So Gent tips 💌 First of all I would recommend staying in the Het Zuid area, it is very central and lots of nice things around it. Sint-Pieters is also a nice though. For cute cafes I would recommend Le Pain Quotidien and Gust. If you like history and culture I would take a look in St Bavo's Cathedral, it is free entry and really pretty inside. You can also go up the tower for €2 and get a view of all over Gent. Similarly you can get into SMAK (the Museum of Contemporary Art) for €2 if you are under 25. If you’re looking for free things to do I would definitely check out the graffi street, it’s on Werregarenstraatje. Some nice parks are Muinkpark, Citadelpark and Sint-Annaplein if you just want to chill or eat some food. UGent have a botanical gardens which is free for everyone and Gravensteen castle is a landmark to keep a look out for. I think it’s also nice just to sit by the river in the centre, you see lots of students here and the buildings around are very pretty. If you want to find thrift stores I like Think Twice and Lost and Found best but in Sint-Pieters every fri, sat, sun there is a flea market if you’re there one of those days and are into that kind of thing. For nightlife it depends what you’re looking for. To just get a few drinks I would recommend ‘t Gouden Mandeken. It is a tavern style pub with a cozy, chilled out atmosphere but not a party venue. Gazon is a really cool outdoor bar if you’re looking for those vibes but it’s a bit out of the city centre. Check out to see if Le Bateau has any events on for when you’re there if you’re looking for a party. If you have anything else you’d like recommendations for like restaurants with specific food let me know :))
omg thank you so much i love you<3333 this is incredible!! my friends (and I) are super happy with all the recommendations we will try to do all of it and i will definitely tell you what we thought of the city :) im super excited
we already booked our place to stay bc there were not a lot of cheap options but i hope the area is nice too i think it’s near sluizeken (?)

AERTSEN, Pieter Flemish painter (b. 1508, Amsterdam, d. 1575, Amsterdam) Peasants by the Hearth 1560s Oil on wood, 142,3 x 198 cm Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp Pieter Aertsen was a Dutch painter who had a workshop in Antwerp for several years. He painted altarpieces, but also peasant scenes with a moralizing undertone and kitchen still-lifes with religious themes in the background. He continued this work following his return to Amsterdam in around 1557, concentrating henceforth more on the latter genre. This painting may have been produced during his Amsterdam period. The subject of the work has long been debated, although we can be sure it is not simply a peasant scene. It was once believed to be a portrait of the artist's family, but that hypothesis was rejected some time ago. The scene has all the elements of a rural booze-up. Much drink is being consumed, sausages grilled and bacon fried. There are festive biscuits on the table and a tray of waffles. Crowns like the one worn by the boy were used on the Feast of Epiphany, but also during other winter festivities, including Shrove Tuesday. Neither holiday is being celebrated here, however. The bird-cage next to the door on the left tells us that the scene is taking place in a house of ill repute, such as a tavern or brothel. Other elements combine to suggest the latter - the way the young man places his arm around the girl's waist, the copious eating and drinking, the aggression symbolized by the man with the two weapons, and the foolishness reflected by the king's crown. Like many of Aertsen's paintings, this work has both a moralizing and admonitory content, revealed by the presence of three men of different ages, each symbolizing a generation, around one woman. There is some remarkable innovation in this painting. The figures in the foreground are shown full-length in the middle of the small space, which, together with the monumental format, testifies to the emancipation of non-religious themes in painting around this period.

Maastricht
September 28th
Walked over the road to catch the No.5 bus into the centre of Maastricht. Got off at the train station on the east side of the river before walking over the bridge to the west side.
Tumblr media
Strolled around, including a walk through the square in which Andre Rieu stages his hometown concerts, and had a couple of drinks before stopping at a bar for some bitterballen - a Dutch speciality. They were deep fried in breadcrumbs with a soft centre of minced beef and a sort of roulade. Served with grain mustard - very nice!

Caught a bus to the edge of the city to visit the caves at St Pieter. An amazing underground warren of passages dug out by farmers who owned the land above and turned their hand to mining limestone.
Tumblr media
They have left a complex of more than 200km of tunnels.
Along the way were some incredible charcoal drawings on the rock faces, dating back 150 years.

From the caves headed back into Maastricht and after a couple of false starts finding places to eat, headed back instead for a late high tea at the van.

Orpheus and Eurydice in the Underworld
