Title: Horse
Artist: Ottomar Anschütz (German, Lissa (Leszno, Poland) 1846–1907 Berlin)
Date: 1884
Credit Line: Purchase, The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation Gift, through Joyce and Robert Menschel, 1992
In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, photographers and scientists became interested in arresting action on film. Their studies revealed movement beyond what the human eye could see. One of the most skilled innovators in the field was Ottomar Anschütz, whose detailed photographs of animal locomotion caught the attention of the German government. Commissioned by the War Ministry, Anschütz recorded horses and their riders at the elite Military Institute in Hannover. This photograph of a soldier reining in his steed, its untamed mane frozen in midair, was previously in the collection of the Catalan muralist Josep Maria Sert. The grid that Sert added to the photograph indicates he may have used it as a reference for his artwork.

In Hannover we visited three speciality coffee places, two who definitely roasted their own coffee, and it was pretty good – enjoyed sitting out in the sun at this place near the university one morning, just people watching, dappled light everywhere around us

🇩🇪 Leibniz House (Leibnizhaus) in Hannover, Germany - a vintage photochrom print from the 1890s. Digitally enhanced.
The original Leibniz House was built in 1499. It was later named after the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz who had lived there until his death in 1716. That house was destroyed during WWII, but a replica was built at another location in 1983.
