. "Y-yeah. Definitely. I'll see you around."
-----
She turned it over, pinned between her fingers. A black baseball cap, flat brimmed, with an electric pink visor. The crown featured a crude illustration of Heartful Punch's sigil drawn in pink puffer paint. A Hearts Day gift for HP.
Lime examined her work, sprawled on the bed, facing the ceiling. Dirt and grit flaked off her boots, dusting the bedsheets. Three days before Hearts Day. Great timing.
She flicked the hat away. It flopped upside down on a pile of dirty clothes. Lime rolled onto her stomach and stared at the wall.
...waste of money, she thought. That puffer paint crap was expensive.

Can people just STOP calling Marinette a "stalker"? Like, seriously? Especially TV Tropes. They have her listed under the trope for "Stalker With A Crush" and even have a video source of her(from Copycat) which was taken WAY out of context. They also listed her under "Stalking Is Funny If It Is Female After Male", which IS an existing double standard, but Marinette is still not an example and wouldn't be even if she WERE a stalker, because Wayhem's stalking actually WAS played for laughs!
Granted he was stalking another male and we don't know if he has a crush on him(but if he did it would be...unfortunate), but it's still an example. Plus, they claim that Volpina is about her learning her lesson regarding her stalker tendencies, but that no matter how many times she learns it, it never seems to stick. Yes, because everything is Marinette's fault and she's the stubborn shallow bitch who needs a kick in the ovaries, it's not, you know, the writers making her look bad/OOC!!!
THIS. ALL OF THIS.
Oh my god, I cannot tell you how infuriating it is to see “stalker” get thrown around like that. I would need two hands to count the amount of words that have lost meaning to me because people throw them out wildly and without any self-control. Stalkers engage in far more aggressive and obsessive behavior than Marinette, and usually also feature them harrassing whoever they’re stalking (such as calling them a lot), and they also never stop when they’re asked to. Marinette doesn’t fit the description of harrassment at all; Chat Noir does more than her and I don’t even call his behavior “harrassment” because that’s another word that’s lost all meaning by now and I wouldn’t use it in the first place.
Anyway, I think the Wayhem example is valid because Marinette’s crush on Adrien is written very much like a celebrity crush, so it’s similar territory.
On the note of “Volpina,” I do not understand it considering that Tikki was all on board with Marinette following Lila for the sake of getting the book back; that was one of the cases where there was an alternative motive out of just “follow Adrien” (which is not really something we see Marinette frequently doing; usually when we see her watching Adrien, it’s because she wants to approach but can’t bring herself to).
And yeah, most of the time, it’s just the narrative. The show basically puts it all on Marinette to solve all her personal problems (while constantly piling more stuff onto her) instead of getting active encouragement (no, eye rolls, verbal jabs, and groans do not count) from her friends and Tikki.
Like, what am I supposed to expect from Marinette when her friends still actively support Adrienette? By supporting Adrienette, regardless of the comments they make, they’re supporting Marinette’s behavior. Same with Tikki.

Have you noticed that with love interests of Marinette and Adrien, it's always the girls who like Adrien who are shallow, mean bitches and competition to Marinette(like Lila, Chloe, Kagami at first), while the boys who like Marinette are nice, friendly, and have no competition between each other whatsoever, sometimes not even knowing there IS competition(Adrien, Luka, Nathaniel). It's just really unfair and sexist because it's like girls can't be civil/friends and must fight over a guy.
That’s been a common topic of salt for a long while, yeah, I just don’t talk about it much.
It’s a difficult subject because I’m the type who can’t hold it against the guy characters (so I won’t dislike Kagami for “being similar to Chloe/Lila in terms of aggressiveness,” for example) because it feels wrong to, but I can hate the trend itself.
It’s also doubly unfair because Marinette’s crushes blip away quickly (like Nathaniel and Nino) while Adrien’s crushes stick around specifically to upset Marinette, so it’s like the show is saying, “if there’s a character who loves/supports Marinette, they gotta either stop or leave” (I’m pretty sure I got a “Didn’t Need Burrow” about the narrative sending Luka away and I don’t doubt it).

Personal Heacanon: Marinette and Chloé used to be friends until Marinette found out what Chloé (and Sabrina) has been using her commisions (mostly elaborate traps "to guard off thieves") for. This is why Chloé has it out for Marinette specifically. This is why everyone stood by as it happened. This is why she hates liars. This is why her "friends" are so casual at making jabs at her self-stem (they never believed she never knew what Chloé was truly up to). And also why Lila had it so easy at gaslighting everyone againts her (she's "relapsing" and it's easy to think she "deserves it").
Dang. That’s intense.
Yeah, Punch has given quite a few ideas about Marinette and Chloe previously being friends if I recall correctly. I like the idea even if I never use that kind of idea myself.

I feel like Adrien could be a really cool character if they focused less on romance? If that wasn’t his only motivation, and they developed his friendships more, and they didn’t have this entitlement. I also would like more actual friendship in regards to adrien & marinette? And him actually having interest in her but denying it bc he thinks he can only like ladybug. I feel like the sexism of the creators/writers are seeping into the character a lot and ruining it, too... It makes me really sad.
I’m hoping Adrigami will help adrien sort out a lot of his stuff bc Kagami doesn’t take any crap, and I actually really like their relationships, but I don’t have much hope. I would love for the show to use her and this relationship as a way to call out and develop adrien, but I doubt that will happen bc that would mean acknowledging his flaws. It’s just disappointing, really....
Yeah, Adrien could’ve been interesting, especially if they used Adrimi to its full potential, but they don’t. The show also has a history of letting Chat Noir get away with things and not punishing him so I wouldn’t be surprised.

Honestly, I don't even ship the love square anymore, but Fanon Adrienette is a thousand times better than canon Adrienette(the same goes for every other side of the love square, obvs). It's what the canon should be but we fans can only wish. Take, for example, the whole "she's just a friend" statement. In canon Adrien makes it because he genuinely sees Marinette as that and nothing more(which of course isn't bad, it's just sad when Marinette's always humiliated for the sake of getting his love).
In fanon, he makes it because he's actually in denial about his feelings for Marinette(which reminds me of a definition for "just a friend" on Urban Dictionary, which had Adrien drawing her name with hearts and flowers around it, and yet, when Nino asked if he had a crush, he STILL insists she's just a friend!), but realizes his mistake later.
In canon, Adrien thinks Marinette is Ladybug only because it's convenient for him since she's in love with him. In fanon, he actually does notice things about her that make her similar to Ladybug, and falls for her BEFORE knowing their identities because he sees the same qualities of bravery, strength, and femininity that he sees in Ladybug(I remember one fanfic where Marinette stood up to GABRIEL'S overprotectiveness, and Adrien could only admire how much she resembled Ladybug in that moment).
In canon, Chat is ignorant of Ladybug's feelings and agency and doesn't comfort Marinette when she's sad; instead, she has to comfort him. In fanon, Chat Noir cares about how Ladybug feels and values her agency, his jokes are genuinely funny(although canon Chat can be funny too, it's just the where and when), and he backs off when Ladybug is uncomfortable. In fanon, Chat Noir genuinely helps Marinette when she's sad and sometimes comes to see her just because, not out of plot convenience(and calls her "Purrincess" a lot more, why did the English dub just change it to "little lady"?).
It makes me think, maybe, just maybe, if these things were canon and the world was fair to Marinette, I might actually ship it; it might actually have a fighting chance against Lukanette and Adrimi. But while all these things are cute, it only makes canon more disappointing. Fanon is doing what canon should be doing. Fanon is supposed to build off of what canon gave us and expand on it. Fanon shouldn't create its own alternative because canon isn't giving us enough to chew on, it shouldn't have to.
Sadly, I think most of the fans, including the Adriennette-shipping ones, should be on some level in charge of the show; things would be SO MUCH better for the main ship(which isn't even progressing that far) and SO MUCH fairer to Marinette if that were so.
I feel this very much so. The show has been around for a long time and fandom can shape a lot of things. I think the love square wouldn’t be as beloved as it is if not for the fandom expanding on it and making it better (obviously, in some cases, they don’t make it better, but the love square is plentiful so there has to be some good takes out there).
Some shows do in fact let the fandom build off the foundation it makes and then you have things like Astruc outright lying and saying that Chat apologized in “Frozer” when he, in fact, did not, which makes everything more muddled.

What is your opinion of the Scarlet Lady webcomic by Z.O.E?
I’m not into the love square no matter how better one might do it (it’s been soured too much for me in the show), but I do get happy seeing Zoe’s art and wondering how she’ll change/expand on the plotpoints in certain episodes.

Something the genuinely scares me is how close some people’s predictions where for miraculous I just saw predictions people made for season 3 and it’s worrying that the worst possible scenario for them ended up happening beat for beat.
The show can be very, very predictable that way. The way I’d describe it is that I do expect these bad things to happen in really convoluted and dumb ways, but it still surprises me by exactly how predictable it ends up being. I mean, I catch certain things really easily and the phrase, “the whole episode just flashed before my eyes,” is something I commonly say.
Predictability isn’t entirely bad, but when the prediction is unwanted? Yeah, there’s a problem.
Anonymous said:
You could basically summarize the difference between what Miraculous fans want and what the Miraculous writers want by using the John Mulaney "Delta Airlines" bit as a template.
I had to get said bit explained to me since I haven’t seen that one, but yes, now I can confirm.
Anonymous said:
How do you think Chat Blanc would play out if Marinette and/or Adrien were already dating other people? Like if Marinette had already moved on, do you think the narrative would punish her for it?
I imagine it would have Adrien still be crushing on Ladybug and he’d break it off with this other person when he realized that Ladybug is Marinette, which the narrative would then promote as “the correct decision” because they’re soulmates and such. If Marinette has moved on, she probably won’t care about his advances, which would lead to Adrien getting upset and maybe being convinced that an identity reveal would solve the problem and/or speeding up getting Hawk Moth defeated/arrested.
Marinette would probably be blaming herself for not being “sensitive enough” to Adrien/Chat’s feelings, which is what led to him being akumatized.
I could also see the girl squad forcing Marinette to give Adrien the present similar to canon, but maybe the beret doesn’t have a heart and Marinette isn’t actually interested, but rolls with it because the girl squad insists on it (probably convinced that she’s denying her own feelings).

What do you think constitutes as a "strong female character"? Do you think the girls and women in Miraculous Ladybug are "strong female characters"? Why or why not(I'm sorry if this sounded like a school assignment, by the way!)? Because to me I feel like a lot of them are given depth and focus, but they're often forced into stereotypes, and let's not forget how the show derail's Marinette's character for a joke. But lots of people think a strong girl has to be boyish or else she's weak somehow.
“I'm sorry if this sounded like a school assignment“ dfhgkfdgfg
I guess it depends on what you consider a strong female character. Like, can a shy female character be “strong” if maybe she holds firm to her morals or can fight people off?
I think Marinette has the potential to be a “strong female character” but the show nerfs her using her crush on Adrien (which raises so many red flags that I can’t cover here) and all it’s really done for her is get her laughed at and humiliated. If her life didn’t revolve and get ruined so badly due to her crush on Adrien, I think she’d be a strong female character (I know what the Season 3 finale did but I’m not buying any of it until we see proper results in Season 4).
That’s not to say that characters with crushes can’t be “strong” but it has to not control their life. I mean... okay...
Would Sabrina be considered a “strong female character” if she recognized Chloe’s treatment of her and worked hard to get out of it? Is the want and attempt to move on from something what constitutes “strength,” or do they have to succeed?
My conflict is always... I want to give Marinette credit for trying to move on from Adrien, but I know that it’s just the writing trying to make things seem tense/strained just to make it feel “better” when they actually get together. You see it all the time in anime/manga where a misunderstanding/self-doubt ends up hurting the relationship of the main ship; it’s to force conflict and separation, giving the ship something to overcome so they can get together.
I will say though that shy characters can be strong, physically strong characters can be weak, and so on. What defines a “strong” character may be vague to me, but I take it as I go. I would like to say that Marinette is a strong character on her own because she wants to improve even if she fails, but I also don’t want to give the writing credit for something that ultimately means nothing. I want to say that she’s strong but the narrative seems to do everything in its power to tell me that she’s weak.
Let me give a non-Miraculous example: say that you have a pacifist character, but there’s a villain who has done terrible things, cannot be redeemed (plz do not swarm my inbox with “anyone can be redeemed” comments, this is a hypothetical), and any method besides killing them right there and now would lead to more destruction/lives lost.
You might say that that the pacifist character would be “strong” in sticking by their morals and trying to find another way even if they ultimately would fail and the villain would get away, but an argument can also be made that the pacifist is being stubborn and letting people die because they are unwilling to rethink the morality they’ve chosen. Is a pacifist a pacifist if they’re letting the blood of other people spill because they themselves aren’t willing to have the blood be on their own hands? Are they “strong” because they stuck by what they believe in or are they “weak” because they refused to expand what they believed was “right”?
You could apply that to Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender (I know he’s not female but stick with me here). He was faced with having to murder the Fire Lord to the point where a past reincarnation who was raised on the same values as him didn’t agree with him. I think it was acceptable for him to try and stick to his morals and find another way, but he came up empty and the show had to give him a way of taking away the Fire Lord’s power so Aang didn’t have to make that choice in the end (there’s also that thing with the rock to his back and having to give up Katara but we’re not getting into that).
People could argue that, “oh, he admitted to himself that he’d have to kill the Fire Lord and then he got the Deus Ex Machina so it’s okay!” but the problem there is that the narrative basically gave two options: Murder or Take Away the Guy’s Bending, but there was incredible risk involved in the latter option. Aang almost lost himself against the Fire Lord and risked everything so that he would not have to kill him.
I would argue it makes him weak. I would argue that needing the narrative to favor him makes him weak (which is one plus for Marinette I guess the narrative is usually against her???). The lack of ability to understand his past lives and see things from their perspective made him weak for me, as him holding so stiffly to his values made it appear that he felt his ways were “better” than everyone else’s (which had been a long-standing problem for me and I never forgave him for “The Southern Raiders”).

What do you think of adriens mom Emilie. Like what do you how do you feel she wound up using the peacock miraculous personally I’m leaning into her being a villain due to the fact that there aren’t any stories of a peacock hero (unless they retcon that) and that her husband is well freaking Gabriel who has no real form of morals. Also I can’t help but think of how they got the miraculous in the first place. Anyways overall what do you think they will do with her or think of her right now.
I see her like I see any dead mom in media (I know she’s comatose, not the point); a tool for angst. Her reasons for using the peacock could be anything (might even be that she was given it and simply wearing it was damaging to her, or she transformed once to try it out and that was that), but I just don’t feel strongly about her because I’m not invested in the Agreste plot.
Me personally, I headcanon that she’s kind of like Bustier where she appears good but is actually very damaging. Instead of the generic “good mom who tried to do good things for her son but folded to angry dad’s demands,” I would like to imagine that she’s selfish in her own right and was part of the reason for Adrien never going to public school; she’s possessive herself (a contributor to why the Agrestes are so wealthy) and wants her son to remain close to her even if she genuinely cares about him and should want him to be able to go and learn from the world.
But I imagine they’ll probably make her either “pure good mom” or “villain like Gabriel where she’s ‘sympathetic’ but also evil.” The show has never been good at doing gray morality (see my MC Audrey for example) and usually messes things up if they try.

Honestly, I don't like Mme. Bustier, but if they DARE pull the pregnancy jokes with her--and I don't mean "pregnancy puns", like those would be ACTUALLY funny without offending anybody, but "ooh, she's pregnant so now she's moody and has wacky cravings and screams at everybody and is a nightmare to be around" and other things that just scream "male writer who mocks female biology and doesn't understand women", I'm going to cry. We already don't like Bridezilla, and this isn't any better.
Ugh. I don’t even like pregnancy plots in general or anything related to pregnancy (my followers who have been around forever and know of my hatred towards babies: wow what a shock!!), so adding on “jokes” like that?
Hard pass. I already don’t like Bustier so the mere idea of her potentially getting any focus there--

What do you think of the Alyanette ship? Personally, I'm ambivalent to it, but I can sorta see Alya being bi and having a crush on Marinette but Marinette doesn't like her back. Or she could have a crush on Ladybug. But I don't like the idea of it being mutual, considering how pushy and invasive Alya is. It also doesn't make sense for her to so insistently push the love square if she likes Marinette. But perhaps that's where some of her sarcastic quips come from: jealousy(cliche I know).
I’m always here for bi representation (no one can take my bi disaster headcanon’d Nino and Kagami away from me), but I actively dislike the Alyanette ship. I was okay with it back in Season 1 but it started to fall off in Season 2 and officially die in Season 3.
I don’t judge people by what they ship (...much; there’s obviously that little part of me that can’t help giving the side eye) but yeah, not for me.
Anonymous said:
As a different flavor of angst: Can you imagine Marinette’s class going to Riverside park in NYC and Tikki spotting the Jeanne D’Arc statue? I always wondered what it would have been like for Tikki to see Jeanne burned alive by the people she swore to protect. I think Nobody briefly touched on this for Witch Hunter, but not many people I have seen (probably missed something) talk about it. What do you think?
I’m indifferent to past holders getting mentioned and acknowledged; not sure how I feel about them given specific names and such (I kinda like seeing their designs and such but making them actual people from the real world? mmmm not here for that as much).
I like the idea though of addressing those real world things and having the kwami reacting to them. Like, it did make me genuinely sad in the New York special to see Liiri come out and call out Gilbert’s name, only to see this other guy standing there and we know that this Gilbert guy is very much dead by now.
On a related note, I’d be all for a special getting into a kwami’s problem and not making everything Marinette’s fault, so having Marinette maybe helping a kwami through theri issues and it leads into getting more lore on the kwami.

I just had an epiphany today: People who hate on Marinette for being "mean" to Lila/teachers telling Marinette to ignore Chloe and Lila and treat them nicely are the equivalent of real adults telling girls who are being bullied by boys that "he does it because he likes you." Ladies, raise your hands if something like this has ever happened: "Jamal tried to cut my cheek open with a razor!" "Oh, Aaliyah, he's only doing it because he likes you." Now that I've seen it I can't unsee it. Disgusting.
“Marinette, they’re just jealous of you, that’s all! Can you really get angry at them for that??”
us: yes

Thinking about Puppeteer 2 and how Marinette's identity could have been blown if she had talked to Tikki because of Plagg's incompetence angers me beyond belief because I know, just KNOW, if that had actually happened, Marinette would take ALL THE BLAME for it like there's no tomorrow. It would never occur to anyone that she normally talks to Tikki while she's alone and had no idea that the "statue" in front of her was a real boy AND her partner, or that Plagg should have said something. Ugh.
I KNOW, RIGHT????
That was such a big annoyance to me in that episode. They literally neglected the actual reality of what would happen (”Oh, Tikki! No one’s here, I could practice on this Adrien statue!”) for the sake of humiliating Marinette... again.

Your comment about how Ladybug always says she's "in love with someone else", as if that should matter diddly squat when the problem is with Chat not respecting her feelings on their own without another guy in the picture reminds me of a #YesAllWomen post I saw on Twitter. It read: "'I have a boyfriend' is the easiest way to get a man to leave you alone. Because he respects another man more than you." It's just like this except without the dating and the fact that Chat DOESN'T leave her alone.
And then you remember that the “someone else” she’s in love with is the exact person who’s disrespecting her feelings and you proceed to hate everything.

The statue scene in Puppeteer 2 could've easily kept its humor by having Adrien fall over when Marinette puts her weight on him and almost kisses him, then Marinette goes "Gasp! You're not a statue!" Marinette is always being forced to humiliate herself in the name of "love", even when she doesn't deserve it, so for once, let Adrien be the one utterly humiliated of his own doing. Then they could have a sad scene where Adrien ACTUALLY comforts her and...wait for it...LEARNS A LESSON.
Alternatively, someone who works on the statues comes in and, also mistaking Adrien for a statue, tries to do some sort of work on him.

Since we can all agree that this show is sadly not very good at girl power/inclusivity, how would you tweak the show to make it more genuinely female-empowering/inclusive(can include racial/sexual inclusivity)? Besides the obvious(including more female and/or POC writers on board).
Orientation-related inclusivity isn’t even that hard. Have a character get a call from someone and just be like, “oh, it’s my boyfriend/girlfriend,” and then other companies can just dub it if they’re so afraid of characters who like the same gender.
Firstly, I’d have Marinette learn and become more of a mentor character to other characters (male and female), lean more into more “females in power” (like Mylene showing genuine interest in being the next mayor), either less focus on the “girl antagonists are evil/unredeemable” plots or at least make them legitimate threats that don’t need the narrative to cater to them to make them threatening.
Secondly, Adrien needs to STOP being the one to keep telling Marinette/Ladybug what’s right or the way to do things. I can’t stress this one enough.
Thirdly, maybe not having a season dedicated to three guys getting miraculouses while all the girls are either questioned, self-reveal, or get their miraculous revoked. That might help. :P

The saddest thing is that I can see ML going through a "Fate: The Winx Saga" in the future and having an awful, edgy reboot to appeal more to adults.
Different writers probably but at what cost.
+ more sexualization obviously since that’s usually what “more adult” means; Audrey gets the cleavage that her design clearly calls for at least, but again, at what cost

I hate what TheOnesWhoMustNotBeNamed have done to the Love Square but I also don't like Lukanette and Adrigami (nothing against the characters themselves). This is going to be one of those shows that regardless what ship wins is going to disappoint around 90% of the fans.
No hate for not liking Lukanette/Adrimi, I understand that.
And yeah, there’s a <1% chance that they can pull out anything satisfying.

Off topic, but I realized why I don’t like Clara Nightingale’s design, there’s no light to her eyes, makes her look kinda dead, kinda evil.
DQ tend to do that when they’re the ones animating. I remember “Christmaster” doing particularly well with the eye highlights.

What do you think about the future Miraculous specials (Africa, Japan, Rio, Shanghai, London)?
Will be happy to see a new setting because it shows different cultures (though there’s always the chance that the culture is poorly-represented) but that’s basically it. Specials are usually just a cash grab that are just there and any expansion on lore and such is shunted to the side for the sake of love square drama, judging by the New York special.

I haven't watched the New York Special yet, don't think I can bring myself to tbh, but this whole time I thought Aeon was the name of the superhero persona, and that the fandom was collectively calling her civilian identity Uncanny Valley bc her model was that bad.
I was genuinely shocked to find out that her civilian identity is named Aeon and that her hero name is Uncanny Valley bc that is not only a stupid name, but kind of insulting since she's an android character of color. (Well, she's a character of color except for when shes running around as a pale naked superhero. Majestia, give your kid some pants!)
oof
Yeah, the Uncanny Valley thing threw me off too. “Aeon” really does sound like a superhero name.
I can’t believe they made her a robot and were like, “mannequin robot design.” I question so many things about the decisions made around Aeon fdkjgjfdg.

Do you think they’ll ever leave DuPont college, since it’s a middle school (essentially) and go to a lycee (high school)? I think they’re in their second year of four at DuPont, judging by the previous class picture.
I doubt it, unless we get more seasons? It would mean having to model a whole new school.

(this is the wrong blog, yes, you’re looking for mc-lukanette, not miraculouscontent)
Thank you though! i agree, that’s cute, ahaha~

Did you know that there's a TV Tropes page for LadyBugOut?! And someone even left a review there saying they liked it and that they were sick of the Marinette embarrassing and wanted some Lukanette. They say your au is their favorite au in the fandom! Isn't that just swell?
Yes! And the TV Tropes page is fantastic! Thank you!

OMG IVE FIGURED OUT WHY MARINETTE IS UNABLE TO GET OVER ADRIEN!!! She’s under the influence of a love potion called Amortentia, which causes a powerful obsession from the drinker (it’s from Harry Potter). That’s why she’s so obsessed, and that’s why she can’t get over Adrien! She literally can’t while under the influence of the potion! She just needs to drink the antidote, and then she can finally be free!
Oh no!! Someone get this poor girl an antidote, STAT!

I was just reading your review of Silencer(which I totally agree with by the way), and when I got to the part about how Ladybug lost her voice and her powers are voice-activated, it got me thinking about how annoying Chat was being(as another anon noted, which I also agree with), and then it hit me. While it may just come off as his usual flirtatious banter that's innocent, the fact that he doesn't even seem to mind Ladybug not being able to detransform because then he gets to "be with her" forever and ever and ever amen just proves your point about Chat Blanc. He cares more about being with Ladybug than Ladybug herself, so long as she gets to keep being Ladybug "for him", that's what matters. Remember that the girl he fell in love with was the superhero persona and not the girl under the mask. He couldn't care less about who that actual girl is so long as she's his "lady" and loves him back. He just wants her to uphold the image of his strong and powerful "lady" that he admires.
(Glad you enjoyed the “Silencer” review! Thanks!)
Full agreement here! Chat isn’t really in love with Ladybug; he’s in love with the image he’s made of her and wants to keep it that way, no matter how much he may suggest otherwise.

Luka is soooo much more interesting with Marinette like, why isn't he the love interest? Same with Kagami for Adrien. To be honest it would be cool if the show set up the love square at first but then slowly started to change to Lukanette and Adrimi once Marinette and Adrien realized their crushes were just not working out. They can still have an identity reveal, but they'll refreshingly stay friends. But the writers don't have the ovaries to do that, I get it. -_- Such wasted potential.
They could’ve done a really interesting bait-and-switch but they decided not to. The love square is full of holes and flaws that they’re very likely never going to address (outside of anything used for that “gAsP maybe they won’t get together???” drama), so having it actually be addressed and be like, “okay, we’re better as friends,” would’ve gone over so much better.

I hear people complain all the time that Lukanette is toxic because Luka is merely the "second choice" for Marinette, and that she just uses him as a rebound when she fails to get Adrien's attention. But the truth is, that's not how it is at all. Luka's not anywhere near her "second choice". He gives her tranquility and stability, and she helps him loosen up and have someone to express his creativity towards. Plus, it's totally normal for teens to have two crushes whom they can't choose between.
THIS
ALL OF THIS
I am so tired of people saying that Marinette is “using” Luka in someway as if it’s a conscious decision on her part to take advantage him.
Luka makes her happy. That’s it. Luka is aware of how she feels and respects her space, but I guess that makes him a “pushover” and “he lets Marinette walk all over him” because he didn’t get upset with her and embarrass her in “Desperada” by calling her out over her Adrien blindness.

People who say "I like Marinette but she's getting to be pretty embarrassing sometimes" really don't get that the show constantly forces her into situations where she's embarrassed and made out to be incompetent. Like, it's not her that's embarrassing, it's the show that's always embarrassing her. Kind of like Serena/Usagi in the (shitty)DiC English dub of Sailor Moon. It's getting irritating to hear people continually rag on Marinette as if SHE'S the clueless idiot, rather than the writers.
There are some things that happen to her that she literally could not have predicted. Like, just saying, if I had someone claiming to be my friend, I would expect them to know I’m anxiety-prone and not pretend to be a statue just

Remarried Empress Anon: I can see Felix as the Duke and maybe Jagged Stone as Kosair (but an uncle and not her brother).
I agree with both of those! Jagged Stone as Kosair/Koshar, omg.
Plus, the idea of Luka and Felix being “friends” amuses me.
Anonymous said:
You know, I find Felix/Marinette content to be really funny. Because, Felix in fanfiction is a completely different character than his canon self- with a different personality, background, and maybe even last name. So, the entire Marinette/Felix fandom is literally just Marinette/oc except it's always the same oc
I struggle to get fully behind Felinette because so much of it does rely on fandom interpretation and playing with fanon in general (plus, having to clarify “I ship fanon Felinette” is weird).
I do however agree that it’s interesting that it ultimately comes to a character built on fanon grounds, and how much more acceptance characters get when they’re based on “canon”/originally canon characters.

How would you write the Miraculous PV version? Just wondering.
I don’t think I could without drastically changing characters and at that point it’s not really the PV anymore. “Bridgette“ and Felix’s relationship is the exact opposite of what I like to watch/read about so yeah, changing both of them to what I like would either be too severe of a rewrite or me working too far within the restrictions set out for me.

There's a YouTube video claiming that someone will figure out that Marinette is Ladybug and that she will suffer...I mean, yeah? Isn't that what we've already been getting? I mean, not the first part, obviously(and when we have, it's been undone), but the second? Have we been watching the same show? No, have we? Because Marinette suffering, sadly, is not anything new.
lol “Marinette will suffer!” and us like “did you seriously use future tense as if Marinette isn’t already suffering??”

Am I the only one who feels like Miraculous Ladybug is feeling less like a magical girl show and more like just another superhero show? This isn't even because of "girl power" or anything like that, or the fact that there are male Miraculous wielders like Chat and Carapace and(long dreamy sigh) Viperion. This is because the outfits don't really resemble magical girl outfits at all and, after watching various magical girl shows both in and out of Japan, Miraculous is starting to feel like its genre is shifting from magical girl to that of "superhero" in its broadest term. And I know I said I wouldn't bring up "girl power", but the fact that so many of the girls aren't treated respectfully by the narrative and are pitted against each other, to the point where they're more likely to lose their Miraculouses or reveal their identities(which often culminates in losing their Miraculouses), only adds to this because the Magical Girl genre is about female empowerment and solidarity.
It's sad because I really don't want this show to become one of those shows where "there might be one or two girls, and she might even be the lead, but it's still mostly guys who are front and center doing the heavy lifting" that we get all the time. Things are starting to change for the better and I want Miraculous to capitalize on that emergence of female empowerment as much as possible. Plus, with the New York Special, the magical girl aspects of the show have been toned down if not obliterated entirely: the transformations for the superheroes only last one minute, and they feel more like the Avengers than Sailor Senshi(which I don't mean in the most literal sense, of course, I am in no way saying that none of them can be male.). Plus they pulled the whole "Samus is a Girl" thing TWICE! TWICE! Come on, if you're show is really about girl power, it shouldn't come as a surprise when girls are, well...powerful! And especially not in Magical Girl for obvious reasons.
So while I'm not saying it's bad for a show to shift from the original genre it was meant to be in(although it must be done carefully, otherwise it looks like you don't know what you're doing), and there is of course no wrong way to do Magical Girl(except for Madoka Magica and Yuki Yuna, do NOT go there!), it does make me wonder. And it's kind of disappointing, because I really love Magical Girl and I feel like shows like these could introduce the genre to a wider audience and could renovate it as well. But unfortunately they're going a different direction, and that makes me sad. If not for the transformation phrases/sequences and the fact that they have animal companions, I imagine most people would be totally clueless as to how on Earth this show counts as Magical Girl. It still counts as such for me, but it's deviating farther and farther away from the genre to the point where it becomes nigh unrecognizable, or like even the show writers forgot what genre it's supposed to be. Sadly.
Yikes.
Yeah, I can’t imagine how seeing this show must be like for people that are more savvy with magical girl shows. Me personally, I had to be told that it was a magical girl show because it honestly just gave off the “superhero show” vibes even with the magical girl-esque transformations.
Plus, with magical girls, you usually expect a group of girls? Here, we have Ladybug and Chat Noir, who the writers keep being like “they’re equals” which... yeah, that’s fine but it doesn’t really work with the idea that this is a magical girl show? I mean, “Party Crasher” was basically Ladybug and her reverse harem of superhero guys who just got out of a “males-only” party.
I dunno, coming from someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience with magical girl shows, it just doesn’t have what I would expect when I think “magical girl show featuring a healthy dose of girl power.”

I was once reading this review of Miraculous Ladybug called "Miraculous Ladybug is a Hot Mess: A Rant", and while it's a good video and you should watch it and I totally agree with everything she said(plus, it made me laugh a few times!), I had a huge issue with the way she made Marinette's stammering around Adrien to be ALL HER FAULT since he's never mean to her and is always patient with her(yeah, more like oblivious), but that "she's incompetent" and "cockblocks herself", which annoys me because Marinette on her own is not the incompetent one here(I also don't like the term "cockblock", like, can we not? But anyway...), rather, it's the writers who make her incompetent for cheap laughs and don't allow her to improve or let anyone(but Luka, bless his kind soul!) truly be on her side. She then had the nerve to say "Marinette needs to learn to define herself outside of who she's crushing on", when, NO, once again, the WRITERS are the ones who define her by her crush on Adrien.
It's one thing to blame a character for something even when she's clearly written by a writer, because characters are supposed to be consistent yet flexible and have free will in-universe. But when she's written this inconsistently/it's obvious the writers have it out for her(to the point where they even say it) it is nigh impossible to pretend it's an aspect of the character herself and not the writers at fault. THAT'S where you draw the line between blaming the character vs the writer.
In fact, speaking of Luka, she also said that she wants the show to get rid of Luka because he's just a "plot device" and has no reason to like her beyond the fact that she's a "funny girl". She also said that Luka is a stereotype of the "cute bad boys who are emo", when that's blatantly untrue. She's allowed to not like Lukanette but all the things she's saying really ignore the point of his character and that his life DOESN'T revolve around Marinette; the writers simply don't respect him.
Even worse, she contradicted herself by saying that Lukanette is pointless because "we all know that Marinette is going to get with Adrien; it's endgame so why does the show even bother with Luka?" Then right after that says that Kagami's okay and that it's okay for Adrien to move onto Kagami because Ladybug has rejected him as Chat so many times(which is apparently not the case for Adriennette because "MaRiNeTtE's JuSt InCoMpEtEnT" right?). So teenage girls aren't allowed to like other boys or date more than one boy, yet teenage boys can date as many chicks as they like. Nice.
And apparently, any problem in a relationship or potential relationship is the girl's fault no matter what. She can't approach him because Goddess forbid girls not always be perfect and capable? She's incompetent and it's all her fault she can't properly talk to a perfectly nice, cute, FAMOUS boy. She rejects him every time he confesses despite him knowing it will fail. Her fault for being mean and not giving him a chance. She gets tired of chasing him and decides to look at someone else since it's not like she's legally married to Boy #1? She should stick with the original boy since they're gonna get together anyway. He gets tired of chasing her and decides to look at someone else since it's not like he's legally married to Girl #1? She should've realized his feelings for her and returned them since they're gonna be endgame anyway. Has this lady ever even been a teenage girl?
Plenty of teenage girls get tongue-tied around the one they love even if he or she is a perfectly nice, sweet person, it doesn't mean they're incompetent(especially when the girls are fictional characters in a world set out to punish them for not making progress and for trying to make progress at the same time, and the fact that the boy is a celebrity who is always made oblivious and kept distant enough from the girl so she can keep putting him on a pedestal and never truly get to know him). Plenty of teenage girls lose interest in one boy and so fall for another. Yet it's somehow only okay for boys to do it? Seriously?
And then for the episode "Ladybug", the reviewer continues to rag on Marinette, blaming her for the fact that her reaction to getting expelled was "I can't let that nasty Hawkmoth win", claiming she wasn't reacting like a normal teen or human in general would react in that scenario, completely ignoring the fact that it's TIKKI who doesn't comfort Marinette and forces her to focus on her duties as Ladybug and almost getting akumatized. She's right about the plot moving too fast, but she doesn't take into account WHY it's moving too fast, because the show doesn't focus on Marinette's inner struggle and what she has to go through. Instead of giving her time to process her thoughts after all that goes on and providing Tikki as a source of comfort and support(which she's, you know, SUPPOSED to be), they make Tikki berate her and force Marinette to push it to the side.
She's never allowed to feel. And that's why it hurts all the more when this woman insults Marinette for her perceived ineptitude, and she's fully allowed to dislike Marinette, critique her behaviors, dislike Luka, critique his role in the story etc., just don't reinforce a double standard as you do so and look closer: ultimately most of Marinette's problems are due to her not being permitted to FEEL. She's not allowed to be nervously in love, or be calm, or be offended, or be just not ready.
The writers keep pushing her in one direction, to be emotionless, to be selfless, to be nice, to be honest, to be "the mature/responsible one" to be a perfect little "Purrincess", to not push for or want anything for herself, even though the show is supposed to be about girl power! She does somewhat touch on that by saying that Ladybug never gets to "take a hit" and that the Marichat scene in Glaciator was too short, but she never goes into why everything is too-fast paced. And if she did, she wouldn't be saying everything she does about Marinette and Luka. Because Luka is more than just the "plot device" she dismisses him as.
He's like a calm oasis, the apple of the hurricane who keeps Marinette calm and just lets. her. breathe. He's possibly the only person who doesn't berate her, who doesn't mimic her, who doesn't insult her, who doesn't ignore her. And the one time he does, he apologizes RIGHT AWAY when he sees how sad she looks. And the funny thing is, I used to hate that scene, because when I first saw it, I thought "Oh man! Luka did the same thing as everyone else did once!" But now I see that it serves as a contrast, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to the other characters in the show. Whereas they never apologize for how they treat Marinette(and often she somehow ends up apologizing instead, sadly) and in fact seem oblivious to it at times or just don't care, Luka notices, Luka cares, and Luka apologizes. That shows that he cares about her and her feelings, unlike the rest of the characters in the show.
And while they do care about her, they're never held accountable for how they treat her. Anarka and Plagg are probably the only exceptions that I can think of(who contribute to the plot of course), but they're obviously not love interests, and the video doesn't talk about them, so I won't talk about them either. But my point is that this review, while good in other ways, is still problematic in this regard, for how it completely ignores Marinette's struggles and how they affect her, as well as the value of Luka's character(even if the show doesn't recognize it at times) and the POSITIVE effect they have on each other(especially since he actually, genuinely, wholeheartedly loves her and is patient with her, since Adrien is barely even her friend and Chat is pushy and entitled. And he has a life outside of her too, which this video chooses to ignore.)! So yeah, I'm sorry this took so long, but I just had to protect my favorite characters because that video did them so dirty. Thank you for coming to my Lukanette Ted Talk! Have a miraculous day! ;3
...Wow????
Can I just say wow??
Firstly, kudos to you for having the patience to not only write all of that, but simultaneous deal within Tumblr’s limitations while doing so? I almost wish I had a video detailing all of these topics (not exactly a video response to that person, but just detailing all of this without explicitly calling people out).
Secondly, I absolutely, 100% feel you on the double standards. I have seen so much hypocrisy in my experiences and it’s insane how people will bash Marinette relentlessly and then let Adrien off with a bunch of excuses, or hate Luka for essentially existing and then accept Kagami.
I also hate the idea of disliking Luka because he’s there to make Marinette feel better, and then liking Kagami because she causes conflict, like the implication is that conflict equals good and things that make Marinette feel loved and cared for are bad because love square endgame, I guess.
It’s exhausting, especially when Marinette is fourteen, clearly tries, but is getting no support. Like, have you ever thought how weird it was that Tom and Sabine seemingly knew back in “Gamer” that Marinette was crushing on Adrien, but in “Weredad,” they don’t worry about the fact that Marinette is into someone else or wonder what might’ve happened with Adrien, like if he might’ve hurt her in some way? If the assumption is, “oh, they just think that’s a teenage thing, flip-flopping between love interests,” well... Tom clearly takes what he thinks to be her current crush very seriously, and even if it was true that they presume she’s just flip-flopping, that really doesn’t show them to see Marinette as more than just a clumsy teenager-in-love stereotype.
So yeah, the characters who are meant to be there to support her ask no questions, but here’s Luka with his sweet “you can tell me everything or nothing, you can be yourself around me,” line, and yet... Luka is the problem???
Sure, how dare this sweet boy NOT cause Marinette more stress. He makes Marinette feel better about herself and therefore he’s “pointless” (which, really, is the true mark of someone who doesn’t care about Marinette).
Ugh.
But yeah, in conclusion, people can have insane double standards when it comes to Luka and Marinette, and thank you for the Lukanette Ted Talk, this was a really good piece! You have a nice day too! ;3
(note: the below ask seems to cut short at the end and I didn’t get a message back about it but I at least wanted to have it here so the anon has (most of?) their story heard even if I can’t properly comment on it:)

Relating to the ask about Marinette imagining the events of the series. For me it would be realistic as I sort of see myself in her position for some parts, especially how her friends are represent (mainly Alya) and I can see myself picturing the events of the story (surrounding them) to some extent.
I'm continuing on to explain and rant about how I relate to Marinette. So about Alya's pushiness with Marinette's crush and how she won't let her move on. I used to be sort of friends with this person and one day we hanging out at school and she started badgering me to tell her who my crush was, even though I told her I didn't have one (I didn't have one but even if I did it wasn't her business, especially because we hadn't really interacted for a couple years).
She pressured me enough that I felt the need to make up a person, then she called me out just after I did it because she knew I was lying but didn't realise how uncomfortable I was lucky we were by ourselves so no one could hear how embarrassing it was. It still is but I sort have gotten over it (that's why I'm hear complaining). For her being made to sit by herself because everyone else paired of, I can relate.
I have never been the person who is really close with the friend group (probably because I'm quiet and struggle to interact with others), but I still I hang out during class time, but there have been times when two of the friends sat together and the other friend chose not to sit with me but just in front of me (the tables can fit two people at them) until one friend I went to primary school asked "what about [me]", so them she sat next to me.
The person I went to primary school with also has chosen to sit with the person who was not to sit with me so she could sit closer to the other two friends diagonally across from me on the table next to mine. I can understand Marinette in The Chameleon for how she would of felt when her friends turned in because I am left wondering if my friends even like me, although primary school friend sometimes tried to get to wait with them when we were waiting for the teacher to show up.
As I mentioned earlier I anxious when trying to interact with people who are even considered my friends so I wait for them to invite me to hangout with them. And for the ending of The Chameleon when everything went back to normal, in primary school we had this task we were told research a person and write a biography on them so as the teacher told us we were writing a good copy and the work in our books was a rough draft.
I wrote the information down as I would the good copy to make sure I was happy with it. When we were writing the good copy, I started to worry I had done something wrong as I had seen my friends work and they bith had just written down the facts. So as my friends and I kept having arguments and fights so I told them that I hoped I remembered to spell all the names correctly because they were not names I was knew how to spell which was true so they didn't question it as I could tell they did

Do I want to wade into the murky waters of Ye Old Fanfic Vs Original Fic wars? Yes.
I don’t know who amongst Twitter or Tumblr needs to hear this, but your edgy as fuck takes on whether fanfiction has value or not aren’t new or enlightened. I tend not to get public with my takes on writing, because I was there 10+ years ago doing this exact thing on Quizilla & Mibba, and an individual’s medium of writing and impetus is their own damn business. Any and all writing has value. Sometimes it’s meant for personal indulgence or for small communities or friend groups, other times it has to pass muster for professional publication (which is a whole other shit bag of contention) or mass public consumption.
These arguments (they are never discussions) are also exhausting and pointless. Nobody wins these things.
I agree that Cassandra Claire/Clare and E.L. James are poor examples of professional writers having begun their careers in fanfiction. But, I’d also point out that actual literary agents and publishing houses signed and printed them, and professional editors did at least skim over their works. The authors aren’t the only ones to get blame for shit writing. And let’s not forget Anne Rice, infamously unfriendly toward fanfiction, chucked professional editors out of her equation altogether because she didn’t like them having opinions on her work.
Not all writers want to be published nor want fame.
It does seem to baffle when those words enter the ears of pretentious writers, readers, and others who don’t write at all. Some people write because it’s fun, like a hobby. Sometimes those people, who write for fun, will edit their work and sometimes they let it go as is because it’s just for catharsis.
My big personal project is to track down all digital and hard copies of my writing and catalogue them. I’ve been doing it for 10 years now. I’ve been writing and sharing my writings for the last 18 years. I have a hard copy of the very first major piece of fiction I wrote (a Lord of the Rings fanfic from 2002/2003) and a hard copy of the last piece of fiction I worked on (an AU fic for a Japanese otome game) and a hard copy of my first original novel (a urban gothic from 2017). There is an absolute difference in my writing from age 11 to age 28. And looking at my catalogue of writing, most of it is fanfiction. Do I have original works in there? Yes. Are they good? I think they are, and my friend thinks they are, but whether or not those works are up to snuff for a book deal—that’s up to an agent I haven’t sought out.
Improvements to my writing can be attributed to age (I’ll be 29 in a little over a week), to a university education (a BA in Performance Art from a STEM based offshoot of a way more prestigious school is the most I could afford after 3 years of community college), and alternating writing fanfiction online with a built-in audience/community and sharing original works online (where they got much less attention) and with writing groups/friends.
The truest rule of any endeavor is: you get better with practice.
Does fanfiction enable bad habits? Sure, but so does being educated at an Ivy League school. There’s no shame in acknowledging our own shortcomings. I mean, fuck though, I’d take overusing the phrase “carded his fingers” or inexperienced writers with funky grammar over being a snob with a Linguistics degree and a podcast.
What makes me, an unknown writer, a maybe valuable voice in this here shitkicking?
Because I’ve been doing this for half of my life and because I love stories. I’m an advocate for education and reading, and libraries and accessible information. I’m all for kids (anyone really) picking up comics or graphic novels, or reading fanfiction or webcomics, reading whatever genre or medium floats their boat if it means they’re engaging their minds and imaginations. This extends to film and video games and podcasts and audiobooks too because not everyone has the same level of literacy or ability to physically read or stay engaged with written text.
I don’t have a lot of experience in many things, and I am by no means a fabulous writer, but I am old enough to recognize an old argument and threadbare talking points coming from the mouths of unhappy people.
But is there really merit to writing fanfiction? Yes.
It’s a great way for people new to writing to learn how and practice creating engaging narratives.
It’s a great way for young writers to deconstruct their favorite worlds and characters in order to better understand both the creation of fiction and the types of fiction they enjoy writing. (Heads up: published literary fiction also uses tropes and archetypes)
Fanfiction has a built-in audience. This is perfect for any writers who a) are unsure of their abilities and wish to get feedback, b) wish to remain anonymous for various reasons such as being made to feel embarrassed for writing fanfiction but want a modicum of acknowledgment, c) have rich and engaging lives and just want to share some raunchy fantasies because they most certainly aren’t alone, and d) simply enjoy writing things that make others happy.
Have you seen the goddamned news? Let people have some silly little pleasures.
But what about... you know... brain rot?
That’s a real thing. Twitter has it too (have the last 5 years shown us nothing?) And have you met A Dude From Film School?
Let’s be clear: age doesn’t negate brain rot, neither does only writing original fiction. Young people who are Extremely Online, y’all can have brain rot too, it isn’t just Fandom Olds or your Uncle on Facebook.
You should never let your age dictate whether you are able to engage in fandom or fanfiction, but absolutely should in the ways you engage. Not every piece of fic is meant for you to read and not everyone has to praise the things you write, not even your friends.
For the record: writing tropes, even squicky ones, isn’t brain rot. Not believing fandom is racist or gate keeps is though.
The big take away...
Listen.
If you are a writer who primarily writes fanfiction and you want to someday be a published author of real live books, you do need to create original works and engage with writers outside of AO3, Tumblr, Wattpad, or whatever site is still hosting fic when you read this. It’s imperative you see other parts of the creative world. Stretch your wings, experience other ways of doing. Allow yourself to grow beyond what you know.
There is no guarantee you’ll have a career in writing. There is no guarantee your magnum opus will get you a publishing deal, or will even make it out of the slush pile. Writing to a career endgame can be just as detrimental as writing to a trend.
None of this is even getting into the gate keeping that exists in publishing already and only allows in diverse voices when it’s profitable, making fanfiction and online communities all the more important to marginalized creatives.
It’s perfectly alright to just write because you like writing, and it’s perfectly alright if you like playing in other people’s sandboxes. No one but you gets to place value on your hobbies or take merit from you for not writing like you have a MFA in Creative Writin. Writing a 100k Slow Burn fic takes just as much dedication as writing a 60k original novel, they just stretch different muscles.
1 note · View note
I really like your work and I think you are an amazing author. Your fanfics are incredibly original and have more lore than the fandom they are based on ( to me at least). So I am going to ask are you planning to write and original story or a real book.(Sorry about grammer I am not a native speaker.)
Ah, the eternal question.
The answer is surprisingly yes.
On my own time I’m in the process of translating “Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus” into an original story. The first draft is finally complete and I’m not in the editing phase before sending that off. If that works out, I’ll be sure to let people know.
Otherwise, @rhombusgirl and I teamed up a while back to create “Wolves’ Planet” an original webcomic with the story by me and the art by rhombus. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons we’re currently on hiatus and planning if and what we want to do next. Likely, if and when we return, it will be in the format of a visual novel instead.
But yes, that’s where I am as far as original content. Otherwise until any of that moves anywhere there’s always my piles and piles of fanfiction.

Dont Surrender to Writers Block
Cassandra stared at her notes and her sketches with anxious thoughts, analyzing them and then mentally comparing them to the works that inspired her.
"Endgame did it already. "
"I'm basically copying Attack on Titan."
"My heroes are just copies of already popular characters."
Every step of ground she had made on her creative projects made her hesitant. She doesn't want to write garbage. She doesn't want to same-face her characters, give them cliche backstories, or info dump the readers to death. She wants the perfect story that makes people fear the villains, cry when beloved characters die, and inspire others like she's been inspired! She fears embarrassing herself with subpar writing and joining the "bad writers pile". So instead of writing, she just stops.
"You can't write terribly if you don't write at all. "
And with that she pushes her stories and art away, and plays on her phone. Spends more time shopping. Posting inane thoughts on social media. Anything that takes the pressure off, that you do for fun that you can't be judged over.
And soon enough she browses art and writing blogs, and sees new creators pushing their characters out into the world, doing exactly what she wanted to do with her own story.
Villains that are amazingly written. Characters that fail but never stop pursuing their dreams. Plotlines that you could've sworn were written by experts, so real and believable you could see yourself in them.
She is motivated again, and looks at her previous works. It's been a long time since she's even looked at them. A few of them got destroyed from mishandling. Cassandra's heart begins to sink, as she compares herself to these new brilliant creators.
But then she remembers, she's a creator too. Just because she stopped doesn't mean it's all over. The thing about creation, is that it's never really over. You can't "lose your spark", no matter how bad things get. It doesn't matter if everything you've ever dreamed of has been done to death.
These artists are proof that the anxiety can go away. That rough nonsensical pages of notes that bore everyone can eventually evolve into your favorite webcomic, a brilliant fanfic, a collection of beautiful illustrations, or a novel you'll never forget.
So she fast forwarded past her doubts. Past the endless rewrites. Past the first page syndrome. Past the Reblog addiction, and past the fear of making bad content. No perfectionism here, no cautious deletion or omitting of her favorite parts. It's all in. It's all going to be real.
Because creators don't give up, they know in their heart the messages they want to send are important, and will inspire others positively.

The Gamer Hero, Deku Chapter 2
A/N: Wow, thanks for all you guys who left nice reviews and stuff. Sorry it took me so long to update, but I had a play I had to go to a lot of practices for, which was especially annoying because of the four scenes I was in, I only had an important role in one.
To LadyCalus, I have no idea how to do that.
To the user known as Iliekfishes, I would like to say that, while I do not appreciate your tone, I do appreciate that you gave me some criticism. Now, to address what you said, I said that I hadn't seen any My Hero Academia/Gamer fanfiction, which was at the time true. I have, however, checked some out after you pointed that out to me. If it bothers you that much, though, I can edit it if you ask nicely. As for the formatting, I do admit to using Ryuji's The Games We Play as a sort of reference for the formatting, as I remember that that fanfic was very faithful in formatting to the original webcomic and I couldn't remember how exactly it went. Now, while I can deal with you insulting me to a certain point, I would prefer you not call the other viewers names. I also have no clue what "almost all the tension is midigated by cannon" means. Finally, while I didn't mean to make it seem like I was anyone's gift to fanfiction aside from my own, much less God's, I do apologize if I unintentionally gave off that vibe. If you can possibly think of any tips to not sound like a jackass, I would be willing and grateful to hear them out. Sorry for putting you on the spot like that, but you did call people who were nice to me dumbasses, which I very much do not appreciate.
To Voltrasin, I understand your confusion, but the reason why Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady had ? for titles is because Izuku can't see the titles and levels of anyone fifty or more levels over his. Should've made that more clear, sorry. And yes, all heroes will have their hero names as their titles.
Also, I forgot to include map and quest log to the main menu. Fixed it, but I figured I should let you know
Now, on with the story!
xoxoxo
I stared at the pile of sludge in front of me. "Well, kid, seems like you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately for you, I need a disguise." Ping. I looked at the new text box.
A new skill has been created through special action! Repeated exposure to bloodthirst has created the skill 'Sense Bloodthirst' to sense ill will.
Yeah, no thanks. I jumped out of the way as he lunged at me. "Observe"
Name: Kurosawa Shou

WIS: 6
LUC: 6
Quirk: Sludge Body
Emotions: Grateful, bloodthirsty
Status: Sludge body
"Itadakimasu!" the slime said as part of his body shot out and stuck to my ankle. I gasped and quickly bent down to try and tear him off of me before he could do anything more to me. Unfortunately, my fingers slipped through him with little resistance. "Get over here!" he yelled, and I was yanked into him. As I was painfully dragged across the ground, I heard a ping, but I was a little too distracted by the sludge villain trying to eat me or something. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get away from him before he submerged me in himself and started trying to force himself down my throat. It was at this moment that I noticed something in the corner of my eye that I could somehow see perfectly fine.
HP: 184/250
MP: 275/275
And the HP was slowly going down as I struggled with the sludge villain. That was not a good sign. I struggled harder, but I couldn't get out. I thought I was going to die there. I heard another ping and looked up, hoping it was something I could use.
A new skill has been created through special action! Through repeatedly enduring damage, the skill 'Physical Endurance' has been created.
Due to struggling while unable to breathe, your VIT has raised by one!
Crap. Normally that would be good, but I couldn't use them to escape. My HP was still draining and my vision was starting to go dark. "Am I going to die here?" I thought. Just before I blacked out, though, I heard something.
"TEXAS SMASH!"
xoxoxo
When I came to, someone was lightly slapping me on the cheek. "Hey! Wake up!" a familiar voice said. I groaned and looked up to see... "Whew! Thought we lost you there!"
?
LV?
Toshinori Yagi
The name wasn't familiar, but there was no mistaking who the large, muscled, blonde man was. "ALL MIGHT!" I scrambled to my feet, now aware that I had been rescued by my idol. "Can I have your autograph?" He grinned and pointed at my hero analysis notebook, which must have slipped out of my backpack during the struggle. I opened it to the All Might page and beamed at the autograph that he'd written on it. "THANK YOU!"
"Good to hear it, kid! Always great to see a fan! Nowifyoudon'tmindmeIhavetogoturnthisvillainin!" He rushed out that last part while pointing to two soda bottles that the villain was stuffed in and then jumped away. Of course, by then... "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, KID?! LET GO!" I had stupidly grabbed onto his leg.
"If I let go I'll die!" I yelled back over the wind.
"GOOD POINT!" he said. He landed on a nearby roof and let me off. "I have to go now! Knock on the door and someone should let you down!" He made to jump again.
"Wait!" I yelled and closed my eyes. "All my life, I've looked up to you. I've wanted to be a hero just like you. But... my Quirk has only just surfaced. I'm sure it has potential, but it's going to take a lot of training for me to be able to use it as a hero. Even with potential, though, the exams to get into Yuuei are in ten months. Do you think I can still get into Yuuei?" I looked at him for an answer, but... "WHAT!?"
All Might
LV 9
Toshinori Yagi
If it weren't for the title confirming it, I'd have thought that he was a different person. Sure, he was blonde and very tall, but he was almost literally skin and bones! I guess whatever the hell just happened to him to make him a scarecrow was also what lowered his level, but... "Observe"
Name: Toshinori Yagi
Title: All Might
Level: 9
HP: 500/500
MP: 1100/1100
STR: 11
VIT: 4
DEX: 19
INT: 52
WIS: 35
LUC: 9
Quirk: One For All
Emotions: Annoyed, concerned
Status: Totally Fucked Up
"What happened to you, All Might?"
He sighed, then coughed up some blood. "Before I say anything, I need you to promise me you won't say a word of this to anyone. Don't go blabbing about this online, don't tell your friends, don't even say anything to your family. Got it?"
I nodded vigorously. "I won't tell anyone. It's obviously a big deal."
He sat down and raised up his now-baggy shirt, revealing a giant wound on his... everywhere... that could only be described as "Totally Fucked Up." It looked like someone took a fusion between a sledgehammer and a blender to his chest. "I was in a really bad fight five years ago. Took the villain down, but not before getting this ugly thing in return. By all rights, I should've died by now. Luckily, I 'only' got off with constantly coughing up blood and only being able to do hero work three hours a day."
"Toxic Chainsaw couldn't do that do you!"
"You really know your heroes, huh? No, it was another fight. I made sure nobody would hear about it, otherwise there'd have been a lot of panic. Kid, if you wanna be a hero, maybe you should wait a bit. Put it off 'til college or something, when you can actually use your Quirk." He got up and left through the door. I just stood there, stunned. Then I saw a giant explosion. "That's either a villain or Kacchan snapped," I said. "I wonder which one." Ping. "What's that?"
A quest has been created!
A quest?
What Now, Kacchan!?
You just saw an explosion! Maybe you should investigate.
Time limit: 30 minutes.
Well, I had nothing better to do... I looked down to see what I assumed were the rewards.
Completion: 2000 EXP, ?, ?, ?.
Failure: Bakugou Katsuki dies.
Okay. Definitely doing that now. Even if it could be considered vigilante work, I really didn't want Kacchan to die. I decided to run for it.
xoxoxo
When I got there, I saw a crowd of people standing just outside of the safe area. I pushed my way through the crowd to see the sludge villain from earlier in the middle of a flaming street, struggling with someone who was inside him. "Did he get loose when I grabbed onto All Might?" I thought. "Is this my fault?" I looked at the titles.
Sludge Monster
LV 26
Kurosawa Shou
Lord Explosion Murder
LV 14
Bakugou Katsuki
It was Kacchan in there! Before I knew what was happening, I was running in there. Ping. I looked at the text box.
New objective! Save Bakugou.
Welp. Looks like I made the right call. I focused back on the sludge villain in time to see him turning towards me. "You came back for some more, huh, kid? Well I'll kill you if you want it so badly!" The sludge villain looked like he was about to lunge, so I threw my backpack at his face. He flinched and yelled at me. I ran up to him and started tearing at the sludge around Kacchan's face. I heard a ping but didn't stop to look at it. I managed to get the sludge off of Kacchan's mouth. He gasped, coughed a bit, and then yelled, "GET AWAY, FUCKING DEKU! YOU'RE GONNA DIE!" That was either a death threat or he was actually concerned about me. Either way, my response was the same.
"What kind of hero would I be if I let you die?" I would've said something else, but my Sense Danger activated and I jumped back just in time to not get hit by a gooey punch.
"I'LL KILL YOU!" The sludge villain yelled. I would've done something but then I heard a pair of pings.
"I'M PATHETIC! DETROIT! SMASH!" a familiar voice yelled. A rush of air extinguished all of the fires and somehow blew the sludge villain apart while leaving Kacchan untouched. A few seconds later it randomly started raining. I looked to where the blast originated and saw All-Might standing there. "I'm sorry, boys."
xoxoxo
"What were you thinking!? You could have gotten yourself killed!" The heroes were not happy I rushed in there. I didn't really want to pay attention to their lectures, so I just looked at my text boxes. One of them congratulated me on how I made some sort of ripping skill my tearing the sludge off of Kacchan. It didn't look too good, but maybe I could work with it. The other one, though...
Congratulations! The quest What Now, Kacchan!? was completed!
Completion Rewards: 2000 EXP, Increased closeness with Toshinori Yagi, Access to the Skill Grimoir system, 3000 Skill Fragments
Your level has increased by one!
That... was something. At least I was level six now, even if I had no idea what a Skill Grimoir system was. Or what the heck I do with Skill Fragments. All I knew was that a bunch of balls like Munny from Kingdom Hearts swirled around me before getting absorbed into my body after All Might hit the villain, which apparently everyone saw and I had to explain that I had no idea what the heck happened there to the heroes. Turns out that random balls getting absorbed into the idiot kid who stupidly ran into the villain attack is normally a red flag of some sort. Specifically that, apparently. That is a really specific scenario to be wary of. At any rate, they eventually let me go when I promised that I wouldn't do anything too stupid without adult supervision. I was walking home when...
"HEY! DEKU!" A fuming Kacchan shoved himself at my face. "I DON'T EVER NEED YOUR HELP! IF YOU EVER TRY TO BAIL ME OUT LIKE THAT AGAIN, I'LL KILL YOU!" Just to make his point, he let out an explosion aimed at the sky as he walked away. I sighed and continued along my way... for all of five seconds before All Might ran out in front of me.
"I AM HERE!"
"All Might! What are you doing here? Weren't you speaking to the press?"
"HA HA HA HA! I STAND FOR JUSTICE, NOT SOUNDBITES! FOR I, I AM ALL MI-plghght!" He started to go on this big speech before spewing out blood and shrinking down to his civilian form. I gave him a few minutes to clean himself off before he said, "Young man, I came to thank you and apologize. If you hadn't told me that you couldn't use your Quirk, if you hadn't ran in there... I would've been a worthless bystander, too afraid to do anything. So thanks."
"All Might, I-"
"I'm not done. You told me you couldn't really use your power, so when I saw this boy who might as well be Quirkless try to save a life, it inspired me too. There are stories about every hero, how they became great. Most have one thing in common. Their bodies moved before they had a chance to think, almost on their own. And today, that's what happened to you." I'm not going to lie, I teared up at this part. A lot. "Young man, you too can become a hero!"
"I-I don't know what too say! Thank you!"
"And I'm going to give you my Quirk, too!"
"Wait, what?"
"My Quirk. It's called One For All. It's a special power that can be passed on from one generation to the next, cultivated by one user then given on to a successor." He patted the OH GOD wound. "I won't be able to be a hero much longer, so I've been meaning to find someone to give One For All. It's actually why I came here. So, kid. Whaddya say? Wanna be the next All Might?"
midoriyaizuku.exe has stopped working. Reboot? Y/N
Y
"WHAT!?" I yelled.
"I want you to be my successor. I'll also help train you to use your Quirk even if you don't want my Quirk, so don't worry about that."
I bowed. "All Might, I'd be honored!"
"Great, kid! Let's trade phone numbers." All Might asked me for my phone number. ALL MIGHT ASKED ME FOR MY PHONE NUMBER! I gave him my phone number and he gave me mine. "I'll call you when I get everything ready. See you then!" He then walked off. I spent the rest of my walk home in silence, contemplating what just happened today. It was so crazy! But one thing was for sure. One thing that I had to do the second I got home. I walked in the door and immediately said, "Mom! I have to tell you something!"
Mom immediately came running and said, "What is it, honey?" She looked a little nervous.
I gulped. "Mom," I said, "I have a Quirk." The look on her face, that look of relief, joy, and excitement, was something I knew I'd cherish for years to come.
xoxoxo
A/N: Oh, snap! Ain't this a twist! Yeah, I'm way too much of a wuss to deal with the implications of Izuku being able to print money and I didn't know how to get Izuku magic without flat-out introducing magic otherwise, so I just combined the two problems into one solution. Izuku's going to figure out what that Skill Fragment and Skill Grimoir thing does soon, and I won't say anything more until them. Also yes, Izuku is going to make progressively more video game references if I can remember to do it. Seriously, the Gamer needs game shout-outs!
Anyways, I'll see y'all next time! Let's hope I manage to update this thing sometime within a month next!

I made a thing: Longbox
Long time no see, Tumblrinos. Life's been busy but pretty darn good on the balance. More on that another time.
I wanted to share something I built because I needed it to exist, so I figure some folks here might get some use out of it, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's called Longbox, and it's a Chrome extension that serves as a place to keep auto-updating bookmarks for all the stuff you're reading that you're not caught up on. Webcomics? Yep. Blogs? Sure. Epic, multi-chapter fanfic? You betcha!
Basically, I got tired of keeping a browser tab open for months on end just so I could catch up on that cool new webcomic I would discover with a 10-year backlog (looking at you, Octopus Pie <_<), so I finally did something about it.
The concept is pretty straightforward: just go to the first entry on a site you want to read, then click the Longbox icon in your Chrome toolbar and add it to your reading pile. Now, read the site as usual, and Longbox will keep track of the most recent page you read. No need to keep a tab open for days and weeks on end until you catch up, or manually add and remove bookmarks every time you read -- next time you want to dive in, just click on the site in Longbox's reading pile, and pick up right where you left off!
You can install Longbox in the Chrome app store. If there's enough demand, I'll probably port it to other browsers as well.
Bearing in mind that this is a 1.0 release, if you try it and have feedback, I'd love to hear it. Happy reading!

About This Blog (for the New Followers)
Hi all, time for a post to catch all the new followers up to speed... again. (Seriously, idk how y’all manage to put up with my rambling-in-the-tags and occasional rants and disappearances for days to weeks on end due to Grad School Shenanigans, but I appreciate it, I really do.)
Welcome to the multifandom + books-and-writing + personal stuff nonsense!
Instead of repeating stuff that’s in my bio or on my somewhat hidden About Page (idk if that link will work for mobile as I need to get back into coding again), I’m just gonna say some basic stuff and whatnot. Also: If you wanna introduce yourselves to me and tell me what you’re all about and your projects/WIPs/etc, by all means, do so! I’m on summer break and I’ll respond to something as simple as a “hi” atm.
What’s this blog about?: Stuff I like aka fandom stuff, books, writing, cooking, art, comics, languages and linguistics, science and medical stuff, music, etc. etc. I post more when I have free time, but I try to keep a regular queue. I keep specific personal details to a minimum, so you’re not gonna see pictures of my face or my real name, among other things.
Why is everything scrambled together?: Because this is essentially a personal tumblr and I’m too busy to keep things organized by fandom/topic sideblogs, so I just tag things and hope for the best. Feel free to blacklist and filter tags for things you don’t wanna see on your dash (such as #politics or #us politics, for example); I really don’t mind what you do with your leisure time. Also, you’re welcome to ask me to tag for something.
Are you a writeblr?: Ehhh, technically? But I spend a lot of time on worldbuilding and have other things going on (including other hobbies), so I’m not a particularly fast writer, nor do I have a plan for publishing anything for the next few years since I’ll be busy with surviving grad school and getting a stable income. But occasionally I post excerpts and conceptual stuff and I’m always down to talk about writing with other people, especially their WIPs (original fic, fanfic, poetry, scripts, webcomics, you name it; I’m not particularly biased towards one type of writing or another in particular). I’m not so good for being available for major editing or beta-reading things, so FYI.
Also, some personal policies: Since I’m mostly on tumblr for fun and procrastination shenanigans and to see what my friends are up to, I’m not really big on reblogging “we’re all gonna die”-type negativity posts, guilt-tripping posts, or stuff that adds to the tumblr shitscourse (including asks that are trying to start shit). I’m also not good with acting as anyone’s unpaid therapist when a) I’m not a professional and have no idea how to not make things worse, b) I’m already dealing with my own pile of mental baggage atm, and c) I’m too busy to give people the help they may really need. If you’re having a rough time of things, I’m sorry to hear that and I can refer you to professional resources, but I hope y’all understand when I say that I just don’t have the time or energy to respond to all of the stuff I see on my dash literally every day. Boundary crossing is also a major no-go. If you wouldn’t say it to a stranger, why would you say it to someone on tumblr? Be excellent to each other, y’all.
If there’s any other questions, feel free to send them to my ask box or as a PM!

2021 reading challenge
My 2021 Goodreads reading challenge is going well! I decided to start it in July since I have a mountain of books I amassed over the last few years. I haven't read books from January to early July this year, so the challenge really was starting then. And I decided to make it 20 books. I really need to make a dent in that pile of ebooks.
I get most of my ebooks from Kobo. I stalk the bargain section so I can get the books there on sale. It's nice to start a series. The ebooks are also less expensive than their paperbacks editions and waaaaay cheaper than hardback. I would know, I bought 3 hardback books for the price I would have paid for 7-8 full price ebooks. I mostly read on my Kobo e-reader, but I sometimes switch to my phone.
Rules I gave myself :
Use Goodreads to track.
No comics, webcomics, manhuas or mangas count towards that goal.
No visual novels/otome games.
Can be novels, novellas, essays, guides, self-help books.
No fanfic.
So far, I have read 12 books out of 20.
I also read lots of webcomic and I read at least two complete manga series, but again, I only want to track novels. Fanfics authors, as far as I know, don't want their works on Goodreads. Since I track there, fanfics I will read this year do not count to the goal.
Most of the novels I read or am planning to read are originally written in English, so that is the version I am reading. But I want to add some Canadian French or French books as well. So far, only 1 out of the 12 I read was in French.
Anyway. Here's to finishing book 13 (I am 86% in).
What I read so far
Julie Kagawa The Iron Daughter
Julie Kagawa Winter's Passage
Julie Kagawa The Iron Queen
Julie Kagawa The Iron Queen
Julie Kagawa Summer's Crossing
Leigh Bardugo Shadow and Bone
Leigh Bardugo Siege and Storm
Leigh Bardugo Ruin and Rising
Talia Hibbert The Princess Trap

I mentioned that I’m writting a little fanfic for Daughter of the Lilies (a great webcomic by @bludragongal, go read it, if you haven’t yet). This thing is now done :) I hope you’ll enjoy it, even if English is not my native language
Brent goes shopping
"Is tradition", explained Orrig as Thistle added her own token into the inconspicuous looking leather satchel: "Ve do it every solstice. As new one in team you can choose drafting order."
Hesitantly Thistle looked around the group of fellow adventurers and then chose the order that she thought of as the most neutral one existing: "Um... alphabetically?"
“That makes Brent first”, Orrig declared unceremoniously and hold the satchel in his direction.
Brent used one hand to cover his eyes and grabbed with the other one into the bag.
Highly concentrated he shuffled around before he decided which one to pick out. He would have never admitted it openly, but this whole affair made him anxious; he would have no trouble with Lyra or Orrig – but Thistle? Thistle was his worst case scenario.
He could imagine the secret gift exchange vividly in his mind; with Lyra it would go something like “Oh you bought me a bottle of the fancy stuff! That’s exactly what I wanted! Thanks Brent!” followed by a hearty pat on his back. And Orrig would get a box of his favorite sweets and say “Good choice. I like this present” before giving him a hearty pat on the back. But Thistle? When trying to imagine giving her a present, his mind only conjured an image of chirping crickets. He had absolutely no idea what to get for her! So no matter what, he had to pick one of the others.
“How much time do you need to draft, Brent?”, Lyra asked annoyed, so he swallowed and finally grabbed one.
“Great demonstration of patience”, he retorted, while Lyra simply let her hand swiftly dive in and out of the bag in one flowing motion.
“Patience, my <censored>”, she returned: “I don’t need to have patience with people who deliberately waste my time.”
“Enough!”, interjected Orrig and made his own pick: “This solstice tradition, so be nice.”
He gave the satchel over to Thistle who took the last token.
Brent watched her interested as she found out who her secret solstice gift receiver was; did her expression change?
He realized that he hadn’t found out his draft yet and looked at his clenched fist, where the secret still lay inside.
“Ve vill split up now and meet again in four hours at inn for traditional solstice dinner. Don’t forget to stay vithin price limit”, Orrig said and the group split up.
Brent deliberately let himself fall a bit more behind, prolonging the moment before he found out who he got. It was not like he disliked Thistle or anything; but he liked the solstice tradition too much and didn’t want to ruin the mood by disappointing the newest addition of the group. But he probably had no problem, the chances totally were in his favor, the more he thought rationally about it, the less it seemed possible that he got her of all things.
Unconsciously he held his breath when he opened his fist to unveil the pick. A long sight followed.
Nervously Brent scanned the sign of the shop before him, and scratched his arm uncomfortably. He could do this. It was not his kind of store, but he wasn’t some dumb insecure teenager. Compared to the REAL dangers and challenges he faced daily as part of his work, this was… still scary.
‘Don’t be a sissy elf!’, he spurned himself mentally and went into the shop with grim determination.
He just needed to grab some random appropriate book and everything would be alright, wouldn’t it?
Inside the bookstore there were myriads of books crammed into overflowing shelves, with the sole store salesdwarf sitting at a tiny looking desk looking bored. But that immediately changed, as he (or she? One could never be completely sure with those) noticed him. His face lit up brighter than Wu’s scales in a dark night and he happily went into selling mode: “Welcome to ‘Books, books, books!’ the best and sole bookstore in town! What can I help you with?”
The dwarf came over to him, surprisingly speedy and stopped uncomfortably close to him, smiling at him with a grin wide enough to scare a lesser Drath away.
“Erm...”, Brent stammered intimidated: “I want a book.”
“Great!”, the salesdwarf exclaimed, without a hint of sarcasm in his voice: “We have those! Do you have a certain one in mind?”
“Errr… Well..” Brent hesitated because he felt so utterly uncomfortable at this place. It was not like he couldn’t read at all, but his experience with reading till this day had been less than stellar. He was never able to get the appeal of it and the few times he gave this another chance had made him feel inadequate. Somehow lesser. Stupid.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
The stupid half-orc, that wasn’t even able to read out words like extraordinarr... eckstraor… special words without stumbling over his own tongue.
“We have books by R. G. Wells and also books about building wells, the whole line by B. A. Cons’Tructor, to be precise. Does that sound like the kind of reading you are looking for?”, the dwarf inquired.
“Um… no?”
The dwarf’s brow began to twitch slightly, barely noticeable: “How can I be of service then?”
“I’m looking for”, Brent started, unsure how to go on. “...a book. A good one!”
“That’s great”, the seller repeated affirmatively: “So, what do you want to read?”
“Oh… no, no. It’s not for me, but for my colleague!”
“Ahhh”, the dwarf began to nod appreciatively, “so, what does your colleague read?”
“I… don’t know exactly.”
More brow twitching. “Does your colleague have any special interests? What is his or her occupation? Do you know any of the books he or she read?”
“Um… She seems to like flowers a lot. And magic. She’s a mage.”
“Perfect, I can work with this information!”
The dwarf whirled around and picked unerringly books out of the shelves. With a staple higher than his own head he returned to Brent and set it gently down on a stool. He took the first book of the pile and held it in the most scenic way possible, so that the cover was in perfect sight.
It showed a plain, yet beautiful, young maiden in a long flowing dress, who lay in he arms of a handsome and surprisingly ripped mage, as indicated by his long impressive staff and strategically torn robes. Both were surrounded by perfectly red roses, which glistened. Crowning this was the books title; which was to embarrassing for Brent to notice.
“This book is extremely popular with our female readership”, the dwarf explained: “And it has elements that perfectly cover the topics you mentioned.”
“I don’t think that’s the best choice”, Brent said full of doubt: “I don’t think she is very girly… I can’t imagine her being into typical feminine stuff. You now, cooking and fashion and… you know what I mean. She’s more the smart type.”
“No problem!”
The dwarf gently put the book down and picked up the next one. It had no illustration on its cover, just the title “Pride and Maguerites”.
“This one is a bit more… intellectual, a classical story, so to speak. Still very much appreciated by our female clientele.”
Brent scratched his chin: “I’m not sure. Can you tell me a bit what this book is exactly about?”
“Oh, it’s basically about a young aspiring woman, that meets this young suitor who she at first utterly refuses-”
“Pass!”, interjected Brent and underlined his point with a swiping gesture: “I don’t think you got it. She’s like really smart. Smart smart, not pretend smart.”
“Okay, okay.” The salesdwarf took this book and several others from the staple: “If you don’t like belletristic, we still have a nice selection of books with a more scientific approach. This here is by the way a personal favorite of mine.” He gave a book over to Brent, who read its title “Thoughts on taxonomy of the plants by Carolus Linnaeus”. Turning a few pages he quickly realized what was wrong with it: “Were are the pictures?”
“Well, not every book needs to be illustrated, Sir.”
Brent gave the book back, not without visibly wrinkling his nose: “It’s a present. Without pictures it just looks so dull. I don’t want to give something like this, in the end she thinks she is dull herself!”
The dwarf almost sighed, but regained his composition fast enough. He took another book from his staple: “Okay, perhaps this one might be more to your likening. It has some very nice diagrams in it and absolutely no romantic content. And only a smart person versed in the arcane arts would get and appreciate it.”
Brent looked doubting at the dragon-like insignia at the front.
“I don’t exaggerate when I claim, that every decent mage’s library should have its own exemplar of the ‘Assorted Essays by Master Hym’.”
Brent shook his head: “But then she probably has already got her own one, won’t she? I can’t give her a book she already owns, can I?”
“Fine” the dwarf replied and took the bottom book from the pile, which was quite thick and heavy: “I doubt she’d have an exemplar of this book, because it was publishes just a week ago.”
He presented the book to Brent, who inspected the cover. The title was 'Plants – what they tell us' illustrated with a lovely thistle. He turned a few pages and he immediately liked it; there were detailed drawings of plants and charts everywhere and still enough written text, so that it would last a while even for Thistle. He couldn’t suppress a smile: “Now that’s a viable choice. How much?”
“Oh, it’s really cheap, all things considered.”
“Ho much?”, Brent asked again, while a bad feeling started crawling around in his stomach.
“A very low price for such a quality book, just look at all these illustrations!”
“How. Much?”
“Two point five. Almost a steal.”
Brent got his purse out and picked three coins out.
At that sight the dwarf started chuckling: “Is that a joke? Two point five means two hundred and fifty coins!”
“What?! No, that’s way too expensive! I’m on a budget.”
The dwarf couldn’t suppress a sight anymore. He reached into his pocket and looked onto his pocket watch: “Please, just listen, Sir. You could tell me how much money you want to spend and I’ll look if I find something suitable. It’s almost four o’clock now and I want to close in time to celebrate the solstice with my family.”
Brent turned pale: “It’s that late already?! I have to go!” He turned around in place and darted out of the shop. Quickly he ran to the inn, but not without making a quick stop at a market stand with a variety of colorful drapery. Women liked fabric, didn’t they?
“Hello I need something for a solstice present!”, he announced immediatly and hold out his complete budget.
“Oh, okay”, the seller responded mildly confused because Brent disturbed her during packing up for the evening. “Do you want something specific?”
“Just something solstice-y! And please wrap it, it’s a present!”
The seller grabbed some fold-up kerchief-thingy and put it neatly onto some packing paper.
“Please hurry, I don’t have time left!”
The seller swiftly wrapped up the textile and returned to Brent a definitely misshaped package.
Brent grabbed it: “Thanks, great, here!” He dropped the coins into her hand and ran faster than a really slow arrow from Lyra to the inn.
The big city clock was sounding the last chimes of the hour, when he reached his destination. He went into the building, where the rest of the team already sat around a big table on which the first course of the solstice dinner was waiting.
“I’m on time!”, Brent wheezed, gasping for breath. He sat down on the only free chair.
“You are!”, Lyra acknowledged and grinned: “Good that Orrig does not like us to bet, otherwise I would be a few coins poorer now.”
“Stop it”, Orrig interjected: “Ve now solve the secret gift exchange. Thistle, choose order.”
The attention shifted and the hooded mage seemed to shrink a little bit: “.. em, alphabetically again,  please?”
“Is good”, Orrig nodded and put a package onto the table and pushed it over to Brent.
The quarter orc looked at it and then started unwrapping. He found a piece of high quality sharpening leather inside. “Oh… thanks.” He needed a few moments to process the gift, but then he smiled: “I can definitely put that to good use. Thanks!”
“I vought so.”
Lyra cleared her throat: “I’m next!”
She put a big bottle on the table and angled herself on her chair to look sideways: “Lyra! I got you!”
She turned directly around: “Really? Who would have thought, what a surprise!”
Turning back: “I got some of your favorite brandy!”
And again: “Aww, how nice, it’s 'Le fancy stuffe'. You always know exactly what to get for me!”
She grinned and unstopped the bottle with her teeth to treat herself to the first sip.
“People could get themselves?”, Thistle asked, mildly confused: “Doesn’t that kinda undermine the premise of a secret gift exchange?”
“Is part of tradition”, Orrig explained, while shrugging with his shoulders.
“Okay”, Thistle replied and put a small package on the table and pushed it to him: “I.. well… hope you like it, it’s not very special, but I really tried to find something nice… and well.”
The orc opened the packet and found a few balls of green wool and a crotchet hook.
“I heard you like to knit, but then stopped for some reason and so I thought that you maybe would enjoy crocheting?”
“Is good choice”, he replied: “I like this present.” Followed by a light, but not unhearty, pat on her back.
Now all eyes wandered over to Brent. He needed a moment, but then realized: “Oh it’s my turn!”
He threw the misshapen package over to Thistle, who utterly failed at catching and dropped it onto the ground.
“Oh, sorry!”. Brent nervously cleared his throat. Oh, what had he done? He were so fixated on arriving on time, that he didn’t take great care in choosing a present in the end.
‘Great way to ruin the mood, Brent’, he thought to himself: ‘This may be the only thing you’re actually competent at.”
The mage meanwhile carefully unwrapped the paper and gracefully unfolded the fabric. It was a shawl, slightly transparent in the shine of the inn’s light installation and intricately embroidered with little flowers and butterflies. A few moments she did nothing, but then she sniffled.
‘Oh dammit!’, Brent thought, but Thistle suddenly blurted out: “This is soo pretty! One of the nicest things I ever got!” This was followed by an impromptu hug; which she held for around three seconds, before she realized what she was doing. “Oh, I’m sorry! Sorry, sorry, sorry!” She unhugged Brad immediately and jumped up: “I… I… think I need a moment. Alone!” She half ran, half stumbled to the outside, while the rest of the group just locked after her.
Finally Lyra took the word: “Great done, Brent. You made her cry.”
“Shut up, Lyra!”, he returned sharply and folded his arms. But all he could think about was how soft and nice and warm that hug from Thistle had been...
As far as disappointments went, he wouldn’t have minded a repetition of this particular one.

I have a fanfiction account called a-better-name where I wrote a couple of haruhi suzumiya fanfics and a k-on fanfic. idr if i wrote anything else. it’s been a few years. they aren’t great, and one of the haruhi fics was way more ambitious than i could finish, but, you know. I’m not proud of them, but I still think my ideas were really cool and good and i’m not horribly ashamed either.
I was antiscrub on zrpg.net and i role-played as my zelda ocs who were all objectively good and cool and i sort of miss it but all my threads died and i’m too lazy and frustrated to resurrect them or go fishing around for new partners.
