Under the motto „Man, nature, technology - A new world is emerging“ the Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany, sought to kickstart the new millennium with a promising and sustainable outlook into the future: 155 countries exhibited on a total of 160 hectares, often in specifically designed pavilions. Between June 1 and October 31 some 18 million visitors came to see the Expo but once it was over the vast Expo area fell into a sleeping beauty slumber: although much of the infrastructure survived and many of the exhibition pavilions were demolished, demounted, re-used or translocated, landmark buildings like the Dutch pavilion by MVRDV rotted away as if to prove the Expo’s general secretary wrong: prior to the exhibition she stated that „There will be no ruins“, a noble yet unfulfilled wish.
This statement also concludes Piet Niemann’s book „Expo 2000 - 20 Years Later“, a photographic exploration of the former Expo area in Hannover published last year by Kerber Verlag. In 2020 Niemann, an architectural photographer who dedicates his free works to the long-term observation of places and the changes they undergo, set out to take stock of the current state of the area and its buildings: with great precision he documents how nature reclaimed certain areas, businesses repurposed the former exhibition architecture and also shows the previously mentioned Dutch pavilion as a derelict steel skeleton, swathed in fog and awaiting an uncertain future. But as architect Jacob van Rijs of MVRDV reveals in his essay the pavilion’s future isn’t uncertain anymore, instead it is slated for transformation into a permanent building, a circumstance that makes the photos all the more timely as they document the beauty of a ruin before its changed forever.
In general Niemann’s photos convey a sense of other-worldliness that leaves the readers wondering if the area has been frozen in time as a past idea of the future. A fantastic new look at an almost forgotten part of German history!

The milling company GoodMills commissioned the Vienna office of ATP ar-chitects engineers to provide integrated design services for Europe’s most modern mill due to its many years of experience of food production. The state-of-the-art plant has an annual milling capacity of 408,000 tons of grain and sets new standards for product safety, hygiene, and energy efficiency that far surpass any statutory requirements.
In order to optimally support the core processes of the complex – the milling of wheat and rye and the delivery and distribution of grain and flour – ATP’s design team designed a simple, closed complex, whose form fully follows its function. The bulkier building elements (preliminary cleaning plant and grain silo) are arranged to permit trimodal goods handling. This means that the grain can be delivered via all modes of transport: train, truck, and ship.
A special challenge to the design and building processes was the slipform construction method, which was combined with conventional reinforced concrete construction. The reasons for adopting this approach to the use of formwork included the rapid progress on site that it permits. The method’s positive side effect: “The smooth fair-faced concrete is completely homogeneous and has neither anchor holes nor any traces of formwork. It actually looks like a textile surface and enjoys a quality of concrete finish that is rarely found in industrial buildings,” explains the architect and ATP Lead Project Manager Ingo Koller.

Sparkasse Bremen headquarters building news
The new headquarter for the Sparkasse Bremen integrates discreet and easily into the situation of the crossing UniversitÀtsallee and the motorway approach. As a solitary building it continues the open urban structure of the University environment.
The building form is developed from the basic shape of a rectangle. Cut outs and voids create differentiated spaces for a high range of working possibilities.
Within the volumes private outdoor areas are created, enclosed by the façade they’re protected from street noise. The ground floor, which mainly houses the semi-public functions, is visually separated from the four office floors above.
The transparent base directs the customers into the interior of the building and the green courtyard provides a high quality space to dwell.

Kieler Nachrichten headquarters building

Kieler Nachrichten headquarters building news
12 August 2021
Design: EFFEKT, Architects, Denmark
Location: Kiel, northern Germany
EFFEKT wins 1st prize in a competition to design new headquarters for Kieler Nachrichten.
Regional German newspaper office building design by Danish architects practice
New Headquarters for Kieler Nachrichten
KielHöfe is the transformation of the decommissioned editorial offices and printing press of reputable regional German newspaper Kieler Nachrichten. For more than 100 years, the Kieler Nachrichten publishing house has been present in the heart of the historic downtown Kiel, occupying an entire city block housing all aspects of newspaper production from newsroom editing to printing and distribution.
The digitalization and change in news and media consumption have rendered the existing newspaper production facilities redundant and obsolete. This offers an opportunity to completely rethink the physical presence of Kieler Nachrichten and their relevance to the citizens of Kiel in a much broader context.
KielHöfe shows the evolution of societies and media communication, by thinking about uses/functions that have a share in communication (like eating, creating, making, recreating, and socializing). The development of the industrial site into a vibrant mixed-use living hub will become a vital part of the rejuvenation and a driver in the revitalization of the city center in Kiel.
Fleethörn will still be the center for news but in the future, the citizens of Kiel are invited right into the heart of the newspaper by integrating and interweaving the consisting newspaper functions into the urban fabric and mixing these with new and related cultural programs. KielHöfe explores a new way of disseminating information and sharing knowledge and experiences between a wide variety of users and interest groups.
The physical transformation is based on Kiel’s unique identity uncovering the architectural code and language and transposing this into modern-day – blending naturally with the building culture by adapting and translation detailing, ornamentation, and material usage.
Careful planning and programming of the courtyard space mediate the large elevation difference of the four adjacent streets. This allows for pedestrians to filter through the courtyard, hence being exposed to the large variety of activities taking place in the new KielHöfe.
The ground is largely consisting of public functions with a large food court, meeting facilities, and event spaces in direct connection to streets and courtyard. Offices and co-working space fill most of the space above the ground floor, with a series of publicly accessible roof gardens and a large conservatory and event space on the roof of the printing press.
The project includes 11.000 m2 mixed-use square meters and 7.000 m2 basement area. Existing buildings will be largely transformed and new square meters added in largely timber construction.

Vallendar Kindergarten Building, Germany
Vallendar kindergarten building, Western German day-care center, Architecture images
Vallendar Kindergarten Building
5 July 2021
Design: Herrmanns Architekten
Location: Vallendar, Mayen-Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany
Rooms for children
Extension of the municipal day-care center in Vallendar
Kindergarten Building in Vallendar, Rhineland-Palatinate
The order to Herrmanns Architekten was to expand the municipal kindergarten in Vallendar, Germany by around 500 square meters. In addition, the small area of the property made a 3-storey structure necessary. The building was planned in a sustainable and ecological, CO2-neutral wood construction.
A lot of emphasis was placed on clarity and generosity in the floor plan. A generous space is the link between all functions: it does not only serve as a distribution room during pick-up and delivery times, but also as a playground.
All the rooms are designed in such a way that childcare works well even when there are not enough staff. The extension and the existing building can be entered independently of one another through their own entrances. Internally, they are connected to one another by a shipping container.
Since children nowadays spend the whole day in the daycare center and not just by the hour, a free space to move around is essential. There is a spacious foyer on the ground floor.
All group and common rooms were given generous glazing to the outside and also windows facing the hallway in order to enable interaction across the room boundaries. The daylight-flooded rooms offer the children and the staff a pleasant learning, play and working atmosphere.
Due to the requirements for economy and sustainability, we decided to use wood as the building structure. And in the spirit of Mies van der Rohe, we veneered the wooden structure with a brick facade; because “architecture begins where you put two bricks together”. The relief structure of the facade gives the building a concise and lively appearance.

The late Zaha Hadid’s business partner claims he was forced to agree to drop the architecture practice’s name – and alleges animosity clouded fellow executors’ judgment, reports Building Design.
Legal papers lodged by Patrik Schumacher in an attempt to oust fellow executors of the late architect’s estate have been released by the High Court.
They reveal an extraordinary tussle for control of Zaha Hadid Architects – with Schumacher forced to agree to drop the founder’s name from the world-famous practice.
He also claims he was forced to agree payments totalling £7.75m by the design practice (referred to as Zaha Hadid Ltd or ZHL) to a holding company controlled by the other three executors and their appointees, in a move Schumacher claims would reduce “ZHL’s ability to continue as a going concern”.

This Baku building is a personal favourite of mine, an absolute peak building for this architect, the sensous and liquid-like shape is enticing. The flowing form just lifts out of the plaza, landscape and building are one – Editor Adrian Welch: photo : HĂ©lĂšne Binet
Born in Iraq in 1950, Hadid learned about abstract art and architecture at the Architectural Association in London. There, she found inspiration in unconventional forms. Before computers made her designs easier to put on paper, Hadid’s studio was known to use the photocopier in creative ways to bend lines and create new shapes. The type in today’s Doodle finds inspiration in Hadid’s energetic sketches, which explored both form and function.”

410 Offshore on Borkum Island
7 May 2021
410 Offshore Borkum
Design: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects
Location: Am Nordufer 29, Ostkaje 4, Borkum, Reede, Germany
As part of the 410 Offshore Borkum urban development of Borkum-Reede a series of compact and architecturally sophisticated residential units are being created in the northern part of the harbour for workers in the offshore sector.
The quarter, which includes personnel accommodation, retail space and high quality social areas, enjoys an exclusive location on the old naval harbour at the southern tip of the island and is making a key contribution to the revival of the area. The form, materiality and positioning of the design concept refer to the topographical characteristics of the location.
The buildings, most of which have two storeys and a pitched roof, enhance and structure the development in a way that is typical for the locality. The shaping of the site will increase the level of flood protection.
The generously laid out external areas empathise with the landscape of the surrounding dunes, above which the buildings appear to float.
The brick façades, with their inset block windows and applied loggias, shape the external appearance of the residential blocks while timber slats, which are positioned at rhythmic intervals along the loggias, structure the built volumes.

NEUmarkt Bielefeld Buildings
17 June 2021
NEUmarkt Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia
Design: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects
Location: Bielefeld, Ostwestfalen-Lippe Region, north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia, northwestern Germany
Department stores, once the „cathedrals of retail“, have become problematic urban zones due to the rapidly increasing volume of online retail. As an alternative to the monoliths that were mostly built in the 60s to 80s of the last century, new concepts with small-scale structures are needed that allow the broadest possible mix of flexible uses in addition to traditional retail and give the ideal of urban diversity a contemporary form.
In place of the former Karstadt building, the NEUmarkt Bielefeld project proposes an ensemble of 4 differently formed structures grouped around a covered market place. The open arcades, oriented towards the market place, provide a zoned and well-tempered transition between the areas of public use and the desired intimacy of the individual consumer experience. The courtyard-side green facades are accompanied with generous greenery on the marketplace.
The spatial structure of the pedestal zone allows for a variety of uses that are reflected in the spatial program of the entire neighborhood, which includes retail, space for restaurants, services, offices and apartments. This mix, in combination with the unique location between the shopping street and the historic core, promises to become a place with a strong identity and high quality of stay.
The urban presence of the quarter is characterized by the staggering of the proposed high-rise building and the corresponding structure of the courtyard-side facades, which give the cubatures the specific character of a green urban oasis once covered with vegetation.
