Lily Orchard / CD-Call doesn't understand game design

During a stream aired on the 17th of April 2025, Lily Orchard shared these homebrewed class features for 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons. I'm presenting them here with minimal commentary; I feel like they speak for themselves. Lily did not make it clear if these options are meant to replace, or to complement, existing class features

Rules for Fighter:

By Lily's admission, "Flurry stance" is equivalent to how two weapon fighting currently works in 5th edition (2014) rules

"Vorpal" likely means that a successful critical hit results in the opponent being decapitated

Rules for Arcane Spellcasters:

Wizard (mage):

The two "inspiration" characters provided, Dynaheir and Imoen, are both characters from the Baldur's Gate series of RPGs. It should be mentioned that Dynaheir is an Invoker (Evocation specialist) ; in tabletop 2nd Edition (and the Enhanced Edition of Baldurs Gate 1) Dynaheir is incapable of casting Sleep, as Invokers are barred from casting any Enchantment spells.

Many of the other abilities in the above paragraphs are named after high level class abilities exclusive to Baldur's Gate 2

"Cacofiend" is the name of a 7th-level spell in AD&D 2nd edition that summons a powerful demon, devil or yugoloth (daemon). It is unclear if the player character sacrificed in Ritual of Doom may be resurrected normally.

How far from the truth would it be to say that while LOrch mightn't have a deep hatred of certain ethnic groups (such as East Asians, Jews, blacks & native folks despite identifying as part of the last), she is remarkably tone deaf on racial matters & similarly sensitive matters, the likes of which are a poor match for her combined with the old fashioned notions surely swayed by those of her boomer parents?

Now I've heard it all from my time in the anti-Lily circles. She's bad because this. She's bad because that. She's bad because leftist. She's a conservative.... If there is one truth Lily does live by, it's this, "Lily only cares about Lily." Once you understand that the rest follows. If you've watched Steven Universe videos without a pair of red tinted goggles, not only is it all over the place but often contradicts a lot of her supposed beliefs. Because she doesn't believe in anything, if she hates it, no blow is too low, and not stretch is too far. If she likes it, no praise is too silly and no excuse less than ironclad. Anything in the middle might as well be nothing at all. So I'd believe she isn't racist as much as remarkably ignorant to suffering or even basic information on anything that does not land square in her realm of thought.

Though I do have to question if this is that same Anon that has been talking about Lily's parents before... cause, like yeah, they failed her. Lily is like 33 now... I feel like bringing up her folks all the time sorta cheapens the terrible she's managed on her own. Like she was only every a byproduct of someone else and shifting the blame off her and onto her folks as a result. Not to say that's what you're doing, or deny her parents' influence, mind you, but more that we are inching close to painting Lily as always being a victim no matter what she does. Lily spends a lot of time looking for outs. Let's not give her this one.

Probably a stupid question, but why does Lorch insist that magic systems are “fake” literary tools?

I mean, you kind of got it on this one. Though for its own sake, I'll take a shot at why Lily thinks it's fake.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a game. As such, the rules of The Force are game-ified. From here, it's absolutely trivial to either reject or embrace both sides of the force. Now she's got it in her head that Anakin is a bitch for falling to the dark side, L mis-imput buckerino. Also just ignore that love is what pulled Anakin into becoming Darth Vader....

You can have a magic system say a lot of things about your characters. Like an otherwise bubbly and friendly character using dark magic as an early warning sign that the personality is a veneer for their real one. But this train of thought is a little outside Lily's comprehension.

Learning from Lorch: The Importance of Power Scaling.

It's been a while since I went all unprompted, but I feel I got a good one. See, Lily has been on a tear for a while about how powerful games like BG2 and WoW let you become. This is mostly fair. After all, they are video games that are meant to get that dopamine flowing. The thing is, she also takes this attitude into her writing...

Now, don't get it mixed up. This is a very understandable mistake to make, as it's not a black and white, one and done kinda thing. In narrative, the only one size fits all solution is that you never ever want someone who can easily just fix the problem. Conflict is the beating heart of most all stories, be it small and interpersonal or a scope that encompasses a whole multiverse... I won't insult anyone's intelligence by pointing out why you'd probably not want to get the heart to quit beating ASAP.

The tricky thing is that all stories are built differently. What counts as powerful in one story doesn't translate over to another cleanly. It gets even more tricky when a character is powerful in the obvious sense, like the Avatars from the last Airbender fame, who are unquestionably the strongest of their universe by default... again, at least from a straightforward attacking power angle.

To understate the complexity, you do want your protagonist capable, but not too capable. One of my best examples outside of combat shit would have to be Dr. House. Man could give a patient a once over, ask a half question, stare blankly at the wall before sniffing twice, and he'd then tell you your exact correct diagnosis along with your life history AND your favorite color. He's just that good at being a doctor. If he wasn't a titanic asshole or his coworkers took his words as gospel, you could reasonably pack the whole series into a feature film and it would be boring as shit unless thumbing thorough a book of rare diseases is your version of a good time. This is the importance of balancing your characters for your story. Without it, you kinda just don't have one...

Though now that we have an idea of how it's done right, let's look at how lorch is wrong. all of her characters are guilty! So much for the broken clock method... Though to conceed any credit, not all of them suffer it to the same extent. The biggest two are Niva and Alaina, simply because they function on equal parts "noobie logic" and the rule of cool.

To explain at some length (I've gone deep on both before so a little yadda yadda is called for) they both have powersets that are based more on it being possible than anything inherent to the characters. Alaina book learned her way to being stronger than Darth Vader, and Niva is the strongest avatar ever because-! Oh, I forgot she hates being the Avatar. Most of their feats are of the mindset of someone who knows it's possible rather than how it works in the universe. Somebody that hears that it's possible to bloodbend without a full moon, and their OC can just do that. Hears that you can resist the dark sides corrupting influence. Therefore, her character does so indefinitely with little trouble because dark side powers are cooler. Like, if I didn't already know of a lack thereof I would wanna see her thought process in giving lil baby bean Niva the inclination for SUMMONING BOILING RAIN TO INDECRIMINATELY KILL HUNDREDS IN ONE OF THE MOST AGONIZING WAYS POSSIBLE. Geneva suggestion I fuckin suppose... character consistency be damned we have an ego needs stroking.

Lily seems to hate basic character building as much as lore. Which, to add my ever important qualifier statement, wouldn't be the end of the world if she was not both in a career path where she NEEDS to understand this shit, and also constantly tooting her own horn. This is a problem because she has been a media critic for decades and does not have a grasp on it.

Though for your more general statement on many critics ending up a cautionary tale, Ten thousand percent. In short, ego is one hell of a drug, and many don't need more than one hit. Names, both big and small, can suffer this curse.

I could list examples, but we talk about ballooned egos a lot, so instead, some practical advice. If anybody wants to break into the YouTube sphere, it goes both ways... Your audience is not entitled to you, but you also aren't entitled to an audience. Do your best not to let yourself forget that at it's core the relationship is transactional. Sure, everybody has reasons beyond that, but the reality of the business is as such. You aren’t going to pay to see a comedian who won't tell jokes. You shouldn't give compliments to a chef who won't cook. You shouldn't heed the advice of a coach who gives no direction. You are not a bad person for ditching an internet personality who fails to educate or entertain.

You Know Who Related Question: Can you explain what it means to “engage with a story on its terms” and why it’s important to do so?

Well, it's more complicated than it sounds. Though not so complicated that it makes no sense. It's taking in multiple viewpoints and essentially culling them for relevance. You can and should paint with multiple brushes, but you shouldn't use all brushes.

Easy and popular example for why the time it came out matters, Lord of the Rings. Today, it's basically bog standard, but that's not a fair dismissal. This is where you must remember that the films are over two decades old, with the books edging close to 8 decades old! Even now, it still holds up, and its influence has given us only better and better high fantasy. The fact that something so old is still the baseline is a truly monumental feat!

Without letting things exist on their own terms, you can compare anything to anything. Lord of the Rings is a pretty shit medical drama compared to Dr. House, for example. This is a tactic Lily has used saying things like Cowboy Bebop is less popular than Friends... just ignoring the difference in place of origin, genre of shows, and time of airing. I and others have rightfully called the comparison out as comparing a perfectly cooked and seasoned steak with all the best sides to a bag of potato chips, calling the chips better because they are cheaper and the prep begins and ends at opening the bag. You do have to factor in the genres and cultures things come from.

The last bits to get a grasp on author intent, but also to not... I've got a good example for this paradox, though. If you don't read too far into the works of Lovecraft, they are relative masterworks of the fear of the unknown and cosmic horror.... though if you know the kind of man H.P. Lovecraft was, the books lose gas fast, as it's all easily explained by him being a remarkably racist man who feared anything he didn't understand and coincidentally didn't understand a lot. Now remember the SU is Garbage vid is primarily about explaining how Rebecca Sugar made Nazi propaganda, except this requires leaps in logic. To yadda yadda a longer explanation, if you don't land on ants, most of what we see is not far off from basically any military. The only way you can land on Nazi is to just really WANT to land on Nazi. Add the context of Rebecca's heritage in there and even uncharitably the Nazi comparison is fucking WILD.

From here, you just do all of it and don't do it selectively. Case and point the forgotten gays vid of Lily's. To just blow the unfair comparison wide open before lingering on the bits, most all of Lily's examples just didn't air outside of Canada. They aren't forgotten, to most of the world they didn't exist. With that out of the way, it goes without saying the Canada first cartoons vs. The action slop already isn't what's happening, and the comparisons are jank. When you are trying to equate the representation, you can't play up the 2000s and play down the 2010s as, frankly, a lot of context lies in the political climate. Dion was pretty revolutionary for being a gay man in a kid's show in 2001! The thing is... saying he's equivalent or superior to lumity in the 2020s by comparison is frankly just blazing through a lot of real-life strife to get here! It's never at any point been Braceface vs. Owl House, every show Lily listed has been leading to Lumity! She is overstating the impact of the old shows while downplaying the new like this wasn't a linear progression that was pushing and fighting the whole time. You have to accept that for all the good that Braceface, 6teen, Lloyd in space did... they were all weak sauce and trivially censored. They weren't ever going to not be. That was the only way to sneak it by executives. Even the weakest of new stuff is what the old hoped and prayed it could be! And even then, it is still kinda weak, save lumity and catradora... The gay in Steven Universe is basically exclusively space rocks, and Korrasami is implied...

Always meet things on its own level. While there is one last thing I can talk of that will get its own post nearly this long down the line, this has run on long enough. Hopefully, this clears up at least a bit of what judging a story on its own terms means.

I’ve recently learned about Pink King and how Sai has a sizable hatedom herself — not nearly as big as Lorch’s, but still fairly sizable.

And I’ve seen Pink King’s response video to her steam reacting to his Hazbin Hotel critique video — and I think it proves a theory of mine.

I will say some of it is overblown. Sai has a hatedom, but I look at what they say, and it's mostly just the same three things.

I'll let you in on a secret. The greatest enemy you'll ever have will ever have is just out of sight, hiding right behind your eyes, yet not outside the confines of your skull.

Sai will have haters, always. Most people with any popularity do. Fuck even I got one! The thing is, it's only when they get to you that anything really happens. As long as you're not breaking any rules, there's only so much that can be done. Prime example, I only said that Lily shouldn't air out her wife's financial woes online and called her dumb. She told me to kill myself.... needless to say, one of us has a tumblr, and one doesn't.

I can see a case where Sai and King destroyed each other, sure. I doubt it'll happen. I feel it simply isn't in eachothers best interests to have a video war, and while I can't speak for Pink, I don't feel like Sai is one to crash out at max volume, at least not on anything pink has on her.

This isn't to say the public can't do anything. Though in the game of mud flinging, the only people who are at risk of infection are the people furiously scrapping the mud off. If you have the patience to just let it dry and flake off or the wherewithal to step away for a cleansing shower, you'll be fine.

It depends on how ride or die you are on it. Especially if you don't have a solid reason for it. With just a dash of checking yourself.

Now, if I had to guess, we are worried about backlash. The best you can do other than just keeping it to yourself is to be upfront about your stake in it and explain your reasoning really well.

To loop it back to our favorite punching bag, Lily. She often doesn't or poorly explains herself and rides on these poor explanations like its scientific fact. The "forgotten gays" video springs as a premium example. Calling what are in many ways pittances and punchlines as good as real rep.

How bad does one’s parenting have to be to have all three of your children enter adulthood fucked up? Taking a Shot in the Dark.

But I'm sure you can absolutely disregard Lily's video about Playersexual, for it likely leaves out the fact that games are inherently experienced differently from other media.

Playersexual NPCs are an answer to a very specific question. How many gates of entry are we gonna put on this optional dialogue that functionally doesn't even need to be here? I won't argue that averting it makes for better characters, but we are rubbing up on player agency and gratification, which is another and equally valid concern.

I've been covering her long enough that I'd be surprised if she isn't asserting that Playersexual is always bad. I'd argue that at some point, we should reflect if we are actually asking for a little too much. Playersexual may not always be the right choice, but to throw it out is to also deny players freedom. A one size fits all solution is just not feasible. While Playersexual works handily for baldur's gate 3, being closely related to D&D and the absolute freedom of it. It does not work for Dragon Age, which the lore and deep characters are more the draw.

I'm open to being wrong about her video, but I don't think I will be. Somebody who can tolerate her voice can correct me if needed.
