what I love about pikmin, post #363890372897:
It’s such a small thing but I ADORE how despite them being little aliens with extremely advanced space travel and such it all feels so real and grounded. The main character is a middle aged dad who works a crappy job to support his family. His coworker is some younger guy who REALLY doesn’t want to be there. There are problems like food shortages and debt and crappy technology that doesn’t work properly and I just. Never realized how refreshing it is to have a universe with high tech stuff that’s not a utopia. The pikmin world sucks just as much as the real world and it’s so oddly refreshing. I dunno if any of this yapping makes sense but it just makes everything 10x better. Sure there are little plant men you have to command to defeat giant bugs but there’s also the equally potent threat of your wife gambling all your money away and your coworker getting so fed up with everything he just books it for the caves and tries to kill you

Louie isn’t evil.
Or: what Pikmin 4 tells us about his character.
BIG WARNING FOR PIKMIN 4 SPOILERS! (and the rest of the series)
———
I want to preface this by saying that I am in no way trying to be the end-all, be-all of character interpretations, but Pikmin 4 to me, at least, confirms the suspicions I’ve had since playing Pikmin 2 and 3 all those years ago that Louie ISN’T secretly evil, or possessed, or whatever else. He’s just… Louie. And I think that’s interesting in and of itself.
1. Olimar himself vouches for him, and clearly doesn’t think he’s a bad person.
Tumblr media
Say what you will, but I’m inclined to think Olimar is a decent judge of character. Clearly he’s worked with Louie for enough time to see that while he’s not very good at his job, he’s not intentionally so— at least not in a malevolent way (will get more into this later). He also wants you to forgive him for Olimar’s sake, which can be read as self-sacrificing (as Olimar is known to be) but I also think hints at the soft spot he has for Louie.
It's also worth noting that he states during a end-of-day conversation that he told Louie that, since he's a new employee, he should do everything Olimar does... including throw castaways into the onion. Interesting that Louie took this so literally, but it does provide an explanation for why he kidnapped the Koppaites beyond "he's evil and crazy".
2. He really, REALLY loves his grandma.
Tumblr media
Like, wow. He talks about her SO MUCH both in his Piklopedia entries and also elsewhere in the game. It's interesting. Worth noting is that he never mentions any other family members- unlike Olimar, who talks about his wife and each of his children independently. I've said this before, but the content of a lot of these entries implies to me that Louie was mainly raised by his grandma, likely since birth. And given some of her emails in Pikmin 2, assuming they're also canon to Pikmin 4's timeline... Well, Louie certainly had an interesting upbringing. But he clearly loves her all the same.
3. He has a mischievous streak and tends to do things on impulse.
Tumblr media
This was already fairly obvious from the previous games, but I think it's worth noting that this game confirms that he's... would immature be the right word? In any regard, he doesn't seem to see himself as a "grown-up"- when in all likelihood he is. Personally, as a 22-year-old, I find that pretty relatable as I often think of myself as younger when in reality I am by all definitions an adult. This, along with his grandma still being around, makes it pretty much certain that Louie is a lot younger than Olimar and the president, likely in his early to mid twenties. Being a bit of a goofball isn't really out of the ordinary, all things considered.
Tumblr media
THAT BEING SAID, he's clearly capable of practicing self-restraint when he wants to. What he says here about the red Pikmin is pretty significant, since we know he's willing to eat just about anything- but clearly he has some reservations about creatures that are friendly and helpful. Which leads to...
4. He loves dogs and fluffy things.
Tumblr media
Same. But he doesn't even consider eating Moss, Oatchi or the Ancient Sirehound, showing that his creature-eating habits stop at things he recognizes as useful. He clearly also holds affection for things that are soft and fuzzy, and says as much.
5. He is so autism.
Tumblr media
He plays with fidget toys. He loves certain textures and sounds. This guy is stimming all over PNF-404!!! I think this also lends some explanation for why his behavior is what it is- things like taking Olimar's suggestion to do as he does super literally even after crashing on an alien planet, his hyperfixation on cooking and tendency not to communicate and incorrectly interpret situations (thinking the Koppaites are kidnappers in 3, running away from you in 4). He could even be low or no empathy as well, explaining why it takes a hot minute to get him to understand why people are upset with him about something.
Interestingly this game also makes it clear that Louie wants to live on the planet, or at least thought he did while you were chasing him down, which makes a lot of sense when you consider that he doesn't really seem to fit in back on Hocotate. I, too, wish to run away to an alien world with all of the things that I like and no other people, so I get you, Louie.
6. He hates his boss and his job, and the golden pikpik carrot incident was likely premeditated.
Tumblr media
This probably looks bad, but honestly? As a fellow work-hating anti-capitalist schmuck I get it. The president is for all intents and purposes a huge asshole, from sending Olimar straight back to the planet after selling his ship to not caring that Louie got left behind, just wanting to find the rest of the treasures. I doubt he is very kind to his employees, and doesn't seem very good at running the business. Definitely a funny character, but if he were my boss I would absolutely want to punt him into the sun.
From some other entries he clearly wants to sell certain things to accrue money, but it's for things like getting better kitchen tools and following his dream to have his own cooking show. Clearly being a freight driver isn't what Louie actually wants to do with his life, and he could not give less of a shit about what happens to the company. Very short-sighted on his part, but also again, yeah I get you Louie.
7. He... doesn't like the color red for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, I'm not even really sure what to make of this. Is it because it reminds him of the Hocotate ship? Or does he just not like the color? Would be very interesting considering that it's Olimar's signature color. Perhaps that's at least part of why he attacks you in Pikmin 2- though that's speculation for another day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also funny to me is his comments on the black-colored treasures. We know blue is his favorite color, but I guess he's also a bit of a goth at heart. Lol.
In conclusion.
I think Louie isn't written or intended to be evil, and Pikmin 4's portrayal of him was intentionally written to confirm this. He's just, as some have said, an agent of chaos, but that doesn't make him a bad person. Just an autistic 20-something working a shitty job he doesn't care about, who loves his grandma and has a mischievous streak and a hyperfixation on food. At least from what I can interpret, ymmv!

louis from pickled mint two
(alternate version, joke sketch, and rambling under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started this drawing in August or September, got as far as less than half the lineart, then never got around to finishing it. I rarely finish art after abandoning it but then I played Pikmin 2 and really loved it, so I went back to this. Louie wasn't my favorite character when I started this but he is now, so that was another motivator. I really like how this came out but it wasn't easy, I had to constantly reference that render of Mario smoking a blunt for both the perspective and shading. I know this sounds like a joke but please believe me when I say I made the sketch over a traced version of that image because I couldn't get the perspective right for the life of me. Anyways, as much as I love how this came out, I can't help but feel like I made the most social media site-unfriendly image ever and the quality will be obliterated the moment I hit post. I apologize in advance for that. (the colors may also display differently on certain screens, as it looks different on my phone)
I also included an alternate version that's more akin to what I initially envisioned before I tried coloring everything because I still like how it looks. The sketch is something silly I made after unlocking the Louie's Dark Secret cutscene a few days ago, but I've had this joke in my head ever since I learned about the plot of Pikmin 2. The "Houngry" was taken from this meme.

pikmin doodles btw. y'all should be watching frankenbugs' pikmin 4 streams
[Image IDs/descriptions under cut!]
[Image 1 ID: A black-and-white digital ink drawing of Olimar from Pikmin. He is in casualwear consisting of a plaid button-up with cuffed sleeves, khaki pants, loafers, and a watch. He is looking off to the side with one hand on his hip and the other holding a beer can. His dog Bulbie is asleep behind him, wagging his tail. End ID.]
[Image 2 ID: A black-and-white digital ink drawing of Collin from Pikmin 4. He is looking forward with a haunted expression, standing in a neutral pose. He is wearing a crop top that reads "GIYA GRADUATE UNIVERSITY" with the Rescue Corps logo behind it. End ID.]
[Image 3 ID: A black-and-white digital ink drawing of Olimar and Dalmo from Pikmin 4. Olimar is crouched in a fight stance, swinging a red Pikmin like a flail, while Dalmo approaches with his back to the viewer, scowling and holding a knife. End ID.]
[Image 4 ID: Panel 1 of a black-and-white, digital ink comic. Olimar, dramatically shaded and looking down with a solemn expression, says, "I miss my family, Tocha. I miss them a lot." End ID.]
[Image 5 ID: Panel 2 of a black-and-white, digital ink comic. There is a top-down shot of Olimar, still looking solemn, surrounded by a concerned-looking Schnauz holding a clipboard to his side, a quietly uncomfortable-looking player character (named Tocha) in front of him, and a happily oblivious Oatchi to the other side. End ID.]
[Image 6 ID: Panel 3 of a black-and-white, digital ink comic. Everyone is in the same positions as the previous panel, and Tocha turns her head to point at Oatchi, saying, "...talk to my dog." Oatchi gets right in Olimar's face, panting and wagging his tail, fogging up Olimar's helmet. Schnauz continues to watch with an expression of concern, while Olimar remains in the exact same solemn pose. End ID.]

I’m playing through all the pikmin games and oh my god Louie is the character of all time
This man has:
- Bankrupted a whole business because he ate thousands of dollars worth of carrots
- That almost gets his boss killed by loan sharks, and his boss has to hide under a bridge, befriend animals, and eat grass to avoid detection
- Blamed the carrot thing on a giant space rabbit and his boss actually believed him
- Wrote detailed entries on how to cook and eat every creature on the planet
- According to his grandma he used to go out to the backyard as a kid and eat bugs
- Went through the Den of Dreams, a super deadly cave, BY HIMSELF to hoard treasure
- Mind melds with a giant spider to try to kill his coworker and boss to keep said treasure
- Calls himself the King of Bugs
- When he later gets saved by the Koppai team, he steals all of their food supplies, almost dooming them and their ENTIRE CIVILIZATION to death by starvation
- He also steals Charlie’s rubber ducky for no reason
- When Olimar confronts him about this he immediately runs away
In conclusion NINTENDO PLEASE LET HIM BE IN PIKMIN 4
I want to see more Louie Crimes™️

surprised that i havent seen any posts about how the rescue base camp is Autism Central
so many of the castaways have fun little quirks and they are Very Normal about their interests, hence why they dropped everything to go to a mystery planet in the hopes of discovering things about their Specific Field Of Study
Outside of just listing every castaway's special interest, specific highlights are:
Bernard - Has a distinct speaking style that implies poor volume control. Seems to not pick up on social cues (entirely unaware that Santi doesn't like him), might be poor at communicating tone himself. Invented a meal-in-a-cup one time, and is also a picky eater, so he probably has sensory issues.
Pitunia - I'm certain that at one point, she only gave me one (1) line (she started telling me more about her Onion Theories later on), telling me to go away so she could study the onion.
Komo - Makes comments about being bad at conversation and making eye contact - her dialogue is written with a pretty flat/monotone tone of voice. Talks a lot about her study of water. Not Even Subtle.
Twyla - Talks about being overwhelmed by the environment. Seems to prefer theory to practical work, mostly because she hates to get dirty.
Kit - Loves to talk about geology!! Uses cute themed terms like "oh pebbles". Needs to be super thorough and exhaustive with his papers, so he submits them a bit slowly... he also frequently apologises for when he starts to infodump :(
François - He wants to be friends with plants.......... the trait of, like, relating to/preferring the company of non-human things......
Sheeba - Is very dedicated when she decides to do something, and seems to be pretty insistent on doing things the way she thinks is correct, sometimes to the point of (self-perceived) pushiness.
Keesh - Infodumps about geology to Kaia. Likes planning and scheduling, and struggles when her plans are disrupted. Enjoys Kaia's company while "quietly working"/not really interacting (parallel play type behaviour).
Chowder - So absorbed in his real-estate work, he rushes into dangerous locales, and works through the entire night, but misses social cues (expected his other workers to have the same work ethic until he was informed otherwise).
Molly - Uses personal language that doesn't have an obvious meaning (describes things as POPping a lot), makes "weird" content but doesn't get why it's perceived that way. Seems to follow trends without entirely understanding them.
Beaux - Super dedicated to acting. Needs real life experience to fully get into a role - maybe either a perfectionism thing (he needs to get every detail right), or that he struggles to imagine things.
Grace - Speaks in her own whimsical way. Mentions not doing well with noisy environments. Much prefers to be in her own environment in space.
Horatio - I dunno it's just vibes.
Bonus ADHD haver Kaia - spaces out frequently, forgets tasks and struggles to work on things long-term, has poor impulse control, struggles with planning ahead and with studying more complex subjects.
i wonder what else other players might have picked up on :)

This trend seemed fun so I thought I'd make a little Pikmin Series Version! It may or may not have been done before, but this time I made it, so it's stil valid!
If you know Pikmin well/know the answer, please don't say it, but you can still reblog to pass this on.
Feel free to put what you think the answer is in the replies or in the tags of a reblog. Have fun if you choose to play, see you next week with the answer!

Am i the asshole for staying behind on an uncharted planet
I (23M) have been a new hire at this shipping company for around three months and it has been absolutely horrible. The company has us work outrageous hours and there is only one other employee. A month ago that employee (my mentor) went on a vacation and ever since then the president had me switch over from simply organizing packages to making full deliveries. On my first trip, I was attacked by a group of space bunnies and the company was sent into debt because of it. They told me the route was safe and secure, however, it was clearly not the case. The important cargo was destroyed and the remaining debt is now more than a hundred years' worth of salary. The company is going under and the president is even accusing ME of doing something. I have no clue what he is talking about and am very frightened by the experience.
Now then my mentor (38?M idk) comes back and talks about how he was hit by a meteor and crashed. It took him a whole month to recover his parts and just barely made it back. Before he could even see his family the company's appraisal AI scanned a memento he yoinked from the crash site and now the president thinks its a great idea to send two deliverymen to search for treasures to sell. Why do we even have an appraisal AI I don't even know. So now me and this captain i've know for about two months is being sent towards an uncharted planet.
Then we crash. There was a blizzard and I am sent flying into the snow. I am tired, hungry, and lay down on the ground as I contemplate my life. A long story short we reconvened and it turns out this planet is FULL of hostile life! Creatures as tall as me just waiting to eat us. Holy fuck. My mentor is taking this as a normal occurrence???? He spent a month on this planet??? The hell????
So after fighting off creature after creature-some as tall as space pups while others as tall as buildings, we somehow get enough pokos to pay back the COMPANY'S DEBT. We weren't even paid overtime and I think my mentor GOT A PROMOTION? We barely had enough supplies for one person so I started taking back some of the local creatures to eat. (DM me if you want some of my recipes!) . We wake up as soon as dawn breaks and this planet's day and night system are so unlike my own planet. By the time it's 10 PM its Nighttime! Dawn is around 6 AM!
My mentor has been relatively nice. He gets my silence and for that, I am grateful he doesn't have me talk a lot. Cons: He forgets about me really easily. Usually, he has me just follow him while we explore and at some points, I feel as if I could have just stayed at the ship and slept and would accomplish the same amount of work. It is aggravating to be woken up so early and told to just follow him around.
After another long expedition I am about 10 seconds away from passing out our ship's appraisal AI (who has been so snippy with both of us) blares out that we should return home now. The thing is, after so long of being on this planet I realized that I prefer this planet more than slaving away at that delivery service. The same service that would send me straight first toward a hive of space rabbits for my very first mission. So I lagged behind a bit.
In my lagging behind, my mentor starts up the ship and leaves. At first, I am shocked. He actually did that. Holy fuck he left me on this planet. Sure our suits were upgrades to filter out the oxygen just before we left and I could last for months if not years....it was still shocking to me. I could not help but watch the sky as he blasted away. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise!
I walked for a long time, resting in safe areas to conserve my stamina and eating the creatures I knew were edible. There was a lot of experimentation here and there and I missed the spices of back home. I just knew that a certain creature would taste way better if I added in a couple more condiments! (Remember! DM me for my recipes!)
While exploring one of the caves, a giant spiderlike foe kidnapped me and placed me on it's head. It was so cute! Like riding a weird dog.
It was nice being with the big spider. It gathered some ancient technologies that were perfect for my survival. None of the other creatures seemed to bother the two of us and it was nice to know that there was someone else on this planet that understood us. Still, I was tired and after what felt like days, my suit's forced sleep mode kicked in. I have no clue what happened afterward nor how many days I was asleep but the next thing I knew was that my mentor was right in front of me making sure I was okay.
He says that he came back for me with the help of our boss, but I could see the poko in the president's eyes as the ship went over finances with him.
They killed the spider to 'save' me. The spider went on full attack while I was asleep on it and the appraisal AI thinks I was in control of it despite being unconscious. At least the captain think's I didn't do it...
They then told me that there was no third seat on the ship and that I will be sleeping in the cargo hold until they got every single treasure on this planet. I am pretty sure that's a space OSHA violation but at this point, I have been in so many life-threatening dangers that I gave up counting. At least they don't expect me to help out because I am 'recovering'. They are content to let me stay by the ship and I have been using this time to perfect my recipes with the supplies they got from back home.
