There's a detail about the map to the Wishing Star that I didn't catch the first time I watched Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, but which I love.
The map, and thus the landscape of the Dark Woods, changes depending on who is holding it. Each character is shown a different path to the star, with different obstacles. Importantly, each set of obstacles is centered around that character's driving motivation for seeking the star. The paths force the characters to face the their fears, their insecurities, their pasts, before they can reach the star that will grant them one wish.
Puss's map is, of course, centered around death. He's on his last life after treating himself carelessly and failing to value his first 8 lives. After 8 lives of "laughing in the face of death," Puss in now consumed by his fear of it.
Kitty's map is centered around loneliness. It is a map of her fears that she will always be alone, that she will never be able to find others with whom she can let her guard down and be uncomplicatedly happy.
Goldilock's map is centered around nostalgia and longing for the family and the home she feels like she was supposed to have. She is failing to see and value the life and family that she has right in front of her (even when the Dark Woods puts the bears' home - her home, her family's home - literally right in front of her).
In effect, the map forces the one holding it to confront what they need to face about their own lives in order to find happiness for themselves. It gives the characters what they need to solve their own problems.
And the best part about this is Perrito. What does the map decide Perrito needs? To catch a break, to take a nap, and to be handed some quick and easy solutions for once in his poor puppy life.

my favourite thing abt writing puss in any capacity (either shipped with dulcinea or shipped with kitty) is that no matter who he’s with, he’s ridiculously in love with them and it makes him stupid !!!! like this ginger idiot is a SIMP and it’s absolutely hilarious to me

Puss In Boots TLW is great and I adore the movie, but I will always be bothered by the fact we’ll never see or know what Jack Horner’s path would’ve been on the map.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Follows 4 Narrative Formats
At first I thought there were only 3 antagonists in Pib: TLW, however the more I think about it there are actually 4 (3 being antagonists and 1 villain)
Before I get into who they are I'd just like to establish that each one corresponds to the 4 very popular narrative formats
The first is "man vs. man" which is filled by Goldilocks in her role of antagonism against Puss
The second is "man vs. nature", a role filled by Death as he is a personification of a force of nature. The inescapable end for us all, our final reward and rest
The third is one I beseech you to hear me out on: Jack Horner is the "man vs. society" narrative. Why? Because in this type of narrative the main antagonistic force (or in this case villain) can be someone who benefits from exploiting society for their own benefit, and if Jack doesn't fit that I don't know who else could
The last one completely went over my head the first few times, but the last narrative form is "man vs. self". Puss fills this role by his arrogance in wanting to live up to a legend he created for himself that led to pushing others away. What solidifies this is the Cavern of Lost Souls scene, where Puss is literally confronting his past lives.
In all instances, these narratives add to one another in various ways (Goldie and Puss having a common enemy in Jack Horner, Death forcing Puss to reevaluate his life, Puss and his friends finding the value of family from Goldie, and so on)
I mean this with no exaggeration, this movie is a masterpiece that can't be fully articulated with words
Also thank you for taking the time to this
