Mont Saint Michel
September 30, 2023.
We awoke early and said good-bye to "nos cheri" Francoise. What a delight to meet her and I had a lump in the throat as we said good-bye even though it is for just 4 months.
Our final destination for the day in Paris - but we could not be this close to Mont St. Michel and not see it.
Annie & Carl had been there - but they insisted we go since Mark and I had not.
Let me just say WOWZA!!! You can see this from miles away - FYI.
If you want better pictures and a professional explanation here is a 5 minute snippet from Rick Steve's show on Normandy. Go to minute 21 if you just want to learn about Mont Saint Michel. It is great and will give you a good look at all the steps Annie and I climbed to get to that Abbey.
However, this film was done in 2004 so there have been some changes - not in the abbey - but in the approach to the Abbey. Gone is the causeway.
Beginning in 2009 the causeway and parking areas were removed. It was replaced by a bridge open to the residents on the town (less that 50 at latest count), delivery trucks and shuttles to bring the millions of visitors to the Abbey. Since April 2014, the new car park on the mainland has been located 1.5 miles from the island. Visitors can walk or use shuttles to cross the causeway. The light bridge allows the waters to flow freely around the island and improves the efficiency of the now operational dam. The island is once again an island.
I have a little more info about how this abbey became an abbey too. According to a legend, the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. But the bishop thought his dream was just that - a dream. Weeks passed and Michael came again. Still, the bishop thought - surely this didn't happen. The third time came and Michael was a little ticked off. He once again commanded him to build an Abbey and church to honor St. Michael and this time he put his finger on Aubert's head - a little too hard and caused a hole in his skull. When he awoke with the hole in his head - he thought - uh-oh, I better get busy! The first part of the abbey was dedicated on 16 October 709. The picture below is from that first building.
And to prove that that story is 100% true, Aubert's skull, complete with hole where the archangel's finger pierced it, can still be seen at the Saint-Gervais Basilica in Avranches, Normandy.
Now, today is place is still a pilgrimage site - but most of the people who visit have no religious interest in St. Aubert or St. Michel. They are just tourists and stores abound everywhere to fleece those tourists. BUT - and this is interesting - once the first part of the abbey was built the monks created flyers and distributed them all around Europe encouraging a pilgrimage to Mont. Saint Michel. Then they built inns and restaurants and stores to buy items made by the monks. - like pieces of word with a cross branded into the wood. The church recognized the this was a steady income source and as the abbey grew so did the town.
The cloisters were beautiful.
Rick Steves says that the tide comes in and goes out at the speed of a galloping horse - but that is not true. It is a legend that has lived more than 1000 year though. The highest tides in continental Europe are found at Mont Saint-Michel, reaching a difference of up to 15 metres (45 ft!) between low and high tide. During high tides, the sea withdraws 15 kilometres from the coast and rises very quickly. The tide is AMAZING but it travels about the average speed of a fit person jogging.
The Abbey was used as a prison during the Napoleon times and one of the most interesting things was that there was a lift or a crane there to bring up supplies. Under the reign of Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1773-1850), there was a population of approximately 700 prisoners. A fire destroyed in 1834 the roof of the abbey. By 1852, due to problems with the tides, the supply of the prison became very difficult. The poor state of the prison was such that it became inoperable, which forced Napoleon III to close it in 1863. The prisoners were transferred to other prisons and the abbey was rented to the bishop of Coutances.
Convicts were used for the operation of the Treadwheel crane, walking inside the wheel. Possibly there were two for each wheel and the estimated load capacity was three tons. The diameter of the crane wheels is 4.3 meters. There are indications that there was another Treadwheel crane of somewhat smaller size on the north side, to supply the winery. More than lifting loads were used as drag. So you can say that more than a treadwheel crane was a treadmill crane
I have no idea how many steps we climbed but I think my watch said 21 flights. I believe THAT! We asked an employee where the restrooms were and she said - "just up 90 steps." You can imagine my surprise when the bathrooms were in the middle of a flight of stairs.
At the top of the steps we finally reached the cathedral
The place is simply breath-taking. We stayed about 4 hours total. Annie and I took a t2- hour tour and the guys found a place to sit and chat while they waited on us to meet them for lunch.
They found a very small garden with a table and a couple of chairs and they were very happy.
When we arrived it looked like this:
When we left it looked like this:
And there were people everywhere on the mudflats.
It is quite a place and we're glad we got the chance to see it. We didn't see it at night - but now it is much easier to imagine.
We continued on toward Paris and we arrived at our hotel around 8:00. Thank you so much Annie & Carl. Great friends and so easy to be with. Lucky us.
As you know - we took our flight home on October 1 without incident. My brother picked us up and our Mom celebrated her 97th birthday.
Happy Birthday Mom!
We have had a amazing month of travel. We are happy to be home, but feel energized by all we have seen and done. Travel is the best education!!! So, signing off.
Mark and Gayl

New top story from Time: America’s Travel Guru Rick Steves’ Talks About Staying in One Place, What America Is Getting Wrong, and Dreaming of Escargots
This summer, I traveled. There were sun-soaked Italian hill towns; a sleepy Portuguese fishing village; a musty, centuries-old timber church in Romania. I saw it all from my couch, or sometimes the faded hammock on the porch. And I did it under the gentle narration of Rick Steves, the un-assuming travel magnate whose childlike wonder and irreverent curiosity, seen in decades of cheap and cheerful guidebooks and travel TV shows, have introduced multiple generations of tourists to the charms of small museums and the pleasures of a walking tour.
Now, with the coronavirus pandemic making international travel obsolete, Steves–just like the rest of us–has been staying home. “You can’t go to Europe? Poor boy,” he reminds himself with a burst of laughter. “From my point of view, my life has been on an amazing trajectory until three months ago–too good to be true.” It’s the first time in 30 years that Steves is spending the summer in his hometown of Edmonds, Wash. Steves is on the road for more than four months in a given year, mostly in Europe. As the leader of one of the most successful U.S. travel franchises–it was on track to host 35,000 tourists for its 2020 guided tours–it has been hit hard by the global pandemic.
In the meantime, Steves has rediscovered what it means to hear birds in the morning. He’s brushed off his old trumpet and plays a nightly rendition of taps for the neighborhood as the sun sets over the Pacific. He’s learning to love his partner’s dogs, to chop vegetables, and to travel–as he puts it–from home. “That mindset when I’m traveling, to sit on a bench and watch the moon rise over the Alps?” he explains. “We have moonrises here also.”
Travel is sensory, but it is also, as Steves has preached for decades, inherently political. It’s this connection to the broader world–the needs of his local community, the political crisis facing America and the grander global challenges ahead–that fuels him now. “When people say, ‘God bless America,’ I say, As opposed to what? God not bless Canada? It makes no sense to me. This is not a high school football game. We don’t just root for our team,” he says. “The challenges confronting us from here on out are global and need to be addressed in a global mindset. You can’t build a wall and say, ‘Desperation here, happy rich people there.'”
Rick Steves’ Europe is an empire, with 100 U.S.-based employees and 150 freelance tour guides around the world. He hosts tours, publishes guidebooks, speaks at events and broadcasts TV specials. Rick Steves the person, however, is a dad. He’s a little silly. His hair is a little long. His kitchen, where he works, is decorated with a generic travel poster advertising the joys of Tuscany.
But behind this affable persona lies a steely, decades-long ambition. Born in Edmonds to a family of piano importers, Steves disappeared to Europe as a teenage backpacker–and pretty much never looked back, hosting scrappy tours for young people, giving travel seminars in Washington State and self-publishing his first guidebook, Europe Through the Back Door, in 1979. Today Rick Steves’ Europe books make up 25 of the 30 top-selling guidebooks in the U.S., and his dozens of annual tours make millions of dollars.
Not that this status helps him now. The pandemic has slashed the travel and tourism industry; estimates project a 35% global downturn in 2020. Steves predicts revenues of “practically zero” for his year ahead and is cautious about making any plans to return until business can go back to usual. He is committed to retaining his full-time staff, reducing their hours and pay while continuing their health care. It’s tough in a business based on volume. “For things to work in my world, you gotta pack the house, you gotta pack the plane, you gotta pack the hotel, you gotta pack the restaurant, you gotta pack the tour bus. Social distancing is just not a part of that equation,” he says. “When I go to France, I want to be kissed on both cheeks, three times.”
On my family’s first trip to Europe, a Steves book was our bible to choosing tiny trattorias, and his videos were our primers to navigating the twisting steps of the Cinque Terre. Nearly 25 years later, listless in quarantine, my family turned to Steves once again, playing episodes of his namesake show to while away the quiet evenings. “Remember that bruschetta?” we asked one another, watching Steves luxuriate in the flavor of tomatoes and garlic on fresh bread. “We were there too!” Watching Steves now is like peeking into a time capsule of a reality we didn’t realize was ending. Steves seems to live in a Europe untouched by the hordes of contemporary tourism, his optimism unmarred by the darkness of today’s politics or the superficiality of our consumerism.
Yet Steves is intimately aware of historical and present realities. One travel special explores fascism in Europe–something that, he thinks, has lessons even more applicable now. “I don’t think America does a very good job of learning from history,” he says. “When I was younger, I wanted to hurl people out of their comfort zones. All I had was a baggie of Valium to help people calm down,” he says with a bright laugh, referring to his early days as a tour guide leading small groups to funky hostels. “Now you support somebody, you hold their hand.” All of this, he insists, is connected to building a better world. “If I was to measure profit, it is on how transformational the travel is that I offer. That’s profit. If I look at a Trump rally, I would love to have a busful of those people on a bus in Europe. Because that would make my work more productive.”
Productivity hasn’t stalled for Steves in isolation. He recently finalized an Egypt special and published a book of nostalgic essays about Europe. He also doubled down on his philanthropy, pledging millions of dollars to offset climate change, address global hunger and support his hometown. He is a longtime campaigner for the decriminalization of marijuana in the U.S., a cause he sees as deeply tied to the structural inequalities that have reared up so visibly in recent months. “It’s not because I’m a pothead but because I think the laws are racist, non-productive, anti–civil liberties, anti–states’ rights,” he lists off. He is donating and helping raise money to improve voter access in the South.
He’s also sitting still, watching the humming-birds that flock to his bird feeder. “The main thing for us to do right now–and what America is flunking at–is being patient. Being diligent, embracing science, respecting the needs of the greater community,” he says. This summer he would have been meeting the family of his daughter’s fiancé on a three-week trip. It would have been his first real European vacation in 30 years, guided by his son.
But if even Steves can stay home and refocus his attention, well, maybe that’s a lesson for us all. “I always say, ‘If it’s not to your liking, change your liking.’ Be in that group that loves it while we stay home,” he urges. The TV shows, the books, and the blog posts and flashbacks: these things will carry us through. “When you travel, all you’re doing is racking up these huge banks of memories and experiences. I was walking home the other day and saw a little snail on someone’s fence,” he recalls, smiling, “and all I could think of was escargots.”

Ultimate List of Travel Resources for Budget Travel
New Post has been published on https://travelqia.com/trending/ultimate-list-of-travel-resources-for-budget-travel/
Ultimate List of Travel Resources for Budget Travel
There are thousands of online travel resources to help you travel smarter and cheaper… actually, there are too many. It’s easy to spend hours wading through them all. So don’t!
That’s why we’ve gathered the crème de la crème. The best of the best. The… ok, you get my point.
Thanks to my prized Amazon Prime, I always check Amazon when I’m looking for new travel gear. But be sure to shop around because sometimes you’ll find a better selection from other online shops.
REI is the gold standard when it comes to outdoor gear so it’s the place to buy backpacks, shoes, socks, etc. There is also have REI Outlet — which often has good deals on previous season gear.
It’s hard to beat Zappos when you’re looking for shoes — they seem to have everything. Plus, their shipping is crazy fast and returns are easy. Additionally, they also have a good selection of backpacks and some clothing.
Best For: Shoes, backpacks, and socks.
Sierra Trading Post doesn’t have the selection of REI but they do have a lot of good deals on travel gear. Additionally, Backcountry sometimes has decent promotions.
Best For: Basic outdoor gear.
The Ultra World Famous Savvy Backpacker Packing Lists
What should you pack? What should you leave at home?
We got you covered!
World Nomads is the most popular travel insurance for budget travelers. I used them on my first trip to Europe and they get pretty good reviews from fellow travelers. And it doesn’t cover just health issues — it also covers trip cancellations, theft, car insurance, and a few other things. Signing up is quick and easy.
Airfare and Flights
There are hundreds of airfare websites so it’s easy to get lost down that rabbit hole. Don’t be one of those people that spend dozens of hours trying to save $10 on a $1000 ticket — remember, your time is valuable.
That’s why I’ve gathered the best booking sites below. Using these resources there is a 95% you’ll be able to find the best deal without spending countless hours in front of your computer.
If you want to get mired down in the nitty-gritty details of trying to save every penny on airfare then you should check out FlyerTalk.
Momondo is quietly an excellent airfare search engine that a lot of people don’t know about. Many times I find the best price here — especially for international flights/flights within Europe. They also have a few extra tools to help fine-tune your search.
Sky Scanner is the other site I always check when I’m looking for airfare. I’ve found that Sky Scanner is one of the best when it comes to looking at tickets within Europe.
I’m still a fan of Kayak and I always check them out when I’m looking for tickets. It’s especially good for finding tickets to Europe but it rarely finds the best intra-Europe tickets.
It’s Google so you know it has to be good. Google actually owns the software that all other airfare booking sites use. I like how Google Flights shows the price of flying into a number of airports around Europe — which is nice if your itinerary is flexible.
CheapOair excels at last minute bookings… but its prices are nothing special in most other cases.
Scott’s Cheap Flights is an awesome email list that sends you daily flight deals that are super cheap. There is both a free and premium service — I highly recommend this service.
Airfare Watchdog is great because it monitors airfare deals and then sends you alerts when it finds something. This is a great service if you’re flexible with your travel time.
Not all seats on an airplane are created equal so before you choose your seat you should check out SeatGuru. It gives a rating for every seat on every plane so you can get the best seat possible.
While it may suck, sometimes you just have to sleep in an airport. Sleeping in Airports list just about every airport and tells you the best place to catch some zzz’s.
Ground Travel
Taking the train is arguably the best way to travel through Europe — but don’t forget about driving and long distance coaches!
Rail Europe sells rail passes and train tickets for most of Europe. Rail Passes can be a good deal if you take a lot of trains so you should do a little research on that option. Rail Europe also sells point-to-point train tickets but their prices are sometimes higher than if you were to buy directly from each country’s rail network website. Usually, you’re paying extra for the convenience of not having to deal with buying tickets for a foreign website.
Eurail sells rail passes (the same pass as Rail Europe) but I think they do a little better job of helping you choose which pass is the best option. I don’t think you’ll find much price difference between the two sites but they sometimes have special offers.
Seat 61 (aka The Man in Seat 61) is a no-nonsense website that covers just about every aspect of rail train in Europe. The entire site is run by a single English dude that obviously has a deep passion for rail travel. So, if you have a question about train travel, this is a great place to start.
TheGerman National Rail Service website has train schedules for every train route in Europe (but it only shows prices for routes for German trains). It’s crazy.
Most major US car rental companies also operate in Europe — and Auto Europe searches all those companies for the best deals. I used them when I rented a car in Paris to visit Normandy and the entire experience went smoothly. Europcar is another similar site that you can check out to compare prices.
BlaBlaCar is “Airbnb” of ride-sharing and it’s exploding throughout Europe. The idea is simple — drivers post their travel itinerary and how much they’re charging for a seat. Riders then log in and search for drivers that are taking the same route. And, of course, prices are usually much cheaper than the train and you get a chance to meet a local.
Long Distance Coach Travel
There are a number of long-distance coach services throughout Europe. The largest is Eurolines and they have routes that crisscross the continent. Megabus is a discount carrier that serves much of Western Europe and they often have a limited number of super cheap fares (i.e. under $10).
BusBud is a solid website that searches multiple coach services for the best price/route.
It’s no surprise that I love Airbnb. It’s my first choice when I travel and I’ve rented an apartment over a dozen times (I can’t remember the last time I stayed in a hotel).
Hostel World has been my go-to hostel booking site for 10 years. They are the largest hostel booking site and they make finding the perfect hostel simple. Alternatively, there is also hostel bookers (but they’re owned by HostelWorld so I haven’t found a difference).
Sometimes it’s nice to stay in a hotel and Booking.com has made my shortlist of hotel booking sites.
Priceline is nice because it lets you bid on hotels. It does take a little work and there are deals to be found out there.
No other company has changed the face of travel more than Trip Advisor. So it’s no surprise that you can book a hotel on Trip Advisor. They pull in results from multiple booking engines so it’s a great place to start your search.
Want to meet people and not spend anything on accommodation? Check out Couchsurfing! It actually takes a bit of time, luck, and flexibility to find someone to host you but it’s possible.
Whether you’re looking for a place to set up a tent or want to rent a cabin, camping can be a great way to slash your accommodation budget — or at least escape the city. The two main campsite finders are CampingInfo and Eurocamp.
Each country usually has a specific website for camping so just google camping + country and you’ll find something (i.e. Camping France).
Travel Planning and Inspiration
Rick Steves Travel Videos
Good ol’ Rick Steves has all his videos posted on Hulu (see here). Additionally, he has many full episodes available for free on his Youtube channel. Personally, I like watching videos to get inspiration for places to visit.
WikiVoyage is a crowdsources travel site that is basically the Wikipedia of travel. You’ll find a wealth of free information on each country and just about every city.
Reddit has numerous subreddits dedicated to travel.
r/travel (general travel information)
r/askeurope (ask Europeans questions about anything)
r/askcountry (ask country specific questions)
r/longterntravel (long tern travel community)
Guidebook Websites
The major travel guidebooks also have free information on their websites. Don’t expect super in-depth information (that’s what their guidebooks are for) but they’re still worth taking a look.
Timeout City Guides — Timeout actually has a lot of good information about many major cities in Europe. The information skews to a young and hip audience, so it’s a good place to find trendy bars, clubs, restaurants, hip boutiques, and art shows.
Frommer’s — Solid source of basic travel information.
Lonely Planet — The Lonely Planet website has good general travel information for many cities and countries but their best feature is their Thorn Tree travel forums.
Rick Steves — Pretty good destination information and videos. Rick Steves is geared toward middle age Americans but a lot of the information is solid for all travelers.
Trip Advisor has a wealth of user reviews for restaurant and attraction reviews. I don’t rely on it exclusively because it’s well know to be full of fake reviews but I do think you can get a pretty good idea of a place by reading all the reviews.
Atlas Obscura is a website dedicated to the weird, strange, and off-the-beaten-path sights in cities throughout the world.
Rome2Rio is a journey planner that displays all the methods for getting between two (or more) places. For example, type in Paris to Budapest and it will tell you how to get there via air, train, bus, car, or a combination of multiple methods. It will also display an estimated cost and travel time.
It isn’t perfect so it probably misses some route options but it’s still a great planning tool.
Volunteer + Free Food and Accommodation
Looking for a different travel experience? Consider volunteering. There are a ton of people looking for volunteer help (usually manual labor) but they provide food and lodging. The three main websites to check out are WWOOFing, Help X and Work Away.
XE.com is a great site for easily checking current exchange rates.
